I think the binary can be healed and balanced by learning from those that exist outside of it. I don’t think that expanding/redefining definitions or doing away with it entirely is necessary, it’s confusing and does more harm than good.

Why the fight for queer rights isn't over (it should be obvious, but to some people it isn't)
TW: transphobia and homophobia
Hi, Tumblr, this is Asmi. If you know me, it's probably as the Good Omens Mascot, which is flattering. I've found so much love and queer positivity in the good omens fandom, and the beautiful thing is how it's canon. Many people outside the queer community don't realise how crucial media and communities like this are. Right now since I'm on break from education, I'm on tumblr for most of the time I'm awake (which is not a lot, I nap more than Crowley). It's wild how different it is from the real world, that I live in at least.
I'm sure a lot of you might have had a similar experience to this: Basically, two people in my life, my bio father and my ex, both told me to my face that queer people needed to stop calling themselves oppressed and how now it's queer people who hold all the power and are oppressing other people. With all due respect, what the fuck.
I live in India, and being a trans guy who is bi and aspec, it's a cesspit. While I'm gendered correctly on Tumblr, and people are so loving and supportive, in real life even my friends who say they support me misgender me 90% of the time. Same with my family. In my previous college which I had to leave because of bullying by both the students and admin, even the queer students would misgender me (I told them I used they/them pronouns, because he/him would have been too unsafe, but even that they didn't manage). In the college I'll join next, it won't be safe for me to be out at all, at risk of losing opportunities and safety. Gay marriage is still illegal. Homophobia and transphobia is the norm. This doesn't even cover all the daily indignities like queerphobic jokes, casual discourse on whether or not we deserve rights, etc. Discrimination against aroace-spec people is rampant even within the queer community, worldwide.
And I live in an urban area, one of the largest cities in India known for its progressiveness and for being relatively safe for queer people. I am privileged compared to other queer people here. The story in other cities, in rural areas which make up most of the country, is far more horrifying. I'm unqualified to speak about anything other than my own experience, but if you can (if you are in a stable and calm enough mental state to handle the information, please put your mental health first) I'm sure there are first person accounts on the many forums.
The fight for equality is not over. It doesn't end with laws riddled with loopholes, it doesn't end even with laws that genuinely help the queer community. Aside from the huge problems of living safely and with access to equal opportunities and resources for people, we deserve dignity, peace, and the right to feel accepted and that we're not an abnormality. And so much more.
I haven't said anything that hasn't been said before, but it can't be said enough. To the queer people reading this, take all my love. We need to stand together, eliminate discourse over who is queer enough to be queer, and be the safe space that the world will not provide for us.
It's not over, and it hasn't been won by a long shot, but what matters is that we're fighting. Even existing as ourselves in a world that tells us it is a crime, is defiance and a step towards making this right.

There have always been those who use these terms interchangeably. What’s new is the boldness of those using it, and the distinction between Jews — a marginalized group worthy of respect — and Zionists — worthy targets of violence.  “Zionists are not Jews and not humans," read a sign from protesters outside the Nova exhibit.  The survivors of the Nova at the exhibition? It’s OK to retraumatize them, because they’re Zionists, not Jews. It’s fine to threaten subway passengers who are peacefully minding their own business, because if they’re wearing kippahs, they must be Zionists. A Jewish museum director, whose home was targeted with a symbol used by a terrorist group to mark their victims? It’s fine, we don’t need to worry about her safety, because she’s a Zionist. (Pasternak’s friends say she has a long history of pro-Palestinian advocacy.) What it boils down to: If we call you a Zionist, you deserve the consequences — whether they’re public threats, an invasion of your private life, or pure harassment. And if that behavior crosses the line from peaceful protest to aggressive antisemitism, well, Zionists deserve that too.
There's nothing new about this. "Zionist" has been the euphemistic slur for Jews since the Polish and Soviet "Anti-Zionist Campaigns" of the late-'60s, which purged Jews from leadership positions regardless of their personal stances on Israel. The Soviets invented the "science" of Zionology, which sought to connect Zionism to every social and political ill under the sun, a project that influenced the academic and activist habits of seeing a Zionist hand in Brooklyn gentrification. The Soviets and Poles printed "anti-Zionist" posters with such grotesque Jewish caricatures that Julius Streicher would have found them excessive for the pages of Der Stürmer. We have seen this all before, and no one made any effort to address this cancer of antisemitism on campus and among activists while it was still mere rhetoric.
Now we see the fruits of that indulgence of bigotry, the one bigotry permissible in the polite society of the ivory tower and social justice protest. The use of Jewish self-determination as a term of abuse that works as a get-out-of-opprobrium-free card for any who with to camouflage their antisemitic is a classic tactic, a transparent and disingenuous one, yet somehow remains successful from the classroom to the march to social media. For how much longer will this be tolerated?
Because I oughtn't have to remind you that anti-Zionism is antisemitism. The unique denial to Jews of self-determination in the land of our ethnogenesis is a double standard when other nation-states about in this world and so many desire the establishment of a Palestinian nation-state. Further, one cannot dismantle a Jewish Israel without causing real harm to half the world's Jews, who will again be subject to persecution and expulsion as a traditionally oppressed minority in the Middle East. One cannot wish that on a people and claim to have no antipathy for them. Dismissing such fears as hypothetical and hyperbolic after the ethnic cleansing of Jews from every other Arab country is not plausible deniability.
This is why the term "Zionism" is still important to Jews. It is a big tent, but at its core it simply demands Jewish national self-determination within the land of Jewish origin. There have always been many different Zionist philosophies, since well before the modern Zionist movement. Some have been religious, some national, some socialist, some reactionary, some pragmatic or even grudging, but they all share that core tenet above. That tenet means something that is not vague or impracticably broad: it means Jewish dignity, Jewish responsibility for our own safety, Jewish right to live as ourselves and to be masters of our own destiny. May these principles never be forsaken.

Customers in the country are reminded by the Bulgarian National Revenue Agency (NRA) that they have the right to withhold payment from a merchant/trader until they receive a receipt. This measure, aimed at preventing traders from concealing their turnover, has been in effect since the beginning of the year following an amendment to the VAT Act.
The NRA's reminder comes as they launch a summer control campaign, which will include checks to ensure merchants are issuing payment documents. Last summer, nearly 1,700 violations were detected in Black Sea resorts, with 433 instances of non-issuance of fiscal receipts, 30 cases of missing fiscal devices, and 362 discrepancies between recorded and actual cash amounts. Over 1,350 acts were compiled, and 280 establishments were shut down.
The most frequent violation involves failing to issue receipts at attractions, fast food outlets, restaurants, and bars. This practice results in hidden income and budget losses, affecting vital sectors such as education, healthcare, and social services. The VAT Law change allows citizens to protect their consumer rights, combat dishonest traders, and promote fair competition.
If payment is withheld and the trader still does not issue a receipt or issues a fake one, customers can report the incident to the NRA via the Information Center at 0700 18 700 and 02 9859 6801, or email [email protected]. The receipt also helps customers protect their rights if purchased goods are defective or dangerous and is necessary for exchanges or returns.
Rumen Spetsov, the NRA's executive director, urges customers to request a payment document when making purchases. If a merchant fails to issue a receipt, customers can legally withhold payment and report the incident to the NRA, helping to counteract income concealment and unfair competition, which harm both society and honest traders.
"Sofia Pride" Backed by 3 Bulgarian Parties in Call for Family Equality
The coalition of liberal parties "We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria-Spasi Sofia" (WCC-DB-SS) expressed full support for "Sofia Pride" and all family structures in a declaration at the Sofia Municipal Council meeting. Hristo Koparanov, a municipal councilor, read the declaration, emphasizing that every family, whether it consists of a mother and father, a single parent, or two partners, deserves respect. He highlighted the upcoming "March for Family" and "Sofia Pride" events, calling the opposition between these groups pointless and a false dilemma.
