You Don't Need an Agent! Publishers That Accept Unsolicited Submissions
I see a few people sayin that you definitely need an agent to get published traditionally. Guess what? That's not remotely true. While an agent can be a very useful tool in finding and negotiating with publishers, going without is not as large of a hurdle as people might make it out to be!
Below is a list of some of the traditional publishers that offer reading periods for agent-less manuscripts. There might be more! Try looking for yourself - I promise it's not that scary!
Albert Whitman & Company: for picture books, middle-grade, and young adult fiction
Hydra (Part of Random House): for mainly LitRPG
Kensington Publishing: for a range of fiction and nonfiction
NCM Publishing: for all genres of fiction (YA included) and nonfiction
Pants of Fire Press: for middle-grade, YA, and adult fiction
Tin House Books: very limited submission period, but a good avenue for fiction, literary fiction, and poetry written by underrepresented communities
Quirk Fiction: offers odd-genre rep for represented and unagented authors. Unsolicited submissions inbox is closed at the moment but this is the page that'll update when it's open, and they produced some pretty big books so I'd keep an eye on this
Persea Books: for lit fiction, creative nonfiction, YA novels, and books focusing on contemporary issues
Baen: considered one of the best known publishers of sci-fi and fantasy. They don't need a history of publication.
Chicago Review Press: only accepting nonfiction at the moment, but maybe someone here writes nonfiction
Acre: for poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Special interest in underrepresented authors. Submission period just passed but for next year!
Coffeehouse Press: for lit fiction, nonfiction, poetry and translation. Reading period closed at time of posting, but keep an eye out
Ig: for queries on literary fiction and political/cultural nonfiction
Schaffner Press: for lit fiction, historical/crime fiction, or short fiction collections (cool)
Feminist Press: for international lit, hybrid memoirs, sci-fi and fantasy fiction especially from BIPOC, queer and trans voices
Evernight Publishing: for erotica. Royalties seem good and their response time is solid
Felony & Mayhem: for literary mystery fiction. Not currently looking for new work, but check back later
This is all what I could find in an hour. And it's not even everything, because I sifted out the expired links, the repeat genres (there are a lot of options for YA and children's authors), and I didn't even include a majority of smaller indie pubs where you can really do that weird shit.
A lot of them want you to query, but that's easy stuff once you figure it out. Lots of guides, and some even say how they want you to do it for them.
Not submitting to a Big 5 Trad Pub House does not make you any less of a writer. If you choose to work with any publishing house it can take a fair bit of weight off your shoulders in terms of design and distribution. You don't have to do it - I'm not - but if that's the way you want to go it's very, very, very possible.
Have a weirder manuscript that you don't think fits? Here's a list of 50 Indie Publishers looking for more experimental works to showcase and sell!
If Random House won't take your work - guess what? Maybe you're too cool for Random House.

Y’all….I’m done!
I’ve been a little quiet for a reason. As I said before in another post, I’ve been pretty busy lately. Friend stuff. Writing stuff. Relaxing stuff. Getting ready for an end of summer trip AND prepping for a new school year, teaching at a new school. A lot has been happening.
BUT I just finished my first draft of TLBH. Like…I’m done! My minimum goal was 85k and today, I hit 85,144, which I am perfectly happy with. I am so excited to be done and really proud of myself for sticking with it.
Now, I will be taking a break from looking at this WIP and anything to do with it. Editing and second draft stuff will sit on the back burner for a bit. I have an idea for another story that I wanna work on and haven’t been able to dig into too much lately because I wanted to finish this project first, so I will start shifting my focus to this standalone project before going back to my big series stuff.
Now, whenever I play different tag games and such, I’ll have two different stories to pick from.
Thanks everyone who’s followed me, liked, reblogged, etc. Thanks for all the asks and tags and all the support. You guys are really awesome and I can’t wait to share other stuff with you all. :) 🤍

October is Pride Month in South Africa. As a queer artist from South Africa, it is important that we strive to share queer narratives in all art forms.
One of the biggest reasons I wrote this book was because growing up I wanted to see someone who looked like me and was like me. Someone who was a person of colour and queer in a world of magic.

ONLY 10 DAYS LEFT!
Grab your copy of the 'In the Neck of the Woods' horror anthology by pledging to the Kickstarter!
Tumblr media
Take a look at the Kickstarter page!
We're now 100% funded - thank you so much to everyone who has pledged! There's still time to pledge to grab a copy and some merch!
What's the scariest thing about camping?
Maybe everything?
Find all new ways to be horrified of the dark with the aid of this spectacular anthology, featuring sixteen terrifying tales centred around one of the creepiest activities out there, camping! Better yet, this collection of unique horror stories has been written exclusively by BIPOC and LGBTQ+ writers.
Although the theme is camping, this anthology features a wide range of horror sub-genres. Each story is vastly different from the next! 'In the Neck of the Woods: A Horror Anthology' has a little bit something for everyone, including but not limited to: monsters, thrillers, psychological horror, historical horror, clowns, ghosts, and cults.  This book will also feature an additional table of contents with trigger warnings for those who are sensitive to certain topics (hate spiders? same here!)
Greykin Press is solely focused on sharing the voices of marginalised communities, and we couldn't have found a better group of writers to feature in the very first book in our horror anthology collection! We know you'll love it as much as we do.
Check out the Kickstarter page to see what you can get by pledging and helping us bring this project to life!

Hi yes
How do I befriend writers on Tumblr so I may buy their ebooks and write reviews of their books and spread word of their writing?
I am terrible at this whole "connecting with social media accounts" thing but I'd very much love to give Tumblr authors a shout out on my blog! Especially since everyone was down for my representation masterpost!
If you are an author who writes about:
Queer identities
BIPOC identities
Mental illness
Mental disabilities
Physical disabilities
PLEASE SEND ME A LINK TO YOUR EBOOK!
I will add it to my TBR!!!! It will get talked about and reviewed!!!! I will buy a physical version to donate to my hospital!!!!

Intro to WIP - Book 1/4
Tumblr media
TLBH
"'You underestimate the power of mortals. They are, of course, insignificant in the grand scheme of it all, but that never seems to discourage them. They have the will and audacity that should only be reserved for gods. For us. They fight for lost causes. They long for old corpses. They refuse to quit. It is quite bothersome at times.'" --Maloria, Chapter 1
Genre: Fantasy
Status: First Draft; started January 1, 2023
Progress/Target: 56.5k/80-90k
Themes and Tropes: portal to another world, prophecies, chosen one, found family, rivals/enemies to lovers, sibling rivalry
Age Rating: 17+
Warnings: violence, death, mental illness
Plot: Seth and Zayna are the co-captains of their university's debate team and they can't stand each other. After yet another heated argument, they are sent off to the school's library in an attempt to force them to work together, but of course, something strange happens while they're there and the two are transported to a different world. There, the two meet many different citizens--some of whom are a great help to them and some that are anything but. Seth and Zayna just want to get home, but the deeper they get into this world, the more they find out it won't be as easy as they thought. Can they put aside their disdain for each other to reach a common goal, or will they let petty arguing ruin them and their chances of getting back?
Extra details: Black female lead. Cherokee male lead. Plenty of LGBTQ rep and many Black and POC characters.
