#nightwing reccomendations
Note
hi! my fyp on tiktok has recently been just full of nightwing content and im very interested!! ive never watched much, if any, dc content before.. can you help me figure out where i should get started? im mostly interested in nightwing but willing to watch anything. i gather its mostly animated shows/movies on hbo? thanks!!!
hello! same omg i LOVE nightwing, hes my lil guy. and i'm glad u wanna kno more! love talkin to ppl abt dc especially the bats 🥰 so this is gonna be long sorry in advance lmao
general rundown jus cos the media for dc is officially split into three parts mainly
unofficially (and no shade cos i have a dc tiktok), tiktoks not always character accurate representation. lotta ppl call it fanon, its like the fan ideas of how character are that arent actually accurate or factual. (i dont have a problem w fanon rly but its a whole thing)
officially, the dc animated universe ones (dcau) ones are vaguely connected so they have the same characterisation throughout for the most part. usually events happen differently from the comics even if the movie or show is based on a comic like justice league dark for example. the dcau's also different from the dc universe (dcu aka the live actions) but do the same thing.
and comics are the source for everything. for the most part.
all that to say nightwing might not be exactly how ur expecting but im sure you'll still love him regardless he's a loveable guy. even if u dont like him in the comics specifically but still the movies or smthn thats a okay imo, (personally altho i read a lot of comics films & shows r easier to digest)
for comics
wayne family adventures: it vaguely follows canon but its sweet and an easy read webcomic on webtoon. the first and second season have physical copies
but for the canon timeline here's a few good beginner nightwing reading list from twitter i recommend, from:
nightwingirah
brookstweetz
bombadleaker
for shows & film
he doesnt actually have any solos, its either hes with batman the titans or he's there as a feature. so the ones i remember and liked him in:
batman & robin (1997)
batman ninja
batman the animated series
batman (2004) - the tv show
lego batman
titans
teen titans
teen titans go
justice league vs teen titans
teen titans judas contract
young justice
the dark knight rises
thats abt it, i hope you like them! lmk what u think if u go thru them 🖤

Unspoken Truths by A_Concerned_Citizen
Summery:
“They tried getting Superman in here earlier. Went down like a lead balloon.”
It's a painful endeavour, trying to keep his face as neutral as possible when Dick wants to smile, “That was always a doomed attempt.”
Slade has no such issues, a snort of amusement coming easily from him, “Well it's a good thing they finally realized you needed to be the one talking to me.”
--
AKA Slade has information the League needs, Dick goes to interrogate him and ends up revealing the fact that he and Slade are friends.
Fandom: DCU; Nightwing (Comics); Batman - All Media Types
Relationship/-s: Dick Grayson & Slade Wilson
Characters: Dick Grayson; Slade Wilson; Clark Kent; Bruce Wayne; Justice League (mentioned)
Tags: this is intended as platonic but tbh you could probably read it romantically if you really wanted; Humor; Banter; Inside jokes; Nicknames; The Justice League Is Very Confused; Competent Dick Grayson; Dick is that one friend who randomly drops major life lore that you had no idea about; and in this case the lore is that hes friends with the worlds deadliest mercenary; it happens yk?; Friendship; Enemies to Friends; Dick Grayson-centric; Dick Grayson is Nightwing; Slade Wilson-centric; Slade Wilson is Deathstroke; Slade Wilson is a bit of an asshole; but he's not like; completely morally bankrupt; The premise for this fic is that; Dick and Slade are friends and the League doesn't know; But then Slade gets captured; For plot reasons ig; and will only talk to Dick; and then their friendship is revealed
Rating: General and up

Dick and Tim in Tim's Robin era getting punted into MHA? SIGN ME UP. That good brotherly scuffle over a dirty pillow? I'm vibrating in my place. TIM THAT COULD SLEEP ANYWHERE AND DICK WHO'S LOWKEY PANICKING OVER BEING SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR A TEENAGER? I'M SHRIEKING AND JUMPING.
I haven't even finished the first chapter and I'm already feeling goosebumps. A crossover like this, and with good characterizations? Marry me?

