Would you elaborate on "went is a ghost possessing the body of go"? I am fascinated

there was once a middle english verb, wend, meaning proceed along, who with time faded and dispersed into obscurity, as words do. it now exists mostly in certain restricted expressions such as “wend one’s way,” but its past form lives on, taking shelter in the irregular past conjugation of the verb go.

funny enough, the old english past form of go, the one replaced by went, was eode. if that doesn’t seem very go-ish to you either, that’s because eode itself was a ghost of another, older word, also hiding out in go (gan at the time)!
