The Ghost of the pumpkin patch is a survivor. Some of you who picked this card may have picked the first tarot card. Sometimes life is just hard and it feels like everything you do is an uphil climb in a snowstorm. But you know what? Atleast you're still upright and if you check your backpack, you'd probably find a flask of delicious, creaky, piping hot tomato soup with oregano flakes in it. You've got sustenance. Your shoes aren't worn out and you've still got a lot of fight left in you. Count your blessings darling. There are people who would kill to be in your place. Thinking of how much the owlrd is unfair only helps if you're trying to work yourself into a rage. Energy Update: Uranus stations retrograde, 8/17/21

This is going to be a very Uranian week so hold onto your butts, pack your patience, and expect the unexpected.

The setup: Uranus is heavily in play all week. Uranus stations retrograde at 14 degrees Taurus on Thursday as well as making a trine to our Mercury-Mars conjunction in Virgo all week. All of this will re-activate our Saturn in Aquarius - Uranus in Taurus square energy once again. (I know, I'm sick of it too).

As one of the outer planets, it can be hard to quantify how Uranus feels on a personal level. Unless the planet is heavily aspected in an individual's chart, Uranus is normally seen as a generational aspect - it takes ~7 years for Uranus to move through each sign and so it impacts all children born within 7 years in a group fashion. It is the planet of change, rebellion, and independence - where you find Uranus in your own chart will indicate where you feel the most need to rebel and be yourself - both by house placement and by sign.

To understand Uranus's strangeness, I illustrate with this point: Uranus is the only planet to be named from Greek mythology rather than Roman. In this we see the nature of the ice giant - the energy of Uranus, though unusual, cannot be held back in its differentness. The truest expressions and most strong forward momentum of humanity are shown to be led by their call - over and over again. Uranus is the great rule-breaker - the king of "Don't Tell Me What To Do". You see this most often in its natives: both people born with Uranus heavily aspected to their personal planets or Aquarians as the outer planet is one of their co-rulers. The great ruler breaker has been at odds (square or sitting 90° apart) with Saturn for all of 2021 - this is our Irresistible Force Paradox - Uranus is the Unstoppable Force and Saturn is our Immovable Object. Since the square last went exact, they have been pulling away from each other - Uranus has been moving forward and Saturn retrograde has been moving backward. This has done a bit to lighten our load - to create much-needed space between where we've been and what we need to change to get where we are going. This comes to an end on Thursday as Uranus joins Saturn in retrograde - now the two planets are moving backward in motion together. This is going to shift this tension point inward for a month until Saturn stations direct and moves quickly to reignite this square energy last in the year. The five degrees of space between Saturn and Uranus is the most that we are going to get for this very challenging aspect - maybe take a moment and savor the in-between over the course of this week. Herein you find one of the secrets to success in handling Uranian energy: let it be. We humans will never be able to harness the powers of the outer planets. They are part of the outer force of energy that happens to us, all we can do is live in it. Uranus dictates the changes that are beyond our control, all we can do is learn to control how we handle the change. In a way, this Saturn-Uranus square is teaching us what is within the scope of what we can change (Saturn in Aquarius) and what we cannot (Uranus in Taurus). This week is focused on the latter. This energy is going to make a lot of people feel uncomfortable. The more that you hold onto the illusion of control this week, the harder this energy will be on you. The big flex will be to let it go to let it flow. With both Mercury and Mars in the mix, this shit will get personal for a lot of people. If you're feeling really "in it" this week, know that you are right on time. You may need to change something about the way that you are communicating or working to get what you want - stay open-minded to sudden changes in work or your personal life. Yes - "Open Minded" - that is a very good way to describe the upper frequency of Uranian energy. This week is a great week to practice your "Yes and" mentality. Despite our Mercury-Mars conjunction in Virgo, this isn't a great week to make plans or at the very least, to expect to plan your plans and then follow through. Uranus in Taurus is indicative of natural disaster - keep an eye out for the earthquakes, tidal waves, or volcanic eruptions in your own life. If you've been wearing self-imposed blinders, the effects of Uranus this week may feel like they came out of nowhere. Look again. Anything that is coming up now has likely had the writing on the wall for quite some time - at least through the beginning of the year or longer. Notice the breakups and the breakdowns. What happens in your life is happening for you, not to you. It will be okay. My natal Uranus is closely opposed to my Sun and Mercury so I have to live the Uranian experience and "It will be okay" is one of my favorite mantras to remind myself. You may never come to be a person who enjoys change but resisting it only ever hurts you. I have an old oracle deck that I bought probably in '96 or '97. In a card called "River," the author wrote, "When you step

into the river of life, you have three choices: you can sink, you can swim, or you can float along." As a life-longer swimmer, this has always stuck with me - both the general sentiment but also that you need to know how to do each of these three things. None is the right decision or the wrong decision in any given situation - not for sure. Not always. But it does take a very discerning eye to know the difference. When you try to swim upstream, you quickly tire. If you simply let the current take you, you make no efforts to control the outcome. If you sink without purpose, you'll drown. How do you know which is the right action? The answer here also lies in Uranus for as well as being the great breaker, he is the great Awakener. Your intuition may be especially heightened this week, if so, acknowledge it. Stay very aware and with it. Checking out during this process will be very detrimental - this is a week to stay in your own life. Uranus is the crack in the cosmic egg, the skin that grows so tight that it breaks to begin the shedding process. This is a week to really dig into the differences between fear and intuition. Fear happens anytime we encounter something that is not part of our normal programming - it's our body's defense mechanism to keep us in stasis. It is, incidentally, controlled by the planet Saturn which is always concerned with what has always been. Uranus has the opposite ideal - our ice giant says that the status is NOT quo. Uranus is always leading off into the wilderness and the unknown. Uranus drives us all to stand up on our own two feet so that we can see. I am called to return to the Icelandic joke that I made some time back: When you are lost in the forest in Iceland, Just Stand Up. Here the Irresistible Paradox is formed: we are so fearful of the unknown that we are afraid to even LOOK at it. We lie down and then, we get lost. But the answer lies in the connection point between Mercury and Uranus - you need to open your eyes. Sure, there will be uncertainty in anything right now but you can alleviate some of your uncertainty through careful observation. Lastly, this is a week to be prepared. As I said before, Uranus in Taurus is contraindicated for natural disasters (I find it interesting that we are in the middle of this transit as we really get our first serious looks into what climate change is doing to our planet). We are also, here on the east coast, facing the threat of a tropical storm. It's a good week to check your emergency preparedness - to make sure you're still stocked in TP and canned goods or whatever you might need to get yourself through a rough patch (apply this metaphorically as needed.)

Ryou inhaled, taking a deep breath of: the fresh, sweet smell of grass, the coolness of river water, something dry and grey in the wind, slightly rotten - smoke? And sulfur. The grasses were filled with the restless susurrus of the wind, each blade quivering with anticipation. Above him, a hawk tilted in lazy, wide circles, tracking the hidden paths of its prey. He stood on a dusty path halfway up the long slope of a steep hillside, the farmlands of the valley behind him peeled back to reveal the burned, blackened devastation beneath. The village from this distance looked like the charcoal remains of a bonfire, the air still shimmering with heat.

The sun itself was hot, making him sweat in the thick, coarse silk of his mage’s robe, every purple thread saturated with light and heat. Mopping sweat from his brow, Ryou opened his options menu, the holographic display falling open, in the guise of an illuminated manuscript, and hovering at waist-height in thin air, perfectly tilted for reading. The parchment was old and yellowed, almost velvet to the touch, the edges frayed with age, and he couldn’t resist the urge to smell it, leaning in cautiously to take an experimental whiff. Strong notes of dust, old ink, age; an undertone of knowledge, of the forbidden kind.

