Hello!! Aww thanks 🥺🥺 unfortunately i can't think of many fics i've read with that premise right away? The closest that comes to mind is Robins and Other Flightless Birds by Ionaperidot, which has Bruce from a universe where he doesn't have any kids adopting his kids from the multiverse instead. I'm not sure if it quite fits "grew up together" but i remember it being a pretty sweet read!

Also it's not all the siblings (tho i think more get adopted in that series? I've only read this story from it) and it's Jason-centric for the most part but Precedent by Cdelphiki has kid Jason and smaller kid Damian in the same household and it's rly cute if that counts

For the sake of this post not being too long, I am going to rec only one fic or series from an author, but all of these authors are great writers so I recommend checking their other works as well. Hope you will enjoy this fics as much as I do!

1. Jason and Damian being bros

1.1 Bet on it by Lysical  

Even Damian could admit that his older siblings occasionally had their uses. __

"No," Jason replied, and hung up.

Short but adorable story of Jason helping out Damian to hide something from their father, just like big brothers out to do.

1.2 Cracked Foundation by Cdelphiki    

The last thing Damian expected to happen when he ran away from home was to spend a day crammed into a small space with Jason Todd.  His father's second son was a black sheep.  An outcast.  An angry, insanity driven criminal who enjoyed screwing with the batfamily in every way he could. At least, that's what Damian thought.  Maybe he was wrong about Todd.

Perfect hurt/comfort with a lot of family feels and Damian and Jason bodning. Bonus points: Jason actually apologizing for shooting him; exploration of Bruce’s relationships with them both too.

1.3   Good Grief by lysiabeth                

“I know who you are, you know. I got my degree at GCU.” The girl says, eyes boring into Jason’s chest as if the red bat were still plastered on it, and Jason’s back stiffens.

“Right.” Jason’s teeth click together as he closes his mouth. He’s eighteen-hundred miles out from Gotham, and of all the Goddamn vet centres he could have broken into it’s probably the only one around that knows anything about his city.

WIP with 8K words so far but worth early reading and bookmarking/subscribing. Case fic, plus Damian and Jason bonding as siblings through Talia? Leviathan also plays a part in this story? Hell yeah.

1.4 Jason and the Three Terrors by Cdelphiki                

One moment, Jason was peacefully sleeping, perfectly content with his life with the League of Assassins.  Okay, so maybe not content content, but he wasn't unhappy, either.  Then Talia woke him up at 2 am, threw three children at him, and told him to get them to America and far away from Ra's al Ghul.

What the fuck.

The last thing he wanted was to see Bruce. But with three brats relying on him and no Talia, there weren't many options for sanctuary. He just didn't expect the kids to grow on him so much in two short weeks.

A superb AU where Jason helps Damian escape League of the Assassin (against his wishes and with two unwanted additions to boot, which is half the pleausure). They aren’t brothers, stictly speaking, at the start of the fic, but become them as the story progresses.

It’s a WIP but it has 50K already and it will be so much more. I am excited with every update and I’m sure you’re gonna be, too.

2. Jason being a brother to Cassandra

2.1 Nests and Cages series by LanternWisp, Lysical starting with Needles or Pins  

Jason Todd's journey back to the Batfamily. Takes place in the Frankenstein's monster of a canon I've stitched together. Each plot is rather self-contained, but the fics do flow into one another

Jay and Cass are bio siblings, and Jason’s slow return to the fold. I love this series, and I think it’s one of the greatest take on Lady Shiva being Jason’s mother too.

2.2 Didymous  by   Hinn_Raven

Didymous: adjective: growing in pairs or twins.

Cassandra and Jason are born twins, raised by their father to be killers. Two heads are better than one.

It’s a great AU with Jay and Cass being biological siblings.

2.3 the patron saint of the lost causes series by evanescent

Pre-Flashpoint AU based on canon what-if Lady Shiva was not only Cassandra's biological mother, but Jason's, too. Mostly focuses on Cass and Jason's relationship, and how that fact changes the dynamics in Batfamily.

It is also a great series with Cass and Jay being biological siblings and I recommend reading every fic of this series.

2.4 Rebirth by Ionaperidot                

"The boy is clearly ill, and while she’s almost certain that he is, impossibly, Jason Todd, almost is not good enough. She can’t drop heartbreak on her beloved’s doorstep, and she can’t run the necessary tests when Damian is vulnerable to her father’s wrath. There’s no way around it. He’ll have to come home with her."

