batfam as band kids. walk with me here...

dick is a trombonist- he was pretty bad at when he first started out because his arms were too short to fully extend the slide lmfao,,,,,, it was never really one of his passions but he got quite good and still enjoys playing now and then

jason played trumpet. enough said (but seriously there's no other option- although i think he had a tendency to rage quit his practice sessions, and probably dropped out of band after grade 10. HOWEVER I could totally see him playing guitar as well and maybe joining jazz?)

tim is probably a flautist and made his brothers scare off anyone who bullied him for it,,,,,, maybe he would also learn to beatbox with it or smth cool like that. i think he's actually REALLY good and has even made it to top chairs district/state honor bands before. (not exactly sure how competitive njmea is though someone help me out pls)

damian is......okay damian might be the outlier and end up taking orchestra. it's okay though they forgive him for it. although i think it would be really funny if he tried clarinet, literally couldn't make a single sound, and immediately demanded that Bruce switch him over after one (1) day of trying

cass is a double threat i think she plays keyboard in jazz band (to an insane level) but she also plays flute. however she has a grudge against concert band (particularly marches) and (to the annoyance of her band director) prefers to improvise her parts

duke plays sax- mainly alto, but his favorite is bari. he wishes there were more cooler bari parts in traditional concert band rep (he's tired of upbeats, okay?!). surprisingly he's not in jazz with cass at school (couldn't fit it into his schedule), but he does play in a jazz-contemporary band outside of school.

steph is a casual euphonium player- she did her first year of band to fulfill the requirement for one year of a music elective, and only stayed in it because she knew a lot of people in the class. she also likes bass clarinet, but is NOT a fan of treble clef, so she's slowly learning it on the side.

(bonus: bruce was raised to play classical piano, but quit after his parents died. his kids are slowly helping him find his love for music again, and recently alfred heard him take 'clair de lune' (you KNOW he still knows it by heart) back out again.)

notice I didn't put anyone on clarinet...i think i have very high standards for clarinet player vibes, and none of them really stood out to me.

anyway they all have family jam sessions semi-regularly and maybe sometimes publish original music under pseudonyms

Instruments I think BSD characters would play !! (ft. the ADA and the PM!)

Atsushi - Flute. Guy flute energy radiates off of him at Chernobyl levels.

Dazai - Piano, but he could probably play any instrument if he tried hard enough.

Ranpo - Alto Sax, but only because he likes using flavoured reeds.

Kunikida - Basson. A percentage of his salary goes to buying reeds.

Yosano - Oboe. Tried repairing the chips in her reed with her ability (didn’t work).

Kyouka - Piccolo! Tiny instrument for the tiny detective :3

Tanizaki - Trumpet (offensively).

Kenji - Any percussion instrument, but specifically the cowbell.

Fukuzawa - Timpani. His patience is only challenged when tuning it.

Naomi - Cello. Does everything but practice in the practice rooms.

Chuuya - Electric guitar, acoustic guitar, all the guitars and any guitar.

Kouyou - Harp, but in a casual way.

Akutagawa - Violin. Only corrects his posture when performing at concerts.

Gin - Bass clarinet. She’s just so cool so obviously she has to play the raddest instrument.

Higuchi - Trombone. Wishes she could carry the PM as much as she carries the band.

Tachihara - Drumkit, and refuses to play anything else except for the snare drum.

Mori - Mainly conducts, but also knows how to play piano + other string instruments.

Hirotsu - Tuba, but had to switch to percussion because he doesn’t have enough lung capacity.

Kajii - Tenor Sax. Whenever he makes a mistake he says it’s just “jazz”.

Love Live! School Idol Honor Band

this took me wayyyyy too long to figure out and edit together but i'm very proud of the balance of this ensemble!! explanations (for most of them at least) below the cut!

