Romance as Defined by an Aro: A Poem

Romance for me is only what it is not;

it is the opposite of an absence of feeling in my chest,

it is clouds full of quiet, cool rain that wash over

the blue skies that normally soar through me.

If romance is that perfect temperature

at which you neither feel hot nor cold

I only know it when it has passed,

when a cool breeze ruffles me and pops gooseflesh

on my arms: but here's the thing:

as someone always overheated,

cold is a comfortable state for me.

I think so many would look at how I define romance:

emptiness, black instead of color, cold, rain -

and see something sad and bleak,

where I see only comfort and coziness.

I've always turned my face to the rain and smiled,

found cold refreshing and energizing,

found black soothing in the face of overstimulation -

emptiness is not an apartment where I have to work around

the walls all in my way,

but a place I can build my own home

in a shape that suits me.

I know romance when it visits

a guest in my anarchic home,

for the familiar and dear sight

of its otherwise empty chair.

I am faceblind to it,

but I know where it sits,

and so recognize it when by choice I invite it in.

They say if you love something set it free,

my romance is not chained to me

but wanders far and wide,

a free spirit like me.

Were it one day to never return,

that would not be a failed relationship,

but one I would cherish having had.

Not a commitment; a choice.

I am a strange aro

half-in, half-out,

with romance a rare visitor,

but one that has come inside.

I know it by its absence,

a set of shoes not by the door,

a toothbrush missing from my sink,

a coat they take from the hook to keep them warm.

My relationship with romance

is anything but amatonormativity.

And its familiar absence

is dear to me.

I have not seen Wednesday yet (saving it to watch with my mother) but already I see Wednesday and Enid shippers being pretty chill, talking cutely about their ship and it's the people who dislike that ship that are annoying as all hell 😭 I saw a cute edit of them and the comments are "actually Enid is straight" "they're more like sisters"

Like ship discourse is dumb enough as is but everytime theres a harmless and cute sapphic ship, there is always people saying they're more like sisters. Every. Time. Let us have a fun ship it's not that serious, we can all get along here.

You can dislike a ship without bringing in weird rhetoric us sapphics have to hear daily about our relations.

The whole thing with henren being completely ignored by the fandom is the reason why I can't take most takes on buddie canon and buddie queerbaiting seriously tbh. So many people complain that Fox is CoWaRdLy for not making buddie canon already and that they are QuEeRbAiTiNg for simply showing buck and eddie smile at each other like two human beings sometimes do (the things friends apparently never do according to the buddie fandom is long), and i'm flabbergasted by that. wdym Fox is "not brave enough to make buddie canon" lmfao? i could see their point if the show had given us absolutely zero queer representation, but the 911 universe as a whole does have (1) henren as a canon gay ship since day one, (2) michael, his coming out, and the story with his bf, (3) multiple more canon queer minor characters and ships (coffee shop gays? the old gay couple?), (4) tarlos as a big canon gay ship, (5) nancy as a canon bisexual, and (6) paul as a canon trans man... you have queer rep! it's right there! at this point, i think they have to ignore existing queer rep because it reveals how shaky their arguments about buddie-still-not-canon are. if you cannot blame the studio or the producers or the writers for not being "brave" or "woke" enough to write queer stories because they do in fact write queer stories, you inevitably have to face the fact that maaaybe buck and eddie were never written to be gay and become a couple.

I do agree with most of your points here but I do admit that, to me at least, it very much seems like buck and eddie are heading in that direction even if that wasn't the intent at first. there have been enough instances of subtle nods to the fact that, whether it be strictly platonic or not, they're definitely seen as the other's Partner (particularly in scenes where bobby is paired with athena and chim with maddie and hen with karen) BUT I mean. it could be platonic. or a qpr. or a nod to romance. the truth is, I don't really know, and neither does anyone else in this fandom. all we have is what's in front of us, and at the point we're at right now I can see it going in either direction. but that's all just what I, specifically, am taking from it so who can say

BUT PUTTING ALL THAT ASIDE. it's sooo insane to me how the 911 universe can have so much queer rep (GOOD queer rep. RESPECTFUL queer rep. BEAUTIFUL queer rep.) like all the characters u mentioned and yet such a large demographic of the fandom is COMPLETELY blind to it because their 2 male faves haven't fucked nasty onscreen yet. queerbaiting as a fandom term is already sooo often taken out of context but in this case!?!?!? girl I don't even think we're watching the same SHOW.

