Every now and then I have to share this little piece by Jeff Vandermeer praising a writer you probably don’t know: Michael Cisco. But Vandermeer says more eloquently than I can why Cisco is amazing and why everyone should read him. The gist is that Cisco is America’s Kafka, but I think he’s even more original than that. New Mother’s Group

Chapter Two

Jonas woke up from his nap cranky, but after Rip fed then changed him Jonas settled down, just in time for the call from his grandmother.

“Hello, Mother,” Rip smiled as Mary Xavier appeared on the screen before him.

“Michael,” she greeted him with a warm smile, “How are you?”

Rip nodded, “I’m actually not bad.”

“Really?” disbelief filled her voice.

“I met a woman in the supermarket a few days ago who runs a group for new mothers. She invited me to join them,” he paused for a moment before continuing, “I took Jonas along, and it was good. They were very welcoming. Most of them are first time parents too and gave me some ideas of things to do with Jonas. We went to a music group yesterday, and swimming today.”

Mary stared at him in surprise, “That’s wonderful, Michael. I’m so pleased you’re doing some things with Jonas. Speaking of, where is my grandson?”

Rip lifted Jonas out his chair and turned him so his grandmother could see his sweet face, “Say hello, little man.”

Waving his son’s hand Rip watched his mother melt for the little boy.

“Hello, Jonas,” she cooed, “Oh you look so big and so handsome.”

Rip bounced Jonas as his mother talked to his baby boy for a while, finally Rip waved Jonas’ hand to his grandmother before Rip returned him to his chair.

“Tell me more about this group,” Mary said.

Rip talked with his mother for about an hour, before they said goodbye. Lifting Jonas up for a final wave.

“I’ll talk to you next week, Michael,” Mary told him, “Look after that little boy but look after yourself as well.”

“I will,” he promised, “I love you, Mother.”

“I love you too, dear,” she smiled before the screen went blank.

Rip sat holding Jonas in his arms, his little boy guzzling down his milk happily. Although he missed Miranda, Rip knew he would rarely get to feed Jonas if she was here, and Rip loved holding Jonas at this time.

The bottle finished, Rip transferred Jonas to his shoulder and gently rubbed his son’d back until Jonas burped loudly.

“That’s my boy,” Rip murmured, “And you’re going to sleep for daddy tonight, aren’t you?”

Jonas gurgled in his ear as he settled against Rip’s shoulder, eyes closing while Rip continued to gently stroke the little boy’s back.

Once he was sure Jonas was sleeping, Rip rested him in his crib and turned the monitor on. Returning to the living room, Rip checked his phone surprised to find a message from Gideon.

‘Cecile and Joe are having a barbecue tomorrow,’ it read, ‘She wants to know if you would like to come?’

Rip frowned, before jumping in surprise when the phone rang showing Gideon was calling.

“Hi?” he answered confused.

“Hi,” Gideon’s amused voice came, “I thought I would call to see if you’re coming tomorrow since you could pretend not to see the message until it was too late.”

Rip winced, that thought had gone through his mind, “Are you sure that it isn’t an imposition?”

She laughed, “Cecile asked me to contact you and invite you to come.”

“Is it for anything specific?” Rip asked, not wanting to be crashing a birthday party or something.

“I believe it’s because it’s a Saturday in the summer,” Gideon replied with a chuckle, “Apparently Joe just likes having barbecues.”

Rip hesitated, part of him wanted to say yes but he wasn’t really a people person.

“Just come,” Gideon told him before adding, “Jonas will enjoy it, or do you have other plans?”

Giving in, Rip sighed, “Okay, we’ll be there.”

“I’ll text you the details,” Gideon told him, “And see you tomorrow.”

 Jonas was sleeping when Rip walked up to the front door of the address Gideon had given him. He could see there was smoke from the barbecue in the back yard and hear laughter as he reached the door.

Nervously he reached out to knock before hesitating, trying to decide if this was a good idea but the decision was taken from him as the door opened to reveal Cecile who grinned at him.

“Hey, you made it,” she grinned, “Come on in.”

“Thank you for inviting us,” Rip said softly, handing her the bottle of wine he’d brought with him.

Cecile grinned, “You’ve brought alcohol, you are always welcome.”

She motioned him to follow her, through the house filled with many photographs showing several different children at different stages. Reaching the back garden, Rip smiled to see Gideon and Lyla talking, a moment later he spotted Iris with a man he assumed was her husband and he relaxed a little that there were a few people he knew there.

“Rip,” Cecile stopped at the man in charge of the barbecue, “This is my fiancé, Joe. Joe, this is Rip.”

Joe grinned offering his hand, “The new guy. Glad you could make it.”

“Thanks for inviting me,” Rip smiled.

“Grab a drink, find a seat, food will be ready soon,” Joe told him.

Nodding he turned and found Gideon standing behind him, “We saved a seat for you.”

With a smile Rip followed her and accepted the hug hello from Lyla.

“Where’s Grace and Sara?” Rip asked.

“They’re both upstairs sleeping with Jenna, Nora and Bart,” Gideon smiled, holding up the monitor, “You can put Jonas with them if you want.”

