Do you ever base the scenarios and such of the batfam around stuff that happened to you or around you?
So the incorrect quotes I just pull from other media. For headcanons, it kinda depends. Sometimes I'll take a small detail from canon and build off of that. Other times I'll see something and either be reminded of a piece of canon or I'd just go "they totally would."
I don't tend to mix in personal stuff with fan content as much. I'll occasionally dip into the things around me for inspiration at a surface level, like a joke I heard or a small, funny, inconsequential situation. I don't really do emotions that well and it's not the main focus of my blog anyway, but the moments I do, I draw more from either the source material or other fan creators because (in my opinion at least) my life experience is different enough from the characters that it would be glaringly obvious that I'm projecting.

TF2 updated so I'm taking this post out of drafts:
The TF2 Mercs are a part of the internet equivalent of the commedia dell'arte stock characters. Being automatically included in Source derivative software such as SFM and GMod, they're very easily available as premade rigs for amateur animators to use in their works. The simple, cartoony, and discernible designs make them very easy to read at any angle, which although originally used to be easily read in a competitive gaming environment, translates well to comedy skits. Unlike similar games such as Overwatch, where they're practically over-designed in a very definite artstyle, TF2 characters are lacking in accessories as a default. Generally wearing simple single color jackets, t-shirts and pants. In fact, the varied nature of TF2's cosmetic system makes them perfect as dress-up dolls, making it very easy to reuse the same base model and differentiate between them.
That brings me to their characterization. Even though most if not all have pretty well defined backstories and narratives, outlined in the supplementary media of comics and Meet the Videos, their baseline personalities can be easily transplanted into various skits and narratives with minimal introduction. Scout is a cocky jackass. Soldier is a dimwitted, overly patriotic American. Heavy is simultaneously soft-spoken and boisterous Russian who revels in violence. These simple yet understood personalities mean you can bypass proper character introductions by identifying who's in what role from the start, similar to the archetypes from the aforementioned commedia dell'arte.
You don't even have to be a fan of tf2 to grasp these roles. The ubiquity of SFM as free 3d animation software is a self supporting introduction. If you are unfamiliar with tf2's narrative, simply consuming a handful of these animations can get you up to speed.
Simultaneously, TF2's narrative is just as batshit as the fan animations that are inspired by it. You could certainly use other valve properties for similar reasons regarding animation accessibility, but TF2 embracing comedy from the start and the simple insanity of its characters means you can transport them to a wider array off stories while asking for a much smaller suspension of disbelief.
A Half Life animation is far more likely to be about Half Life than any given TF2 animation is about TF2. Many of them are, but way more are simply not.
TF2 as a property has a lot of staying power. 16 years now and even with minimal support from valve, it still soldiers on (pun intended) as a significant part of internet meme culture. I find it's notoriety akin to Hatsune Miku, where they're given a second life outside of the purpose of their original creation. They're less FPS characters, and more little dolls novice animators smack together for the entertainment of others.
And at the end of the day that's almost all it really takes. A significant slice of media engagement and fan works for the internet at large could not care less about Canon or the main narrative, even if its well regarded, because the biggest draw for many is simply taking strong personalities and putting them in funny situations. It's why incorrect quotes are absolutely everywhere despite the fact that a good 80% of them do not fit the original characters one bit. Meanwhile, TF2 as a property actively encourages it.
The following are all fan animations that have jack shit to do with each other or the original canon--be it in game, the original animations, or expanded comics--and yet they're still ultimately cohesive as these little shorts that play with the cast as archetypes, with their own recognizable appearances and roles. (Tucked behind Keep Reading to save space)

—🎈WRITERS AND ARTISTS APPRECIATION POST🧸— Contents: I'm being quite expressive AXCHOL-
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @the-v-lociraptor
Ayo, Raps, you are incredibly awesome, I would be down to know about your yuusona, an enthusiast Riddle fan I can simply sense it. Classic choice 😌! I have seen glimpses of you chatting with Ceru and it's only a few crumbs and holy, your brainrot has me invested about your oc lore and background. If we talk more together then I could rant longer---
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @twistedtalking / (Already sent.)
