pssst the search engine mojeek has helped me find ugly html web pages (whether they're useful is up to you, though they do have their own ranking algorithm separate from Google's so the results aren't designed for your corporate approved information bubble)

I don't know if it's the depression speaking but these days I find it incredibly hard to enjoy anything about the Internet.

Literally every website has become a thousand times more inconvenient, bloated with promoted or recommended shit, stupid UI/UX changes pushed by out of touch billionaires.

The tipping point this week was Google changing the regular "Web - Images - Videos - Etc." tabs with fucking stupid ever-changing search suggestions, making the site a thousand times less accessible and so much more annoying to use

I'm tired. I want forums back. I want ugly html pages that give useful information back. I want to connect with other Internet users in a meaningful way again. Fuck modern corporate UI design. Fuck social media. I want out.

Apparently much-needed reminder that reposting artists' art (by saving the images or screenshotting them and reuploading them yourself) on other platforms without the artists' expressed permission and without credit is theft and an insult to their passion and craft. You are profiting (in views, in attention, in feedback) from someone else's work and ideas, who do not get that feedback for sharing their creation.

With Firefox having AI added in the recent update. Here's how you can disable it.

Open about:config in your browser.Accept the Warning it gives.Search browser.ml and blank all values and set false where necessary as shown in the screenshot, anything that requires a numerical string can be set as 0 .Once you restart you should no longer see the Grey-ed out checkbox checked, and the AI chatbot disabled from ever functioning.

whats shambles?

A shamble (or shambles) is a magical object from the Discworld book series by Sir Terry Pratchett. They were introduced in "The Wee Free Men," the first book in the Tiffany Aching cycle.

Shambles are used by witches for a variety of magical uses. They can detect or amplify magic, send a spell, protect a dwelling, or really whatever is needed. (Some shambles are also purely decorative, because a proper witch ought to maintain a certain level of ambience. Unless, of course, your name is Esmerelda Weatherwax, in which case the darn things just get in the way.)

There are no hard and fast rules as to what EXACTLY a shamble should look like, or even what it should be made of, only that it must be able to hang like a wind chime and must contain something living (or once-living) at the center).

A capable Discworld witch should be able to put together a shambles from whatever materials are at hand and the most powerful and effective shambles are the ones you make when there is the greatest need for them. It's all about capturing the moment and following one's intuition and sense of need during the construction.

I may or may not have had shambles in mind when I created the tutorial for Witch Webs for one of my books, but they certainly capture the same feeling - a woven hanging with no definite pattern which can include whatever feels right and may be used for whatever purpose one has need for at the time. Plus they make fabulous decorations.

I use Bibisco because it's open source, which means the code is publicly available. The transparency verifies that it's not doing anything shady with what you put into it. And for a one time payment you can get the supporters edition which has extra features.

(speaking of which I also use F-Droid, an free and open source app store for Android, if you want to make anything like your camera or gallery or notes app open source in these trying times)

This Google Drive AI scraping bullshit actually makes me want to cry. My entire life is packed into Google Drive. All of my writing over the years, all of my academic documents, everything.

I’m just so overwhelmed with all the shit I’m going to have to move. I’m lucky to have Scrivener, but online data storage has been super important as I’ve had so many shitty computers, and the only reason I haven’t lost work is because Google Drive has been my backup storage unit.

My partner has recommended gitlab to move my files to - it seems useful, and I can try and explain more about what it is and how it works when I get more familiar with it. I’m unsure if it’s a text editor, or can work that way. He was explaining something about the version history that I don’t quite understand right now but might later. I’m just super overwhelmed and frustrated that this is the dystopia we live in right now.
