Okay, but just the contrast in writing/performance between Jaune and Ruby in their different breakdowns.
Tumblr media
Miles is giving Jaune this very up-front, very overt, very traditionally dramatic ‘man losing his mind out of isolation and guilt’ performance. He shouts, he screams, he makes big, attention-getting monologues and outbursts where he lays out all his pains and torments for the audience to hear. Again, all in what we’d call a very ‘traditionally’ dramatic fashion.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Lindsay is giving Ruby this very restrained, grounded, visceral, far more raw and ugly performance. Ruby is generally quiet and restrained until something sets her off. She doesn’t shout or scream but instead lashes out with things she’s been holding in all this time seemingly at random. She’s not ‘explaining’ what or how her problems are, she’s just VENTING. Because that’s all she CAN do right now.
And it all works brilliantly with both the characters AND what the scene needs to accomplish.
I think from a character perspective, Jaune is making these big, overt dramatic breakdowns in a subconscious attempt to GET attention, as an unconscious cry for help. Specifically, because Jaune is deep down DESPERATE for absolution. He’s become so consumed by guilt over what he did to Penny that it’s now taken over everything he does, and deep down he’s desperate for someone or something to absolve him of that guilt.
But whereas Jaune is dealing with something recent, relatively speaking, what we’re seeing with Ruby is simply the result of coping mechanism she’s been using to compartmentalize, manage and repress her trauma likely her entire life, which has LONG since been pushed past it’s limits, FINALLY breaking down. What we’re seeing start to come out is likely a LIFETIME of repressed pain and trauma. Which ironically she CAN’T let out nearly as obviously as Jaune is doing because she’s still trying to keep it in. Because she doesn’t know HOW to be open with her pain.
And putting Jaune opposite Ruby in this episode only serves to exacerbate Ruby’s problems. Because Jaune’s far more overt and obvious breakdowns just end up drawing the attention of Weiss, Blake, Yang and even the audience AWAY from Ruby’s already subtle and restrained breakdown.
Tumblr media
Until it’s too late and Ruby simply checks out entirely.

Pretty Face
Disclaimer- Nsfw
Yang:Weiss, I have a profound and serious question. Top or bottom? And I mean spiritually.
Weiss:That last part doesn’t make this profound.
Yang:But I am serious.
Weiss:..I’m a bottom at heart.
Yang:How much so?
xxxxxx
Weiss couldn’t help but slowly think back to a “special” encounter with Jaune. She had really gotten all dolled up for him. Her hair was freshly curled to give her ponytail a drill shape. Icy blue eyeshadow with carefully managed mascara and lipstick to match. All that money and effort in makeup for the soul purpose of it running down her face.
She could barely breathe or hear the music in their hotel room over the sound of her throat closing around her boyfriend’s length. Not that she was listening to it. Her ears only cared about the constant sound of a gruff “good girl” that kept her eyes watering and on knees. Her carefully done hair felt the firm grasp of his hand controlling head, keeping it right between his legs while her own dripped more than the spit that ran down her chin. Weiss was an utter mess, but the sultry gaze looking down at her told such a beautiful lie that she couldn’t resist.
“That’s it. Keep making that pretty face.”
Gods, she wanted this moment to last forever; this feeling that dulled her mind and flooded her senses. Right to the point flood poured down her throat. Her entire body felt warm and overwhelmed. She couldn’t even tell who this was for anymore, until the answer came sliding out of her mouth. As she took a first proper breath after what felt like ages, her face remained right where it was, lapping up what dripped from the swollen tip, before moving onto leaving her lipstick all over on the package responsible for the taste in her mouth. She could still feel her ponytail under his control and Weiss was just fine with that.
“What do you say?”
“Thank you~” a twinge of pain on her scalp hit as she felt his grip tighten. Silly her. How could she forget? “Daddy. Thank you, Daddy.”
“Anything for my girl. Now then, your makeup isn’t finished yet.”
Weiss dragged her tongue all the way up along his girth before filling her throat again, her head bobbing as she devoured him; until her makeup was finally perfect.
xxxxxx
Yang:Weiss?
Weiss:*bright red*……I ask and provides; or rather, indulges my more conservative side. Let’s leave it at that.
Yang:You were totally having a flashback to something but I won’t pry too far. I might have to share my own dirty laundry otherwise. *walks away* thanks for indulging my curiosity.
Weiss:….*pulls out scroll*
Jaune:Hey Snow Angel. Everything okay.
Weiss:Yeah. Just…thinking.
Jaune:About?
Weiss:If……If you can help me with my makeup later?
Jaune:….
Jaune:Of course. I’ll make sure you look real pretty.