Koparanov stated that family is more than just a traditional structure; it includes single parents, two partners, and anyone people choose to build their lives with. The only type of family not supported by WCC-DB-SS is one that harbors domestic violence and inequality.
He emphasized the responsibility to listen to and protect citizens who feel wronged or live in fear, aiming to make Sofia a safe and accepting city. Koparanov called for ensuring the safety and dignity of all, particularly highlighting the importance of events like "Sofia Pride" in promoting equality and fighting hate speech and misinformation.
During his speech, Ivan Videlov from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) placed a large plush pink unicorn next to Koparanov, but Koparanov continued undeterred. He concluded by reiterating WCC-DB-SS's support for peaceful human rights events like "Sofia Pride" and the recognition of all family forms as valuable.

Peeta Mellark on prim from journal
October 4 75 DD
Prim she wants to talk to me I haven't seen her since the resource allocations of coin, she never left my side,and helped recover memores I otherwise would not have had. Prim was doomed in every reality either the capital kills her along with Mrs Everdeen,reaps her for the 3rd quarter quell. But she is more then the innocent lamb that she is portrayed as she is a warrior who survived the death of Mr everdeen, with her dignity intact. It was her sister that took the hit when she sold herself to cray. Though the fake romance that took place with Peeta and Katniss saved both our lives I did stuff to her sister afterwards rather then accept that it was a con. I also in accordance with my design as a mutt attacked her sister. Yet she is 12 perhaps she is innocent and does not know. But after all that Prim did for me I can't close her off. Her sister hates me so why does she want to meet with me? Is it charity from a 12 YEAR OLD! Yet she deserves respect, it isn't just about what she did for me, I've seen her in the hospital with many patients and she is brave and is mature for her age and is super smart. Does she want to find what she believes was the old Peeta. I won't go through what I did with Delly again never again! What happens with delly represents everything wrong with Peeta Mellark. Just as I was silent to myrna for false safety, begging her for food, I yearned for any tether to old Peeta and any human connection, and like all false realities Peeta constructed they were lies. I would rather be alone then suffer that again.That she did all this for a lie hurts. But I want to protect her as best as she can so the world does not take Prim's nobility away. I want friends who want to take to me for me not old peeta. Stand guard Peeta, Stand guard! Well howabout this: we see if she wants to be friends with the mutt that strangled her sister but who escaped the capitals evil will or if she merely pities me. I am going to tell her how Peeta died in the capital and exactly how I am trying to rebuild. I will also hint in a way appropriate to a 12 year old that things with Katniss were never what they were. Prim unlocks an openness from the respect I have for her almost like a little sister and I can't lie to her. But I am going to start light first to see if I should even go there. This nonsense of Prim being like my sister is all in my head. I was her patient she was determined becuase it was her first assignment and she thought it would help her sister.

Certified Racist T-Shirt
Title: Certified Racist T-Shirt: An Unacceptable Gift for Everyone Introduction In today's society, where inclusivity, equality, and respect for diversity are highly valued, the existence of items that promote racism is deeply concerning. Unfortunately, a disturbing example of this is found in the form of certified racist t-shirts being marketed as gifts for men and women. These offensive garments not only perpetuate stereotypes and discrimination but also undermine the progress made towards a more inclusive and tolerant world. Promoting Hate and Division The explicit branding of a t-shirt as "certified racist" sends a dangerous message, normalizing and even glorifying racism. Such a design fuels hate, division, and intolerance, which can cause significant harm to individuals and communities. It validates discriminatory beliefs and reinforces a toxic mindset that undermines the ideals of equality and respect for all. Impact on Individuals and Communities Wearing a racist t-shirt can have a deeply negative impact on those who encounter it. It can trigger feelings of fear, anger, and humiliation among individuals who have experienced racial discrimination, reminding them of painful experiences and further perpetuating their marginalization. This not only affects individuals on a personal level but also contributes to the larger societal issue of racial injustice. Moreover, the presence of these shirts in public spaces can foster an environment of racial tension, undermining social cohesion and promoting hostility. This erodes the sense of safety and belonging that every individual deserves, regardless of their race or ethnicity. It is crucial to remember that racism devalues the contributions and worth of individuals solely based on immutable characteristics, which is detrimental to our overall societal well-being. Responsibility of Manufacturers and Consumers Manufacturers have a responsibility to consider the ethical implications of the products they create. By producing and promoting certified racist t-shirts, they are actively contributing to the erosion of social progress, hindering efforts towards racial harmony. Companies should prioritize the well-being and dignity of all, ensuring that their products promote values of inclusivity and respect. Similarly, consumers play a vital role in condemning and rejecting racist merchandise. By refusing to support businesses that profit from hate, individuals can exert pressure on manufacturers to reconsider their production choices. Furthermore, it is crucial to educate others about the far-reaching consequences of racism and the importance of fostering a society based on acceptance and understanding. Conclusion The existence and promotion of certified racist t-shirts as gifts for men and women is not only morally reprehensible but also detrimental to the values we hold dear as a society. It perpetuates discrimination, amplifies division, and undermines the progress we have made towards creating an inclusive and equitable world. It is our collective responsibility to reject and condemn such items, ensuring that we uphold the principles of equality, respect, and justice for all. By doing so, we can contribute to a more compassionate and harmonious society, free from hate and discrimination.

Client Protection Principles in Microfinance
Client Protection Principles in Microfinance Institutions. Principles of Client Protection in Microfinance Providing access to financial services to millions of underserved individuals worldwide, microfinance has emerged as a potent instrument for financial inclusion. However, due to its rapid expansion, concerns regarding client safety and ethical practices have emerged. The Smart Campaign introduced the Client Protection Principles in Microfinance Institutions (CPPs) to address these issues. Albeit the Savvy Lobby has stopped activities, the SPTF (Social Execution Team) and CERISE have accepted the responsibility of shielding the CPPs, guaranteeing that microfinance establishments stick to these standards. We will discuss the significance of the fundamental principles of client protection in microfinance in this blog post.
Appropriate product design and delivery Microfinance institutions should make certain that the products and services they offer are designed and delivered with the customers' best interests in mind. This entails tailoring financial solutions that are appropriate for the circumstances of the clients by comprehending their requirements, preferences, and capabilities. Proper item configuration considers factors, for example, credit terms, reimbursement plans, and the client's capacity to reimburse without becoming overburdened.
Counteraction of over-obligation
Over-obligation is a critical gamble in the microfinance area, where clients might be helpless against numerous credits or shifty loaning rehearses. Microfinance foundations should practice dependable loaning by leading exhaustive appraisals of clients' reliability and reimbursement limit. Carrying out instruments to keep clients from becoming over-obligated, for example, credit limits, advance global positioning frameworks, and borrower training, is vital to shield clients from falling into an obligation trap.
Straightforwardness
Straightforwardness is a crucial rule in client security. The fees, interest rates, and terms and conditions of the products offered by microfinance institutions must be made clear and accurate. The costs, risks, and obligations of the financial services they are accessing should be fully understood by customers. Clients are safeguarded from hidden fees and deceptive practices when pricing and disclosures are open and honest.
Microfinance products' interest rates, fees, and charges must be fair and reasonable in order to be considered responsible pricing. Predatory practices should be avoided by microfinance institutions that exploit customers by charging high interest rates or hiding fees. Pricing ought to be determined by the actual expenses associated with providing financial services and supporting sustainable operations. In order to foster responsible financial inclusion and build trust, it is essential to communicate pricing policies openly.
Clients deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness from microfinance institutions. The significance of avoiding any form of discrimination, exploitation, or mistreatment is emphasized in this principle. Staff individuals ought to be sufficiently prepared to comprehend and maintain the freedoms of clients, tending to their interests and giving fitting client care. Fair treatment builds trust and long-term relationships between microfinance institutions and their clients.
