Bell belongs to @deadzonedenizen
Yangwu Jin belongs to @littlethingsrae
Learn more about them below the cut!
Bell:
Dead men tell no tales, unless your name is Bellamy, apparently. Perhaps a century has already passed since the MS Pearl of the Orient sank, sparking different mysteries from the following events that seem to be related. Little do people know that the otherwise overlooked hero in blue was one of the passengers on that cruise ship that drowned, except Bell washed up a century later. Once a delinquent with a knack for hacking, Bell used to be involved in a lot of not-so legal stuff after getting mixed up with the wrong people. Ironic that he's now a back-up hero by day, with night patrol duties at— well…night.
It wasn't like he wanted to be a hero, don't get him wrong. He defends this gang of misfits that adopted him into the group from a raging bull king one time, and the media suddenly grouped him together with MK and Mei. Public reception is better if they were depicted as a trio apparently. So villains would now have this tendency to go for him as well, although thankfully not as much compared to what the yellow and green M&Ms have to deal with.
Maybe it helps that Bell is a smooth talker and a good escape artist, with the nonchalant persona he's usually known for. Years of moving under the police’s radar has taught him all the he needed to know. So don't be fooled by the enchanted flutes he uses as his weapons, and the fact that he's less experienced at fighting compared to MK and Mei. His real weapons are his cunning and charisma. He isn't above doing a bit of dirty work such as being a data broker in exchange for some ‘favors’, or holding said data above people's heads as blackmail. Manipulation extends outside of hacking as well, carefully placing events like dominos, waiting for the time to let them fall piece by piece.
But he’s not proud of this lifestyle, and would've preferred if the chess playing was limited to actual chess. Escaping said lifestyle was the reason he was on that ship in the first place, so he could start anew in a different country, under a different identity, under a different name. But he will have to keep relying on this lifestyle, if he wants to have a fighting chance against the demon-in-girl’s clothing behind the white pawns. In a game of water against ice, blue against blue, Bell already made his choice. Picking up the black pawns and playing the bone demon's game may seem daunting…
But it's a risk he's willing to take. - .... . ....... - --- -.-- ... ....... - . .-.. .-.. ....... .- ....... ... - --- .-. -.--
Yangwu Jin:
Yangwu Jin is the Granddaughter of Sanzuwu, the last Celestial Sun Crow - Jin was given life by Bìxiá Yuanjun (the Goddess of Dawn and Destiny) to one day take over the mantel and ultimately ease the stress on the Goddess' oldest friend.
Jin is enthusiastic and kind-hearted, always regarding others with the grace and patience that comes with being a Celestial. She’s fascinated by those outside of the Celestial sphere and mortal life in general, once you get to know her some of the ‘poise and restrictions’ seem to vanish - she’s naturally curious, talkative and very caring for those she holds dear.

2023 BEST READS
A few days late but hey, better late than never! This is a non-comprehensive list of my favorite fics that I’ve read in 2023! Criteria for a fic to be included on this list are:
I read the fic in 2023
I reread the fic at least once
I can rate 5/5 stars without hesitation
The fics are organized by fandom but otherwise are in no particular order.
BATMAN
New Wave by yellow_caballero Batman (gen), 103k, Reverse Robins, Stephanie Brown is Robin Some lunatic in a bat costume is running around Gotham clowning on fools, but local delinquent Stephanie Brown has way bigger problems. When her father and friends start joining mob wars Steph knows she has to do something about it before Gotham collapses. If that means joining up with rich dudes playing dress up, pasty nerds with hacking and photography habits, and throwing on a costume herself, then that’s just what she’ll have to do. Even if Batman works alone. She’s convincing. In which Stephanie Brown rocks the radical nineties and becomes the first Robin, ruining Batman’s life and giving Tim Drake a hobby.
birdsong by ScarlettSwordMoon Nightwing (gen), 22k, Dick Grayson-Centric After getting a face full of Scarecrow’s newest toxin, Dick isn’t haunted by his typical nightmares. No. This one has little green pixie boots. AKA Batman: Ego but make it Robin. Nightwing 60th Anniversary Bingo: Drugs & Toxins
Keep Your Head, Your Backbone, and Your Heart by MrMich Batman (gen) 54k, Dimension Travel, Duke Thomas-centric The last thing that Duke expected on what was supposed to be just a regular patrol was being suddenly thrown five years into the past, coming face to face with a darker, more violent Batman than the one he knew, a broken family, and a Tim who was a foot shorter than Duke, and not even Robin yet.
Loading and Aspect Ratio by JUBE514 Batman (Superbat), 45k, Wings AU A world where nobody has wings, but people think they do, and that changes everything.