Pilot, I know you primarily bully Jaune. But would you mind having a go at Papa Arc talking to the Vacuo mural?
Tumblr media
Orion Arc is not a hero, even though his son always thought he was. He’s just a man who loves his family and tries his best to do right by them.
So it’s more than a little strange standing there, in front of a mural of his own son’s face. His boy immortalized and honored in ways Orion could never dream of.
His son looks like a stranger.
“Mr. Branwen thought it might help to talk to ya.” Orion’s hand brushes over the palm prints of countless children, all paying their respect to his boy. “Don’t see much point, ain’t gonna bring you back.”
His son watches him, all quiet confidence and bravery. A true warrior, a hero. Where is his brash anxious son who begged to join the Huntsman Academies? How much of his son did he lose when Jaune finally left home? Somewhere along the way his boy grew into a man and he wasn’t there to help him.
“Your uh…” He clears his throat. “Your mother misses you.” And it sounds pathetic even as he says it. Even in front of a facsimile of his son he can’t say what he needs to.
“She was beside herself when you didn’t come back from Haven.” So was he, even more so than his wife. Orion paced the house for days, worry driving him to throw himself into work, into anything that would take his mind off the attack and the fate of his boy. “We were so relieved to hear from Saph about you and your friends.”
His friends. A group of seven that from all accounts Jaune grew closer to than even his sisters. Orion glances up at the others in the mural. Four of which fell alongside his boy, and the other three were left grieving.
Ren, Nora, and Oscar, he remembers them being called. He never thought he’d see his grief echoed in faces so young.
“As soon as we saw the broadcast, your mother was packin’ our bags.” Orion chuckles. “You shoulda seen her, she was fixin’ to march up to the General herself and teach him a lesson. If I ever wondered where you got your fire, I got my answer.”
His face falls, crumpling like paper. “And I triedta douse that fire.” How many times did he tell Jaune it was okay if he failed? How many times did he refuse to train him? How many times did he let his fear guide him to crush his son’s dreams?
“When you walked into the livin’ room with your transcripts in hand sayin’ you were gonna be a Huntsman whether I wanted it or not, why…” His eyes are stinging. If there’s anything his son inherited from him, it’s his tendency for emotions to live near the surface. “Why that was the proudest day of my life.”
He’d never been more proud. Never. His boy standing there with those papers clutched in his fist, and a defiant look on his face. “I won’t let you down.” Jaune had said.
You could never let me down. It’s what he should’ve said. Why didn’t he just say it?
Orion scrubs the heel of his hand into his eyes. It does nothing to stop the flow of tears. “Did I ever once tell ya how proud I am of you?” His voice is cracking and hitching, but if he stops talking now Orion knows he’ll never start again.
“You’re so brave and you don’t quit when things get tough. I saw how hurt you were after the Fall of Beacon, but you just got right back on that horse.” His baby boy, the most caring and most stubborn of all his children. Strapping the family sword back onto his hip because “Somebody has to, dad.”
Letters where it’s clear his boy isn’t saying half the trouble, but he’s saying enough that they know what trouble is. Hearing about the attack on Haven, a week and a half of terror. Saphron sending word that Jaune made it to Argus.
And then nothing. Nothing until the broadcast from Miss Rose.
Packing in a whirlwind, sending the girls to stay with Saphron. Renting the first available airship to Vacuo and contending with his wife’s motion sickness. By the time they got there, they were met halfway by a near armada.
But no Jaune.
Orion’s hand rests on Jaune’s painted cheek. A child’s hand against the larger-than-life hero his boy grew into when he wasn’t there.
Did he ever tell his son how much he loves him?
“Come back to us,” Orion begs, no longer trying to stem the flow of tears. Why bother? His son isn’t here to see them.

