Have you all watched Neal Brennan's latest special called Blocks on Netflix?
It's SO good, and it even has a shout-out to Bo!
Anyway, in honor of the special (and its incredible ending), here's a short post about the two comics:
1. Neal was an early champion of Inside, even tweeting about it the day after it was released
Tumblr media
2. Neal attended the Netflix Is a Joke brunch with all the major comedians in May (including John Mulaney, Jerrod Carmichael and Bo—Neal is the one in the pink shirt and shades)
Tumblr media
3. In a Consequence video, Neal discusses Bo and how his start on YouTube protected him from the harsh grind of comedy clubs. Neal also brings up "Can't Handle This" and how Bo finally named his mental health issue in Make Happy
Tumblr media
4. In a recent New Yorker interview, Neal says that he texted Bo and Jerrod about his special's artistic set! 🤯
He specifically mentions their respective masterpieces and how they've influenced his upcoming work as well:
So Derek and I have an ongoing conversation about how to do shows that are more than just a press conference. Bo [Burnham], Jerrod [Carmichael]—I think those guys are of the same mind, too, which is: this can be more than a press conference. I think at one point while I was in rehearsals I texted Bo and Jerrod a picture of the set, like, “I hope you’re happy."
“Rothaniel,” and “Inside,” and, hopefully, my specials, and “Nanette,” and [Mike] Birbiglia’s specials, and Hasan [Minhaj]’s specials and Derek’s specials—I’m sure there’s somebody I’m forgetting—they’re doing something else besides the press conference.
Hope you've enjoyed this quick look at Neal Brennan and his "traumedy" (as he calls it). You can stream Blocks now—and it is well worth it! ✌🏼

Ladies and gentlemen, my fellow citizens, into the world around who watches on bated breath for the leaders of the world to take the lead. @joebidensanonymous needs to show command without showing our hand. False flag oppos, pomp and circumstance. Horse and pony show FFS. Dumptruck has the foreign policy of a buckeye nut. And bone spurs aren’t going to save him now. But, I pray that the right decisions are made. And don’t let the do nothing. Democrats tell you that a vote for RFK or a non-vote is a vote for Trump because it’s not. It’s a vote for RK or non-vote.

Things to watch if your favorite show is being affected by the WGA strike
This is everything that I have watched and enjoyed. They are by no means perfect shows. This includes complete series, cancelled series, and series that are still in progress. Feel free to add your own recommendations.
Only Murders in the Building (Hulu; currently on season 3)
Murder mystery dramedy set in a wealthy NYC apartment complex
Staring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomes as three residents who decide to make a podcast about the murder
The cast has great chemistry and the twists are compelling
Gravity Falls (Hulu/Disney; ended after 2 seasons in 2014)
An animated show about a pair of fraternal twins who spend the summer with their con-man great uncle in a weird, monster filled town
Absolutely iconic children's show.