Our Bodies & Other Fine Machines by SilverSkiesAtMidnight Batman (gen), 13k, Starvation He has never argued with a punishment, not since he was a toddler, if then. Surely she’ll listen, surely she’ll see this is too harsh, that he wouldn’t be disrespecting her like this if he was simply sulking over not getting his way. He needs that food, needs to be able to eat enough if he wants to be Robin. He’s been hungry before, but back then, it never mattered if he was a little weak or dizzy. It never risked his life or the life of his partner when he was a kid. She turns, sighing softly and pursing her lips. She reaches out to pat his cheek, and for a moment his heart soars hopefully, and he barely restrains himself from leaning into the rare bit of contact and soaking up his mother’s touch. “Oh, Timothy,” she tuts. “This is for the best. And honestly, I think it’s wise for you to cut down a bit on the snacks. I’d hate to have to listen to anyone tittering at the next gala that you’re getting chubby.” And without another backwards glance, she turns and heads upstairs, leaving Tim alone and frozen at the bottom of the steps.
You, Me, and the Humanity in Between by JUBE514 Batman (gen), 65k, Non-Human Robins Bruce is trying his best to protect the city that he loves. He doesn't know how exactly his Robins came to be- they're not fully human, not even at all. All he knows is that he wants to keep them safe.
Little Red by destiny919 Batman: Under the Red Hood (gen), 39k, Series, Jason is Tim’s Parent AU where Tim is younger and has been illegally adopted by his hero, the Red Hood.
A Different Game by Hinn_Raven Batman (multi), 62k, Red Hood!Stephanie Brown, Role Reversal Stephanie Brown died with a mouth full of blood and her eyes wide open, staring at the locked door, hoping still for a miracle, for a rescue. She died in a hidden place, still hanging from the ceiling by her wrists, bleeding out from a wound in her stomach, and no one was with her when her heart gave its last beat. AU where Stephanie Brown dies as Robin and becomes the Red Hood.
bad news, this place is magic as fuck by mikkal Batman (gen), 28k, All-Caste Jason Todd, Magic Jason Jason's on the trail of a killer who's targeting kids in Crime Alley for an unknown magical ritual. Between that and his family who insists on butting in, he's got his work cut out for him. But, as they say, nothing is as it seems.
Wings over Gotham by icarus_chained Batman, DC (gen), 190k, No Man’s Land, Independent Gotham An AU where an altered version of No Man’s Land happened while Bruce was in his late teens/early twenties, and Batman was born in the hellish crucible of a trapped city that was left for dead and then violently retaken. Gotham may pretend to run by mainlander rules for the sake of those who would have died otherwise, but under the surface, Bruce, Jim, Leslie, Ivy and Oswald and their pack keep their own council, and look with jaundiced eyes on the mainland.
A Meditation on Railroading by eggmacguffin Batman (gen), 24k, Hurt/Comfort When he ends up ditched in Atlanta after a fight with his dad, Tim decides to do the only sensible thing: Tell no one and make the 800 mile journey back to Gotham on his own. Because the "call Batman when you're in trouble" rule only applies when he's Robin, right?
THE BATMAN (2022)
I’m a Good Pretender by shipNslash The Batman (2022) (gen), 40k, Dick Grayson-Centric Dick’s mother raised her son to be a star. Dick’s father raised his son to be an athlete. Bruce's new ward is charming (manipulative), dedicated (obsessive), and way, way too smart for either of their own good.
In This or Any Other Universe by wildsofmarch The Batman (2022) (gen), 33k, Dimension Travel There was a new vigilante in his city: a man who smiled too much and talked too loud and knew his way around a fight a little too well. Bruce wasn't bothered by his antics. Except the man also seemed to know a little too much about him. Who was this Nightwing, anyway? OR: Dick Grayson (DCU) accidentally lands himself in Battinson’s Gotham.
DC LEGENDS OF TOMORRW
Countless Roads by nirejseki Arrowverse, DC Legends of Tomorrow (Mick Rory/Leonard Snart), 231k, Medium Leonard Snart, AU-Ghosts Due to a family curse (which some call a gift), Leonard Snart has more life than he knows what to do with – and that gives him the ability to see, speak to, and even share with the various ghosts that are always surrounding him. Sure, said curse also means he’s going to die sooner rather than later, just like his mother, but in the meantime Len has no intention of letting superheroes, time travelers, a surprisingly charming pyromaniac, and a lot of ghosts get in the way of him having a nice, successful career as a professional thief.