He selected Player Appearance and the page turned, with weight and heft, to reveal another. Kaiba didn’t miss a beat. Ryou had no doubt if he knelt down to drink from the stream that flowed down the slope, folding in clear ribbons past the rocks, the water would run cold over his fingers until they pruned. And the magic effects?

He swallowed. It was not just the sun that was making him sweat.

He’d just changed into something more practical - a short-sleeved green tunic, a pair of white breeches, leather boots that had just a bit of bite to the fit, like the player had to wear them in - when a chime pealed out from six feet away, as though someone had rung an invisible bell. The air tore apart, in odd, geometric anguish, like a broken mirror twisting into itself -

and there was Kaiba, standing in the knee-high grass in his customary black turtleneck and tight pants, frowning with his arms crossed.

“Hello,” Ryou said. “It’s so nice to see you again. Your technology is... this is amazing. The attention to detail is incredible. The player screen, with the parchment - it even smells like - ”

“What is this? Medieval?” Kaiba said, glancing around at his clothes, the distant village, taking no notice of his praise; Ryou bit his tongue in self-rebuke. As if buttering him up with compliments was going to help.

“Western Europe. From the mid-11th century to the 12th. The age of knights and chivalry,” he said, deciding that maybe his best strategy was to simply be straightforward.

“I’m familiar with basic history, thank you. How... classic,” Kaiba said, in a tone that screamed disinterest, and Ryou’s heart began to plummet - already starting from behind? No, no, no, he reminded himself, straightening the slouch out of his shoulders. Yuugi had warned him about this. Kaiba was fantastically tough to impress, in general, and the Virtual World was his world, a realm he'd built with sweat and tears, and stolen back with blood. So he hand-picked every writer that wrote for Virtual World games, refusing to squander a single pixel on conventional nonsense and uninspired cliché.

The last step - before he brought the axe down - was a short, playable demo, as proof of concept, written by the applicant and executed by the Virtual World team.

Ryou had come this far in the application process. Trust that, Yuugi said. And trust yourself.

Kaiba was looking at him, eyebrows arched with expectant curiosity.

“Er,” Ryou said. “Let’s get started, then. You’ll need to change.”

He pulled up the menu, revelling in the hovering parchment once more, and changed Kaiba’s appearance, like - like magic, the lines of Kaiba’s silhouette rippling like a sine wave from the bottom up, his modern-day clothing becoming a knee-length tunic of chainmail under a belted dark blue surcoat. Kaiba held still throughout the entire transformation, in smug admiration of the effect, his arms held out in a ballet dancer’s pose as chainmail draped down his shoulders to his wrists.

In his right hand appeared, with a sharp, diamond flash of light, a long arming sword, the edge nicked with age and bloodspill. The hilt was black, with a sapphire gleaming in the pommel. A plain shield dropped onto his left forearm.

He gave the sword an experimental spin, testing the heft with practiced ease, and slid it back into the leather scabbard on his belt.

“A knight, the charred, smoking remains of a village… I’m assuming I’m on a quest to kill a dragon?” he said, pushing back the hood of the chainmail so that it draped off his shoulders, and nodding up the slope to where the grasses tattered into rocky shale.

“Yes, you can assume that,” Ryou said politely.

On cue, a child no more than twelve years old staggered up the dusty path from the village, her small torso heaving with breath, sweat and tears running in clean streaks down her soot-stained face.

“Sir Knight,” she choked out. Flashing a look at Ryou that said cheap blow, but unable to deny his own fraternal instinct, Kaiba dropped to one knee and caught her, his hands swallowing her thin, shuddering shoulders. Playing along, at least.

“Calm down,” he said, steadying her. Ryou imagined his anxiety as a small, hard rock, packing in the twist of every fraying nerve, and leaned all his weight onto one foot, grinding the rock into the dirt with his heel. "What is it?”

“They sent me to warn you, about the dragon,” she panted. “They said only the Chosen One can truly defeat the dragon, and bring peace back to the land. Many have tried. All suffered the same terrible fate - a fate worse than death.”

“I see,” Kaiba said. “And who is the Chosen One?”

The girl glanced at Ryou over Kaiba’s shoulder, her eyes glinting with fear.

“No - no one knows,” she said. “But all the oracles say they’re coming… a knight with a pure and worthy heart. Sir Knight, don’t go. Come back to the village. It’s safe there. What do you gain from this? Our humble lands aren’t worth the danger!”

“I think they are,” Kaiba said, thumbing soot off her face, and frowning as her cheek pixelated, briefly, and resumed a skin-like texture. "Open master commands, user ID 000002510. Initiate master log. Begin recording: skin-to-skin contact glitch reappeared during writer play-test, candidate Bakura, R. Begin patch work immediately. End recording. Disperse to Virtual World team, flag Sawada, project manager. Close master commands. Did you know, one of the most compelling unsolved problems in physics is the lack of a theory that realizes both general relativity and quantum mechanics?”

The girl gave him a wary look, wide-eyed with faint alarm. Ryou sucked in a breath, grinding the anxiety rock down, down, down.

“You - you speak in tongues, Sir Knight," she said. "Are you also an oracle? Has your future-sight failed you? Don’t you see that only death lives on the mountain?”

Kaiba snorted and stood up, turning to Ryou. “A solid response to non-standard player input. Doesn’t ignore modern concepts, but re-contextualizes them in the setting of this world via a framework of prophecy, and redirects the player to the plot.”

“Um... thank you?” Ryou said. “I wanted this world to feel like it has a future, too, not just a history. I wanted to place it on a timeline, like it - ”

Kaiba’s attention swung back to the girl, still standing there with her eyes darting between them, full of bafflement.

“Return to the village, girl. Tell them my future-sight never fails me.”

The girl retreated backwards, warily, twisted on her heel, and fled down the path.

"If I go down to the village, what'll I find?" Kaiba said.

"More information about the Chosen One, and an outlaw who tries to recruit you to her band of thieves, with the option to join them for a stealth-based quest.”

"Hm. You have the imagination and the decency to offer me something other than blatant bait, which I don't always bite. The cliché of the Chosen One is boring as hell, it’s both over-done and deterministic, but I think... yes. Yes, I'll bite. Let's go see your dragon."

In the wake of this... compliment?, Ryou could only offer him a small, tentative smile, his heart clenching tight around Yuugi's advice.

Kaiba started up the path.

“Er, Kaiba - you might want to check your inventory before you encounter the dragon."

Kaiba’s hand padded around his waist until he found the small satchel that sat on his hip. Another parchment unfurled in the air before him, listing its contents:

Two full healing spells;

Two glamour spells, for changing the guise of a person or object;

Two transformation spells, for changing a person or an object into an animal;

Two scrying spells, for locating people or objects;

Two ignis spells, for commanding fire;

Two aqua spells, for commanding water; and

Two ventus spells, for commanding wind.

Ryou watched him as he read. He'd carved a small, thick groove into the dirt below his foot. Surely, that was enough for Kaiba to get creative?

Kaiba only closed the parchment with a brisk flick of his hand. Then he started up the mountain, Ryou following nervously behind.