μ's

honoka: trumpet obviously. she's been shown playing the bugle and has the energy to match.

kotori: flute. kotori has flute player vibes. i swear i've seen her play the flute somewhere and if i haven't the image fits so well.

umi: french horn. again, vibes.

hanayo: oboe. needs a really specific skillset to get it to sound good and hanayo seems like she'd be that kind of specialist.

rin: percussion. what else could it be? the sheer energy of that joy and whimsy must be harnessed to make music by hitting things.

maki: in the spirit of avoiding the low-hanging fruit, i'm giving her the flute as well.

nico: trumpet. how else is she supposed to get noticed?

eli: tenor sax. she has the right kind of cool for it.

nozomi: baritone sax. i don't need to elaborate.

Aqours

chika: trumpet. she looks up to honoka so she'd play the same instrument.

you: percussion. i am projecting.

riko: clarinet. i think most of the piano players will end up having woodwind instruments.

yohane: tuba. i think the image of yohane with a tuba is both hilarious and very fitting.

hanamaru: contrabass. it fits very well but i don't know why.

ruby: flute. following in her sister's footsteps

dia: flute. her perfectionist nature lends itself to flute playing.

kanan: trombone, she has a very cool and calm vibe that suits it.

mari: euphonium. solely because she reminds me too much of asuka tanaka from hibike euphonium.

Nijigasaki

ayumu: clarinet. the og 9 are all based on the marching in harmony set

setsuna: trombone. she also has the chaos to match.

ai: percussion. also based on that one magazine art of her holding drumsticks.

lanzhu: also percussion. she has percussion vibes.

kasumi: trumpet. also because she wants to play solos.

rina: percussion.

shizuku: piccolo.

shioriko: french horn. she has the same vibes as umi as far as instrument choice.

karin: alto sax.

kanata: euphonium.

emma: tuba. her marching in harmony card has a sousaphone, which for all intents and purposes is a tuba with the pipes wrapped in such a way to facilitate marching.

mia: alto sax. not entirely sure why but again, avoiding the piano, and this makes sense.

Liella!

kanon: euphonium. she IS kumiko oumae from hibike euphonium, which probably why i like her so much tbh.

keke: french horn. partially for ensemble balance but i can see it.

sumire: trombone. it's flashy and perfect for showbiz.

chisato: percussion. so many circles. moving around like that is also kind of a dance in and of itself.

ren: oboe. she has the elegance for it.

kinako: clarinet. her character arc reminds me most of a clarinet player's

mei: trombone. she's kinda like a trombone herself in a way i can't really articulate.

shiki: tuba. i legitimately can't see her playing anything else because tuba fits so well.

natsumi: alto sax. flashy. she picked it up again after joining liella and actually put some work into it.

margarete: french horn. something something vienna philharmonic something something beethoven symphony.

tomari: bass clarinet. fits too well.

Hasunosora

(i don't know much about them so this is purely vibes and to balance out the band)

kaho: trumpet.

sayaka: clarinet.

rurino: alto sax.

kozue: flute.

tsuzuri: bass clarinet. the way she acts around sayaka reminds me of how one of the senior bass clarinetists was around one of the clarinetists.

megumi: clarinet.

kosuzu: clarinet.

ginko: flute.

hime: bassoon.

and obviously yuu is the conductor.

i have also put a little thought into the seating chart and percussion part assignments. nozoeli, shikimei, and tsuzusaya are sat together bc of course they are. kinako and ren are next to each other as kind of like a mentor/mentee kinda thing, and similar logic with dia and ruby. trumpets i probably put the most thought into. i have chika as first chair ahead of honoka in second chair as kind of a symbol of how she got Aqours to shine like µ's, and possibly even brighter. kasumi is just behind nico but their auditions were pretty similar. inspired by that one part from the sifas main story where the two of them hold a joint stream to see who the fans love more and they both fail to attract much good attention. kaho is brand new on the trumpet; she picked it up because it looked cool and then realized there was a very steep learning curve. kind of like hazuki katou from hibike if that makes sense. ai and rina are with their marching in harmony instruments. rin has crash cymbal energy. you and lanzhu are focused on mallets mainly so i gave them marimba and vibraphone. chisato is on timpani because four big circles. that said the percussionists know how to play everything and they'll switch around for each piece.

anyway would love to hear y'all's thoughts on this! i love putting the love live girlies in situations where they play instruments :3

I know you said before that you have the education in music, do you mind my asking what instrument(s) you play? And what is your fave? And is there any others you'd like to learn?

