Age of Majority In TW Pt2

So I made a post at one point looking at whether or not there was a possibility in that in Chapter 3 some if not most or all of Azul’s contracts were not actually legally binding.

Anyways, essentially the conclusion of the initial and then some further discussion came with two results. The first was using the intended audience of the game as a baseline for the age of majority, a technique I learned from my highschool English teacher. With Japan from what I was able to find was their age of majority is 20 making no student besides Leona of legal age to sign a contract without a legal guardian present. The other was using the original story of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson, in which there’s a coming of age ceremony at 16, which would make all the students of legal age to sign a contract.

Book 6, however, has revealed a little information regarding this. This isn’t too much of a spoiler but just incase this is from somewhere between chapter 45-47, my guess is 46, if you’re not caught up or simply don’t want any spoilers at all, this is the warning.

Ok, so during a point in which Idia, Ortho and all our previous overblots need to pass the time, Ortho offers up videogames. After the introduction of the first game and couple people play it, Leona is being Leona, aka grumpy and wanting to nap, nd this is the translation that I saw which is from Otome Ayui on youtube.

Leona: Stop getting all excited over a game, you’re not a kid.

Ortho: Thinking about the average age of the students in Night Raven College, most of them are minors. In general, they are also classified as kids.

With the average of all the characters at Night Raven that we know (Excluding Leona, Ortho, Malleus and Lilia as outliers) the average age is 17. That’s the age we find all the second years, including Azul. That’s only looking at the first, second and third years, there are still fourth years at NRC. I think it’d be unlikely for Ortho to exclude 4th years when making a statistic of the average age of students at NRC meaning that the number Ortho is using is likely higher than 17 but I can’t say by how much. But whatever the number is the age of majority has to be higher than the average in order for a majority of students to be minors. Therefore, Azul at 17 must be a minor under Twisted Wonderland Law.

This would mean every contract he ever signed is completely null and void in the eyes of the law.

Is it expected to be covered by previous schools prior to NRC?

Or if they do have it, how extensive is it? How accurate is it?

How much do they cover each groups individual nuances and differences?

Since it’s an all boys school, how much of the female aspects are covered?

Who would teach it?

MC is casually having an existential crisis

Lilia is certainly going give them a minute to truly comprehend the information because it’s a lot to process and life shattering information, so he attempts to give them space

That is unless MC goes down the dark rabbit hole of their biological parents giving them up for some reason and what that means about them

Papa Lilia now has to come in and inform that fae do that in order to allow a life of comfort and coddling sometimes

Lilia does not mention the other possible reasons as to why far may trade their children with humans

He does also mention that it is not common for a fae to forget that they are even when traded

But it happens enough to not need to worry about it

Afterwards, it’s up to them if they’d like a bit of time alone or would like to be with other fae

Either way Lilia will gladly have them over at Diasomnia for tea and food, nothing with eggs though

He is going to answer any questions they have about fae culture and the diversity among them, also MC now would like to know what kind of fae they happen to be

All the while Sebek is also internally flipping out

I know it’s something very obvious, but I do think at least subtilely he smells like roses, most likely from a deodorant

Overall his scent is still very soft and mild

I think there is some honey and milk tea mingled into his scent as well

I’m really stuck between like that sugary smell that lingers on someone after they’ve been baking and like a nice gentle cologne

But those two don’t really mingle nicely, so...

When he knows he’s going to be baking he doesn’t wear cologne

And when he knows he isn’t he wears it

The cologne I think is something in the sagey or woody kind of scents

I honestly don’t think he genuinely bathes much

So he smells like general musk

Except when he goes home, then he’s wearing a cologne that Cheka picked out

I think he uses an unscented deodorant

But somehow he manages to smell like dry dirt

Like when you’re outside on a dry summer day running around with friends and your kicking up dust and dirt

Fresh grass

I have no idea why or an explanation

But generally I think his scent is like really soft

Like you’d probably have to try to pick up on it

Definitely a cologne

Maybe Cypress vibes

I like to think it’s the on land version of his step father’s cologne

It’s not as light as Trey’s but it’s not particularly pungent either

There’s a saltiness that he cannot get rid of

And just for fun, the scent of freshly inked paper lingers about him

Dirt.

