Talia found Yasmin's hide out only two days after the bomb.
It wasn't easy. Yasmin had hidden herself well - her monthly reports had never mentioned an acquaintanceship with Vladimir Masters, the absolute gall of that girl - in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin. She bypassed the few security measures with ease, eventually finding her daughter sitting at a kitchen table, hyperventilating.
"What happened?" Talia's voice was cold and demanding.
"The-" Yasmin gasped before stealing herself. "The Fentons are dead."
"I know the Fentons are dead." Talia circled the girl. "One split navel to throat, the other strangled. What. Happened?"
"The Fentons discovered their son was a Meta. Specifically, they thought he had been replaced with the extradimentional species they study." She took a deep breath. "By the time I had discovered their actions, Daniel was... dissected on a table."
Talia closed her eyes. She knew from Yasmin's reports that she'd been acting as the Fenton child's primary caretaker since her adoption and a fondness had developed. "Yasmin-"
"Don't, Mother." She snapped. "Don't act like this is anything less than a tragedy."
"I know-"
"He was a child-"
"Everything's been taken care of," Talia said. "As far as the authorities are concerned, Jasmine Fenton died in that explosion you caused. You need to return now-"
"No!" Yasmin bolted to her feet, glaring at Talia. "He's dead, Mother! An innocent child, the child I raised as my own, is dead because I couldn't protect him! Don't you dare try to sweep this under the rug like... like Danny was something shameful! I'm not leaving! I have to-"
Time Out.
Yasmin shut her mouth mid-sentence, giving Talia time to convince her off her self-destructive path.
"What happened to Daniel is a tragedy, Yasmin. But wallowing in grief and what-ifs only leads to further pain." Talia sighed. "The Fentons and the research you were so fascinated with are gone now. You made sure of that. It's time for you to return home and put that knowledge to use."
Yasmin stared down at her hands. Odd that Talia hadn't noticed, but Yasmin's hands cradled a small, dark blue jewel, polished into a smooth, oblong oval. It glittered under the candlelight, like stars in the sky.
Yasmin swallowed the rock and spoke, refusing to acknowledge what she'd just done. "You are right, Mother. The time of Jasmine Fenton is gone now." She stared straight at Talia, no trace of fear in her gaze. For a moment, Talia wondered where her child had gone. Yasmin never met her eyes unless prompted to when she was growing up. Now she was met with a younger version of herself with cheap dyed-red hair, with the same level of determination that made Talia the Right Hand of the Demon Head. "I will mourn for Danny... on my own time. For now, what is my mission?"
Talia studied her daughter. There was a reason why she'd hidden the girl so far out of the way of her Father and her son. Yasmin was a strong fighter, but had her father's heart, despite her willingness to kill. She'd always reminded Talia of a bodyguard rather than an assassin, but Yasmin wanted to go her own way, wanted to study everything. For years, Talia had indulged her daughter, but now it was time for her to return to the fold.
"For the next month, you will be training to remove any weakness the Fentons may have left in you. After that, you will be guarding an ally for me."
"Which ally?"
"A boy a few years older than you, a son of the Bat." Yasmin didn't react to the mention of her father. Good. "His mind is infirm, but by the time you finish your training, he will be ready to strike a blow against Gotham. You will act as his guard during his training and act as my spy while he's in Gotham. Do you understand?"
For a moment, Yasmin's hand brushed her stomach before she forced her fists to her sides. "Yes, Mother. I will do as you ask."