I primarily played Violin-never good enough to be concertmaster, but good enough to party close by and get into a fairly well regarded and competitive music school. I also learned viola,cello, and a little bass. I actively played viola my senior year because we didn’t have a lot [of good ones] Viola was cool because I actually was first chair in the section and reading alto clef is something a lot of people don’t even know exists.

Legally speaking I also could do vocals. I only did chorus until freshman year of high school, but I still did musicals and stuff. I was a first soprano there and can still hit those Mariah Carey whistle notes (albeit badly) on the drive to work-despite my normal speaking voice erring in that androgynous zone my entire life.

I did want to initially play clarinet-but at the time you couldn’t be in both band and orchestra and Violin has (still) always been my passion.

I did always want to learn piano as well. Like I know which keys are which and can read the music, but my hands doing two different things just has never happened.

for sleepover saturday, do you have any oboe concerto (or other concerto) recs? I want to listen to concertos more but I have no clue where to start

my own random music rec is brahms alto rhapsody I have absolutely no idea how well-known it is but I keep listening to it and going insane

loooove the kalliwoda concertino in f. she is my fave. i think concertinos should count. mozart is your bog standard oboe quartet everybody learns it. marcello is also classic and probably the best known baroque oboe solo piece outside of js bach and vivaldi i would hazard to say. hashtag c minor though d minor is for freaks. then vaughan williams has probably the most iconic oboe concerto of the twentieth century and i think it's great to listen to but trying to learn it myself in undergrad was punishing, didn't speak to me musically. some other wildcard oboe concertos, i really like josef fiala's rep even though they're kind of just bog standard classical concerti. and the grunge concerto (by scott mcallister) is. difficult to adequately describe.

as for non oboe concerti. i loooove mozart's clarinet concerto. and the flute and harp concerto. donizetti has kind of a fun english horn concertino. oh and fiala has a really great concerto for clarinet and english horn, what a fun combo of soloists. mercadante has a good flute concerto in e minor. uhhhh. strauss horn concerto is kinda fun. oh and the haydn trumpet concerto in e flat. and vivaldi has some recorder concerti that are just really fun/ny to watch performed

and to pay lip service to the string concertos i will shout out the dvorak and saint saens cello concertos, mendelsson and brahms violin concertos, stamitz for viola, and the bottesini for bass. there's an endless number of string (esp violin) concerti out there so you might be better off asking a string player for more thorough recs. oh also shoutout to the vivaldi mandolin concertos. i saw avi avital live once right before the pandemic and it was doooooope

and there's about a million and two piano concertos out there so i won't go too deep into those but anyway my favorites are tchaikovsky no 1, gershwin, and beethoven no 5. also ravel has a cool piano concerto for the left hand. and the mozart concertos like. roughly nos. 17-25 which they play fucking constantly on my local classical radio station. and the one in f for 2 (or 3) pianos. that one's fun

Band Kid Ramblings

because it is the end of the school year and thus so many bands things have happened in the past two months and also I am very tired and when I am tired I rambles

We got first place in a competition! That was fun. Previously our band has never gotten gold/first place (at least out of recent memory).

Then we got to go visit multiple museums and that was amazing (And Dave & Busters, food bad, DDR is the best).

And then they put so many neurodivergent overstimulated kids on a cruise. Probably not their best idea to be fair. Got some great photos of the city-line at night tho!

Also jazz band season ended which is sad. My jazz band was more like a jazz combo, as I quote, "We have one trumpet, his name is [Bob], and he plays clarinet."

Our pieces were really fun! I played melody the entire time during Girl From Ipanema (on flute), other than when our vibraphone player was playing. I hate the rhythm but once you hear the song in your head it is a okay.

