Woman using bike ramp Golden Gate Bridge pedestrian and bike walkway 20150515-154155 C4 by Charlie & Melody Wambeke Via Flickr: This is an image capture of a woman using the ramp to walk her bike up the west stairs of the pedestrian walkway under the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge. As seen in other photos in this short series, the wooden stairs are well worn by all the foot traffic over the years. The area below the six lane roadway of the Golden Gate Bridge is noisy, with the clanking of the cars driving over metal dividers in the roadway above. It is a great place to see the superstructure of the bridge up close but a place where one does not tend to linger. You can see other views of this stairway in the next two slides. As usual in 2015, this image captured with Canon Powershot SX50 point and shoot camera.

In some countries, it is allowed to live on a boat. These house boats are called "houseboats," and they are quite a bit different from our more conventional housedirts. For instance, there is an internal-combustion engine in the basement. Wait, that's not different from my place at all.
For as long as I could remember, I've always wanted to at least sleep on a houseboat. In my country, we have lots of water, but none of it is in the province where I live, which is a flat hellscape devoid of all features except for white supremacy and a guy who incessantly honks whenever a hockey team scores a goal. It's not clear where his allegiances lie, but that is not the point of this story. The point is: I wanted a houseboat. So I snuck onto the airport runway and hid in the landing gear bay of a 747, hoping that it would take me somewhere that boats are also very mildewy-smelling houses.
As I rode there, alternately taking huffs of oxygen to stay alive, and glugs of off-brand Sichuan-knockoff not-Huy-Fung to stay warm, I thought about the downsides of the floating home lifestyle. For one thing, you'd be constantly trying to deal with leaks, and those leaks are quite a bit more serious than "spray Flex Seal on it and stop thinking about it" in a conventional home. My mind wandered a bit as the oxygen started to deplete, and then it struck me. I realized to no small amount of horror that the problem with houseboats is that there's no garage. If you want to park your car at your house, you simply can't.
This disgusting, deviant lifestyle had lured me across the world, all for nothing. Things kept getting worse for houseboats the longer I thought about it. If there was no lawn, I couldn't park a car on the lawn. If I couldn't park a car on the lawn, I couldn't park forty cars on the lawn. What would even be the point of living?
It all worked out in the end, because once the plane landed, I got to spend some time in Dutch prison before my deportation. Besides being prettier and better appointed than my actual home, it was also a houseboat. Well, prisonboat. I got a chance to try out this new, interesting way of living, and I didn't have to give up even a single shitty car to do it. Plus, one of my fellow prisoners explained to me that you can park a whole lot of bicycles in a houseboat. He was arrested for trying to ramp a BMX off of the forehead of a police officer while demanding the government turn a major highway into a bike racetrack. I think we might be related.

Huh? Nah, this doesn't need safety gear
It is horrifying what kinds of deadly activities Humans will engage with without even a mention of safety or precaution. Most alarmingly what their offspring dare to do.
Take, for example, cycling. Already, a vehicle that is literally as minimal in features as you can get, and requires the user to provide all balance. Lacking such an advanced inner ear, operating this device is nigh impossible for two thirds of the Galaxy. But their young manage to get the hang of it very quickly, and we're told it's a skill that once you learn it, you never forget. Even after decades, their "body remembers", which adds another layer of curiosity to how Human "muscle memory" functions and retains this other form of knowledge.
Once their children learn this skill, any skill really, they tend to experiment and go as far as they can with it. One time we saw a whole group of them riding around their school's outdoor gym field at nearly 35 km/h on the straights. I and several other delegates would quite literally die if one were to crash into us. And crash they did, we were shocked and panicked, but before we could alert anyone, the child simply brushed themselves off, stretched a little, spent MORE time in fact checking if their bike was fine, and then got right back on. Seemingly zero lessons learned as they crashed two more times within the next half hour.
As we left, a group of slightly older children on somewhat smaller but tougher looking bicycles with steel protrusions from the wheels. They seemed very energetic, so we followed them at a distance to a large open concrete park with strange geometric structures all around. Before we could question the purpose of this place, the kids were flying, their bikes were screeching, and we were terrified. Jumping off ramps and these half-cylinders, doing frankly impossible feats of acrobatics.
OH MY GOD ONE OF THEM LET GO OF THE BIKE MID JUMP!!!
Oh thank god, they caught it again before landing.
Why did they spin around before doing so though?
...
Stunts?
You... willfully endanger yourselves for... "s t y l e p o i n t s"
My hearts can't take it anymore today, please take me home.

✧˖° — this is a story not one shot.
Jay followed my instructions, his movements more fluid this time. "Like this?" he asked, glancing at me for confirmation.
"Exactly," I said, smiling. "You're getting it."
For a moment, we were both silent, just standing there, him on his bike and me beside him. The tension from earlier seemed to melt away, replaced by a comfortable understanding.