Client data privacy is an important part of client protection. Client data privacy and confidentiality are important. Microfinance organizations should lay out hearty information security strategies and techniques to shield client data. Consent-based use of client data, secure storage, and appropriate access controls are all part of this. Regarding client security shields their touchy data as well as fabricates trust in the microfinance area.
Mechanisms for resolving complaints For the sake of client safety, it is essential to establish efficient channels through which customers can submit complaints and find solutions to their problems. Microfinance establishments ought to have available channels for clients to give input, report issues, and look for redressal. In order to ensure that clients' concerns are addressed in a timely and equitable manner, these mechanisms ought to be transparent, impartial, and independent.
M2i can assist MFIs in establishing frameworks, procedures, and policies to guarantee compliance with the Client Protection Principles.

Holy See Statement During The 67th Commission On The Status Of Women.
The Holy See is pleased to participate in this Sixty-Seventh Session of the Commission on the Status of Women and welcomes the opportunity to examine both the opportunities and challenges of technology and innovation for women and girls.
Tumblr media
As Pope Francis has observed, “even today, in many countries, women are considered second-class citizens… [and] are denied the opportunity to study, work, [and] employ their talents.” Education is essential for fostering societies which treat women and men equally. This begins within the family, the “fundamental group unit of society.” Parents can model healthy respectful relations between the sexes and positive models of socialization, including teaching digital safety skills. Protecting children online, particularly girls, requires providing parents with digital knowledge and online safety tools.
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) can create lifelong learning opportunities for women and girls. Although not a substitute for in person schooling, remote learning has enabled girls to continue their studies during emergency situations. Online learning can also offer flexibility for women to study while balancing work and family responsibilities. This includes older women, who often lag behind in access to technology and in digital literacy. Additionally, ICTs are particularly important for engaging women and girls in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Women and girls are ready to seize these opportunities, but they must be given the tools to do so. In this regard, we cannot overlook the importance of eradicating poverty in order to achieve equality for women and girls. Women and children are more likely to live in poverty than men, increasing the risk of violence and exploitation. Social protection programmes play a pivotal role in reducing inequality, which increases access to technology. Without a strong international commitment to ensuring that the benefits of technological advancement are shared by all, women and girls in particular will fall further behind in our increasingly digital world.
Innovation must be directed toward the good of the person, or it risks harming those it should benefit, with women and girls the most frequent victims. The purchase of women and girls for sexual use in sex trafficking and prostitution increasingly relies on ICTs. Technology has also increased pornography consumption, including by children, with algorithms feeding perverse appetites for violence against women. The abuse of children, most of whom are girls, to create such materials, is particularly heinous, but all pornography is immoral and harmful; accepting it is incompatible with respect for women and girls.
Equality for women also requires accepting women fully, including their unique capacity for childbearing. Rather than employers accommodating family life, women are expected to accommodate their employers, often through the use of contraception. The offer by some companies of risky “egg freezing” benefits for future (and often unsuccessful) fertility procedures similarly places the burden on women rather than their employers. Women who do become pregnant often face financial and social pressures, including son preference and disability prejudice, to abort their children. On the other hand, practices such as surrogacy reduce women, many of whom are poor and vulnerable, to their reproductive capacities, commodifying both them and the children they bear. All these practices undermine the value of women and the respect that they deserve.
Madam Chair,
The Holy See encourages “the progress of science and technology at the service of the dignity of the person and for an ‘integral and integrating’ human development.” Women and girls’ gifts and capabilities should be cherished and nourished, including in the areas of innovation and technology. The Holy See and the many institutions of the Catholic Church will continue to contribute to efforts to ensure that technological developments include and benefit women and girls and ensure respect for their dignity.
By H. E. Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, 67th Commission on the Status of Women “Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”

Embracing Equality: Promoting LGBTQ Rights in Namibia
The struggle for LGBTQ rights has been a long-standing issue worldwide, with many countries still grappling to fully recognize and respect the fundamental rights of the LGBTQ community. Namibia, a southern African country, is among nations that have been experiencing difficulty in accepting and promoting full equality for LGBTQ people. However, it is time to give all Namibians the rights and freedoms they deserve, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. In this article, we highlight some of the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community in Namibia and what can be done to promote their rights and safety.
Challenges faced by the LGBTQ community in Namibia:
Namibia is a conservative country with deeply entrenched societal and cultural attitudes against LGBTQ people. Same-sex sexual conduct is illegal, and members of the LGBTQ community are frequently subjected to harassment, discrimination, and violence.
Apart from the legal and social obstacles, the LGBTQ community in Namibia faces significant health challenges. Stigmatization and marginalization cause many individuals in the community to shy away from accessing healthcare services, leading to increased rates of sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, mental health problems, and other health issues.
How can we promote LGBTQ rights in Namibia?
The first step towards promoting LGBTQ rights is to create awareness and promote dialogue about the issues facing the community. People need to understand that LGBTQ people are equally human, deserving of respect, dignity, and protection from harm.
Education, especially among the youth, is crucial. By teaching young Namibians, we can break down the barriers of ignorance and prejudice that lead to discrimination and violence against LGBTQ people.
Legal reform is also necessary, including the repeal of laws that discriminate against LGBTQ people, such as the prohibition of same-sex conduct. Advocacy groups and human rights defenders must continue to push for legal change and ensure that LGBTQ voices are heard.
Future outlooks:
Namibia has made strides towards promoting LGBTQ rights, with the establishment of organizations such as the Namibia Diverse Women's Association and the Rainbow Project. However, there is still a lot that needs to be done to achieve full equality.
The most promising future outlook is the rising activism among young Namibians. The youth are more open-minded and accepting of people from diverse backgrounds, including the LGBTQ community. They have the potential to drive change and promote greater acceptance and equality.
Namibia, like other countries, needs to embrace equality fully. The LGBTQ community deserves to enjoy the same rights, protection, and opportunities as everyone else. It's time to create a society that accepts and celebrates diversity in all its forms. The Namibian government, civil society, and individuals need to take responsibility for promoting LGBTQ rights and end the discrimination and stigma. Together, we can make Namibia a place where everyone, regardless of their gender identity, is treated with dignity and respect.

Week 2: Compassionate Leadership
What is Jacinda Ardern's legacy and impact as a compassionate leader?
I think Jacinda Ardern's term as Prime Minister of New Zealand solidified her place in the collective minds of countless people worldwide as a shining new example of what a leader can be. Every decision she made proved how deeply she cares for the people of her country, and every decision was for the safety and wellbeing of all New Zealanders. One of the most telling and impactful images that comes to mind is that of Ardern embracing members of the Muslim community after the white supremacist attack on Christchurch mosques. Yes, there were crucial decisive actions that she took in the aftermath (more on that below), but it cannot be understated how healing a simple act of compassion and empathy can be for a community in pain.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, Jardern treated everyone she encountered with dignity and respect, and expected the same in return of those around her. This sets a wonderful example for girls (and, truthfully, everyone) everywhere to stand up for themselves and what they believe in. Jacinda Ardern's legacy is the most genuine example of what a deeply caring public servant looks like.
How would you define compassionate leadership? Can power and empathy coexist?
Not only do I feel that empathy and power can coexist, but I think that they should coexist. True compassionate leadership requires both; a leader cannot be afraid to make difficult decisions for the good of the community (such as Ardern's swift, decisive action on gun control and her bold handling of the COVID-19 pandemic), and must be willing to accept the responsibility the role requires of them. However, this does not mean that one should lead with a cold, iron fist. We are all human and all deserve to be treated as such. I believe you can make sound decisions with both your head and your heart guiding you. Thus, I'd like to reference the wise Brené Brown in my personal definition of compassionate leadership as someone who possesses a "strong back, soft front, wild heart" (https://onbeing.org/programs/brene-brown-strong-back-soft-front-wild-heart/).
