Thank you @robobbin for this adorable commission of Mafiafell Sans caring for their OC sick at home. You know I can't live without big scaryboys absolutely melting when their darling is unwell <3
---
“hey sweetcheeks.”
You looked up from your position nestled on the couch, a flash of hot confusion and embarrassment momentarily awakening you from your feverish stupor. That... wasn’t the voice you expected to hear, coming through your front door. You lifted your head up a few inches- movement in inches was all you could manage right now.
... It was Sans. Sans was in your house. He had a nice, pressed red shirt and black pants- your spare keys hooked onto a claw, two plastic bags over one of his big arms, and an unreadable lilt to his shark grin.
“... Sans?” You mumbled, eyes widening into saucers. You felt your cheeks immediately get even hotter.
Your fever hadn’t improved, as you’d hoped it would. In fact, it had only gotten worse as the hours wore on; moving and thinking had grown increasingly impossible. In a total mess, you’d called Papyrus, asking if he could bring over something for you to eat... though you didn’t actually recall what he’d said back to you, most of it just blurring together in your head.
... You’d been expecting Pap. Pap knew you, he'd already seen you weak and gross before. Pap had carried you home from the gym, once, after you made the mistake of trying to keep up with his workout.
You were not anticipating the arrival of his hot brother, whom you had a massive crush on.
Despite feverishly sweating, you pulled the blanket further up over you. You felt embarrassed to be seen like this.
“sorry, i know you were expectin’ boss.” He put both of the plastic bags down onto the coffee table, crouching beside the couch to be closer to your eye level. You twisted your hands in the blanket, his proximity making your heart thump. “he’s swamped with work, so i’m droppin off the emergency goods instead. though i’ll be sure to let him know you missed him.”
“... O-oh.” Your mind was fried. You stared- he looked great. It felt like the longer you knew each other, the better he dressed, it was amazing how his presence could simultaneously make you feel so much worse but also so much better. “N-no, it’s okay. I’m... fine. You’re fine.”
He chuckled, musically, eyelights warm. His voice felt good in your painful chest. “i’m fine?”
“N-not like... fine as in hot. Fine as in okay.” Your cheeks were just on fire at this point. The fever had removed any and all barriers between your head and your mouth, so words just waterfalled out. “Not that you’re not hot. You are. You’re very hot. You.. uh,”
... Shit. Again, that little edge to his smile. You wanted to sink between the couch cushions and die.
Rather than make fun of you, Sans just gently reached over you, placing a cold compress against your forehead. He was so close you could smell him.
“you’re burning up. and ya look terrible. i’m gonna stay over and watch you.”
"N-no-!!" You blurted, nearly sitting up. The guy you liked, staying and seeing you completely out of it, at your absolute worst? No???
He grinned. "sorry, pet. not gettin' rid of me until your fever goes down."
... You covered your face with both hands. This was mortifying. Were you glad he was here? Absolutely. You didn't want to be alone right now, and his insistence on staying despite your protests felt good. But you still wanted to die.
“pap really went nuts with the food when he found out you were unwell. y’know he’s got a list of all your allergies? let’s see...” You could hear him start unpacking the bags, placing things onto the table. “some funky soup. saltines, popsicles, iced coconut water. ginger candy... whole bunch of herbal teabags. you ever had sea tea?”
You kept one hand on your face, gesturing randomly with the other. “Soup. Soup please.”
“soup comin’ right up, gorgeous.”
You tried to say thank you, but just a weak grumble came out, the room was spinning again. You heard him move into the kitchen... so you just let yourself sink back into the couch, comforted by another person’s presence.
...
You didn’t know how much time passed, he eventually returned. You could smell something nice.
"hey. can ya sit up a lil, for me?'
... You didn’t really respond to his query. Curled in blankets like a feverish squirrel, you merely made a sound in the back of your throat to acknowledge him. The fever was getting worse.
... Big hands, on your body. There was movement... Sans shifted you, everything spun. You were vaguely aware of him sitting you up, supporting you with one big hand- you did your best to just watch his face, focus on his lovely red eyelights.
"c'mon. soup’s ready. here comes the airplane."
... Despite the state of you, that made you giggle. And judging by the smile that filled your wobbling vision... he liked the sound.
///---///
...
... He was probably enjoying himself a little too much.
Sans shifted his legs into a slightly comfier position from his spot in front of the couch. This definitely wasn’t what he thought he’d be doing today. He’d been planning on going out for a drink, maybe crossing some names off a list while his blood was up- the usual stupidity he filled his free time with.
... Then he got Pap’s call about you. And instantly, it had felt like nothing else in the world mattered.
Now, here he was; in his crush’s house, spoon-feeding her warm soup, trying to keep a nonchalant face while wrestling with an (emotional) noisy Soul.
... i haven’t felt like this in a long time.
You were so cute. His nasal ride wrinkled, and he pinched the soup spoon a bit tighter, restraining the urge to grab your cheek- he felt bad for not being able to stop thinking about how cute you looked, when you were so unwell. But he couldn’t help it. All snuggled up in blankets, hair frizzy and unkempt, glasses askew, flushed and warm... you had a twinkly, glazed look to your eyes, not too dissimilar from the look people got when they were drunk. He’d been fighting the urge to ruffle your hair this whole time.
...
Sans bit his tongue. This was mundane, compared to his normal life. Some might even consider it a chore. But... he hadn’t felt this nice in so long. He felt... useful. Wanted.
When was the last time someone had been openly, willingly, weak around him? When was the last time someone was in a state of fragility, and wanted him nearby?
Mushy feelings filled his chest. Soft. Overprotective. He was hyper-aware of how sick you were and he didn’t want to leave your side, not even for a second, not even to go home. Even just acknowledging those emotions made colour rise to his cheekbones... he hadn't felt anything like this level of protectiveness since Pap was just a babybones.
... But damn... it felt good to be needed.
...
Warm fingers curled around his hand.
He very nearly jumped out of his fucking seat at the sensation- he fumbled the soup spoon, mumbling out a little ‘shit’ as he broke out of his thoughts, turning to look at you.
... Your tiny hand was wrapped around two of his phalanges. Sparkly eyes peered up at him.
fuck. His Soul thudded in his throat. don’t look away from me.
"... h-hey. c'mon." His voice was shaky. "that ain't fair."
"Huh?" Came your bleary reply. so fucking cute. stop it.
"you've stolen my hand, doll."
... You looked to his captured hand, slowly. Like you only just realised you had it.
...
"... Mine now." You mumbled.
...
He tried to muster up a quick joke, like always. Tried to come up with a sharp-witted response. Something with swagger, something with a flirtatious edge, something with confidence that would show you how cool and collected he was.
...
Nothing came out of his mouth. It was like trying to start an empty car.
“... o-oh.”
...
"... You're great." You said, eyes fluttering closed.
"... huh?"
"Great guy. Handsome guy. Nice to me." It didn't sound like you intended those thoughts to be said out loud. He felt his eyelights flare- his Soul was thumping against his ribs.
Words banged at his tongue, but the only sound he managed to get out was a tiny shaking hum of affirmation.
You drew his hand up toward your face, he absolutely had the strength to stop you but he felt like he’d been flashbanged. All he could do was watch... as turned on your side to get cosy, pulled up his hand to your face... and happily nuzzled the back of it.
“My big guy.” You murmured.
...
Just like that, you were asleep.
...
Sans used his free hand to cover his face. His whole skull was carmine red, glowing like a campfire. It made him look almost as feverish as you.
...
i never want to leave.

Could I have the framer with Sebastian in a rainy day? Pleaseee
Y’all tryna make me cry?? I love asks like this,, they’re so cute I can’t.
But I gotchu!!!
I’m just gonna assume they’re married here, but I can do one with them dating if you want!
Also sorry this is so late, I’ve been swamped with schoolwork lately. Should be back on a regular schedule soon!
Sebastian and the Farmer on a Rainy Day
When you woke up, it had been raining. Absolutely pouring. You could ever hear claps of thunder every few seconds. Your first thought was about the trees and the crop. Not to mention the animals, too.
Slowly, you sit up, glancing around the room. Huh, that’s weird. Sebastian wasn’t in bed with you. It takes an embarrassingly long time of wondering where he could be on a rainy day at the crack of dawn before it hits you.
Sebastian loves rainy weather. He loves walking around in storms, blasting music in his headphones and ignoring the world. You smile to yourself, the thought of him filling your heart with love.
Eventually you clamber out of bed, changing into your normal outfit, now with a raincoat and matching rain boots. You noticed Sebastian’s rain boots (yellow ones with frog faces) were gone as well, so he’s obviously outside somewhere. You figured you could find him later. Checking on the animals is more urgent. Your chickens always got scared during storms.
After all the chores on the farm are done, you walk towards the beach, where you suspect he’s at. Sebastian was allowed to be independent, obviously. You made sure to let him know that you don’t need to know where he is every second of the day. He has as much free time as he wants, even though a lot of it is spent inside with you or hanging out with Sam and Abigail. Marriage didn’t change a thing about their friendship.
Once you arrive at the docks, you walk over, spotting your husband sitting down, legs dangling over the edge. His boots are on, waves occasionally crashing in to them, the water not reaching very far. He feels rather than hears you call him, the boards underneath him vibrating as you walk over.
He perks up, taking out his headphones. You can hear music blaring through them, despite being a few feet away. You smile as you take a seat next to him, placing a kiss on his cheek.
“Morning, Seb,” you say happily, smiling at him. He wraps his arms around you, despite both of you being soaking wet, and mumbling a soft “good morning” back to you.
“How long have you been out here for?” You asked, after waiting a pause. He thinks for a minute, staring off into the sea. You only began understanding how pretty it was when you were out here with him the first time. Or maybe you just realized that you associate the sea with Sebastian, and that was what made it so beautiful.
“Couple hours. I stopped at Sam’s to say hi. Well, I wasn’t allowed in. Jodi just cleaned the floors and she didn’t want any mud here.”
“I swear she says that everytime I walk in. Almost like she doesn’t like us.” Sebastian laughs at your comment, leaning back with an arm loosely around you.
“I dunno, I wouldn’t be too happy if you marched in with your muddy boots if I had just cleaned the floor-“
“Since when do you clean the floors?” You ask, nudging his shoulder playfully.
“I do! You just get dirt all over!” Sebastian’s face flushes as he turns away, clearly embarrassed. He’s so cute when he’s like this.
“I know,” you say, wrapping your arms around him.
Sebastian turns to you after a moment, leaning in to place a kiss on your lips. He rarely takes the initiative. When he does, you almost always feel your heart jump out of its chest.
“I love you.” He mumbles, arms wound around your waist.
“I love you too,” you reply, a smile on your face to match his.
You’re both soaking wet with mud on your boots and water dripping down your face, but there’s no where else you would rather be. You know that you’ll probably end up with a cold after, but at least you and Seb will be sniffly together. It’s romantic, in a way. Probably.

“Where are we going, Kacchan?” Izuku looked over at his boyfriend who had his eyes glued to the road. It was clear he was ignoring him, but he had a slight smile pulling at the corner of his lips. It was late at night, maybe three in the morning and they were driving down a dirt road in the country. There was nothing but fields on either side of them and there wasn’t another person for miles. This time in the summer the countryside was beautiful, with all of the harvest in full bloom. It wasn't often that he got to come out here, but there was no one he’d rather go with than Bakugou. They rode in silence with only the slight buzz of cicadas singing sweetly and the steady sound of the engine humming beneath them. It was somehow peaceful and serene, but Izuku was still confused about what they were doing.
Earlier that night Bakugou had come into their room and told him to pack up a blanket and meet him in the car. His boyfriend had packed up his computer, some snacks and a bottle of wine before dragging him out of their apartment. The greenette had wanted an explanation, but he was only met with silence. The only thing that he had managed to pull out of the blond was that they were going somewhere special, whatever that meant. Now they had been on the road for nearly 20 minutes and were deep into the night. It was always a nice break to leave the bustle of the city. Without all the bright lights and screaming of cars, it was like you could finally breathe.
Finally Bakugou seemed to see something off the road and turned off into one of the open fields of grass. In the dirt, the car bumped around roughly, jolting Izuku in his seat as they descended deeper into the sea of green. Once they were far enough that they could no longer see the trail they had come from Bakugou pulled the car to a stop.
“We’re here.” He said opening the car door and pulling out all of the accessories he had brought. “Do you have the blanket?”
Also stepping out of the vehicle, Izuku handed over a quilt he had grabbed from the living room closet. Bakugou offered a small rare smile, that plastered a blush over the others face. He stayed standing by the hood as he watched his boyfriend spread the blanket down in the grass and sit down. He gestured for Izuku to sit with him as he opened his computer. The mood was thick in the air and the greenette laid against Bakugou’s chest, enjoying being in his love’s company. They were both busy and rarely got to spend time like this just the two of them.
“Are you finally going to tell me what we're doing all the way out here Kacchan?” He sighed contently as he watched the other pull up Netflix on his computer.
“We’ve both been swamped with work, so I thought we could get away for one night and just have a glass of wine together.” He put his arm sound Izuku pulling him closer burying his face in his hair. He had showered shortly before they left, so the green curls were still slightly wet and smelled like a forest.
“And we couldn’t have just done that at home?” He chuckled, feeling Bakugou holding him tightly. He wasn’t sure what they had planned for the night, but he certainly hoped that he didn’t plan on getting it on in the middle of a field.
“You got a problem with it nerd?” Bakugou used his old nickname, but there was no malice behind the words. The way we said it was almost like a purr as he began to plant soft kisses along his jawline. They both began to lightly laugh, Izuku a soft giggle and Bakugou a deep chuckle. It was the best feeling in the world; just being held in each other's arms.
Just the two of them sitting alone, the only light was from the stars in the sky. Out away from the blinding streetlight and widows of Tokyo, you would see so many of the sparkling diamonds twinking above them. At that moment it was like the whole universe was looking down on them. The whole sky was a light with a million stars, only for them.
Izuku slowly turned around and planted a soft kiss on the others lips, lingering a little longer than necessary before pulling away. He smiled sweetly at the way his face flared red. Bakugou was harsh and rough with his love so small shows of affection always flustered him. Just as he was about to lean in for another kiss, the alarm on the blonds phone went off. They both looked over and Bakugou quickly snatched it and clicked off the sound. He pulled Izuku off from his lap and stood up.
“I need you to do something for me.” He glanced over towards their car. “Can you get onto the roof?”
“What?” Izuku asked, thinking he was joking. Bakugou looked so stern he had to try to stifle a laugh. When he was given a look that made it clear he was being serious, he turned around and made his way over to the car. He opened the Drivers side door and stepped onto the seat, before pushing himself up onto the roof of the car. Bakugou followed suit, and soon they were both sitting on top of the vehicle. Even though they were only a little higher, the whole field spread out in front of them. As Izuku was busy gawking at the beautiful landscape, Bakugou had his eye on something much greater. He lightly tapped the other on the shoulder, taking his hand as he stared into the night sky.
“Look up baby.” Izuku turned to his boyfriend before letting his gaze drift to the clouds above. When he found himself staring at a beautiful sight, his eyes widened in amazement.
Spread out before them, was a stunning array of light, like a painting in the night sky. Flashes of fire and radiance made the whole sky glow a million colors. A meteors shower in summer. There were hundreds of bits of rock raining down and shaping the world around them. A small gasp Escaped Izuku’s lips, and he squeezed tightly on Bakugou’s hand.
“Oh my god. Did you know this was going to happen?!” He felt his whole body tingle with a sense of pure bliss. He could roughly see the other nodding but couldn’t bring himself to pull his eyes away from the show before them. Suddenly he felt himself being pulled down, and landed lightly on Bakugou’s chest. Laying on the roof, they both stared up in awe at the magic that they were witnessing before them. Out of everyone in the world, it was just the two of them sharing this moment together.
Bakugou put his arms around Izuku and Began to rub slow circles along his back. They intertwined their legs and cuddled closer to one another till they could feel their breaths hitting one anothers face. When their eyes met, they could see the sparks of the meteors reflected back at them and time seemed to stop. To Bakugou, those two glowing green orbs were truly the only thing he would ever need. Slowly they both leaned in, letting their lips collide. It was sloppy, but in sink as they danced together. Their breaths mixed, Izuku could feel Bakugou’s tongue trailing over his lips. He opened his lips in a gasp, letting both of their mouths explore each other freely. He slowly ran his hands up and down Bakugou’s chest, feeling his muscles through his thin T-shirt. Being held so close and being kissed passionately by the man he loved. Izuku was in pure bliss.
Balugou was ready to devour the other right there, but he thought he could at least wait until they were back at home. As soon as Izuku hit the bed, he would make sure to ravage him. For now, he pulled away leaving a string of saliva in between them as they both panted. They once again gazed into one another's eyes, a sight far more beautiful than the shower above them, before Bakugou sat up.
“Let's get out of here.” He said looking down at Izuku. The other nodded his head and slid off the roof, gathering the blanket in one hand, and opening the car door with the other.
Once they were packed back into the car, Bakugou pulled out of the field and back onto the road. He slowly turned the radio on and watched as Izuku’s face lit up. Before He Cheats was one of his all time favorite songs.
“Kacchan open the sunroof!” When he complied, Izuku slowly stood up, making sure not to kick Bakugou, and poked his head out of the top of the car. The wind whipped against his face, and he couldn’t help but smile and at the sound of the music blaring while the midnight air whistled in his ears. He fully pushed himself up, so that his entire torso was above the car and he threw his hands back, letting the breeze push his hair out from his face. There was no one in ears distance so he began to sing his heart out to the stars.
“I Dug My Key Into The Side Of His Pretty Souped Up Four Wheel Drive!” His words were lost in the wind, but he couldn’t care. He felt like he might cry with how perfect everything seemed. The whole world seemed so bright at that moment.
Below him in the car Bakugou was feeling the same. The slight of his Amazing boyfriend yelling to no one but him and the dirt road, and the kiss they had shared. How had he possibly gotten so lucky.

Sooo, I had been looking for a good challenge for the sims, but didn't find one about greek goddesses. So I decided to make one, Enjoy!😊
The greek goddess challenge is a 10 generation challenge. Every gen represents a different acient greek goddess. I stuck to the mythology with some, and with some I just thought some stuff up. I would like to say that this challenge is with goddesses, so treat your sims with a little respect and don't forget that they're goddesses so they can get pregnant by anyone (man/woman/nonbinary) if you want them to. I do recommend using mccc to control the gender and amount of babies :) have fun!
Gen 1: Gaia/Rhea
Mother nature. You're a very goodnatured woman who wants best for your children. Unfortunately, you don't have such a good taste in love. You constantly fall in love with the wrong people. You love nature in all it's glory and you are very zen. You love doing yoga and teaching your kids everything you know.
• Traits: Loves the outdoors, good, musiclover
• Aspiration: big happy family
• Kids: Aphrodite, Zeus, Hestia (goddess of fire), Eos (godess of dawn), Hemera (godess of the day), Apollo (god sun and music) (you can skip some if you like)

You like to party and are not ashamed of your body, you love yourself and are all about positivity. You are also a super passionate woman, which causes you to fall in love quickly. But sadly also out, as you get bored with a lot of people. Until you meet that one person. You would do anything to be with that person. The only problem is that you're already in an relationship... Well at least you have inspiration for your next romance novel.

He has all these affairs and illigemate children all over the world, and altough you try and tell yourself that it doesn't matter, you get jealous and hurt. You've heard it is a beautiful place and you want to do some good for the world because your mother caused so much harm. And it doesn't disappoint. The Tsarevna Frog
@superkingofpriderock @sunlit-music @mademoiselle-princesse @amalthea9 @princesssarisa @astrangechoiceoffavourites
(Russian Tale)
In old, old Russian tsarstvo, I do not know when, there lived a sovereign prince with the princess his wife. They had three sons, all of them young, and such brave fellows that no pen could describe them. The youngest had the name of Ivan Tsarevitch.
One day their father said to his sons: ''My dear boys, take each of you an arrow, draw your strong bow and let your arrow fly; in whatever court it falls, in that court there will be a wife for you."
The arrow of the oldest Tsarevitch fell on a boyar-house just in front of the terem where women live; the arrow of the second Tsarevitch flew to the red porch of a rich merchant, and on the porch there stood a sweet girl, the merchant's daughter. The youngest, the brave Tsarevitch Ivan, had the ill luck to send his arrow into the midst of a swamp, where it was caught by a croaking frog.
Ivan Tsarevitch came to his father: "How can I marry the frog?" complained the son. "Is she my equal? Certainly she is not."
"Never mind, "replied his father. "You have to marry the frog, for such is evidently your destiny."
Thus the brothers were married: the oldest to a young boyarishnia, a nobleman's child; the second to the merchant's beautiful daughter, and the youngest, Tsarevitch Ivan, to a croaking frog.
After a while the sovereign prince called his three sons and said to them: "Have each of your wives bake a loaf of bread by tomorrow morning."
Ivan returned home. There was no smile on his face, and his brow was clouded.
"C-r-o-a-k! C-r-o-a-k! Dear husband of mine, Tsarevitch Ivan, why so sad?" gently asked the frog. ''Was there anything disagreeable in the palace?"
"Disagreeable indeed," answered Ivan Tsarevitch; "the Tsar, my father, wants you to bake a loaf of white bread by tomorrow."
"Do not worry, Tsarevitch. Go to bed; the morning hour is a better adviser than the dark evening."
The Tsarevitch, taking his wife's advice, went to sleep. Then the frog threw off her frog skin and turned into a beautiful, sweet girl, Vassilissa by name. She now stepped out on the porch and called aloud: "Nurses and waitresses, come to me at once and prepare a loaf of white bread for tomorrow morning, a loaf exactly like those I used to eat in my royal father's palace."
In the morning Tsarevitch Ivan awoke with the crowing cocks, and you know the cocks and chickens are never late.
Yet the loaf was already made, and so fine it was that nobody could even describe it, for only in fairyland one finds such marvelous loaves. It was adorned all about with pretty figures, with towns and fortresses on each side, and within it was white as snow and light as a feather.
The Tsar father was pleased and the Tsarevitch received his special thanks.
"Now there is another task," said the Tsar smilingly. "Have each of your wives weave a rug by tomorrow."
Tsarevitch Ivan came back to his home. There was no smile on his face and his brow was clouded.
"C-r-o-a-k! C-r-o-a-k! Dear Tsarevitch Ivan, my husband and master, why so troubled again? Was not father pleased?"
''How can I be otherwise? The Tsar, my father, has ordered a rug by tomorrow."
"Do not worry, Tsarevitch. Go to bed; go to sleep. The morning hour will bring help."
Again the frog turned into Vassilissa, the wise maiden, and again she called aloud: "Dear nurses and faithful waitresses, come to me for new work. Weave a silk rug like the one I used to sit upon in the palace of the king, my father."
Once said, quickly done. When the cocks began their early "cock-a-doodle-doo," Tsarevitch Ivan awoke, and lo! there lay the most beautiful silk rug before him, a rug that no one could begin to describe. Threads of silver and gold were interwoven among bright-colored silken ones, and the rug was too beautiful for anything but to admire.
The Tsar father was pleased, thanked his son Ivan, and issued a new order. He now wished to see the three wives of his handsome sons, and they were to present their brides on the next day.
The Tsarevitch Ivan returned home. Cloudy was his brow, more cloudy than before.
"C-r-o-a-k! C-r-o-a-k! Tsarevitch, my dear husband and master, why so sad ? Hast thou heard anything unpleasant at the palace?"
"Unpleasant enough, indeed! My father, the Tsar, ordered all of us to present our wives to him. Now tell me, how could I dare go with thee?"