Like freshly watered or just rained dirt

He smells like moist dirt and I mean it as a compliment

He’s the only one that I think doesn’t wear cologne in this dorm

Originally I thought his scent would be really random, he’d just do what he felt like but

Thinking about some of the stuff from the wish event I think not

I think he has a custom cologne, something very complex

But I think one of the main notes is really bitter dark chocolate

And maybe lemon?

I associate rose water with sweets and often more expensive

It’s vibrant which I think really fits him

He frequently needs affection and reaffirmation, because as much as he’s a cool calculating businessman he’s also an insecure octopus who was frequently bullied

It will take a while for him to be open about his neediness to his s/o but once he can be open, he’s still not super clingy in public

Howst fluffing ever, in private late at night... good luck getting away

He’s just needs to be held and comforted, bullying took such a toll on his mental state that there will almost always be something in the back of his head doubting

And when that voice gets loud his s/o’s affection is just so necessary

Oh by the way, people definitely did that horrible “prank” of confessing to him just to mock him, it still hurts

Jade Leech is the reason this request took a hot minute

He is needy in the most round about ways possible

When he’s needy he just stays around his s/o a lot, there’s just this subtlety to it, but like Azul, he feels the need to remain professional in public

But even in private it’s not obvious what’s happening until reading him becomes kind of natural

In private, he just won’t let go

At all

Just entirely wrapped around his s/o, doesn’t say anything about it just wants affection  from his s/o

I’ll be honest, my original analysis was simply based on a way of looking at stories my old English teacher taught me, which is to look at it with the perspective of the intended audience, (hence my looking into modern Japanese law) but,

What you’ve said is all actually a fair point, and in addition, since the episodes often follow along the actual plot of the movie it’s based around it makes a lot of sense should the age of majority be 16.

This is an argument you hear a lot with Ursula’s contract with Ariel: Ariel is only 16, a minor, therefore she is unable to sign a contract. And this is an argument that I personally dislike because it’s looking at our laws and not the laws that we can extrapolate from evidence of the story.

In the original Hans Christian Anderson’s Little Mermaid, the seeming age of majority for mermaids is actually 16.

In the story all of the sisters on their 16th birthday are permitted to go up to the surface, look around, and then before the end of the day come back down. It certainly seems to be depicted as a sort of coming of age ceremony.

Since the episode follows along the movie, I actually kind of agree that it’s rather plausible that they are legal adults.

I think MC/Yuu could have beaten Azul without going into a contract themselves

I’m basing this assessment on from my understanding of Japanese law. The reason I’m applying Japanese law to this situation as that’sthe law for the main intended audience for Twisted Wonderland, and I wanted a basis of law to look at that would be reasonable to implement in Twisted Wonderland.

So I know a lot of students who had to take standardized testing (in the US at the very least) are incredibly aware of the fact that legally a minor cannot sign and be held accountable for a contract, because we all joke about it every time those tests come.

So I was thinking about Azul’s contracts since he does state that it’s legal/an official document (episode 3 chapter 5), and so I wondered if this kind of law would apply on the island, since that would be the jurisdiction that they signed the contract in.

So if we go off of the idea that Japanese law applies to the island then the first thing to look at is what constitutes a minor and whether or not in Japan there is law saying that they can or cannot sign a contract and be held to it. (In general a minor usually can’t take juristic acts (common example of this is signing contracts) on their own but just to be certain we’re looking into what the law states anyways)

According to what I was able to find a minor in Japan is under 20 years of age and unmarried (apparently they plan to bring it down to 18 in 2022) meaning everyone besides the staff and Leona who was held back is a minor (reminder age of consent is not the same thing as age of majority although they often coincide)

Anyways so this means we can safely assume that all of the anemone students are minors.

So what does this mean for these contracts?

The contracts can be rescinded after the fact since at least one party was a minor (technically both in this case) when the contract was signed without their statutory agent’s permission/presence.