Straight On Till Morning by nirejeski Arrowverse, DC Legends of Tomorrow (Sara Lance/Mick Rory/Leonard Snart), 17k, Time Pirates Left alone in the Refuge, Mick and Sara decide they're going to be proactive about their fate. They end up becoming time pirates. Because of course they do.
THE WITCHER
A Beginners Guide to Exploiting the Kaedweni Tax Code For Fun and Profit by Heronfem The Witcher (Aiden/Lambert), 190k, WIP, AU-Modern Setting, AU-College/University Aiden Kett and Lambert Wilkson accidentally get married, and this is honestly probably the least of their problems.
By the Broken Lock That Freed Me by inexplicifics The Witcher, (muti), 46k, AU-Daemons, Accidental Warlord Series Aiden takes a contract on the Duke of Velen. He's not expecting the most interesting part of the whole affair to be meeting the duke's betrothed. His daemon thinks they should keep her. Aiden's not sure how that will work, given that he's already got a Wolf and doesn't know how Lambert and his daemon might feel about adding someone else to their little pack, but it's awfully tempting. And Cats aren't very good at resisting temptation.
Intent by tnico The Witcher (Aiden/Lambert), 18k, Non-Traditional A/B/O, 5+1 "You think I don't know what you're after?" Lambert accuses. "Well, I'd certainly hope you do, by this point in the evening," Aiden (so he says) agrees in a convincingly genial tone. It'd probably be enough to fool someone else on the matter of genuine interest.
SPIDERVERSE
gonna crack a rib (when i get home) by eneliii Spiderverse (gen), 40k, Cannon Divergence Miles Morales, recently landed in Earth 42, has had enough of everyone’s shit and he’s going to save his dad or so help him he’ll lose his mind. Miles Morales 42, just wants to know what the /hell/ is up with his doppelgänger.
MCU
The Hero's Journey; or: What Jasper Sitwell Did Last Summer by pagination MCU, Welcome to Night Vale (multi), 23k, Crossover The thing is, when an agent reaches clearance level five, it’s because they’re valuable, capable of something an exponentially diminishing few can offer in the ranks of SHIELD. Clint Barton, his personal issues notwithstanding, is unstoppable behind a scope. Jim Woo is an analyst and extractor par excellence. Melinda May has infiltrated half the presidential offices of Asia, and Phil Coulson has an instinct for the unusual that could be the basis of an entire TV show. Jasper’s less certain what he brings to the party.
If I Knew You Were Coming I'd've Baked a Cake by OddityBoddity MCU, Hawkeye (gen), 27k, Baking They’re the broken ones. That’s what Clint figures the rest think about him and Barnes. Clint with his eardrums trashed, Barnes with a regiment’s worth of trauma and a psychotic cybernetic arm, put in the same room and told to make nice while the others get to go on missions and do important things and save the world. Well they're not broken. So of course they got bored and tired of being sidelined and decided to entertain themselves. And of course they ended up wanted, running through the streets of Paris with bananas down their pants and gendarmes in pursuit. Of course they did.

Thinking about young Charlie and young Bela meeting in juvie or some sort of delinquent youth rehabilitation programme that they chose instead of juvie. Maybe in the same foster home but I prefer people's actions to guide them to meeting people rather than happenstance. They're around the same age, this could work. 16 year old "I'm going to hack the pentagon but I can't lie in person to save my life" Charlie and 17 year old "I'm the most charming person in the room but I have no friends" Bela working together to...something. Right some sort of wrong against each of them. Maybe Charlie needs some paperwork she can't access without Bela's help to send money across for her mom's medical expenses (this would be 2001, hacking can only get you so far) and maybe Bela wants a forged american citizen ID.
2 girls who nobody cares about, with no contacts, no safety net and everything to lose choosing to help each other because no one else will. With an air of bittersweetness over the whole thing because we know that they lose contact.
(Until of course the epilogue where Jo brings her new femme fatale girlfriend to the Harvelle-Winchester Friends and Family Christmas and Charlie and Bela point at each other like 🤯🤩🥹)

a view from above. (edward's POV)
From Ch. 11- observing the Iceberg Lounge. Something short and sweet (see: kinda creepy) word count: 2271 | warnings/notes: ed is a lil creepy sometimes, there is also an implication that the reader has sent pictures to Jonathan but you can dismiss it as noncanon if you wish.
read on AO3 | stay to burn masterpost
He hacked into her phone only when he was tired of waiting for her to just randomly show up at his apartment. When it hadn’t happened the day after he’d dropped off the card at her apartment, he knew she was waiting for something. But he needed to know what exactly she was waiting for so he wasn’t wasting his own time. He had other things to do, after all. (Though he was finding that they were seeking increasingly less important in comparison to… her.)