Unexpectedly in charge of a second son, Talia struggles to raise her children without unwanted attention from the Demon's Head.

An AU where Talia is the one who unites Cass and Jason. It also contains Damian, and he’s a little brother to them both.

3. Jason and Duke being bros

3.1 Bats are Dorks by   Reah22                

Duke hadn’t meant to literally trip and fall on to Jason. He really hadn’t. For the record, he blamed Steph. It was probably one of her old pranks that she forgot to take down. That, or she deliberately left it up for someone to trip over in the dark.

3.2 oh, where do i begin? by LazuliQuetzal

“No, no, nothing’s wrong,” Jason says. “We’re a-okay. Just peachy. Good times.”

“Oh,” Duke says, lamely, working himself out of crisis mode. There’s an awkward silence for a moment before he speaks up again. “Why did you call?”

“Right, right," Jason mumbles, which seemed a little out of character to Duke. His sort-of wayward brother was generally intimidating, even when he wasn't trying to be. "Uh, Dick said that you had a guinea pig when you were younger. How do you take care of a guinea pig?” _____

Absolutely adorable short story about Jason going to his little brother for advice.

3.3 rockstar au series by addiebey starting with disconnect:

jason and duke bond. dick just doesn't get it, but what's new?

Another great no-capes AU. Only two fics from the series, both under 1k, are focused on Duke and Jason, but they are so great. The whole series is, actually, though it’s not finished. I am just grateful even this much exists, but I am definitely bookmarking and subscribing it in case there will be more. Please give this series the attention and praise it deserves.

There are, alas, not many Duke and Jason-centered fics. Though there is another one I wanted to recommend, about Jason training Duke, but I can’t find it for some reason. It was short and funny, and if anyone recognizes this description, I would be glad if you told me.

4. Jason and Dick being bros

4.1 i was naive and hopeful and lost by heroics (figure8)

Clark and Bruce take in a troubled teen.

The The Fosters AU no one asked for.

It’s a part of the series which is one of the best no-capes AU I’ve read, if not the best, and it’s a great family-focused fic with a good parent Bruce. The road for Jason to become Dick’s and the rest of the kids’ brother is slow but greatly written.

4.2 To Reconcile by CasualDanger      

“Babs slapped me at your funeral.”  Jason goes to laugh, but it’s just a cough and his mouth barely even twitches up.  “She hated me in that moment.  I mean, really, really hated me, like I did Talia after I found out Damian had died.  And I wondered,” his voice cracks, eyes glassy now, “did you hate anyone when I was gone?  Because I was gone?”

Short and emotional fic where Dick and Jason open up to each other during pressing circumstances.

4.3  Five Times Dick Grayson Read about Jason Todd in the Newspaper by Engineerd              

If Dick hadn’t been special ordering the Gotham City Gazette, he wouldn’t have found out for - well. Years, at this rate.

Short and very full of emotion story. I love the exploration of Dick’s almost unchanging attitude toward Jason - well, unchanging right before the last time he would read about him (or almost the last time). They’re not really close here, and won’t grow closer, but sometimes siblinghood is like that.

4.4 The View From Jade by lowflyingfruit                

Being transported to the past is not the sort of thing one normally expects. But this having happened, and with no easy way back, Jason's determined to make the most of it. Though the Bat still stalks Gotham's streets, the city's crime is run by the mobs instead of the rogues. There's no Joker yet.

There's no Robin.

Maybe there shouldn't be.

Time Travel Jason&Dick focused AU! One of the best time travel fics where they actually change stuff even if it doesn’t transit to their universe - for exception of their more strong brotherly relationships.

5. Jason and Stephanie being bros

5.1 this time, the loser wins by parkerstorms

They were two sides of the same coin.  They understood each other.  It was nice.  It was a downright relief.  She’d never had a big brother before.

There’s not a lot of Jason and Steph being bros stories I have not mentioned before, but this one is one of them, and a great one too.

6. Jason and Tim being bros

6.1 Bonding Habits of Robins by  GoAwayOlivia                

Giving each other shit is how the bat brothers show they care. Jason and Tim do it particularly well.

It’s a funny and nice fic with exactly what’s said in the summary.