I gotta say, your concept is unique, I commend you for keeping the characters as accurate as the source material your best as a fellow newer twst writer. Love your incorrect quotes, your ramblings and your humor within the fics you do too. You're doing fantastically and I'm here to cheer you!
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @suiseisyojo / (Already sent.)
Your headcanons and stories are magnificent, Shye 🥺✨ I feel there's an air of being so well-put, something that when I look, it's like a fairytale with many wondrous moments happening inside and how you display is unprecedented, it's one of my favorites. Your characterization on the boys had me amazed when I go over it to study how it came to be. I love the header and fonts you have ♥️ it's a line with color like pink or black I suppose 🍬
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @ceruleancattail /(Already sent.)
Let me think how I'll break it down into words, your stories are as if they are cotton candies, tarts, so picture yourself getting thrown into a dream that has scenery so wonderful that you don't want to ever wake up from. In truth, anything sinister is hiding beneath that welcoming grace, the inhabitants there just won't let you leave💕 Your writing is both a paradise and can be nightmare depending on the will of your hands.
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @kurukuryu / (Already sent.)
When I think about your art, it's as if I'm at a cafe ♥︎ where I can smell a lot variety of sweets with dozens of grand aesthetics paintings! Your sketches are marshmallows, I want to gobble them up honestly <33 they are precious, made me melt on my mind too🌷 I like seeing you talking about everything in general, your yume, ocs, literally anything. And I hope I can be a good friend to you ☕️ˊˎ·˚ ༘
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @cxlemon / @cxsinesis
I have to say, your portrayals are ornate and euphemistic to look and read at. In my opinion, the imagery, metaphors, how you deliver had me think that it's not just standard actions. Makes me wonder how many years and efforts did it take you to polish your vocabularies and style. Because it's an art and a masterpiece. Other nsfw fics highlights more on the behavior part, that's great too but there's loftiness in your themes and narration. You gave me inspiration on what I might do🥺
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @kunehori
Your illustrations are hypnotizing, it's as if I'm at the ocean, listening to seagulls chirping, it's peaceful, and I feel so happy and smile like a moron when I saw you on my dash. You can draw and devise texts to form a whole universe with the tip of your brush and on papers. It's fluffy. Beautiful. You captured my attention to your ideas and words. I'm speechless and honored you're here, Ari. (Ty for being a pal on my main too andgjshdheb.)
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @cupids-chamber
When I visualize about the imparting, it leaves butterflies in my stomach, it's so melodious to my ears, I would never get bored by your writing because it's like I'm in a land of ethereal with spells and myths. You have stolen my sight and mind. I'm enamored to whatever you described in the fable. You have motivated me to broaden my perspectives on that fanfics are frankly precious to me.
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @blues824
YOUR DILIGENCE IS ADMIRABLE. You did for a lot of fandoms in your account, ranging from anime to even webtoons, you must be experienced on what you're doing, absolutely no doubt on it. And ahem, if you ever have a side blog, lemme notice, I'll be the first to follow you on it because you're amazing. Like seriously, I meant my praise 🍰
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @siphoklansan
Gurl, you have the most delicious abilities to craft things. I hope you will get excellent scores on tests by the way, rooting for you all the way there. I love how you transform our Thai culture and adapted it into your comic panels, it's truly refreshing because I'm very much immersed to when you verbalized it.
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @oepionie
It's official that you are one of my favorites. Your headcanons, drabbles, and fics are poetic. They are what grasped my heart, had me blush and squeal to myself whenever I turned around to scrutinize them. Kind of like how it's luring me into the rabbit hole where Alice has once fallen into a dark abyss. To the unknown and it's going to be adventurous 🌻
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @treytheslay
I eat up your yandere and dark contents, especially if it's about my fav twst characters. Looking forward to the series and what you will plan in your blog. I'm weak to your prompts because I am so fond and curious on what type you will brew up for us to consume next. Will it be angst? Heartbreaking?
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @miinprn /Not related in twst fandom.
