Setup and Payoff
Dear Rookie writers: <clenches fist, looks out longingly onto a field of continuity> Look. I get it. You had to execute the ship. You were moved to an earlier time slot, so less risqué content. You tonally shifted to a comedy. Covid fucked your timeline, etc etc etc. FINE. I give you all of that.
But for the love of all that is good and holy can you PLEASE WRITE NORMAL FUCKING STORYLINES THAT MAKE SENSE.
Screenwriting is simple. Setup. Payoff. Like, for example:
— setup: show actively sets up friend ribbing friend about a coworker crush/romance. The PAYOFF would be said friend loses their shit when the coworkers actually get together (examples: Boyle in B99, Jacob in Abbott Elementary, Michael Scott in the Office, Schmidt for Nick and Jess in New Girl).
Tumblr media
— setup: show actively sets up consequences to office / coworkers finding out about secret romance. PAYOFF: actual work consequences happen (ie, Ben and Lesley break up in parks and rec).
Tumblr media
— setup: characters CONFESS THEIR FEELINGS to OTHER CHARACTERS in an ensemble cast so that the audience knows there are actual emotional stakes. PAYOFF: we get emotional insights and CLEAR emotional STAKES. (Ie, B99, Parks & Rec, New Girl, The Mindy Project).
Tumblr media
— setup: you have two characters who want to be together but can’t due to [insert obstacles]. Unresolved tension continues to rise until characters can be together. (Ie, Castle, X Files, Alias, ER, Buffy, Once Upon a Time).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every single move the Rookie has made this year has deflated each setup like a fucking pin in a balloon. — Lopez ribs Bradford about Lucy and in the end neither supposed bff brings up the romance again, save Lopez over some dumb radio message? (And we never get some confessional from Lucy to Nyla or anyone about how she pined for Tim in UC school, and all we get is some throwaway “*That* Bradford” one-liner?)
— Season One of Talia warning Lucy re: Nolan so they break up, to Seasons 2-4 of Lucy being a subordinate to Tim so nothing can happen, to Grey warning them about office romances, and in the end, we get ZERO reactions from any characters that they’re together and ZERO consequences to the relationship other than some mild Post-It wrangling?
— The unresolved tension that starts off with a bang in S1, ratchets up in S2 and complicates itself S3 and S4, never ACTUALLY gets addressed by Tim or Lucy confessing their actual feelings to each other? Just suddenly “if we do this” to “our kids will be xyz” in a few episodes?
I JUST DONT GET IT. I DONT UNDERSTAND setting up a storyline that could be SO FULL of juicy confessions, angst, longing, pining and just maybe ONE LITTLE SEXY SCENE FFS only to turn it into the MOST bland and milquetoast ship. I KNOW these characters can do hot and sassy and argumentative because we’ve seen it. They can definitely to angsty. But this whole we’re-going-to-dial -down-every-emotional-payoff-to-a-mild-5….like….to what end, writers? TO WHAT END?

Just Ramblings of an Old Person
I love Chenford and while I understand the angst for plot and character development …. I just am tired of the love is pain trope. I know they are just realizing their feelings but they both know what they feel. Just fucking do something. Break up with your people you didn’t even care about to ask if they were being protected against Rosalind.