Hi, I don't know if you'd even answer this ask but I've been loving all your prompts and been sucked into the dp/dc crossover content.
Im curious about trying to make some oneshots or fics myself but I'm not well versed in dc at all except very basic knowledge so I'm really nervous.
Do you have any advise for how to start or suggestions to help some one jump right in?
Ok I'm gonna be using this slightly as an excuse to give y'all a DC reading guide and also:
Personal Opinion 1: You really don't have to read any comics to learn DC. I'd highly recommend going on Youtube and watching some summarizing History of the Batfamily videos so you know the general lore. Reading a bunch of solely DC-related fics also helps greatly. It can get you immersed in the world and learn tidbits of backstory and characterization without having to touch a single comic. if you feel confident enough that you know the character? Go for it!! If you're still unsure and you want to write it anyways? Have a beta reader who's well versed in DC help point out moments that may be OOC or help fix characterization a bit. You never know how good you are at writing that character until you put your pen to paper! Personal opinion 2: go to your local library, go to the graphic novel section, and see if any comics catch your eye. Pick it up and give it a read. There truly isn’t a perfect place to jump in for comics. Continuity is all Willy Nilly and confusing. There’s no perfect spot to jump in but there are personal recommendations or preferences that people will tell you to start on.
I highly recommend listening to podcasts about characters that you’re intrigued with to see if you want to spend the time researching and reading about said characters.
Other tertiary opinion.
I really only have Batman comic recommendations but a friend of mine gave me a list in order for Batman comics to read so here it is:
Batman Year One.
Batman Venom.
Batman Long Halloween.
Batman Dark Victory.
Robin Year One.
Batgirl Year One.
Nightwing Year One.
Batman Cult
Batman Death In The Family
Knightfall
Batman No Man’s Land
Under the Red Hood
Batman Zero Year
That’s what I got. You don’t have to read every single comic to know everything but at least reading a summary of the comic so you’re caught up and not confused as you go into the next comic is something I’d recommend. Batman Knightfall and No Man’s Land are super long and really a drag to read through. Like genuinely they’re painful as hell to read through. I’d recommend reading a synopsis online or listen to a podcast about it.
Other comics in general I’d recommend that I've read that I think are good depictions of the characters:
Superman: Up In The Sky. by Tom King.
John Constantine Hellblazer: Dangerous Habits. #41-46. by Garth Ennis & Will Simpson.
The Spectre by John Austrander.
Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil. by Jeff Smith.
Blue And Gold. by Dan Jurgens
Victor & Nora: A Gotham Love Story. by Lauren Myracle
Batman Vol 1 & 2 (The Court of Owls & The City of Owls). By Scott Snyder.
Again, there are definitely some better comics out there and a lot of comic runs I didn't add on. That's simply because I haven't read the others. Some of these characters you might not care for, and that's completely fine! You don't have to read them then.
Podcasts I'd reccomend:
Character Corner. Their takes and reviews are wonderful. I adore this podcast and found out about many amazing comic runs from this show.
Geek History Lesson. It has a gimmick and it's fun. It's not as in-depth as Character Corner but it does have a far larger array of Characters to listen to and learn about. There's also is this ao3 post that has a batshit insane amount of info on how to navigate and learn about Batman and Gotham