Dead End: Paranormal Park (Netflix; cancelled after 2 seasons in 2023)
Animated YA show about two teens, an exiled demon, and a pug, that all work at a haunted theme park and are investigating the disappearances of some of the staff
Similar in style to Gravity Falls
Sadly cancelled by Netflix, but there's also the graphic novels to enjoy
Reservation Dogs (Hulu, ended after season 3 in 2023)
Coming of age dramedy about four Indigenous teens living on a reservation in Oklahoma as they mourn a friend who died and dream of running away to California together
Made by an all Indigenous writers, directors, and main cast
Scrubs (Hulu; ended after 8 seasons 2010)
Workplace comedy about staff at a California hospital
Praised as the one of most medically accurate medical show
Very much a 2000s comedy. Humor can be jarring/mean by today's standards
What We Do in the Shadows (Hulu, currently on season 5)
A mockumentary following 4 vampires and their familiar that live on Staten Island as they go about their boring, pathetic lives
Makes fun of the "cool, sexy, edgy" vampire trope
Based on a 2014 movie of the same name
Dead to Me (Netflix, ended after 3 seasons in 2022)
A traumedy (trauma comedy) following a woman who's husband was killed in a hit-and-run and the perpetrator who lost her own partner and secretly befriends her
It's funny about what happens but does deal with some heavy topics so definitely look into that before watching
The Owl House (Disney; ended after 3-ish seasons in 2023)
About a young girl who wanders into the Demon Realm and decides to stay there and become of witch instead of going to summer camp
Celebrates being the weirdo and being kind to people
Made by many of the same people who did Gravity Falls
The Office (Peacock; ended after 9 seasons in 2013)
Workplace mockumentary about some bizarre people who work in a boring office space
Features a lot of cringe/second-hand embarrassment based humor
Based on the British limited series of the same name
Very much a 2000s comedy that can at times be just plain mean. Season 1 is the worst season by far so if you can get through it the character become way more likeable
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (Netflix, ended after 5 seasons in 2020)
An animated fantasy about a young soldier who simultaneously discovers that her side is the aggressor in the war and that the planet has chosen her to be it's legendary protector. This forces her to leave the only home she's known and her childhood friend to fight for the rebellion, who she thought were her enemies
A remake of the 1985 He-Man spinoff series
Very "defeat them with power of friendship and also this sword you found in the woods"
BoJack Horseman (Netflix, ended after 6 seasons in 2020)
An adult animated comedy about a self-centered, washed-up 90s sitcom actor (who is a horse) as he struggles to become famous again and break out of his destructive habits
Satirizes Hollywood, media culture, and American politics
One of those shows where you aren't supposed to admire the main characters
Big trigger warnings for this one. Seriously.
Good Omens (Amazon Prime, currently on season 2)
Follows the misadventures of a demon and an angel, a witch's descendent, two unskilled witch hunters, a sex-worker, and the antichrist and his friends as the antichrist grows into his power and brings about Armageddon, all set to Queen songs
Based on the 1990 book by Neil Gaiman and Sir Terry Pratchett
The fandom focuses a lot of the shipping side of the show but forget all of that if you plan to watch it
Season 2 wrecked me
Gentleman Jack (HBO Max & the BBC; cancelled after season 2 in 2022)
Based on the real diaries of Anne Lister, a wealthy lesbian in 1830s England who is looking for a wife and to expand her business enterprises
Sadly HBO pulled away and the BBC couldn't afford to make another season without them. What was made is still worth checking out.
Our Flag Means Death (HBO Max; currently on season 1)
A pirate workplace comedy/romcom that loosely follows the real life of Stede Bonnet, a wealthy landowner who ran away to become a pirate due to a mid-life crisis. He wants so badly to be a pirate captain but is far from qualified for the role.
"Traditionally, piracy is a culture of abuse...floggings, keelhaulings. And my thought is, "Why?" And also, what if it weren't like that?" really is the thesis of the show
(Edit) omg I cant believe I forgot:
Avatar: the Last Airbender (Netflix; ended after 3 seasons in 2008)
An animated children's fantasy series in which people can manipulate one of the four elements, and their peacekeeper, the Avatar, can manipulate all four. After being frozen in ice for 100 years, the 12 year old Avatar learns that the Fire Nation has begun a war that he must stop by next summer
Literally the blueprint for the modern animation that we enjoy today. IDK what else to say. It's iconic
Hilda (Netflix; ended after 2 seasons and 1 movie in 2021)
An animated children's fantasy series set in a world full of Nordic folk creatures
After spending much of her life living in the woods with her mom and her pet deerfox, Hilda is upset to learn that her mom now wants to move to Trolberg, a walled-off city where Hilda fears there is nothing interesting to do. She quickly discovers that there is just as much magic and wonder in the city as there is in the woods.
She's voiced by Bella Ramsay and the animation is beautiful. It's all all-around good vibes show.