I don’t like the argument of him not being with her because he is her superior officer like a solution doesn’t exist . Can’t one just transfer to another division? I’m sure they want to work together but I’d choose being with the person I love everyday at home rather than at work. And if people talk, I mean he was already married to another officer so what’s the big deal? It’ll hurt her career? Why are you living by the opinions of others? If my promotions are contingent on who I’m with, that’s wild. I understand the notion that there can’t be a conflict of interest. Just eliminate the conflict , have her report to someone else period. Or have them in different shifts. Dude Nolan got a letter of reprimand as a rookie and then a golden ticket and is out here living his best life. He was the king of “it’ll look bad on my record” and is somehow thriving. Must we forget his whole credit score fiasco which not at all his fault (identity theft) he was just a magnet of all things hindering his career. I get the angst of Chen and Bradford. I get they started S1 with Talia warning her about Nolan and dating cops but do we just forget how her storyline ended. Talia’s over developed sense of morality led her to lying on a report about her family and leaving to the ATF. Like I loved her, but her opinion was rooted in hypocrisy and hierarchies of misogyny about relationships and the woman taking the brunt. It’s realistic I know but also incredibly ancient. Lucy is progressive girl tackle the patriarchy .Considering all the show has tried to push about police reform and police community relationships entering the 21st century, which I may think is too Hollywood … you can’t tell me you can’t try to dismantle the patriarchy a bit the way you tackled racism in policing. Why should it reflect bad on Lucy to marry her former TO? Ask yourself this fundamental question, what has she gained from his rank than didn’t come from her hard work? She doesn’t even get promoted without dating him. Her first opportunity to rise is now this UC school. But come on… there would be no conflict of interest. For one we know they’d separate them at work which makes sense. And dude you have an IA dept right you can probably just flag those situations and just establish a protocol. Im not saying go for sleeping with you boss. But he’s a Sargent not Chief. Also like you had a mole in your dept maybe you need to worry more about how that happened. Not to mention Stanton and Erin. Like the ethics of a relationship vs betraying the duty you signed up for are different. And again just make sure they aren’t working in situations where she reports to him.
I’m tired of this idea characters need to suffer to then find happiness and love. For one not all love is pining and angst. Sometimes it can be fully head on and decisive. Speak your truth, use your words, know what you what, you like something say it and go for it, for God’s sake you are police officers. If you are telling me my job is so high risk I might die on the job & I can’t even go home to the person I want out of fear of what others will say …then maybe that job is a one way street to unhappiness. I see Angela and Nyla happy. Why can’t Lucy have that stability? Her love shouldn’t be suffering and pining. This isn’t the Dick Wolf universe of suffering. I’m just saying I get what makes a compelling drama but be more Ted Lasso S1 full of optimism and hope. Be the Abbott Elementary of the procedural cop show world. We don’t always need drama to equate to suffering or John Wick action situations TBH. Character development and plot can develop in the mundane, Especially if you don’t know how many seasons this show will have. Let Tim and Lucy get married and have kids. I’d love to know how a woman like Lucy balances motherhood and her job as a police officer. Give me the cultural differences between Lucy and Tim. She speaks Cantonese right? Give us more depth into her culture, her background. We breezed over Angela being a new mom. Nyla is mom of two and I get we”ll get some arc there but just motherhood and the workforce can be interesting. What about fatherhood and the workforce, the balances of relationships. It’s to me just lazy to default love to pining and angst. It’s so much more. It can be represented in other ways. Take a risk.
On another note, Chris is lovely and all but maybe you could have given her someone that wasn’t an ADA and close to her work as well? Like give her depth, let her go into the world and find a dentist. Lol. I’m just being shady but again stems to the idea Chen could be represented more outside the station. Hell I would have preferred she meet Chris via her parents, some off work situation, just something that shows Lucy outside her job and apartment. Tim makes sense because he is her best friend, the person who saved her, blah blah blah but Chris… my guy did want to lock up a 16 year old without mercy. He may have wanted to save the grand jury folks but my guy works with Del Monte and probably up charges as he needs to. He’s no Wesley.

do you know any good brutalia comics?
I'm not saying any of these are the holy grail when it comes to Talia's portrayal since her character has a long history of writers messing with it, but here's what I got for you.
Batman: Son of the Demon (1987) – This is a one-shot where Bruce actually helps Ra's against a different Cold War–era enemy called Qayin. In this iteration, Bruce and Talia's relationship is consensual and she pretends to have a miscarriage in order to help Bruce with the broader storyline. However, the baby is not Damian and was instead an unknown child that she gave to an orphanage and was adopted by an unknown couple.