Inspired by a post i just saw, here is the only correct take on a Batfam Atla au(Tw for things present in Atla canon such as racial and misogynistic violence)
@mayameanderings @desi-pluto
Duke is the Avatar-No ifs or buts,he's literally THE SIGNAL OF HOPE FOR GOTHAM
Jason is a Fire Nation commoner who got adopted by the Fire Lord after his parents' death
The Fire Lord is Black Mask and Talia is Ursa but it's not shipping because EW,she's got no positive relation to him and was instead Jason's firebending teacher he thought BM succeeded in killing in his rage after finding out she was trying to adopt him but she actually escaped and got amnesia and a matching burn scar to Jason's but only the opposite side because she's his other half his father burned the bridge to
You know the drill-Jason's sent to capture Avatar Duke,Duke redeems him with his little shit sunshine boy swag without even trying, they are hashtag brothers in every universe.Lil bit more on Duke is that he's actually a Fire Nation Avatar but of the black etchnic subgroup in the comics and his parents were driven mad by spirits sent as 'punishment' for their 'impurity' by General Joker and this is why he is a nomad at the beginning, having fled the Fire Nation because he was sick and tired of still being the problem child at school but getting no comfort this time
(Note:Jason is part of this subgroup and for self-indulgence,every other element has their own black etchnic variant too)
Stephanie is an Airbender-Air Nomads are objectively the best part of Atla so she deserves it.She's tibetan AN and black AN mixed and is pretty much an Aang and Ty Lee fusion-Both in design and personality. Her plot is getting tangled up with Duke and Cass as the og trio when they end up at her temples and she ends the series as the Earth King's consort(that king being Cass)and an ambassador but beforehand spends her time doing anti-imperialist war crimes
Cass is the daughter of the Cains, who lied to everyone about her being mute so they could train her to be the perfect submissive obidient daughter only for it to be blasted back in their face as she learned Earthbanding at the tutelage of badgermoles since they couldn't speak either and she became an underground pro-bender as 'The Silent Bandit' to make money for herself to run away from home and her first instinct when she made enough was to go to the Air Nomads for safety. This more or less worked in the end as she ended up getting crowned Earth King over the actual bloodheirs
Tim is a nonbender who knows chiblocking, the last skill Janet taught him before she died and he used it to avoid getting bullied but isolated himself from other kids as a result because they thought he was a freak. He accidentally joined the main gang when they visited his hometown in the Fire Nation and helped them blend in and they went on an adventure where they gave him honorary member status and he became an official one when they returned
Dick is a trans waterbender and she's their mentor who joined in on their travels because she wasn't about to let a bunch of kids run around fighting fascists without an adult around so they'd have backup and someone to take care of them. She herself was the leader of the Teen Titans,a resistance team, but retired after having her bending taken away and it's returned to her by Duke a bit into her time with them. She leaves Roy to take care of the tribe and when they reunite,he pulls her into a passionate kiss as a confession in front of the whole Duke's Court(their team name)and they have your typical grossed out kids reaction and after this he becomes the Team Dad to her Team Mom
Damian is also trans and named Yasmine and here comes the big previous Avatar plot twist:It was actually Talia, who is of arab and chinese Earth Kingdom descent and not Fire Nation!!Part of the BM tragedy is that she died during childbirth due to Fire Nation induced sickness and this manifested in a Spirit World fiasco that ended with her being ressurected but no longer the Avatar because her soul'd been passed onto Duke by then and she was given a new one and her being lied to about Yasmine being stillborn so she'd stay in the FN.Yasmine's a Talia Warrior and does her best to uphold her mother's legacy due to all the thing's she'd been told about her
She joins Duke's Court, they find Talia again,Duke learns how to cure his parents with Avatar powers and they live happily ever after despite the struggles,Jason gets Lightningbending and white fire as symbolism for healing his inner child and the ages are Duke and Damian-12,Stephanie and Tim-13,Cass-14,Jason-17,Dick and Roy-25 and Talia-40s

I don’t fancast often, since I’m so very particular about it, but I think I’ve found my potential Talia al Ghul.
Yasmine Sabri.
Tumblr media
Honestly, I don’t know much about her, but for some reason, I feel more drawn to her than anyone else when it comes to Talia’s aesthetic.
(Also, you be the judge on whether or not her voice sounds like “sun-warmed honey.” lol)

Note
Do you have suggestion for an Arab actress that could play Talia in the big screen? So far she has been played by a white actress in The Dark Knight Rises and a Filipino actress in the show Arrow, meanwhile the fandom usually just fan-casts random Arab celebrities who probably can't even speak English and I just want to know if you know any English-speaking actress who are of Arab descent that could play her? Since that would be the most realistic choice
An actress of Arab descent that speaks English and can do Talia al Ghul justice if she played her? Say no more, here is my list.