There’s a lot of fics with Jason and Tim being bros but my memorie went blank when I tried to recall. Which is not a statement about their relationships or quality of fics that depict them, it’s just sometimes my memory doesn’t work properly. This is the case with the Jason and Steph, too. As soon as I remember or discover new fics about their relationships, I am going to update this post or maybe create a new one just for the three of them. We’ll see!

7. Batfam Jason-featured sibling relationships

7.1 If the Sky Comes Falling Down (For You)  by  lurkinglurkerwholurks

or, 5 times Jason Todd saved his siblings... and one time they saved him.

It was only by luck that Jason was still there when the bodies came crashing down the street. Bad luck, he would argue. He could hear them long before he could see them, their bodies preceded by the thunderous pounding of boots of asphalt and shouted curses. Three or four figures flashed by his little alleyway, a tight mob followed by a lone, slender figure in a streaming cape.

Summary speaks for itself. It’s a gradual description of Jason slowly coming back to the family after UtRH and starting feeling like their brother.

7.2  this is a long drive (for three robins who don't agree on much) by   drakefeathers

(Bad Robins road trip AU!) Steph’s trip home to Gotham takes a huge detour thanks to Jason and Damian’s conflicts with airport security. She’s stuck driving the two brothers cross-country to reach Tim’s wedding in time.

Damian, Jason & Steph bonding road trip AU that warms your heart. Seriously, if you like any of these characters, you read this.

7.3 on a thin chain of moments and something like faith series  by irnan

Jason really oughta know better than to talk to Bats.

Jason bonding with both Steph and Cass! Love it. It’s fluff and angst, which is hard to pull off together, but it works here. It also, in places, incredibly funny. I love re-reading it from time to time.

Jason Joins the Family fic recs

I got asked in a comment on my Jason joins the family fic if there were any good ones out there. So here are some of the ones I’ve read:

Technically I have read it.  Like a bunch of times. :D It’s only missing one chapter, the epilogue, as of this moment.

In a world where Bruce raised Damian from infancy, Bruce finds Jason in the typical fashion: stealing the tires off his car. Bruce takes him for food and chats with him, and doesn’t like what he sees. He decides to bring Jason home, with the intention of helping him find a better living situation. Obviously, the best living situation for Jason is with Bruce, but it takes a little convincing for both of them to reach that conclusion. Fic is like a slow-burn found family, with look at how a homeless child with a history of abuse would react to having a kind and caring adult suddenly be in his life.

Bruce stumbles upon Jason stealing his tires, and grows immediately concerned when Jason passes out while trying to run. As it turns out, Jason is dehydrated and famished. Bruce takes Jason home to help him recover, and the two of them end up growing close. This fic has a sequel and is super cute. Lots of adorable Bruce & Jason and even Jason & Alfred moments.

The Longer You Stay by emiv

Set in the Nolenverse, Bruce and Selina move to Europe after Bruce quits being Batman. They forge documents saying they’re married and everything, although Selina is adamant it’s totally just documents. They aren’t really married. Then they go to a circus and Bruce decides to take home a newly orphaned kid without consulting her. It only gets worse from there. And Bruce isn’t the only one guilty of picking up new kids. She was quite partial to the little thief they met in Paris. 

We’re Not in Crime Alley Anymore by ChimaeraKitten

Instead of it being a 12-year old Jason Todd jacking Batman’s tires, it’s a 9-year-old. Bruce, being a genius, decides to drug Jason in order to take him home. Jason does not react well, predictably, because clearly people only drug little children to harvest their organs. But they somehow manage to become a family, anyway.

Through the Walls by Maychorian, WIP

TW: rape/non con. Read the tags on ao3. Jason is kidnapped by a freak who abuses him in terrible ways. Adorable 10-year-old Tim Drake was there, watching, as Jason was captured. In an attempt to save Jason, he ends up getting himself kidnapped, too. Months later, Jason escapes, and is able to draw the attention of Nightwing, who helps him to safety and saves Tim, too. It takes all of fourteen seconds for both of them to fall absolutely in love with both of the kids. Now Bruce and Dick have to figure out how to take care of two traumatized little children. 