Interview with the Vampire (AMC; currently on season 1)
After the first interview in the 70s that ended in disaster, Louis de Pointe du Lac reached out to Daniel Molloy and demanded a do-over. He goes back to his life as a black businessman in 1910s New Orleans and the complicated relationship between himself and Lestat de Lioncourt.
It's actually gay enough this time you guys.
I'd also like to add:
The Bear (FX/Hulu; currently on season 2)
A dramedy about a New York chef who inherits a failing sandwich shop after his older brother commits suicide.
Sometimes a found family isn't all sunshine and unicorns. Sometimes its a lot of screaming and resentment and cussing each other out.
It's a very stressful to watch so it's not for everyone, but if you're the type who finds that cathartic then you should give it a watch.
The Sandman (Netflix; currently on season 1)
Begins in 1916 with the capture of the god of dreams by a greedy sorcerer. After he escapes he must rebuild his realm and repair the damage done by his absence.
Trying to describe this show is really, really, difficult. It would be easier to describe what this show isn't.
Based on the DC comic of the same name by Neil Gaiman.

ok so i am going to attempt some deadpool fic despite my lack of skill at comedy or pop culture references but it’s not gonna be the birthday gangbang (yet) because that’s just so goddamn many comics characters i’d have to research. i think it’ll be “wade and vanessa figure out how to get back together and simultaneously wade and logan figure out how to get together at all” and GOD i hope i can pull it off. it definitely won’t have enough jokes but im pretty sure i can manage enough decent ones to not completely embarrass myself.
im excited about it even though it’s not the longed-for gangbang, tho! i will figure out while writing if i want vanessa to supervise wade and logan’s first time (post-odyssey) bc i would LOVE that but we’ll see if it happens naturally. fingers crossed!
(i also want to write some post-first-movie wade/vanessa romantic traumedy but i don’t think that will get a LOT of readers so unless it really seizes me it’s backburnered until i can write at least one fic people will want to talk to me about. i don’t write for the praise, but i DO write for the conversations.)

Master Recs: Webcomics (Vol. 1)
Tumblr media
I enjoy webcomics. I like being exposed to accessible art, to witness the evolution of artists and storytellers who bring their individual viewpoints to the table, expressing themselves through the medium of free comic books! I spend an inordinate amount of leisure time perusing the old sequential literature. As a result, I follow a ton of people that would give it to me. Now, I wish to recommend a few of these works from my constantly expanding list. I shall begin with a small taster of five, currently ongoing projects to wet your appetite. Let us go.
Preeny Has to Repeat 6th Grade by Jasmine Coté
Tumblr media
Preeny is a brush-tailed kitty, fluffy both in appearance and personality, and she might just be the Chosen One to save the world from Darkness – as it is often the case. This comic vaunts a peculiar shtick: the setting is populated by adoptable furry OCs the artist has bought from DeviantArt kids, effectively creating a Kingdom Hearts style fictional universe for the Mid-2000's Sparkledog subculture. This works both as a unique selling point and as a clever metatextual conceit that informs the themes of the story, which is an earnest celebration of creativity, childhood and self-expression, untainted by the cynicism of "You Posted Cringe." It's funny, cute, sincere and it hits you right in the feelings.
HELLO FROM HALO HEAD by Batshaped
Tumblr media
The author describes it as "An exploration of the multitudes a person experiences as a response to trauma. Also cartoon animal adventures. I promise it's mostly funny. it's a trauma comedy! a TRAUMEDY!!!!" Indeed, I would say it's an apt summary. The strip began life as a series of Animal Crossing fan comics which would eventually spin into a darkly humorous, twisted yet oddly wholesome deconstruction of kinks and emotional repression. Soon enough, it was rebooted and morphed into the understated, original masterpiece that it is today. Every page oozes with ethereal colours, a delicate yet decisive trait and subtle foreshadowing as a yet unclear narrative starts taking shape behind the surface of "cartoon animal adventures." A rewarding read for those who enjoy to obsess over every detail and pick apart allegories. It's the Thinking Man's TRAUMEDY, if you will.