"It is not so bad after all, and could be much worse," answered the frog, gently croaking. "Thou shalt go alone and I will follow thee. When thou hearest a noise, a great noise, do not be afraid; simply say: 'There is my miserable froggy coming in her miserable box.'"
The two elder brothers arrived first with their wives, beautiful, bright, and cheerful, and dressed in rich garments. Both the happy bridegrooms made fun of the Tsarevitch Ivan.
"Why alone, brother?" they laughingly said to him. "Why didst thou not bring thy wife along with thee? Was there no rag to cover her? Where couldst thou have gotten such a beauty? We are ready to wager that in all the swamps in the dominion of our father it would be hard to find another one like her." And they laughed and laughed.
Lo! what a noise! The palace trembled, the guests were all frightened. Tsarevitch Ivan alone remained quiet and said: ''No danger; it is my froggy coming in her box."
To the red porch came flying a golden carriage drawn by six splendid white horses, and Vassilissa, beautiful beyond all description, gently reached her hand to her husband. He led her with him to the heavy oak tables, which were covered with snow-white linen and loaded with many wonderful dishes such as are known and eaten only in the land of fairies and never anywhere else. The guests were eating and chatting gaily.
Vassilissa drank some wine, and what was left in the tumbler she poured into her left sleeve. She ate some of the fried swan, and the bones she threw into her right sleeve. The wives of the two elder brothers watched her and did exactly the same.
When the long, hearty dinner was over, the guests began dancing and singing. The beautiful Vassilissa came forward, as bright as a star, bowed to her sovereign, bowed to the honorable guests and danced with her husband, the happy Tsarevitch Ivan.
While dancing, Vassilissa waved her left sleeve and a pretty lake appeared in the midst of the hall and cooled the air. She waved her right sleeve and white swans swam on the water. The Tsar, the guests, the servants, even the gray cat sitting in the corner, all were amazed and wondered at the beautiful Vassilissa. Her two sisters-in-law alone envied her. When their turn came to dance, they also waved their left sleeves as Vassilissa had done, and, oh, wonder! they sprinkled wine all around. They waved their right sleeves, and instead of swans the bones flew in the face of the Tsar father. The Tsar grew very angry and bade them leave the palace. In the meantime Ivan Tsarevitch watched a moment to slip away unseen. He ran home, found the frog skin, and burned it in the fire.
Vassilissa, when she came back, searched for the skin, and when she could not find it her beautiful face grew sad and her bright eyes filled with tears.
She said to Tsarevitch Ivan, her husband: ''Oh, dear Tsarevitch, what hast thou done? There was but a short time left for me to wear the ugly frog skin. The moment was near when we could have been happy together forever. Now I must bid thee goodbye. Look for me in a faraway country to which no one knows the roads, at the palace of Kostshei the Deathless;" and Vassilissa turned into a white swan and flew away through the window.
Tsarevitch Ivan wept bitterly. Then he prayed to the almighty God, and making the sign of the cross northward, southward, eastward, and westward, he went on a mysterious journey.
No one knows how long his journey was, but one day he met an old, old man. He bowed to the old man, who said: "Good-day, brave fellow. What art thou searching for, and whither art thou going?"
Tsarevitch Ivan answered sincerely, telling all about his misfortune without hiding anything.
''And why didst thou burn the frog skin? It was wrong to do so. Listen now to me. Vassilissa was born wiser than her own father, and as he envied his daughter's wisdom he condemned her to be a frog for three long years. But I pity thee and want to help thee. Here is a magic ball. In whatever direction this ball rolls, follow without fear."
Ivan Tsarevitch thanked the good old man, and followed his new guide, the ball. Long, very long, was his road. One day in a wide, flowery field he met a bear, a big Russian bear. Ivan Tsarevitch took his bow and was ready to shoot the bear.
"Do not kill me, kind Tsarevitch," said the bear. "Who knows but that I maybe useful to thee?" And Ivan did not shoot the bear.
Above in the sunny air there flew a duck, a lovely white duck. Again the Tsarevitch drew his bow to shoot it. But the duck said to him: "Do not kill me, good Tsarevitch. I certainly shall be useful to thee some day."
And this time he obeyed the command of the duck and passed by. Continuing his way he saw a blinking hare. The Tsarevitch prepared an arrow to shoot it, but the gray, blinking hare said: "Do not kill me, brave Tsarevitch. I shall prove myself grateful to thee in a very short time."
The Tsarevitch did not shoot the hare, but passed by. He walked farther and farther after the rolling ball, and came to the deep blue sea. On the sand there lay a fish. I do not remember the name of the fish, but it was a big fish, almost dying on the dry sand.
" O Tsarevitch Ivan!" prayed the fish, "have mercy upon me and push me back into the cool sea."
The Tsarevitch did so, and walked along the shore. The ball, rolling all the time, brought Ivan to a hut, a queer, tiny hut standing on tiny hen's feet.
"Izboushka! Izboushka!" -- for so in Russia do they name small huts -- "Izboushka, I want thee to turn thy front to me," cried Ivan, and lo! the tiny hut turned its front at once. Ivan stepped in and saw a witch, one of the ugliest witches he could imagine.
"Ho! Ivan Tsarevitch! What brings thee here?" was his greeting from the witch.
"O, thou old mischief!" shouted Ivan with anger. "Is it the way in holy Russia to ask questions before the tired guest gets something to eat, something to drink, and some hot water to wash the dust off?"
Baba Yaga, the witch, gave the Tsarevitch plenty to eat and drink, besides hot water to wash the dust off. Tsarevitch Ivan felt refreshed. Soon he became talkative, and related the wonderful story of his marriage. He told how he had lost his dear wife, and that his only desire was to find her.
"I know all about it," answered the witch. "She is now at the palace of Kostshei the Deathless, and thou must understand that Kostshei is terrible. He watches her day and night and no one can ever conquer him. His death depends on a magic needle. That needle is within a hare; that hare is within a large trunk; that trunk is hidden in the branches of an old oak tree; and that oak tree is watched by Kostshei as closely as Vassilissa herself, which means closer than any treasure he has."
Then the witch told Ivan Tsarevitch how and where to find the oak tree. Ivan hastily went to the place. But when he perceived the oak tree he was much discouraged, not knowing what to do or how to begin the work. Lo and behold! that old acquaintance of his, the Russian bear, came running along, approached the tree, uprooted it, and the trunk fell and broke. A hare jumped out of the trunk and began to run fast; but another hare, Ivan's friend, came running after, caught it and tore it to pieces. Out of the hare there flew a duck, a gray one which flew very high and was almost invisible, but the beautiful white duck followed the bird and struck its gray enemy, which lost an egg. That egg fell into the deep sea. Ivan meanwhile was anxiously watching his faithful friends helping him. But when the egg disappeared in the blue waters he could not help weeping. All of a sudden a big fish came swimming up, the same fish he had saved, and brought the egg in his mouth. How happy Ivan was when he took it! He broke it and found the needle inside, the magic needle upon which everything depended.
At the same moment Kostshei lost his strength and power forever. Ivan Tsarevitch entered his vast dominions, killed him with the magic needle, and in one of the palaces found his own dear wife, his beautiful Vassilissa. He took her home and they were very happy ever after.

Loki x Reader: October 16 - Offering
man I dn’t know
-
You pushed off from the dock with the long rod, the skiff easily cutting through the water. Standing firmly on the back of the boat you made your way through the misty lake. Seaweed and algae grew high around you, dotting the surface and coloring the water a deep green in many areas. The whole place held a vaguely grey color, your clothes quickly soaked through.
You steered the skiff with ease, the rod-like paddle digging deep into the mud and propelling you out into open water until finally the ground gave way and you arrived at open sea.
Bursting forth from the reeds and brush, you looked out at the water, the fog was no less thick out here but you knew you would not be alone for long, if you even were alone now.
You stepped down from your perch, pulling up the long paddle and set it in the boat, sitting down and catching your breath. The humid air was slick on your lungs.
A short distance away, a small head poked out of the water. Black hair dripping with saltwater and gazing at you curiously through bright green eyes, face half submerged, appeared something seemingly as a person.
You smiled, raising your hand in greeting as you pulled your thick rubber boots off and set them down beside you, removing your socks and tucking them in the boots carefully. Looking for a low hanging branch, you tossed your rope lasso to it and managed to secure your skiff, making sure it wouldn't float away.
The man, for he was a man, moved closer, his head rising further out of the water. You glanced over your shoulder as his face became more visible. With a chuckle, you shook your head as you continued to secure your skiff. His head was fully above water, tall sharp cheek bones, a tall pale forehead, thin nose, thin lips and a sharp angular jaw.
“Well hello.” You finally said, turning around and breaking the silence. “Are you going to greet me?”
“It is not usual to speak in this tongue.” The man admitted.
“And yet you do it for me.”
A smile half quirked at the corner of his mouth, “Yes.”
You crossed to the edge of the skiff and sank down, rolling up your pantaloons and sat slipped your feet in the water. Kicking them gently, you looked at him as he gazed at your feet intently.
“How's home?” You asked.
He looked away with a sigh.
“That bad?” Even though he seemed unused to using your language, he had mastered it artfully and his voice was deep and articulate, musical to your ears. You imagined him writing poetry like the bards that visited your village.
“I'm not like the other, what do you call them?”
“Merfolk.”
He chuckled, leaning back in the water and flipping up his smooth black tail, shark-like at the base. For indeed, he seemed to have the upper half of a human and the lower half of some sort of fish like creature, though not scaly, perhaps a dolphin or an orca. He lowered his tail back in the water and raised his vaguely clawed hands with fins on the wrists, further able to propel him through water and picked idly at his claws.
“Loki...” You said slowly, a chill going down your spine at the name. It was strange and exotic, you rarely let yourself say it, let alone think it. Honestly, the fact that you were even talking to a merman was still hard to fathom.
Loki looked up at you, staring at you intently.
You swallowed hard, “I was wondering, what if, what if I swam with you today?”
A slow grin spread across his face, “You trust me to be in the water with me? I know the stories your people tell about us.”
You bit your lip and nodded, “An offering of good faith. We've known each other for so long now, I've been visiting you for so many days. I think it's fair.”
Loki chuckled, “Yes you have seen my tail and seen that my lower body is not a skeleton, ready to carry your corpse to sea.”
You blanched as you turned away, “Just don't look, I still don't want you to watch me undress, it's not proper for a gentleman to watch a lady change.” You tried to shake the image of a the handsome man with skeletal legs waiting to drag you down to the depths.
Slowly you lowered your pantaloons, leaving on a pair of long white swim shorts. Then you undid your bulky coat and slipped off your large shirt underneath, all more function than fashion. Underneath that you wore a white swim top keeping you modest, though quite a bit of skin and much of your stomach was now exposed.
You turned back around. “Very well.” You crossed your hands over your chest and stared down at him.
Loki uncovered his eyes from his clawed hands and peeked up at you. Slowly he lowered his hands and stared mouth slightly agape. “I was beginning to think those garments you wore were a part of you.”
“Surely you've seen other people in less clothes?”
“I know what my people look like, but not humans.” His gaze trailed up and down your legs, spending a long time looking at the apex of your thighs before trailing back to your knees. Loki swam around the skiff and stared at you from other angles.
“You're making me feel self conscious!” You squeaked, a deep blush spreading across your body.
Loki laughed softly, “That was not my intention.”
“Fine, just, don't eat me.” You sat down on the edge once more, and slowly, very slowly, sank into the water.
To your surprise, the water was comfortably warm. You expected to have your teeth chattering instantly but you found that you were reasonably comfortable.
Loki swam over next to you, a respectful distance away and waited, looking at you expectantly. “So?”
“This is nice.” You said, kicking your legs a bit to stay afloat and waving your hands in slow gentle circles.
“And have I not eaten you?”
“... No.”
Loki nodded curtly.
“I'm sorry for my assumptions.”
“Good.” He crossed his arms, “Beside, your people hunt my people far more because of your nasty tales and as sport than we ever could, and your nets tangling us up.”
“I had never realized...” Your face softened as you reached your hand out to him.
“It matters not, you are not to blame.” Loki looked away forlornly. There was a long silence between the two of you, both of you just treading water.
Suddenly Loki seemed to remember something.
“Oh! I made this for you!” Loki reached down to his waist and tugged at a string of pearls, pulling it up and handing it to you. “You can hang it in your window and perhaps it will make noise? I have seen them on your shipwrecks around lady's necks, perhaps you can put it around your neck?”
Your mouth fell open as you stared at the size and quality of the pearls, this would be worth a fortune if you sold it. “Loki... I can't, this... surely your people could receive an equal pay for this?”
Loki raised his eyebrow, “What would we do with human currency? After all, they think we eat them and they try and kill us. Sell it if you don't want it around your neck, use it to get whatever you need. I've never really found pearls to be that pretty, I found the green rocks more appealing but I couldn't collect enough to make one and I don't know how to set them in gold. Also sea glass is so abundant I didn't think that really counted as a thoughtful gift.”
You swam forward and hugged him, holding the pearls in your hand and burying your face in his shoulder. “Thank you, it's wonderful. I don't think I'm good enough for such fancy jewelry so I'll keep one pearl to honor you and the rest to feed and house myself.”
Loki's cheeks flushed at your contact, he slowly reached up and hugged you back. His clawlike hands stroking along your skin and sliding into the hug.
For a moment you made to pull away but he seemed fascinated by your touch. Loki held you against him, his tail entwined around your legs, the fin brushing between your calves and sliding down to your feet. With his face he nuzzled slightly against your cheek, breathing you in, as though he could get some scent other than the salty sea air or the muggy swamp. With one free hand he slid his hand down your side, hand brushing against your stomach and tentatively feeling at your skin while the other slid up into your hair, feeling at your scalp.
You gasped and struggled to unentwine yourself, “Alright, I think, I think that's enough.”
Loki blinked at you, his eyes dark green and dilated. “Are all humans alike?”
“We have similar bits and bobs generally. But there's differences.”
Loki nodded thoughtfully, “I like your bits and bobs.” He grinned.
“What about merfolk, are you all alike?”
“Generally, but as you say, other than a few differences our, bits and bobs, tend to be similar.”
You felt your voice catch in your throat, as you nodded back, “I like your bits and bobs too.” You flushed. Turning and swimming back to the skiff you scrabbled up, water dripping from you and scrabbled to redress. “See you tomorrow, same time, yea?”

Monster AU Idea that I don’t know what to do with
Literally what the title says. Idk what to do with this, but its in my head and so i need to write it down and share it before my brain explodes. Talk about it or ask about it; whatever you want. As long as I know about it as it is still my idea, go nuts.
@ladyedwina @sparrowofsong
Warning: Does involve murder, being captured, lots of depressed Roman because I’m mean to him for no reason and it makes me sad, gory removal of fingers (not detailed but it is there), suicide mention, me swearing a lot, stabbing(not detailed), hints of Roceit; Intrulogical and qpr Pattmile
Spider Monster Who-Realises-That-His-Race-Sucks Virgil
Born like this. Was raised to be alone but he likes being around others to feel safe, so it makes him a little awkward and even anxious around others.
Hates the rest of his kind because he’s the only one who doesn’t want to eat people. So now they all wanna kill him.
He can retract his extra legs but it leaves small bumps in his back, so he likes to wear his over-sized hoodie to help hide them.
Janus saved him from one of his own kind. Travelled with him and Logan before getting separated by Monster Hunters and running into a lonely wolf-Patton.
Is now Patton’s spider child, despite the fact that said father figure is afraid of spiders. And that Virgil is technically older then him. He does try to look past the ‘too-many-eyes’ and ‘long, hairy legs’ thing; which Virgil appreciates.
The only one of the group that knows how mobiles work and he finds it funny as fuck.
Werewolf Underdog (ha) Patton
Runt of the litter.
Can shift between a humany appearance, an actual grey-brown wolf and a bipedal werewolf. He isn’t the third one often and actually enjoys being a more typical wolf as he can be passed off as a wolf-dog hybrid and has gotten free bones and pets.
Ran away from his pack as they didn’t want him to die but also didn’t want him to get stronger, then raised a bunch of homeless orphans at a young age and also defended them from a trafficking ring by ripping out a bunch of people’s throats.
Yeah... he brought them to an orphanage afterwards as it’s safer then the streets. Then he ran away again; at this point he’s only 15-16.
Lives alone and homeless for a few more years before running into Virgil and immediately adopting him.
Patton helped Virgil find Janus and Logan so now he has more children (who are all older then him but he ignores that).
No one will go hungry EVER with Patton is around. He is the caretaker of this pack and he will not let his pups feel hungry ever-
He’s not over how shitty his pack was to him and it’s very obvious.
When he meets Emile though, it lifts a lot of weight off his shoulders as he learns not to be so all-bearing of others issues. And he also feels safer talking to him about his old pack as he doesn’t want to be pitied by anyone.
Tired-As-Fuck Vampire Logan
Who’s like 600 years old and knows that a lot of History that the modern day tells everyone is wrong and HATES that he’d be found out if he started yelling at people how wrong they are.
Parents wanted him to drop science and be a farmer. They, and his younger siblings, all died when their crops were poisoned two weeks after he moved out to do his science elsewhere.
Oh and he was bit by the person who 1. Was his partner in science and 2. He was head over heels for them because they let him take risks but still made sure he was safe as he did them.
So that pissed him off quite a bit. Because he almost instantly killed the couple who took in the sickly scientist because the wife cut her finger. He managed to kill the cow instead but he ran away afterwards and never saw them again.
Ran into Janus 300 years later -after travelling a LOT and learning a LOT and nearly dying a LOT and feeling so much that he doesn’t wanna feel anymore because that’s 300yrs of friends dying- and decided to travel with the one type of guy who won’t die of old age!!!
Then Virgil appeared. Then Patton. Then the Twins. Then Remy. Then Emile. He wishes that his dead heart would stop making him want to protect them all to his last breath but what can ya do?
He will murder anyone to save the others- but much prefers to just stay inside and just experiment on the occasional new thing that he finds.
Protector. Leader. Professor. Tired. Doctor. Cantor (yes he was Jewish for a little while after the bite but now he’s Atheist). University Chancellor. Lots of titles and he got them all legit too, although some are a little out of date.
Do not ask how he feels about the others. Especially Remus. He will glare at you without a word before moving on with his life.
Naga Will-Steal-You’re-Last-$5 Janus
Age? Social construct. He hints at being around Logan’s age but that could be give or take a hundred years or so.
He can shift between having a tail and legs- but ofc much prefers the tail. But he hates that his teeth change with it as it makes him hold his ‘s’ more when he talks.
When no tail, the left side of his face is very scarred. Someone tried burning off the scales on his face but the scars only appear when he’s trying to look human. When he has his tail, his scales replace them and they look fine.
Do not touch his hands or he will strangle you with them. They’re sensitive as hell without his gloves and he doesn’t know why.
He can hypnotise you to take a fucking break and he’s not afraid to do it (except on Logan as he’s somehow almost entirely immune)
Doesn’t like hypnotising his friends unless its just to take a break or to pull them out of an anxiety/panic attack. Every other living thing isn’t off limits though.
Lived alone until he met Logan. He also liked killing everyone he met until he met Logan. The only reason he didn’t kill Logan was because the nerd almost chopped off the end of his tail. The others don’t know this and it’s staying that way.
Has a cane to walk with for days that his legs decide that they wanna be a tail but he’s in public for some reason and he can’t and it sucks.
Almost killed Remy when they first met. Literally- he stabbed him in the side. Now they’re best buds over it and it was weird how quickly it happened too.
Has stolen Roman’s last $5. He will not be returning it. He hasn’t spent it because he finds him cute funny when he’s mad.
Siren But-Flips-Off-The-Sea-And-Heights Roman
Was born a Prince! With his weirdo of a twin. They were well liked and he was next in line for the throne and he was gonna be given a wife-
He wasn’t happy that it HAD to be a wife and when he argued that he wanted a guy; everyone turned on him and threw him into the ocean. So... fuck them.
Sirens saved him by turning him into one. He hates it.
Was forced to eat kelp or people. He chose kelp. He hated it.
Was dragged out of the sea by his brother who had been thrown into the evil swamp nearby and is now a banshee. Not as bad but he’s still rather pissed.
Although he was a little sad when he heard, 100yrs later, that his entire kingdom died of the plague. He moved on quickly though.
He hates the sea and doesn’t go near it. If it all dried up one day, it’d be the happiest day of his life. He doesn’t even eat seafood anymore as it makes him upset just looking at it.
He still likes to sing. He can control if it’s going to mind-control those who hear it or not; but it’s a little annoying as he can’t get too into it without accidentally losing control. Doesn’t stop him though.
He learnt how to play multiple instruments, made anonymously published books, the money-earner of the two. Although he was jealous that Remus was better at more hands-on stuff and is slowly, but happily, learning how to craft things from wood.
He and Remus never separated. Even when Monster Hunters sprayed him with water, forced his tail to appear, and took him to a facility to be imprisoned forever. That’s another thing he was mad about since Remus refused to just fucking RUN but he was happy to see his brother be proud of him when he dug VERY sharp teeth into a mans arm.
Had to be carried out by Janus when he, Logan, Patton and Virgil decided to free everyone inside. Every other creature could run except him, which led to him and Remus staying with them.
He definitely, 100%, no-doubt-about-it got a massive gay crush on Janus when he taught him how to fight. And sword fight. And dance. And how to look after his rather pretty scales.
In the 200-300yrs since he’s had a tail, he hasn’t ONCE really looked after them. So when Janus helped him out and made his scales less gross and more gorgeous, he actually started liking his tail a bit.
The Ocean can still go fuck itself though.
Oh and the one time they visited the Seattle Space Needle? Yeah, fuck heights too.
Banshee Will-Eat-Your-Fingers-If-Given-The-Chance Remus
After Roman got thrown into the ocean, he went on a rampage. He didn’t kill anyone, but he sure as hell got close to murdering their shitty father.
They tied him up and tossed him into the nearby swamp, where he nearly died. He inhaled days worth of magical fog that eventually turned him into a banshee. Which is just the ability to scream so loud that he makes people pass out, which is useful. Oh and sharp teeth that he looks after really well.
He managed to escape the forest, he screamed at a passing merchant and took his horse, and went to the ocean where he found Roman depressingly eating kelp on a rock off in the distance.
He literally got on a boat, dragged the surprised but happy fish into it with him, and made sure that they would never be separated again.
Didn’t care about what happened to their old kingdom.
He learnt how to make weapons, how to blacksmith, how to glassmith, how to make clothes- Literally anything he could since Roman kind of sucked at making anything that wasn’t music or a story of some kind. Fine by him since he knew the quality of the weapon he was stabbing people with.
When the hunters forcefully made Roman’s tail appear, he tried to scream to make them all pass out but they were ready and punched him out. He would have found it a little funny if he didn’t wake in a jail cell with a thing over his mouth.
The two worst things about it: He couldn’t see Roman and know if he was okay and he couldn’t cuss out the guards.
When that nerdy but very murderous vampire broke in and helped him out of the prison, he returned the favour by biting off the fingers of a guard that had broken Logan’s glasses. He later on fixed said glasses as well but he thought the fingers removal was a better thank you.
Loves Logan; only Roman, Janus and Emile have figured it out. Virgil thinks he’s plotting to kill the vampire one day, Remy doesn’t pay attention and Patton thinks that Logan is a good influence on him (he’s not wrong as he slowly stops describing brutal murders and talks about gross facts that Logan does and doesn’t know)
Remy No-It-Isn’t-Short-For-Remington-Yes-I-Am-A-Dragon-Roman
Born as a shapeshifting dragon. Was supposed to live like a recluse like the rest of his kind but said ‘fuck that’ and now works at a clothing store in a town full of morons for entertainment.
