Let's Talk About Notion
So, I use Notion for plenty of non-writing things to keep myself organized, but the main thing I use it for is writing. And I love it because it can be simple--just pages nested within pages and including lists or paragraphs--or as complex as you need. The template I use for keeping track of my novels I did pay $20 for, but that was to the random person who put in all the time and effort and not to the company. There are free templates and if you put in the time to figure it out, you can make the complex ones yourself. And I do have a side page to just add pages for random ideas and not clutter my official system.
Anyway.
Tumblr media
This is the front page of my favorite Notion template ever, WIP. I can add as many projects as I'm working on, complete with cover pages (which I use just to be thematic but if I had actual covers I could upload those too) and summaries, but those aren't the practical parts. Based on the word count goal I entered, it tells me how close I am, as well as calculating how many book pages each takes up and how long it would take to read.
Tumblr media
There are also tabs for concept stories that I'm still planning and don't want to count towards my word count goal yet, and archived ones that I'm putting on hold.
Tumblr media
under the projects section, still on the front page, I have word count cards where I can enter my daily word count and it automatically updates the goal based on the end word count goal for all active projects and the date I said I wanted to finish each.
Tumblr media
If I open one of my projects, it gives me all this info in what is technically the header. I entered the summary, genre, dates, and goals, but it calculated the rest.
Tumblr media
That page includes chapters, which I can put in different stages of development, name, and move around; characters to keep track of, which I can attach to relevant chapters, and tasks I don't really use but they work as a checklist. That may be more useful when I'm in the 3rd draft and editing.
Tumblr media
Below all of that there's also a storyboard. I don't use it for TDATS and I don't really want to share the one I do use regularly, but basically they're pages attached to various chapters and you can use them as scenes or events to plot out the story, move things around, and get an idea of what's happening before writing.
Tumblr media
I prefer to write my actual stories in Word, but I could write them here directly in the chapters. There's also a spot to include specific words used or introduced in a chapter. Most of what I use these for is keeping track of word count, because you have to add them to the chapters for them to be added together into the project total. But it calculating how long it takes to read each chapter is certainly fun.
Anyway, you should definitely use Notion--there are other writing templates if you want something free or just different, and you don't have to use templates at all, but as a chaotic neurodivergent author, this has seriously helped my organization and planning.
The website is notion.so and there's desktop and mobile apps and the service itself is free. I guess there is a pro version but I think that's only useful if you're trying to use it as a team for work.

Notion a.k.a My Second Brain 🧠
In a world buzzing with digital tools promising efficiency and organization, Notion stands out as a beacon of simplicity and versatility. As someone immersed in the whirlwind of academia and content creation, I stumbled upon this gem of an app and never looked back.
It all began with a simple desire to streamline my study account on Instagram and YouTube (follow me here!) Juggling multiple deliverables and deadlines, I needed a centralized hub to track my progress and manage my tasks efficiently. Notion came to my rescue, offering a sleek and intuitive platform to organize my thoughts and ideas.
What started as a solution for tracking my random endeavors soon evolved into something much more profound. Notion seamlessly transitioned into my digital sanctuary, where I meticulously curated revision notes for Optometry school. With its customizable pages and effortless syncing across devices, Notion became my trusted companion in the quest for academic excellence.
It's also fun to enhance the pages with photos. Inspired by my love for Studio Ghibli and Harry Potter, I infused my Notion pages with enchanting themes that transported me to whimsical worlds of wonder. Each click felt like stepping into a realm of creativity and imagination, where even the most mundane tasks were imbued with a touch of magic.
From managing my expenses to brainstorming content ideas, Notion proved to be the ultimate multitasking marvel. Its flexible design allowed me to adapt and customize pages to suit my ever-changing needs, empowering me to stay organized and inspired in every aspect of my life.
As I reflect on my journey with Notion, I'm filled with gratitude for the transformative impact it has had on my productivity and creativity. In a fast-paced world where chaos reigns supreme, Notion serves as a steadfast anchor, grounding me in purpose and possibility.
So here's to Notion – the unsung hero of my digital arsenal, the catalyst for my growth and innovation. May its brilliance continue to illuminate my path as I navigate the boundless horizons of possibility, one click at a time.
You can get Notion for free here: http://notion.so