Haus of Decline: Gay Comics by Haus of Decline
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes, all you need to create a widely appealing classic is a good set-up, a punchline and impeccable comedic timing, all of which encapsulated into the confines of a traditional 4-panel strip. Actually, now that I have typed it, that is one of the most difficult crafts to master. Haus of Decline is a ubiquitous work that has managed to achieve the coveted "Meme Status", swimming in the immediate periphery of your Internet experience. You might be aware of it thanks to that one Steven Universe joke that stands tall as the most succinct and accurate parody of that show. As of right now, I am yet to encounter a single strip that isn't a comedic slam dunk or at least chuckle worthy. If you enjoy a spoonful of irreverent, queer, scatological, sometimes personal humour in your breakfast bowl than this is the cereal box for you!
Molly's Future Mishaps by Peyton Partyhorn
Tumblr media
It's the year 2000, the Earth has blown up. Right before that, humans managed to send a rocket full of sea slugs to Europa, one of Jupiter's satellites. It is now the year 3000 on Europa. Molly the slug meets Jo, a sea bunny time traveller from the year 4000. After a soda-related debacle, they both wind up at the end of Time itself. The titular mishaps ensue. Molly's Future Mishaps presents an overly complex amalgamation of premises, each more outlandish than the last, that lays the foundation for what is, in essence, a straightforward character-driven piece. It explores a group of people attempting to finagle their way across Life, their feelings, anxieties, societal pressure, self-worth, many "What If's" and "What Could Have Been's", with timey wimey shenanigans serving as the backdrop for their reasonably scoped adventures. Their personal and interpersonal journeys keep the bizarre, somewhat nonsensical nature of the Universe grounded in a familiar space - in a manner not too dissimilar to that of a Douglas Adams' novel. In truth, the initial run of the comic mostly focuses on comedic high jinks, which tend to be hit or miss, but the writing improves dramatically when it starts exploring the characters' psychology and emotional hang ups. For me, personally, the turning point was the (inevitable) Time Loop arc, which I enjoyed for reasons that will become obvious if you know about my feelings for In Stars and Time. In short: this comic has a high-stakes Absurdist/Existential Sci-Fi premise that belies a refreshingly "Down-to-Europa" story about a bunch of 20-something cartoon slugs. It's relatable!
Dolmistaska by AngusBurgers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In many ways, this one defies description. You should just go read it. Seriously, go read it! It's great! Exceptionally well-drawn too! It looks like an underground Punk comic from thirty years ago. It lures you in with the understated intrigue of its unclear premise, its oppressing atmosphere, environmental storytelling, savvy use of lighting and shading, before dropping everything on you all at once. The protagonist is a non-binary cat person with gremlin energy and a knack for vehicle-related heists. Read it. You'll thank me later.
---
That would be all for now. There might be more webcomic recommendations in the future, whenever inspiration shall strike - or I get in a writing mood. Thanks for reading... and happy further reading!

Chest wounds: if they bubble, that's trouble so get em fixed on the double. Now allow me to lighten the mood with a little chest trauma humor. Traumedy, if you will.
- I knew a Mo Thorax once. He sucked.
- A chest seal is a valuable addition to more advanced first aid kits, or if you are a pirate burying treasure below sea level.
- Chest seals can be distinguished from chest sea lions by their lack of external ear structure, and the fact that their hind flippers do not rotate forward for dry land locomotion. 🦭
- Hastily removing an impaled object may turn your patient an em-pale-ed object 😨 (due to blood loss and/or lung collapse).
- Cardiac tamponade is a life threatening compression of the heart muscle by fluid accumulating in the pericardial sac. Cardiac tapenade is that but with a finely chopped spread of olives, capers, and anchovies.
Anyway, if you like comic, go check out the whole series on Webtoons. Feel free to like, follow, or drop me a message in the comments!