His kind does get tired rather easily so he lives off coffee. He is addicted and luckily for him; his body won’t get used to it so he doesn’t have to heighten the dose of caffeine in every drink. Yay!
Two things happened when he first met Janus and Roman. The first is that he got stabbed by the Naga because he may or may not have seen him wearing some shiny rings that he REALLY wanted. He wanted it more then Janus, so he found it okay to do- but got stabbed for it.
Two; he then bit Roman (who kinda deserved it when he tried to ‘slay the dragon’ when Janus had saw his unnaturally-bright brown eyes) and was dragged to see everyone to figure out what to do with him.
He managed to talk his way out of being murdered by Remus by sheer amazing personality (he’s x5 sassy when afraid and Remus thought he was hilarious) and just decided to hang around everyone just because he could.
Being stabbed turned into a joke between him and Janus and now they’re besties who totally don’t steal from random assholes that they run into down the street. It’s a now competition to have the shiniest collection (Janus is winning but gives Remy the occasional shiny thing as he knows that dragons get very mad about hoard sizes sometimes)
When they all moved towns, he dragged them to one where his old friend Emile was. He also introduced Virgil to Starbucks and their coffee and is still getting berated for it to this day.
Oh and when he does manage to let himself be a dragon, he’s about as large as a horse and has really pretty black scales with a light brown underbelly. His eyes turn bright green too. Virgil calls him Starbucks’s best mascot.
Emile Is-A-Disney-Fairy-Stereotype
Can grow and shrink on command; can also make his wings appear and disappear although it does hurt not to have them out almost daily.
Pink wings and pink hair. Very popular fairy attributes (for both fairies and Monster Hunters)
Can see aura’s of humans and monsters. They look very different depending on species but he LOVES seeing human ones the most as they are often filled with more colours.
Is a therapist, is a cartoon nerd, is able to make you a dress that disappears at midnight
... Can also see your dreams but doesn’t like doing it as its intrusive and it feels like he’s breaking some kind of human Confidentiality agreement
Being a therapist has changed a lot of his views on personal space (like the whole dream thing he has). He’s very in-your-face when excited, but as a kid he would CLING to people at every chance he had. Even strangers. It wasn’t a good habit.
Became a therapist, an independent one too, because a human friend of his died of suicide and he blamed his therapist who was telling him a lot of bad advice. And said therapist wasn’t supportive of his friends gender-identity crisis as he was very strict on ‘born a boy is a boy’ kind of thinking.
Now Emile takes in teenagers for free and adults at a lower price then a normal therapist. He doesn’t have a great living space (upstairs from his office don’t tell anyone) but he doesn’t care!
Met Remy as he was one of his patients once. He can tell when someone isn’t human due to their aura’s and nearly fell out of his chair when a FUCKING DRAGON walked in.
After Remy finished his sessions, he still visited occasionally and always remembered his favourite drink (chocolate smoothie with whipped cream and caramel shavings and a chocolate stick or five sticking out- and Remy thought his coffee addiction was bad)
And after not seeing Remy after six months, only to find that he has made friends with a lot of other creatures made him so happy.
Then confused when they all dragged in this fairy therapist into their group. Where Logan asked for the occasional emotional advice (not at ALL related to Remus-), Janus made sure he got a better living space, Remus and Virgil gave him someone to talk to about darker cartoon ideas, Roman (after the 18 times he asked for a magical dress) started making cartoon-stuffs for him, and Patton...
Patton helped him realise that he was still very gay despite the AroAce that he was. He gave him head scritches when stressed, the help he needed trauma-wise, the cartoon marathons with the doggo using his legs as a pillow-
And Patton gave him someone to talk to about all his feelings about his clients (without breaking any rules ofc). And about his old friend and the terrible therapists that he’s met.
He will admit to anyone that he squealed when Janus told him that Patton was pan aroace. Seriously, just ask. He is not ashamed of his excitement of the fact that he has a CHANCE WITH THE CUTE WOLF DAD.

   i mean you can read if you want? but it’s mainly for my own notes to refer back to.    hades in ovid metamorphoses book v & the orphic hymns
Bk V:332-384
Calliope sings: Cupid makes Dis fall in love
 ‘This much she played on her lute, with singing voice. Then called on us, - but perhaps you are not at leisure, or free to listen to a repetition of our music?’ ‘Do not stop’ said Pallas, ‘but sing your song again as you arranged it!’ and she sat amongst the light shadows of the grove. The Muse renewed her tale ‘We gave our best singer to the contest. Calliope, who rose, with her loose hair bound with ivy, tried out the plaintive strings with her fingers, then accompanied the wandering notes with this song.
 ‘“Ceres first turned the soil with curving plough, first ripened the crops and produce of the earth, first gave us laws: all things are Ceres’s gift. My song is of her. If only I could create a song in any way worthy of the goddess! This goddess is truly a worthy subject for my song.
 ‘“Trinacris, the vast isle of Sicily, had been heaped over the giant’s limbs, and with its great mass oppressed buried Typhoeus, he who had dared to aspire to a place in heaven. He struggles it’s true and often tries to rise, but his right hand is held by the promontory of Ausonian Pelorus, and his left hand by you, Pachynus. Lilybaeum presses on his legs, Etna weighs down his head, supine beneath it, Typhoeus throws ash from his mouth, and spits out flame. Often, a wrestler, he throws back the weight of earth, and tries to roll the high mountains and the cities from his body, and then the ground trembles, and even the lord of the silent kingdom is afraid lest he be exposed, and the soil split open in wide fissures, and the light admitted to scare the anxious dead.
 ‘“Fearing this disaster, the king of the dark had left his shadowy realm, and, drawn in his chariot by black horses, carefully circled the foundations of the Sicilian land. When he had checked and was satisfied that nothing was collapsing, he relinquished his fears. Then Venus, at Eryx, saw him moving, as she sat on the hillside, and embraced her winged son, Cupid, and said ‘My child, my hands and weapons, my power, seize those arrows, that overcome all, and devise a path for your swift arrows, to the heart of that god to whom the final share of the triple kingdom fell. You conquer the gods and Jupiter himself, the lords of the sea, and their very king, who controls the lords of the sea. Why is Tartarus excepted? Why not extend your mother’s kingdom and your own? We are talking of a third part of the world. And yet, as is evident to me, I am scorned in heaven, and Love’s power diminishes with mine.
 ‘“‘Don’t you see how Pallas, and the huntress Diana, forsake me? And Ceres’s daughter too, Proserpine, will be a virgin if we allow it, since she hopes to be like them. But you, if you delight in our shared kingdom, can mate the goddess to her uncle.’ So Venus spoke: he undid his quiver, and at his mother’s bidding took an arrow, one from a thousand, and none was sharper, more certain, or better obeyed the bow. Then he bent the pliant tips against his knee, and with his barbed arrow struck Dis in the heart.”’
“Venus of Eryx, from her mountain throne, Saw Hades and clasped her swift-winged son, and said: ‘Cupid, my child, my warrior, my power, Take those sure shafts with which you conquer all, And shoot your speedy arrows to the heart Of the great god to whom the last lot fell When the three realms were drawn. Your mastery Subdues the gods of heaven and even Jove, Subdues the ocean’s deities and him, Even him, who rules the ocean’s deities. Why should Hell lag behind? Why not there too Extend your mother’s empire and your own….? Then Cupid, guided by his mother, opened His quiver of all his thousand arrows Selected one, the sharpest and the surest, The arrow most obedient to the bow, And bent the pliant horn against his knee And shot the barbed shaft deep in Pluto’s heart.” ― Ovid, Metamorphoses
Bk V:385-424
Calliope sings: Dis and the abduction of Proserpine
 ‘“Not far from the walls of Enna, there is a deep pool. Pergus is its name. Caÿster does not hear more songs than rise from the swans on its gliding waves. A wood encircles the waters, surrounds them on every side, and its leaves act as a veil, dispelling Phoebus’s shafts. The branches give it coolness, and the moist soil, Tyrian purple flowers: there, it is everlasting Spring. While Proserpine was playing in this glade, and gathering violets or radiant lilies, while with girlish fondness she filled the folds of her gown, and her basket, trying to outdo her companions in her picking, Dis, almost in a moment, saw her, prized her, took her: so swift as this, is love. The frightened goddess cries out to her mother, to her friends, most of all to her mother, with piteous mouth. Since she had torn her dress at the opening, the flowers she had collected fell from her loosened tunic, and even their scattering caused her virgin tears. The ravisher whipped up his chariot, and urged on the horses, calling them by name, shaking out the shadowy, dark-dyed, reins, over their necks and manes, through deep pools, they say, and the sulphurous reeking swamps of the Palici, vented from a crevice of the earth, to Syracuse where the Bacchiadae, a people born of Corinth between two seas, laid out their city between unequal harbours.
 ‘“Between Cyane and Pisaean Arethusa, there is a bay enclosed by narrow arms. Here lived Cyane, best known of the Sicilian nymphs, from whom the name of the spring was also taken. She showed herself from the pool as far as her waist, and recognising the goddess, cried out to Dis, ‘No’, and ‘Go no further!’ ‘You cannot be Ceres’s son against her will: the girl should have been asked, and not abused. If it is right for me to compare small things with great, Anapis prized me and I wedded him, but I was persuaded by talk and not by terror.’ Speaking, she stretched her arms out at her sides, obstructing him. The son of Saturn could scarcely contain his wrath, and urging on the dread horses, he turned his royal sceptre with powerful arm, and plunged it through the bottom of the pool. The earth, pierced, made a road to Tartarus, and swallowed the headlong chariot, into the midst of the abyss.
Bk V:425-486
Calliope sings: Ceres searches for Proserpine
 ‘“Cyane, mourning the abduction of the goddess, and the contempt for the sanctities of her fountain, nursed an inconsolable grief in her silent heart, and pined away wholly with sorrow. She melted into those waters whose great goddess she had previously been. You might see her limbs becoming softened, her bones seeming pliant, her nails losing their hardness. First of all the slenderest parts dissolve: her dusky hair, her fingers and toes, her feet and ankles (since it is no great transformation from fragile limbs to cool waters). Next her breast and back, shoulders and flanks slip away, vanishing into tenuous streams. At last the water runs in her ruined veins, and nothing remains that you could touch.
 ‘“Meanwhile the mother, fearing, searches in vain for the maid, through all the earth and sea. Neither the coming of dewy-haired Aurora, nor Hesperus, finds her resting. Lighting pine torches with both hands at Etna’s fires, she wanders, unquiet, through the bitter darkness, and when the kindly light has dimmed the stars, she still seeks her child, from the rising of the sun till the setting of the sun.
 ‘“She found herself thirsty and weary from her efforts, and had not moistened her lips at any of the springs, when by chance she saw a hut with a roof of straw, and she knocked on its humble door. At that sound, an old woman emerged, and saw the goddess, and, when she asked for water, gave her something sweet made with malted barley. While she drank what she had been given a rash, foul-mouthed boy stood watching, and taunted her, and called her greedy. The goddess was offended, and threw the liquid she had not yet drunk, mixed with the grains of barley, in his face. His skin, absorbing it, became spotted, and where he had once had arms, he now had legs. A tail was added to his altered limbs, and he shrank to a little shape, so that he has no great power to harm. He is like a lesser lizard, a newt, of tiny size. The old woman wondered and wept, and, trying to touch the creature, it ran from her and searched out a place to hide. It has a name fitting for its offence, stellio, its body starred with various spots.
 ‘“It would take too long to tell through what lands and seas the goddess wandered. Searching the whole earth, she failed to find her daughter: she returned to Sicily, and while crossing it from end to end, she came to Cyane, who if she had not been changed would have told all. But though she wished to, she had neither mouth nor tongue, nor anything with which to speak. Still she revealed clear evidence, known to the mother, and showed Persephone’s ribbon, fallen, by chance, into the sacred pool. As soon as she recognised it, the goddess tore her dishevelled hair, and beat her breast again and again with her hands, as if she at last comprehended the abduction. She did not know yet where Persephone was, but condemned all the lands, and called them thankless and unworthy of her gift of corn, Sicily, that Trinacria, above all, where she had discovered the traces of her loss.
 ‘“So, in that place, with cruel hands, she broke the ploughs that turned up the soil, and, in her anger, dealt destruction to farmers, and the cattle in their fields, alike, and ordered the ever-faithful land to fail, and spoiled the sowing. The fertility of that country, acclaimed throughout the world, was spoken of as a fiction: the crops died as young shoots, destroyed by too much sun, and then by too much rain. Wind and weather harmed them, and hungry birds gathered the scattered seed. Thistles and darnel and stubborn grasses ruined the wheat harvest.
Bk V:487-532
Calliope sings: Ceres asks Jupiter’s help
 ‘“Then Arethusa, once of Elis, whom Alpheus loved, lifted her head from her pool, and brushed the wet hair from her forehead, saying ‘O great goddess of the crops, mother of that virgin sought through all the earth, end your fruitless efforts, and do not anger yourself so deeply against the faithful land. The land does not deserve it: it opened to the abduction against its will. It is not my country, I pray for: I came here as a stranger. Pisa is my country, and Elis is my source. I am a foreigner in Sicily, but its soil is more to me than other lands. Here is my home: here are my household gods. Most gentle one, preserve it. A fitting time will come for me to tell you, how I moved from my country, and came to Ortygia, over such a great expanse of sea, when you are free of care, and of happier countenance. The fissured earth showed me a way, and slipping below the deepest caverns, here, I lifted up my head, and saw the unfamiliar stars.
 ‘“‘So, while I glided underground down there, among Stygian streams, with these very eyes, I saw your Proserpine. She was sad indeed, but, though her face was fearful still, she was nevertheless a queen, the greatest one among the world of shadows, the powerful consort, nevertheless, of the king of hell!’ The mother was stunned to hear these words, as if petrified, and was, for a long time, like someone thunderstruck, until the blow of deep amazement became deep indignation. She rose, in her chariot, to the realms of heaven. There, her whole face clouded with hate, she appeared before Jove with dishevelled hair.
 ‘“‘Jupiter I have come to you in entreaty for my child and for your own’ she cried. ‘If the mother finds no favour with you, let the daughter move you, and do not let your concern for her be less, I beg you, because I gave her birth. See, the daughter I have searched for so long, has been found, if you call it finding to lose her more surely, if you call it finding merely to know where she is. I can bear the fact that she has been abducted, if he will only return her! A spoiler is not worthy to be the husband of your daughter, even if she is no longer my daughter.’ Jupiter replied ‘Our child is a pledge and a charge, between us, you and I. But if only we are willing to give things their right names, the thing is not an insult in itself: the truth is it is love. He would not be a shameful son-in-law for us, if only you would wish it, goddess. How great a thing it is to be Jupiter’s brother, even if all the rest is lacking! Why, what if there is nothing lacking at all, except what he yielded to me by lot? But if you have such a great desire to separate them, Proserpine shall return to heaven, but on only one condition, that no food has touched her lips, since that is the law, decreed by the Fates.’
Bk V:533-571
Calliope sings: Persephone’s fate
 ‘“He spoke, and Ceres felt sure of regaining her daughter. But the Fates would not allow it, for the girl had broken her fast, and wandering, innocently, in a well-tended garden, she had pulled down a reddish-purple pomegranate fruit, hanging from a tree, and, taking seven seeds from its yellow rind, squeezed them in her mouth. Ascalaphus was the only one to see it, whom, it is said, Orphne bore, to her Acheron, in the dark woods, she not the least known of the nymphs of Avernus. He saw, and by his cruel disclosure, prevented Proserpine’s return.              Then the queen of Erebus grieved, and changed the informant into a bird of ill omen: she sprinkled his head with water from the Phlegethon, and changed him to a beak, plumage, and a pair of huge eyes. Losing his own form he is covered by his tawny wings, and looks like a head, and long, curving claws. He scarcely stirs the feathers growing on his idle wings. He has become an odious bird, a messenger of future disaster, the screech owl, torpid by day, a fearful omen to mortal creatures.
 ‘“He indeed can be seen to have deserved his punishment, because of his disclosure and his words. But why have you, Sirens, skilled in song, daughters of Acheloüs, the feathers and claws of birds, while still bearing human faces? Is it because you were numbered among the companions, when Proserpine gathered the flowers of Spring? When you had searched in vain for her on land, you wanted, then, to cross the waves on beating wings, so that the waters would also know of your trouble. The gods were willing, and suddenly you saw your limbs covered with golden plumage. But, so that your song, born, sweetly, in our ears, and your rich vocal gift, might not be lost with your tongues, each virgin face and human voice remained.
 ‘“Now Jupiter, intervening, between his brother and grieving sister, divides the turning year, equally. And now the goddess, Persephone, shared divinity of the two kingdoms, spends so many months with her mother, so many months with her husband. The aspect of her face and mind alters in a moment. Now the goddess’s looks are glad that even Dis could see were sad, a moment ago. Just as the sun, hidden, before, by clouds of rain, wins through and leaves the clouds.
Orphic Hymn 17 to Pluton
Pluto, magnanimous, whose realms profound are fix’d beneath the firm and solid ground, In the Tartarian plains remote from fight, and wrapt forever in the depths of night; Terrestrial Jove [Zeus Khthonios], thy sacred ear incline, and, pleas’d, accept thy mystic’s hymn divine. Earth’s keys to thee, illustrious king belong, its secret gates unlocking, deep and strong. ‘Tis thine, abundant annual fruits to bear, for needy mortals are thy constant care. To thee, great king, Avernus is assign’d, the seat of Gods, and basis of mankind. Thy throne is fix’d in Hade’s dismal plains, distant, unknown to rest, where darkness reigns; Where, destitute of breath, pale spectres dwell, in endless, dire, inexorable hell; And in dread Acheron, whose depths obscure, earth’s stable roots eternally secure. O mighty dæmon, whose decision dread, the future fate determines of the dead, With captive Proserpine [Kore], thro’ grassy plains, drawn in a four-yok’d car with loosen’d reins, Rapt o'er the deep, impell’d by love, you flew 'till Eleusina’s city rose to view; There, in a wond'rous cave obscure and deep, the sacred maid secure from search you keep, The cave of Atthis, whose wide gates display an entrance to the kingdoms void of day. Of unapparent works, thou art alone the dispensator, visible and known. O pow'r all-ruling, holy, honor’d light, thee sacred poets and their hymns delight: Propitious to thy mystic’s works incline, rejoicing come, for holy rites are thine.
Orphic Hymn 28 to Pluton
Daughter of Jove [Zeus], almighty and divine, come, blessed queen, and to these rites incline: Only-begotten, Pluto’s [Plouton’s] honor’d wife, O venerable Goddess, source of life: 'Tis thine in earth’s profundities to dwell, fast by the wide and dismal gates of hell: Jove’s [Zeus’] holy offspring, of a beauteous mien, fatal [Praxidike], with lovely locks, infernal queen: Source of the furies [Eumenides], whose blest frame proceeds from Jove’s [Zeus’] ineffable and secret seeds: Mother of Bacchus [Eubouleos], Sonorous, divine, and many-form’d, the parent of the vine: The dancing Hours [Horai] attend thee, essence bright, all-ruling virgin, bearing heav'nly light: Illustrious, horned, of a bounteous mind, alone desir’d by those of mortal kind. O, vernal queen, whom grassy plains delight, sweet to the smell, and pleasing to the sight: Whose holy form in budding fruits we view, Earth’s vig'rous offspring of a various hue: Espous’d in Autumn: life and death alone to wretched mortals from thy power is known: For thine the task according to thy will, life to produce, and all that lives to kill. Hear, blessed Goddess, send a rich increase of various fruits from earth, with lovely Peace; Send Health with gentle hand, and crown my life with blest abundance, free from noisy strife; Last in extreme old age the prey of Death, dismiss we willing to the realms beneath, To thy fair palace, and the blissful plains where happy spirits dwell, and Pluto [Plouton] reigns.

Rating the states I drove through on my way up here in June:
Florida: Endless. Endless. Endless. There's nothing but swamp once you leave Orlando. I stopped at a gas station somewhere north of Gainesville and got stuck behind a giant lifted pickup with an ALL TRUCKS MATTER sticker. I never thought I'd get out of the state. I saw the biggest Confederate flag I've ever seen in my life in Northern Florida and I kept getting visions of crashing and dying somewhere along the road. It was the middle of the day, but my memories of driving through Florida look physically dark. I kept seeing oddly forboding Buc-ees's billboards that said shit like IT'S COMING and TICK-TOCK. The moment I crossed the state line into Georgia I screamed in joy and elation and relief and released the panic from my body I didn't even know I was holding. I had made it, I had made it, and in that moment I knew I would survive the rest of the trip. 1/10. (It would be zero, but I'll give it one star as a thank you to the eldritch being that is Florida for letting me out alive.)
Georgia: Not ten minutes into Georgia, the first store I saw was an enormous strip mall looking building labeled BIBLE STORE. Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of Bible signs on my way out of Florida. But for the first hour into Georgia, you see nothing but run-down billboards fortelling the coming End Times or showing crucifixion scenes or random Bible verses or pro-life organizations. Every so often there'd be these MASSIVE gas stations called Magnolia Plantation and they looked like this. Yes indeed, that is a giant tourist trappy gas station in the shape of a plantation.
I stopped for gas in the middle of bumfuck nowhere about halfway through the state and got a chicken sandwich and watched a suprisingly kind and hospitable interaction between the gas station owners (who had T shirts for sale that said stuff like "I'm a TRUMP GIRL, does that OFFEND you?") and the dudes who were driving up to Atlanta to protest.
The northern part of Georgia is all Smoky Mountains and all absolutely beautiful. I watched the sunset and listened to Sleeping at Last as I crossed the border into Tennessee about thirty minutes before the curfew, and for the first time in a while, I felt at peace. (6.5/10, actually, mostly for the Smokies. My main regret is not listening to more southern gothic music on the road.)
Tennessee: I stayed in an AirBnB in a mountain house in Chattanooga for two nights and there was a wonderful cat who'd beg for pets all the time. Spent the morning hiking around in the mountains up there and got a little bit lost but there was a tiny waterfall, some VERY stupid-looking daddy longlegs, lots of rocks, and a Very Fun tree swing in the middle of the trail that was kind of haphazardly nailed to a pine tree.
I was yelling "I'M GONNA DIE I'M GONNA DIE I'M GONNA DIE FUCK FUCK FUCK" the ENTIRE drive through the winding mountain roads. SOMEHOW I made it. And then got stuck in the mountains with no reception or data in back to back traffic for an hour. It was pretty much just me and the truckers. We'd be at a standstill for ten minutes at a time so I just... Put honey mustard on my sandwich and ate it. While strumming my guitar aimlessly and singing nonsense. It was kind of nice, actually.
Nashville was cool. I also remember seeing some signs hung across the bridges by protesters with Fucked Up Nashville Police Brutality Facts. And before I left Tennessee, I stopped at the last Publix before I hit the land of... whatever the hell Piggly Wigglys are. Tennessee Publixes are the same as Florida Publixes. I got some of their fried chicken and sweet tea and a turkey salsalito sandwich and mourned. 8.5/10
Kentucky: There is nothing in Kentucky. There's just nothing. I think Louisville is the only city there and that's basically just in Indiana. I remember driving past a Kentucky Derby sign and thinking, "This is it. That's all that's in the state." If I ever have to road trip again I might just drive AROUND the state. I hated it. 0/10.
Indiana: Indiana is, essentially, the South of the Midwest. It's the South without any of the hospitality or the charm or the good food. It's the South without a soul. There are towns named shit like Whiteland and Plainfield and that's exactly how it is.
