Tired: Rise!Splinter is a neglectful and awful father who doesn’t care about his kids >:(

Wired: Rise!Splinter’s negligence comes from a place of deep trauma that he’s carried with him his whole life – losing his mother, having been betrayed by the love of is life, being imprisoned and forced to fight for his life, used as an experiment and subsequently being mutated and losing his whole identity as a person – and while it certainly doesn’t excuse his behavior, there is no doubt that this man loves his sons fiercely despite his own shortcomings and perhaps it is exactly that love and care that causes him to keep his children at arms length in hopes to spare them his family’s cursed legacy that grooms them into martyrs and are thus destined to die young, a sacrifice for the greater good that Splinter is never willing to make even if it means forfeiting the world to the Shredder. Splinter’s journey of fatherhood began by being completely unprepared as a fresh young single father of four young children that depend on him to survive and there is no surprise he’s hit almost every bump there possibly is when raising a child but never in his life has Splinter ever blamed or resented his children in any way – he is not perfect and he’s aware and he tries to do better all because he loves his kids this fucking much bc despite all the shit he’s been through, those kids made him realize that he can try again. to dismiss him as an awful father is a gross mischaracterization of a deeply traumatized man of color who evidently tried his fucking hardest not to pass on the hurt onto his own children while grappling with his own demons and the crushing destiny of his family’s blood line that took away his mother.

It’s worth noting that bdubs isn’t very fond of etho/androids until a while after his deviancy, due to a number of… er. Complications; this is the first of many “… Okay, maybe he ain’t so bad,” moments.

what if I told you fifteen is actually suicidal? what if I told you his little speech about having felt everything and having experienced everything is the main source of his trauma? what it I told you he feels lost, aimless, thinks he has no purpose? what if I told you he's fucking bored with life? what it I told you he is almost definitely going to start engaging in impulsive thrill seeking behavior just to feel something? and what if I told you that, just like how rose was there to pull nine back from his anger, ruby is there to pull fifteen back from his apathy just by being so alive?

This might be a Hot Take for Wylan but:

Wylan still being uncomfortable in the Wesper house as it still once was a place for his trauma, and naturally would still have days where he cannot enter a certain room or he wants to be anywhere else but there. Yes it’s his house, yes Jesper is there to help him, but it’s still the location of his abuse and trauma so naturally he won’t just magically heal from all that.

On that note— stop pushing aside of Wylan’s trauma and abuse and issues and angst by just saying, “Jesper will protect him!” That invalidates Wylan’s trauma and severely reduces Jesper in the Wesper relationship. You can’t just suddenly become healed because of one person— and you also can’t expect one person to just protect another from their trauma. That’s unrealistic and unfair and creates an unbalanced relationship. Yes, Jesper can help and be a source of comfort and a major boost for Wylan, but the way people always talk as if Jesper somehow heals the years of abuse Wylan endured.