Does the world need more female leaders? How could this change the world?
Yes, I absolutely think the world needs more female leaders! This ties into the growing ongoing conversation in the public sphere on the importance of diversity in leadership. Simply put, increased diversity (in this case, women in particular) in leadership will inevitably bring a variety of unique histories and points of view to the table, creating a vast, shared knowledge to guide us into a more equitable, harmonious future. Additionally, I think this could further improve the world by showing girls role models of women in positions of leadership, therefore expanding the opportunities girls envision for themselves.
Choose a leader, provide a photo, a key quote, and a paragraph about how their empathetic and selfless actions have helped to redefine power and compassion and contributed to significant global impact.
I've chosen the lovely Sir David Attenborough as my empathetic leader to discuss. He has a long career in nature broadcasting and nature conservation in which he advocates for protecting all species of plant and animal life as well as reversing climate change. In his narration, he lovingly and often playfully humanizes the animals we see onscreen, treating each one with dignity, reminding viewers that human beings are not alone on this planet and not the only ones worthy of respect. The compassion he shows for all of the creatures and plants on Earth equally is palpable as he uses his wildly successful platform to simultaneously entertain and educate. His position as someone with massive international influence allows him to not only educate home viewers, but also global leaders, delivering passionate speeches to organizations such as the United Nations, urging for international cooperation in combatting climate change and protecting wildlife. His altruism and love for nature is contagious, influencing ever-new generations to love, care for, and protect our dear planet.

"It's surely our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth." -Sir David Attenborough

the thing about Seth is that he is charming, good-looking, approachable, affable, self-deprecating and charitable - all those positive, likeable things. those are all accurate descriptors of who Seth is.
even rewatching, knowing what's coming, what horrific things he does, it's very hard not to like him.
he's so good with people. he sees the best parts of them and is a master at drawing that out and making people feel good about themselves. he uses that skill to genuinely help Raf, and even Josh (at least, at first.) he's funny, easygoing, and knows how to bring people together, to make everyone feel included and seen. he finds those on the edges of a group and brings them into the fold.
but once he's humiliated in front of the group - once he becomes the one on the fringe, even for the briefest moment - he completely snaps.
you can see it in his eyes and his body language, especially when Josh comes to do the same thing Seth usually does for others, trying to draw him back into the group. there is such intense rage and loathing in his eyes, such disgust for Josh's attempt at friendship. and it takes very little time for that rage and disgust to erupt in violence.
Seth is so enraged and embarrassed by this perceived loss of control - by the idea that people might actually see him for what he is, that his neediness and thirst for approval would put him in the exact same category as Josh (a dorky, awkward loser, the butt of every joke,) if it weren't for Seth's charm and his good looks - he commits a truly disgusting, unforgivable crime just to reassert that control of his sense of self and of his place in the social hierarchy.
it's horrible. truly disgusting. monstrous.
and yet, what Henry says to Raf about Seth is so true:
"you're not stupid for thinking he was great. 'cause a lot of him really is."
the good things about Seth don't excuse or cancel out what he does to Josh, or did to Julia. but neither do the bad things erase the good. Seth is all of the good things he seems to be before episode four - charming and funny and generous and supportive - but he's also a monster, an abuser, the kind of person we all generally agree deserves to live on the fringes of society. that is all true, all at once.
the boys' storyline is so interesting because they really had to contend with how to treat someone who does something unforgivable in a world where there are no courts, no cops or judges or jails, no authority to handle punishment or rehabilitation.
what rights does that person have, especially on a "lawless" island? is it acceptable for them to lose the right to a group when living alone is all but a death sentence?
what if they're your friend, and they've been there for you when you were low, and they've helped you grow and become a better person? what if they were one of your only friends in an awful situation?
and, above all else - what is the appropriate way to ask and answer those questions while still giving dignity, respect, and safety to the victim? how do you balance serving justice without perpetuating further violence?
could this have gone any other way? was there even another possible way to protect Josh (and everyone else) from Seth without exiling Seth and essentially condemning him to death?
I don't have answers for these questions, and I don't think the show comes to any concrete conclusions either. but god, what a fascinating examination of them.

The sound of the fanfare outside is muted. The heavy doors of the main room are shut.
Thor sits on his large steel, silver, and wooden throne. Normally, your own throne would have been moved into the room so that you could sit beside him. Today however, he wants you standing.
Loki stands on Thor’s left, his hands moving across his tablet at godly speeds. He’s busy. Always busy. While Thor has the final say, Loki sets everything up for him and comes to him with the choices that must be made.
He’s indispensable and both you and Thor know it. So, when the large doors are thrown open and Thor takes his hand off of your lower waist where he’d been massaging the knots away, as Ambassador Coates walks forward, you glare right at him and his judging distrustful look at the sight of Asgard’s Prince.
The music outside, large horns that sound more like a call to battle, slowly die and are completely cut off when the doors are shut. Just outside you know two Valkyrie are standing guard.
Inside, two more regular guards stand at attention.
“Ambassador Coates, I’m glad you saw fit to accept my invitation,” Thor says casually.
One wouldn’t know that Thor is angry. He sounds so welcoming. The charm he’s exuding is one you’ve never seen him use before but Loki doesn’t seem surprised by it. Instead, Loki’s lips seem to curve upwards a little in the teeniest smirk.
The Ambassador does as he’s expected and once he’s near the foot of the raised wooden floor where Thor’s throne sits, he gives a quick bow meeting first Thor’s singular eye and then your own blank gaze.
Keeping your anger in check is easy. You’re able to wipe your face of all emotion and it’s a skill now that you’re glad you learned in the orphanage you’d grown up in. Never letting anyone know how sad or hurt you are was key to your survival.
“Your Majesties,” the ambassador states, the irritation in his voice loud and clear for all of you to hear.
It looks like Thor’s plan to roll out the red carpet as if the ambassador were visiting royalty got his message across clearly.
“I hope I find you in good health? Are you faring well with the pregnancy?”
You don’t answer him. You simply stare.
“We’re well enough,” Thor begins. “Forgive me in my haste to get to the point, Ambassador Coates but as I hear it from my brother, you have been making it very difficult for Her Majesty the Queen of Asgard to meet with you, despite her warnings that what she had to share was imperative to the safety of Earth and human-kind.”
The ambassador blinks. He doesn’t attempt to speak or react in any other way than to show that he’s processing Thor’s words. All signs of irritation at his welcome gone.
“Would you say that is a fair statement for her having sent, what was it? Four emails and three phone calls?” Thor asks Loki.
“Seven emails and four phone calls,” he corrects.
“Right. Seven and four.”
“Your Majesty…”
“I think you have been under the impression that my marriage to my wife has been one in name only. She’s Queen but not really? Right? She has no power or authority? Is that what you think?”
Ambassador Coates swallows hard, sweat beading along his temples. He’s not a stout man. In fact, most women would think him good looking. Nothing to Thor or Loki, but for a human he’s handsome. His sweating in this climate makes no sense unless he’s suddenly stressed.
Maybe you shouldn’t feel bad but you do just a bit. You can’t imagine what he must feel being scrutinized by Thor, yourself, and Loki. Clearly he did something wrong and now he knows it.
“Your Majesties, I-I meant no offense. Unfortunately this is a busy time for myself and my colleagues and-”
“We have no time for your excuses,” Thor sits up straighter and draws his legs a little closer together before he licks his lips and holds his hand out towards you.
Taking it, you watch him get up and then he helps you sit before checking on you, “Better, cherub?”
You nod, looking up at him as he caresses the side of your head.
“The only reason you hold the job that you currently do is because my people and I chose to settle on Earth. You might say you owe it to us. Perhaps you’d still have been employed should we not have come here but from what I understand, your salary is considerably more than what it would have been were you in some other position.
