The ancient wizards basic guide to magic:

Let me tell you about my way of doing magic. Obviously, there are many kinds of magic, but this one is the one I fell in love with and follow to this day, it's beautiful in it's simplicity and usability, yet it has tangible power that is not just clouds that can be blown away by a weak gust of wind. I believe if you don't truly and with conviction love and understand your current magic, you should use this.

But why listen to me?

Well I was born about seven aeons ago. I am not some immortal demigod or strange creature, I'm a regular human, I have lived through all those years through my magic. I have explored many fields during this time but my main one has always been combat, I love combat, I have defeated many people in my time but the most notable one was the ninth aeons incarnation of the destruction and maybe the wizard Golrieaä, a powerful man with a pretty cool beard. My magic allows for infinite expression in a simplicity that can't be beat without being a cotton ball philosophy.

Magic:

Before I explain my way of casting magic, I must explain what it is in my interpretation, magic is a simple force that flows all over the world, pretty evenly actually, it seems to flow independently of our physical reality and can not simply be detected or accessed through physical means. The nature of magic in further details is quite complex, it can affect physical reality in an unmeasured amount of ways, if there is a "place" where magic usually is is debatable and since my model is MY model, there are few researchers attempting to understand it, they love getting lost in their complex interpretations with their elements and their "Truths theory" or whatever they do nowadays, so the nature of the flow is undefined, but you don't need that info in the beginning and later on you'll get a feel for it.

Practice:

My magic almost always consists of three elements: a pattern, a vessel, and a friction.

The pattern is the least intuitive, so let's start with that: Patterns are as the name suggests, patterns we use for practicing magic, they come in many forms, drawings, noises, movements, patterns are the bridge of the system, they are etchings in our physical world that the flow of magic gets stuck in and starts flowing accordingly to, creating little whirls and hops and, through this following of specific patterns "activates" and does, if executed well, whatever we want,

usually patterns require a few elements:

The Capturer:

A pattern that catches the magic and directs it to make it usable for the rest of the pattern. The capturer works by imitating the nature of magic and thus changing it's flow despite being physical, this is pretty complicated and you'll probably just copy and existing one in the beginning.

The Main Flow:

This part conveys the intention, the magic is now usually in a state I like to call miasma and can simply be shaped by a pattern, if you want a fire, you convey a fire. This is where the actual tinkering comes in, it's all very specific to your way of doing things.

The Exit:

You must always add an exit for the miasma back into the flow of magic, else things tend to break and you don't want that, yet again: probably copy paste this if you're not sure what you're doing.

Vessels:

The vessel is comparatively simple, it is your patterns medium, if your pattern is a song, your vessel is that sound, if your patterns are drawn onto a rock, that rock and the paint you used are the vessel and so on.

Frictions:

Frictions are another more abstract idea but easy to get. Simply put: magic doesn't want to do the work, you bend it's movements to your will and create magical constructs, but magic, once out of the flow, doesn't move on it's own anymore, without a friction the miasma would just float around inside your main flow, where it's meant to rush through. A friction is an unnatural state, something that required effort to become the way it is. But you can't just choose anything since it needs to be applied directly to your pattern, specifically to a part of the capturer called the accelerator, the capturer almost always turns the magic into miasma, the properties of which include, being acceleratable, meaning, if you apply friction to the accelerator pattern while miasma is inside it will be accelerated in a desired way. The manner of applying is obviously dependent on the kind of magic you do, but it could mean, killing a goat on a pattern or heating it with a fire you made, singing is the best in this since it only happens in one moment and embodies all parts of your magic, the more effortfully you sing, the stronger your magic is. This obviously leaves many opportunities, but keep in mind, your pattern can only endure some level of miasma speed, be wise.

I can still remember, I was so young, learning the ways of magic in the wizard academy and later from my master, I hated the academy, I did not understand any laws, it didn't make sense, the professors were lost in strange knowledge mazes they had built themselves, my master, Goop the kind, well his idea of teaching was much more liberal, instead of drilling strange concepts and movements and formulas into my head, he let me explore, run wild and invent, and this approach is what I believe led to my success as a wizard. The close minded people from the academy "did magic" but they didn't understand, it, feel it, love it. And so I simply strolled with joy while they worked. And we got the same results, until I realized I could do so much more, but that's a story for another time. Point is:

I hope this will help a young lost apprentice, like I once was, to find their own way or maybe even use mine.