Gifts From the Sea by Raberba girl, WIP

This is a mermaid AU. Or, sea creature AU? There are superheroes, but Bruce isn’t Batman. He’s an intern at a park like Sea World, where he meets an 8-year-old mermaid named Dick. Basically the first part follows his journey with raising Dick and helping him gain his freedom from the park. Then, he finds a thieving little selkie (a person who can turn into a seal? That’s what it is in this story) named Jason and basically just claims him as his kid. It’s super cute. I don’t even like mythical AUs, or whatever, but this sucked me right in from chapter one and holy cow I love it so much. Very few stories have me daydreaming in the AU, and this one is one of them.

Common People by AmariT, WIP

Jason is the biological child of Bruce AU, where Jason’s mom punts him off on Bruce when he was 13. It takes adjusting to live in Wayne Manor, but he has Dick and Tim there to help him out. There’s an interesting twist on how Catherine ended up being his adoptive mom, like in canon. And some fun angst associated with the fact Bruce is keeping Batman secret. Great story.

I haven’t done an fic recs lately, so here are some ongoing fics I’m reading.

Give Thanks to Broken Bones by @thepartyresponsible, MCU/DC fusion, JayTony, Tony gets a surprise kid the scientist chick from Iron Man 3 and he’s looking for a bodyguard for her while he goes out and Iron Man’s and Jason is the secretive, super hot asshole badass that everyone from Batman to the X-men are recommending. This fic is absolutely amazing.

Chosen Son by Morimaitar, JayDick, Jason is taken in by Roman instead of Bruce and he’s trained and brainwashed and raised to hate Batman and help Roman kill him. This fic is a bit dark but I’m loving it.

Appetence by @violetsmoak, JayTim, Jason wasn’t found by Ra’s when he got resurrected but was found by John Constantine. Also, Jason can see ghosts. He gets pulled back to Gotham and runs into his replacement. Pretty cool so far, and you guys know I can’t resist Jason having any connection/interaction with magic and Constantine. It’s redheaded jay too if you’re into that.

Philtatos by @violetsmoak, JayTim, Jason and Tim are on an art theft case that turns out to involve Eros. He gets hit by cupids arrow and starts to go crazy, seeing himself and Tim in a past life. Not going to spoil who Jason was in a past life but it’s pretty cool.

Precedent by @cdelphiki, batfam gen. Jason gets picked up by a Bruce that already has Damian living with him as a child. This Bruce doesn’t intend to adopt Jason at first, just find a good home for him, but we all know how that’s going to turn out. It’s sweet and adorable.

Check Yourself by Joverie and @meaninglessblah. JayTim, Tim is a figure skater coached by Bruce and Jason is a former skater who was in the same position until a falling out with Bruce and now he’s a hokey player. It has some dark points (Let’s say Jason is being hurt/taken advantage of the owner of his team, you’ll see who that is) but also a lot of nice fluff and some good interactions that mirror the canon crazy well.

I Healed You (Now You Heal Me)

Note: (I am already in the middle of writing Damian and fear gas fic). This was inspired by a Batman Detective Comics #995 comic panel that I saw once on tumblr, about Damian operating on Bruce’s and Alfred’s lungs.

I don’t have a set time for this one so let’s say, after Super Sons and the Grayson comics. Maybe after Things Left Unsaid? If you want this to be in the same verse. 

Robin was patrolling with Superboy when the call came in from Alfred, “Master Robin, your skills are needed immediately at the Cave, there is a medical emergency, and I am afraid of it being beyond my abilities.”

“Understood. Will report ETA as soon as possible. Keep them stable till I get there,” Robin’s quick reply, then turned towards to Superboy, “We are going to test your flight ability with a passenger. Get me to Gotham, more specifically the Batcave as fast as possible,” he ordered.

Superboy looks startled, “But—"

“Superboy, there is an emergency that is above Penny-One’s abilities, with Dr. Thompkins out of the country, means that I am the closest, capable hands, if you cannot get me there in under five minutes, I will call your father,” Robin informs.

Superboy’s face hardens with determination, “Under five minutes? Easy.”

When the boys reached Gotham, Robin directed Superboy a hidden entrance to the Cave and began to tear off his gloves and mask. By the time they reached the actual cave, Bruce was waiting for them and Robin was already asking, “What happened? I need to know every detail.”