“You are married and have children, too. Don’t you?” Thor asks.
“Y-Yes, Your Majesty.”
“So, it’s important to keep your job. Isn’t it?”
He says nothing, this time simply looking down at Thor’s feet.
“My wife is not just Queen in name but she has been exemplary in her devotion of ruling the people of Asgard at my side with honor and grace. The people love her. I’m not sure what made you think you could slight an Asgardian Queen but let me be clear. If our people should find out that there was such disrespect, believe me when I tell you that the loss of your job would be the last thing you’d have to worry about.”
“And just to be clear,” Loki cuts in as Thor’s taking a breath. “My brother is not threatening you. This is a statement of fact. We Asgardians are fiercely loyal and easily offended.”
You like that Ambassador Coates isn’t glaring at Loki anymore. The fear in his eyes is worrying, but you also know that your husband and brother would do nothing to actually hurt this idiot. They’re just making sure he knows where he stands.
Thor crosses his large arms across his wide chest. Though you don’t think he means it to be intimidating, you can see from the ambassador’s gulp that Thor’s minor flex has great impact.
Gods, he’s huge.
“As it just so happens, aside from being a Queen without fault to this kingdom, the Queen of Asgard has seen fit to continue to perform in her duties as the bridge between our two peoples. She refuses to let us make decisions for the human race and was attempting to contact you to warn you of impending dangers. And you, what was the phrase, love?”
“Blew me off.”
“That’s right, you blew her off. And yet we welcome you with respect and grace.”
“Your Majesties,” the ambassador begins, but Thor holds up his hand and he stops.
“Let this be a lesson in humility for you. I love Earth and for that reason alone, in addition to the fact that this is my wife’s home and now mine, we will forgive this lapse of judgement on your part,” you’ve never heard Thor sound more like a King than in this moment.
It’s also one of those moments where you really want to drag him back to the room and get him naked. He’s never been this attractive.
The ambassador bows his head, taking his punishment with dignity.
“Forgive me, your Majesties,” he begins to say something, but then stops himself.
“Speak your mind, Ambassador Coates,” Loki urges, seeing something you and Thor don’t.
“I merely wish to apologize for my lack of forethought. I was not the only one dismissing Her Majesty the Queen of Asgard but will be sure to rectify the behavior with my colleagues when I return.”
Loki smiles, turning his gentle gaze on you as he realizes that you were right. It wasn’t misogyny. Not on Ambassador Coates’s part. That might not be the case for everyone though.
“Perhaps I should schedule meetings with your colleagues so that we might have a quick talk about the expectations we have for our relationship going forward?”
Loki’s threat is veiled heavily, but Ambassador Coates still picks up on it and his face goes a little pale.
“I don’t think that’s necessary, Your Highness. I will pass along the sentiments, if you will let me.”
There’s a burning satisfaction in your chest. Something about watching Ambassador Coates finally show not just you but Loki the respect he deserves makes you so happy.
“My Queen?” Loki prompts you, looking to you to wait for your reply.
“I think we can give him a chance to express our disappointment for us. He is our ambassador. Isn’t that right Ambassador Coates?”
Coates looks relieved, pressing his hand to his chest as he bows his head to you again.
It’s a strange sensation to see the gratitude on his face and his posture relaxes as a result. You literally just did that. You gave him some forgiveness and it really does make all the difference.
“I will support you and the Asgardian throne with more fervor from here on out, Your Majesty.”
“Cool,” you shrug, reaching to place your hand on the back of Thor’s neck, absolutely beaming at him.
He chuckles and puts his hand back on your waist, giving you a gentle squeeze and shake.
“Are you happy, my cherub?”
You nod, unable to contain the smile that stretches across your lips and you lean into him.
“Good. My job here is done then. Now, I have some things to do,” Thor rises and moves around until he’s facing you and pulls you up into a chaste but loving kiss.
With a caress to your belly, he looks at Loki and nods.
“I’ll leave the rest to you and my Queen, brother.”
“Sif will meet you by the docks,” Loki nods.
“Wonderful. I’ll see you later, love. If you need me, just tell Loki and I will come running.”
“‘Kay,” you smile.
Thor turns back to your guest and moves towards him, clapping his shoulder as he passes, “Do better, Ambassador Coates. Do better.”
All three of you watch Thor strut for the large front doors. The guard opens it for him and when he’s out of sight, the doors shutting behind him, you move to take your seat on the throne. Loki scoots a little closer to your side but stands with his tablet ready.
“Now, I think we should get down to the reason I wanted to meet with you,” you start and Ambassador Coates stands a little straighter. “But...I don’t know about you but this whole towering over you sitting on a throne thing is not really my style and feels a little forced. Let’s go to my sitting room.”
Loki smirks as Ambassador Coates relaxes a little more and even smiles, “Yes, Your Majesty.”
As the three of you walk up the steps to the right of the throne room to climb up to the small sitting room that had been set aside for you and your private entertaining, you steal a few glances at Ambassador Coates.
He still looks a little rattled and you stroke your stomach, the long silk dress you’re wearing, ruffled skirt and loose waist giving it a soft flowing quality is still noticeable and Ambassador Coates steals a few glances.
“Didn’t think I was really pregnant?”
He blanches, “What? N-No, Your Majesty! I had no reason to doubt you.”
“It’s okay. A lot of people didn’t believe it until I came back from my little vacation. I just wanted to make sure that it would take. We’re all so dependent on this little one and a lot is riding on my having Thor’s heir quickly.”
“No one who has seen you rule since your marriage would doubt your commitment to this union, Y/N,” Loki assures you gently.
He’s your number one supporter and you’re so damn grateful for him.
All three of you fall into silence but with your heavy belly and your slow walk, it stretches on.
“I’m sorry about Thor’s enthusiasm to put you in your place,” you give Coates a small apologetic smile but he quickly shakes his head. “He can be a little passionate.”
“No, Your Majesty, the mistake was mine. I should have paid you the respect you deserved. It’s-You work in an environment for too long and you begin to adopt certain behaviors that you should know aren’t acceptable but when everyone is doing it and-I was wrong. I can’t blame Thor for setting me straight.”
“Thank you, for understanding,” you shrug.
“Thank you for not holding it against me and letting me do better.”
It takes only another few minutes to reach the sitting room and you make a beeline for the small loveseat before dropping into it and leaning back against the soft plush cushions.
“Whew, I probably should have done my research on how pregnancy would affect all aspects of my life before agreeing to it,” a joke and Coates gets it because he looks respectfully amused.
Loki scoffs, “With Thor, I doubt you’d have had much choice in the matter. He is also believed to be a God of fertility, you know?”
“Loki!”
The small shock on your face really makes Coates laugh this time and your neck, ears, and cheeks burn.
Not wanting to drag this meeting out for a long time you clear your throat and Loki sits down on the armchair beside you opposite Coates’s own seat.
“I should really be more formal, but I’m not kidding when I tell you that this pregnancy is taking a toll on me.”
“Think nothing of it, Your Majesty,” Coates assures you.
“I’m not sure what you’ll be able to do with this information and maybe it’ll be best if, with your help, you can get a meeting in front of both the United Nations and NATO scheduled for me to speak to them directly.
“Thor and Loki would be there with me, of course, but it was my idea to even bring this to your attention.”
“I will be of any assistance that I can be,” Coates nods, face serious and attentive.
“We wanted to wait until we had more concrete information to give Earth’s leaders but our Queen is adamant that an early warning is better than detailed information,” Loki explains.
“Is the Earth in danger?” Coates asks, worried now.