The mountain path was rougher than Ryou expected, a tightly-coiled spring of switchbacks, leading to the curved lip of a high pass. After several minutes of trudging the dust in silence, he was panting for breath, his feet aching and blistering in their boots, and deeply regretting adding this little detail to the story. Next time, he was just going to put the dragon on a rolling, grassy plain, and he’d make it like an American autumn corn maze, because it still needed to be a challenge, and when the players got to the center they’d find the dragon’s decaying, rotting corpse and realize they’d been stuck inside the maze for five hundred years and everyone they loved was dead, and if they wanted to go back to their own time they’d have to find out how to resurrect the dragon, but only at a terrible cost, a sacrifice of some kind... Not his best off-the-cuff work, but there were usable concepts in there, somewhere. If there was a next time.

Despite being laden down with the chainmail, each tiny link flashing like fish scales in the airy slanting of the afternoon sun, Kaiba seemed unaffected by the demands of the hike, propelling himself forward with long, energetic strides. How?

Ryou thought about asking for a break. Or drinking water from the stream. Or changing his boots for something comfier, but he didn't have anything else in his outfit inventory except the mage robes, and the slippers might be even worse… he stopped, hands on his hips, gathering his breath.

From here the valley sprawled below them, a wide, velvety plain, its edges rising and scalloped by mountains. The village fit in the circle of his thumb and forefinger, a smoking black thumbprint. The team had done a fantastic job: the stream ran down the mountain, flattened into a river, and ran south, lazy and serpentine, a green-blue ribbon cutting through the yellow plains, just like he’d outlined in his initial description of the world….

Wait.

This was all virtual.

There was no such thing as air, here, or rivers or sunshine or grasses.

His real, physical body was half-asleep in a Virtual World testing pod on the 17th floor of the Kaiba Corp Tower, and his body here was just a series of algorithms, and if he didn’t want to sweat, he didn’t have to fucking sweat! Thank God!

Up ahead, Kaiba noted the absence of his footfalls and turned around, one hand resting easily on his sword hilt. From his position on the path, he looked down at Ryou from several feet up, which doubled the intimidation of his already formidable bearing.

“I’m fine,” Ryou said. “Just... admiring the view.”

“Are you having your Matrix moment? That’s what my programmers call it,” Kaiba said.

Ryou laughed. “I think so. I was tired but I don't feel it at all, anymore. Like all the fatigue's just melted away and I could run a marathon.”

“Is that something you enjoy?”

“Oh, no. I hate sports.”

Kaiba snorted.

“So, tell me. Why do you want this job?” he said. “At my company? Writing stories with my technology?”

“Er - ” Blindsided by the swerve in topics, Ryou tripped over his thoughts. Surely he must’ve read his application? Maybe he didn’t have the time. Stick to straightforward. “I’m sure you remember my performance in Battle City?”

“Yes, I remember,” Kaiba said, which was honestly more than Ryou expected of him.

“Well, I don’t play much Duel Monsters anymore,” he said, “but I still.. every once in a while, I turn my Duel Disk on and play a few cards, just to see my monsters come out, see them breathe… you know I run a Zombie deck, full of demons and dead things, but SolidVision makes them feel so - so alive. You took these fantasy monsters that exist only in our heads and put them in our world.”

“Virtual World game writers don’t work on SolidVision products,” Kaiba countered.

“Right, I know that. To me, Virtual World and SolidVision are the inverse of each other, or opposites that contain each other, like, like yin and yang - with SolidVision, the unreal enters the real, and becomes real. In the Virtual World, the real - ” Ryou motioned to himself - “enters the unreal, and becomes unreal. We like to put walls between imagination and reality, you know, taxes are real and unicorns aren’t, but with SolidVision and Virtual World, there is no wall. That’s the world I want to write stories for.”

“Hm,” Kaiba said, the corner of his mouth curving up in a smile. “Interesting take.”

And he waited, saying nothing more, until Ryou realized he was waiting for him; and trotted lightly up the path to join him.

By the time they reached the top of the mountain pass, the air had turned a clear, dusky gold. The mountains cast long, black shadows across the valley, like dark teeth, chewing up the farmlands. The mountain pass was saddle-shaped, one side sloping down into the valley they’d just come from, the other flattening into a smaller, higher bowl, cupping a pale blue-green lake between its rocky palms.

Kaiba scrambled onto the nearest large rock, his head swinging as he scanned the lake valley. Ryou wrapped one arm around his waist and bit his thumb. They had found a deep, penetrating quiet, the kind of wilderness quiet that was devoid of texture of any kind; no bugs or burbling streams or bird song. It was not even like holding your breath, waiting, because that implied a coming moment of exhale, a sigh of relief. This was a perfect stillness.

And hidden somewhere inside it was a dragon.

Ryou bit harder, until he remembered the pain was fake and did nothing, and he had to come up with something else to temper his anxiety, which was definitely, definitely real.

Kaiba's gonna flip his shit when he sees your dragon, Yuugi said, from the back of Ryou's mind, Ryou's demo manuscript in hand. In a good way or a bad way? Is it too derivative? What does it matter that he'll flip his shit for my dragon when he flips his shit for ANY dragon? He's a slut for dragons. Oh my god, you can't say that! Yuugi, please, help - nope. You got this. You know what you're doing.

Even the metallic shing of Kaiba’s sword coming out of its sheath seemed small, in an unnatural way, a pointless, petty defiance.

A shadow fell across the lake valley.

Both of them looked up -

and an enormous dragon hurtled out of the sky, landing with thundering force on all four clawed feet, flattening trees and boulders beneath its reptilian bulk. Ryou staggered backwards and fell, in an awkward, clumsy crab pose; Kaiba threw his shield over his face and dug in, undaunted.

"HAVE YOU COME TO KILL ME?" the dragon boomed. “MISERABLE WRETCH?”

Kaiba lowered his shield, just enough for his first full look at the dragon. From his spot, crumpled on the ground, Ryou saw, in the shadow below the shield, another slender smile. The dragon’s hide was a dark, luxurious blue-black, mottled like snakeskin but textured with the heavy crags and knobs of crocodiles. It lowered its head on its long, arching neck, gracefully bearing the weight of two massive, curving horns, and stared down at them with fathomless acid-green eyes.

Even Ryou, who had designed it, sat enthralled: every movement it made - the eager flick of its tail, the claws, curling into the dirt, glinting under a layer of blood and grime, the shuddering of its leathery wings as they folded into its long body - hinted at indomitable power. It was a true creature of legend, a titan from the youngest days of the world, demanding both reverence and terror.

“I have!” Kaiba replied blithely, despite announcing it in a ringing voice.

“ONLY THE CHOSEN ONE CAN DEFEAT ME,” the dragon said. “YOU ARE NOT WORTHY OF SUCH A FEAT. I SEE YOUR HEART, BLACKGUARD KNIGHT. I CAN TASTE THE BLOOD YOU’VE SPILLED WITH YOUR SWORD, BRIGHT AND PUNGENT. I CAN HEAR THE CRIES OF ALL THE LIVES YOU’VE LET EBB INTO THE DIRT AT YOUR FEET!”

“I’m here to avenge the village!” Kaiba shouted.

“YOU COME UP HERE TO DEFEND SOME PATHETIC SCRAPS OF BRICK AND WOOD, THINKING YOU CAN KILL ME, AND CALL THAT HONOR? REDEMPTION? YOU CALL THAT COURAGE? ITS TRUE NAME IS VANITY! EMPTY AND FALSE! IT WILL STRIKE YOU DOWN BEFORE I DO!” the dragon boomed again. “LEAVE. I WAS ONCE NAIVE AND VAIN LIKE YOU. COME BACK WHEN YOU ARE MORE THAN A MERE WORM, OR ELSE SUFFER MY FATE!”