My Filing Technique Is Unstoppable - Organization at the table
Tumblr media
Hullo, Gentle Readers. This week’s Question from a Denizen comes to us from crustygaymer. They ask, “ Hey, I'm new to DMing and I'd like some advice! I'm having trouble finding all the notes I need when we get the different parts of my sessions - how do you organize your notes (tabs in the books, printed sheets of notes, computer with multiple screens, etc...)?”
Great question, crusty. Speaking personally, I’m almost completely electronic these days. I still love to grab a notepad when I’m planning a campaign, but for the day-to-day running, I’ve got most of my notes, calendars, etc online. So here’s a bit of a glimpse into how I work and what I have active when I’m running a game.
Most of my note-taking these days is in an organizational program called Notion, which you can find online at Notion.so. I like this because it’s cross-platform and updates live. So if I take notes on my iPhone while I’m on the road, when I next connect my phone to the internet, any version of my notes I look at, on my iPad, Desktop, or Laptop, will be updated with what I had written.
Before any given session, I sit down and prep a Game Notes sheet for that session. In there, I jot some bullet points for a Recap. I also add in a few bullet points for the various plot points I feel we might hit for the evening.  If, for example, I know they’re likely to head to a specific tavern, I may have some notes like:
Tavernkeeper is Liam Whitetree, ex-soldier, human, male, salt & pepper hair, scar along right cheek makes him look like he’s always grimacing.
Tiefling bard with purple skin plays lute in the corner, golden eyes looking at each newcomer warily
Many rumors about the war in the west. Gnolls have some kind of secret weapon.
Gnome drinking everyone under the table. She has fiery red hair and a gap-toothed grin.
Sometimes these carry over session to session. If they don’t go to the tavern, I don’t toss the notes out; I copy them into the notes for the next session. If they leave that area, I might not include the tavern notes each session, but I won’t delete them. I’ll either reuse them when they finally do visit that tavern, or I’ll rename the tavern and use the notes for another such establishment down the road.
Most of my world-building notes now exist on a website called WorldAnvil. I found that I liked the format of this site much more than others. It’s fairly easy to organize and make it useful for both myself and my players. As the campaign has moved along, I’ve made entries for most NPCs, items, places, and so on that the PCs have heard of or encountered. This makes a robust wiki for the players to use to look up details they may have forgotten. It even allows me to note DM secrets about the various entries and to have secret notes that some players can see and others cannot.
For combat encounters, I’ve been using D&D Beyond’s encounter creator. I also like to use D&D Beyond in general for looking up monsters, spells, magic-items, and rules.
When I’m running a session, I have a number of websites up in their own windows. I have my Notion page up with the notes for the week’s game session. I have a D&D Beyond up for looking up references and to run any needed encounters. I have a WorldAnvil up in case I need to refer to any worldbuilding info. And in general, I find this is all I need to run a solid session.
After any game, I make notes about any new NPCs, places, or important info I may have improvised over the course of the session. I will then generally make sure I make a new WorldAnvil entry for them before the next session. I’ll also make some brief notes about what seems the likely next move for the PCs, and I’ll use these notes when I’m prepping for the next session as well.
I hope this helps, crusty. If you have any follow-up questions, feel free to ask. Until next time, Gentle Readers, may all your adventures lead back home in the end.

A self-care tip for people with brain fog that's saved me just now - document how to do stuff.
I'll sometimes get confused or doubt how I do something I've done a billion times. I'll forget logins, or which folder I've saved important documents I need.
I have a login manager that sorts out logins, pins, and passwords for me.
But I also really need and rely on a free wiki-style notebook (I'm talking about notion.so, but even notes app on a mobile work great if you create a tag or folder first) where I will create a whole page about something I need to manage, write down contact info, historic info I might need to make sense of stuff going forwards, where supporting files, receipts, or documents are (in the computer as links, or in the home as directions).
I have routines associated with it written down, and break down how I do things that I know I will get muddled with (for work, it can be something simple like "directing a new domain to a webspace on my server", "setting up targeted Facebook ads", or step by step tax returns a zombie could follow.
I'll keep records of spending and repair estimates so I don't get blindsided cos I forgot that thing happened this month and threw everything else off, or that the estimate was x but the repair took place in Y and that means it affects next month.
I will make step by step to do templates in something like asana or todoist (both of these allow almost infinite subtasks) so there's no thinking involved for important stuff on bad days. I use a timer while doing them following the templates and record the time, so I know that even on my worst day, It's never taken me longer than XX minutes to do this task. And that helps me manage anxiety about how long various things will take and therefore how much energy I need/ how many spoons it will cost me. That timer is the difference between me doing something today or this weekend.
Anytime I can't follow my own to-do template, I update it so it has everything I need to just click and action the next step. Some of the steps are as simple as "download this file", "copy it and save here". But having them as unique steps I can tick off really helps on bad days, because I can see a little streak of green checks and feel like "this isn't so bad, I'm doing it, look, I'm a quarter through already".

Has anyone found a good alternative to pronouns.page that allows us to similarly put both the flags and terms there?
The problem is we basically want pronouns.page but without the flag/term limitation. We have our notion.so but it's very...large lol.