(I also think it's a classic case of the idea that queer rep = romantic relationship which while its INCREDIBLE to see henren and all the other queer couples, it's also SO IMPORTANT to have trans voices (like paul). and aro voices. and ace voices. so even if there's any canon evidence for either buck or eddie being queer in some way without it leading to buddie, it won't satisfy the fandom because too often, being queer and single Isn't Good Enough)

Se mi lasci ti cancello

Oggi vorrei dire due parole su un film che ho visto solo di recente: Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind conosciuto in Italia col titolo da commediola romantica Se mi lasci ti cancello (sigh!)

Perché ne voglio parlare?! Perché tra tutti i filmetti che esaltano l'amore romantico come il massimo a cui una persona può aspirare questo è forse il più terribile che ho visto.

Scusate se farò spoiler, ma il film è uscito da almeno 10 anni perciò ritengo siamo in zona safe altrimenti chiudete il post adesso.

Trama: un tizio incontra una tizia e su un treno attaccano bottone. Solo alla fine scopriremo che questo è il loro secondo incontro e i due erano già stati insieme e si erano lasciati in maniera piuttosto definitiva. Ma si sa, quando l'amore è vero... ma è amore questa roba?

Durante il film i due "innamorati" non fanno che dare prova di quanto non siano in sintonia su nessun argomento, non fanno che litigare e rinfacciarsi ogni sorta di cattiveria e meschinità. E alla fine prima lei e poi lui scelgono di cancellare l'altro dalla propria memoria.

Eppure alla fine del film gli eventi ci lasciano intendere che loro due siano fatti davvero l'uno per l'altra. Non importa quante offese e cattiverie si siano vomitati addosso, non importa il fatto che non abbiano nemmeno gli stessi progetti per il futuro (lei vuole figli ma lui non li vuole da lei), non importa quanto, molto probabilmente, sarebbero meno infelici non dico da soli (non sia mai) ma con qualcun altro. Il film ci suggerisce che alla fine di tutte le loro vicissitudini i due torneranno a stare (in)felici insieme.

Quanto può essere dannosa l'amatonormatività di questa società se ci propina come romantico lo stare con qualcuno con cui non abbiamo niente in comune?!? Anzi no, qualcosa su cui sembrano andare d'accordo c'è ed è il sesso. Le cose importanti, insomma.

So che il cinema e la letteratura e la musica campano di amore tra uomo e donna, ma almeno dateci storie in cui i due stanno insieme perché si fanno felici, non perché piuttosto che stare da soli meglio stare con qualcuno che odi.

Ma che schifo!

Okay, I have a question:

If Alastor the Radio Demon is a mixed-raced Creole man, in his 30s-40s as stated on the Hazbin Wiki,

And this is what Creole is,

And the Creole people from the Louisiana area look like this,

Then WHY THE FUCK, is a WHITE TWINKISH MAN, the most common way of drawing human!Alastor?

And I'm not saying mixed-race Creole people cannot be white, they can, it's how gentics work, but they would still have features that are distinct to their black ancestors! None of those fan works have any black features!

Now I have seen some really good human! Alastor fan works where he looks like a charming Creole man and not some slimeball white dude. But still, the white washing is just, not cute.

ALSO! Alastor is AROMANTIC AND ASEXUAL! As an aro/ace person, the aro/ace erasure is far too common, in fiction and in real life!

Also, some of the ships from Hazbin are like, why? The only romantic ships I like from the Hazbin fandom are Angel Dust x Husk and Charlie x Vaggie, a.k.a Huskerdust and Chaggie. They're cute and I love the grumpy x sunshine, in a sense, dynamic.