Ryou had clambered to his feet and bolted for the safety of a low ridge, which gave him a perfect view of Kaiba, head held high and proud as he gazed unflinching at the dragon, several hundred times his size. He’d written those words in his notebook on the metro, leaning his head against the cool midnight glass, pausing every other line to ferret out another piece of sour candy from his bag. Then he’d missed his stop. That trundling, light-washed world of a train car seemed impossibly distant now - a rapidly fading dream, to be remembered only in flashes and silence. To hear the words come out of the smoking jaws of this dragon, each syllable flowing in a delicious, indulgent baritone from its shining teeth, filled him with a breathless exhilaration, his heart hammering in his throat - this was real!

“Only one of us is suffering fate today!” Kaiba shouted back, a laugh in his voice, and then threw a glance at Ryou. “‘Suffer my fate?’ Is that a typo?”

“VERY WELL. COME KILL ME! THERE IS PEACE IN DEATH, AND ONLY ONE OF US CAN CLAIM IT!”

“I - watch out!” Ryou yelled, as the dragon lunged forward, its jaws snapping shut on the empty air where Kaiba had been standing half a second before. Kaiba threw himself out of the way, a nimble tuck and roll, and scrabbled across the shale towards higher ground. Behind him, the dragon swung its massive head, nostrils red and flaring, mouth curled up in a savage draconic grin, glinting with the promise of violence.

No sooner had Kaiba flung himself behind a scattering of boulders, shield raised, than it unleashed a jet of fire so hot and scorching the boulders glowed red, their rough faces melting in sheets. Ryou felt the heat wash across his face, from several dozen yards away.

The fire died out. The dragon snorted in satisfaction, horse-like, a loud, wet huff of smoke. The boulders sizzled as they cooled into their new, bizarrely dripping forms.

Kaiba emerged from behind a boulder, sweating and singed, his face streaked with ash and his eyes shining. He tossed the warped, melted wreckage of his shield aside, where it bounced and clattered against the rocks.

“SO YOU STILL LIVE? A MISTAKE. WHAT COMES NEXT WILL HURT WORSE!”

“For you!” Kaiba hurled back, and threw his hand into the air, a gesture Ryou had seen countless times on a duel field - a lightning rod, a summoning. “VENTUS!”

The wind picked up, in a giddy, howling whirl, bringing with it a cloud of dust that descended gritty and blinding and pale across the valley. Kaiba and the dragon vanished from sight inside it. Mentally Ryou subtracted one spell from Kaiba’s satchel.

“THIS WON’T HELP Y - ” Cut off by a wet chop and an ear-splitting draconic scream, a raw, awful sound, torn out of an unwilling throat. Just below it, a glorious, cascading laugh. “WRETCH! WORM!”

The dust settled, revealing glistening, dark-green blood splattered across the rocks, and a single severed claw, its flesh still twitching. The dragon seethed, its wounded foot curled in agony. Kaiba was clear across the other side of the pass, by the dragon’s tail, grinning open-mouthed as he panted for breath. His chainmail and surcoat dripped with dragon blood; his hair was thick with it.

“COME GET YOUR PEACE, DRAGON!” he bellowed, and the dragon slung its head around, tail coiling in an ominous whip.

Again Kaiba lifted his hand, shouted “VENTUS - !”

And a second dust cloud barreled into the valley, as the dragon roared back, “THAT WON’T WORK AGAIN!”

It whipped its tail through the dust cloud, a scythe-like sweep - smacking something hard into the rocks with a thick, fleshy crunch of bone that made Ryou’s insides clench tight with terrified sympathy.

The dragon whirled around, clearing the dust with several storm-gathering wingbeats.

This was not real. This was just pixels, neatly arranged and running in rivers of algorithms - just a clever series of ones and zeroes - and yet Ryou gasped, the dragon laughing, at the sight of Kaiba lying in a crumpled, motionless heap in the rocks. He hadn’t considered Kaiba might actually fail to kill the dragon - all thoughts of jobs and game-writing abandoned - unreality aside, the mind had a way of making it real - what the fuck happened if Kaiba died?

“IS THAT ALL YOU HAVE, WORM?” the dragon said, nudging Kaiba’s limp body with its claws, rolling him over. His head lolled, his body twisted into a horrifying, broken-boned slouch. How on earth was Ryou going to explain this to Yuugi? Hell. “I TOLD YOU, YOU'RE NOT W - ”

Ryou almost didn’t see it - a hawk in a dive, arrow-straight, from the top of the sky, diving through a blinding flash of light several stories up - and out of the light came Kaiba, alive and whole, plummeting towards the dragon’s head, gripping his sword with both hands - plunging it straight through the top of the dragon’s skull.

He left the sword hilt-deep in dragon flesh as he pitched forward with the force of impact, rolling over the dragon’s brow, flailing to catch himself - on the massive horn. Clinging, victorious, as the great dragon swayed, its green eyes filming, and finally slumped, in agonized slow motion, to the earth, body first, head last, with a thundering, bone-rattling crash.

It released one last, rattling breath, the trees shuddering in the fetid breeze.

The valley descended into stillness once more.

Ryou sat down on his low escarpment with a limp thump, burying his face in both hands. This was just a Virtual World, where at one point everything would power down and they’d wake up safe and sound in the squishy, air-conditioned comfort of a pod, and he had, after all, planned on Kaiba killing the dragon, but Kaiba’s sheer nerve seemed beyond that. Yuugi was right. The guy was, maybe, a little nuts. Completely off his rocker.

“Ryou,” Kaiba said, above him, and Ryou lifted his head. Kaiba rested the sword jauntily across his shoulder, the rest of him filthy with dragon blood and human blood and dirt. “I have to say, I enjoyed your dragon. A shame it had to die.”

“Your strategy... You used a glamour spell? On a... rock? To make it look like your dead body,” Ryou said. “And then a transformation spell.”

“Correct. Is that all for your demo?” Kaiba said, cocking an eyebrow, both bloody and disdainful, and Ryou swallowed. “I was hoping for more of a cha - ”

His words stopped hard in his throat, a harsh, hacking sound. His free hand flew to his neck, mouth dropping open in pain and confusion, eyes widening. He coughed - or tried to, achieving nothing more than a thin, ugly retching, his face going white - and Ryou watched, in fascinated horror, as his gamble began to play out. There was nothing he could do to help; he’d written it that way.

The sword clattered to the stones, green blood dripping off the shining edge, as Kaiba staggered sideways, gasping for breath, both hands on his neck - what was the algorithm doing to him? Ryou had only written ‘a suffocating, squirming pain, concentrated in the lungs,’ and resolved to think more carefully about what types of pain he might inflict on the player characters, if the gamble paid off... But how interesting to know even the creator of the Virtual World himself suspended his disbelief - his knowledge of the truth - sometimes, and indulged in pain...

He collapsed to his knees, stretching one hand out, fisting it around Ryou’s collar and dragging him closer -

“What - ” he choked out, eyes glaring into Ryou’s, in baffled, furious agony - terrified - they rolled backwards, the blue sliding away to white, as he slumped over himself.

His hand went slack and fell. What life remained slipped away in a low, shaking sigh.

Ryou took him by the shoulders and gently lay him down, passing a hand over his eyes to close them. Dead, but not really.

“Just hold on a moment,” he said. The body had been vacated. The soul - the player - was awakening elsewhere.