“It’s Dick, he was working on a case when Deathstroke got a hold of him,” Bruce recited, “Multiple defensive cuts on his arms and legs, heavy bruising on his chest, arms, and legs, one stab wound to the lower abdomen.” Both bats were running to the medbay as they spoke, not wasting any time, because if they do Dick could die.

“Any poisons? Any previous injuries to that area?”

“None, and not that I know of.”

“Wait here, I will get you when I’m done,” Damian ended the conversation curtly and before Bruce could protest, “More people in there, the bigger risk for infection, Pennyworth is the best to help me succeed. Stay out,” then he walked through the curtains that separate Dick from the rest of the Cave.

Damian enters the curtained off of the medbay expecting blood, much blood in fact- but when he doesn’t, he lets a small breath go and begins to sanitize his hands, last thing Dick needs is an infection. “Report,” he says curtly, needing something to fill the silence.

“Stab wound, just below and right of the navel, nicking the ileum part of the small intestines- no major damage, but bleeding heavily, I have tried my best to replace the blood he has lost,” Alfred lists quickly as he prepares everything Damian could need, Damian puts plastic gloves on and Alfred wraps a surgery gown over his uniform.

“Hrn… the other injuries?” Damian questions, needing something to focus on other than his panic. He can panic after he is done, when Dick is not bleeding out on the table in front of him, when Damian is alone and free of other people.

Alfred seems to realize this and continues on, “I have them either stitched up or covered with a liquid bandage, cannot have him bleed anymore.”

“Agreed, thank you Pennyworth. Now, let’s begin.”

“Of course, Master Damian.”

Halfway through the surgery Damian can hear Jon and Bruce arguing and spares a look over at Alfred and notices that Alfred is just as annoyed, “If you could inform our audience that Grayson is about fifty percent finished and their silence is requested, I would appreciate it, Pennyworth. Though I am trained to work with distractions, I would rather not.”

Alfred swiftly nods his head and turns to the curtain, “Of course, Master Damian. Anything you require before I leave and return?”

“Some music, if you could. My phone is resting on the counter, just put it on shuffle. If Father and Kent do not quiet down, then I can drown them out.” Alfred leaves when the smooth notes of a violin begin to play and Damian’s shoulders begin to relax after a couple of minutes. “Now, Grayson, do not die on me again.”

When Alfred returns, Damian is stitching up the last of Dick’s wounds, and leaves the tools on the tray, feeling heaviness in his bones- his exhaustion finally taking precedence in his mind. “I have finished, Pennyworth. You should look over everything, of course, but my recommendation is one month of complete bedrest then light exercise. I would say two months of bedrest but with it being Grayson… However, when Dr. Thompkins is back in the Untied States, she will need take a look and an official plan,” Damian informs the caretaker, taking his gloves and gown off, then washing his hands again.

“Thank you very much, Master Damian. I will take your consul into consideration,” Alfred says warmly, then placing a hand on the teen’s shoulder, “Perhaps it is time for bed?”

Damian nods his head, “I will write my report, shower, then sleep. I do not know when the doctor is going to be here and I need to be as through as possible. Would you mind if I take my phone?” At Alfred’s refusal, Damian grabs his phone and exits the room, immediately surrounded by Bruce, Clark, and Jon, “The surgery was a success, the stab only nicked the ileum, so heavy blood loss and no septic shock due to the quick response we all had. I expect Grayson to make a full recover and at least one month of complete bedrest then light exercise. Father, Dr. Thompkins needs to look over him for an official order, but it looks like we all were lucky tonight,” Damian reports. Bruce’s and Clark’s shoulders slump slightly at the good news, but Jon still looks worried making Damian curious, “What is wrong, Kent?”

“How are you doing Damian? You just operated on your brother,” Jon inquires, making Damian eyes widen ever so slightly.

“I am fine, thank you. Now, if you excuse me, I have to make a report,” Damian’s voice is not harsh but is hard, and that usually means he is lying.

Jon’s eyes trail after him as Damian walks away.