“Sort of,” you nod. “Truth is, we don’t know. What we do know is that there’s an energy signature that we’ve been monitoring for months. Almost my entire first year of marriage. What we do know is that the energy signal was strong enough to bring Doctor Foster here to look for an explanation and my brother-in-law has kept his eye on it too. It’s familiar to him and not unthreatening so we’ve been preparing watch stations across the globe. We have one in North and South America, Australia, almost every continent so that we won’t miss any kind of danger that comes falling from the sky.
“We don’t want a repeat of New York,” you look at Loki and Coates looks at him too but neither of you have any kind of judgement in your expressions.
Maybe a little for Coates, but he quickly turns his gaze back on you.
“I wanted to give the people of Earth time to prepare for that kind of attack. The Avengers are already on the case and have been helping build up a defense but they can only do so much. Their focus is going to be on the bigger fight if it comes to that. I want to give us a fighting chance on the ground where regular people are often the ones to get hurt and suffer from big threats like this.
“I don’t want the casualties to look like they have in the past when something or someone threatens us. So, I just want to give world leaders a briefing on what we’ve found, what we’ve built in defense, and give them the resources to keep track of what we’re keeping track of.
“We’re at a unique advantage with not only Asgard’s knowledge, technology, and resources. We’re still a growing nation and what we do have is lots of strength. I’ve been thinking about it a lot and while the Valkyrie have to stay here to protect my family, we have a sizable guard that can be split into a few regiments to send out to the places that will need it most and still have enough forces to protect New Asgard.”
Coates is thinking hard, then his hand dives into his pocket and he pulls out his phone, “I’ll start making calls and can probably have something set up the day after tomorrow. If the threat is serious enough to make you worry about us humans this much, I think the sooner the better.”
“It is serious enough,” Loki assures him. “Even if it turns into nothing, we would all rather have done everything we could to minimize damage to both the humans of Earth and New Asgard.”
“Then I’ll get started. Is there any kind of data that I should see in order to convince my bosses?”
You look to Loki and reach out, placing your hand on his arm, “Loki, take Ambassador Coates down to the dungeon and let him get a look at anything we’ve gathered in the monitoring station. You’ll forgive me for not coming with you, Ambassador Coates? I really can’t stand walking around much longer today.”
“Of course, please do not mind me,” he assures you, giving you a small bow.
“Shall I have your lunch brought in here?” Loki asks.
“Please?”
He nods and with a gesture at Ambassador Coates, leads the way to the door.
“When you’ve made any significant progress, I will be in here. Can you come and let me know?”
Coates nods, the phone now pressed to his ear, “As soon as I know something, Your Majesty.”
They leave you in an appropriate rush and you relax against the cushions of your sofa feeling like a small burden’s been lifting off your shoulders.
You’ve done your part now. You’ve warned your Ambassador, now it’s his job to convince his higher-ups and hopefully they listen.
Estrid does eventually come with your lunch and you eat slowly, thinking through your options for Coates and the rest of the governments of the world. Splitting the Asgardian army up isn’t ideal, but they pack a punch. Even just a handful of soldiers in a city would make a difference.
You finish eating and you finish your tea. You get up to walk a little around the sitting room but as the afternoon wears on, you start to feel suffocated inside and Estrid happily goes with you down to your gardens.
Most of your plants have been well taken care of.
“His Majesty made sure that we kept all of your plants healthy for you,” Estrid informs you, moving to walk a few steps behind you as you walk around with a small watering can.
His consideration brings a smile to your lips.
Thor really can be so sweet. So loving. You hate that some of the time from your first year was stolen by what happened with Jane, but it couldn’t be helped. He had to discover what it would mean to lose you and you had to learn that depending on yourself is still just as important married as it was when you had no one.
Maybe it’s even more important now? You can get lost in your relationship with Thor and while that’s super tempting, to have your world start and end with Thor and your married life together, you are still your own person.
You have goals for your career and shared dreams with him too. You’ve got your hobbies and Thor has his. Both of you needed the distance.
Despite that, even though you know that the space was good for both of you, even if it hurt like hell to get it the way you two did, you’re actually really happy to be back home.
As you reach over to water one of your taller butterfly bushes, you gasp and pull your arm back against your body as a small sharp pain rocks your senses and blinds your vision for a split second.
“Your Majesty?” Estrid hurries forward.
“I’m fine, Estrid,” you assure her, waiting another second to see if the pain will come back.
Reaching down you rub the spot on your tummy where you’d felt it and wonder if maybe the baby is just kicking especially hard today.
“Shall I fetch the doctors?”
“No, really. I’m fine, Estrid.”
You move to the next plant and water a few more as you head towards the small greenhouse with the Asgardian plants you’re still trying to perfect the care for but as you reach for the door, you double over as a shooting pain stretches across the same side as before then moves down onto the base of your belly.
The watering can falls from your hand as you reach out to brace yourself against the door and hits the floor with a clunk as the water goes all over your flats, soaking your feet.
“Your Majesty!”
Estrid races to you, hands placed on your back and arm to support you as she looks to steal a glance at your face.
With your eyes shut tight, you groan and whimper as the pain just gets sharper.
“Estrid…” it takes a moment to catch your breath. “Get the doctors.”
“Guard!” Estrid calls, forcing you to let go of the door so that she can lead you to a bench. “Guard, send for the doctor!”
“Thor,” you whimper, sitting slowly and gasping as the pain intensifies. “Get Thor.”
“I’ll send for him, my Queen,” Estrid assures you and now that you’re seated, she leaves you to run and hurry the guard.
“What’s wrong?”
“Loki?” you call breathlessly, searching for his face for the comfort you know it’ll give you to have him close.
“Here,” he calls out for you and hurries around the corner. “I’m here. What’s happened? What’s wrong?”
He hovers over you, leaning over, his hands carefully pressed to your cheek and the other on your stomach.
“It hurts,” you sob without tears, “Loki…”
“It’s alright,” he promises. “You and my nephew will be fine. Come on, put your arm around my neck.”
His certainty does help and you get your arm around him. With ease he squats down and lifts you into his arms and with you moves back into the palace.
~~~~~~~~~~
It feels like a long time when you open your eyes again. You’re dizzy a little and weak. Your body feels heavy and it’s a struggle to sit up.
Looking around, you realize you’re in your bedroom alone. The sky outside is dark and the room is dim with only the fireplace lit to cast a warm orange glow around the dark room.
“Loki?” you try, remembering him carrying you when he found you in the garden.
No movement.
“Thor? Estrid?” You’d sent her to get the doctors and to get Thor. Had the doctors come?
Thor’s favorite armchair is placed by your bed, angled towards you so he must have been in here sitting by you waiting for you to wake up.
With a heavy sigh, you realize that he must have been out of his mind with worry when he heard what happened. Is the baby okay?
You put your hands on your tummy and wait for movement. He does wiggle around a little. Normal for you and him and that makes you feel better about the pain that had come out of nowhere.
It takes you too long to get up and out of bed. You’re in your nightgown, a long simple piece with modern touches but it’s also very similar to some of the long flowing white ones you remember seeing in history books.
Taking extra time to stretch up onto your feet just in case the pain comes back, you breathe a sigh of relief when you take your first step and find that you’re okay.
“Oh, baby,” you reach down and rub the sides of your bump. “You scared me, rascal.”
You know that you should probably stay still. Staying in bed is probably what your Doctors suggested but the empty chair has you worried about Thor and what state he might be in.
So instead of staying where you should, you open your bedroom door and step out into the hallway.
The spots to either side where there’s usually a guard are empty.
You look up towards the other end of the hall and see that the two soldiers have moved to stand at the center of the hall, shoulders tense and obviously distracted. Further down, at what you think they must be staring at is a grouping of palace staff. People you recognize. Estrid stands among them, frowning at the small crack in the door through which pours a line of bright white light from the sitting room you share with Thor.
Did something happen?
As you pass the two guards the jump and hurry back to the sides of your bedroom door where they belong. Their flurry of movement must have drawn the attention of the others standing by the door. They also seem to jump, look shamed and worried, before they move away from the door and head in all different directions to get back to work.