He waited a few moments, absorbing the stillness, the detail on the leaves of the pine trees; the way the lake water shimmered in golden flecks with late afternoon light. It was maybe his last few seconds to enjoy the world he’d written, rendered in full splendor by the magic of technology, and he’d banished his anxiety from both his mind and body, to live out its exile in the real world. It didn’t belong here.

The great dragon body began to stir, drowsily, waking up from a deep, deep sleep. The deepest sleep.

Ryou stood up and slid down the escarpment to the dragon, pebbles and dust avalanching around his feet. The stab wound in its skull was knitting back together; the severed claw was crawling back to its slow-bleeding joint. There was an agonized hiss, forced through the dragon’s tightly-clenched teeth, and a vibrating groan, deep in its chest, as it gathered itself out of death.

Its eyes opened, in wary slits - not the bright, acid green, but a stunning, oceanic blue.

“OW. FUCK,” it growled, in Kaiba’s voice, magnified and twice as resonant. “OPEN MASTER COMMANDS, USER ID 000002510. SUSPEND ALL PAIN ALGORITHMS. CLOSE MASTER COMMANDS.”

He rolled upright, flexing his wings with experimental care. He arched his neck, looking down at Ryou.

“YOU TURNED ME INTO A DRAGON.”

“Yes,” Ryou said cautiously.

“NO ONE HAS EVER TURNED ME INTO A DRAGON BEFORE,” Kaiba said. ”SO I WASN’T WORTHY? IS THIS WHAT IT MEANS TO SUFFER THE DRAGON’S FATE? EVERYONE WHO KILLS THE DRAGON BECOMES THE DRAGON, AND ONLY THE CHOSEN ONE BREAKS THE CYCLE. IS THAT HOW IT GOES?”

“That’s how it goes.”

“HOW DO I FIND THE CHOSEN ONE?”

“You choose them,” Ryou said. “You decide what makes them worthy.”

"SO ANYONE CAN BE THE CHOSEN ONE? ANYONE CAN BREAK MY CURSE?"

"That's right."

Kaiba pondered that for a moment, flexing his claws idly in the dirt, the massive slabs of muscle in his shoulders shifting as he tested the strength and fit of his new draconic body. His gaze drifted out over the lower valley, eyes clouding briefly with memories of another story, another game, another man; one who had always seemed real and unreal, all at once, no matter what world he lived in. Ryou had heard it all from Yuugi.

Then Kaiba looked at him and started to laugh, a sound that echoed and rebounded across the small lake valley, the water shivering as each delighted peal of laughter rolled across. Ryou blushed as it buffeted him from all sides.

“IS THAT SO,” Kaiba said, with dry relish. “YOU’RE HIRED.”

X: The Bottom

(Batgirl/Red Hood)

Description: One way or another, it all catches up. Previous.

After I all but fled from Jason’s, I came home to a dark house. Unsurprising- it was around midnight, and that was usual patrol time. I hadn’t bothered to patch up my face, or anything else. I didn’t have the mental capacity at the moment. Just as I was about to limp up the stairs and retreat, by phone buzzed in my pocket, and I pulled it out, looking at the caller ID.

Bruce.

I answered without thinking; my whole body was on autopilot at the moment.

“H-hello?”

“You’re home.”

I didn’t bother confirming or denying. I nodded, even though he obviously didn’t know that.

“Come down to the cave.”

And that was that. The thing was, I was exhausted, covered in my own blood, scared and high-strung. I wanted to see him. I wanted someone to help me- to tell me it was gonna be okay. I wanted my father.

I stumbled down into the dark, hoping the adrenaline comedown wouldn’t send me crashing to the floor. Bruce, Damian, and Alfred were in the cave, looking over monitors and running interference with Nightwing and Oracle. My eyes sluggishly dragged over them. Not one of their faces gave anything away. They just took in my appearance and held mannequin expressions.

“Explain.” Bruce’s voice held all the tension of a migraine. It was the biggest, widest, deepest question I’d ever been asked. I didn’t know how to answer, so I didn’t.

“Y/N.”

“I... I’m...”

“Answer me.”

“You don’t understand.” My voice was rising with the panic that flit like a bird around my head. I knew I was unraveling, but Bruce had no idea what the past few months looked like for me. What it was like to know Penelope D’amici, and to want revenge for her- then to have it, ten fold. To watch the man responsible have his head slowly made unrecognizable, then to fight Jason Todd, who was a furious, wild thing and an icy phantom all at once.

“You don’t-“

“Enough.” It was an order so hard and sharp that I quieted. He composed himself. “Enough. You need to tell me what you’ve been doing tonight. Now.”

I shook my head, taking a couple steps back to put some safe distance in between us.

“No... I can’t handle this.”

“I know that. You’ve proven to me more than a handful of times that you can’t handle this.” I looked at him, but I couldn’t seem to register all of the stern disappointment he wore.

“You’ve completely lost grip in the last few months, and it’s become quite apparent that you’re no longer able to shoulder the responsibility of your place within our cause.”

of your place within our company. I could almost hear the words. I wanted to laugh; bitterly, sadly.

They worked for him and so do you. Only difference is they worked for Bruce and you work for Batman.

I worked for Batman. I was getting fired.

“Consider yourself barred until we can figure whether or not you truly value the safety of Gotham over your own whims and emotions.”

“But, Batgirl-“

“I don’t need Batgirl, Y/N.”

I was expecting it, but the fatalistic tone in his voice still hit me- like a book slamming shut before I got to read the end.

It was the weight of the past few months that sent me reeling thereafter. I didn’t leave time to consider a response before I turned and scaled to steps to the manor, bolting through the silent, dark house and making it back to my bedroom. The door slammed shut. I sat on the edge of the bed, trying to organize the events of the night.

Finally, an involuntary sob escaped me. One hand went over my mouth as the other gripped the sheets for some merciful steadying element. I gasped, shoulders shaking, and tears streaking through the blood on my face.

I sat there for a while, going over the night’s near-misses, Bruce’s words, and the resulting mixture of disappointment and fear.

It would’ve been better if I had just stay where I was that night in Otisburg. Just stayed gargoyle-still and watched over the peaceful streets.

But I didn’t- and now I didn’t know where to begin. At least Jason knew who to hate. I couldn’t hate any of them because it was nobody’s fault but my own. It wasn’t Bruce’s fault I was reckless, and it wasn’t Jason’s fault he was angry. Both of them were bigger and more dauntless than I was, and between them, I was nothing. My mind restlessly searched for somewhere to shift the blame, so that maybe I could feel justified in my ceaseless pity- until I’d exhausted every option and teetered on the edge of lying to myself. I disillusioned myself by turning on the shower head.

The water burned my wounds, but there was an overall comfortable warmth in the writhing steam and dancing water at my feet. Though safely enveloped in my fervid baptism, a new great chasm erupted in the space between myself and my family. A foreign distance jaggedly inserting itself into the marble of the mansion, tectonic plates shifting with the bodies in the foundations.

I had outgrown the skyscrapers. I’d surpassed the tallest spire in Gotham. And now, helplessly, gracelessly, I was falling.

When I blinked my eyes open, it was still dark. My head ached from the pressure of crying, and I could feel how swollen my eyes were. The cool sheets beneath my head were a relief. Checking my phone, I saw that it was almost 5 am. The part of the night that was only a few hours ago seemed now like a mature memory. I had several missed calls from Dick, and one from Babs. A text from Tim just a few minutes old asking if I was awake.