Batman: Arkham Unhinged (2012) – In this series, we get flashbacks to Bruce and Talia's relationship as they rekindle an alliance to, for a lack of a better term, save the world. Yes, this involves teaming up with Ra's Al Ghul again. It's one of those recurring necessary evils that Bruce undergoes multiple times in various continuities. It's a companion comic to the Batman: Arkham game and you buy it, it comes with an XBox live code so... do with that what you will, I guess.
Nightwing: Freefall (2008) – Even though she's a multifaceted person with complex relationships with the heroes, she is still a villain, and this Nightwing series explores that side of her. The story mainly focuses on Dick and his relationship with people like Tim, Bruce, and Wally, but we understand how Talia looks from his POV. The vibe is a little different from other batfamily or Nightwing comics, but it's strikes a refreshing balance between the grim world and his bright character. It sorta feels like Spider-Man with an eerie Halloween undertone.
Detective Comics #750 (2000) – Here we see a more tactical side to their relationship rather than a romantic one, since they part ways after the issue ends. Here, they're up against two villains named Whisper and Abbott. There's some back-and-forth capture and escape going on, but what I like is that rather than showing off Talia's fighting capabilities, we see her as a strategist and understand the layers that go into sabotaging a villain's plan.

Rarest of them all! 10 Femslash Recs for February
Rarest of Rarepairs! 10 Femslash Recs for February
Femslash February!
Selection Criteria
These are the only, completed fics/art on AO3 for their pairing in English. Fics are at least 500 words.
No crackfics/crossovers/poly/harem.
No repeat authors.
Motivation to make this rec list
Searching on AO3 is hard outside the juggernaut ships if you don't know the exact pairing you are looking for. A lot of these fics are going to be totally impossible to find because AO3 default search is easier for big ships. I feel this is where rec lists can make a difference.
Like any rec list, this is subjective based on my reading. YMMV.
AO3 Collection for this list
Splendor in the Grass
by MyWitch
Medium - Art
Hot. Hot. Hot. Also beautiful. Best opener for this list! I don't know why the artist thought we needed this but they are right and we totally need this like oxygen.
Rec note - this was created for Daily Deviant. Check that collection if you want hot and kinky!
 Narrow Escape
by pauraque
Pairing - Helena Ravenclaw/Petunia Evans
Unrequited romance! Angst! Helena Ravenclaw is scary/obsessive/really good at observing things. Also she has a type. Tragedy is her type! Really beautiful fic with a chilling atmosphere.
Though Petunia's soul is unscathed and tender, a peculiar aura still clings about her, unseen—perhaps the faintest echo of disaster, or a grim destiny narrowly escaped. As if in some other world, where even phantoms cannot enter, this sweet child might have turned so bitter cold that none could have kissed her without the chill piercing to the roots of their teeth.
Rec note - This fic was written for an event called Rare Pair Shorts Number Game 2021. Check out their collection if you want more!
 Between Worlds
by deslea
Pairing - Ginny/Myrtle
Ginny/Myrtle is one of my favorite femslash pairings of all time. The dynamics are going to be so good with their shared history. It really needs more fic. I love this fic because of the Myrtle POV which is really in character.
 Call it Education
by Woldy
Pairing - Minerva/Griselda
Talk about power couples! This fic has a really memorable opening line!
Minerva suspected she was the only person at Hogwarts who looked forward to exam season.
 An Occasion
by @ladymothwing
Pairing - Minerva/Madam Malkin
I loved this fic because of the Minerva McGonagall descriptions and the pining vibe written with a dry voice. The descriptions are truthful without exaggerating but also really really in love. Also I loved Talia as Madam Malkin's name. It's my new headcanon now.
Of course she had seen her before, Minerva McGonagall, she had been two years below her, but the last time Talia had seen her, she’d been all elbows and knees, too tall to be graceful, her face flecked with red spots as she shouted bloody murder at the person who’d knocked the bludger into her.
 Better Than Writing Lines
by Maxwrite
Pairing - Irma Pince/Hannah Abbott
Classic Teacher/Student. Dirty/hot/wrong. Definitely read the warnings on this one!