I promise, the jokes are better. 💀🍹🐐

The Violet Drewman, Violet
Tumblr media
Statistics
Aesthetic: Pretty
Age: 28 (Season One)
Alignment: Enactor
Badge: Spade
Color Type: Violet
Debut: Welcome to Dullsville
Effects: Flash Step (Violet can move at ludicrous speeds); Fire Starter (Violet has weak pyrokinesis that she chiefly uses to create smoke); Fleur Show (Violet can grow flowers over surfaces); Psychic Surge (Violet has mild telekinetic powers)
Family: Jasmine Oobay (Twin Sister); Tulip, Lily, Dahlia, and Rose Oobay (Sisters); Aster Oobay (Brother); Horton and Posy Oobay (Parents); Gordon Monade (Husband); Rosie Monade (Daughter); Scarlett Rohl (Aunt); Jet Rohl (Cousin); Dalton and Isabelle Monade (Parents-In-Law); Holden, Jordan, and Cordon Monade (Brothers and Sister-In-Law)
Rank: A (Primary Character)
Standout Features: Ponytail, vertical pupils, choker, power suit, wedding ring
Character Bases
Tumblr media
Violet’s facial structure and eye shape are reminiscent of Total Drama’s Courtney, but I don’t have that kind of space.
Development
Tumblr media
Violet, formerly Tracy, starts out with a more pinkish-purplish hue. Her earliest design has pigtails rather than a ponytail. Her personality emerges quickly, but she’s far less bombastic and articulated than usual. Throughout Rough Sketch the design grew more polished as she was increasingly written as the protagonist.
Right before Rough Sketch was canned to make way for the new continuity, Violet gained a more disheveled look. The series proper introduces her wedding ring, suit, choker, and more more gangly build. Her slight redesign flares her collar, changes her shirt, and gives her a build more believable of a “speedster” type of character, but otherwise remains the same.
History
Season One
Violet debuts in The Violet Act alongside the other five main characters. She’s the very first character to appear in this continuity, having apparently been fiddling with the camera’s controls until it begins broadcasting the episode. Throughout most of the early season, she’s largely seen overseeing the hiring of new employees and business procedures for ICT.
Tumblr media
Formblende marks the start of the “The More Things Change” A-Plot in which Violet finds herself in Headspace while lucid dreaming. She stumbles upon the eponymous being seemingly overseeing the creation of Ingrid and Geneva, only to be justifiably disturbed when she comes across them in her house in reality.
Walk the Dog picks up roughly a day later as Coco raises her concerns over the seeming cosmic rewrites occurring. Violet is initially skeptical, but quickly relents when she remembers the events of the previous day.
In Violet and Scarlett, her next major role afterwards, Scarlet shows up at the Oobay-Monade household. Violet is excited to see her aunt, although very briefly annoyed to see she had somehow gotten in minor legal trouble. The episode immediately after, Sykie, has Violet return to Headspace, where she overhears Sykie and Formblende conversing. The former finds her out immediately and ends her dream, prompting her to go to Chloe to borrow a notebook.
Tumblr media
After not having appeared in a while, Gordon reports Sky to her in Onward and Upward, the latter seeking a job. Violet accepts her, seeing a lot of herself in Sky. Traumedy has her learn more about who the Master Minds are, including the tidbit that she isn’t supposed to be in Headspace at all. She’s forcibly dragged back to consciousness and immediately reports her findings to Lyman, who suggests she uses her prior encounters to know when the next vision will come.
The Evils of Lies and Hate begins the season’s B-Plot, where she admits Landon into the company at his request.

hey as the resident dessa expert what song hits hardest irt the traumedy that is sisterhood. personally I think alibi or annabelle
Dude it is so funny you sent me this because I was just playing the Minnesota Orchestra rendition of The Chaconne in the car and being like goddamn why isn't everyone listening to this all the time.
That being said, it's "Annabelle". At least in "Alibi" they're on the same side