One of the maids that passes you curtsies before she scurries off stealing a look of regret at you.
Estrid stands rigid, hands clasped to her front before she steps back a bit to give you room.
“What is it, Estrid?”
She doesn’t say anything. She looks upset, her lips fixed into a severe line, eyes full of anger as she shakes her head.
“Where’s Loki? Thor?” you check, stopping by her and she only looks at the door.
You can hear muted voices from inside and your heart begins to pound.
Is it the doctors? Are Thor and Loki getting bad news? The baby was just moving though!
Your baby has to be okay. Healthy even. Nothing was wrong before you came back home.
Clinging to your bump, you move towards the crack in the door and with the breath leaving your lungs in fear of what you’ll overhear you just go ahead and push the door open because eavesdropping hasn’t served you well in the past.
If something needs to be said, you want to hear it without hiding.
Of course, what you aren’t expecting to find is Loki facing you by the long sofa where Thor usually lounges, resting his head on your lap. Behind Loki, what must have given him that frustrated look on his face is Thor, Jane clinging to his arm as she finishes speaking the thought you just interrupted as they all turn to look at you.
“-can’t help it. I love you. I-”
The absolute fury that engulfs you is indescribable.
For one year-long second, you inhale and a million thoughts cross your mind. The one you grasp onto, in favor of the ones involving murder and hurt and violence, is the one of your baby.
This kind of anger is bad for him. You can’t let it consume you. Not when you need to stay good for him.
Loki looks down at his feet, disappointment and shame overcoming his pale, handsome features.
Thor quickly jerks his hand out of Jane’s grip and moves towards you but stops when you speak only a few feet away.
“Jane?”
She swallows hard, then frowns, “I only came to warn Thor that the readings have gotten stronger. I-”
“I don’t care why you’re here. I only care that you are here. You aren’t welcome in my house, near my husband, or on any piece of land in this Kingdom,” you take a step towards them and stop as you stroke your belly to remind you to keep calm. “I want you gone. Out of my home, away from my people, and if you trespass here again, I’ll have you thrown in jail. You aren’t welcome in New Asgard.”
“You can’t ban me from an entire Kingdom,” she argues, moving forward towards you.
“Try me,” you warn. “Out of respect for what you meant to Thor in the past, I’ve kept your name clean. I haven’t told anyone what you tried to do here, but here you are trying again. Now either you want me to trash you, or you seriously can’t take a hint.
“We don’t want you here.”
“Thor invited me himself, if he didn’t want me here, why would he do that?”
You grind your teeth, again stroking your tummy, “You’re right. I don’t know why my husband would invite you here when I have made it very clear that you aren’t welcome. Whatever the reason, he and I will discuss it together, because we’re married. Husband and wife. Until the day I die, at least, since he’ll outlive me by two thousand years.
“And whatever you two had in the past is gone. So, get out or I’ll have you thrown out.”
She opens her mouth to argue and you take two steps towards her, “I might be pregnant, but I can still do plenty of damage in the minute that it’ll take Thor and Loki to pull me off of you. Please, say something. Please, please I beg you. Give me an excuse. I have a really bad temper and I am dying to express myself. Please.”
Jane turns towards Thor, waiting for some kind of rebuttal from him but he’s got his eyes trained on you and you alone. The shame on his face, the agony of what you finding them all here might mean is not lost on him.
When he doesn’t say anything, Loki clears his throat, “I think it’s time to go, Jane.”
His urging helps and with a look of hurt and disbelief, she tears her eyes off of Thor and stomps out past you.
You watch her go, Estrid scurrying after her to lead her out the back instead of the front where she might be spotted.
“Loki?”
He turns to you, waiting.
“I don’t want anyone to know she was here. Anyone other than the group of palace staff that was standing by the door fucking listening to what was being said in here. Can you get Heimdall and send her home that way?”
“I’m on it,” he assures you and hurries past you, disappearing into the palace.
“I-” Thor begins.
“Don’t!”
He shuts his mouth.
“Not here.”
Turning, you lead the way back to the bedroom and the guard opens the door for you, Thor following closely behind.
As the door shuts you don’t stop until you’re sitting on your bed, hands stroking your belly as you shut your eyes and try to calm yourself.
“I asked you for one thing. One thing, Thor. I asked you not to make a fool of me. Seven people from our staff were listening to you and Jane. Seven! By tomorrow that’ll be twenty and by the weekend the tabloids will have picked up on the story.”
“I’m sorry,” he starts but you growl in frustration.
“I stood in front of our people and told them that Jane Foster was not welcome in our Kingdom and you walked her right in! I-I can’t do this. I can’t do this right now.”
You get up and point at the large doors.
“I need you to get out. I need space and I don’t care why you let her in. I don’t care why you’d make me look like such a stupid fucking joke I only know that you did and I’m done. I need you out. Don’t come looking for me. When I’m ready, if I’m ever ready to talk to you again, I’ll find you. Until then, leave me alone.”
“Cherub-”
“NO! You don’t get to do this shit, Thor-You don’t get to undermine me and bring that woman back into our lives and still get to explain yourself after she lied to you about being pregnant, and making a mockery of our marriage. You don’t get a say. You get out of my room, you keep away from me, you wait until I’m ready to hear you. Until I’m not angry anymore. Until I’m not hurting anymore.
“I don’t understand what it is about this woman that you just-can’t you see what she is? What she’s done? Don’t you understand why she can’t be here? Don’t you get-You know what? Just get out. I don’t care. I don’t care if you get it or not. Get out.”
“Y/N, please, I-”
“GET OUT!”
The silence that follows your outburst is interrupted only by the crackling of the fire. In the dim light, Thor’s face is grave and broken. You can’t feel bad for him though.
As much as you love him, as much as you wish this hadn’t just happened, as much as you hate to see him hurt, you can’t ignore the pain in your own chest, drowning you again in betrayal.
This is why you’d wanted to keep your distance. This agony is why you’d wanted to keep him at arm’s length.
This is why you can only depend on yourself.
Eventually, Thor bows his head and with heavy feet, he leaves your room shutting the door behind him leaving you to sob and throw pillows in anger.
Tumblr media
This meme is such bullshit. Especially the way it's been going around among South Asian communities is just sooo grossly queerphobic.
Repeat after me:
There are children in rural regions of South Asia who do not have reliable access to basic necessities like safe running water, electricity, food and shelter AND are struggling with their sexual orientation, gender dysphoria, or other LGBTQ+ identity whilst living in countries with colonial British (ie sexist, homophobic, transphobic) laws—at the same time. They don't have basic physical needs OR mental and emotional needs met. And they have always existed among us.
Netflix doesn't always have great queer rep—but it popularized shows with queer rep in deeply bigoted countries. It humanized queer people to a miraculous degree in geographical areas in which progress has been frustratingly slow.
Netflix made western queer people visible and undeniable.
So South Asian bigots are now doing what they do best: They’re trying to gatekeep who can identify as LGBTQ+. They’re trying to reframe queer identity as some sort of privileged activity that only white people can indulge in. They’re trying to force the narrative that it’s, like, so ironic for South Asians in formerly oppressed countries to be watching characters struggling with gender and sexuality. Like it’s the same thing as watching The Kardashians for entertainment. Absolutely irrelevant to Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani lives.
I’m an incredibly privileged South Asian woman. I went to a good school and had access to books to read and learn about the LGBTQ+ community, among other things. (I pirated them off the internet.) My parents have been supportive of my moving abroad and funding my incredibly expensive education. (Fellow desi people will understand that this is a Big Deal.) My family will, however, not be accepting of my bisexuality or my girlfriend, who is part of the healthiest relationship I’ve ever been in and perhaps is the love of my life. Her parents are a lot more conservative than mine. The number of LGBTQ+-affirming people we know from our home country is in the range of single digits. Someday, we will have to decide whether we want to continue being with each other and get cut off by nearly everyone we know and quite possibly put our lives at risk if we ever go back to our hometown again. (There are a big number of bigoted vigilantes there quite willing to gang up on people they don’t like and murder them. Our laws criminalize homosexual acts.)