Rip shook his head, “He’s fine here.”

Not that he didn’t trust them, Rip just didn’t feel comfortable letting his baby boy out of his sight.

Gideon smiled happy that Rip had decided to join them. The moment they’d met Rip, every member of the group could see he was drifting, lost in his grief, and they all wanted to help him. As the only other single member of the group, Gideon knew how hard it was to care for a baby without a partner. But she had chosen to have Grace alone, Rip never expected to be doing it on his own.

Gideon was grateful to have discovered the group, it had been Ray who suggested she go along after he’d found out about it through Lyla’s husband John who ran security at a Tech Conference Ray had been speaking at. It had been one of the best things for her as not only had she made new friends, but Grace loved the activities that they did with the group.

“Rip,” a surprised voice made them turn to find Barry, Iris’s husband and Cisco, his friend walking towards them.

“Cisco,” Rip looked surprised, “What are you doing here?”

Cisco pointed at Joe, “I was adopted a couple of years ago when I helped the CCPD with their system upgrades.”

“He comes and eats our food,” Barry joked with a smile, “Can’t get rid of him.”

Rip chuckled, and Gideon saw him visibly relax seeing someone else he knew. Cisco handed Rip a bottle of water before he took the seat beside him and just started to talk. As Cisco spoke, Gideon realised that they worked together, or used to before Jonas had been born.

Jonas woke up not long after and began to cry. Rip released the little boy from the papoose holding his son close.

“Is there somewhere I can change him?” he asked, gently bouncing the crying baby in his arms.

“In the nursery,” Barry told him, “The changing table is there. Upstairs first on your left.”

Grabbing his bag, Rip hushed Jonas as he carried the crying baby into the house.

Cisco let out a sigh before noting once Rip was out of hearing range, “It’s really good to see him out and about.”

“You worked together?” Gideon asked.

Cisco nodded.

“How long for?”

“About three years,” Cisco mused, “He’s a brilliant theoretical physicist and an amazing engineer. He makes intuitive leaps like no one I’ve ever met and is usually right. It’s really annoying.”

“Then you knew Jonas’ mother?” Lyla asked.

Cisco sighed sadly, “Miranda was one of the nicest people you would ever meet, even if she worked at Mercury Labs, and Rip worshipped her.”

“Miranda?” Gideon breathed, wondering suddenly.

Cisco pulled out his phone, “Yeah, she was just as smart as Rip, but so much more of a people person.” He flicked through a few photos before passing the phone to them.

Gideon leaned in and let out a gasp as she saw her friend holding Rip’s arm leaning against him with a smile.

“Excuse me,” she whispered, trying to hold back the tears that had filled her eyes.

Making her way inside the house, Gideon headed up to the bathroom stalling when Rip appeared in front of her with Jonas in his arms.

“What’s wrong?” he asked worriedly seeing the tears slipping down her cheeks.

“I didn’t know,” Gideon cried, “I just thought she was busy with her baby, because I was so busy with Grace. I didn’t know.”

Rip frowned confused.

“I really have no idea what you’re talking about,” Rip told her.

Gideon took a breath, “Miranda.”

Rip stepped back unconsciously, “What about her?”

“I just thought she was busy,” Gideon wiped her eyes, “She sent me a message telling me she was in labour. I sent her a good luck message and told her to call me when she was up to it. I should have…”

“Of course,” Rip sighed when she trailed off sadly, “You’re the Gideon she met in the doctor’s office. I can’t believe I never put that together, I thought your name was familiar.” He gave a small shrug, “I guess I’m more sleep deprived than I realised.”

Gideon gave a sad laugh.

Rip sighed, “She really liked you and was so impressed you’d decided to have a baby by yourself.”

“She never mentioned you by name,” Gideon wiped her eyes.

Rip nodded, “Doesn’t surprise me. I was annoying her so much at that point by worrying that I’m guessing it was either, ‘the annoying one’ or ‘my overprotective husband’.”

Gideon laughed softly.

Rip licked his lips, “Her pregnancy was risky. We knew that from the beginning and honestly it wasn’t planned. We had been looking into different options to have a child but the moment we found out she was pregnant, Miranda wanted our baby, and so did I. We thought we did everything right to minimise the risks but…” he trailed off swallowing hard against the lump in his throat as he cuddled Jonas closer. Before Gideon could say anything, he pulled himself together, “I’m glad you were at the group. Miranda would be happy to know we’ve met you and Grace.”

Gideon impulsively gave him a quick hug, smiling at the stunned look on his face.

“Let’s go get something to eat,” she suggested.

Rip escorted Gideon back to the garden, Jonas held in the crook of his arm letting his son see his surroundings. He remembered Miranda talking about the woman she’d met at her six months check-up, and how impressed she was that Gideon was having a baby on her own by choice. Rip knew that if Miranda was still here, Gideon would have been folded into their family whether she liked it or not.

He was extremely grateful that he’d met Gideon at the group, she had somehow broken through the wall he’d erected around himself after he lost Miranda.