1- Aiysha Hart
Tumblr media
Might as well end the list before it starts, because this right here? This is the perfect Talia al Ghul. Aisha Hart is a 29 years old (as of 2020) Saudi-British actress, English is her native language (although she does have a British accent, but I’m sure she can hide that) and she has been acting for 7 years now with staring roles in BBC’s Atlantis and New Blood, as well as a bunch of other films. Honestly it doesn’t get better than this, you got the looks, the acting and most importantly the ethnicity right. If Talia is going to make an appearance in any DC films or shows, then I want this woman playing her.
With that being said, I understand that some people might have different opinions, so here are 5 other Arab women who could also play Talia al Ghul in a movie/show (all of them are actresses and all of them can speak English BTW)
2- Yasmine Al Massri
Tumblr media
Another personal favorite, she’s a 41 years old (as of 2020) Egyptian-American actress. Even though she made her start in Arabic films, she has already starred in a number of American shows like the NBC’s show Crossbones and ABC’s series Quantico. Even though she speaks fluent English, she does have a bit of an accent, but I actually like her accent and it doesn’t make it hard to understand her at all. Even though she looks young for her age, I do think she’s pushing it a little bit, so if she’s gonna play Talia then it needs to be sometime soon.
3- Hiba Tawaji:
Tumblr media
This is the most Talia-looking in my opinion, she’s a 32 years old (as of 2020) multi-lingual Lebanese singer and actress, her acting experience have been mostly on broadway rather than films, including playing Esmeralda in a French adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (where she had to sing and act in French for the entirety of the show) and watching her interviews, her English is just as good. She’s also an unbelievably good vocalist, so she could also sing on the soundtrack of the movie/show she’s gonna be in. My only concern is that I don’t know how a broadway actress would transition to films/shows, but aside from that she gets a thumb up from me.
4- Marie-Lou Nahhas:
Tumblr media
She’s a 31 years old (as of 2020) Lebanese-American actress, I first discovered her on the Netflix show Orange Is The New Black and her acting was good enough, also her Egyptian accent on the show was really realistic to what an actual Egyptian Arabic would sound like even though she’s Lebanese-American and probably speaks in either Lebanese-Arabic or just English, so I guess she’s just that good at doing accents. I did try to find some interviews with her, but I couldn’t find anything, aside from OITNB and a couple other films/shows she surpassingly didn’t do much acting.
5- Ahed Kamal:
Tumblr media
She’s a 39 years old (as of 2020) Saudi Arabian actress who stared in a number of American and British TV shows that got good reviews, including a series on Netflix and BBC called Collateral, she also speaks perfect English as far as I know (I can’t even tell if it’s her first language or not) to be completely honest this is the best picture I could find of her, otherwise her looks don’t really resemble how I personally imagine Talia to look like, but aside for that she checks the mark on everything else.
6- Sofia Boutella:
Tumblr media
This one is like the opposite of number 3, her looks don’t scream Talia to me at all. She’s a 37 years old (as of 2020) Algerian-French actress who stared in the American blockbuster film The Mummy (2017) and she also played supporting roles in other big films like Star Trek (2016) and Atomic Blonde (2017), she probably has the most impressive resumé on this list and the fact that she does her own action scenes is a huge plus. I really don’t want to sound mean when I say this, but I just can’t get over how she looks, I mean she’s beautiful, but I really can’t see Talia when I look at her (and this is the best picture I could find of her), which is such a shame because everything else about her is perfect for this role.