Forgiveness
Ren: *visiting with Arkos couple after a fight with Nora*
Ren: *sighs* Thank you again for letting me come by on such short notice, Jaune…I just…needed some space from Nora right now…
Jaune: *doing dishes after dinner while Pyrrha plays with Arkos kiddos in the living room* Hey, it’s no problem! The twins love when their favorite uncle visits! *pauses awkwardly* We can set up the pull-out bed after I finish, if you need to stay the night…?
Ren: Thank you again…*hands Jaune a cleaned plate*
Jaune: *stacks plate in drying rack and starts on a glass*
Jaune: …you know, Ren, if you wanna talk-
Ren: *interrupting suddenly* How did you forgive Pyrrha?
Jaune: *nearly drops glass* W-what…?!
Ren: I-I’m sorry, I’m not very good at…expressing my emotions or talking about others…
Ren: But after what happened with Nora, I need to know!
Ren: Back when Beacon fell, Pyrrha sent you away before she went up in the tower…you said that was your first kiss, but then she used it to trap you in a locker. It was a betrayal of your trust when Pyrrha chose to send you away and go to a fight she couldn’t hope to win.
Ren: I could see that she hurt you, Jaune. Even when she came back, I saw the pain she caused you, but now…
Ren/Jaune: *look over at Pyrrha playing with squealing Arkos children, balancing one on each shoulder while squatting up and down*
Ren: …and now, I’ve never seen two people more happy or in love.
Ren: So please, I need to know…
Ren: How did you do it? How did you work past something like that and stay together?
Jaune: *puts down the glass and pauses, watching Pyrrha do push-ups with her son clinging to her back while her daughter crawls underneath*
Jaune: …I gotta tell you, Ren, it was really rough for us, when Pyrrha came back. At first, I was like, SUPER happy to see her again, you know? It was like everything could go back to the way it was before Beacon fell!
Jaune: But after that feeling wore off, I remembered all that stuff you were just talking about, like how Pyr kissed me, and then shoved me in a locker and ran off without me to get killed instead of coming with us, and it started to bug me.
Jaune: …like, I REALLY started to resent her.
Ren: We all noticed. You stopped talking around her and stopped looking her in the eye. I think Pyrrha almost cried every time she saw you because you seemed so distant.
Jaune: Yeah…I was kinda bitter…Looking back, I know what she did was a dumb teenage decision made under a lot of unfair pressure, but at the time I was still mad, and I guess I kinda wanted to see her hurt because she hurt me…
Jaune: …in hindsight, it was pretty shitty of me to be all passive-aggressive and cold just to hurt her back, and I was being a dumb teenager too…
Ren: Did that realization make the difference?
Jaune: Nope.
Jaune: Believe it or not, I called my mom.
Jaune: I told her everything that was going on, and my problems with Pyrrha, and she gave me some advice her grandpa told her about relationships:
Jaune: *does a southern accent* “When the goin’ gets tough, ya only have two options: Ya either stop lovin’ ‘em, or ya love ‘em a whole lot more!” 🤠
Ren: …so…
Ren: …that’s the secret?
Jaune: *resumes putting cleaned plates away in cabinet* …weeeeelllll…there was a lot more to it than that! Pyrrha and I had to have a big talk about our relationship, and there were a lot of tears and apologies, but great-grandpappy’s advice kinda made me sit down and decide whether I wanted to be with Pyrrha or not, and once I decided that I wanted to be with her I could figure out what I had to do…
Jaune: *feels an impact as his son glomps onto his leg like a koala*
Jaune: *grins down at Arkos kid* And I think I picked the better choice! *scoops up his son as Pyrrha gathers up Arkos daughter for bedtime*
Ren: …your great-grandpappy sounds like a wise man, Jaune…
Ren: If you don’t mind, I think I need to make a call.
Ren later called Nora and they made up on Jaune and Pyrrha’s pull-out couch.
Nora: *snuggled against Ren’s chest* I’m glad you called, Ren, but what made you decide to give me another chance?
Ren: Someone gave me some advice that helped me decide what I wanted:
Ren: *in a terribly-executed southern accent* “When tha goin’ gets tuff, ya only got two opshuns: stop luvin ‘um, or ya luv um a whole lot more!”
Nora: …
Nora: Ren, that was sweet and touching and everything, but that accent was, like, the WORST accent I’ve ever heard! 🤣
Ren: Nora, please, it wasn’t THAT bad…
Nora: I love you, Rennie, but that was so bad it was offensive! 😂

remember how ruby promises weiss that team rwby would not leave her sight in atlas, and then they all stand by her side in support when jacques shows up?
promise kept.
remember how ruby promises jaune that they'd meet them at argus, and they did?
promise kept.
remember how one of ruby's issue with leaving was because the red prince made a promise to help them get to the tree if she won?
ruby "it carries a mother's promise" rose takes her promises seriously and no wonder why because somebody didn't keep theirs.

The irony of Ruby spending a volume thinking she’s a failure, that she’s made mistakes wherever she goes, that she only ever makes things worse... only to return to Vacuo and see before her eyes all the successes she’s had. The friends she fought for, who came together at Beacon. The allies she made, who saved Haven. The tower she helped raise against all odds, in Atlas.
The world, she spoke to, who heard her ask for help and said “we’ll do whatever we can.” And they came. From Patch, from Vale, from Mistral, from Argus, from Mantle, from Atlas, from Menagerie, they came.
Salem doesn’t face a school unprepared or a kingdom divided this time. She doesn’t just face a kingdom united.
Ruby did the one thing Ozpin never could. Now, Salem faces a world unified.
Because of one simple thing. A smaller, more honest soul.
The Girl Who Spoke To The World.