I had to stop for gas somewhere around here and I felt my soul die with every minute I was there. The air was dry. The grass was pristinely perfect. The white picket fences and suburban houses were perfectly spaced. And there was a horrible, horrible, horrible energy underneath all of it. The parking lot adjacent to mine was for some kind of Trump club? My memories of it all were so vague and so unpleasant and full of bland Republican nonsense. At least the South had a soul about it. But I could get the sense that the families here probably boiled their chicken breasts or some shit. Unsettling/10.
Illinois: You know what? I don't really have any complaints about Illinois. I didn't know how big the Chicago area was, and there were some pretty rocks, and it was overall pleasant.
Fuck.
Fuck.
FUCK.
I can't believe I forgot. The wind turbines. I don't know WHAT it is about them, and wind turbines (and other massive energy generating machines that sit out in fields in immeasurable numbers, like oil wells) are already inherently unsettling to me, but driving through an endless field of thousands of them, towering all around me, their blades rotating hypnotically like the too-sharp arms of some kind of monster, the deep whirring sound permeating through my car and through my brain, with no end in sight and no memory of how they begun, was easily one of the Top Ten Scariest Moments In Neil's Life.
For an eternity, I was some character in The Magnus Archives who'd just been unwittingly thrown into the Vast. I thought it would never end. I thought I would be trapped there, driving through that endless sea of turbines, forever.
And then it did. It ended. I didn't dare look back, lest the turbines take me again. 0̶̛̲̩̞͚͙̓ͅ0̷̡̰͔̯̟͌͠0̸͍̹̂́̈́̕̚/10.
Wisconsin: The moment I got to Wisconsin, I saw a wooden statue of a moose and some Outdoorsy Adventure Companies in the shape of log cabins and just about lost my shit. I was tearing up and shaking like a goddamn puppy. I drove through a tunnel and lost my shit again. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. I'm here. I'm here. I'm here. Tunnel. Tunnel. Tunnel. I was so confused by the concept of surroundings changing with the seasons that when I got to the house, I was half-convinced Jude had moved to a different, much greener neighborhood. Seasons? Seasons? Seasons? WISCONSIN/10

Chapter 6: The Scout
Krolva District, Wall Rose
Spring, 825
“Mama, why can’t I go to school with Papa and Derek yet?”
Erwin whined in his little voice. His chubby little legs were swinging and bouncing up and against his bum from where he was sprawled out on his mother’s Persian carpet, with his favorite picture book of The Secret Garden opened in front of him—Erwin has always been an avid reader. And he loved The Secret Garden best of all.
Agatha Smith looked up from her paperwork. As Krolva District’s council chairperson, she’s been busy reading through district reports all morning. For the most part, her son has been quietly reading his book like the good boy he is. But Agatha knew her son, and it was only a matter of time before her little genius started asking her the curiosities which—how Erwin would say—‘bugged his mind.’
“Because you’re still little, darling. You’re just three years old!” Agatha smiled brightly at her baby, hoping it would help convince Erwin why he can’t go join his father and brother yet. Although, Agatha tried to ignore the twinge of sadness in her stomach at the thought of her son growing up.
She was perfectly fine with her baby staying home, and keeping her company; safe in her home office for the rest of forever.
Erwin meanwhile, as much as he enjoyed reading and coloring in his mother’s pretty office—with all the big books, the many vases full of  flowers, and the ever-present smell of strawberry tea—still wanted to go on the adventures Derek would  tell him about whenever his brother comes back home in the afternoon.
School just sounded so fun to Erwin! He wanted to play with kids like him, and read more books!
Erwin puffed up his cheeks, ‘It wasn’t fair. How come Derek gets to go, all because he’s older?’
“But I thought you said I was a big boy already!”
Agatha tried to hide her smile at Erwin’s quick retort. Her son has always been a clever boy.
“Well, you need to get just one more year bigger,” the boy’s mother says, as she held up one finger.
Erwin pouted. His cheeks were starting to grow red; the boy was going to cry.
“ookay, ookay,” Agatha immediately stood to scoop up her son the moment she saw him rubbing at  his blue eyes. She repositioned him at her hip, and peeked into the little boy’s clear blue eyes.
Her husband’s eyes.
Tiny drops of tears were already rolling down Erwin’s chubby, red cheeks. Like tiny little diamonds.
Agatha cooed, “I’m sorry you can’t go with Papa and Derek yet, but don’t you like staying with mama at home?” Agatha’s cobalt eyes peeked into Erwin’s. Erwin nodded, still swiping his small fists at his tears.
“How about Mama makes you your favorite strawberry pie, huh? Would that make you feel better?”
Erwin’s teary eyes looked up at his mother, “You’ll make me lots?”
His mother only ever gave him one slice since she’s very particular about making sure her boys are eating healthy.
And anyways, as a working mom, having two sugar-rushed boys isn’t going to help her productivity. Nor does she want them to be spoiled.
It’s a  different story for Erwin’s father, though. Jonathan was really a child himself, and saw no problem in giving his sons a few extra slices of pies.
As long as his wife never finds out, of course.
Agatha pauses at the request. Lots of slices meant lots more strawberries to pick. She glanced back at her pile of paperwork, and all the district proposals waiting for her approval to peruse. Agatha knew she simply did not have the extra time to pick strawberries.
“Well, then why don’t you go ask Sibyl to accompany you to pick yourself the juiciest, sweetest strawberries we have, yeah? Don’t you want to pick the best ones, Erwin?”
Erwin immediately perked up, “Yes, please Mama! I want to pick the strawberries!”
And just like, Erwin’s little legs ran him out the room and to his nanny for an hour of chores.
Not only did she calm her son down, that was also one task off her planner. Agatha patted herself. ‘Nice save, Mrs. Smith.’
~
When Jonathan and Derek arrived home that afternoon, Jonathan immediately sought out his wife, who was at the patio overlooking the garden. She was busy setting up tea and freshly baked pie slices for her two other boys, while a little Erwin was already happily scooping up the last of his strawberry pie.
Jonathan kissed the top of his wife’s sandy blonde head, and patted his younger son’s golden one.
“Someone’s been chowing down!” Jonathan’s laughter seemed to boom to Erwin’s ears. “Wow! Seems like Mama’s been spoiling you today, huh?” Jonathan’s clear blue eyes crinkled tenderly as he watched Erwin drop a big strawberry into his tiny rosebud mouth
“PIES!!!”
Derek immediately ran and seated himself down the moment he saw the treats. He excitedly took a teaspoon, started scooping himself big portions of strawberry pie.
“Hey young man, kiss mama first,” Jonathan chides his eldest. Agatha bends down, and soon enough Derek gives his mother a kiss on the cheek. Though, the kid was didn’t even look away from the treats.
Jonathan was about to say more, but his wife just patted his chest sweetly, and mouthed, ‘it’s fine.’ The parents watched their kids eat, while gently reminding them to slow down and make space for dinner.
In the middle of tea time, with his mouth full of strawberries, Derek exclaims, “You won’t belieeeeve what Papa taught us today, Erwin!”
Erwin looked to his brother in wonder, “Tell me, tell me!” Erwin caught his mother’s disapproving look.
“…please?”
Before Derek could gulped down what he was chewing, Jonathan already cut in. “Aww, don’t tell spoilers, Derek.”
“Spoilers?” two pairs of little clear and cobalt blue eyes looked to their father.
“It means, let your brother find out our lesson himself once he’s your age,” Jonathan says as he gives Derek a little tickle. Derek giggled happily.
“Awwwwww,” Erwin whined, knowing he’d have to wait a while, seeing as Derek was already six.
“But I wanna know, Papa,” he pouted.
“Want to,” Agatha corrected.
“I want to know, Papa.”
“Alright, alright,” Jonathan gave in. He couldn’t really resist his sons. “How about I tell you the Legend of King Arthur and The Excalibur tonight. Does that sound good?”
The boys cheered, already babbling how that was their favorite story, and how excited they were for bedtime. Another tactic Jonathan picked up from his clever wife to get the boys into bed.
“As long as,” Agatha cautioned within the din of giggles, “You smarty-pants go to bed on time.”
Agatha had an eyebrow quirked up, as she turned to give her husband a stern look as well. As if saying, ‘You better make sure, Jonathan.’
All three, effectively charming their mom, were already giving her puppy dog eyes. Jonathan proceeded to solemnly cross his heart, and so did the boys.
~
For Erwin, his father was not only the smartest person he’s ever met, he was also the most fun. His dad was so fun, that even his stressed out mother would laugh whenever he’s around.
And every night, Jonathan made sure to read to his kids. Animatedly telling them stories of far off lands and great dragons for kings and princes to slay.
Every night, passing on to his sons the yearning to dream beyond. To look beyond. To look around their realities with a curious, ever-critical eye.
And it was something the brothers picked up well, as the two grew up locking themselves in their home library, getting lost in volume after volume. Their fair heads joined together as they poured into a book on the carpeted floor.
Even after what ultimately happened, Derek stayed firm and true; Erwin’s best friend and brother till the very end. The two swore to defend their father’s legacy. Dedicated their hearts to finding out the truth because really,
They were still the little children listening to their father’s stories in wonderment.
~~~
Whispers and shuffling snap Erwin out of his ruminations.
Already at the Corps’ Archives Office with his father’s research journal hidden beneath several notebooks and volumes of military discourse (and perhaps a love letter for a certain bright eyed woman), Erwin hesitated at turning the doorknob.
Was some other cadet using the office today? Erwin was sure he read Derek’s schedule correctly before burning the letter. Then Erwin had his answer;
“Oh Derek, please!”
Considering his brother’s uhh… reputation, it wasn’t difficult to guess what exactly was happening on the other side of that door.
Erwin shook his head, ‘That letter wasn’t kidding. He’s got a girl alright.’
And with a smirk, he then swings open the door—
Adeline Müller jumps off of her lover in a panic. It was clear by the disheveled locks of her platinum blonde hair, as well as her smushed cherry lip gloss that the two have been busy.
“E-Erwin!” she exclaims, trying to smooth down her now-crinkled nurse’s uniform as gracefully as she can despite the situation.
Adeline’s doe-like purple eyes flitted between her lover and his brother’s knowing look.
Erwin smiled courteously at the lady, “Good morning, Nurse Adeline.”
“Hi.” Adeline gulps, as her small hand flies to hide the creeping blush at her neck.
Erwin then looks pointedly at his brother, a smug look on his face.
“Derek.”
Derek puffed out an exasperated breath.
“Brother.” Derek grits out as his eyes turn to slits. “Punctual as always.”
Erwin gestured offhandedly, a picture of nonchalance, “You called for me.” His polite but teasing smile comes back, and turns to Adeline, who has now managed to put her little nurse cap to rights on her head. “I hope my brother’s been a good patient, seeing as you’ve been busy helping him feel better, miss.”
Derek puffs out his chest at that, his Scouting Legion uniform making his already imposing height look even more domineering. He pulls a profusely blushing Adeline to his side, proudly beaming out, and “Oh I’ve been an excellent patient, Erwin. Little Nurse Adeline here has been tending to my Titan bone—“
“Shut up!” came the woman’s cry after giving her lover a good smack to the arm. She tried to look as menacing as she can in the face of all the cajoling, but see…
…she was just too cute, and the fierce eyes just really weren’t working.
Adeline Müller was already a remarkably petite woman. And at that very moment, not only did she feel miniscule, she also wished the ground would swallow her up in embarrassment.
Well, Adeline supposes, at least it was just Erwin. Any other cadet, and news would have reached her father and…
Adeline shivered, ‘Who knows what he would do to her Derek?’ Nonetheless, she knew what Erwin was here for, and she was more than willing to leave.
Derek started chuckling, and leaned down to tenderly kiss the top of her head. Suddenly, all was forgotten, and Adeline was once again gazing dotingly up at her lover. Derek then whispers ‘conspiratorially’ at his brother, “Legion perks.” Then winks at Adeline.
Adeline rolls her big purple eyes, while Erwin just gave a slow, sarcastic nod, his mouth forming an—
‘Ah.’
Before the most infuriating brothers in the Three Walls decided to tease her again, Adeline hastily darts over to Derek to give him a peck, saying that the Head Nurse will be looking for her at the Infirmary soon, which Derek returns with whispering in the poor girl’s ear, before kissing her hand.
Whatever it was, had Adeline blooming red, her eyes growing to saucers. She swats at Derek again, before flying out the door, she pauses;
“Bye, Erwin. And please tell Mike that Mrs. Kissling is onto him and Greta!”
Then the tiny blonde all but runs out the office.
Erwin sighs inwardly, ‘Even the fucking nurses Mike?!’
“Yes, ma’am!” Erwin hollers back. His face turns serious as he faces his brother,
“Müller’s going to castrate you.”
“Hah! I can outrun Corpse Cock on foot, and he still won’t catch me even if the old bastard used 3DMG!”
“She’s engaged.  To Alexei Lobov, no less.”
“And? I’m pretty much as good as dead with what I do. What’s some butterball nobleman gonna do to scare me?”
Derek swept back the same golden blonde hair as Erwin’s, while his cobalt blue eyes twinkled.
“Besides, I’m not going to go around fighting Titans to have Corpse Cock and some pig getting in the way of me and my girl,” came Derek’s obnoxious reply with his equally obnoxious grin.
Derek Smith was a man with what their mother calls ‘an award-winning smile.’  This was only accentuated by his Smith-good looks, his ever-present stubble, and perfect teeth.
Erwin snorted sarcastically, “Nice to see the Titans haven’t scared the jackass out of you yet, Derek.”
Although Erwin’s brother can be a smart-mouthed git, hearing his familiar Wall Rose twang alone was enough to bring back the nostalgia of home. Soon enough, both men were shaking their heads and chuckling fondly, knowing full well that no other man within the three walls could understand the other, as much as each other.
And within that familiar bubble of a moment, the Smith brothers finally move to give each other a firm hug.
~
Derek Smith’s thick eyebrows (it’s genetic, unfortunately) crinkled in concentration, as he was hunched over trying to discern the messy scrawl of his father’s handwriting. Derek rubbed at his stubble, a frown marking his lips, “Sweet Sina Dad, it’s like you don’t want anyone to ever read your work.”
“Speak for yourself,” Erwin retorts, a hand over his jaw, as one hand held Derek’s report up to the light, slowly realizing that the sun wasn’t making his brother’s writing any more legible. “It’s like reading code, Derek. You write your reports to Shadis like this?” Erwin turns to his brother with an incredulous look, lightly chucking the paper atop the mahogany desk.
“Hey, they asked for a researcher, not a clerk,” Derek retorts, throwing a hand up.
It was almost like a ritual for the Smith brothers to pour over the leather journals of Jonathan Smith whenever they have their intelligence meetings. It was a nice way to revisit and review whatever their father theorized in conjunction to what new information they’ve got.
The journals’ old leather smell also reminded them of their father, and that was always a comfort—like an intangible slice of their childhood.
Derek straightens up and breathes out, “Alright, give me that Erwin, I’ll just fucking tell you like the baby you are.” He swipes the report from the desk. “Sheesh, I’m like mom reading you The Secret Garden again,” the older brother mutters.
Erwin made face. “At least I don’t write like a cryptid, asswipe.”
“iM eRwIn AnD I nEeD mY BiG BroThEr tO rEaD tO mE.”
“I’m going to break your face.
“Try.”
“You sure? Because I just might, and we both know mom’s going to take my side.”
The two brothers stared each other down. Seething cobalt blue meeting challenging cool blue ones. It was an undeniable fact—Erwin was their mom’s favorite, her baby.
Derek nodded slowly in understanding; his jaw locked, arms crossed over his chest.
“Okay Erwin, low blow. But I’ll give you that.”  Derek, still locking eyes with his brother, started shuffling the papers, and flipping to the page he needs.
Erwin just gave a smug quirk of his eyebrows.
Derek cleared his throat. “Shadis managed to scrounge up enough funding to finance an expedition next month.”
“About time.”
“Tell me about it. It’s not much, but clearly enough for Shadis to make a gamble. It seems like this one’s highly classified– a job for just us Intelligence, because we’ll be attempting to set up base outside the Walls.”
That certainly interested Erwin. It was no secret that Commander Shadis’ lobby for continued (much less increased) funding for the Scouting Legion is an ongoing uphill battle. The House of Lords is simply too uninterested in patronizing a losing war, when there are people without food, homes, and healthcare to prioritize…or so they say.
And so this sudden decision to undertake such an ambitious mission when the Legion can’t even seem to return with less than a fifty-percent mortality rate, and with barely enough funding to boot, would only mean one thing;
“There have been developments to the situation. Shadis is no gambling man, he wouldn’t risk his best and brightest on a whim,” says Erwin, his eyes so wide and so clear, they almost had a sparkle to them.
Derek had a similar expression on his face, but paired with an impish grin. “Exactly. And Ilse Langar and I have been ordered by the horse’s mouth to ‘record any suspected anomalies within titan territory.’ ”
Erwin’s jaw nearly dropped. “You’re looking for something.”
“But we don’t know what that is,” Derek replied.
Erwin, ever the curious one, took a step closer to his brother, almost like a child begging his parents for the surprise. “But you’ve got an idea, don’t you?”
Derek’s cheeky grin flashed back on, “…Maybe.”
Erwin rolled his eyes. He then hastily gestures for his brother to take a seat, as he took one himself, all too eager to hear the conspiracy.
“Beginning of last year, I have a source from the Garrison tell me rumors of dear old Shadis finding a man wandering from outside the Walls,” Derek began. “Apparently, he seemed like he knew nothing of our society. Like he was a foreigner. I reported this to Shadis during a meeting, and guess what? The man was almost uninterested. Far too eager to shrug the rumors off as bullshit. And now a year later, he’s kick starting a highly-sensitive mission to set up research bases outside the Walls?”
Derek leaned back in his chair, his arms crossed. “You won’t get any smoke without a fire. These rumors came from somewhere. That possibility alone is worth investigating. And if it were true?” The scout tightened his hold on his arms, his biceps flexing. “It would be an astonishing turn of events.”
Erwin had his hands cupping his jaw. A thumb caressing his chin in deep thought, as his eyebrows furrowed together. His clear blue eyes were bright and sharply focused on a random point in the room, as the many kegs in his mind started turning.
A man wondering from outside the Walls. Clueless of their societal structure.
“You think the commander is hiding something?”
Derek breathed out, releasing his arms. “I think the commander knows something. Shadis’ heart is true; he wouldn’t keep information like this from his officers if it meant serving humanity’s best interests.”
And to that end, Erwin agreed. He would do the same if only to get to the truth. Surely, a man lying to pursue his true intentions is not unheard of. In fact, the Smith brothers are doing just that—committing treason for the purpose of realizing their father’s dream. Almost as if he was reading his brother’s mind, Derek clear his throat and declares, “We’ll know the truth soon enough. I’ll make sure of it. I’m leaving in two weeks, and I’ll be on the lookout for any leads while I’m stationed at base. I’ll rendezvous with you once I’m back.”
At that, Erwin turns to Derek immediately.  “How long are you staying there?”
Derek pursed his lips. “Indefinitely.”
A pregnant pause overcame the brothers. Indefinitely, or until the base gets overrun by Titans.
And as if Derek was reading his brother’s mind, he shrugged, “Occupational hazard.”
The younger brother nodded in understanding. Erwin knew. “What am I going to tell mom?”
Erwin did not dare let any emotion pass over his face as he watched his older brother’s shoulders droop just that little bit. While Erwin may be their mother’s favorite, but Derek was the more emotional of the two—much like his father. Derek Smith, brilliant as his mind may be, still operated with his heart in consideration. And choosing to potentially let their mother grieve over a son was a truly heavy burden to bear. More so with the memories of their mother weeping inconsolably for days after she lost the love of her life, playing at the back of his head.
Erwin was probably too young for their mother’s grief to have an impression on him; especially since their mother particularly protected Erwin from ever seeing her in hysterics because of the guilt poor little Erwin was nursing. But Derek? Derek witnessed his mother at the lowest point of her life—sobbing alone in her marriage bed, her dead husband’s coat wrapped around her, her nose buried in their father’s pillow.
And their mother—like Erwin—was not a woman who would easily let herself go to emotions. So seeing her in that state was its own kind of trauma for Derek
Derek stood up, already getting misty eyed at the memories whirring in his head. He starts fussing over organizing and straightening all the books, journals, and papers scattered across the table. “The usual, Erwin. ‘Derek is off at another mission. He’ll visit as soon as he can.’ ” His voice was pert.
“And Adeline?”
Derek stopped. He faced Erwin, his mouth a thin line. His cobalt eyes serious and intense.
“Make sure Adeline gets my Wings.” The Scout’s finger absent-mindedly caressed the proud Wing of Freedom at his chest. “That’s all a man like me can give her.”
Wings are all a man like me can ever give an angel like her, Derek muses in his thoughts.
While Erwin doesn’t completely approve of Derek’s attachment to Adeline, without hesitation, he clamped his brother’s shoulder in a tight grip. As if saying, ‘You have my word, brother.’
Derek breathed out a small sigh of relief, also giving a firm pat at Erwin’s hand on his shoulder. Derek turned back to the books and papers he was aligning and tidying up earlier, telling Erwin about how he probably won’t be around for their father’s death anniversary because of his rigorous training in the upcoming weeks for the mission.
“…Although I’ll make sure to visit mom at Wall Rose before I leave, don’t worry—“
An envelope slips out of one of the journals Derek was straightening. Immediately, Erwin reaches out, almost lunging at Derek, “Don’t touch that–!”
But it was too late.
Derek had already pulled the letter out of reach. Already opened the still unsealed flap, and flicked open what is obviously a love letter. Derek wordlessly held a hand out, effectively keeping Erwin a distance away. Derek’s body was turned away from Erwin, as he read what his little brother wrote:
My Darling Marie,
How do you do it?
I would like to think that I am a strong man. I’m a soldier trained in combat. And Sina knows, I can kick a grown man to his knees. Perhaps even slay a whole Titan.
But you, my lovely, you weaken me so.
You soften my heart so much that, while most men my age dream of glory and fortune, I only dream of a dance with you.
To hold your delicate hand and kiss it, to hold you close to my chest so I could gaze into your eyes; eyes so bright, they put the very stars to shame!
So? How do you do it, sweet Marie?
What power do you wield over me that I can’t—nor want—to shake off?
Forever Yours,
Nile
Erwin watched in horror as his older brother’s face went from curious, to intrigued, to absolutely gleeful.
Slowly and comically, Derek lifted his head to look at is brother; A funny look on his face.
Erwin prayed to the Goddesses he wasn’t blushing.
Oh, but Erwin was blushing.
“Who’s Marie?”
Erwin snatches the letter away, not looking Derek in the eye.
“No one.”
“No one?”
Derek was still grinning cheekily though, as if he just learned a most salacious secret. Erwin sighed. “Nile’s courting her.”
Derek’s not buying it. “Yeah? Then why’s his love letters for her with you?”
“Because.” Erwin snapped, already itching to change the subject. “The bastard promised me Ragako in exchange for wooing her with love letters for him.”
Derek quirked a thick eyebrow, clearly seeing through his younger brother’s bullshit. Sometimes Derek forgets that Erwin was still a young man– still clammy over the thought of falling in love with a woman; over wanting a woman for more than what she can offer with her clothes off.
“No man is going to waste his time writing the kinds of words you wrote for a woman he isn’t interested in.”
Erwin had heard enough. He slips Marie’s letter back into one of his father’s leather-bound journals, and quipped back, “Just like how you entertain that woman’s affections as if you can’t die in the next week? As if she isn’t promised to another man? It’s selfish, Derek.”