I have been a mutual with you a long time on twt, ever since tog and etc, your doodles and personality is just so comforting to be with and I adore how you color and draw your portraits, they are super pretty. Never stop being yourself, okay? I will always be here for you and encourage you to your goal🪴
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
For @hxjikonn
I am feral for your literature dear Haji, god tier stuff right there, I'm telling you 100% because I'm nuts for your imagination and snippets you have. I am totally fine with you being on hiatus as well. Drink a lot of water, have a great break as you look after yourself in reality and managing your life<3

Hi welcome to the Hellp Desk this is hell, where my truama is chronic but my sass is iconic
Hello! Im Cadet! This is a fanblog for Hells Belles on Tik Tok, focusing on mainly Incorrect Qoutes, but maybe other things such as original fan art (made by yours truely), Capcut templates with the main cast, aesthetics, fanworks/headcannons, and other stuff!
Rules:
Incorrect qoutes submitted by others is absolutely allowed and encouraged!
Helles bells is a series that covers things such as Reglious trauma, child abuse, substance abuse, homo/transphobia, child loss among other things. This may be referenced in the blog and while this blog is lighthearted, if those things upset you then I understand if you cant stay around for the ride.
In saying that, this Blog is 16+. This is hell after all and spicy content may be referenced or stated (no explicit NSFW but if you’re bothered by the word sex then this also isn’t for you)
ANY PROSHIPPERS AND BIGOTS WILL IMMEDIATELY BE BLOCKED. There’s a special place on level nine waiting for you.
All ships here are the canonical ones in Hells Belles. (Lilly x Bell, Penny x Greg, Sharkie x Violence, ect.) so no crack shipping here
We have at least one Garenteed incorrect qoute a day at 5:00 pm (MST). Others may be shattered through the day as inspiration strikes
If the original source isnt specified, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me where the original source is so proper credit can be provided. All quotes come from all corners of the internet so credit may have been lost in translation
The tag 🔥sticky sausages🔥 is for… content that may allude to the mattress mambo if you will.
The tag Art Style Envy is for all reblogged artwork of Hells Belles. Go support the original artist!
The tag Tea time with Judy is reblogged content that revolves around the Belles themselves that doesn’t have anything to do with art
The tag Cadet art is Orginal art done by me!
The tag Cadet Chats is when it’s exclusively me talking to you guys.
And finally, the most important rule of all: if i say anything misinformed, ignorant, or something that bothers you, please let me know so that i can take accountability and fix it. I am not religious or have religious trauma (only secondhand). And while i dont talk about religion itself, i dont want to say anything potentially ignorant.
And with that said, Welcome to hell!

Tired of every single day seeing 29583995 posts about how you are supposed to engage in fandom and how everyone who engages differently is wrong and bad and not allowed to do this and that.
Literally do not understand why people are so pressed about what other people are doing for fun.
Do I find the way people interpret/misinterpret some characters to be annoying and baffling at times? Yes! I think everyone does. But that doesn't mean the person who is over there having a fun time not hurting anyone is at fault for it. You can block them and move on and say nothing.
This was inspired by a screenshot of someone saying something to the tune of "normalize mischaracterizing your comfort characters. I dont care whether or not they would canonically do something." And someone retweeted (to a seemingly large audience) telling them that they must not actually like the character. Which feels pretty mean-spirited to an innocuous post about how someone chooses to engage with something that comforts them.
And I honestly think the original person had a point. Normalizing it does not mean YOU have to do it or YOU have to like people's interpretations, it means that people will be allowed to engage in harmless fun without everyone getting up and arms and making assumptions about them or QRTing their post to thousands of people calling them a fake fan.
Everyone has a different idea of what fun and comfort is and for some people that's making wacky AUs or exaggerating traits and playing dollhouse and for others that meticulously researching and nailing down every canon detail in their works. Some people like tiktok and incorrect quote edits and some like meta and deepdives into and it's all okay and fine!
Someone doesn't HAVE to make an OC. If they want their quick fix of comfort and catharsis by just tacking traits on to a pre-made character that they don't have to expend extra energy on then who cares?