Taking his seat once more between Cisco and Gideon, Rip held his son while he listened to the conversation happening around him.

Happy he’d agreed to come.

Do you have credible sources for cult abuse / ritual abuse? Because 99% of the stuff I've seen about it has been made up shit during the Satanic Panic. What cults are responsible for the abuse?

(Hope not coming off as mean or anything; genuinely curious!)

I think one thing to realize here is that "cult" is a loaded word with many connotations and a long history in this context. When people think of a cult they often think of what they see in the movies or on TV: sensationalized representations of people doing sacrifices or intricate religious rituals. A cult can look like many different things, and in my opinion a cult is any group that scores significantly on the BITE model. My understanding is also that the frequent use of the word "cult" in RAMCOA/OEA/CDD spaces is a holdover from decades ago when "cult" was the main descriptor used for any abusive group. Over the past several years, I have noticed people beginning to use the word "group" over the word "cult".

OEA can happen in many contexts under the banner of many different groups, religions, ideologies, etc. Some people are abused by groups of people from the Catholic Church or the Southern Baptist Convention. Some are abused within the bounds of the Mormon Church / LDS or within Jehovah's Witnesses sects. Some people are abused in smaller, more stereotypical "cult-like" groups like the Twelve Tribes. Some people experience extreme and organized abuse that is not linked to any religion or ideology at all. Abusers are opportunistic after all, and this is not about the religion or ideology portion, but moreso about the opportunity for an abuser to exploit a child. It just so happens that organized religion is an environment in which there are many such opportunities. Some abusers also intentionally twist or bastardize religious concepts in order to further their abuse and manipulate victims. In short, there is no single shadowy Illuminati-adjacent cult that is doing all of this.

Can I ask what you've seen so far? Svali, Fritz Springmeier, Cisco Wheeler, Colin A. Ross, and Ozian are all unreliable sources but unfortunately they are what people tend to stumble upon first when looking into this.

As far as I know, Alison Miller, Ellen Lacter, Michael Salter, and Harvey L. Schwartz are credible. There are others but these are the main four that I usually list. Michael Salter is of particular interest seeing as how he is a professor of criminology and works mainly on the judicial aspect of organized sexual abuse instead of on the psychological aspect of it. He is on the Board of Directors at the ISSTD, but he is also an advisor to Australian and Canadian agencies for child protection.

As I've said in responding to another ask on this blog, once I am less busy in the real world I intend to create a masterpost with a list of credible researchers and resources on the topics that I discuss.

My headcanons about the child of the Coldflash

Part 1/? (English version)

- They didn't take a kid from an orphanage or off the street like a stray puppy (because that's too boring aha). What if instead SPEEDFORCE JUST GIFTED THEM A BABY ABOUT EARLY FIVE YEARS OLD AND WAS LIKE, "RAISE HIM, YOU'RE FATHERS NOW, GOOD LUCK!!!"

- Barry and Len received no further instructions, only a boy who had facial features similar to both of them, but had Len's blue eyes and Barry's unruly brown hair

- The boy was named Michael (yes, I love Prison Break)

- Team Flash and the Rogue agreed that the situation was ridiculous, but they liked Michael so much that they quickly forgot about it and started cooing to him

- Michael was the reason Joe was able to finally accept Barry's relationship with Snart. West even shook Len's hand and gave him some parenting advice

- Iris and Lisa argued over who would be the coolest aunt, but they never got the chance to explain to Michael that he should pick one of them. They eventually resigned themselves to a tie because Michael cried

- Mick taught Michael some bad words so he could stand up to bullies on the street. Barry and Len weren't impressed, but Mick was very proud of his "tough guy" attitude

- Cisco made Michael so many toys that Barry had to have a talk with him about it because there was literally no space left in their house to store them in

- Caitlin is always "treating" Michael's teddy bear when he gets "bear fever"

- Michael loves playing chess with Gideon and affectionately calls her "robo-sister"

- Michael didn't have any superpowers, but he was obviously too smart for his age and knew too much to be human (which is not surprising, since he's basically a demigod)

- Barry and Len decide to raise Michael like a normal kid, despite the fact that his parents are a superhero and a criminal mastermind (and also a divine force calling itself Speedforce)

- Leonard reads Michael a bedtime story and Barry sings lullabies

- Michael cried for a long time when they started teasing him at school for saying his dad was the Flash. Barry was ready to reveal his second identity to the world and Leonard literally wanted to go fight with the kids, but both eventually came to a more logical solution.They moved Michael to another school and explained to him why he needed to keep his dads second lives a secret

- Leonard and Michael often fall asleep on the couch together while watching cartoons. Barry thinks it's so cute, he's already taken a million pictures on his phone

- Barry and Michael often dance together to songs from old musicals and it's Len's time to take pictures

- Michael complains to everyone around him that "his dads kiss too much" and is surprised when he gets laughter and smiles instead of sympathy

- One day Michael asks Barry and Len why they aren't married like the other parents. They end up playing the wedding in the kitchen, using dried fruit instead of wedding rings. A week later, Len buys real rings