And although it was never said, Erwin’s frigidity and the muscle jumping from his tightened jaw told Derek exactly what the younger Smith thought—the whole affair would compromise their goal. Their father’s goal.
Derek must remain focused, or else…
And the very thought of any man, even his own brother, gatekeeping his rarest of earthly joys away, infuriated Derek.
How dare he?
How dare anyone?
Not very many people towered over Erwin Smith, but Derek Smith was one of them. And at that very moment, the Scout is perfectly fine with reminding his foolish brother of the fact.
“I’m not about to deprive myself of love and happiness just because I’m a Scout, Erwin. I’m a man. Not a martyr. That woman? That woman keeps me alive. That woman keeps me fighting. Keeps me sane.”
The two men were like a pair of lions prowling each other.
Derek continued, still seething, “With that woman, I’m just Derek. Not Sergeant Smith, not even Derek Smith. Just Derek. Derek and Adeline.”
Much like a mirror image of his own passion and intensity, Erwin took a stand against the unwavering glint in his older brother’s eye. Erwin has seen that very expression on his own face. An expression which said that absolutely nothing could change his mind.
Still, Erwin gambled.
“What about hurting her? You can’t give this poor woman any assurance nor security, Derek! Or is that an occupational hazard too?”
“That’s life.”
~
Derek had just swung up on his steed, ready to gallop out of the Training Corps compound, and back to report in Scouting Legion HQ. Meanwhile, Erwin wordlessly pulled and tugged on Derek’s straps to ensure his brother’s saddle was secure.
It was then that Adeline rushed out from the servants’ steps and into the stables to give her lover a jug of water, as well as the bread and cheese she packed. The two men have been holed up in the Archives Office the entire afternoon, as evidenced by the orange streaks of the already setting sun. The trip back wasn’t very long, but it was just Adeline’s nature to ensure that Derek had more than enough food to fuel him along the way. ‘Besides,’ Adeline thinks, ‘A man that large must need as much food as he can.’
Next to Derek’s great steed, Adeline looked terribly miniscule. Like the afternoon winds could blow her away any moment. Still, after accepting her packed knapsack, Derek reached a large hand down to cup his beloved’s cheek, the purple of her eyes especially accentuated by the fading sun.
‘She really is a sight to behold,’ Derek thinks. He was quiet for a moment, just letting his thumb caress her soft cheek. Drinking her all in, memorizing every detail, as if he would never see her beauty again.
“Take care of yourself, mignonette,” Derek says tenderly.
Adeline smiled in amusement. “Says you.” She kisses the inside of Derek’s palm, and beams up at him, “Come back to me, my love.”
Derek winked. “Always.”
Derek straightened up and pulled on his horse’s reins to settle the beast, then looked down to his brother’s still morose face. He motions to the letter hidden in the journals held by Erwin, and says in goodbye,
“Allow yourself to be happy, brother.”
Then off Derek Smith rode. Dust, dirt, and gravel trailing his horse’s hooves.
The Wings of Freedom fluttering proudly against his back.
~
Erwin and Adeline took a moment to stand by and watch the Scout ride away.
That is, when Adeline’s soft voice broke the silence, “Love doesn’t make him any less of a soldier, Erwin.”
Erwin looked to the small blonde with the delicate curls beside him.
Adeline looked back, purple eyes firm and genuine. “Nor does it make him any less of a son.”
She paused. Doe-like eyes fluttering down for a moment.
“And it’s the same for you.”
It was then that Adeline was struck by how much Erwin resembled her lover. They had the same fire within the depths of their blue eyes. The same brilliant mind beneath their heads of blonde hair. The same imposing build and stature…
The same pride and dignity in their stance.
And yet, the two were so much more different.
Derek was full of tenderness, warmth and joie de vivre, while Erwin… seemed very far away. Like he could never look around him. Just straight ahead. Eyes fixed to the horizon.
But it was that fixation, Adeline knew, which would keep this man alive.
“I’m ending my engagement. I’m choosing your brother, Erwin.” The petite blonde swallowed back a lump in her throat. “No father, nor nobleman can change the course of true love, and—“
Adeline bit her lip. “He’s just so reckless!” she grits out in frustration.
“So please. Convince him to stay, Erwin. Here. With me.” The girl blinked back tears, as she gazed back to the minimizing form of her beloved. “I want to keep him alive. Keep him fighting.”
Keep him alive. Keep him fighting
‘That woman keeps me alive. That woman keeps me fighting.’
It was almost cute to Erwin how the two lovers just repeated each other’s thoughts and words, albeit unknowingly. And so Erwin thought it only fair to repeat to this girl– this woman– who would clearly give up anything for his brother, Derek’s very sentiments.
Erwin reached an arm to wrap around Adeline’s shoulder, and patted her saying, “You’re already keeping him alive and fighting, Adeline”
Eyes still gazing out, the glint of the setting afternoon sun against Derek’s fair head was the last of what Adeline glimpsed of her bold lover.
~
Business was thriving at the Territory that Friday night. Its usual evening assortment of clientele filling up the place with the stench of booze and cigarettes, with guffaws of laughter. All the more made merry by fiddlers the establishment hired to strike up a jig for the patrons. And so besides the usual hullaballoo of the place, drunk men were also prancing around now.
Marie meanwhile, was left breathless. The barmaid grinned merrily as Nile pulled her back up to his chest from their dip. Nile seemed to have the full intention of monopolizing Marie tonight, seeing as they have been dancing and jigging around the bar’s makeshift dancefloor—a cleared floor space, really—since Marie clocked out for her break. Nile promptly bought her a drink, and asked her (albeit drunkenly, seeing as he wouldn’t be able to do so otherwise) for a dance.
Marie was caught up in a fantasy—one where she was a duchess in a glittering ballroom in Mitras, spinning around in a silk dress in the arms of a prince, dancing like they were made of starlight. Like this dingy little bar in the middle of Wall Maria was holy ground.
Although, Marie would never dare admit just who exactly she envisioned to be her prince. Marie rolled her eyes at the thought, ‘she really should just enjoy the dance, and this funny man tossing her around.’
“I’m afraid my dance card’s full, soldier,” Marie teased flirtatiously. Her cheeks were already glowing red, eyes twinkling in mirth from the exertion.
Nile didn’t dare take his hands off Marie’s waist, and most certainly never let his eyes glance away from the ginger’s lovely visage. He grinned delightfully, and pulled the girl even closer, “That so? I reckon you can still squeeze me in for the last twenty minutes of your break, yeah?”
Nile was absolutely over the moon. When Marie started laughing– a tad bit tipsy herself—Nile didn’t even let her finish replying, he heard the lilt of a new dance starting, and immediately twirled the smiling girl towards him. Marie gave a high girlish squeal, and let the soldier sweep her away.
~
Perched by the bar, sat a man whose broad shoulders hunched beneath the influence of whiskey in his system. He took a drag of his cigarette, almost grunting out the smoke, as his blue eyes followed his best friend and the barmaid twirling around the dancefloor. Erwin’s thick eyebrows drew together, grimacing, ‘the bastard actually got her to dance.’
It was certainly rare, but tonight, Erwin is apprehensive. The letter seemed to burn a hole right through his jacket pocket, reminding Erwin of his brother’s final words to him.
Allow yourself to be happy, brother.
So Erwin continued to watch. Knowing full well that this newfound interest Marie had on Nile was thanks to his letters.
His words.
Also knowing full well that he could continue to write this lovely, shining girl in proxy for his friend or…
He could stop. He could stop, and perhaps… this lovely, shining girl could…
Allow yourself to be happy, brother.
Nile gave Marie another dramatic dip, one that had the ginger girl giggling. Nile almost looked silly with glee, as he brought the girl up. And in a moment of what must be drunken ecstasy, Nile kissed Marie’s hand.
Erwin threw back what was left of his whiskey at the sight.
‘Fuck it.’
~
Erwin took one last inhale before putting out his smoke at a nearby ashtray where Marie was already busy wiping down.
Marie felt the blonde man’s presence before she saw him. Could smell the sandalwood before Erwin leaned over into her space. Marie rolled her hazel eyes, although a tiny smile danced around her lips.
Marie refused to look back at this annoying man trying to distract her from work.
“Yeees?”
Erwin playfully presented Marie the letter in between his index and middle fingers, his blue eyes actively looking directly into Marie’s, trying to catch her full attention. Purposefully crowding her, wanting to drown her in all that is him.
“You seemed like you enjoyed your dance.”
Marie finally faced Erwin, a hand moving to rest at her slender waist. She tilted her chin up, trying her best to look as imposing as she can before this tree of man. But not before she registers—definitely not for the first time—just how infuriatingly handsome Erwin Smith is.
“Why? Did you want to join in?”
Marie felt her heart do a little leap and jig at the sight of Erwin’s perfectly cut face falling just that little bit.
Erwin snorted, “With Nile? No thank you, he’s all yours.”
Marie made a show of delicately plucking the letter from between Erwin’s fingertips. She pursed her lips as she read the scrawl at the back of the envelope: For my Marie.
She peeked back up at Erwin. “Hmmm. Seems to me you’re just trying to hide your two left feet.”
“Excuse me?” Erwin cocked an eyebrow, already smiling openly. Marie notes how straight his teeth are.
“I’m an excellent dancer, thank you very much.”
Marie abandons her washcloth, and went up on her tiptoes, getting into Erwin’s face. Something sly and mischievous played around her features.
Erwin could pick up on the alcohol in her breath when she whispered;
“Prove it.”
Glass bottles jingled in their shelves.
The man had brought his large hands down to rest at the liquor shelf behind Marie; effectively caging the girl in his arms.
Marie felt like a rabbit before a wolf. Cornered. Helpless. Frozen.
Felt her heart beating a rapid cadence. Felt her eyes darting between Erwin’s thin, chapped lips, to his hooded blue eyes—darker and deeper beneath the lowlight.
But above all, Marie felt herself wondering if this breathtaking creature would taste like whiskey and cigarettes—like a brooding phantom she could only ever glimpse in dark nights amongst candlelight.
Or perhaps he’d still taste like strawberries? Like sweetness and zest and freedom and hope.
Erwin gently tucked a ginger curl behind Marie’s ear. He caressed her freckled cheek.
Marie was already dizzy from the smell of nicotine off his fingers… or was it something else that was making her dizzy?
Rough pads of fingers pressed against the plumpness of Marie’s lips.
“Then…”
The woman took a deep inhale.
“…Can I have this dance.”
It wasn’t a question. Not when he sounded like that. Like, sin.
In a panic, Marie squeezed her eyes shut; “You’re drunk.”
Erwin blinked. And like a magic spell broken, Erwin releases his hold on the liquor shelf.
Marie’s eyes shot open, as she looked up at a chuckling Erwin. He was already smoothing back the few strands of golden hair that fell onto his eyes.
“I guess I am.”
‘Huh.’ Marie thinks, ‘This odd, odd man. He’s got a knack for immediately switching emotions, alright.’
Erwin must have noticed Marie’s strange look, and jabbed light-heartedly, “You better start working again before Nile notices you ‘aren’t busy’ anymore.”
Nile! Oh god, Marie almost forgot about him! He could’ve seen… whatever that was between her and Erwin.
Marie hastily went back to her washcloth, and started wiping down more glasses. She looked around for any sign of Nile, and found him still drunkenly gloating to Mike about his romp with her.
Although from the looks of it, the man is about a tankard away from completely passing out.
Erwin was already casually lighting another cigarette when,
“Are you a pigeon, Erwin?”
Erwin nearly fucking burned himself from his lighter. He spluttered at the bizarre question.
“Err…no?”
“Then why do you have to keep passing Nile’s letters to me? He’s right there!”
The two looked on to watch Nile finally succumb to sleep. Mike awkwardly patted his already passed-out friend.
Erwin snickered, “I’m afraid that’s why my oaf of a friend calls me his ‘wingman’.”
“Ha!” Marie chuckled out.
~
Marie read her letter immediately after the last of the bar patrons left—which happened to be Erwin. He insisted on keeping her company to ‘keep the wolves away.’ As if he hadn’t just tried cornering her a half hour ago. It was nice though, the conversation was lovely while she was closing up.
And so, when she lay awake in her bed that night, smiling to herself, fingertips on her lips. She wasn’t thinking of Nile when the words of the letter echoed in her head.
A/N:I know. Derek’s an absolute d r e a m b o a t, and I love him too.
Mignonette,’ from my understanding is “delicate” or “darling” in French. I heard that was Prince William’s pet name for Princess Charlotte, and I thought it was adorable.
On Erwin’s family, a discord friend of mine actually gave me the idea that Erwin possibly got his leadership skills and his you-think-this-is-your-idea-but-it-was-all-part-of-erwin’s-fail-safe-plan charm, from his mother. Besides, who doesn’t love a powerful working mom? And the rest went from there! It also made sense to me that a man as curious and as daring as Erwin’s dad would also be a child at heart.
As usual, any questions and feedback are very much welcome!
I also have an AO3!
Welcoming Freshmen Ceremony Headcanons:
In the freshmen welcoming ceremony, the dorm tenants have to wear their coronation robes. But only the dorm leaders go to the throne chamber while the tenants have to make sure the welcoming party goes smoothly.
NOTE: I won’t try to shove a lot of cultural references in here because I lack the full knowledge, so I’ll just take what I need to build the lore and build a fantasy-way around it.
Pommeneige
The dorm prepares a nice warm meal such as potato and sausage stew, apple dumplings, gooseberry pie and apple cider. These dishes are essential to serve because of the princess who served the seven dwarfs the same dish as a sign of gratitude. So the students eat the meal along with the dwarfs who make them selves comfortable at the dinner table, chatting with the students and sometimes playing around.
After eating, the students gather outside and they watch the dwarfs sing and dance. Sometimes the students will be tempted to join in and sing along. Then they share stories about anything they could think of before the day ends.
Glastanzerin
The dorm gathers the tenants to the large dining hall where there’s tea and small cakes to be eaten while they make small talk. The cakes are decorated with fruits coated with nappage glaze.
Afterwards, they are lead to a ballroom where the golden statues of noblemen come to life when the clock strikes 8 pm. The students then dance with the statues or just stand around and chat. The ball ends at midnight where the statues go back to their original positions and become inanimate. once again.
Futterwacken
The dorm will hold a chaotic tea party. They bring out the chocolate fountain that is built with several spouts that are shaped like teapots. The fountain produces about five different syrup flavors, strawberry, chocolate, cream, caramel, and maple syrup. The food they serve is a variety of tarts, waffles and cupcakes that can be decorated using several sprinkles and candies near the fountain. There’s also non-dessert dishes served like scotch dodo egg, mushroom stew and tiny-to-large-sandwiches. The drinks are pink lemonade and minty earl gray tea.
The teapots dance to the tune of the flowers as they sing, Golden Afternoon, where even the shrubs and trees would sway to the tune. The flowers take this chance to leave their pots and dance around the students and sometimes stand on the student’s head.
Rosadormienti
The fairies of the dorm would come out and dance about in the air and give minor blessings to the newcomers that last throughout the school year. The blessings can range from luck to protective spells to even small gifts that carry mysterious properties.
The students then hold acapella shows where they sing popular songs that have the students joining in too.
The dorm isn’t too extravagant with the welcoming ceremony but they have fun nonetheless. When the students are asleep, the flowers release glittering pollen that gives them pleasant dreams and help them relax.
Coquille
The sea creatures and students would attend a musical performance that the upperclassmen would prepare with the dorm leader at the center stage. They do synchronized swimming alongside other sea creatures, they finish it off with the crystal on the roof shining bright.
After the performance, the freshmen students have to show their musical capabilities by doing an idol performance of their song of choice. They can perform solo or with a group if they wish.
Then afterwards is the tour of the dorm where they show them their dorm rooms as well as a special visit to the Pearl Salon.
Chateau Beastiale
The dorm will of course hold a grand feast courtesy of Gustove and his floating plates accompanied by a singing chandelier. The song, “Be Our Guest”, is a song that has been considered a tradition for the furniture to sing. The dishes are a variety of french cuisine and desserts for the students to enjoy.
After the magnificent dinner, the students are allowed to roam about and get acquainted with one another. The freshmen are surprised that they get their own talking wardrobe, the wardrobes spend the first hour talking about what style would the student prefer so that they may do their duty to utmost perfection.
Magiaoasis
The dorm would hold their welcoming feast at the dorm’s large garden area where the flamingos, peacocks and parrots would fly about and do whatever they please, occasionally a parrot or two would fly close to the students to ask for a small snack before flying off. The feast has a large spread of Middle Eastern cuisine such as, manakeesh, shawarma, baklava, and zainab fingers, with coffee and limon ou nana as refreshments.
The feast isn’t too extravagant but the calming atmosphere of the sunset with the sounds of chirping birds makes it feel like home.
Dragonstone
There is a welcoming parade done by the dragons of the dorm, they dance and throw a golden ball around like some sort of game. The climax of the parade is when the ball is thrown high up and it explodes into a bright array of fireworks.
After that, the students eat in the dining hall with the dorm leader giving a welcoming speech. The dinner isn’t filled with dancing or anything, it’s more of lively chatter that paints the image of a large family gathering.
There’s chinese hotpot, dumplings, peking duck, chow mein and wontons as the main course. Chinese snowflake cake, sticky rice cake, accompanied with complimentary fortune cookies for dessert.
Sagamore
The dorm is more of a less grand impression but it involves students given the reminder of the harmony with the land and it’s gifts. The saying, take only what you need and nothing more. There is a table filled with plenty of food such as, roasted turnips and winter squash, turkey with berry-mint sauce, and chia pudding with berries and amaranth for dessert. But they don’t eat yet, they have to wait for the dorm leader to hunt one bison for the bison pot roast.
The dorm leader goes to hunt for a bison but there is a strict rule that the dorm leader follows if she hunts for a bison, do not kill a female or a baby bison, and the leader of the herd must be left alone. Only hunt a male that isn’t a leader, the bisons in this world have certain features that determine the leader such as large horns and a magical rune that symbolizes leader on it’s body.
When the dorm leader returns with a bison, the students the have the freshmen help with the preparation of cooking the bison pot roast. From there, the dorm leader gives thanks to the blessings of the earth and they tell stories while they eat.
Lagniappe
The dorm will always start with a jazz band playing classic jazz music or jazz covers. There’s dancing and singing in the dorm, the fireflies circle around the boat as the students party.
Of course there’s going to be food! The famous Gumbo made by the historical figure is to die for, beignets, jambalaya and king cake. Every dish made has to be followed accordingly to the recipes of the princess and the way she did it.
Afterwards, the fireflies disperse and put on a light show for them. The animals in the swamp emerge as if to welcome the new students to the dorm. The frogs jump aboard the boat and stick close to the students as if they want to watch the show with them, this is a normal occurrence so the students are reminded to keep in mind of the frogs.
Grounding Methods
Tumblr media
Grounding is the ability to shake off excess energy and ground yourself in the here and now, back within the flow of energy we exist in after you’ve completed a magical task. This is particularly pertinent to working with dreams, spirits or trance work. Here are some methods you can use separately or in tandem with each other. 1. Be barefoot in nature - the beach, a field, a swamp, the woods, a quiet park. Be in the presence of nature and the life thriving around you. Maintain this practice daily if you can. Touch other organisms you feel energy vibrating from. Feel the Earth’s natural current conducting through your bare feet. 2. Bring your attention to the present moment and do a body scan, from the top of your head to the tip of your toes. Divert any mental chatter and take note of every feeling you can identify without judgement. Close your eyes if you need to. Take your time and be thorough. Once you’ve made a strong connection with your body, take a look around you and begin a mental list of the things around you. Pick things up and take a detailed account of how they feel. Run cold water over your hands, eat a fruit, listen to gentle music. Describe the sensations, flavors, smells, feelings you experience to yourself as you do this. 3. When we share space with minerals, our frequencies merge with that mineral. Carrying crystals, stones, gems or minerals with grounding frequencies, in our pocket, on jewelry, under your pillow, etc. will help maintain a grounded energy. Some examples are: -Hematite -Smoky quartz -Obsidian -Onyx -Black Tourmaline -Pyrite -Ruby -Tiger’s Eye -Iron -Red Coral -Black opal 4. Balance your chakras by matching a crystal of a corresponding frequency and color to that of a specific chakra. Lay down and place the crystal on your body. Perhaps put on some soothing music and meditate for however long you need. A list of the chakras and their correspondences can be found (here.) 5. Take a salt bath. Not only is salt a great medicinal healing tool, it’s also deeply purifying. Add 1-2 cups of sea salt to a warm bath, add your favorite skin safe essential oil, burn a corresponding candle or lay out corresponding crystals. If you don’t have time for a bath, keep some homemade sea salt scrubs on hand for a quick rinse in the shower; keep these recipes in your spell book! Not only will the salt clear negative energies, it will also leave your skin feeling smooth!
Okay here’s the whole entire text of my original pokemon gen concept under a cut (sorry if that screws you up on mobile)
Tumblr media
I’ve only ever sketched a tiny number of these (like my fly ideas here), but I can see most of them in my head pretty clearly and might sketch more of them by request someday. I originally set my fan-region in Florida, a place I hated living but still had a lot of interesting characteristics. This changed over once I moved to Oregon, and the thing about Oregon is that it has desert, forest, swamp, coastline and frozen mountaintops that are all pretty vast, ancient and in places relatively untouched compared to the rest of North America. This is not only a perfect setting for some really wild pokemon, but makes a believable choice because our Pacific Northwest is pretty popular in Japan.
The different biomes of this region have "deep" areas where the pokemon change. Some also have "polluted" areas. The region is environmentally themed and heavily deals with human interference on the natural world.
The villains are Team Bio, genetic engineerers lead by a mysterious old woman who narrowly survived the original Mewtwo experiment. Her underlings all use "mutant" pokemon, and she seeks to create a new species of hyper-intelligent, pure-hearted pokemon that will replace humans entirely. Along the way is a strange increase in reports of interstellar pokemon activity... I actually tried hard to minimize how many pokemon in this are just “my kind” of concept, but I think I failed pretty hard. It probably does feel like it leans a little more towards Mortasheen than something Pokemon would actually make, but for basically every pokemon that’s one of my “dream concepts” or “most wanted” I tried to come up with one that I thought would appeal more to somebody else’s taste than mine.
THE STARTERS
Grass Starter: a grass "lumberjack" pterosaur with an axe for a beak. Second stage has more saw-like beak, final stage is a grass/steel quetzalcoatlus (the pterosaur) with a beak and crest forming a chainsaw, no longer flies
Fire type calf whose black cow marks are actually soot. Evolves into cow with craggy black “helmet” and horns of charcoal. Final stage a charcoal-armored minotaur like fire/ground type.
Water Starter is a beady-eyed water shrew with big webbed flipper feet, known to steal shiny objects. Second stage more humanoid, said to dive for treasure. Final stage is water/dark lanky, stripey shrew with a black mask, said to rob boats like a “highwayman” of the river.
Meadows and forest:
Normal type mammal is a spherical porcupine, like a chestnut. Rubs its spines with noxious fruit juices, giving it a multicolored look. Evolved form is a colorful “punk” porcupine.
Early bug is a sticklike inchworm Evolves to cocoon resembling a wooden log on top. Final form is bipedal stick mimic grasshopper, evocative of a cute wooden puppet with a pointed nose.
Basic bird is a hummingbird Evolves to be four-winged and legless, never lands in its whole life. Final hummingbird is a fierce looking hunter that drains energy from grass types like a predator.