Also lots of neurodivergent people (like myself) and kids get caught in the crossfire as well, but really I think EVERYONE should have the right to do what they want. This feels like another extension if cringe culture which should be dead an buried by now.
And I say all this as a person who PREFERS to engage in fandom in a canon-compliant, lore-friendly way and yet has also been the victim of this.
I have had bad/mean fandom experiences over presenting evidenced, well-sourced, and canon compliant material that just happens to contradict popular fanon. I have also received backlash for putting a character through 10+ years of canon-compliant, well researched, and carefully constructed character development which led them to do things differently in the future than they did in canon.
But I don't always feel like giving a 20+ paragraph disclaimer on every single doodle, edit, or short fic to prove to you exactly how they got here and why it's canon compliant (although I unfortunately DO tend to do this to avoid repeats of past hate :/) because it really shouldn't matter. Blocking me outright or blocking my tags should suffice.
I will never understand this mentality of "Only I do things correctly, everyone else is wrong and bad and ruining everything and I have to shame people doing harmless things so everyone sees how right I am" and I feel like I've been seeing it more and more every day lately and it's frustrating. This is a big part of why I left twitter but it's getting popular here too now.
This is honestly a big part of why I don't post the majority of my fanart and fics anymore. I no longer post meta or silly edits, I no longer reach out to people to discuss ideas, I rarely share my thoughts on any characters publicly, etc.
I live a very stressful life and I engage in fandom to relax and have fun but that has been very difficult for me due to people who always feel the need to be hateful over innocuous things. I feel more and more like I need to walk on eggshells so I do not accidentally incite another ✨️incident✨️ because I dared to post a silly headcanon or edit. And that sort of hate and "umm, actually..." response STILL happens to me, even in recent days because god forbid I post an AU I enjoyed and wished to share with people who might also enjoy it!! It's so frustrating.
And this, of course, is NOT referring to people who try to force/shame others into their interpretations (regardless of if they are compliant or not). This is also NOT about bigoted material. Turning characters into harmful stereotypes (making a black woman who is not sassy sassy, for example), using them to spread hateful messages, and erasing their identities/whitewashed their designs. That is a separate issue. But someone making a character you like say something they wouldn't say in canon? Making them act a little silly? Ignoring parts of canon to make an idea they have work? It's not hurting anyone!!!

💀 Self Ship Ask Meme: The Cerberus's Den Drink Menu! 💀
i tried to make these as relationship-neutral as possible so they could work for any kind of f/o!
Borehole: What's a fact about your F/O that you feel like nobody knows or cares about but you? Talk about it!
Sour Grouse: Is there something about the way your F/O is treated or characterized in their source that bothers you? Rant about it!
Armageddon Punch: Do you think your F/O could beat the person who sent you this's F/O in a fight? (If the person was an unsigned anon, you can also use the person you reblogged this meme from!)(Sender can specify which F/O of theirs the receiver's F/O is fighting if they want)
Djinn and Tariff: Uh oh! You, as you are right now, just got randomly transported to your F/O's world, right in front of them! Luckily, you get to choose the point in the story when it happens. Which moment do you choose? How do the two of you react?
Tax on the Beach: Describe (or post a picture if you want) your favorite moment from your F/O in their source! Why is that your favorite?
Bloody Gary: What "incorrect quotes"-type conversation best describes you and your F/O? (Here's a generator if you need some inspiration)
Corpse Reviver: Do you notice any specific categories, types, or trends with your F/Os? What are they?
Heat Death of the Universe Iced Coffee: What's a small quirk or behavior your F/O has that you go absolutely hog wild over every time?
Milk: If, before you engaged with your F/O's source, someone had told you that you'd get super attached to that character, would you have believed them? Why or why not?
Death and Taxes: Describe the moment when you became absolutely certain that you were going to F/O this character.
Sugar and Spice: What three items/concepts would you say "make up" your F/O, metaphorically speaking?
Rainbows and Puppies: Name off as many of your favorite qualities of your F/O as you can think of in the moment!