Marching band season is here again as well! More so we had our two days of preseason and then we start up again in August with a band camp that I'm arriving two days late for, jet-lagged and sounding vaguely Scottish.

The Matador themed show this year has amazing music. I love Spanish style marches and now being a brass playing in the marching band (I joined mello this year) heightens that with cool melody bits.

However, I am the only mello. (the only other mello got moved to baritone because the other two baritones are a - Drum Major 1, and b - a guy who has only played cello before) And with this I don't know if I'm going to be grouped with the altos or the trumpets. Not even my band directors or the people who wrote the music know. I've even written in my music when I'm a Trumpet or an Alto Saxophone.

(just the ones I have thought about)

gregory plays clarinet + musical theater. he prefers musical theater but also just likes doing plays. as you may expect, he practices incessantly and as a result is the best in his band class, (which may have also had something to do with his prior musical experience at yardale.) whenever there is a solo to be gotten, the teacher makes it out to be a huge surprise whenever they select the soloist, but nobody is ever surprised and likely groan when gregory is selected.

wendy plays clarinet too, also playing it quite well, although not as excessively as gregory does. same with musical theater. she’s fairly good at singing in the sense of being in key nearly all the time, and having a strong voice, and competent on stage. she has a lot of interest in common with gregory in the music field, hence their friendship. (I’ve had an idea floating around in my brain of wendy auditioning for belle and grwgory gaston in beauty and the beast xDD) shes also one of the best in the band room and practices frequently.

christophe likely would never want to do any kind of musical anything on his own, although gregory would convince him to join band eventually. he would either join clarinet with gregory, or bassoon. he isn’t particularly good, but not completely lost. he’s maybe at the upper lower end of the”where he needs to be” in band class. I think that grwgory would slowly convince him to join musical theater with him,, but christophe being christophe he would never act on stage, so he would opt for backstage crew.

as for pip, he plays flute and sings in choir. he isn’t amazing at flute, but he’s overall pretty solid. I think he would just be absolutely overjoyed by being able to play that he doesn’t even care if he isn’t very good. he just genuinely likes to play flute, which is why he practices quite frequently. (although not very effectively.) same applies for choir, he just genuinely enjoys singing even though he isn’t THAT good at it. like he isnt bad at it, but his singing isn’t what you would call good either. little fella just having the time of his life in there:DD

i honestly think that estella probably wouldn’t do anything musical at all, but if she did it would be cello. she just seems like a cello kind of person idk. she can play it pretty up to speed. like not incredible but like to the point where she can get irritated whenever people are struggling real bad, which is very common in their orchestra class. she has like six packs on her eyeballs from rolling her eyes at this point. (i feel like all the strings would also be atrocious)

damien would go with alto sax (the one i play :D) or viola. he would also do piano but most schools don’t have piano :’) (atleast mine doesn’t.) his dad wanted him to have some form of extracurriculars but he is too antisocial for sports so his dad insisted on an instrument. whenever guests come over damien is hoping and praying that his dad doesn’t remember he can play an instrument :’) (“did you know that damien is learning an instrument at school? oh my gosh!! he’s gotten so good!!! damien, you should play something for them!!” “*whisper yelling after damien refuses* damien! show our guests your skills!”)

rebecca would do piano, (if it’s available) or violin. she already took violin lessons so she chose that one so she was less lost when she joined mid way through the year. (not that she couldn’t learn it in her own really fadt, bc she totally could, but she has social anxiety.) in the off chance that her parents make her try something new, she would play oboe. Idk her personality js seems like an oboe idk how to describe it :’) she would be really good at it and one of the better players in the room.

mark would also opt for piano if the school offers it, but if not he would go for the French horn because he thinks it’s cool. also he really likes the way it looks, and also he didn’t want to do one of the instruments he already knew because that’s boring. he would get up to speed pretty fast and end up one of the best in the french horn section, which pisses a lot of people off who couldn’t even get that good in the time before mark& rebecca came to the school.

so like these are just the characters who i rlly thought about whenever the hell i came up with the musical idea,, so I might make more. js lmk if you want any particular character/ hc or anything abt the characters in music

[what's my favorite instrument] Mysterious how am I supposed to answer this :( I play clarinet. I have an oboe that I'm trying to learn this summer, but I haven't been doing that a lot lol.