Grass type walking bud creature, looks nervous. Evolves to grass/flying orchid-like angelic flower. Alternate evolution is wilted, grey, grass/ghost goth orchid with tattered petals, cute but sad. (evolves this way if it levels up after a battle in which it sustained super-effective damage)
Ground type earthworm sticking out of dirt, cute flower-shaped head. Evolved worm looks like shark sticking out of the dirt, nose looks like its prevo
Electric/dark pikachu-like packrat holding a large coin. Electrically charges its treasure as a booby trap. Actually said to be employed as underlings by the water-type shrew starter.
MISCELLANY:
Bug/poison type grub with fangs. Only encountered in garbage cans. Evolves into a fly pupa Final stage is a gloomy looking, drooling anthropomorphic fly.
Single stage bug/fairy type: a beautiful Maleficent-looking parasitoid wasp. Evolves from any cocoon/pupa pokemon if they're holding a "suspicious egg" item.
Ocean
Water/grass nudibranch with flower on its back. Evolves to a glaucus, each "arm" a colorful flower that absorbs sunlight as it floats.
Water type fish that "sails" on the sea's surface with its fins. Sleepy looking stingray evolution. Final form is water/dragon deep sea fish, combines some traits of anglerfish and viperfish with eyes on stalks. Only evolves from stingray when you're in the sea trench.
Water/flying marlin with huge, dazzling butterfly like fins.
Water type baby dolphin, fuzzy like a seal pup, only evolves if it has fainted more times than the number of its current level. Evolved form is water/dark, shaggy-furred, fierce looking, battle scarred dolphin with legs instead of flippers, a throwback to the doglike ancestors of delphinidae.
Polluted inlet
Water/poison oil slick with two tentacles and beady white eyes, signature ability changes it to water/fire type if it uses a fire move. Evolved form is an oil slick rising into a cartoon octopus with x's for pupils.
Water/steel fish hook with tiny head and eyes, like a barbed metal worm. Water/steel fishing jig, googly eyes and everything.
Barren Island - just a very big rock in the middle of the inlet
Ghost/poison: a greenish "dodo bird" with a face like a biohazard mask, the ghost of a species that went exinct due to sickness.
Sea Trench
Water/fire bristleworm "snake" Water/fire tube worm "dragon"
Water/ghost wailord skeleton draped in pink fuzz and a garden of one-eyed bone worms.
Swamp
Electric/flying bird resembling a lightbulb kiwi. Evolved form resembling a neon light lawn flamingo.
Grass/fairy giant sloth with sleepy face, completely covered in shaggy moss with various flowers and mushrooms. Protector of the swamp, able to control plant life.
Grass/psychic sundew, just a pair of sundew leaves atop a sleepy looking oddish-esque bulb. Evolved sundew is mostly a big circular sundew rosette, but a humanoid flower rotates in the center like a music box to lure prey.
Water/fighting borzoi pup with long legs, acts like a water strider. Evolved form is an elongated, elegant borzoi "ballerina" that dances atop water
Water/ground red leech slightly evocative of a vacuum cleaner. A healer that sucks poison from the body instead of blood. May mysteriously appear in your team after walking through swamp water.
Deep Forest:
Grass/ground banana slug with colorful mold spots, learns spore. Evolves into mold splotched, brown banana peel creature, more like a big squid.
Grass/dark autumn leaf in the shape of a bat, has levitate. Evolved form redder, bigger "vampire cape" leaf-bat.
Psychic/ghost cheshire cat with Meowth-like proportions, bright crescent smile. Evolved form just huge smile and cat eyes hovering in the air, beastly cat body fading into view only for physical attacks or when struck.
Rock type humanoid made of transparent amber with a strange mayfly-like bug sleeping inside. Outer body can "break" at low HP and release faster, more offensive pure bug form.
Rock: incredibly huge, stony looking moose with long white fur draped over its eyes and back. Comes in size variations like Pumpkaboo line and said to never stop growing. A truly titanic one is used as transportation through the deep forest.
Snowy patches
Bug/ice velvet worm that spews a freezing liquid. Silly looking, almost like wiggler from mario.
Ice/flying fluffy white bird resembling a tiny Japanese style snowman. Evolves to resemble western style snowman with clawed bird feet, pointed beak nose. A flightless pure ice mountain dweller.
Electric/ice with levitate: a crystalline "UFO" sky-jellyfish with many colorful lights, core body looks like a cute pikmin-esque "alien" inside. Catch by fishing off of ledges into the sky. Mistaken by locals for alien activity.
Lava Tube Caves
Psychic type bipedal pink salamander with no eyes. Evolves into beautiful milotic-like psychic/dragon blind olm.
Rock/fighting spearhead with feet, eyes are just round holes through blade. Evolves to gain a stick-figure sort of body.
Abandoned town
Normal/bug filthy dog, a shaggy pile of fur with goofy eyes and pink tongue. Little black specks jump about it. Ability changes normal moves to bug moves. Evolved form more obviously a dog but still very shaggy, surrounded by constant cloud of black specks.
Grass/electric "christmas tree" made of holly and lights. Found in a burned down house, glowing eyes peer out from beneath it.
Ghost: has a colorful quilt for a body and a pincushion for a head. Found inside houses.
Garbage dump - accessible through abandoned town, possibly what drove people away (includes piles of toys you may investigate to encounter a banette, mimikyu or klefki)
Water/poison: cartoony fish with blank eyes and humanoid pair of legs. Fish for in toxic green garbage pools. Evolves into ground/poison skeleton fish with four limbs, walking like a lizard.
Steel/bug rusty orange silverfish. Eats junk metal. Evolved form so big it wears a rusty car for protection with just its legs and feelers sticking out.
MICROPOKEMON - enlarged artificially in a laboratory where you can also take your fossils.
Bug/fighting flea - spiny black flea with big jagged white teeth. Create from the "pest sample" an item carried randomly by the normal/bug dog.
Poison/fairy germ - fuzzy multicolored mold ball with eyes, stalked suckers. Retrieve "germ sample" from the dodo ghost.
Rock type baby gargoyle creature. Evolves to winged gargoyle with levitate and a few mossy patches. Final form is an elegant griffon-like rock/dragon with an elaborately carved surface
SPACE ARK DRAGON This location is itself a dragon/fairy legendary pokemon so massive you can enter its body. It exists to collect and preserve species from dying worlds. Most common wild pokemon inside is duosion and sometimes Reuniclus. You can also collect "gene samples" from crystalline pods to replicate the ultrabeasts in the same lab you enlarge the microbes and resurrect fossils.
Bug/dark parasitic alien, a little like weird yellow plant suckered to the ground, red flower-like head with an eye on each petal ala the yokai parasite, gyochu.
Bug/dark parasitic alien, a colorful worm with cute eyes and beautiful mothlike wings, a little like the yokai parasite koshi-no-mushi.
Bug/dark parasitic alien, a pale, red and white striped "lizard" with six spindly limbs and a tubular proboscis, inspired by the yokai parasite kagemushi.
Fairy type alien medic, looks like a cute flatwoods monster with heart motif and nurse coat. Flees from all battles unless you have defeated at least one of each of the parasites.
LEGENDARIES:
Dragon/electric: the ark dragon's smaller offspring, looks like an electronic space whale.
Dragon/steel, menacing, sleek black starship creature. Rival to the ark dragon, a "world reaper" that attempts to destroy planets that it thinks are already dying.
Psychic/fairy little white, fluffy mothman-like being, an observer that casts judgment on suffering worlds to call one of the dragons (version based)
Normal type legendary is the most human-like pokemon we've ever seen, a serene floating figure with long hair and black, almond-shaped eyes. A genetic experiment to supplant humans.
Electric/fighting: a hulking humanoid beast, almost frankensteinian with asymmetrical features, a failed early experiment.
A "glitched and scrambled" two dimensional pokemon. The result of the earliest known experiments in digital pokemon transfer. Actually literally typeless.
Mutant Zubat - Psychic - somewhat larger than crobat, has actual legs and a pair of clawed arms instead of wings. Much bigger ears.
Mutant Voltorb - electric/steel - a Voltorb even bigger than Electrode, otherwise looks normal besides angrier yellow eyes...until it splits open to reveal sharp teeth.
Mutant Doduo - fighting type with only one head
Mutant Luvdisc - the only one based on a non-evolving pokemon. Angry "broken heart" Luvdisc with record offensive stats for the series, but even worse defenses than regular luvdisc.
Mutant Trapinch - dragon/bug - giant turtle-like Trapinch, redder, spiny, second mouth inside jaws.
Mutant Dratini - dragon/fairy - huge long dratini with longer feathery wing ears, identical wings down body.
Mutant Larvitar - dragon/dark - big, armored green reptile, still has larvitar type head with craggier, meaner horn.
Mutant Bagon - dragon - huge, more t-rex proportioned bagon, spiked shell on head.
Mutant Deino - bigger and shaggier with a ring of five long-necked deino heads
Mutant Gible - dragon/fighting - only usually seen as a huge sharky fin sticking out of the ground. When it emerges, its body isn't much bigger than regular gible.
Mutant Goomy - psychic/dragon - giant goomy with gaping mouth, antennae are much longer, green and stripey.
Mutant Jangmo-o - dragon/steel - same old head but more ankylosaur-like big body, entirely a dark iron color with more pitted looking scales.
ENVIRONMENTAL VARIATIONS no mechanical or typing difference, but new color schemes and decorations on existing pokemon, totally an aesthetic change. Have their own shiny forms.
SEA TRENCH FORMS: Entirely pale pink golisopod line with closed eyes transparent red tentacool line with darker red nodules dark maroon inkay line with blue lights red and purple feebas line
CAVE FORMS: White, eyeless venipede line White, eyeless magikarp line
DEEP SWAMP FORMS: crocodile-green Sandile line with lily pad on head black shelled "freshwater" shellder line with green algae growths pure red and purple colored bellsprout line
DEEP FOREST FORMS: braviary with more hawklike colors foongus line with no pokeball pattern...the original foongus? wolf-spider colored joltik line
POLLUTED INLET FORMS: Dewpider line with all black body and limbs, yellow glowing eyes in dirty green water Grey wailmer line draped in red algae, clumps of barnacles (presumably degenerated binacle) Wingull line with grey and black oil-splotched feathers, tin can on head
GARBAGE DUMP FORMS: Bounsweet line with only grey, brown and black colors, dark spoiled looking splotches Black bag trubbish line with green trash, copper colored pipes Rusted looking klink line, rotates only once every few seconds.
----------GYM LEADERS -------------- In this region the gyms are dual type, and bring back past mechanics and gimmicks as their focus.
flying/normal: a blind, wheelchair-bound old man who specializes in dog and bird pokemon. Uses a baton pass team.
Steel/electric: an astronaut commanding his gym by remote feed from the station. Uses Magnezone, Rotom forms and, surprisingly, a random steel or electric ultrabeast.
Poison/bug: a germophobic lady scientist ironically obsessed with pollution pokemon, always wearing a biohazard suit. Has weezing, garbodor, the fly pokemon and Yanmega. Uses Z-moves, but it's random whether she uses a bug or poison one and on which pokemon.
Dark/fire: an elderly biker lady. Has no gym and in fact roams around the region. Surprisingly challenges you to a third-gen style beauty contest with her frightening selection of pokemon.
Grass/fairy: witchy pharmacist and botanist who lives out in the woods, all of her grass types are mushroom based. Unusually has you team up with her in a double battle against a random pokemon of unusual size and strength, like Alola's totem pokemon.
Ground/fighting: an extremely frail little nerdy guy who likes amazingly fearsome pokemon, hates bullies but kind of is one. Makes you face a horde battle with all of his pokemon vs. only one of yours at a time.
Dragon/rock: a boisterous monster movie director who dresses his pokemon in costumes, gym is a cardboard city. Uses a dynamaxed pokemon.
Ghost/psychic: a horror author, Vincent Price like, lives in a mansion and makes visitors face scenes from his books. Instead of a single battle, he has you face a series of singular mega pokemon behind each "scene." THE LABORATORY This location is of course secretly associated with the villain team, but you can free it up from them in the endgame. Here you can make fossil pokemon, micropokemon, regional forms from past generations, ultrabeasts and even mega stones, but all require you to spend one or more “gene crystals.” You’re handed a number of these through the storyline but it would be very challenging to farm more than that  (think Gen 7 bottlecaps). Spending more crystals at the lab would allow you to finally alter abilities, natures and IV’s at a whim, and for an exceptional cost you could upgrade the BASE stats of any L100 pokemon permanently. This is a percentage increase applied across the board to all of its stats at once, and stops at either 100 total points beyond their normal limits, or a final base stat total of 530 (equivalent to a fully evolved starter) MISC STUFF:
Your mom this gen asks you if you hope to have an easy, challenging, or very challenging adventure. You can return to her at any time to adjust the difficulty again.
When you beat the game, you can make a custom trainer for online battles using the models of other NPC trainer types, i.e. you can finally be a swimmer/scientist/grunt/etc. You can unlock some popular ones from past generations.
You can select one pokemon as your main partner, which not only has it following you, but involves it a little more in the storyline (special events based on its first typing) and gives it some in-game perks.
A special item attached to any one of your pokemon allows your whole team to “share strength,” meaning that their weaknesses are mitigated for each teammate they share a type with. This allows for type-themed teams to be more viable but wouldn’t completely eliminate their weaknesses, and the effect diminishes proportionately for every pokemon that faints.
You can designate a seventh pokemon to be your “team mascot,” a non-combat role with different effects depending on species/type.
A single team can have either the mascot, a z-move, a dynamax/gigantamax form or a mega, cannot mix these.
Legendary pokemon now suffer a stat nerf for every other legendary pokemon on the same team. A team of six legendaries would actually be somewhat below-average in stats.
"Pittoo?"
A dream. A bad, horrible, dreadful, unthinkable dream, that's what it was. After all, it was too improbable to be the real deal, wasn't it? To see that insufferable mouth sealed shut, a deep crimson staining his lips; those blue eyes which always sparkled with energy and life gazing blankly to the sky.
"Pittoo? What's the situation? Where is Pit?"
I'm wondering that too, he thought, slipping a hand under dampened hair and lifting his head from where it fell into the shallows. Pit's laurel crown was buried in the pond's muck; Dark Pit pulled it free with his other hand and replaced it where it belonged.
"I'm coming down there to check on you. Don't move, especially if you're badly injured; you can bleed out."
Blood… That was a funny thing. Humans bled profusely when struck by divine weaponry. That blood was almost scalding until it began to cool against the lukewarm swamp water, and it congealed at Dark Pit's ankles where they rested at the shoreline. The shadow of his Silver Bow fell over them from where it stood impaled in a soldier's chest with the setting sun's rays falling over them in gentle reds and purples. His hands began shaking and his vision blurred with tears.
"Pit…you…damn…idiot," he whispered, bowing his head against the original's. His whole body was shaking and he couldn't stop it. Maybe it was compensating for his original, who could no longer tremble in fear. "Fucking…idiot…why did you…why did you even…don't you know…?"
A soft musical tone began behind him before something fell into the mud. Palutena gave a surprised cry, then she said tentatively, "Dark Pit? Are you alright?"
That was it. Those words severed the last bits of self-control Dark Pit held. The Goddess of Light asked if he was alright, and he was. I'm alright, he thought as tears poured down his cheeks and dripped onto Pit's face, cutting through the caked-on grime. His shoulders bowed and he gritted his teeth against the wails erupting from his throat.
I'm alright because your stupid angel gave his life for a copy.
There were a lot of tears shed in the heavens for the next week. Palutena did most of the crying, albeit out of sight, but Dark Pit could hear her moans in the middle of the night. Viridi saved hers until the golden tablet was placed over Pit's mouth, and Dark Pit turned to see her staring with wide and wet eyes. Phosphora retreated once his body was buried among the grass and fields, her cheeks already glistening, and Phos and Lux brayed in mourning.
Dark Pit had no tears left, but he made sure the Palutena Bow was clenched in Pit's hands before he went under. In case Hades tried to screw with him in the afterlife…or so his justification went. Mostly it made his heart ache to see the blades even after the human blood was meticulously scrubbed away.
"What happened?" Palutena's voice was soft and motherly as it always was, no trace of accusation there, but Dark Pit felt like sinking into the deepest hole anyway. He averted his eyes and stared at his fingers wrapped around the grip of his Silver Bow.
"It was a human army versus Hades' army running 10:1. The humans had the advantage, but the dark energy produced by the monsters made them wilder, more unpredictable." He spoke in a detached voice that kept him grounded; he stated the facts as telling a story, not reliving the worst day of his short life. "Not only did we have to fight back the monsters, we had to save them from themselves. Pit did, and he tried his damn hardest like always. Didn't let a single human die."
Not a human died. Not one human died under Pit's watch.
"And then?" Viridi, standing off to the side, looked on with an unreadable expression as Dark Pit's fingers tightened. He fought the urge to retreat into himself.
"One of the humans snuck up on me." Stupid him for not sensing the man's presence. Stupid him for being so slow to react. Stupid him for— "Pit covered me. A—…And it was the last thing he did."
She should have shouted at him. He wanted her to rebuke him for the worst mistake of his short life. Instead, she sighed and gave a little chuckle. "Heh. That's our stupid angel, alright."
He wasn't proud of it, but he took the holy weapon forged by the Goddess of Light and speared the human through the heart. He shoved the blades in with so much force that several ribs were also broken on impact, and the momentum carried the grown man deep into the dirt. He wasn't proud of it because he knew Pit would hate his weapon being sullied like that, even if it was in his name. Especially because it was in the name of revenge.
Pit suffered a painless death; before he hit the ground, he was gone, the sword's handle still protruding from his back like some sick joke. Dark Pit removed it with the utmost care and set him down in a more comfortable position, as if such a thing mattered in death, before taking up the Silver Bow. He couldn't recall much of what transpired after—it remained a stubborn blur in his mind to date—but his memories afterwards began with him standing amidst a sea of carnage. The Underworld Army, of course, left no trace, but human corpses decorated the ground around him.
He couldn't bring himself to care.
Subsequently, he spent a lot of time in Skyworld, ignoring Viridi's calls to lounge around in Pit's old hangout spots. He had a private hot spring not far from his quarters, shaded by white marble pillars holding up an arched roof and surrounded by lush green grass and wildflowers. Dark Pit enjoyed sitting at the shore, nude ankles submerged in the warm golden water.
"Viridi was asking about you." The grass crunched behind him before Palutena sat primly beside him, legs folded and dress fanning out around her. Dark Pit kept his gaze on the small waves.
"Viridi has hordes of acolytes to do her dirty work. I'm allowed to take a break. Let them scare off whatever human stepped on a sapling this time."
"That's not what she was asking about." Palutena's delicate hand landed atop his on the grass; he quickly pulled it away and she didn't react. "She and the rest of us are concerned. No one was closer in mind and spirit as you to Pit."
"Well don't be concerned. I'm fine." He spat the word like bitter poison, not at all helping his case, but he hated it. Hated being treated like paper, hated knowing Pit died for a stupid copy, hated knowing the only person who related to him in the world was gone and he was alone, would live alone for an angel's long long life and die alone…
"I didn't say you weren't," she said smoothly, "but that doesn't make me any less concerned for you. I care about you, Pittoo. And by the way, you've been brooding in this spot for five hours—that's not what fine people do."
"So what if I have been brooding? Aren't I allowed to grieve in my own way? You've been moaning up a storm like a ghost." He could hear her affronted gasp. "You may have been Pit's goddess, but I am not Pit. You don't need to give me your concern, nor do I need it. The only thing I need is for you to let me be, Palutena."
"…As you wish, then. But you know where to find me." She stood up, dusted herself off, and with a smile in Dark Pit's direction, she took her leave.
"The same goes for you, Viridi."
Puh-lease, Viridi said, voice echoing out from his fibula. The tough guy act may work on Palutena, but not on me. You're hurting.
"Aren't we all? Leave me alone."
Fine then. Don't do anything stupid. And she left with a poignant huff.
"Don't do anything stupid, huh…" He chuckled mirthlessly. His stupid acts only happened around Pit, though another person would call them selfless. Things like helping him fight the Chaos Kin to revive Palutena, and journeying to Hell to save Pit's life, destroying the gates to the Underworld and helping to weaken Hades. Yeah, when it came to Pit, he didn't think too rationally, and only now when it was too late to say so, he realized it was more than just an obligation to the "original." He cared deeply for Pit…and now he was gone forever.
"Dammit!" he roared, kicking the water at his feet. His reflection distorted before resettling, revealing the tear tracks running from his scarlet eyes. He hissed and threw an arm over his face, falling back onto the grass. "Stupid, stupid, why did he take that hit, why did he have to die…?"
He took longer than he wanted to calm down, and when he finally sat up again he felt drained, physically and emotionally. He knelt and lowered his face to the water, splashing the warmth across his splotchy cheeks to clean them up. He sighed when the soppy feeling left and glared down into his puffy-eyed reflection.
"Just a stupid reflection, is all I am…why did he have to—"
Dark Pit stopped cold and stared harder, digging his fingers into the soft dirt. "I'm a reflection," he breathed, eyes wide. An imperfect one, but a reflection nonetheless. If he could look into the Mirror of Truth again, another opposite would be created—a Pit would be created. It would fix everything!
But the Mirror was shattered when he was "born." He clearly remembered shattering it. But…but…Pandora had been revived in the Rewind Spring as Amazon Pandora. If she was still hanging around, perhaps she created another Mirror. It was a hell of a long shot, but honestly, what else did he have to lose?
The issue was locating her now. He would have to ask around on the surface, preferably not where they were last time. If only he had a contact…suddenly, Dark Pit recalled a story Pit told him of a human associate. Perhaps he did have a contact?
Vigor renewed, Dark Pit yanked on his sandals and raced to the edge of Skyworld, throwing himself into the cold clouds below. "Viridi, grant me the Power of Flight!" he shouted.
Someone's pushy about it, she grumbled, but her earthen energy filled him all the same. Where's the fire, angel boy?
He ignored her and folded his wings back in a dive, cutting through the air like a spear and towards the mountainous ground. Here's hoping he wasn't getting his spirit worked up for nothing.
In an out of the way town that reeked of danger and blood, Dark Pit walked into a bar. The decidedly unfriendly looking patrons turned to sneer at him, but his responding glare turned them right back around. He had eyes only for the broad leather-clad back sitting at the bar counter.
"Magnus?"
Said back turned, revealing a scruffy middle-aged human holding a cup of ale. He looked Dark Pit up and down and remarked, "Unless you've turned emo since I last saw you, which I somehow doubt, you must not be Pit?"
"Dark Pit," he said. "Pit has…Pit died in battle."
Magnus' previously lax expression turned blank, then he raised his ale. "Here's to him, then." He slammed back the alcohol and dropped the cup on the counter. "Terrible thing. That kid had a lot of fire."
"He did. Which is why I want to bring him back. Have you heard anything about Pandora?" Magnus raised an eyebrow.
"The goddess Pandora, I'm assuming? Yeah, I've heard a few things here and there." Dark Pit took a seat next to Magnus and waved down the bartender, holding up two fingers. The bartender set two glasses of ale down for each of them. Magnus looked on curiously as Dark Pit downed it in one gulp. "You two aren't the same, that's for sure," he remarked.
"Well, spill what you know."
"Normally I'd charge for my information, but call it a freebie for an old friend." Magnus took a few swallows before speaking again. "Heard she was seen on the outskirts of that huge forest where the town was, way up north."
Reset Bomb Forest. Viridi didn't keep tabs of the area anymore, so it was reasonable to assume Pandora was hiding out there. Dark Pit slapped down a few coins and slid off the stool.
"Thanks. I'll be heading out."
"One more thing." Magnus finished his ale and levelled a sober look at the dark angel. "Whatever you got in mind, don't let it be the death of ya. I barely knew angel-face and I could tell ya, he wouldn't like that."
