Fish Flag

What does Fish mean?

Fish is a black exclusive term for a femme lesbian. This label was first recorded as a counterpart the label 'Stud' in a Masters of Arts thesis titled, 'A Study of a Public Lesbian Community' by Ethel Sawyer. Black masculinity is to Stud as Black femininity is to Fish.

The Flag: Symbols and Colors

School of Black Fish: In the original flag I found on my dash, estrogenism uses an image of a tropical fish to represent the body diversity among black femmes. I decided to go with a school of fish to represent the community among black femmes. Initially, I wanted the school to look like a crescent moon to represent femininity further, but I wasn't fuckin' with it.

The darkest purple: Womanism (a feminist school of thought centered around the black experience)

2nd darkest purple: Black sapphicism

2nd lightest purple: Black sapphic history

Lightest purple: Unity between all fish (trans, cis, intersex, aspec, arospec etc)

A Public Study of a Lesbian Community by Ethel Sawyer (This study was done by a heterosexual woman. Due to the time it is from, harmful stereotypes of both studs and fish are portrayed in this thesis. These misconceptions are incredibly dated.)

Note: Based on the reading that I have done (Including the original thesis itself), some bisexual women were involved in the lesbian bar culture and identified with the label Fish. Out of the 7 fish interviewed by Sawyer, 2 out of 7 (28%) enjoyed sex with men. That being said I don’t mind or care if black bisexual femmes use this flag. But please understand the difference between presenting femininely and femme culture within the sapphic context (specifically butchfemme/studfemme/stud-fish community) before using this label.

Sunset Ocean Pride Flag

I had this idea to make a flag for people who are gay for both men and women, without it being tied to a specific label. Whether you identify as bi, pan, omni, queer, gay, sapphillean, velaurian, unlabeled, or whatever the case may be, you can use this flag if you are gay for both men and women. Personally, I am gay in all directions and identify as bi, omni, queer, and gay.

The flag incorporates themes from both the sunset lesbian flag and the ocean gay flag, hence it being based on a sunset over an ocean. It visually symbolizes the unity of both gay attraction to women, and gay attraction to men. (Not necessarily exclusively! People who experience attraction to nonbinary people are also included, as are people whose attraction is not strictly gay. I'm attracted to all nonbinary genders, and my attraction to women and primarily woman-aligned people is partially straight.)

The top three stripes represent the "sunset" portion of the flag, and have meanings inspired by the lesbian flag.

Grape represents gay attraction to women. You may also describe this as lesbian attraction, sapphic attraction, trixic attraction, or whatever else you may prefer, as long as it essentially feels gay.

Rose represents independence, serenity, and peace. These were three major themes in the sunset lesbian flag which were not shared with the ocean gay flag.

Coral represents diversity, community, and love. These were themes present in both the sunset lesbian and ocean gay flags, which is part of why this portion of the sunset also represents marine life. The sky blue stripe in the ocean section shares this meaning.

The center white stripe represents gender nonconformity, transgender/genderqueer people, intersex people, and unique relationships to gender and sex. These were themes present in both the sunset and ocean flags, and are also common meanings for center white stripes in queer flags.

The bottom three stripes represent the "ocean" portion of the flag, and have meanings inspired by the ocean gay flag.

Sky blue represents diversity, community, and love, as the coral stripe does. This portion of the ocean also represents the sky.

Lapis represents joy, healing, and fortitude. These were three major themes in the ocean gay flag which were not shared with the sunset lesbian flag.

Dark indigo represents gay attraction to men. You may also describe this as vincian attraction, achillean attraction, toric attraction, or whatever else you may prefer, as long as it essentially feels gay.

You do not need permission to use this flag for any reason, whether it is for personal or commercial use. It is public domain.

When he is down to his own underwear, he follows Carlos broad back and deep footsteps again. The lake isn’t too big, even surface like a bright mirror stretching out to the other shore he can only make out as black schemes. Drawing closer, his soles meet damp sand and tiny smooth rocks that Carlos’ every step seems to evade as they stand side by side by the bank of the lake. 

TK flinches as the first gentle wave laps at his toes. “Shit, that’s cold.”

Carlos looks at him, his ankles already in the water like he didn’t need to make a step for the lake to try and get to him first. Slowly, he reaches out a hand. “I’m not powerful enough to heat up the entire lake, but if you hold onto me, I could keep you warm.”

There’s a confidence in it, smooth as the water surface, so TK tries not to let his own nerves show as he grasps Carlos’ hand. Instantly, the zip of electricity kicks in like a pacemaker, only this time, additional warmth flows out from his palm, to his arm and torso, until he feels like he is a source of heat himself. In unity with Carlos, whose hands have gone from warm to the same temperature, as they sync up.

He can’t be sure but it feels like the water is the softest he ever waded through, the ground doesn’t have the give it usually has as you fight through mud. His wounds sting but it’s barely noticeable. 

If TK is depleted by the day, Carlos seems recharged by the night. 

“What exactly did you have in mind?” TK asks, remembering that he has no idea if this is anything but a midnight splash.

