mizuki is a flautist because i'm a flautist and i project my instrument onto any and every possible character i can

ena finds out and she's like "oh wow that's cool can you play anything on it" and sits right next to mizuki and proceeds to get whacked in the head with the flute as they start to play hot cross buns

i could project my flautist ways on most of the cast except for a few exceptions, in which i think they'd play different instruments

ena - clarinet

akito - either the alto sax or the trombone. leaning trombone though

tsukasa - trumpet. loud. he'd probably also do colorguard though because Big Flags

kohane - oboe

airi - also trumpet

rui - he's a flautist yeah. but specifically for the low ones like this.

no one knows where on earth he bought it from or how he convinced the band director to let him play it but he did and now he's going to make it everyone's problem

Instruments I think BSD characters would play !! (ft. the ADA and the PM!)

Atsushi - Flute. Guy flute energy radiates off of him at Chernobyl levels.

Dazai - Piano, but he could probably play any instrument if he tried hard enough.

Ranpo - Alto Sax, but only because he likes using flavoured reeds.

Kunikida - Basson. A percentage of his salary goes to buying reeds.

Yosano - Oboe. Tried repairing the chips in her reed with her ability (didn’t work).

Mori - Mainly conducts, but also knows how to play piano + other string instruments.

Hirotsu - Tuba, but had to switch to percussion because he doesn’t have enough lung capacity.

Kajii - Tenor Sax. Whenever he makes a mistake he says it’s just “jazz”.

edward nashton is tough. genuinely. most math/science people i know don’t have a musical/artistic bone in their body but i’m gonna play it safe with bass clarinet OR trombone . seems like a trombone guy to me

alternatively, they give up on him and put him with the vocalists cuz he can sing (he hates it)

barry/alex is one hundred percent going ham on the glockenspiel i’m not explaining myself you’re gonna have to trust me.

also i feel like if he could get the hang of it, he’d enjoy the flute

timothy klitz 100% plays trumpet and is bad at it. terribly. only picked it up cuz he saw 3 valves and thought it was the easiest one. can only barely read sheet music

jay (okja) IS a clarinet. the embodiment of. there’s a certain kind of elegance to a clarinet that isn’t the same elegance of a violin or piano and i feel like he’s that

eli sunday can’t read sheet music. he can’t make a sound for any woodwind or brass instrument. by default he’s a vocalist i can’t explain it but i KNOW he’s got a nice set of pipes

alternatively, i see him taking interest in the cello

dwayne hoover is definitely on bass guitar or he’s a percussionist . just look at him how could he not be. plus he thinks the bass makes him look cool. really wants to try french horn though

Band Kid Ramblings

because it is the end of the school year and thus so many bands things have happened in the past two months and also I am very tired and when I am tired I rambles

We got first place in a competition! That was fun. Previously our band has never gotten gold/first place (at least out of recent memory).

Then we got to go visit multiple museums and that was amazing (And Dave & Busters, food bad, DDR is the best).

And then they put so many neurodivergent overstimulated kids on a cruise. Probably not their best idea to be fair. Got some great photos of the city-line at night tho!

Also jazz band season ended which is sad. My jazz band was more like a jazz combo, as I quote, "We have one trumpet, his name is [Bob], and he plays clarinet."

Our pieces were really fun! I played melody the entire time during Girl From Ipanema (on flute), other than when our vibraphone player was playing. I hate the rhythm but once you hear the song in your head it is a okay.

Marching band season is here again as well! More so we had our two days of preseason and then we start up again in August with a band camp that I'm arriving two days late for, jet-lagged and sounding vaguely Scottish.

The Matador themed show this year has amazing music. I love Spanish style marches and now being a brass playing in the marching band (I joined mello this year) heightens that with cool melody bits.

However, I am the only mello. (the only other mello got moved to baritone because the other two baritones are a - Drum Major 1, and b - a guy who has only played cello before) And with this I don't know if I'm going to be grouped with the altos or the trumpets. Not even my band directors or the people who wrote the music know. I've even written in my music when I'm a Trumpet or an Alto Saxophone.

what kind of music do YOU listen to

I’ve kind of realized that i’m mildly picky about what I listen to? Either that or it’s just bc I am extremely dependent on what kind of vibes I’m in the mood for + if whatever song fits said vibe

According to spotify my top genre was broadway, which I don’t completely agree with bc I have a friend who would 100% say ‘no you loser you aren’t that into broadway’ but also she’s just into show tunes way more than anything else. Ig it’s a vibes thing more than an actual ‘this has been shown on broadway’

Though I do love musicals, i’m kind of basic since I’ve only ‘watched’ hamilton (disney+ version when it was turned into a movie). But i’ve listened to some of the more popular songs from Dear Evan Hanson, Heathers, Be More Chill, Legally Blonde, and others that are just popular songs. A few years ago I watched a TON of animatics so I think that’s kind of where it came from.