Hi. This blog looks cool. How do I get into the bat family? I've looked at some stuff online but I didn't really understand and read some of the Wayne family adventures but I don't really know what order I should read the comics into.
Thanks @thisisbjustmehyperfixating! That really depends on what era/continuity you're intrtested in. There are a few distict different ones (although they do all tie together to some degree). I mostly read New Earth/Post-Crisis era stuff. Wayne Family Adventures isn't a good jumping on point for the comics as it seems geared more toward fandom fans than comic fans and doesn't seem to follow any canon continuity/characterization, from what I've seen.
There's a four part story called Batman: Year Three (Batman issues #436-439), which I think is a good jumping on point for New Earth bat family, as it introduces Dick/Robin while also showing some of Bruce's early Bat career.
Batman: The Cult is a really interesting story wherein Batman loses before the big win and Jason (as Robin) picks up the slack. Then, Batman #424 & #425 showcases Bruce & Jason's issues that lead to Batman: A Death in the Family (Batman #426-429).
The Mud Pack story (Detective Comics #604-607) showcases Bruce's headspace after Jason's death well and is a good read before Tim's introduction, I think.
Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying (Batman: #140-142 & The New Titans #60 &61) introduces Tim and really kicks off the bat family as it's generally known today.
Batman Annual #13 (1989) shows how Alfred ended up helping to shape Batman and why he stayed after Bruce started his crusade. It also shows that JASON was in fact the first Robin to wear pants and has some nice moments with Babs & Commissioner Gordon.
Batman #456 & 457 really kicks off Tim's Robin run. His first three mini series introduce a lot of great characters (I personally love Huntress) and concepts, too. They're collected in the trades Robin: Tragedy & Triumph and Robin: A Hero Reborn. The latter also has Batman #456 & 457 in it, so it's a good deal.
I'm personally a big fan of Batman: Dark Victory and Batman: Haunted Knight. I just love the way the Rogues are used in those stories.
Nightwing: Alfred's Return is a good story that focuses on those two named characters without Batman's immediate presence.
Batman: Son of the Demon (1987) showcases the relationship between Bruce and Talia nicely, gives some much needed history on her, and includes the original story of how they had a child together.
Batgirl #1-6 (2000) are packed full of information on Cassndra; they cover her background with David Cain, her language barrier, her fighting prowless and reason for fighting, as well as showing her relationships with Babs and Bruce.
I cannot reccomend the first 20-30 issues of Batman: Gotham Knights (2000) enough for bat family content. Several of the early issues include journal enteries or letters written by members of the family to showcase their feelings/relationships in a way they wouldn't otherwise express them. The story with Hugo Strange is peak Dick & Tim bat brother bonding. The issue with Cassandra really shows how alike she and Bruce are. You have issues that showcase Babs' relatipnship with some of the bats and ones that cover the Dick & Slade weirdness.
Red Hood: The Lost Days and Batman: Death and the Maidens take place before Batman: Under the Red Hood and I feel are really needed to understand Jason and Talia's side of the story, as UtRH is (understandably, since the story was first published in the Batman ongoing) very Batman focused.
I'm going to leave that here for now as it's getting a bit long and mobile is being a pain. Hopefully that gives you an idea of where to start looking for the stuff you see here on my blog. ^_^

Heyy I've been wanting to get into more official Damian content, are there any runs you'd reccomend?? I feel like the more "conventional" sites that I'd usually go to for reccomendatipns will only lead me astray, but I think ppl here generally enjoy what I look for, yk! Thx if u answer ^_^
okay first of all thank u for coming to me with this, i have Opinions, second of all im fairly new to dc and have much to read yet so everyone feel free to add more, and third this is my personal opinion so all other recs are incredibly valid, anyway LETS GO
ofc, if u wanna know who damian is, you gotta read morrisons run on batman, he basically created damian and i respect him immensely as a writer, it starts in batman and son (2006), and here u can learn why damian loves dick grayson so much which is important to me
next! tomasis run which is literally perfect, he wrote robin son of batman (2016) where u get to see damian trying to mend what he did as a child and i genuinely will never be over it, like i genuinely cannot recommend this one enough, then he wrote superman (2016) where damian meets jon, and supersons (2017) which we all know and love where the kids just have fun and save the world and if u want a good series to get into and have fun, this is the one
now comes the more difficult part, damians writting after jon grows up is... weird and inconsistent and writers dont really know who they want him to be so ill do my best to recommend things i liked
the teen titans (2016) series isnt too well liked but the first part i think is solid enough
the end of the second part, plus the batman vs robin storyline and robin (2021) are... i try not to think about them, specially since some people really liked the last one and i just cannot deal with it, the last thing to come out is the lazarus island arc and wow was it not good
unrelated to these, theres a multiple comic event called robin war and... i really liked it, i genuinely really enjoyed it, he gets put in his place so hard by duke that he has to befriend him, plus he has some of the best appearances in nightwing (2016) where dick reminds him hes loved
to close this all up, hes basically one of the main characters in the dc animated universe that started around 2015 so if ur up for some films i had a lot of fun with them!