Description

The allegorical figures of Painting and Poetry represent the famous theme explored by Horace in Ars Poetica. The concept of UT PICTURA POËSIS (“so in painting as in poetry”) is expressed by Furini in the Sapphic kiss and embrace of the two figures, arranged almost symmetrically, and in the interplay of gestures which visually represent the mutual relationship between the two sister arts. Painting, depicted on the left, holds a palette and brushes in one hand, tools for art as the imitator of nature, and a mask in the other, a reference to the imitation of human actions. Poetry, on the right, holds a quill, while the inkwell sits atop the scroll signed with the motto CONCORDI LVMINE MAIOR. This motto was coined by Furini himself and aims to emphasize the Horatian concept of unity between the two arts, serving as a reminder that both painting and poetry are of greater quality when seen in the same light.

The painting was correctly attributed to Francesco Furini only a few decades ago, thanks to the discovery of the signature almost completely hidden in the hem of the yellow robe worn by Poetry. The work, dated in 1626, was commissioned by the prestigious Accademia del Disegno in Florence to mark the celebrations of its patron saint, Saint Luke, in 1624. The painting met with such appreciation as to earn the painter membership of the institution, and inspired a second version of the subject by Galileo Galilei. Indeed, the work represents a fundamental moment of Furini's career, highlighting his maturing style in the context of Florentine painting in the early seventeenth century.

I really want to say thank you for being inclusive. As a transmasc butch who sees butch as my gender, i'm often excluded from lesbian spaces, and some people will even be actively hostile, and accuse me of invading womens spaces or appropriating lesbian culture. So in sapphic or lesbian spaces it can be really difficult for me to feel safe, since their opinion on people like me is usually ambiguous.

You being so outwardly supportive and inclusive means a lot, because finally there is a space where I can feel safe because I know it's an accepting place to be. Thank you for creating that space 💙

My heart goes out to you for experiencing such challenging and hostile environments when all persons, especially those deeply marginalised, erased, invisible in this world, deserve to have safe and inclusive communities. To feel like they belong and are rooted in our shared ideals of Love and Unity.

It is frustrating that so much of queer history has been eroded, that lesbians and sapphics who have benefitted from intersectional and inclusive butches and femmes activism and sacrifices, have forgotten their roots. Just how much Lesbian progressiveness is owed to butches and femmes for our pre-political presence and political contributions, to this very day.

Especially in our current world that grows scarier, intolerant and violent.

This is a continuous intergenerational struggle that our elders had faced too. How valiant and empowering they were just by existing, and how this applies to our butches and femmes presently. And yet, they were battling against much misunderstanding, ignorance and intolerance from within the Lesbian community too.

You are brave for still venturing out and striving to find a space that will accept who you are, without compromising your identity and your lived truth. Your dignity deserves to be respected, always. I hope it is as rewarding for you as it is for me, that the Bar is able to be that safe space.

gearrán: a word in the gaelige language that literally translates to a gelding, or a pack-horse, but can refer to a "strong-boned woman; a drudge; a jade" as per Ó Dónaill (1977). a strong euphemism for a butch lesbian, this term is sometimes also translated as "dyke" or "masculine lesbian".

flag symbolism:

deep purple: purple has been long associated with lesbians and sapphics, especially in the shades of lavender and violet. purple may also reference sappho's musings about beautiful women wearing crowns woven of violets. this color represents lesbianism, now and historically.

pink mauve: mauve is a color that evokes feelings of romance, love, and passion. this color represents lesbian love and passion, however that looks and/or is expressed.

light orange: orange is a color associated with pleasure, enjoyment, optimism, warmth, and pride. it is also a core color in the irish flag. this color represents pride in being a lesbian, specifically an irish lesbian.

creme white: white often symbolizes purity and peace. this color represents unity amongst lesbians of all kinds, and nonconformity to gender and sexual expectations.

green citron: citron and the color green are associated with vitality, prosperity, and good fortune. this color represents not only the vitality of the irish spirit, but the prosperity and rich history of lesbians.

light shamrock green: shamrock green is associated with playfulness, nature, and life. it is a symbol of ireland, and frequently used in relation to celtic heritage. this color represents pride in being irish, love for the land, and the connection between heritage and spirituality.

dark spring green: dark spring green is also associated, as other shades of green are, with nature, vitality, and prosperity. this shade in particular symbolizes harmony, growth, and vibrancy. this color represents the strength and resilience of irish peoples, particularly in relation to liberatory struggles and queer identity.

celtic horse symbol: this symbol shows a horse whose body becomes wrapped upon itself, creating celtic knots and beautiful curls, ending in a fish-like tail. the horse is represented with the intention to emphasize the connection between the literal translation of the word gearrán as gelding or pack-horse and the associated meaning of a jade (a broken-down, "worthless" horse and/or a disreptuable woman) and of butch lesbians. the celtic imagery ties into the relationship of celtic heritage to irish history and identity, especially prior to colonization.

author's note: i put a lot of care and thought into this flag and i am particularly proud of it. thank you to the irish-language blogger kevin-ar-tuathal and their post on LGBTQ+ terminology in Gaeilge for introducing me to this term! i hope my flag honors your understanding of the term. additionally, i want to make clear that while i am irish-american, i identify very closely with my irish roots and i practice a form of celtic paganism which i value deeply. these things inform how i came to make this flag.