Another thing that’s not as vibe specific is orchestra/band stuff. I love love LOVE when a live orchestra and/or wind ensemble gets incorporated into music. Cody Fry was my top artist this year, and basically all his songs have an orchestra in it minus his older albums and ITS SO COOL. I play clarinet (and bass clarinet) so that’s where that appreciation comes from. I also just like, wind ensemble music. Gustav Holst (second suite in f major) is a piece I played last year and I absolute fell in love with it. Samuel Hazo is also a super good composer and he has a gigantic roster. I played two pieces of his last year, ‘Arabesque’ and ‘Solas Annes (Yesterday’s Joy)’ Going back to Holst I can 100% appreciate his planets suite.

For that kind of music though, it helps if i’ve played the piece cause then I’m like ‘hehe I know this and THIS SPOT WAS SUPER HARD ARGHHHH’ but music is super fun.

OH ALSO I’m a choir kid (basically just a fine arts kid in general) so i’ve listened to some choral pieces too just cause I like how they were performed and I like how they sound. I’m a band kid first and foremost though.

Also I listen to a lot of game soundtracks, bc instrumentals are just peak, and they vibe pretty easy since I mostly listen to soundtracks that i’ve played before. (Minecraft, Omori, Stardew Valley, Breath of the Wild, Undertale, Deltarune, etc)

I have a dead one on my desk from a fair thingy that I totally need to throw away, and I have one in the freezer that was a gift from a fellow cast member of a play I was in. I have a list of instruments I want/want to learn. I used to play violin but I don't anymore bc we returned the violin and I would like to pick it up again. I'd also like to learn viola because it looks cool but apparently they have an entire different fucking clef?? called an alto clef??? like wtf why would they do that to me

I'd also like to learn saxophone. Either soprano, alto, or tenor, idrc. But it's a cool instrument. Id also like to play bass clarinet because it is literally the same as normal clarinet just Big. it's in the treble clef and everything. It's just Big clarinet. I would love to learn guitar. it seems like such an important piece for like background music on tracks and just. I wanna learn it. and its the most common thing that people use for chords. I have a piano that I fuck around with, but I don't know how to use chords and shit but I know how to play the shit out of the melody.

I also need to learn to read the bass clef. I played flute in 4th grade and I'd kind of like to play it again

The blue is rly nice, but if I moved, I think I'd paint three walls light lavender, and one the marshmallow white.

Band kid me was actually very cool she got pretty good at b flat clarinet, then contra alto clarinet (badass instrument), then bass clarinet, she went to concert band camp two years and made herself in charge of ordering custom varsity style band shirts for us all. (just the ones I have thought about)

gregory plays clarinet + musical theater. he prefers musical theater but also just likes doing plays. as you may expect, he practices incessantly and as a result is the best in his band class, (which may have also had something to do with his prior musical experience at yardale.) whenever there is a solo to be gotten, the teacher makes it out to be a huge surprise whenever they select the soloist, but nobody is ever surprised and likely groan when gregory is selected.

wendy plays clarinet too, also playing it quite well, although not as excessively as gregory does. same with musical theater. she’s fairly good at singing in the sense of being in key nearly all the time, and having a strong voice, and competent on stage. she has a lot of interest in common with gregory in the music field, hence their friendship. (I’ve had an idea floating around in my brain of wendy auditioning for belle and grwgory gaston in beauty and the beast xDD) shes also one of the best in the band room and practices frequently.

christophe likely would never want to do any kind of musical anything on his own, although gregory would convince him to join band eventually. he would either join clarinet with gregory, or bassoon. he isn’t particularly good, but not completely lost. he’s maybe at the upper lower end of the”where he needs to be” in band class. I think that grwgory would slowly convince him to join musical theater with him,, but christophe being christophe he would never act on stage, so he would opt for backstage crew.