Besides, he didn’t even really hack into her phone- just her text messages which were all stored in the Cloud anyway. And once he found what he wanted, he left. He didn’t snoop around, didn’t try to learn more about her through her conversations. He certainly didn’t look to see if she had sent any pictures to Dr. Crane. (And if he had found any pictures, he certainly didn’t save them.)
But he found the information he needed- she was going to go to the Iceberg Lounge with her friends on Saturday. He knew the date, the time, the theme (it was for the birthday of a friend, another college student named Bridgit that Edward vaguely recognized from some of the Instagram pictures he had looked at before.) And he had a gut feeling that he was the reason she had seemingly changed her mind about attending.
The night of her outing, he waited in his old apartment. Edward tried not to spend too much time there- it was abandoned, yes, but you never knew when the GCPD was going to come sniffing around to make sure there were no squatters or other delinquents making use of the empty space. Or worse, if the Batman was going to check on the place for any of his followers. Especially since they were all on high alert after his escape from Arkham (though it was slightly insulting that they’d think he’d return to the one place they had him definitively connected to). Really, he’d only popped in a few times to see what had been done with the place (gutted) or meet a follower. He never risked being there for more than fifteen minutes.
But he was risking it tonight.
Half an hour before the group she was a part of was going to arrive, he had almost everything ready. The burner phone he was giving her was placed in its box, though the last component of his gift wasn’t quite ready yet. Something had compelled him to put pictures with the box, to show her that he hadn’t forgotten about her or her promise to help him. (And also, partially, because he liked to imagine the look on her face when she realized that he was watching her).
So he waited at the window, shrouded in shadows, watching the street. The sun set, the street lamps flickered on. A slow crowd of people entered the club, and every time the door opened he feared that he had missed her arrival.
Then- there. Her car, beat up and probably long overdue for an oil change, was parking in a spot nearby. He watched, not blinking, as she maneuvered into the spot, resisting the urge to wince when it turned out she was… not very good at parallel parking.
Immediately from the back seat, two boys and a girl get out. Edward watches with narrowed eyes, trying to figure out who they are to her. Even though he isn’t too familiar with the social circles she runs in, he is certain that these people are not close to her. They couldn’t be, he couldn’t imagine her getting along with frat-boy jock types. He sincerely hoped she didn’t get along with them- she was much too important, much too special to bother with men whose only goal in life was to drink beer at parties and barely obtain their B.S. in Business.
Then from the passenger side emerged a slightly familiar woman, though it takes a moment for him to place where he’d seen her before. Then it hits him: Mitchell’s funeral. She had been the friend, the one who had left her name tag out in a place where he could easily see it. Which had, in turn, led to him finding her.
A few beats pass and for a moment, he’s genuinely afraid that she will drive away, that she wasn’t actually going to go into the club. But then-- the driver side door opens and- and-
And, oh, look at her. He was so used to seeing her in her wardrobe of carefully curated business casual that the sight of her in something else nearly knocked him off of his feet. But there she was- in a short dress, almost her entire leg exposed to the light of the streetlamps as she walked to catch up to her friend (Marie, that was her name).
He was staring.
He was well aware of it.
He wouldn’t be surprised if his mouth had gone slack.
But what else was he supposed to do? Besides, it wasn’t like she could see him staring. Edward was free to look her up and down and up again, taking in every inch of her body while she was none the wiser.
He watched as she walked towards the entrance to the club, out of the same window he had watched for the Batman many months ago.
Slowly, he raised his camera with shaking hands, waiting for the perfect moment. If he had a digital camera, he’d be free to take as many as he wanted. But right now he would only afford himself two photos- one, which he took and shoved into his pocket, and the other to give to her. To show her that he was present.
He watched as the second one developed, a dark photograph with only her face in the light, peeking over her shoulder. If he didn’t know better, he’d say she was looking for him.
And then, everything was set. The present, placed perfectly in the middle of the room. It was wrapped in newspaper, pretty badly, but he’d topped it off with a green ribbon. Just to make it look nice, so that she wouldn’t see it and immediately run. He placed the envelope with the pictures inside on top and left the room, looking back once to make sure it was as nice as he needed it to be.
Nodding once, he made his way to his spot for the night, climbing out of the window with practiced ease.
He sat, waiting on the rickety fire escape. It was a risk to stay here, knowing that all she had to do to find him was simply look outside the window.
But if that were to happen, then they could talk. But he trusted that she would be too preoccupied with his gift that she wouldn’t bother looking out at his fire escape. It was a risk, but one he was willing to take.
He couldn’t see much of the entryway to the Iceberg Lounge from his current spot so he left the window open a bit to hear if anyone entered the apartment. Plus he wasn’t going to be able to see her for the entire time, and hearing her was the next best option.