There was a knock on the door, and foggily, I realized that it was the sound that had woken me up the first place. I pulled myself to a sitting position, and faced the door.

“Come in.” My voice was hoarse, so it was a raspy whisper at best. Still, the door cracked open, dim light from the hall flooding into the room. My aching eyes fell on Dick’s face, changed from his uniform into sweatpants and a t-shirt. He had a new bruise on his arm, but otherwise seemed alright.

There were no words from him as he stepped into the dark, settling on the edge of my bed in a slow, tired way. I didn’t look at him. He reached for me, and I realized he had a bandage in his hand. Then, I remembered the laceration on my cheek, and as if on cue, the cold, still air of my room began to irritate it. It stung as he applied a couple of butterfly bandages to hold it together, and then a larger one to cover the expanse of my cheek. I must have looked pathetic. Too pathetic to reprimand, so he settled instead for a weighty silence.

“You’ll need stitches.” He said finally.

A silver gray light was sleeping through the blinds, the last labored breaths of an aging night disappearing with the arrival of dawn. He sighed, letting his hands fall away from my face.

“I haven’t been here.” He said quietly. “I haven’t been here for you, and I wasn’t there for him, and now...”

A siren wailed somewhere in the city.

“...and now... now it’s all happening again, and I’m making the same mistakes, aren’t I?”

“No.” I whispered. “You’re not.”

I couldn’t stop the tears, even though I was sick of crying. I felt his hand on my back, and I leaned into his shirt as I sobbed.

“I was so terrified.” I confessed, muffled by the fabric. “I didn’t mean for any of it to happen. I didn’t want either of you to get hurt.”

“I know. I saw you. He didn’t hurt me, Y/N. I wasn’t going to hurt him, either.”

“I just... we were doing so much good. Cliffs- he killed that girl. He shot her in her own bed, just like my moms-“

“Shh...” He pulled his other arm around me, wrapping me up. It should have felt safe, but I only felt the guilt and grief filling my chest, like fighting a tide in a raging sea. A hopeless, uphill fight against the non-sentience of things you can’t take back. “It’s alright.” Dick said. “I know you had all the right reasons. I know.”

I shook my head. “It doesn’t matter, now.”

“That’s not true. It’s not too late for him, and it’s not too late for you.”

I watched the light from my window grow stronger, a lulling, gradual transition.

“It just needs time.”

And so, I was given time. Its passage became a blur. Christmas break came, to my relief, because I wouldn’t have been able to handle to upkeep of school, even if I usually could hold myself together. I still did things like woke up, had coffee, and walked in the garden. I went to a café to get a seasonal drink I wanted to try, and went shopping at the gaudy mall in Fashion District on a Saturday. My phone was tapped of course, and I was fairly certain my car had been chipped. Just one of the side effects; reflective shards of shattered trust that pricked me, but helped me see clearly. Every night, I went to bed.

Normal things. Terrible, standard, ordinary things. It was all a rythmic reminder that I was now ordinary.

Hopelessness was no stranger to me. I had hopelessness in excess, and it kept me in bed some days, left to rot in my own sorrow and self pity, and Bruce allowed me that. I still went down to the cave and asked about unfolding cases, because the utter absence of control left me holding onto whatever was left with white knuckles.

Tim dipped gracefully around me, like when I entered the room, the wooden floors became broken glass, and if he didn’t flee within two minutes his feet would fall victim.

Dick was the opposite; overbearing in every sense of the word. Texting, calling, even bringing me gifts. It felt insultingly akin to charity.

Damian braved me. It was that stubborn little whim he often had. He probably liked it- everyone not knowing what to do with me. He initiated conversation because he reveled in the idea that everyone else was too scared to.

And as for me, starkly situated between Jason’s hate and Dick’s overbearing management and Bruce’s disappointment, Damian bringing me a bowl of peach slices or indulging me about how a case was going was nice. I never would’ve guessed Damian al Ghul Wayne would be the keeper of my sanity, but even pigs could probably fly under the right circumstances.

Not a word from Jason. Despite our final words to one another, I ached for all that came before. His jagged laugh, and dark, attentive eyes. The way he never put his head down, like he had pride under his chin. The way he watched and listened. I didn’t want to be alone anymore; the kind of alone where you’re surrounded by people but not a single one of them has any idea who or what you are. I wasn’t my mothers’ daughter. I wasn’t Batgirl. I knew that.

But what was I to him? He didn’t like me because I was Batgirl- he hated Batgirl. He liked me because-

because...

I tried to think of a reason. Any reason he would let me push away his helmet of the darkness of that alley. Why he would kiss me on the balcony of Olivier D’amici’s Luskan townhouse. Not needy, not lustful, not vengeful. Just an ordinary kiss. Ordinary.

The Patch’s desperation for money was no secret. Odd sponsorships, sold out stadiums of normal people who can’t even see ghosts, PatchDonald’s. It seemed there was no lengths they wouldn’t go to.

But this. This was a surprise.

Manta held up a keychain of Shamash, the partner of Lady Jeanne of the X-Laws. He shuddered a bit at the memory of her fight against Team Nile. “This seems…. A bit in bad taste, don’t you guys think?” He placed the trinket back on the rack and took a step back to observe the full spread. He recognized several of the other items; Joco’s claws, Ren’s guandao, Horohoro’s snowboard, Harusame, Amidamaru himself… all in miniature. There was even a rainbow of small Oracle Bells, each bearing the name and Furyoku level of the shaman it belonged to. Incredible.

“Oh, I dunno Manta. These seem like they could be fun!” Yoh said, and Manta turned to see him swinging around a toy-sized version of his Spirit of the Sword Oversoul. Typical Yoh, unbothered.

“It’s stupid, but it’s harmless,” Anna chimed in, thumbing through a box of flags bearing the names of the various teams. She pulled one out bearing the name of Team Funbari Hotsprings with a gentle smirk and a gleam in her eye. “Anyway, you can’t complain about this free advertisement.”

No wonder she doesn’t mind, Manta rolled his eyes. He continued to wander around the store until his eyes locked on one particular stand, the biggest one in the shop, taking an entire wall, floor to ceiling. “Y...Yoh-kun…look… at this…” he stammered.

“What is it, Manta?” Yoh turned, and his eyes went wide. “Woah!” He ran to stand beside Manta and picked up…

A stuffed doll. Of Amidamaru. Like the other dolls on the shelf, the features were rendered in ultra-cute, chibi-like proportions. The eyes were buttons.

“Amazing! And they’re so cute! People can buy these?” Yoh was getting excited.It made Manta laugh.

“I guess they are pretty cute, Yoh-kun. But why sell anything that looks like the spirit allies? Not everyone in the audience can even SEE them.”

“It is obvious, Lord Manta,” Amidamaru said, materializing close enough to make Manta jump-- he never would get used to that would he? “They made likenesses of us spirits so everyone can know what we look like as well.”

“Really? Well I guess that makes sense--”

“Check this one out,” Yoh laughed. “Ren, it’s you!”

Ren frowned, and pushed himself off the wall by the door, where he’d been since the group had walked into the store.

“These are absolutely ridiculous,” Ren’s voice was a deadpan as he picked up a plush Bason. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything more trivial. Put them down, Yoh, we should get going.”

But Yoh had disappeared from his place between Manta and Ren. With mirrored looks of surprise, they both whirled around to find Yoh already at the cash register handing Kalim money. He came back with two bags stuffed full of the dolls. “I got one of everybody! Including our spirits!”