001 for the subjects of your otp tags ‘gorgeous laurel’ and ‘more time with you’
thank you ca i love you!! my two faves actually
001 | Laurel Lance x Felicity Smoak - otp: gorgeous laurel
when I started shipping it if I did: i shipped it before i started watching the show, it was one of those gifsets that crossed my dash and i was like ‘hmm interesting okay’ and then i watched it and i literally got to the scene that my tag is from and i was like ‘uh oh i ship it harder’ because literally felicity’s first words to laurel are: “you’re laurel, that laurel, gorgeous laurel”
my thoughts: they deserve better than whatever dude they ended up with (especially since their common boyfriend is oliver fucking queen) and i always felt they had way more chemistry and would have been way more interesting together
What makes me happy about them: after felicity got over her ‘all women are my competition’ bullshit the amount of support and belief she had in laurel was amazing. laurel pulled herself out of a very dark place and after her sister died she could have fallen back to substance abuse but instead she channeled that into fighting bad guys but no one believed in her, aside from felicity
What makes me sad about them: they never really got a lot of chances to interact. like the scenes they had were great but a lot of the time it was them talking about oliver or competing over oliver and only towards the end of laurel’s life was when they finally got to talk like friends
things done in fanfic that annoys me: i don’t like when oliver is to present because a lot of times he’s written as a jealous asshole which is accurate for tv and i read fic to change that
things I look for in fanfic: i like supportive protective girlfriends. i also love when fics address felicity’s disability, you know when she was paralyzed for three episodes after being shot in the spine? and then it magically got better? idk i just like fics that don’t make that time disappear and have supportive laurel there helping her girlfriend
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: literally anyone other than oliver motherfucking queen
My happily ever after for them: obviously together, laurel is alive and oliver died on that mountain the day he was supposed to so now laurel and felicity are in charge of team arrow and continue on his legacy of protecting star city. basically what the show was except oliver died in whatever season he faced ras al ghul and laurel took over
who is the big spoon/little spoon: laurel is the big spoon, she’s the black canary, she does the protecting, though on hard days or days laurel gets hurt felicity takes over the big spool role
what is their favorite non-sexual activity: watching nerdy tv shows, you look me in the eye and tell me felicity hasn’t made laurel watch all of her favorite sci fi shows
001 | Thirteenth Doctor x Yasmin Khan - otp: more time with you
when I started shipping it if I did: god almost right from the beginning? i loved their meeting so much ‘i’m going to call you yaz because we’re friends’ but i think the spider episode is what really did it because of the whole scene with yaz’s mom asking if her and the doctor were together and the doctor genuinely not knowing the answer and looking to yaz to answer
my thoughts: i never really shipped the doctor with any companions, idk i just never saw it. martha deserved better, donna was a bff, the ponds had each other, rose was meeh not my fave character, clara was far too good for any of the doctors (but maybe it’s just because i’m gay as hell but i could get behind clara/13) and i don’t like river song period. but the chemistry yaz and the doctor has is amazing and hilarious and works so well because they’re both so curious and fit together so well and always have each other’s backs
What makes me happy about them: they fit so perfectly! they’re always ready to jump into adventure first head on while the boys are kind of tallying what could go wrong. yaz is fucking smart as hell and her and the doctor are equal in a lot of ways intellectually, like if the doctor has an idea yaz is literally saying the same thing not two seconds later. i also love that the doctor hasn’t said no to yaz (or any of the companions) but the number one rule of time travel with the doctor is don’t cross your time line and what did they do when yaz asked? went back in time to meet her nan when she was younger. like the doc throws all the rules out the window with yaz and i love it
What makes me sad about them: it’s the doctor and a companion. they’re not going to have a happy ending so i’m preparing myself for the sads
things done in fanfic that annoys me: anything that makes the doctor annoyingly childlike because yes she’s young and curious but there’s a difference between childlike awe and fascination and straight up stupidity and ‘i don’t know how to put on socks yaz lol’
things I look for in fanfic: i’m a sucker for protective fics. i love when the doctor can go from ‘wow yaz look at the wild universe’ to ‘you touch one hair on yasmin khan’s head and i will end you’ which is basically what the show is anymore and i love it
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: i mean the doctor and river i guess (though really not a fan of river) and yaz with a nice girl that supports her like the doctor does. just not ryan, please, i love ryan so so much but him and yaz are way more sibling like than couple like
My happily ever after for them: it’s dr who there is no happy ending for them. but i would love for them to travel together as long as possible with them admitting their feelings for each other and make the most of it while they can
who is the big spoon/little spoon: no spoons, just a big tangle of limbs. although since the doctor doesn’t sleep the same schedule as yaz they sometimes start off as doc is the big spoon but they always end up in a tangle of limbs
what is their favorite non-sexual activity: traveling space and time of course. also exploring the tardis because i feel like yaz loves the tardis a lot and she still stays at home but she knows the doctor is literally right down the block with that blue box ready to leave whenever yaz is ready

DC’s Nuclear Winter Special (Comic Book Review)
Tumblr media
There are plenty of reasons to not feel like getting into the holiday spirit, many of them valid and more apparent in the world at large this year in particular. So in the spirit of a time where it can feel like the world is ending, I’m going to recommend DC Comics’ 80-page holiday anthology special for this year, the Nuclear Winter Special. Featuring ten different stories focusing on some of the DC Universe’s greatest heroes from across time dealing with struggles in varied post-apocalyptic environments and connected to the holiday season in some way.