Beeps and Boops: Regardless of the type of media your F/O is actually from, if you could render your self ship's story as any form of media (a book, a movie, a game, etc.) what would it be?
Blood and Guts: If all your F/Os in every category (or just other characters you like if you only have one F/O) were in a fighting game together, who would you main and why?
please forgive the insulting names on some of these i promise they aren't meant that way. you don't have to send me anything to reblog this but please practice reblog karma with other people!

hey pal, i dont remember if i sent you an ask already??? so just in case here; bloody gary, milk, and heat death of the universe ice coffee for shapesmith :v?
Tumblr media
hehe u did, so i'm going to answer all of these!! :]
Bloody Gary: What "incorrect quotes"-type conversation best describes you and your F/O?
ooh i've actually played around with an incorrect quotes generator a while ago and got some i really liked!! :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heat Death of the Universe Iced Coffee: What's a small quirk or behavior your F/O has that you go absolutely hog wild over every time?
i really love how expressive they are, both in the way they move & emote!!! i really hope that's something that gets picked up in the animated series somehow, like i imagine him to always move in a somewhat exaggerated way, like he's always got a bit of that Roger Rabbit feel to him lmao. not to the point where it feels jarring, but i think it'd be fun if he just...was animated a bit more cartoony than the others, if that makes sense. they are just a silly guy <3
ALSO, another thing i've talked about before that's really really sweet to me is that he...kinda seems to enjoy casual physical touch :') i'm mostly basing this on two instances of him putting his hand on people's shoulder in the comic while taking to them which. i know that's kind of nothing but it has lead to me headcanoning him as someone who's just very prone to these kind of casual little touches (while staying respectful of people's boundaries of course) and probably also enjoys people doing the same to him....also ky's head probably exploded the first time he placed a hand on their arm while talking to them
Milk: If, before you engaged with your F/O's source, someone had told you that you'd get super attached to that character, would you have believed them? Why or why not?
i'm. pretty sure i wouldn't have, because i honestly didn't pay that much attention to them during my first time reading the volumes he appeared in dsjkhskj 💀 i mean, MAYBE if someone had given me all the information there's to know about them because he does check a few boxes when it comes to the type (or one type, at least) of characters i like, but?? i still have to admit that he was just kinda unremarkable to me when he first appeared, i actually skimmed over a lot of his scenes and had to go back to reread them later once i became...more interested in them....i was also actually way more interested in another character from their source before my brain started focusing on them and fully expected to f/o said character which. obviously did not end up happening. so like, overall i guess it's definitely not like i would have been appalled by the idea of becoming attached to him, but it would've been hard for me to believe that i'd love him as much as i do now because my first reaction was basically just "...eh"? falling in love with them was definitely a very unexpected (but welcome) turn of events for me lmao
Corpse Reviver: Do you notice any specific categories, types, or trends with your F/Os? What are they?
Hfjfjf honestly i would love to know if anyone notices a type because it's...really hard for me to pin down. i guess when it comes down to it, i really like characters who are just sort of. nice and silly??? even if it's hidden behind a though/serious exterior sometimes....also characters who are very passionate about something i guess!!! i think all in all in just like characters that feel, hm, safe to me i guess?? as in, i think about them when i need someone to comfort me and i feel like i'd genuinely have fun being with them and like i wouldn't have to pretend to be someone else around them, like they'd actually love me for me and even encourage me to be myself and do the things i love - like, characters who inspire me in some way and make me feel more comfortable going out of my comfort zone?? i think at this point in my life i tend to gravitate towards characters who reflect traits that i'd actually love in a real life partner, which. i guess sounds very basic as far as types go?? but that's probably the closest i get to describing it jdjdjd
Beeps and Boops: Regardless of the type of media your F/O is actually from, if you could render your self ship's story as any form of media (a book, a movie, a game, etc.) what would it be?
definitely a comic!!!! i'm actually envisioning parts of it in my head constantly augh....i wish i had the time and energy necessary to actually create it </3
Tax on the Beach: Describe (or post a picture if you want) your favorite moment from your F/O in their source! Why is that your favorite?
i already answered this but i'm just gonna add another moment i really like......
