Review: The Luckiest

We're starting off with a fic that's very dear to me: The Luckiest, by harriet_vane.

I don't know how, but harriet (can I call you harriet?) packed so much into these 8k words.

It's a modern au, with Nix working a job he hates and being left by a wife he barely saw. She took the dog, as they say, and somehow or other, he ends up drunk on the lawn of his next door neighbor, petting his dog. The tall, redheaded neighbor looks down at him, bemused, and puts him to bed on his couch.

It's a delicious slow burn of friendship and pining, of the gentle intimacies of grocery shopping and home repair and keeping whiskey for your neighbor that sleeps on your couch most nights even though you don't drink. It's the sort of fic that makes you want to curl up on a comfy chair and makes your heart race (for General Audiences, there is a lot of chemistry here).

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? review: jump into the fire

@yeats-infection/fluorescentgrey’s jump into the fire is one of the first webgott fics i ever read, and it permanently restructured my neurological pathways. it’s absolutely one of those stories that cleaved my life into two discrete eras, a Before and an After. this is THE premier webgott modern au to me.

web is doing an american literature phd, lieb is a geology student and also a rock climbing enthusiast (most of which serves the modern setting but all of which feels 100% canon). at a party one night they share what is deemed, and aptly described as, The Best Kiss Ever.

the author expertly handles side characters, which is so much fun in a fandom like band of brothers where there is such a multitude of characters (the baberoe b-plot, and the exploration of the babe/lieb friendship, are glorious. i will never, as long as i live, recover from the I lieb you text exchange). the writing is so rich and vivid that i wish i could make a home inside of it, par for the course in a fluorescentgrey fic. sensory detail and crisp character analysis and economy of language all come together in some kind of holy trinity of storytelling. here’s an excerpt that gives you some idea and, i hope, kicks your interest up to 100; the rest is simply unmissable.

“Lieb,” Webster said. His own voice echoing in the cavern of his skull. Echoing basically out of another place and time such that at first he did not quite realize it was himself that had said it. Liebgott cracked an eyelid. In the purplish light the redness in the white of his eye seemed a deep blue. He pressed his tongue against his canine tooth, as though he were going to let the characteristic smirk stretch across his face but had thought better of it at the last minute. It was immediately clear that he understood something that Webster realized later he had been trying to say, even if he himself wasn’t exactly sure what it was. The entire world sharpened like a pencil into this narrow point. The space between them which was shrinking. There was a kernel — an atom — of raw, pure truth at the center of this space and they each reached for it, towards each other. And the sun sank its last drop of light into the molten core of the world. Thence the best kiss ever.

I've been trying to think of an AU for the @ficwip August AU challenge, where the fic has to be under 5k words. That is my struggle. This is my third attempt, lmao. The general idea is canon divergent, where James and friends visit Jamie after Wembley, and James breaks Jamie's hand (double-dipping with my hand stomp square for @badthingshappenbingo). He takes himself to A&E.

Roy, meanwhile, can't sleep, so he shows up at A&E under the guise of bringing food to his sister. Jamie tries to play off he hurt his hand punching his Dad, but Roy knows his hand didn't look like that when he dropped Jamie off. Another clip under the cut:

Jamie made eye contact with Roy, and he awkwardly signed the piece of paper the kid’s mom offered to him with his left hand. Roy rushed to him like he was heading for an opposing player on the pitch: head down, determined. Furious.   “Jamie, what the fuck are you doing here?”  “Oh. Um–thought I should get this checked out,” Jamie nodded at his ice-pack-covered hand. “I fucked it up when I–” He trailed off, but Roy didn’t need him to finish as he sat beside him.  “Why the fuck didn’t you say anything?