The ten stories and creators are the following:
Rip Hunter (writer: Mark Russell, art: Mike Norton, colors: Hi-Fi, letters: Daron Bennett)
Batman 666 (writers: Collin Kelly & Jackson Lanzing, pencils: Giuseppe Camuncoli, inks: Cam Smith, colors: Romulo Fajardo Jr., letters: Clayton Cowles)
Superman One Million (writer: Steve Orlando, pencils: Brad Walker, inks: Drew Hennesy, colors: Nathan Fairbairn, letters: Clayton Cowles)
The Flash (writer: Jeff Loveness, art: Christian Duce, colors: Luis Guerrero, letters: Tom Napolitano)
Supergirl (writer: Tom Taylor, breakdowns: Tom Derenick, art/colors: Yasmine Putri, letters: Deron Bennett)
Aquaman (writer: Mairghread Scot, art: Dexter Soy, colors: Veronica Gandini, letters: Steve Wands)
Firestorm (writer: Paul Dini, art: Jerry Ordway, colors: Dave McCaig, letters: Dave Sharpe)
Kamandi (writer/pencils: Phil Hester, inks: Ande Parks, colors: Trish Mulvihill, letters: Steve Wands)
Catwoman (writer: Cecil Castelucci, art: Amancay Nahuelpan, colors: Brian Buccellato, letters: Josh Reed)
Green Arrow (writer: Dave Wielgosz, art: Scott Kolins, colors: John Kalisz, letters: Alex Antone)
[Full Review Under the Cut]
I’ll mostly be going out of order for how I discuss the stories in this anthology special. However, the first two in the book are worth grouping together for discussion, the Batman 666 and Superman One Million stories. Both expansions on characters from alternate futures presented during Grant Morrison’s runs on Batman and JLA, respectively.
The story of Damian Wayne as the future Batman wandering the frozen wasteland while pondering if his dedication to his father’s ideals still means anything in the remains of the world, when he’s one of the people who ruined it. Multiple stories in this special play on the idea that time stopped really meaning anything in the post-apocalyptic landscapes the characters are left in, so they’re made to focus more on the essence of what the holidays represent. Kelly, Lanzing, Camuncoli and Smith bring in the idea of family togetherness by introducing Damian’s grandfather, Ra’s Al Ghul, into the story with the way the fight between the Bat and the Demon resolves coming down to the end of the world helping Damian put where his values are in perspective.
Tumblr media
Superman One Million’s story focuses on togetherness as well, but from another perspective and adding in the idea of the importance of memory. While Kal Kent, the Superman of the 853rd century, is highlighted in the table of contents for this issue, his segment of this issue absolutely belongs more to J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter. If this issue indicates Orlando’s approach to writing J’onn, then his upcoming miniseries focusing on the character is going to be something special. How canon anything in this special is meant to be taken loosely at best, but I like what this short story adds to J’onn’s character history when Kal Kent goes back in time to stop a time travelling villain from destroying the Superman Dynasty before it starts. The sequence where Kal gives J’onn back the memories of their past encounter the were removed for the sake of preventing paradoxes among the most heartwarming moments in a book full of them.