Tumblr media
honestly i don't have anything profound to say i'm just kinda obsessed with this hkjfhf

The Surprising Link Between Humor and Motivation – Unearthing the Benefits of Funny Quotes
Tumblr media
In the often serious and high-pressure contexts of life, humor can act as an unsung hero, lifting spirits and encouraging a positive outlook. We are all familiar with the age-old advice to laugh more and not take life too seriously, but do we recognize it as a bona fide tool for motivation?
In this exploration, we venture into the delightful intersection of comedy and inspirational musing, unpacking why the odd chuckle may just be the pick-me-up your day needs.
The Unorthodox Path to Productivity: Why Laughter and Optimism Matter
Picture this: you're stuck in the middle of a hectic workday, deadlines looming, and stress levels creeping upwards. Then, a colleague slides a note your way with a side-splitting one-liner. Suddenly, the world seems a little brighter, tasks a tad more manageable. How can such a simple comedic act carry emotional weight?
Harnessing the Power of Positivity
Laughter and humor are like a power shake for the brain – they can increase dopamine levels which translates into a more positive and upbeat state of mind. Studies have often linked higher dopamine levels with an increased ability to tackle challenges and a general sense of reward. In a way, humor becomes a catalyst for a can-do attitude in the face of adversity.
Building a Resilient Mindset
Beyond the immediate satisfaction of a good laugh, the accumulation of positive experiences can lead to a more resilient mindset. Scientists draw parallels between the cognitive benefits of laughter and a toughened 'psychological immune system.' In essence, humor can be seen as a preemptive hit against the negativity that may otherwise derail one's focus and drive.
Sprinkling Your Day with Humor – The Daily Regimen of a Chuckle
If laughter and positive thinking can do wonders for your mental fortitude, the next step is to unearth how to sprinkle these benefits into daily life. Akin to a daily supplement, incorporating funny quotes can turn into a consistent source of inspiration.
Finding the Right Joke for the Right Moment
Much like a fine spice, the success of humor is often in its timing. Discovering the right type of humor that resonates with you can be a personal yet rewarding venture. From politically incorrect puns to Tinder-worthy quips, the spectrum of funny quotes is vast.
The Power of Repetition and Affirmation
By repeatedly exposing yourself to humor and its accompanying burst of positivity, you condition your mind to default to an optimistic response. This can help in forging a mental habit of responding to difficulties with a light-hearted approach, thereby strengthening your personal motivation.
Real-Life Smiles and Corporate Giggles – Case Studies in the Workplace
It's all well and good to theorize the benefits of humor, but does it stand the test of the modern workplace? Real-life examples illustrate that humor is not only compatible with but can enhance professional environments.
The Stand-Up Cubicle: An Enlasting Impression
Across industries, there are oft-told tales of humor leaving an indelible mark. From the hilarious newsletter editor who saw engagement soar, to the stand-up comedian turned project manager whose brainstorm sessions were as fruitful as they were funny, instances of humor's role in professional success are abundant.
Balancing Act: The Paradox of Focused Laughter
Counterintuitively, fostering an environment of laughter can lead to greater focus and productivity. When humor is used in moderation and with respect to others' sensibilities, it can act as a release valve, allowing teams to approach serious tasks with a more relaxed yet astute mindset.
A Compendium of Chuckles – Funny Quotes and Their Many Faces
Not all jokes are created equal, and thus, it's important to curate a collection of funny quotes that you can turn to. Here, we present a curation of humorous gems that cater to different facets of life.
The Office Jest: Quotes for Professional Ponderings

Raya sneaks into Fang to steal something, and Namaari catches her and scolds her for it.
Inspired from S1:EP18 of Kc Undercover.
Raya and Namaari: [arguing]
Both of them: I just can’t stand you!
Raya: so why didn’t you just turn me in.