It’s either that or simply break up and find men that our families favour to marry. (Muslim for me, Hindu for her, well-off and pretty and able-bodied and educated for both of us.)
My identity has the potential to jeopardize my entire life, and my mental health has taken a huge turn for the worst because of all this. We’ve had to overcome so much together. It’s so unfair. As healing as my time here has been for me, I can’t bear living in America sometimes. I can’t bear witnessing all of this freedom and acceptance and not knowing if it can ever truly be mine.
I can’t imagine what it’s like for those less privileged than me, who are alienated, bullied, abandoned. Who have to resort to surviving through any means possible. My heart goes out to you. I think about you. I want to live to write my biography and hope it will reach the next generation. I want to hear all the stories that were never told. I wonder how many of us have been erased, how many more have to be sacrificed for decades to pass and for us to finally be given the dignity and respect we deserve.
You deserve to be here. You deserve to explore yourself and find out who you are. You deserve to exist and be happy. You deserve that just as much as you deserve safety, security, a roof over your head, food on the table, and loved ones surrounding you.
Inner Circle
The bastard-born warriors, the Illyrian half-breed, the monster trapped in a beautiful body, the dreamer born into a court of nightmares … And the huntress with an artist’s soul.
The Inner Circle, bright and fierce and carefree. A dashed court of hope who met beneath the mask of moonlight, who refused to bow their heads, who wept into the cradle of their hands the first time they heard the word “family.”
Rhysand’s most trusted, the group of lethal warriors taking point at every battlefield. The same lethal warriors who lived together in a townhouse, arguing over the night’s dinner, setting up fortresses of pillows and blankets in the sitting room.
The world saw them as monsters.
The world didn’t see them cooking breakfast together, didn’t see Mor laughing with her feet propped against the table, or Cassian swearing brightly as he burned slices of toast, or Azriel and Feyre sipping their tea and grinning, or Amren whacking a laughing Rhys over the head with her dressing gown. The world didn’t see them taking care of each other, looking out for one another, protecting and defending their family.
Family. It’s still such a precious word.
Lovely Morrigan found a house of people who love her, who waited for her opinion on warfare and politics, who listened when she said “No, I don’t feel comfortable.”
Brilliant Cassian discovered his heritage didn’t matter to this group of snickering warriors in pajamas. He was still important, even if he was a bastard. He mattered.
Wonderful Feyre set down her knife for the first time within those walls, allowed her defenses to drop. She was loved, and it was a miracle, that love. She had friends who would never allow her to wander into the forest alone again.
Caring Azriel was accepted without thought, drawn into the tangle of snowball fights and laughter instantly, admired for his mind rather than his body. He returned to the light after so many years in the dark, dark, dark.
Fierce Amren was not only a monster when she was in the townhouse; she was a teacher, someone to learn from, an object of respect. She couldn’t hold back her grin the first time she received Solstice gifts.
Proud Rhysand was no High Lord amid the gales of laughter and teasing. He was a brother, the person to come to for quick healing or a last drink before bed, or sometimes a comfort when the terror won out.
Rhys’s night was full of stars, each one named for a family member. His darkness was tangled in light. He lit the lamps at night, tended to the fires himself, chased every wisp of fear and hurt away.
They had only each other, a final blockade between Velaris and the worlds beyond. It was enough, they said.
They protected each other, not just while sparring or hunting, but from the little dangers. Amren always dimmed the roaring fire when Azriel’s eyes grew too haunted. Rhys would began chattering loudly whenever idle talk of the Hewn City reached their ears outdoors.
When they were young, they swore an oath to put each other above the world.
And so they did.
Cassian stood before Feyre and told her it was okay, she could take her guilt out on him. He held her when she wept.
Rhys gave his own life for his family’s safety, his body and sanity and dignity, time and time again.
Azriel positioned himself before his home, a final defense, and he would not move, not with those brilliant lights inside.
Feyre forgot her terror and hatred to save those who had shown her such kindness, who made her feel so loved.
Amren died willingly for the group of star-shine bright warriors who chose her gifts with such care and precision, who did not think her a beast.
Mor went up against the female who rent her brother into such misery, who had abused her High Lady for years.
Not a monster, not at all. Just a sister trying to do her best.
When the Inner Circle said they would defend each other, this did not exclude a single soul. Any male or female who hurt them unforgivably was at fault.
Rhys and Mor saw their family struggling, and they were furious. We loved them for their devotion; don’t you dare turn on it now.
“Family,” Cassian told Mor once, drizzling chocolate onto a stack of banana cakes, “odd, isn’t it? That those who do not share your blood might love you all the same? That they might protect you, die for you?”
She ruffled his hair, and he yelped. “You know I’ll always protect you,” she said with a wink. “Got to even the score some day.”
Mor always, always, always remembered Cas defending her from day one.
And so, when Nesta Archeron began to sling insults at him, ruin his pride, shred his trademark grin until it was thin and weak, Mor never forgave her. Nesta liked hurting people, thought it amusing, but Mor didn’t think it at all worthy of laughter when she watched the dregs of Cassian’s smile fall. Nobody was allowed to hurt her family, fucking no one.
When Feyre told Rhys of her sister’s neglect, the fury and rage that had settled within Nesta’s very bones, Rhys never really forgot that day’s thought. He tried to love Nes for Feyre’s sake, but every time he closed his eyes, he saw the tears pouring down his mate’s face, her misery at her sister’s constant hurt.
When Amren fingered the jewels gifted to her for Solstice, she could only see Nesta standing in the doorway, snow turning her hair damp, the tentative smile on her High Lady’s face, the achingly eager bark of Cassian’s laughter. She cared for Nesta awfully, but you could care for someone and see their faults.
And Nesta Archeron had her faults.
She had her wonderful, golden moments, as well. Times when the gratitude on Rhys’s face was painstaking, days when Feyre’s grin of delight would light the darkest corners of the world, bare seconds when Cassian could hardly contain his giddy chuckles.
Nesta bent her knees, her head, apologized for her bitter comments and harsh treatment of the Inner Circle. She admitted she had been wrong, not in refusing to kiss their asses, but disdaining to offer them so much as a lukewarm glance. She did not apologize for her trauma, but for the cruelties she had dealt before the fact.
And they forgave her.
So, I would like to believe somewhere, Feyre is curled up at one end of the sofa, gesturing wildly with her hands as she tells a story to Cassian, who tries to get sips of tea into her mouth when she pauses for air. Amren sits primly in a hideous pink loveseat, ropes of ruby slung around her throat, flipping idly through a thick tome. On the carpet, Rhys and Azriel sprawl out, heads together like schoolboys, discussing the newest bit of information the latter’s shadows have hastened to report. Mor lounges on the other side of the couch, Nyx cradled in her arms and giggling, his chubby fingers grasping at a laughing Nesta’s dangling earrings.
They all deserve their peace so much, and I so often cry thinking I will never know that love, that joy. But they do, so I will be happy for them, and I will defend them as I hope they would defend me.
Every last one of them has fucked up, and will do so again.
Every last one is worthy of love, of warmth and kindness and respect.
I wholly believe they will build a gentler world, a sweeter world. One where Helion can winnow to their door with his face bright instead of miserable. One where Tarquin might send gifts for Nyx to their home instead of murder reports. One where Feyre will let Nyx play in the garden without a battalion of guards.
The Inner Circle isn’t perfect, but they love each other.
They aren’t monsters, just a group of dreamers who have never known reprieve from their nightmares.