"Thanks for the tip," Jay said, breaking the silence again.
"You're welcome," I replied, feeling a bit more at ease. "Just remember to keep your elbows wide and your grip firm. It'll help you stay balanced."
Jay nodded.
As we rejoined the rest of the group, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. Interacting with Jay had been nerve-wracking, but it also felt surprisingly natural. Maybe joining their crew wouldn't be so bad after all.
I bit my lower lip as I realized June, Dom, Minu, Yuna, and Mia had been watching us the entire time. I felt so embarrassed! They must have been surprised, especially after our training where we warmed up with a 180km bike ride from the city to the countryside. It was exhausting, but I enjoyed it with them.
After our training, I noticed Jay practicing the tips I gave him, so I went over to help. But I didn’t expect the rest of the crew to be watching us!
"Wow, you're getting close to the foreigner. How come you always attract foreign girls?" June laughed, crossing his arms. Jay ignored him, continuing to drink his water.
"Damn, good thing Demitra can speak Korean. That blue-haired girl, I couldn’t understand a word she said!" Dom complained while wiping his sweat.
Blue-haired girl? That sounds familiar.
"You know her too?" Jay asked quietly from beside me, though I knew his friends were listening.
"Nah, I don't think so," I forced a smile. He looked at me for a long moment, as if trying to gauge the truth.
Minu cleared his throat. "We noticed you were teaching Jay. It seems you know a lot of biking skills?" he asked. Mia nodded in agreement.
I looked down at my bike, balancing without holding the handlebars. "Just a few," I said. Dom gave me a doubtful look. "I used to love doing tricks on ramps." I added.
"You're talking about the ramps at the skatepark?" June asked, eyes wide with shock.
I rubbed the back of my head, feeling embarrassed. "Yeah, that's my specialty."
Mia's jaw dropped. "If I'm not mistaken, are you one of those bicycle riders who do tricks in the air? Like spinning around?" she asked, stunned. I nodded.
"That's dangerous, right?" Dom asked June, who nodded in disbelief while looking at me.
"But of course, I don't use those in tournaments. Actually, I don't do those tricks much anymore. I'm more into sprint riding, like what Dom does," I explained, looking at Dom. Jay adjusted his posture, clearly interested.
"You also know some techniques for sprint riding?" Jay asked, and everyone looked at him. I laughed softly.
"Maybe a little?"
"You're just being humble," Yuna gave me a sharp look.
"Isn't it unfair that you’re teaching Jay but not us?" Dom said dramatically. Jay avoided his gaze and got on his bike.
"Well, I would love to help you—"
"It's too late. We need to go home now," Jay interrupted, making me widen my eyes.
"What!? Oh come on, man! Don't be so selfish!"
"What do you mean 'we'? Are you taking Demitra with you?" Minu clarified, locking eyes with Jay as if they were having a silent conversation.
I remembered our last conversation before the training session. Jay had offered to help me with my Korean literature studies. I even asked him where we’d study since it wasn't allowed at my place! Plus, I've never brought a guy to my apartment; my roommates might assume Jay is my boyfriend. How embarrassing would that be? Thankfully, he volunteered his place since he’s not allowed to stay out late either.
"He’s going to help me with Korean literature and history." I interjected into their conversation.
Mia chuckled. "You seem to learn quickly, judging by how well you speak Korean! I know you can do it."
"Just the two of you?" Minu asked Jay seriously. Jay looked at him without any emotion, but I could feel a strange tension.
"It won’t take long! Don’t worry!" I quickly added.
"Well, good luck, Demitra! Jay isn't the best teacher, you might give up halfway!" Dom laughed.
I noticed Jay had already started biking, so I hurriedly got on my bike and waved at everyone. "See you tomorrow!" I called out cheerfully before following Jay, who was ahead of me. I pouted. Why was he in such a hurry?
I followed Jay because I didn't know where his house was. He was quiet, but I guess that’s normal for him. I couldn’t believe Shelly liked this type of guy. It was very unusual for her.
I was deep in thought when we arrived at a large house. My jaw dropped in shock at how big his house was. Was this where he lived? Wow, he must be rich.
"Just park your bike here," he said, snapping me out of my thoughts. I nodded and did as he said, parking my bike next to his.
Without another word, he walked inside. I bit my lip nervously. Was he not going to invite me in? It felt awkward just walking in unannounced. What if his parents were inside?
I was startled when Jay came back. "What are you still standing there for? Come in," he said before turning away. I pouted.
"Who’s with you, Jay?" I was surprised to see a small boy wearing glasses. He seemed just as surprised to see me, his cheeks turning red. "W-Who..."
"Turn off the TV if you’re not watching," Jay told him. He went into what I assumed was his room, leaving the door open. Was that where we’d study?