Namaari: oh [chuckles] I should’ve. But I don’t need that bad mojo, okay? I don’t need your negative juju on me. I want you out of here, and out of my life. [turns and walks away]

On Chinese and Eastern Dramatic Acting vs Western
Part 1    Part 2
Mostly in ref to the Untamed/Word of Honor, but applies to a lot of East Asian works-
I’ve been getting the sense that people I know from the west (also being Asian-American myself) often interpret Chinese/Japanese/Korean drama and theatre to be too corny/cheesy/over-acted. A quick search on some internet forums confirms this. Maybe it’s because I used to watch a lot of C-dramas when I was a kid (Legend of the Condor Heroes/Return of C Heroes/Journey to the West/The Reincarnated Princess/etc), I personally did not notice that the acting was over the top.
I don’t really speak for the quality of acting of these actors because I barely follow them in their careers, but I do know that some of them are immature actors or don’t have much formal training (which may cause the cheesiness above). However, Eastern dramatic acting in general does seem like a common complaint, so I decided to look into it - this is all coming from someone who JUST recently got back into watching C-dramas btw, doing my own research so don’t mind me if there’s some incorrect things down here, I am by NO means at all an expert in drama and theater (lol):
Tumblr media
^Villains are often depicted with very exaggerated facial expressions (Above, Xue Yang, The Untamed)
Part 1
1. Chinese concept of mo vs western equivalent of “mimesis” or “imitation”
From this, an excellent chapter on Chinese theatrical concepts vs Western concepts.
Mo plays a significant part in traditional Chinese theatre, usually held to be antithetical to the realism of Western theatre because of its emphasis on theatricality.
Mo means mimesis or imitation, but in a very different sense from the Western concept. One of the first Chinese scholars to use this term, Fu Sinian, used it to compare Western theatre to Chinese theatre:
Presenting a real event and performing an entertaining show are not compatible. The former emphasizes imitation (yige zhong mofang^b); the latter stresses spontaneity and entertainment. The former performance produces a lifelike image; the latter has nothing to produce. The former puts emphasis on the plot; the latter puts emphasis on theatricality. Therefore they are completely contradictory to one another.
This guy actually goes onto critique Chinese theater, saying it should be more like Western realism, so that there will “be no singing, and the acting will imitate people’s real gestures.” However! Other Chinese critics tried to approach Western vs traditional Chinese drama as two DIFFERENT but still valid forms of art. For example, Yu Shangyuan (1927) said western performance is “writing realistically” (xie shi) and chinese performance as “writing suggestively” (xie yi). Western dramas really rely on an accurate/semi-accurate representation of life and realism. Traditional Chinese drama and acting relied on the “symbolic and imaginative.”
Then what is mo? It is the emotional display, the emotional revelation, that is shown on stage. Starting from the Yuan dynasty, the Chinese drama was thought to be a continuation of poetry rather than its own independent stage art.
Poetry is where the intent of the heart goes. Lying in the heart, it is “intent”; when uttered in words, it is “poetry.” When an emotion stirs inside, one expresses it in words; finding this inadequate, one sighs over it; not content with this, one sings it in poetry; still not satisfied, one unconsciously dances with one’s hands and feet. [anonymous, 1975, from Shi Daxu 200 BCE]
Chinese drama with dancing and singing, was the most expressive product of poetry. The importance of mo cannot be stressed enough - it is the measure by which traditional Chinese drama was judged, how well this drama make you feel? Love, pain, loss, guilt, happiness? Plot becomes something that doesn’t matter as much (more on that later).
Tumblr media
^Beijing/Peking Opera - highly stylized, emotive, “unrealistic” performances
To emphasize how central and important this concept is, it’s thought that a good Chinese playwright never fails to “seize a highly dramatic scene to stage an elaborate presentation of an emotional state.”
Love is of source unknown, yet it grows ever deeper. The living may die of it, by its power the dead live again. [Peony Pavilion, Mu dan ting]
This quote really shows how important it was to show these emotions on stage, to inspire the audience to feel deeply. Chinese critics believed that the best part about drama was how efficient it is to display emotion. Playwrights should “depict extreme bitterness, extreme happiness, extreme silliness, and extreme sobriety; imitate these feelings to the utmost (miao mo jin xing^p).”