Dick wakes up the next afternoon, feeling off-balance and in pain. He takes a minute to organize his thoughts and his senses: smells fresh laundered sheets, Kevlar, sweat, and blood, hears the beeping of a heart monitor and deep, heavy breathing, feels a slightly hard mattress, soft sheets, a weight in his hand, and pain everywhere. When he pieces it together he knows where he is: the Batcave medbay. So, he opens his eyes and feels the light pierce his eyes and grumbles, “Ow. What the—”

Apparently, that wakes Damian up and he bites out, “You were stabbed in the abdomen, nicked you ileum and had surgery to sew it back together. Do not get up.” Dick nods at the order and Damian stands up turning the light dimmer lower then brings a small straw to Dick’s lips, “I’m going to ask you questions, answer them as best you can. What is your name?” Dick answers, Damian asks a couple more questions which Dick answers correctly- then, “I will inform Father of your progress.”

But Dick doesn’t want to be alone, so he requests, “Can that wait? I—I’m not in the mood for a lecture at the moment and my stomach is all I can think of at the moment.”

Damian huffs a breath out and ups the morphine drip, “I will hold off on calling Father, but only because I am too tired to get up.”

That makes Dick raise an eyebrow, “What have you been up to, Dami?”

Damian scoffed and replies, “Saving your utter ridiculous ass, Grayson. Who do you think sewed you back together? Dr. Thompkins is out of the country and Alfred’s hands could not stop shaking; so, they called me for emergency surgery.”

Dick’s eyes shoot open, “You did- on me- but that—”

Rolling his eyes at Dick’s stuttering, Damian stood from the chair, “Scoot over, Grayson, I refuse to sleep in that chair any longer.” After processing all of the information, Dick moves to one side of the bed, inviting Damian to lay down beside him. Which is exactly what the teen did- laying his head on Dick’s uninjured shoulder and grasping Dick’s wrist in his hand, feeling the older man’s pulse against his fingertips, “You will be on bedrest for one month, at least, no complaining. Dr. Thompkins is on a flight back to Gotham as we speak and until then you have to listen to Pennyworth and me.”

Dick smiles into the boy’s hair, “Okay, Little D.”

“Of course, Grayson, I was not about to let you die on my table.” After a few minutes, and Dick thinking about going back to sleep when Damian’s voice spoke up quietly- hesitantly, “Grayson?”

“Yes?” Dick whispers back.

“Do not leave me again.”

Dick feels Damian’s hand tighten around his wrist, feels his chest wet with tears, prompting Dick wanting nothing more than to promise the world for this boy in his arms, but can’t. So, he does his best and brushes his hands through Damian’s hair and says, “I promise, I will do everything in my power to return to you, Damian. But that means you can’t leave me either.”

“TT. Fine.”

Bruce thought his family was complete. Sure, Dick might be mad at him and ignoring all his calls, and Damian mad about Dick not returning calls, but that didn't change anything. His family was complete, even if they weren't talking to each other.

Then a scrawny little kid jacked his tires, and Bruce started to question what it takes to be family.

“Jason Peter Wayne,” Bruce shouted, for at least the third time that morning.

It was the first day of school for the kids. 3rd grade for Damian and 8th for Jason.

And it was Tuesday. So it was Alfred’s day off. And the man was still asleep, as far as Bruce could tell.

Which meant Bruce was trying to corral Damian and Jason himself and get their butts in gear. For the first time. In three months.

Considering he had to yell three times up the stairs for Jason, he wasn’t doing very well.

“Jason,” he shouted again, “two more minutes. If you aren’t down here I’m leaving without you and you’ll miss the first day of school.”

After three months of no schedules and the lawlessness of summer, Bruce understood why they were having a difficult time getting a move on, but they were trying his patience.

If this was what the school year was going to be like, maybe Bruce would hire a nanny.

Just to get the boys to school each morning.

Absolutely no one in the house would appreciate that. Least of all, Jason. He’d whine about being at teenager and far too old to be babysat. Just like he did every single time Bruce asked Dick to babysit.

“Jason.”

“I heard you,” Jason yelled back, “I’m coming, chill out.”

i want a fic about jason getting used to living at the manor that’s like.. not exactly an anne of green gables AU but is like. inspired by that. adjacent to that. just about his spirited orphan adventures around the manor. getting into shenanigans. breaking a fancy vase the first week and he hides the evidence and is just freaking out and despairing. can’t sleep. super paranoid and terrified that bruce will kick him out. bruce and alfred are really concerned he’s ill or something but then he confesses and they’re like aksjdlf it’s fine!! jason having issues with school and being upset about it because he knows he can do well but he’s so behind on some subjects and some of the kids are mean to him 😡 but then he makes friends and does well on tests and gets a role in a school play or something and bruce and alfred are like!! see?? we said it would be fine. having little adventures and fantasies like. he looks at the portraits of thomas and martha a lot and wonders if they would like him. sometimes he talks to them a bit. he wanders into the woods beside the manor because he thinks it will be cool! wilderness! and gets super lost because he’s a city boy and maybe sees a deer for the first time and is like :0

Jason had no idea what to expect when it came to Thanksgiving.