I have a list of instruments I want/want to learn. I used to play violin but I don't anymore bc we returned the violin and I would like to pick it up again. I'd also like to learn viola because it looks cool but apparently they have an entire different fucking clef?? called an alto clef??? like wtf why would they do that to me

I'd also like to learn saxophone. Either soprano, alto, or tenor, idrc. But it's a cool instrument. Id also like to play bass clarinet because it is literally the same as normal clarinet just Big. it's in the treble clef and everything. It's just Big clarinet. I would love to learn guitar. it seems like such an important piece for like background music on tracks and just. I wanna learn it. and its the most common thing that people use for chords. I have a piano that I fuck around with, but I don't know how to use chords and shit but I know how to play the shit out of the melody.

I also need to learn to read the bass clef. I played flute in 4th grade and I'd kind of like to play it again

[what color is my room painted, and what would I like to change it to] okay. so. like AGES ago we were gonna paint my room. and we painted two walls. we got light blue on the east and marshmallow white on the west. the other walls (North and south) are painted VERY VERY light pink so light it is white. since that's the color my sister had. we were gonna paint the other window wall (north) blue and the non-window wall white (south) but it never happened. so now I have mismatched walls.

The blue is rly nice, but if I moved, I think I'd paint three walls light lavender, and one the marshmallow white.

Band kid me was actually very cool she got pretty good at b flat clarinet, then contra alto clarinet (badass instrument), then bass clarinet, she went to concert band camp two years and made herself in charge of ordering custom varsity style band shirts for us all. She was just also a little smug about being the person that the band tuned to 🫢

What instrument the crew of Destiny played in high school band, based on vibes:

Scott: trumpet bc it's loud. and like a “normal” mainstream instrument? I would also accept clarinet, bc it's straight also a boring instrument.

Young: Saxophone bc he thinks it's cool. I would also accept French horn bc I do get a brass vibe from him and he's just gotta be that guy whose music is written in a completely different key.

Brody: Flute/piccolo. He's first chair, takes it seriously, and likes making music that sounds good.

Park: In concert band she's first chair bassoon, bc a single reed instrument wasn't interesting enough, and for marching band* she's pit- she's one of those people with a double set of mallets in each hand absolutely rocking the marimba.

Telford: trombone. If he accidentally hits you in the face with this large mobile instrument it's bc you got in his way.

Greer: tuba/sousaphone. You will not forget he is here and if you don't get out of his way he will run you over. Also if you fuck with the woodwinds he will run you over.

Chloe: Clarinet bc it's a middle kind of instrument, and it would theoretically be easy to switch to sax or oboe if she wants and i feel like that option without commitment fits her. She secretly really enjoys playing the bass clarinet but only offers if the director suggests they need someone to do it. Marching season she's in the color guard.

Eli: percussion/pit. Percussion is about switching between several different instruments and paying attention to a lot of different things, and also being in the back of the band and playing computer games when no one is looking.

Spencer: drumline, quad tenors. He spends concert season practicing for drumline.

Volker: Tenor saxophone. He will correct you if you say he plays "the saxophone" to clarify it's "tenor sax" and he takes a lot of pleasure in explaining the differences between alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone.

James: Oboe but marches clarinet* and wouldn't be caught dead in color guard. She's very good but doesn't sit better than third chair.

Varro: trumpet, but in a good way. He plays in the jazz band too.

TJ: Flute, marches color guard. (I dunno, I don't get strong vibes for her other than "band mom.")

Camile: euphonium because she's rebellious/wants to do her own thing and be heard, or I could see her playing oboe/flute because she wants to hang out with the usually predominantly female woodwinds section

Rush: He doesn't believe in organized activities and sneers at everyone else when they're on their way to practice, but he also secretly learns the violin and shows up at the concert when the soloist can't make it at the last minute and plays the flute solo on his violin and everyone is amazed that it actually sounds really good.