"It's nice to meet you, Jay's brother. Hi! I'm Demitra!" I introduced myself, holding out my hand. Jay’s brother just stared at me, his face red. I frowned and forced a smile.
It was so awkward because Jay's brother didn't say a word. He was just staring at me like he was looking through my soul. I forced a smile. "I'll head in now," I said awkwardly before walking into Jay's room.
"Your brother is weird," I said to Jay, setting my bag on the table. I watched as Jay organized his things.
He didn’t respond, instead handing me three books, one of which was a dictionary. I frowned at the books.
"What is this?"
"A dictionary," he said, as if stating the obvious.
"Yes, I know it's a dictionary. What's it for?" I raised an eyebrow. "I’m struggling more with Korean literature and history than the language itself."
His expression didn’t change. "Your Korean isn’t that good," he stated. My jaw dropped. "Maybe that’s why you can't understand our lessons about history."
"Hey, take that back! You understand what I’m saying! Even your friends!"
He shook his head. "It’s lame. I can barely understand you."
I dramatically held my chest. "Whatever, no offense, but Japanese is easier to learn than Korean."
"I agree."
I couldn’t believe this guy! I let out a sharp breath before sitting down. The contents of the books were overwhelming. This was harder than physics. Why did I end up in Korea? I glanced at Jay, who was staring at his phone.
"Are you going to teach me or not?" I raised an eyebrow at him. He looked at me boredly.
"Read that first."
"How can I read it if I don’t understand it?" I said sarcastically.
He stared at me for a moment before sighing and putting his phone down. He took the dictionary from my hands and replaced it with a larger book.
"Start with the basics," he said. When I opened the book, my jaw dropped. It was the Korean alphabet!
"Oh, come on, I already know some of these."
"Some? Then you should know all of these," he said, placing the book on the table. I cursed inwardly.
"Now I understand why Dom said you’re a terrible teacher," I grumbled, starting to read. As usual, he didn’t respond.
"How did you get a girlfriend when you’re this quiet?" I muttered while reading. "Huh?" I glared at him.
"It’s none of your business."
I rolled my eyes. "I heard you’re a player. How come Shelly doesn’t get jealous?" I teased without looking at him.
"Those are just rumors."
I laughed softly and continued reading. I glanced at Jay, who was now looking at his phone. Without his glasses, I realized how handsome he was. His mullet haircut suited him. No wonder many girls liked him.
Besides being handsome, he was good at biking and wasn’t very talkative. Some girls might prefer a quiet guy as a boyfriend, thinking there’s less chance he’d cheat because he’s so reserved.
My heart almost stopped when he looked up, and our eyes met.
"If you keep staring at me, you should just go home."
I rolled my eyes at him. "Is this how you treat girls? So rude," I muttered. "I was just about to ask you something about what I’m reading, but never mind."
He cleared his throat. "Show me. Where are you having trouble?" He must have heard my muttering.
"Forget it. I just remembered the internet exists. I’ll search for the meaning," I said, grabbing my phone.
He was silent for a moment.
"That’s a consonant. It refers to a double s," he suddenly said. My eyes widened when I realized how close our faces were. He had leaned in to look at the book. I could literally feel my heart racing. I was still distracted by how close our faces were to each other, so I didn't even notice what I had searched on my phone.
"Too late, I already looked it up," I whispered.
"You shouldn’t use your phone while studying."
"Well, genius, if you were a better teacher, I wouldn’t need to."
I continued reading, trying to push away my distraction. I couldn't help but feel Jay's gaze on me, and the thought of our eyes meeting again made me too embarrassed to look up. Is this what it's like when you like someone? I sighed and tried to focus on what I was reading.
As I went through the Korean alphabet, it felt more familiar, like I was revisiting what I had studied before deciding to come to Korea. It refreshed my memory. Maybe the reason I struggled with Korean history was that I had forgotten the correct way to read their language.
"Vinny..." My forehead creased at the name. "You know him? You’re friends with the Sabbath?" Jay suddenly asked.
And now I was doomed.
"No, I'm not, especially Vinny. He hates me."
He paused, clearly puzzled. "But he said you’re his friend."
"No, he’s just bluffing," I said with irritation.
"They are dangerous. You should stay away from them."
Well, it's too late. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't just walk away now. Wooin helped with my parents' debt. I can't just abandon him. Even though I'm confused about why he did it, I still choose to serve them.
"Are you saying your friend is dangerous?" I asked seriously.
Jay didn't respond, his expression unreadable. I know he is old friends with Vinny. So why would he warned me from him?
I sighed, feeling the weight of the situation. "Look, I know it's risky, but I owe them. Wooin helped my family when no one else could. I can't just turn my back on that."
Jay's eyes flickered with something I couldn't quite identify—concern, maybe? But he remained silent, his gaze steady on mine.