"Trust me," Dark Pit muttered, turning away and sidling to the door, "I know."
Outside he took to the sky in one big leap. He had already used his Power of Flight, but this time the winds were in his favor; he glided across the small dilapidated buildings until they turned to naked rock, then lush pink foliage. He flapped his wings to gain some altitude as purple crystals jutted from the earth like spears, but very soon he was forced to land. The thick forestry cut the wind and he could glide no farther.
The forest was so thick only the barest lines of sun made it through; it was all he could do to see his own two feet as he fought not to trip and fall on a bed of random barbs…again.
"The things I do for this angel," he grumbled, picking a thorn out of his cheek. He tried not to think too hard about what he was doing, because then doubts would surface. What if the Mirror didn't work? What if there was no Mirror? What if he looked into it and nothing came, because…what if he didn't have a soul? He waved the thoughts away and moved a little faster, stumbling over a gnarled branch.
"Hey Pittoo, guess what?"
"Buzz off," Pittoo grumbled, not opening his eyes. "And don't call me that."
"It's my birthday!" Pit continued undaunted.
"Great. So what?"
Dark Pit was grabbed around the shoulders and pulled up from his lounging position. He growled and opened his eyes, watching Pit prance excitedly around on the green grass, wings stretched high and flapping madly. "Think about it," he said with a wide grin, coming to a stop a few feet away.
"The only thing I'm thinking about is kicking your ass and continuing my nap."
"Come on, don't you get tired of being a grouch all the time? Well anyway, this'll cheer you up." Pit suddenly thrust a messily wrapped brown package in Dark Pit's face. He took it with no small measure of confusion.
"Um. Thanks? What?"
"It's my birthday," Pit repeated, "and since you're me, it's your birthday to. So…happy birthday!"
Pittoo was absolutely floored and watched Pit gesture excitedly at the present. Haltingly, he pulled apart the thin paper to reveal a small cardboard box. He pulled the lid off and saw a small doll that sort of looked like him if he squinted. "Did you…make this?"
"Yeah. Um, I'm not too good at knitting, but Lady Palutena said it's the thought that counts." He laughed awkwardly and rubbed his neck. "And, uh, it's filled with your and my feathers? I'm thinking about it now and it seems a little creepy…"
"No, it's…uh…" He ducked his head a little to hide the flush creeping up his neck. "Um. Thanks, Pit."
Dark Pit gritted his teeth. That doll was still in his little alcove in Viridi's world. When he revived Pit—because he definitely would—he would come up with something equally as nice to give him.
He heard the faint sound of mumbling and picked up the pace as much as he could, flapping his wings to get the slightest bit above ground. He felt like a damn chicken without the Power of Flight.
He felt a thick branch sloping upwards and scaled up, avoiding the little thorns until it begins to level out. He peered through a break in the violet leaves and saw one of the old human structures, a large two storied building with crumbling walls interwoven by thick branches and curling ivy. Sunlight shone through the canopy above and coalesced on something at the tip of the structure.
"Why is Hades ignoring me now? Stupid bloathead," Pandora was saying as her back floated into view. Dark Pit leaned forward with a grimace. "I thought we had a nice thing going…and the Hearts he paid me were delightful." She rose higher to the ceiling of the building and glanced his way; he ducked his head. "Well, at least I managed to create this beautiful Mirror."
Mirror!
He leapt through the leaves and into the clearing. Pandora spun around and her face twisted in anger. "You stupid angel, you aren't shattering my Mirror a second time!"
He scanned the area until he spotted the Mirror on top of the building. The frame was made of twisted branches and the glass was reflecting the sunlight from the open canopy. He just needed to look into it and—
He dodged to the side as one of Pandora's heart missiles struck the ground where he was standing. He whipped out the Silver Bow and fired a volley of arrows; she twirled and vanished, avoiding the attack before reappearing above his head and dropping a large purple bomb. He fired an arrow and the explosion released a cloud of pink smoke, obscuring his vision.
"The last I heard, the cuter angel kicked the bucket. Is that true?"
Dark Pit growled and spun, not before taking a kick to the shoulder and falling in the dirt. He rolled out of the way of another projectile and to his feet, jumping above the smokescreen and onto a beam jutting from the building. Just one look, just one look and everything will be fine—
"No, don't look in the Mirror!" Pandora launched another heart right at the glass, then her eyes widened in shock. He was still too far, he had to stop it somehow; he couldn't let her shatter the mirror!
"No—!" Dark Pit launched himself in the air and intercepted the projectile, which slammed him in the gut like one of Pit's clubs. The air left his lungs in a pained gasp and his wings seized up, leaving only his momentum carrying him backwards into the Mirror of Truth. He felt the coldness of the glass for a mere moment before it shattered against his back, peppering his skin with tiny shards. He fell through the emptied frame and to the hard-packed dirt below.
"No…no!" He shot into a sitting position, eyes wide as he beheld the frame full of broken shards. Tears welled in the corners of his eyes and his fists balled against his aching stomach. "D—Dammit…!"
Plunk.
"What? No!" Pandora's disbelieving shriek caught his attention. He looked past her floating form to the source of her ire…a small white-clothed form balled on the ground. Could it be…no…no, it had to be.
Pain forgotten, Dark Pit lurched to his feet and leapt forward, past the enraged goddess and to the prone form in the dirt. Pit was exactly as he had been, down to the untamed bedhead, though he was completely unconscious. A relieved, borderline dopey smile crossed Dark Pit's face, and tears did run down his cheeks, happy ones. He lifted Pit's face to press their foreheads together.
You're back…
Pandora's continued screams reminded Dark Pit there was an urgent matter to attend to. Glancing around, he quickly spotted his Silver Bow poking out from the mud nearby. He threw himself into a roll and snatched it up, notching an arrow and taking aim at Pandora. She looked down at him with an expression of pure fury.
"Do you know how hard I worked to revive that Mirror? You're dead!" She sent a flurry of purple hearts towards him and he released his arrow into the center of the storm before taking to the air. Pandora disappeared with a twirl and Dark Pit didn't have time to react before a slim hand latched around his neck. Her momentum carried him backwards into a pile of brambles; the thorns tore into his back and he gritted his teeth against the scream of pain that wanted to rise.
"You're the one who will die, Pandora." He broke the bow into swords and cut her hand at the wrist. She pulled away with a scream, her handless wrist streaming golden ichor, her wristless hand dripping onto Dark Pit's clothes like acid. He tore the hand away and righted himself, landing on his toes on a branch and launching himself up again. Pandora pulled her unharmed arm back for an attack and he tossed the sword like a knife. Another shield appeared, and her expression turned panicked when he broke the shield with his body, jabbing the remaining sword into her gut.
They fell back to earth and her face was frozen in shock even in her death. He leapt backwards before her body melted into ichor, scoffing quietly before turning to Pit. He hadn't moved and Dark Pit couldn't hide his concern. Collecting the Silver Bow, he returned to Pit's body and cradled him to his chest. "Palutena?" he called.
"Dark Pit, what's going on?"
"Take me to Skyworld, please."
She hesitated and he heard her swallow. A…Alright. Light surrounded him and lifted his wings; Pit's fluttered weakly but otherwise he didn't respond. Dark Pit's brow furrowed and his anxiety grew.
"What's wrong with him?"
Palutena and Viridi were waiting for him in the main hall. Palutena's eyes widened and she dropped her staff; Viridi's jaw dropped quite unattractively. Dark Pit stumbled his way to Palutena, whose arms raised automatically to catch Pit when he was all but dropped. "Help him," Dark Pit whispered before he hit the ground.
Dark Pit woke in a room unfamiliar to him. The bed was large and soft, made of down feathers and silk sheets rather than Viridi's rocks covered in leaves. He blinked groggily and looked around; a window looked out to the cover of clouds and there was a steel basin at the side of the bed. He peered over the lip and realized it was full of hot spring water.
Dragging his legs over the side of the bed, he forced them rigid and stood up, falling over and grabbing the nightstand before he faceplanted on the marble. His boy felt numb and heavy altogether and he kind of just wanted to lie down and die, but he had to make sure Pit was okay. He glanced around and saw his Silver Bow leaning against the wall; he took it and braced his boy against it with two hands, keeping his shaky body upright. His burnt robes were gone, leaving him only in his shorts and rings of slightly spotted bandages around his stomach and back. He gritted his teeth and pulled the door open.
He stumbled around blindly for a bit before catching wisps of Palutena and Viridi's voices. He followed the sounds down a branching hall and found them arguing softly in front of a door. Viridi was facing him and spotted him first; her hazel eyes narrowed slightly and she smirked.
"Well, let's let Pittoo clear up the details," she said. Palutena turned and Dark Pit was alarmed to see her eyes so bloodshot. It was like she was grieving a second time. His heart fell. No, don't let him have died a second time because of me…no, no way…
"Dark Pit?" she said softly. Dark Pit made his ambling way over until Palutena's hands laid on his shoulders, keeping him upright. "Please, can you tell us what happened?"
"First, I want to see Pit," he gasped. The goddesses exchanged a look and Viridi's smile soured.
"Why not?" she shrugged, passing Palutena to open the door. He caught a glance of Pit among a blue-sheeted bed and piles of stuffed animals—must be the idiot's bedroom—and he was no more awake than before. The door shut again and Viridi folded her arms across her chest. "Okay, explanation time."
"The Mirror of Truth," he said softly. Palutena gasped while Viridi gritted her teeth.
"Dark Pit," Palutena said urgently, "tell me you didn't create Pit using a Mirror." He hesitated before nodding and all the color left her face. "This is…oh, no, this can't be…"
"Why?"
"Because you're damaged goods," Viridi said bluntly. Had he possessed the energy, he would have lashed out, but so far it was taking everything he had to remain upright. "When you were created, it was with Pit, who has a complete soul; the Mirror was shattered halfway through and your soul wasn't completely formed. It's incomplete. Now you took that and made another half-copy."
"Are you saying there's something wrong with me?" he growled. Palutena huffed and turned his head back to her.
"It's just unnatural," she insisted. "In the first place, the Mirror is not meant for beings with souls; that's why it only worked on the Underworld Army. Pit's energy allowed you to be created. We just…we don't know what this can mean, especially since Pit is still unconscious. If he wakes, he could be what you were meant to: completely evil."
"Of course, if he wakes up," Viridi added casually. "The vegetable-hater could end up being a vegetable himself."
"Viridi!" he snapped, then groaned at the ache it left in his stomach. Palutena hushed him, running a hand through his hair. He hated how pleasing the gesture felt.
"Let's get you back to bed first. You're still too weak to be up and about."
He didn't have the energy to fight as Palutena took one of his arms and led him back to the room he woke up in. She laid him down and took a cloth from the basin, wringing it out before setting it on his forehead.
"You're a bit feverish," she said as way of explanation. Viridi sighed and sat in an ornate chair.
"There are many things that can go wrong, Pittoo. Don't you think we knew that Pandora had the Mirror? Why do you think we didn't try it ourselves?"
"Who's to say it will be 'Pit' in the end?" Palutena said softly. "Maybe he won't have any memories, maybe his personality will change… It was all just one big risk. It still is until he wakes and we can know for sure."
"So what if he doesn't remember? So what if he's a little different? He'll still be Pit," Dark Pit said. Palutena sighed.
"It's not only about that… We've moved on, we have accepted his death. It was a very terrible thing and we wish it didn't happen, but it did. He died protecting you, and we know he would be happy with that fact. You're the only one who isn't."
"Don't make me out to be in the wrong here," he muttered. "If you had a chance to bring Pit back, you would have too."
"Did you hear what she just said?" Viridi said derisively, then groaned. "It doesn't matter. It's already been ten days; Pit has no injuries but he won't wake. It's not looking good for him."
Dark Pit fought down his rising despair and scowled. "Just wait."
"And for how long exactly? We're immortal, but things can still be pointless."
"What Viridi is trying to say in her own tactless way," Palutena said, "Dark Pit…"
"I know what she's trying to say," he interjected. "I don't care. Let me be responsible for him then, however…he may come out of this." If at all. "I'm the one who made this decision, I will be accountable."
Palutena chewed her lower lip, then set her hands between her legs. The fabric couldn't quite hide their trembles. "Let's see how things look in another fortnight, then. It will take about that long for your injuries to fully heal."
"I can take care of myself," he said. Viridi rolled her eyes.
"And then he goes and throws himself through another magic mirror…"
"Viridi!" Palutena chided. Viridi threw her hands up placatingly with a shrug.
"Just saying."
Palutena appeared at least once a day to look over him and make sure he was healing properly. Once he was well enough to get around, he spent his evenings in Pit's hot spring, relishing the soothing heat against his torn back. The delicate bones of his wings had thankfully survived the fall, but some of his primary feathers were ripped out. They were already partly grown back.
When he returned to his unofficial room on the fourteenth day, he found new black robes neatly folded on the sheets that smelled like cow manure. He was already tired of Pit's white clothes, but he couldn't say the fertilizer smell was better. He slipped on the familiar colors and sighed, turning to his Silver Bow.
"Now or never…"
He slung the weapon across his back and relished the security it brought. He would need all his nerve for this.
Dark Pit had memorized the short journey to Pit's room in his convalescent time and made not one errant step on the way. He pushed the door open a crack and peered at the bed; he hadn't moved an inch same as before. He stepped inside and shut the door behind him.
"It's now or never, idiot," he said, walking up to the bed. Floor to ceiling windows lined the adjacent wall, facing the gardens where centurions practiced their moves. The courtyard was empty now, leaving only the sense of what was once there.
Dark Pit sat in the chair at Pit's bedside; still, the angel did not stir. "I knew what I was risking when I went for the Mirror, but I did it anyway. So you can't just not wake up—you can't just not be Pit. I…I haven't moved on and I know it. I feel empty without you around, and it's ridiculous; since when have I needed your inane jokes to fill some void? But the fact is, Pit, I just…I j-ju…please, wake up already."
No movement on the bed. Dark Pit lowered his face to his hands, gripping it so tightly he felt sure his fingers would leave bruises. Good; he wanted his face to be different, wanted to look and see something other than the useless copy that not only killed Pit once, but twice…! Gods would he hate himself for this; he would curse his own name until the day the breath left his body.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "So sorry, so so sorry…"
When he raised his head, Pit was sitting up in bed. Dark Pit nearly fell from the chair in shock.
Pit's eyes were fuzzy with sleep as they roamed the room. Dark Pit held his breath, waiting for something, anything. They finally landed on the black angel and no kind of recognition showed. He wondered if Pit really had lost his memories, or worse, as Viridi predicted.
"Pit?" Dark Pit hedged, leaning forward slightly. Pit blinked slowly, scanning his face for what felt like an hour. His white wings flapped with unease before curling around his skinny torso. "Do you…understand what I'm saying? Not that you really did before, moron," he muttered under his breath, more to soothe himself with some familiarity than actually throwing a jab out there. Then, to his utter shock:
"Not a moron!"
His head snapped back to Pit so quickly he nearly got whiplash. Pit's brows were drawn into a frown and his eyes were alight, polished by indignant anger. Dark Pit lunged onto the bed with one knee, grabbing Pit's cheeks and staring him down.
"Pit, is that you? For real?"
Pit fell silent again, eyes scanning Dark Pit once more, and he wondered if he imagined things. He didn't respond as the seconds ticked on and Dark Pit made to move away, but Pit's hands snapped up and gripped his wrists tightly. A tiny smile crossed his face.
"Hey, Pittoo, are you crying?"
His excitement overweighed his resentment at being caught teary-eyed—which he absolutely wasn't, by the way. His arms went around Pit and Palutena's angel let out a little surprised squeak. "You're okay," Pittoo said into his wing. Pit gasped, then relaxed into the hold.
"I'm okay," he repeated.
Palutena cried a lot. So much that Dark Pit felt awkward being there, but Pit didn't want him to leave. She held him close and sobbed and he nuzzled into the side of her neck without a word.
Viridi wasn't nearly so emotional. She looked Pit up and down with a derisive snort, nodded, and left. Dark Pit did catch an unnatural glisten to her eyes though.
Pit spent a lot of time asleep, but when he was awake he was very cognizant, albeit sluggish when it came to expressing his thoughts. Palutena wanted Dark Pit to monitor him since he hung around so often, but so far Dark Pit thought things worked out. There were no apparent drastic consequences apart from the lethargy—which he assumed to be temporary—and Pit was becoming more expressive by the day.
"Pittoo," he said, drawing him from his thoughts. He was hugging a star-shaped pillow to his chest and staring through the window at the clouds beyond. "D'ya think Lady Palutena would be okay with letting me fly?"
"Dunno, it's only been a few weeks—she's just barely managed to stop bawling her eyes out when you took a dump on your own."
"Yeah, but…I miss the air." Pit opened his mouth as if he had more to say, then shut it again. He didn't need to explain, Dark Pit understood. And, well, who was he to deny the one who rose from the grave anyway?
"Alright then. Let's go." Pit's head snapped back to his double, eyes comically wide and feathers askew.
"Right now?"
"I thought you meant right now. Cold feet?" Dark Pit smirked as he slid an arm around Pit's bony back, gripping him firmly on his ribcage. With his help, Pit slid to his feet and remained standing, although his wings fluttered reflexively to maintain his balance. Together, they ambled their slow way over to the gates of Skyworld, which parted in their presence and left them to face the great beyond.
"Palutena?" Pit said softly.
I don't think this is a good idea, Pit, Palutena responded, her voice ringing through Dark Pit's head as well as Pit's. You're still recovering, and I don't want anything to happen to you.
"Palutena, please. For a week all I've done is lie around and have people worry over me. At first, I was happy to have Pittoo at my beck and call," he sent a small smile in Pittoo's direction despite his scowl, "but I…I want to fly. I can't explain it."
"Remember it's my job to keep an eye on him," Dark Pit said. She was silent and he moved Pit forward. "You ready?"
"As I'll ever be," he said. Dark Pit wrapped an arm around Pit's waist and they fell forward into the endless sky.
"Viridi, grant me the Power of Flight!"
Ya know, it'd be nice if you did me some favors once in a while, she said mockingly, but gave him the power all the same. His wings spread overhead, bathing Pit's face in the greens and golds as he looked at the clouds below in wonder.
"It'll get cold," Pittoo warned before they dove into the cloud cover. Pit's hair was plastered to his forehead from the damp and he shivered a bit but the grin never left his face.
"I missed this." The clouds passed and they were soaring over a human town. Pit frowned at the sight as a dark cloud passed over his face. "Dark Pit…you never told me how I came back."
Dark Pit sighed. Pit eventually recalled his death, though he never described it—not that the dark angel wanted to hear it—but no one really told him how he'd revived. Palutena mentioned Dark Pit was the cause but that was about it. "Well, before I begin, remember that you've done far stupider things."
"That's a good sign," he said with a little smile.
"It… I used—"
An arrow suddenly flew inches past Dark Pit's nose. They looked down to see a small portion of the Underworld Army at the outskirts of the town; the humans were fighting valiantly, but Twinbellows was heading the attack and they were losing ground.
"Let's get down there," Pit said immediately. Pittoo's face went cold.
"We…can't. As your goddess said, you're still healing." Pit was already shaking his head before Dark Pit finished speaking.
"Pit," Palutena interjected, anxiety clear in her tone.
"Lady Palutena, please," Pit said when Pittoo made no moves to lower them, "the Power of Flight."
"We can't lose you again. It's far too risky. You shouldn't have come out at all—"
"Palutena!" he shouted, startling even Dark Pit. "The Underworld Army is there!"
"…Dark Pit?"
"I won't…" Pit gave him a scathing look and Pittoo matched it. "I won't allow it."
"Fine then!" In an alarming show of strength, Pit ripped Dark Pit's hand from his side and began to plummet. Dark Pit folded his wings back and dove after, but Pit had already begun to glide. Dark Pit was shocked to see Pit had grabbed the Silver Bow from his back.
"Dark Pit!" Palutena cried.
"I know!"
Their midair chase continued until they were low enough that Dark Pit could see the humans' bloody and bruised faces. Truth be told, after what had happened, he cared much less for what became of them; something Viridi appreciated as her ecological escapades could be callous at best towards them. But if anything was an indication of Pit still being Pit, this was it: throwing himself headlong into the fray with a half-functioning body and non-functioning brain. Gods, he hated that kid sometimes.
Pit's first three shots were wobbly and terribly off-mark; he missed the Monoeye by a longshot, and that thing was the definition of a target. He didn't react initially and alighted directly behind them, stumbling a bit on weak legs. Dark Pit followed right after and seized him by the forearm, causing Pit to cry out in pain.
"I'm going to kill you," he ground out between his teeth, "if these damn demons don't do it first."
Pit yanked his arm free and scowled, hiding the fact he was struggling to get another arrow ready. "I appreciate your concern, Dark Pit, but—"
"—but you're going back to Skyworld yesterday." Pit narrowed his eyes; Pittoo narrowed his eyes as well.
"Make. Me."
"Is that a challenge?"
Pit's scowl deepened, then a wicked smile crossed his face, something that sent a chill down Pittoo's spine. "No," he said, and leveled an arrow at Dark Pit's heart. "It's a threat."
…Shit.
Is this guy serious?
Robotically, Dark Pit raised his open palms and took a step back. "Pit. Pit, you're not serious."
"No, I'm not." His face dropped into a grin and he leapt into the air, gliding above the fight with arrows flying like clockwork. He was still off mark but visibly improving by the moment. Dark Pit was rooted to his spot, eyes on the white angel.
"Hey, Palutena…"
"Pittoo?"
He didn't respond, the words stuck in his throat as enemy after enemy dropped steadily. Pit had taken up a rhythm: glide, shoot, land, and over and over again. His face was focused, a look he wore many times before, but Dark Pit couldn't help remembering the expression when he threatened to shoot.
Pit's efforts were small in the grand scheme of things, but the little aid he provided allowed the humans to gain a fighting advantage. Soon enough, it was down to them and Twinbellows. It growled, huge ropes of acidic drool falling to the earth and sizzling on contact. Pit's back was straight as he faced the flaming mutt, but Dark Pit could see the tired slump to his shoulders. Pit looked up to the sky for a moment, then the familiar light of extraction surrounded him. Without missing a beat, he ripped the fibula from his shoulder and tossed it into the dirt, cutting all contact with Skyworld. Dark Pit felt like ripping his hair out.
"Pittoo, please, at least give him this." The blue light shone down on him, bearing with it the Palutena Bow. "And watch his back."
"Tch. I already know." He took the bow and whistled sharply; a flaming head turned in his direction. "Hey, you overgrown mutt, how about you chew on one of these?" Twinbellows opened its mouth for a roar and Dark Pit fired an arrow right inside. Its jaws clamped shut and it stumbled backwards with a loud whine. The humans scattered to avoid being trampled but Pit was much slower; Pittoo lurched forward and grabbed his arm, pulling him out of the way before he was squashed.
"Thanks," Pit said, holding out the Silver Bow. Dark Pit snatched it with a glare.
"We," he said lowly, tossing the Palutena Bow over, "are going to have a talk later. But for now—"
"Duck!" he cried and pushed the dark angel's head down, narrowly avoiding a flaming claw swipe. Dark Pit grabbed Pit's hand from his head and made sure he was making eye contact.
"For now, don't die. Again."
"Will do." Pit gestured to the human warriors backing away from Twinbellows' advances. The dog was leaving flaming trails wherever its paws landed; soon the blaze would reach their city. "We have to get them to safety first. Back to their city."
"Okay, but—" Dark Pit paused and his eyes narrowed at the entry gates. The wall was made of thick stone slabs, but the top seemed hollow… "That's an aqueduct." Pit followed his gaze and grinned.
"Wash out Twinbellows?"
"Get them in the town first."