Even though he had spent the last week waiting for this night, waiting for her to come to him, the last hours of it were the worst. Every creak in the apartment building, every muffled noise, every shift of dust on the floor had him peeking over the windowsill to see if she had entered the building at last.
Finally, he heard the unmistakable creak of his door being pushed open and light footsteps on the wooden floor. There was no other possibility- she was here.
A bolt of nervous energy, or adrenaline, coursed through him and all he wanted to do was turn around and peek through the window, to see her in his old domain. But he controlled himself. He didn’t want to risk it all by looking into the apartment, not now that she was finally here. So instead he listened as she shuffled through the space, exploring the empty rooms slowly.
Edward knew when she’d reached the present because her movements stopped. He assumed she was looking down at the gift, probably debating if it was safe to open or not.
He pictured all of the things she might be thinking it was- a bomb, probably. Another riddle, sure. He wasn’t sure how likely it was that she would guess he’d brought her a phone- a direct line to him. There was no other use for the phone (for her, at least. He, of course, had also installed a tracking device into the phone. Just to make sure that she wasn’t going to skip town on him. That’s all.)
For a second he thought he’d imagined it but she had whispered his name, called out into the darkness for him. He couldn’t stop himself- he looked through the window. It was dark and he could barely make out her form, but there she was, looking around her before focusing her attention on the box at her feet. The Polaroids were in her hand and he realized he had zoned out for a minute and missed any audible reaction she’d had to the photos.
Slowly she lowered herself to the floor, though she was moving in an odd way and it took a moment for Edward to realize it was because she didn’t want her skirt to flip upwards. Which, while fair, was disappointing that she felt the need to hide herself even when no one was watching (well, as far as she knew).
Gingerly, she unwrapped the gift before staring down into the open box. He turned away from the window again, pulling his phone out. If everything went to plan, she’d- his thoughts were cut off as the phone began to ring.
Well, not really ring. Thank goodness he remembered to put the phone on silent.
With a surprisingly steady hand, he answered the call. It was silent and he waited for her to make the first move, to be the first one to say something.
“Edward?” Her voice was almost a whisper, like she was uncertain that he was on the other end.
“You found it. Good.” He kept his voice low, trying to prevent her from hearing him anywhere but the phone.
“Where are you?”
He held back a chuckle. If she only knew that he was only a few feet away… “You don’t need to worry about that.”
“I’m not worried, I’m just… curious.” He could imagine the incredulous look on her face, slightly defensive at the notion that she’d worry about him. “Can you see me right now?”
“Hm.” He hummed as he considered if he should tell the truth or not. He decided, for his own sake, to not. And technically, he wasn’t lying because he wasn’t looking in through the window at that moment. He couldn’t see her at that very second.“No.”
“But you could, earlier.”
“Yes.” Obviously, the picture of you in front of the Iceberg Lounge proved that.
“Right.” He hazarded a glance into the apartment. She was looking out one of the front windows, pulling a curtain to the side as she stared down at the Iceberg Lounge. “What do you want me to do with this phone?”
“Keep it on you.” He adjusted his pose, leaning in further to watch her. He prayed it was dark enough, that she wouldn’t look over at him. “I’ll call.”
“What are you going to have me do?”
What a question. Something he could give so many answers to, though he was certain she wouldn’t like any of them, criminal or otherwise.
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
He could practically taste her frustration in her held back groan, though a bit escaped her in a huff of breath.
“Please don’t draw this out any longer-” She was practically pleading with him. It was, admittedly, a nice sound. It was awful realizing that it would probably be the only way he would hear her like that- she would never beg him to do something she’d like, and he’d have to content himself with that truth.
“All in good time.” Before he could say anything else, he hung up, tucking the phone into his pocket. He watched her silhouette as it turned in his space. Then, she jumped, and dug around in her purse before pulling out her actual phone, the blue light illuminating her face. She pressed it against her ear, clearly talking to someone. As she talked, she shoved the polaroids and burner phone into her purse, and he felt a curl of satisfaction in his lower stomach knowing that she was doing exactly what he wanted her to.
Then, oddly, she grabbed the bow off the package and took it too before practically running out of the apartment. With a slam, the door shut behind her.
From where he was, he couldn’t see where she went next.
Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out the slightly bent picture he’d taken before. It was a bit blurry, but he could still make out her figure despite it. He’d made sure to wait until she was underneath one of the streetlamps to catch her body in the yellow glow, illuminating her. He resisted the urge to sigh, instead slipping it back into his pocket and making the journey off of the fire escape and back to the street.