The only anemone I’m not sure this would work for is Grim, by not being human he likely wouldn’t fall under the same laws as the rest of the students do. I also am uncertain if MC/Yuu should they have gone into a contract would be able to use this argument either, because they technically have no statutory agent, you could argue that they’re the ward of the school but I think that would require legal documentation that I’m just pretty certain Crowley wouldn’t have done.

can I request something about NRC staffs dropping by here and there to check on mc's well being?

NRC Staff being dads? Absolutely!

Any day that MC isn’t in class, they try to find them and/or drop by to Ramshackle to make sure that they’re fine

But that doesn’t mean it’s the only time they drop by

Crewel makes sure they haven’t ingested or come into to contact with any they shouldn’t but also gives them basic medicines and it’s clearly labeled so they know what each medicine treats (especially if you go off a language barrier au)

Crewel also comes over and checks that they’re taking care of themselves, especially if he knows they’ve recently been dealing with overblots/Crowley’s nonsense

Trein is like a grandpa, he comes over on occasion under the pretense of letting Lucius run through Ramshackle to chase mice

He also brings over any leftover food he’s made for himself, and then often tells them a little bit about the history of the dish because it’s sometimes interesting

He has nagged Crowley to make the dorm more livable

Vargas pops in often to make sure that MC is still proud to be a non magic student, he knows watching other people do really cool things that you just can’t can take a toll especially when it seems like everyone but you can do it

He also likes to make sure that MC is safe should they somehow be on their own, he worries that other people will assume that MC’s magiclessness equals weakness and uselessness, because that’s what these students do

Crowley checks in under the pretense of checking in on Grim to make sure he hasn’t caused trouble, but really he’s just super fond of MC and wants to know that they’re doing ok

He actually sends them to do all these things so one, he can look for MC’s way to go home, as much as he doesn’t want them to, and two, to keep them distracted from being homesick

Anything he finds that you’ve ever pointed out being similar to home, he slips it into Ramshackle at some point in order to remind you that home isn’t so far away

Sam comes by with “extra” stock that he knows can be useful to MC, weather it’s something he’s heard them mention in passing that they need or just something he thinks they could benefit from especially if they mention they can’t afford cause budget/allowance from Crowley

Definitely pops in after he hears about an overblot, always with something to help them kind of chill and destress because overblots are scary especially when your sometimes friends with them

One of my favorite things that goes with the twins is that everyone kinda seems to find their height intimidating but to me, someone who is only narrowly taller than the robot child, it’s all the same, like a tall person is tall, wow just like everybody fluffing else in comparison to me

MC/Yuu: *Stares at Azul*

Imagine mc is a fae but didn't know about it, then malleus or Lilia tell them that they are and teach them about fae.

So in Europe there are stories of human children being taken and replaced with a fae child!

So MC was a particularly young fae child when this happened and so they themself didn’t realize and neither did their parents

MC aged a bit slower so they look young to be in high school like NRC

They dismiss anyone pointing out the pointy ears and some of their different instinctual behavior as simply ‘humans are different and weird sometimes’

Sebek is yelling at them at some point for who knows what and calls them human throughout

And Lillia comes through to mainly wrangle Sebek, but also to get another observation of MC

Because Lillia knows, but is not 100% sure that MC knows

So Lillia goes through the process of reminding Sebek to, one, not to refer to people as ‘human’

And two, to not assume that everyone here beside Malleus and Lillia is not a fae and therefore automatically human

Lillia’s gesturing to MC holds plenty of the implication that they are a fae, and as Lillia keeps pointing out things about them that made them standout so much from human children made them fit right in with fae

Lillia now has a new child to raise

What if mc liked gargoyles just as much as malleus. And they became friends over that.

Super adorable, especially if they’re in the Gargoyle Research Club with him

Because it seems he’s the only one in that club actually, so he’s glad to have someone else there

And it’s clearly of their own volition because people tend to avoid him

So he has a new friend who’s not scared of him and shares a common interest it’s amazing

They definitely go around campus together late at night looking at all the gargoyles around school

They compare the designs of Twisted wonderland’s architecture to that of their world

And Malleus loves to hear it, this child of man babbling on freely and without fear about something they both very much love