as for pip, he plays flute and sings in choir. he isn’t amazing at flute, but he’s overall pretty solid. I think he would just be absolutely overjoyed by being able to play that he doesn’t even care if he isn’t very good. he just genuinely likes to play flute, which is why he practices quite frequently. (although not very effectively.) same applies for choir, he just genuinely enjoys singing even though he isn’t THAT good at it. like he isnt bad at it, but his singing isn’t what you would call good either. little fella just having the time of his life in there:DD

i honestly think that estella probably wouldn’t do anything musical at all, but if she did it would be cello. she just seems like a cello kind of person idk. she can play it pretty up to speed. like not incredible but like to the point where she can get irritated whenever people are struggling real bad, which is very common in their orchestra class. she has like six packs on her eyeballs from rolling her eyes at this point. (i feel like all the strings would also be atrocious)

damien would go with alto sax (the one i play :D) or viola. he would also do piano but most schools don’t have piano :’) (atleast mine doesn’t.) his dad wanted him to have some form of extracurriculars but he is too antisocial for sports so his dad insisted on an instrument. whenever guests come over damien is hoping and praying that his dad doesn’t remember he can play an instrument :’) (“did you know that damien is learning an instrument at school? oh my gosh!! he’s gotten so good!!! damien, you should play something for them!!” “*whisper yelling after damien refuses* damien! show our guests your skills!”)

rebecca would do piano, (if it’s available) or violin. she already took violin lessons so she chose that one so she was less lost when she joined mid way through the year. (not that she couldn’t learn it in her own really fadt, bc she totally could, but she has social anxiety.) in the off chance that her parents make her try something new, she would play oboe. Idk her personality js seems like an oboe idk how to describe it :’) she would be really good at it and one of the better players in the room.

mark would also opt for piano if the school offers it, but if not he would go for the French horn because he thinks it’s cool. also he really likes the way it looks, and also he didn’t want to do one of the instruments he already knew because that’s boring. he would get up to speed pretty fast and end up one of the best in the french horn section, which pisses a lot of people off who couldn’t even get that good in the time before mark& rebecca came to the school.

so like these are just the characters who i rlly thought about whenever the hell i came up with the musical idea,, so I might make more. js lmk if you want any particular character/ hc or anything abt the characters in music

What instrument the crew of Destiny played in high school band, based on vibes:

Scott: trumpet bc it's loud. and like a “normal” mainstream instrument? I would also accept clarinet, bc it's straight also a boring instrument.

Young: Saxophone bc he thinks it's cool. I would also accept French horn bc I do get a brass vibe from him and he's just gotta be that guy whose music is written in a completely different key.

Brody: Flute/piccolo. He's first chair, takes it seriously, and likes making music that sounds good.

Park: In concert band she's first chair bassoon, bc a single reed instrument wasn't interesting enough, and for marching band* she's pit- she's one of those people with a double set of mallets in each hand absolutely rocking the marimba.

Telford: trombone. If he accidentally hits you in the face with this large mobile instrument it's bc you got in his way.

Greer: tuba/sousaphone. You will not forget he is here and if you don't get out of his way he will run you over. Also if you fuck with the woodwinds he will run you over.

Chloe: Clarinet bc it's a middle kind of instrument, and it would theoretically be easy to switch to sax or oboe if she wants and i feel like that option without commitment fits her. She secretly really enjoys playing the bass clarinet but only offers if the director suggests they need someone to do it. Marching season she's in the color guard.

Eli: percussion/pit. Percussion is about switching between several different instruments and paying attention to a lot of different things, and also being in the back of the band and playing computer games when no one is looking.

Spencer: drumline, quad tenors. He spends concert season practicing for drumline.

Volker: Tenor saxophone. He will correct you if you say he plays "the saxophone" to clarify it's "tenor sax" and he takes a lot of pleasure in explaining the differences between alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone.

James: Oboe but marches clarinet* and wouldn't be caught dead in color guard. She's very good but doesn't sit better than third chair.

Varro: trumpet, but in a good way. He plays in the jazz band too.

TJ: Flute, marches color guard. (I dunno, I don't get strong vibes for her other than "band mom.")

Camile: euphonium because she's rebellious/wants to do her own thing and be heard, or I could see her playing oboe/flute because she wants to hang out with the usually predominantly female woodwinds section

Rush: He doesn't believe in organized activities and sneers at everyone else when they're on their way to practice, but he also secretly learns the violin and shows up at the concert when the soloist can't make it at the last minute and plays the flute solo on his violin and everyone is amazed that it actually sounds really good.

*In my high school no one marched a double reed instrument. I dunno how universal that is. (Also we didn't have an orchestra, so I didn't really consider string instruments for most of this.)