Such performances are not necessarily accurately mimicking reality, but they are obtained through the “revelation” of a character’s internal emotional world.
2. Mo vs the depiction of reality or theatrical truth
The Chinese concept of aesthetic truth relates a lot to theatrical truth. In a lot of traditional Chinese art, painting, poetry, etc, aesthetic truth is not empirical, and doesn’t have to be accurate to life, or realistic. It’s a “truth that lies beyond mere superficial likeness.”
To the Chinese artist, an accurate resemblance between art and reality is not only superficial but often distorting. Chinese artists hold a dialectical view on the “form” (xing) and the “spirit” or “content” (shen) of an artistic object. According to them, xing  and shen are not always complementary. On the contrary, they often stand in opposition to one another. (referenced in the chapter above)
Traditional Chinese artists would rather represent the object with the wish that their representation matches its spirit, or abstract identity, than its actual form because a “photographic image is a shallow image.” It’s easy to draw a picture of something realistically, but it’s much harder and more satisfying to depict its nature, its feeling, its spirit.
This also naturally affects theater and dramatic performances.
Dramatic writing can be divided into two types: “a painting-like work” or a “transformed work,” in which the latter has higher artistic value because it reaches more towards the essence of dramatic object. Realistic imitations are fine, but they’re not really enough to reveal the mo or true feelings of something.
In addition, traditional Chinese dramatists believe that “all dramas are nothing but allegories. One need not ask about their origins in actual life.” You might be able to see, then, that these older playwrights and critics really fancied the overdramatic depictions of emotions.
a. The Chinese notion of theatrical truth/aesthetic truth vs European
Onto what we, as part of the Western audience, are more used to:
For Italian neoclassical critics, the pleasure of a drama hinges  on how accurate, how realistic, the depiction is. Castelvetro, the leading Italian Neo-Classical critic and creator of the concept of “the three unities,” claims thus:
We cannot imagine a king who did not exist, nor attribute any action to him.
Another Italian critic, Robortellus, said that a creative/imaginative story with no “verisimilitude” (truthfulness, in this context, realism) is less appealing than one that imitates a real-life event:
Thus if a tragic plot contained an action which did not really take place and was not true, but was represented by the poet himself in accordance with verisimiltude, it would perhaps move the souls of the auditors, but certainly less.
So basically, it’s fundamentally the opposite of Chinese theater. Italian dramatic works prized being realistic, being properly adapted from reality and real events. Chinese dramatic works, however, enjoyed the emphasis on heartfelt emotional demonstrations, or mo. Even in critical writings, the word “truth” is used, but it is usually used to modify the word “heart” or “emotion.” It is very concerned with the internal, the truthfulness of heartfelt emotional expression.
Taken these contexts, you can see why the Chinese stage/dramas are wholly “unreal” as Tao-Ching Hsu puts it. Everything, the makeup, the costumes, the props, is expressive and suggestive rather than imitative.
b. Bejing/Peking Opera, jingju
Tumblr media
A famous example is the Beijing/Peking Opera, jingju. The makeup and costumes themselves are fantastical representations. The colors and patterns suggest different moods, temperaments, characters, and even changes in emotions. Actors would make distinct movements to depict distinct emotions with varying levels of energy. The stage itself may be sparse, because it is not as important as the expression of emotion and drama.
The stage is sparse not because of the lack of technology or funding, but because it leaves room for the actor themselves to fully express their internal thinking/feeling/emotions. Characters can cross hundreds of miles in a few steps or may take the whole stage to cross a supposed road. This representation looks “unreal” to a realistic-minded audience, but it is very genuine to a Chinese audience.
Summary (so far)
This crucial understanding of the concept of mo (the emotional revelation), and the way traditional Chinese drama depicts life and stories, informs how their modern works are also portrayed. Coming from a Western dramatic background, where realism and plot are the most important aspects of a work, it can be very confusing, right? Even Chinese scholars began to judge their own dramatic works through a Western lens.
How does this traditional background affect modern Chinese dramas and works? I think it still has a very large effect, even though much of Western ideals about dramatic works have been heavily integrated into modern Chinese dramas.