He’d read about what Thanksgiving was supposed to be. Many times, actually. It was supposed to be a day filled with food and family.

He’d, well. Obviously, he’d never experienced that before.

Ever.

Dad almost always had the day off, no matter what job he was working, be it legit or not. Which meant he was home. Usually drunk. And Mom didn’t put effort into things when he was like that.

Days spent like that were never pleasant. Uncomfortably tense, at the best. Jason didn’t like thinking back to any of it.

Then since Mom died, Jason hadn’t even kept track of what month it was, much less bothered to know whether it was Thanksgiving. Why would it have mattered?

It’s not like he’d find a massive Thanksgiving feast in the trash.

The homeless shelters might have put on Thanksgiving dinners, sure, but Jason couldn’t enter those places without getting Social Services all up in his business.

No. Thanksgiving had pretty much always been just another day. Nothing remarkable, nothing special.

Maybe that would change, now. Considering Dick was coming home for Thanksgiving, Jason assumed that meant Thanksgiving with the Waynes was how Thanksgiving was supposed to be.

But he didn’t want to get his hopes up, just in case.

Bruce sat him down the night before, however, and went over what to expect the next day. Which was nice of him.

It meant he wasn’t going to be blindsided by the fact he had to come up with something to be ‘thankful’ for at dinner, since they went around the table and picked something before they ate. Bruce said he could pick anything and it wouldn’t hurt anyone’s feelings, even if everyone else said ‘family’ or something. If he wanted to say books, he could say that. If he wanted to pick a specific person in his life, or just the moon in the sky, it was entirely up to him.

Jason wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted to say. He’d spent the rest of the night thinking about it, before he went to sleep. There was certainly a lot he was thankful for, but he couldn’t just… say it.

That would be… embarrassing.

Yeah.

And sappy. He didn’t like being sappy. Sappy was for books and, well, Bruce. Not Jason.

So he’d just have to keep thinking.

Maybe he would say the moon. Just to make Bruce laugh.

Dick felt awkward in his own home. It was a weird feeling to have, but he did. Everything was tense between him and Bruce, and that sucked. Apparently Bruce couldn’t handle it, either, because he hadn’t even spent 20 minutes with them watching the parade before he’d left to go hang out with Alfred and Jason instead. And that was another thing. Jason. He was a good kid and all, Dick supposed. He had nothing against Jason. He could be kind of a jerk, but it’s not like he didn’t have reason to be a jerk. From his perspective, Dick had been hurting Damian for no reason. If nothing else, had had to respect the new kid wanting to defend Damian. He’s glad there was someone around to do that, when Dick wasn’t. Just kind of sucked that Jason felt the need to defend Damian from Dick. The real problem with Jason was Dick didn’t know him. But everyone else did. And they all adored him. It made Dick feel like an outsider in his own family. Then everyone else just felt… icy toward him. Like none of them knew exactly how to talk to him, one on one. It was fine if they were together as a group. It wasn’t quite so awkward then, but when it was just him and Alfred, or just him and Damian, everything felt off. Dick hated it. Maybe that was why he’d turned in for the night a little earlier than everyone else. Well, when he said turned in, what he really meant was lying in his bed, staring up at the ceiling for an hour. But whatever, same thing. No one bothered him. That is, until someone did. “You were wrong you know,” Jason said, from just beyond the threshold of his room. Dick craned his head just enough to see the kid standing there, nervously, like he were ready to bolt at the twitch of Dick’s face. Great. Now Dick was going to feel guilty when he scared Jason off. “‘Scuse me,” he said anyway, knowing it was probably going to come off rude and standoffish and Jason would run. Whatever. Might as well get it over with. “About Bruce,” Jason said, surprising Dick more when he took a couple steps into Dick’s room, rather than bolt at his less-than-sweet tone, “He didn’t out-stubborn me.” Continue reading on Ao3