Ms marvel is pretty easy: you're gonna want to start with 2014 Ms marvel: no normal and follow her up til secret wars. you can ignore secret wars. she has another ongoing that started in 2016? I believe? and that one goes on for a while. all new all different avengers (2016) and after that, champions (2016) and champions (2019) are pretty good for her too. wrt x men: pick a character (probably pick someone who was introduced in the 70s-80s-90s cause that should give you a fair bit of material unless you go SUPER niche), go to cmro.com, and read everything with them. it's not going to make sense and that's okay. but you'll probably get a good sense of what's happening in the comics world around them. keep in mind: alternate universes (like secret wars in 2015, like age of apocalypse in the 90s or age of x in the early 2010s) do not matter and you can ignore them. given that you mentioned interest in Spiderman, you might try following Angelica Jones, firestar in "Spiderman and his amazing friends". she was introduced in the 80s iirc, had an origin story solo, and actually jumps to the new warriors and doesn't appear in x men much -- but she's a solid choice, esp bc she's got plot shit going on in comics rn. you also mentioned liking Nightwing, so you might look at nightcrawler, who is (like dick) also an acrobat. he was introduced in giant sized x men back in 1975. he's in the main x men story for a while, was a founding member of Excalibur, appeared in the movies and TV shows, and he's a well known enough character that you'll be able to follow his appearances through most major x men events. Tumblr won't let me send messages with my sideblog unfortunately but if you want to know more abt getting into comics (mostly x men. I am an x men fan 😔) you can find me at @karmirage . good luck!
I THOUGHT NOBODY WOULD GIVE ME RECCOMENDATIONS TYY SO MUCH!!
I actually really loved Nightcrawler in the movies so that’s a great pick!! He’s such a silly guy tbhh..
I could be wrong about this but I believe in the Ultimate comics Liz Allan was Firestar? So that one might be interrsting too!! ( ofc having a different identity but still the Ultimate Comics have introduced me to a lot of cool concepts that if I like there- I generally enjoy in the main universe so good pick tysmmm!!! )
Excited to read Ms. Marvel especially since I haven’t had much motivation to finish her show but now that I have some good comics of her to read I might! I also loved her dynamic with Miles in those comics so I’m super excited to see her friendship with other superheroes and her differences between the show and the comics!!

Why did Alfred take Robin away from Tim and give it to Damian?
It's unclear. Now it's important to note this is only canon to preboot, in the New52, Tim was never Robin - he started as Red Robin so there was no taking away of... anything.
In Battle for the Cowl, he gives Damian the costume and instructs him to team up with Squire to save Tim (who was running around as Batman). However, another reason could be that Damian had already expressed interest in being Robin and Alfred saw this as a way to help reform him (generally views attributed to Dick from the get go, where I think for Dick he started seeing things this way after Alfred made the decision). In the Return of Ra's Al Ghul, Damian dresses in his own Robin costume and Alfred's the one that reacts compassionately and scolds Tim for being violent towards him - Damian had genuinely come seeking help and Tim jumped to conclusions and attacked him. I don't think it's about taking it from Tim - Tim had donned the Batman costume so it could have just been well, he's not using it anymore and i need to dress you in something. But I think it was more like Alfred saw something in Damian that everyone else missed and wanted to give him an opportunity to show everyone - and it worked, he saved Tim and got him home safely, he "earned his keep" or whatever and proved he could be a reliable ally. I think he gave Robin to Damian as a sign of faith/trust and decided to deal with the fall out later (and then stepped back and let Dick handle the fall out, because Dick's batman after all, and who he accepts as Robin is his business, if he really had a problem he could just take it away from Damian and give it back to Tim - i think this is Alfreds line of thinking, but I'm guessing because I genuinely can't tell if Red Robin writers just forgot that it was Alfred or not)

Currently being emotionally murdered by this:
Basically a whump piece where Tim realizes how fucked up it actually is to have an itty bitty thriteen year old managing a grown adults' emotional hang ups and that he's not the only one who'd been that thirteen year old once, and maybe they're all still that thirteen year olds being lifted up by Bruce in the same sentence he'd crush them and by god Damian would not be that kind of thirteen year old Tim swears and nothing actually changes.

I know he’s more a YouTube guy than a movie actor, but I could see Danny Shepherd playing Nightwing. There’s just something about him...