This is very much my personal opinions and experiences regarding what i remember of being in band 20 years ago, so please share your own thoughts anyone who has them! for context, i played clarinet lol

IM BACK FROM MY BAND THING IT WAS LONGER THAN I THOUGHT BUT IT WAS SO AWESOME GUIDSHGJFDG i need to list every good thing that happened this will be long ok so first of all it was this thing at a college here. and i went in and the band im in played a song for some of the college band students and it went really well. and then their director gives us this acompaniment for a jazz song theyre gonna play (theyre a jazz band) so we go into sectionals (which is not like sectional sectional it was just wood winds, brass, percussion) and i go to the sectionals and the two leading it are this alto sax player and this tenor sax player and we introduce ourselves and we get asked what song we really like right now and im like its really hard for me to say but i really like will wood and bear ghost. AND THEN THE FUCKING ALTO PLAYER ALSO LIKES WILL WOOD AND BEAR GHOST. so after we practice we get a snack break and me and then start talking about it its so fucking cool. and their friend comes over and HE LIKES CHOPIN AND PAGANINI LIKE ME??? SO I GET TO AUTISM OUT TALKING ABOUT THAT AND OTHER COMPOSERS I LIKE. and its actually insane how much we had in common regarding music taste. we both liked deftones, slipknot, bear ghost, will wood, jack stauber, lemon demon, jhariah, and probably some others i forgot. WHICH WAS SO AWESOME!!!!! and its like i almost NEVER get to rant to people irl about the things i like but they listened so well and it was so fucking cool!!! and like ive literally met no one else irl that likes the same music i do. that gets over and we practice another song with them and it goes really well and it sounds amazing. and then they practice their stuff but i told them about how i used to play tenor sax in jazz band so i to sit next to tenor guy and i read off his parts (tenor sax and clarinet are in the same key) and its so fucking AWESOME!! AND THE SONGS SOUNDED AMAZING!!!! AND IT MADE ME REALIZE HOW MUCH I MISS BEING IN A JAZZ BAND. so after that the parents come back and we perform our song and they perform their songs and its just!!! AHHH!!!! IT WAS SO FUCKING COOL IM SO HAPPY!!!!!!! I CANT EXPLAIN HOW AWESOME IT WAS!!! my brain is already getting me to overthink a bit about it trying to ruin my fun but NO!! SHUT UP BRAIN. IT WAS FUCKING AMAZING AND IM AMAZING AND THEY'RE AMAZING AND EVERYTHING IS AMAZING. I LOVED IT SO SO MUCH. I LOVE MUSIC AND BEING IN BAND AND I LOVE CREATING MUSIC AND PLAYING MUSIC AND TALKING ABOUT MUSIC. BECAUSE MUSIC IS FUCKING AWESOME.

The instrument you pick in band says things about your personality?? I was never in band so this is a foreign concept to me, explain!

And this is probably all satire but i’m fascinated and enjoying the discourse.

It absolutely says something (although it might be different in different bands but I’m going by my high school marching band)

Flute/piccolo: the calm kids, more laid back, a lot of which are very smart. They are frequently all girls. The flutes also normally have one super chaotic kid

Clarinet: they’re super chill. Not calm like flutes but not completely crazy. They definitely have dumbass energy but it’s a more casual dumbass energy then some of the other sections

Saxophone (alto and tenor): chaotic dumbass. Like half of them have a couple songs (normally a specific part of said song) that they are constantly playing and everyone is done with it. Can sometimes be a problem because they can get a bit distracted and miss stuff. Like half of them are neurodivergent. Then this last bit might just be the sax section from my school, but most of them are queer

Saxophone (baritone): can either be grouped in with the saxophones or they can be the types who are mostly just there to hang out and don’t care too much. If they have they’re own little thing they’re probably late a lot because they’ve realized there’s not much the teacher can do when there’s so few of them if they all act like that.

High brass (trumpet and mellophone): everyone in that section is either one of the most annoying crazy people or is extremely well behaved. There’s no in between

Low brass (trombone, baritone, and Tuba): basically a cult. They want to recruit more people to low brass. They are also constantly doing weird random stuff, like you’ll just see when of them standing in the water playing a trombone, or a line of them with their arms over each other’s shoulders chanting the abcs

Drumline: the ‘cool kids’ or at least think they are. They audition to be on drumline instead of automatically getting in the section so this reenforces that opinion. They’re fairly funny and mostly nice tho

Pit/front ensemble: a combo of the like two or three upper class men who are on bass guitar or the kid that stayed to be put section leader and the freshman and sometimes sophomores who didn’t make drumline

Drum majors: good leaders, well behaved, and some of the teachers favorites (but not the teachers pets people don’t really like)

Color guard: most of them have a superiority complex and think they’re better then the band kids (some are nice tho). They are mostly nice until you find out they do stuff like have a point system for who accidentally hit the most band members with flags. Normally have one or two guys who are probably gay