Also Maxwrite! <3 Totally deserves everything ever because they wrote the best Percy fics of all time IMO! Subjective! Also ruined Percy fics for me. I love this author so much and read them canon blind.
Rec note - Talking about rarest of rare fics, also check out their Percy/Barty Jr. fic Extraordinary Lengths if you like darkfics. My rec here.
 Beetle Dreams
by @featherxquill
Pairing - Luna/Rita
Hot, hot, sensual, beautiful! Luna finds a beetle. She takes it to her room and begins studying it. At night the beetle transforms but she thinks she is dreaming. Happy ending. Beautiful Luna characterization. The Rita characterization is going to depend on your taste. But this is a brilliant fic with a great take on the Animagus and Mysterious Lover tropes.
This is what she wants, what she needs. A woman with the wisdom of a mother and the touch of a lover. Someone who will listen to her, talk to her and strip her down to her own human skin. And then, naked and bare, they'll become animals together.
 Rákóczi March
by eldritcher
Pairing - Minerva/Bathilda
Rákóczi March is a lyrical and unique fic about growing up and finding out what the world is really like.
This fic is set after Grindelwald's defeat. In a change from canon, he was executed. Bathilda goes to Nurmengard to bury Grindelwald because she is his last relative. Minerva is the Ministry rep who escorts her.
The youthful vibe of Minerva's POV stands out in contrast with the really complicated emotions Bathilda is going through and the horrible cost of war. It was making me think about a child soldiers meta I have read about Harry and his generation. I loved the Minerva characterization in this one. There's a lot of layers in the fic but I probably need to reread it a couple of times to write a better rec.
Lilac was her scent. Brighter than the moon over Alföld was her gaze. And her hands, when they came to hold me, were not weighed by atoning sorrow.
She met me as a lover must, free of care and freely giving.
In blunt and clumsy bard's offering, I cloaked her in hope's march.
Rec note - This author has other beautifully written, brilliant, unique rare pair fics which are the only ones for those pairings on AO3. Some of my favorites are Gyre and Gimble (Draco/Charity), Homily (Delphi/Hermione), My Beamish Boy (Aberforth/Albus), Epic of the Forgotten (Viktor/Voldemort), All the wild summer was in Her Gaze (Minerva/Ollivander) and The Pilgrim Soul in You (Walburga/Snape). If you are into rare rare pairs, definitely check those out and get your mind blown.
 Parting Gift
by kelly_chambliss
Pairing - Minerva McGonagall/Millicent Bagnold
This fic made me think about how much progress has actually happened for LGBT rights. A long way to go. But lots of progress. The characters here have to be secret about their relationships and it's really scary. Lavender marriage vibes.
"What it we got tired of it, Min?" she asked.
"Tired of living together in wedded bliss? Of being with each other?"
Millie gave Minerva's shoulder a little slap. "Of course not, goosey! Tired of the whole business, I mean -- the potion, and the schedules, and seeing Elph naked, and oh. . .just all of it. In a lot of ways, we'd still be hiding, you know. . .just with a lot more complications."
Rec Note - This author has a lot of really rare rare pairs. Triptych (Eileen/Sybill), Ofnadwy (Minerva/Helga), Roses in December (Minerva/Neville), Look Not at The Things (Minerva/Aberforth), The Muggles Have a Word for Them are some of my favorites! If you are into rare rare pairs definitely them check out! They are beautiful fics. <3
  A Cliff in July
by Miss M
Pairing - Marietta/Millicent
A beautiful fic about two characters who made some mistakes. They are worried if people will remember them only because of their mistakes. A really good exploration of their insecurities, vulnerabilities, fears. The perfect fic to close the list with!
Two awkward young witches far away from their world, finding their way down from a seaside cliff in late July, walking close together on the narrow path, so close nobody can see they're holding hands. It's too early to tell, Marietta tells herself as they come into view of the hotel and Millicent presses her hand once more before letting go. It might not last. It might not be anything, after all.
Then again, she thinks it might.