Tumblr media
On the topic of stories that add interesting new details to the featured character’s background, the Kamandi story by Phil Hester does this by way of tribute to the character’s creator, Jack Kirby. It takes the already heightened world that Kamandi inhabits and places this adventure within a framework that calls back to the stories of both Hanukkah and the Nativity. The Hanukkah elements are mostly in play as something Kamandi recalls from his time growing up in a bunker with his grandfather telling him stories. As far as I know, this is the first story in the character’s history to feature the idea that Kamandi is of Jewish decent. In addition to that neat detail, there are ways that this story feels more complete than a couple of the others within this issue as it manages to set up all its necessary elements quickly and executes paying them off in a satisfactory manner within the limited page count.
Tumblr media
Another story that makes effective use of its short page count is the Firestorm story, “Last Christmas.” The brief tale of Ronnie Raymond and Professor Stein having a final confrontation with the android Nuclear Family as they face their last Christmas ends up weirdly poignant and heartwarming. Dini and Ordway work together to balance the tragedy of the supervillain family with them still being a genuine threat. That tragedy also reflects on the kindness of Ronnie and Stein as they figure out how to save the day while letting the Nuclear Family’s final Christmas be a merry one in the end.
Tumblr media
Two more stories that contain some interesting parallel structures are the Catwoman and Supergirl stories. Each one puts the focus heroine in a parental role and shows how that keeps them inspired to action, even in the face of a world that’s falling apart. Catwoman’s story starts with Selina in a position where she mainly seems to be using her role as guardian to the daughter of her longtime friend, Holly Robinson, as a reason to remain self-interested in the dystopian Gotham. In a time when people are forced to stretch whatever resources they manage to get their hands on for as long as possible, Selina debates her charge about whether they should try to help others when their own supplies keep running low. Eventually, Selina gives into her better nature and it inspired to play the role of Santa Claus by way of Robin Hood.
Tumblr media
Writer Tom Taylor went to Twitter to ask people not to read the table of contents of this anthology, so they wouldn’t spoil his Supergirl story for themselves with its title. Since this easily makes the strongest contender for best story in the book, I’ll oblige by not giving away the ending either. The older Kara Zor El in this story looking after her adopted daughter in the “Not Distant Enough Future” journeying across the blighted Earth to find some place she can charge up her powers again is a compelling start to the story. The ending of the story builds up to Kara reflecting on a simple idea. In the face of the end, she has a choice to either perpetuate the cycles started by those who came before her or do something better. If you know anything about the Super-family, what her final choice ends up being won’t come as a surprise.
Tumblr media
While I don’t think any of the stories in this special are bad, there were three I felt fell short of the standards of most of this issue. The Flash and Aquaman stories, while playing on the same themes of hope in the face of a hopeless existence that permeate the rest of this issue, are the ones that stretch the holiday connection the most. Though both still serve as pretty good highlights for their focus heroes. The choice of focus hero was my main issue with the Green Arrow story. I’ve never particularly liked or disliked Oliver Queen as a character, but this story seems to require some type of investment in him to get something out of him being grumpy at a future Justice League’s Christmas party. Though the actual weakest part of the book is the framing device with Rip Hunter, which doesn’t seem to serve much purpose related to the other stories beyond being a framing device.
DC’s Nuclear Winter Special showcases the present creators pulling some great material for the featured heroes within the setup of the titular motif. There are certainly people reading this who will get more out of the stories I was dismissive towards and the average quality of the ones I’ve highlighted is strong enough to give this 80-page special a strong recommendation as a way to get into the holiday spirit with some exemplary superhero storytelling.

As part of the July 2019 AO3 Ship Stats, here are the Top 100 F/F pairings with the most total works on Archive Of Our Own.
Of the 200 names on this list, there are 53 women of colour and 27 women of ambiguous race, compared with 42 and 35 in the 2017 list. For comparison, the overall top 100 list includes 46 people of colour and 8 who are racially ambiguous.
Because of the way I produced this data, it is possible some F/F ships are missing, particularly those in fandoms dominated by other categories of ship. For more information, see the project FAQs. This project also includes an All-Time Top 100 list and 2017-2019 Top 100, and can be found cross-posted on AO3.
Edit: Fixed race classification for Éponine Thénardier.
