Mary reunites with Near after five years, and their conversation quickly plunges into the heart of the Kira case. At last, Near reveals the existence of the "Death Note," a supernatural notebook that can kill by writing names. Mary is shocked but resolute in her commitment to stop Kira, but then Near pulls out two photos.

My breath caught in my throat as I stared at the images in his hand. Matt. Mello. The sight of them brought a rush of memories, both sweet and bitter, crashing over me. My vision blurred for a moment as emotions I thought I had buried long ago surged to the surface, while Near was watching me closely, waiting for an answer. And at that moment, I knew that this, too, was part of the test. A test of my resolve, of my willingness to confront the ghosts of my past.

"Matt aside—why would I know where that idiot has gone?!" My voice grew louder with each word, the emotion I'd been trying to suppress bubbling to the surface. "He's probably lying dead  in the street somewhere!"

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