*In my high school no one marched a double reed instrument. I dunno how universal that is. (Also we didn't have an orchestra, so I didn't really consider string instruments for most of this.)

This is very much my personal opinions and experiences regarding what i remember of being in band 20 years ago, so please share your own thoughts anyone who has them! for context, i played clarinet lol

IM BACK FROM MY BAND THING IT WAS LONGER THAN I THOUGHT BUT IT WAS SO AWESOME GUIDSHGJFDG i need to list every good thing that happened this will be long ok so first of all it was this thing at a college here. and i went in and the band im in played a song for some of the college band students and it went really well. and then their director gives us this acompaniment for a jazz song theyre gonna play (theyre a jazz band) so we go into sectionals (which is not like sectional sectional it was just wood winds, brass, percussion) and i go to the sectionals and the two leading it are this alto sax player and this tenor sax player and we introduce ourselves and we get asked what song we really like right now and im like its really hard for me to say but i really like will wood and bear ghost. AND THEN THE FUCKING ALTO PLAYER ALSO LIKES WILL WOOD AND BEAR GHOST. so after we practice we get a snack break and me and then start talking about it its so fucking cool. and their friend comes over and HE LIKES CHOPIN AND PAGANINI LIKE ME??? SO I GET TO AUTISM OUT TALKING ABOUT THAT AND OTHER COMPOSERS I LIKE. and its actually insane how much we had in common regarding music taste. we both liked deftones, slipknot, bear ghost, will wood, jack stauber, lemon demon, jhariah, and probably some others i forgot. WHICH WAS SO AWESOME!!!!! and its like i almost NEVER get to rant to people irl about the things i like but they listened so well and it was so fucking cool!!! and like ive literally met no one else irl that likes the same music i do. that gets over and we practice another song with them and it goes really well and it sounds amazing. and then they practice their stuff but i told them about how i used to play tenor sax in jazz band so i to sit next to tenor guy and i read off his parts (tenor sax and clarinet are in the same key) and its so fucking AWESOME!! AND THE SONGS SOUNDED AMAZING!!!! AND IT MADE ME REALIZE HOW MUCH I MISS BEING IN A JAZZ BAND. so after that the parents come back and we perform our song and they perform their songs and its just!!! AHHH!!!! IT WAS SO FUCKING COOL IM SO HAPPY!!!!!!! I CANT EXPLAIN HOW AWESOME IT WAS!!! my brain is already getting me to overthink a bit about it trying to ruin my fun but NO!! SHUT UP BRAIN. IT WAS FUCKING AMAZING AND IM AMAZING AND THEY'RE AMAZING AND EVERYTHING IS AMAZING. I LOVED IT SO SO MUCH. I LOVE MUSIC AND BEING IN BAND AND I LOVE CREATING MUSIC AND PLAYING MUSIC AND TALKING ABOUT MUSIC. BECAUSE MUSIC IS FUCKING AWESOME.

For the record, I played trumpet. Yes it shows. Moving on.

Like, yes. Second Chair Trumpet Syndrome is real and destroying that kid. They really truly believe that they deserve to be first chair and they're gonna be a petulant and mean grump randomly and indefinitely because of it. This immediately changes as soon as they change chair. They could literally drop to like 5th chair and it would result in a major personality fix.

did I hate that girl playing first oboe in my senior band.

I did not play oboe, nor flute or clarinet.

but god I hated her.

like, i get that the choir teacher likes you and you're very involved with that and you're doing all the theater and singing extra curriculars. No, I know that you were not offered the lead but graciously turned it down in the musical this year because I KNOW FOR A FACT that you sing alto, not soprano like either female lead part.

It's not like she had an oboe solo in this really cool as hell piece we're playing in band and will perform twice (once at a competition and once for family and community). It's not like she CROAKED both times.

It's been TEN years and I. STILL. HATE. HER. SO. MUCH.

I don't even know if she ever knew.