If Pokespe Characters Played Instruments

Going up to gen 5 characters cause I don't feel like typing much:

Red - Trumpet since I think he would like a loud and cheery-sounding instrument like that

Green - Baritone Sax, cause I think a snazzy and cool low-sounding instrument is just perfect for him

Blue - The clarinet just gives off those vibes for her, right? Like the popular cool girl vibes-- the popular cool girl who dresses cool, LOL

Yellow - This one was pretty hard for me, but I think the piccolo, because I didn't think a flute would be perfect for Yellow, and it's just a instrument that reminds me of nature, I guess... Like how Yellow grew up in the Viridian forest?

Gold: The drums, I guess. Probably because the drums can be very loud instruments, and I imagine Gold will be fine just hitting two sticks on a thing, you know?

Silver: This was also hard, cause I don't even imagine him playing an instrument Let's just go with the alto saxophone CAUSE WHY NOT--

Crystal: I think she'll play the flute, since she seems like the very minimalistic sophisticated type of girl

Ruby: Clarinet as well... It just gives off those vibes, you know?

Sapphire: Trumpet seems like it will fit her well! I don't actually think she'll use the drums just cause she'll get annoyed by Gold. (I'm kidding, it just doesn't feel right to put her on the drums)

Emerald: I'd imagine Rald to be the top-tier trombone player in the class. I love short people who play the trombone, LOL

Diamond: I think he'd play the flute! (yes, I'm just straight-up saying that with no reason)

Pearl: He'd be the saxophone player who'd always just play meme songs (Alto or tenor sax idc)

Platinum: I was having trouble deciding if she would play the violin or flute, so I'll just leave it up to you to choose for yourself which she would fit better.

Black: You guessed it-- the drums. Like how can I not put a loud child that screams a lot on the drums?

White: I think she'd play the marimba, actually... I just think it suits her.

I really wanted to add a few more instruments (ex: oboe, viola, many other types of guitars...) but I didn't so sorry about that! ...Maybe I would have done that if I made this for all the characters. I don't know.

What Instruments I Think HTTYD Books Characters Would Play

This is all light hearted so please don't take it too seriously! Also, I can only play flute and bassoon so I'm really only going on the general vibe of the characters rather than what they might actually be best at lol Also this is only the younger characters/the Berk boys + a few others. I didn't rattle off everyone xD These are just instruments I've had in previous high school and middle school bands. :') Only a couple strings, sorry!

Hiccup: Clarinet, he might be bullied into playing alto clarinet by the conductor though, for a couple of songs. (Which he would dislike but be too shy to ask to just play clarinet again!)

Camicazi: Baritone saxophone! I feel like she's absolutely rock the lower parts on pep band music.

Fishlegs: Viola. He seems like the sort of guy, can't explain why though,,,

Snotlout: TRUMPET. WAY TOO LOUD TRUMPET. He'd be the type of guy to come up behind you as you're packing up your instrument and play some really loud note right in your ear.

Dogsbreath: He'd play trumpet too, joined the same section as his best friend at the beginning of it all and stuck through! Snotlout would be first chair and he would be last, but they'd still be besties.

Wartihog: French horn, if I do say so myself. I think he'd have a really crisp, nice sound. The sort of playing that would make even the harshest director happy.

Thugory: Bassoon! I am biased but I think it would be really cool if he could play bassoon. Just imagine him, knocking over the cup for his reeds. Classic!

Speedifist: Trombone, just feels like the right idea. I think because he only spoke a few times, but when he did he reminded me of trombonists in my band? Anyway, he'd slay.

Tuffnut Jr.: Alto saxophone, and Speedifist and him would chat the entire rehearsal. (After all, Speedifist would sit behind him!)

Bearcub: He'd be a really good second clarinet, I think. He has the energy to him.

Clueless: Clueless would be the type of percussionist who never brings their music. Or their folder. Or their sticks.

Tantrum: Flute. No doubt about it. She just... is the flute stereotype (as much as I hate to say it lol). I feel like she'd get super annoyed whenever her instrument was out of tune and totally rule the upper octave!

Bonus, the Dragons humanized:

Toothless: Alto saxophone! Another really loud musician, I'd bet!

Fireworm: Flute! I feel like she'd hate it though, and be constantly complaing that she didn't choose alto sax, saying it's easy just to insult Toothless!!

Horrorcow: String bass. She's look so cool playing it in the back. :D

Stormfly: Oboe, and she'd be constantly out of tune! Queen.