“Yoh-kun… why? You aren’t… you aren’t planning on using these as voodoo dolls are you?” Manta poked at the bags. Yoh laughed loudly at that.

“Of course not, Manta, don’t be silly,” Yoh rummaged through the bags and pulled out one of the dolls. He held it up but it’s hands. “I don’t think voodoo is really the right term for what those types of shamans use. But anyway, these are too cute for that.”

“Wait wait wait, Yoh-kun,” Manta said, his voice shaking slightly looking at the doll in Yoh’s hands. “YOU BOUGHT ONE OF HAO?!?”

“Yeah! Why not?” Yoh’s ever-present smile was shining even now. Anna harrumphed from behind him.

“Don’t waste money on things like this again, Yoh,” Anna said, in her usual cool tone. “You can keep them, but you’ll be running 10 extra laps for each one you bought.” She breezed past him and out of the store.

Tears streamed down Yoh’s face. “Right Anna, of course,” he whimpered.

“I hope it was worth it Yoh-kun,” Manta chuckled, trailing behind Yoh as they both followed Anna out.

Ren didn’t bother hiding his disgust for the dolls. He jabbed at one of Horohoro with the tip of his spear These dolls were idiotic, and the people who bought them more so. Whoever thought of it should really be--

“Mama, mama, I want a dollie!” A tiny voice chirped. “Woooow, there’s so many! Mommy, which should I choose?” A tiny girl, smaller than Manta even, was looking up and down the wall of plushies in awe. Ren could almost see her eyes sparkling.

“Just don’t take too long, sweetie, your father is waiting for us,” a woman called distractedly as she perused another nearby display of Shaman Fight merchandise.

The girl ran along the display, looking at all the shamans and their spirit allies. She was so focused on the dolls that she ran right into Ren’s leg. She pulled away from the flowy fabric around his ankles.

“Sorry mister!” She chimed. Before Ren could respond, a look of excitement spread over her face. “I know you! You’re one of the shamans fighting! Your ghost was really, really big!” To emphasize this fact, she spread her arms as wide as they could go. So, the child could see spirits, could she? Perhaps she was related to another participant. Or maybe she was just a brat with a little second sight? Ren grumbled a little, as he looked down at the child, then back at the wall.

With a faint blush spreading across his cheeks, Ren reached out and grabbed one of the dolls of himself. He didn’t look back at the girl, but he thrust the doll into her arms.

“Since you recognize me, you should take this one,” he growled, though there was no heat in his voice. “I, Tao Ren, am going to be the Shaman King, after all. You’ll do well to remember that.”

The girl accepted the doll happily. “Okay! Thank you sir!” She turned to head back to her mother, but stopped. She glanced back at Ren, and chirruped, “Good luck, Len! I hope you do win!” With that, she scampered off, still clutching the doll he gave her. Normally Ren would get annoyed if someone said his name wrong, but he found his features softening despite himself. He almost smiled.

Almost.

Until he heard snickering coming from behind him.

Turning a deep shade of crimson, Ren whirled around to find his teammates, Horohoro and Joco, failing to stifle their laughter. “What are you idiots laughing at?!” He fumed as he stalked passed them.

“Oh, nothing Lenny,” Joco breathed. “Just didn’t know you had a soft side”

“Yea, Ren, who knew you were so good with kids,” Horohoro chimed in.

“Shut up! Both of you! I was just making sure she knows who the victor is going to be!”

“Whatever you say, Ren,” Horohoro said, patting him on the shoulder. “Whatever you say.”

“Hmph,” Ren mumbled, and made to leave. The girl and her mother were on their way out, but before the door closed, she looked back. She waved at him again with a big smile. Before the door closed, he saw she’d gone back for a Bason doll as well.

This time, he did smile.

“POW!”

“Ka-shhh. Slash! Shing!”

“Hiya! Hup! Hah!”

“Pchooo!”

“Will you two shut up?” Horohoro and Joco’s game was interrupted by a slap across the face from Anna. “Stop playing with these dolls. Yoh’s supposed to be carrying everything.” She stuffed the dolls of Horohoro, Kororo, Joco, and Mic back into Yoh’s bags. They probably didn’t add much weight, but considering he was already carrying everything else, on top of an afternoon of training, it likely didn’t help.

“Ah c’mon, Anna, no need to interrupt their fun, right?” Yoh attempted.

“No. They’re your dolls. You carry them back,” Anna’s clipped voice left little room for argument. Yoh hung his head in defeat. “Besides, they were annoying me.”

The two teams of friends rarely trained together. They were all rivals, afterall. But by now, they’d all seen each other in action enough times that there was little harm when they were all out anyway. After a morning of shopping together, they spent the afternoon together training for several hours, as well. With the sun just beginning to set, the group made their way back into town towards the dormitories they stayed in.

“The boss really wasn’t kidding about making you run those extra laps, huh chief?” Ryu drawled, looking half amused, half concerned at Yoh’s plight.

“Is she ever kidding?” Yoh whined back. A chuckle ran through the other boys. “Come on, guys, it’s not funny--woah.” Yoh stopped short as a couple young boys ran in front of him. Like Horohoro and Joco, they were making fake fighting noises as they swiped at each other. One boy took a swipe with dull claws, toy replicas of Joco’s own. The other bapped him on the head with a small piece of wood painted like Horohoro’s snowboard.

“Hey hey, these kids have good taste,” Joco cooed. They all stopped to watch the children at play. “How come you’re sticking around, Anna? This doesn’t annoy you?”

“Of course not. It’s cute when six year olds are playing. Though I suppose neither of you are much older, mentally.”

“Damn, Anna,that’s cold,” Joco whimpered.

“Well, obviously we know which of these kids is best,” Horohoro bragged, gesturing to the kid with his toy snowboard.

“What? No way, the kid with Mic’s claws would win!” Joco snapped back.

“This argument is pointless,” Ren chided, and was the first to break away from the group and keep walking.

“SHOOKY ZAMMY!” Another young boy appeared and ran at the other two. He held a small guandao and he jabbed it repeatedly at the other two, until they both fell over. The smug look on the kid’s face rivaled Ren’s own during a fight. Another ripple of laughter rose at the expense of Team Ren.

With a growl, likely of embarrassment, Ren turned and stormed off. Both defeated, Horohoro and Joco swayed after him.

Perhaps seeing people with these toys was going to be annoying after all.

“Opacho?” Hao’s voice was light, unconcerned, as he looked for the child. “Opacho? Where have you gotten to?”

“Opacho here!” A tiny voice called from a nearby room. Opacho was so rarely far from Hao’s side, he wondered what had gotten her attention. He laughed jovially when he saw where she was.

Her face barely peeked out of a large pile of plush dolls. “Where did these come from, little one?”

“Hao-sama! Cute!” She cried, thrusting a doll of Hao out of the pile, causing the rest to tumble to the floor around them. Hao smiled serenely at Opacho, running his hands over several of the dolls.

“Yes, Opacho,” Hao agreed. He pulled up a doll from the floor, ran his thumb over the orange strip of fabric in the doll’s brown hair. “Very cute, indeed.”

Lunafreya prided herself in the act of deceiving others. A coping mechanism long learned from childhood, played best in the face of others who were not her brother. Ravus could see through anyone - and Luna was no exception. Yet, it would seem her tactics would fail once more, even without her knowledge.