"I'll distract Twinbellows," Pit said, and before Pittoo could protest he was running back into the fray, firing at its massive paws. This time, Dark Pit did yank a chunk of hair out. He tried to calm down as he faced the townspeople.
"Retreat! Retreat!" he called, then felt a blaze of heat prickling at his feathers. He turned and began spinning his bow at top speed, dissipating the massive fireball that had been sent their way. The townspeople needn't be told twice; they turned tail and ran back to their gates. Pittoo brought up the rear, redirecting any stray bolts of fire.
Pit was holding his own as well as he could. He alighted on rock outcroppings to give himself a bit of a height edge as he fired volleys of arrows, but they didn't shine as brightly as they ought to. Pit's next landed resulted in botched footing, and his wings flapped uselessly as he tumbled onto his stomach. Twinbellows roared and his rightmost head snapped out and gobbled him in one bite.
"Pit!" Dark Pit shouted. Twinbellows whinnied in pain and shook its heads; he realized Pit was using his bow to keep its jaws propped open. Pit was clinging for his life but he was slipping towards its throat. Dark Pit glanced over his shoulder; the last man was just making his way through the gates. He notched another arrow and let it fly. The arrow sliced a massive chunk through the gate, letting the heavy flow of water gush across the dirt. He raced ahead and soared into the air, landing on Twinbellows' nose. In the seconds before it was swept away, he grabbed the Palutena Bow and yanked it—along with the idiot clinging—and flew forward. Twinbellows was knocked off its feet and into the flow, its fire dousing in a massive puff of steam. Dark Pit landed several feet on a low cliff.
"Are you okay?" he asked Pit, who was kneeling on the ground. He dragged himself up with a weak chuckle.
"My clothes aren't," he said, indicating his heavily charred robes. They looked out when Twinbellows moaned and found it trying and failing to rise to its paws. Pit suddenly let out a little noise. "This. This is." Pit's eyes roamed the battlefield constantly like he was caught in some sort of dream. "I'm unsatisfied."
"You're what?" Dark Pit wanted to give Pit a break, he really did, but the kid was grinding his nerves and he was two seconds away from plucking him. "I've already put my feathers on the line taking you out here against your goddess' wishes, and you have the nerve to be unsatisfied? Sorry, did you want me to throw you into Twinbellows' maw instead?"
"No, that's not…it…" Pit trailed off and didn't continue. Dark Pit stepped closer, frustration melting into concern, and Pit suddenly pitched forward; Dark Pit glided the remaining distance to prevent him from face planting on the ground.
"Pit? Pit!" Pit remained unresponsive for several seconds, and just when Dark Pit was really beginning to freak out, Pit's eyes fluttered open.
"…Why are you holding me?"
Dark Pit dropped Pit, who hit the ground with a little oof. "She was right, you aren't well enough to be doing this," he said flatly, touching his fibula. "Palutena, take us back."
The extraction light surrounded them and lifted their wings to the heavens. Pit rolled over in midair and Dark Pit stared at his skinny back, the wings struggling to keep him aloft. "You really think this was a bad idea?" Pit said without looking at him. Dark Pit sighed.
"Yes, I do."
"I saw the fight, I had to come help."
"Pit—" He paused and looked harder at Pit's wings. A few of his underfeathers were black. Before, he would've thought it an insignificant side effect, but after the way Pit had acted… He hated it, but he had to speak with Palutena and Viridi. "Yeah, I understand, birdbrain."
Pit gave Pittoo a cross look and folded his arms. Then he smiled. "I forgot to say it earlier, but thanks for bringing me back."
Yeah, just hope it's not gonna bite me in the ass.
Palutena and Viridi were both waiting for their return. Palutena looked Pit over worriedly before sending him off to the hot springs. Dark Pit waited until he left hearing distance before facing the two goddesses.
"I'm guessing from your face that things didn't go all peachy," Viridi said. "Palutena doesn't want me to say I told you so…but I don't care. So. I told you so."
"Next time you want a bomb dropped on some playground, you do it yourself," Dark Pit said. Viridi huffed and turned her head.
"Dark Pit, please, what happened out there?" Palutena asked. He shook his head.
"I don't know… He was just, just weird most of it. If I had to describe it…I'd say he was more like me than anything." A little more caustic, certainly more forceful, and…Pit would never threaten another person's life. No way. But neither would Dark Pit—at least, he wouldn't do it unprovoked. He certainly wouldn't have threatened Pit in such a way. But if he had to say that Pit was even worse than him…no, he couldn't. He shook it off and pulled his wings tight against his shoulder blades. "He's more blockheaded than before, but he still went and stuck his neck out to fight the Underworld Army. He's fine, just a little different than expected."
I'm damaged goods, they said. What happens when half a soul is split in two?
"I'm going to go find him, make sure he's alright." Dark Pit dismissed himself and turned away, ignoring their whispered conversation behind his back. Things would be okay…they had to be.
Pit was at his hot spring stripped down to his short, drifting lazily on his back in the golden water. His eyes were lidded as they focused on Dark Pit. "Whatcha got there?" he asked, looking at the bundle in his hands.
"I couldn't find any of your robes, so here's one of mine." He set it on the grass and sat down. Pit hummed appreciatively.
"Don't you wanna soak?"
"Nope."
"Well suit yourself." Pit rolled over and ducked his head beneath the surface. Dark Pit stared at his wet wings and the stark black feathers stared back. Maybe it was the lack of adrenaline in his veins, but he could count more now than there were before. His mouth skewed and he looked at his feet. He had spent far too many hours sitting in this same spot mourning Pit; it was foolish to do the same when Pit was there in front of him, alive and whole.
"Actually…count me in." He shrugged off his robes and arm bracers. He kicked off his sandals and stepped into the water, pumping his wings to propel himself closer to Pit. "I didn't tell you how you came back, did I?"
Pit raised an eyebrow. "No, you didn't get to." Dark Pit told him about Pandora and the Mirror of Truth. At the end of it Pit let out a long breath and shrugged. "You're right, that was pretty dumb. But it worked out didn't it? I'm here, Lady Palutena's happy, Viridi is as happy as she'll get…I think it worked out."
"Yeah." They floated in silence for a few minutes, just feeling the healing water, until Dark Pit moved to the shore. "I'm feeling like a game of Smash."
"Sure." Pit stepped onto the grass and went to one of the supporting columns where a store of towels was sheltered inside. He dried his hair and flapped his wings a bit to get them fluffed up; several feathers came free and the black ones were more obvious than ever.
"Pit, did you notice you have some black feathers?" Dark Pit decided to address the elephant in Skyworld. Pit blinked and pulled the tip of his wing around with his fingers, examining the underside.
"…Yeah, I guess you're right." And that was that. He picked up the robes Dark Pit brought and slipped them over his head. "Hey, how do I look?"
Dark Pit frowned and grabbed a towel of his own. "Don't know, don't care."
"Hey, don't be like that." He looked up to see Pit had already moved ahead of him. "Come on, last one gets the beat-up Joy-Con." He turned and raced forward, flapping his wings for a little speed, and Dark Pit's frown deepened. There definitely were more black feathers than before. But what did it mean?
"That Palutena's Guidance stuff was really on the nose," Pit remarked as the GAME screen appeared. "Whoever wrote the script really knows his stuff."
"Says you. I only had three lines." Pit laughed while Pittoo kept his eyes on the results. His Bowser lost to Pit's Little Mac. The odd thing was Pit never played Little Mac before. Now, he'd never played Pit in Smash beforehand, but for all the challenges Pit gave him, he only ever swore by Yoshi and Olimar—Palutena, too, said Pit was atrocious with those two yet he never tried another character. So how was he suddenly an expert in an entirely different class of a character? And it wasn't a fluke either; he'd been losing for the last four hours. The sky had long since turned dark from when they began.
"Also, definitely my best voice acting," he continued. "You sounded a little gruff."
"Shove it." Part of his surliness arose from the fact that in giving Pit his last clean robes, he had nothing to wear but the centurion tunic. He retaliated by plucking one of Pit's black feathers. Pit yelped in surprise.
"Hey, you shove it!" He shoved Pittoo off his bed and he hit the ground in a heap. He grabbed one of Pit's pillows and threw it at his face. He stood up and went to the television.
"Anyway, I'm going to—"
He froze, and the Palutena Bow embedded itself into the screen blade first, shattering it into hundreds of tiny glass bits. A little piece cut his cheek and he touched the wound in surprise, turning to Pit. The angel in question was frozen as well, eyes wide and wings on end, then he sat back and curled them in tight.
"I just," he paused, "Don't do that again."
The pillow or the feather? he thought, but just as with Palutena, he couldn't vocalize. He nodded and left without another word, and as he trekked back to his unofficial room, he was forced to face facts: something was wrong with Pit. Now, how was he going to explain it to the goddesses?
He was lying in bed mulling it over when Palutena's frantic voice suddenly filled his head: "Pittoo, Pit just ran off!"
"He what?" he said, flummoxed at first.
"He took his bow and just left through his window. I didn't give him the Power of Flight and neither did Viridi. He also took off his fibula." He ground his teeth—was Pit trying to run away? "I'm begging you, please go after him."
"On it." Dark Pit got up, laced his sandals, strapped on his bow and was already heading to the exit doors. He could hear Palutena's faint cries in the back of his mind and grimaced. This whole thing was turning into one massive shitshow. He should have thought it through better. For now, he had to rectify the problem he created.
He leapt through the doors and with the Power of Flight he was cutting through the starry night sky. He had always had a faint sense of Pit's location, and though Pit never said as much he assumed it was mutual—this time, he sensed Pit farther to the east than he had ever been. He followed his instincts and shot across the sky.
"Soo," Viridi said, "what's the plan, Inkling?"
"The plan is to get Pit back."
"And theennn?" She sounded far too amused for the situation and he snapped at her. "Well, bringing him back is short-term, isn't it? Whatever's going on with him will still be there when you get back."
"I don't know. Shut up. I'll figure it out."
"I hope you do." And she left with that.
The pull between the angels grew stronger and Dark Pit's Power of Flight was down to less than a minute. Luckily it didn't seem to matter much, for the land ahead was wrought with massive brambles shining a sickly greenish grey in the moonlight. Another Reset Bomb Forest, it seemed, but even older than the last one; there wasn't even the tiniest hint of human interaction.
As he lowered himself to the earth he spotted strange shadows scattered across the dirt. The moon brightened and he realized they were the fresh bodies of Underworld enemies peppered with arrows; they had already begun to dissolve into Hearts, but it meant Pit hadn't gotten there too long ago. He hit the ground as his wings returned to normal size and tripped over something surprisingly corporeal. He rose to his rear with a groan and looked over what he fell—and his heart stopped cold.
T…That's a human.
Granted, a human speared through with a Monoeye like a kabob, but a human nonetheless. He slowly rose to his feet and looked around the battlefield more closely. There were some more humans, less than a dozen who appeared to have been caught in the crossfire. He swallowed and stepped carefully around their bodies to the cluster of forestry. There was a small entry point close to the ground; he lowered himself to his belly and crawled through.
The same as before, barely any light could shine through, just enough for him to see his fingers right in front of his face. His bow caught on a low hanging branch and he suddenly wondered why he brought it. He didn't expect to fight Pit…did he? Sure, if it came down to it, he would bonk some sense into that empty head, but a real fight—no, he couldn't. He couldn't. Everything had just become so terrible so quickly and he couldn't handle it.
He continued crawling until more light was shining through the small tunnel. He could make out a clearing at the end and picked up the pace until he could see into the forest. There was a large mossy rock at the center where Pit was perched, his wings folded in tightly and his head down. The bow was dangling loosely from his fingers as Dark Pit came into view.
"Pit, what happened?" He jumped a little in surprise, eyes wide in the moonlight. Suddenly Dark Pit realized they weren't quite blue; there were some flecks of red in there that made them more lapis colored. "What are you doing? What happened out there?"
"What, the Underworld Army? I destroyed them. That's what I do."
"But there were humans too."
"They were in the way," he shrugged. "I didn't want to, but they were." Pittoo's eyes narrowed.
"Pit wouldn't do that."
"So what, you're saying I'm not me?" He laughed aloud until he realized Pittoo wasn't following along. Pit stood up with the bow clenched tightly in both hands. "I am Pit," he said, glaring down at the other. "Servant to the Goddess of Light."
"Then why did you run away from her?" he challenged. Pit started to avert his eyes, then he raised his chin.
"I had to fight. It was…I just had to."
"Like you had to throw that blade at my hand, or had to threaten my life if I dragged you back to Skyworld. Do you see yourself, what you're doing? It's pretty messed up from my point of view."
"Who are you to tell me wrong from right?" he continued.
"Don't know, really. All I can say for sure is things aren't the way they're supposed to be. Here I am, dressed like a centurion, and there you are…the black angel."
A shadow passed over Pit's face as his wings stretched overhead. They were thickly mottled with black, so much that the white feathers were more like accents. "Leave," he said, raising the Palutena Bow, "or else."
"And there you go again with the threats. Don't worry, I'm not here to threaten you." Dark Pit split his bow into blades. "I'm bringing you back one way or another, and that's a promise."
Pit unleashed a volley of highspeed arrows that would've sent any human soldiers running for their lives. Pittoo deflected them smoothly with his two blades before lunging forward, tackling Pit from his rock and to the grass below. Pit gained the upper hand and Dark Pit struggled with his blades to keep the Palutena Bow from plunging into his ribcage; he brought up a foot and dug it into Pit's gut, sending him flying backwards with a heavy whump. Pit rolled to his feet instantly and launched an arrow with a massive energy trail. Dark Pit launched an arrow of his own and their collision led to a huge burst of wind which flattened all the surrounding trees. Leaves filled the air and rained down on them.
"What's the point of this?" Dark Pit said. "We are copies, even matches to one another."
Pit didn't respond, instead launching a blade of the Palutena Bow like a javelin once again. Dark Pit's left wing was pinned to the rock and he bit down a cry of pain. He yanked the sword free when Pit rushed him and slammed it against his intended swipe, cracking both blades. He twirled the Silver Bow in his free hand and cut a clean line of Pit's fringe before he managed to leap backwards. The lack of hair bared his raging expression to the moonlight.
Dark Pit loosed several tracking arrows that Pit easily avoided, circling the clearing before scaling the rock behind him. Dark Pit stumbled backwards when Pit pounced on him, his blades cutting into the dirt, then he threw himself up and forward in a wild flurry of disorganized slashes. Dark Pit struggled to parry with his own swords; this sloppy style was nothing he was used to, and he was being forced backwards. His heel caught on a rock and he tripped backwards, narrowly avoiding a slice that would've taken his head. Then, as his back hit the grass, he watched Pit's swords coming for his heart. He didn't think, didn't look who he was facing; he turned his blade out and struck.
Pit's blade slid heavy into the space between two ribs, just barely missing his lung but causing a few fractures. He missed Dark Pit's heart from the impact of the Silver Bow plunging into his gut. His eyes bugged.
"Pit—" Blood gushed from the point of impact, staining his hand and face before Pit fell forward onto the grass adjacent. Dark Pit struggled to sit up past the burning agony in his chest and rolled Pit onto his back. His face was screwed in pain and he was pressing both hands into the wound. When his eyes focused on Dark Pit he exploded into a wild series of expletives that would've made Viridi blush. It lasted for all of fifteen seconds before he ran out of breath and passed out cold.
"Pittoo?"
"Pittoo? What's the situation? Where is Pit?"
Déjà vu, Dark Pit thought with a sick laugh. "Palutena, take us back."
"Us?" she repeated, then fell silent as they were extracted.
They landed on the floor of Palutena's Temple with a whump. Centurions immediately rushed in, picking up Pit's still speared body and rushing him outside, presumably to the hot spring. Palutena knelt at Pittoo's side and helped him sit up. Her face was ashen and he gave her a small smile. "He's back. E-Excuse me if he isn't wh-whole." She helped him up and he pushed her away, pressing a hand to his damaged ribs. "I-I'm sorry. Th-This is all my f-fault."
"Pittoo—" She exhaled hard and wrapped her arms around herself. "I have to check on Pit. I just…we'll talk about this more when he's stable."
She turned away and hurried in the directions of the centurions. Dark Pit brought his knees up to his chest and bowed his face into them. His wings shielded him from the world when hot tears poured down his cheeks. "D-Dammit…dammit…"
Palutena was…occupied, so it was up to Viridi to get Dark Pit's side of the story, so she said. Dark Pit was content to just stay under the sheets and avoid the world.
"No one's blaming you for anything, ya know," she said with a sigh. "We just want the full story."
"Yeah, well, I don't want to talk. So beat it."
Viridi gave a much more dramatic sigh and Dark Pit's ankle was suddenly trapped in some thorny vise grip. He was yanked upside-down via a thick piece of ivy that had grown through the window and onto the ceiling. Viridi tapped his nose with her staff, eyes narrowed. "We dropped it before when you claimed Pit was fine. Now your sword's getting deeply acquainted with his insides. Something's missing here and you're the one that needs to clear it up."
His ribs felt like rolling hot coals in his chest and he was having some difficulty catching his breath. He might have cried if he felt like he had any tears left. "He tried to kill me."
"What? I couldn't hear you."
"He tried to kill me!" he shouted, looking Viridi right in the eyes. "He tried to kill me three times—this time, if I hadn't stabbed him, he would've done it. I saw in his eyes, he would've done it."
Viridi's eyes widened and for once the goddess was completely speechless. The vine unraveled and Dark Pit hit the bed in a heap; he groaned at the spike of pain from the impact. She sat heavily in a nice chair and brushed her hair from her eyes. "So," she said at length, "what shall we do?"
"I don't…rrgh…know."
"Actually, I was giving the illusion of choice. I know what I'm doing." She mimed slicing her throat and Pittoo growled.
"No, you're not."
"And if I don't then what, he'll come in for lucky try number four? Well, whatever; I know Palutena will want him to talk when he's well enough, and I'm sure as hell gonna be there to see it. Have fun writing your will." She stood and twirled her staff before disappearing in a flurry of leaves and a gust of wind.
Silence. A world of silence.
Days, weeks, perhaps even months later, Dark Pit woke in the dead of the night to see a winged figure crouched on the windowsill. Luminescent violet eyes turned to meet his.
"Hey," Pit said softly. Dark Pit nodded but couldn't find his words. Those black and white wings fluttered uneasily before wrapping around his bandaged torso. "I'm…sorry for trying to stab you."
"Are you really?" he snapped without thinking and hated himself for doing so. Pit frowned in the moonlight, eyes lowered.
"I don't know, but it seems the right thing to do. Apologizing."
Dark Pit sat up from the tangle of sheets. "Apologies mean nothing unless you understand what you did wrong."
"I do. At least, Lady Palutena told me. Something's…I'm not right, am I? I'm not the Pit you guys knew. I can see it in your eyes…you're disappointed." Dark Pit shrugged a shoulder, fighting to keep his face blank. Pit sighed. "I want to ask something." His eyes returned to Pittoo's, searching, wanting something. "What's wrong with me?"
"Who knows?" It was painful to admit, but there it was. Pit's wings tightened around himself. "But, Pit, running off isn't an answer."
"'Else what? I stay and endure this…these looks you guys give me?" he spat. "I'm not who you want me to be. No one ever went around forcing you to be Pit, right?"
"Well no one went around trying to impale me." His fists, previously knotted in the sheets, balled against his sides, and he threw the blanket aside to stand on his feet, wings taut against his back. "Pit—and that's who you are, you are still Pit—I don't care if you're a walking talking eggplant. What those goddesses were saying before…they said you might not have a soul at all. But they said the same thing about me, and look! I would risk my own life to save yours, because you went and did so for me. Your light is what sustains my shadow."
"So what do you expect me to do? Change to fit your mold?"
"Pit, I want to ask you something. Why did you try to kill me?" He struggled to maintain eye contact and so did Pit, but Pit was the first to look away, turning until he could sit with his back to the window. With his face in the shadows Dark Pit couldn't be sure, but it seemed his eyes were glistening.
"I'm sorry."
"Pit. Answer."
"I ju—I don't know! I was upset…every time, you'd upset me, and I j—I just wanted to cause some damage. Burn off steam."
"Even if the thing you're damaging is me?"
He turned his head away. "Made no difference to me. I guess that makes me depraved."
"It wasn't right," Pittoo agreed.
"Therein lies the problem. I don't know right from wrong, not anymore. Is this what it's like, lacking a soul? Feeling empty and lost all the time? Is this what you felt like, Dark Pit?" He looked at Pittoo again and this time he was certainly crying. Dark Pit smiled bitterly; at least he had some emotional capacity.
"More or less."
"…Can it really be fixed?" His voice was as soft as a breeze. Pittoo sighed and moved to sit next to Pit.
"You won't be the same. None of us will be, I guess. But it can be fixed, and you will be fine. And if not…well, I'll always be here. You'll have to try a lot harder to kill me, birdbrain."
"Promise?" He didn't know if Pit meant promising to fix him or promising not to die; either way, he had no plans on reneging on either. He set a hand on Pit's forearm, squeezing hard.
"Promise."
Pit stared at Dark Pit's hand for a long moment, lost in his thoughts. Then the corner of his lip twitched. "Should we hug now?"
"I'd rather not."
"But," he said sagely, eyes shining, "it would be the Pit thing to do."
He rolled his eyes so hard he thought they would pop out. "If it makes you feel better—"
He couldn't speak when Pit trapped him in a tight bear hug, his multicolored wings wrapped around Pittoo's head. He wanted to complain, but…his scent. Pit always sort of smelled like freedom, if he had to put it into words; a combination of sweet wild grass, tangy hot spring water, lemony laundry soap, and the clearness of the open sky. Though they said this Pit didn't have a soul, the smell was still there, and it was so poignant it made Pittoo's eyes cloud with tears. He sniffed as subtly as he could, but being next to Pit's ear, the boy noticed.
"Hey, Pittoo, are you crying?" he asked.
"I'm—shut up. Hug me."
"I am already," he said smartly, but complied anyway.
Pit was training on the grass, effortlessly sliding through various combat maneuvers with the Palutena Bow. It would have been nothing out of the ordinary if his wings weren't mottled black and his eyes shone violet in the sunlight. Palutena gripped her elbows and hummed with disconcert.
"Are you sure about this, Dark Pit?" she said softly, though he wouldn't be able to hear them from the gates of the palace.
"Not particularly," he said, seated on the windowsill and polishing the Silver Bow. "But I don't plan on offing another Pit."
"That may be so, but…"
"I believe things'll work out. I may not be an all-seeing goddess or whatever, but I'm walking proof." He slid to the tiled floor and strapped the bow across his back, joining Palutena in the doorway. Their shadows fell across the grass, not equal in size nor status. "Pit's the one who made me more human. The least I can do is return the favor."
She still seemed doubtful but held her grievances and tongue. Viridi, however, had so such qualms. Should he become a threat, he'll know the power of nature, she said with no traces of her usual dispassion or sarcasm—it was nothing short of a promise. So make sure I don't have to, Dark Pit.
"Put a seed in it," he replied, stepping onto the grass. "Gods and goddesses, you get hung up on the wrong things. That kid is no less an annoying pest than he was before, 'cept he's almost good enough to beat me in a swordfight. But he'll come to find," he grinned darkly, drawing the bow and holding the blade out, "a centurion is no match for a real black angel."
He ran out onto the green calling, "Yo, Pit, right here and now!" Pit, a bit out of breath from his training, nodded, and with a mutual grin, the two angels descended into a match of blows. Evenly matched, a show with no end in sight, a dance of two halves struggling to reform. But they would reform, that, Pittoo was confident in, for there was no shadow that could be without a source of light.