An attempt made on her life, Niflheim sympathizers who no doubt hated the crown worn by the former King. The bullet buried itself in her shoulder, the only source of entry before the assaulter was taken down, most likely aiming for the heart or some other vital that would leave the Oralce to bleed to death. It wasn’t her time to die, so it seemed. Not yet, anyway. Multiple maids attempted to aid her, but with a brush of her hand they gave her space, for it was only a flesh wound and nothing too dangerous that she couldn’t handle on her own.

The bathroom was filled with medical supplies, tweezers sterilized in medicinal alcohol, swabs of cotton drenched in the liquid that burned and left her silently sobbing in pain stained with the blood that ran through her veins. Even as Oracle, her body naturally always healed rather quickly–but as of late it was beginning to take a longer time than usual. Her rites and healings may have had something to do with it. It’s with a shaking hand that she attempts to dig the freshly clean tweezers into her shoulder, the alcohol dripping off and burning the torn flesh that caused her to cry with every attempt, tears staining her eyes but quickly were they wiped away.

Not having realized that someone had invited themselves into her bathroom, and only noticing such when a figure moved in the corner of her eye due to the large mirror that served as a safe guard in case Ravus decided to check up on her. Instead - the hand of the King and stirred quiet some confusion.

❝Please, I’m fine there’s no need to–❞ Lies cut off so abruptly when she felt the tweezers being taken from her hand and her good shoulder being applied delicate pressure to turn her body to face the tactician. Blood still ran freely from the open wound, and she could feel the careful attempts of soaking it up with rags soaked in alcohol. Each brush earned him a shudder of pain but she did her best to remain still.

The tweezers finding the opening of her wound, digging and prying their way to where the bullet had been. Lunafreya did her best to keep from crying out in pain by biting her lower lip, her skin soon becoming numb around the injury due to the alcohol and pain that mixed together and soon the metal retracted one final time to reveal the bullet still in one piece, covered in blood and connective tissue that belonged to her shoulder.

A sigh of relief flooded her lungs as Ignis worked in patching up the wound. Thankfully, there would be no lasting injury but she would have to be more careful next time and to not apply weight on her shoulder. Perhaps she was lucky that Ignis decided to check up on her, because she would have continued fumbling with the tweezers before ever getting close to retrieving the bullet. Suppose he was used to being the nurturing type, considering she knew how reckless Noctis could be.

❝You have my thanks.❞ A warm smile graced her features, starting the clean up of the materials across the counter top. Lunafreya would have to find a way to repay him for the kindness he showed, sometime soon.

A business automation platform is an essential system for businesses as it helps companies streamline processes and store business-critical data in one place. The advent of newer technologies resulted in the introduction of on-cloud business automation solutions.

Initially, majority of the business automation solutions were on-premise. However, on-cloud solutions have gained acceptance over the past few years. If you are wondering whether a switch to an on-cloud solution is advised, here are a few key parameters to consider.

1. Upfront costs

An on-premise solution requires a business to make huge investments upfront. The costs include investments to purchase and manage software, the related hardware, servers, and facilities necessary to run it. Introduction

Information Technology (IT) infrastructure is one of the most expensive and costly components of any medium / large scale IT companies. Investments in putting up their own data center and physical servers and their maintenance is high-priced in terms of Return on Investment (ROI).

Setting up Amazon Web Services (AWS) EC2 Server

An instance is the virtual server hosted by AWS. The instance is a plain server on which the operating system, database, application server can be installed and configured based on the software / web application you are planning to deploy.

Prerequisite steps to setup an AWS EC2 are as follows:

Create a key pair.

Create a security group.

Open your Web browser. Enter https://portal.aws.amazon.com/billing/signup#/start.

AWS singup

In the Email address text box, enter an email address with which you want to sign up an account.

In the Password text box, enter the password you want to set up.

Create AWS account

NOTE: Please follow the password condition as shown in the screen above.

In the Confirm password text box, enter the same password you want to set up.

In the AWS account name text box, specify the account name which you want to set up.

Click Continue. The Contact Information page appears.

AWS Form

Select the account type. If you are registering as a company, select the Professional as Account type.

Enter company name, phone number, address details.

Personal Details

Select city, state and enter postal code.

Select the Check here to indicate that you have read and agree to terms of the AWS Customer Agreement check box.

Click Create Account and Continue. The Payment Information page appears.

Payment Page

Enter the debit card or credit card information on which billing will be applied.

Select the billing address and select the PAN option as Yes if you already have information.

Enter the PAN Number in the text field that appears after selecting Yes.

NOTE: This option is based on the geography you have selected as your contact information.

Click Accept and Verify. The card details page appears.

Enter the OTP (One time password) that you have received on your mobile phone. Click Submit. The Confirm your identity page appears.

Enter your mobile number and complete the security check. Click the Send SMS button.

Enter OTP you have received on your mobile number. Click the Verify Code button.

You will see the below message as Your identity has been verified successfully.

Click Continue. The Select a Support Plan page appears.

AWS Plans

If you are a startup, please keep the option as Free. The Welcome screen appears as below.

Select Role

Click the Sign in to the Console button. The Sign in page appears as below.

AWS Sign-in

Select the user type as Root user. This will be an admin user who will have all the access for installing, configuring and setting up applications. Enter the email address that you want to keep for the root user. Click Next.

Enter password and click Sign in. The AWS Management Console page appears.

AWS Console

You have completed the AWS sign up process successfully.

Create a key pair

This step is necessary to access the server via key pair using admin credentials or developer credentials. The AWS console has an option to create a key pair.

To create a key pair:

Go to AWS Management Console.

Click the EC2 option and the navigation pane on the left appears.

From the Network and Security menu, click Key Pairs. The Create key pair page appears.

In the Name text box, enter the descriptive name for the key. Make sure it does not have trailing spaces.

Select the option for File format.

If the server is to be accessed from Linux OS or MacOS, select .pem format.

If the server is to be accessed from Windows OS, select .ppk format.

Click the Create key pair button. The private key file will be automatically downloaded.

Save this key file in the safe folder.

Create Amazon EFS File System

The next step is to create a file system on the server. Follow the steps below to do the same:

Go to https://console.aws.amazon.com/efs/ to access the Amazon EFS Management Console.

Select the Create file system option. The Create file system dialog box appears.

Enter the name of your file system.

Select the Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) option.

Click the Create button. The file system is created as shown below.

Launch EC2 and Configure the Instance

Click Launch a virtual machine with EC2 option under the Build a solution section. The Step 1: Choose an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) page appears.

Select the appropriate operating system option from the list of configurations available in the list. Select the Amazon Linux option, click the Select button. The Step 2: Choose an Instance Type page appears.

Select the family from the left and click the Configure Instance Details button. The Step 3: Configure Instance Details page appears.

Select the number of instances you want to opt for. If you are interested in the auto-scaling option, click the Launch into Auto Scaling Group link.

Select all other options and configure them as per your requirements.

Select the VPC that you have chosen while creating the file system in the step above.

Select the default subnet from the Subnet drop-down.

Select the file system you have created.

Under Advanced Details, confirm the user data is available.

Click the Next: Add Storage button. The Add Storage page appears.

Add storage details and click the Next: Add Tags button. The Add Tags page appears.

Click Add Tag to add a name to your server, such as application server, logic server, configuration server for your application.

Click the Next: Configure Security Group button. The page appears as below.

Select Assign a security group to Select an existing security group. Click the Review Instance Launch button.

Click the Launch button.

Select the check box for the key pair that you created, and then select the Launch Instances button. The dialog box appears as below.

You will be able to successfully connect to the EC2 instance you have set up using the key pair.