Finally, Jay spoke, his voice softer. "Just be careful."
I nodded, appreciating his concern. "Worried for me? Aw," I teased. "I didn't expect you to have this side to you." I continued to tease, but he remained serious, shaking his head. I couldn't help but laugh, knowing he was probably feeling embarrassed by my comments.
Actually, studying with Jay isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I expected him to give me a hard time, but it seems like it's just his personality to be reserved. I suddenly paused. What if he isn't really like this, especially with Shelly?
Oh, come on, Demitra. Why should I care about that? I frowned, feeling irritated with myself.
I was jolted from my thoughts by a knock on the door. Jay stood up to answer it, and I almost froze when I saw a middle-aged woman. From her appearance, she looked like Jay's mother! I quickly stood up and bowed.
"Good evening, Ma'am," I greeted her. She gave me a cold look. Now it made sense why Jay always had that cold expression on his face. He inherited it from his mom.
"You didn't eat dinner again?" she said sternly. I looked at Jay, confused, but his face remained emotionless.
"We're studying," he replied shortly.
"You didn't eat breakfast, and I know you didn't eat lunch at school either," his mother said angrily, but she paused when she noticed me.
"Let's talk in the living room."
"I'm fine. Just leave," Jay said.
"Jaehyun," his mother said firmly, leaving Jay with no choice but to get up. I was left alone in his room.
My heart pounded with worry about what I had witnessed. Was Jay going to be scolded? Was it because of me that he hadn't eaten dinner? I hadn't eaten dinner either. Damn, maybe it's my fault he missed his meal. His mother should be scolding me, not him!

A Tale of Five Tandems
The Body Language of Double Riding with your Buddy
This was bouncing around in my head when i went to the theaters and someone reminded me so here it comes. Bear with me.
Ride 1: The "Vespa" on the Island
For their first ride, Luca is anxious and hesitant! But Alberto is right, if he doesn't hold on to the front the makeshift Vespa will fall apart. Luca doesn't grab on until it begins to detach, keeping it whole and working correctly.
Tumblr media
He keeps a tight grip onto Alberto for the rest of the ride, out of fear or duty, but also because grabbing worked. He was right to trust Alberto. And then, when they're falling towards the rock, he stops grabbing and re-detaches it, because they would not survive if he stayed attached. (Parallels what parallels?)
Ride 2: The Dream Vespa
Later that night, Luca is much more confident. The trust he put in Alberto paid off and he faced his fear. And he's starting to share Alberto's appreciation of adrenaline. When he falls asleep, he's behind Alberto on a "real" Vespa. Holding his waist gently, not desperately like earlier. Comfortable and secure.
Tumblr media
Dream Alberto puts Luca in the drivers seat, perhaps representing Luca's growing confidence and desire for agency. Alberto encourages him to ramp up into the fish, but once there Alberto isn't holding him anymore. And when Luca goes even further and touches the moon, Alberto and the Vespa vanish.
(break added because long)
Ride 3: The Uphill and the Downhill
That worry (or maybe the whole dream) is forgotten for a time, and Alberto and Luca don't ride together on a two-wheeled vehicle until the day before the race. By this point much has changed. Tensions are rising and Alberto feels like Giulia is pushing them apart. While helping Luca strength train, he is literally separated from him by Giulia. At the top of the hill, things start to come to a head and Alberto interjects himself in front of Luca, for him to hold onto. Where he thinks he belongs. Luca's hands go out, but do not grasp him, not trusting him. Notably, Alberto has never ridden a bicycle.
Tumblr media
On the way down the hill, Luca only touches Alberto once, to try to take control of the handlebars. Is he willing to fall of the bike away from Alberto? He may be fearing his safety but he does not trust Alberto with this, and again this is justified. They did get down the hill, but they did crash. Into the sea.
Ride 4: The Race
After Ercole stymies Alberto's attempt to rescue Luca from the rain, Luca rescues Alberto from Ercole. Things are completely different. Alberto rides behind and he barely stops touching Luca the entire ride. He trusts Luca's ability and is putting his life in his hands.
Tumblr media
Alberto switches between Luca's waist or his shoulders, and once his face to avoid Ercole's harpoon, but he clings tight to Luca the entire time he is on the bike. No matter what jumps, rough terrain or murder threats are happening.
Ride 5: Victory Lap
Tumblr media
As Portorosso celebrates the Underdogs' victory, they drive the newly-purchased Vespa to Giulia's house. Luca is now between Alberto and Giulia, everyone holding each other by the shoulder, nobody feeling estranged. The body language is much more relaxed, like in the dream, no doubt helped by the slow speed. Alberto is driving, but the Vespa was his dream to begin with. And his to sacrifice if he chooses.
So yeah, this was I'd guess 80% intentional, 20% me reading too much into things, haha!

I worked my first day ever in the new (to me) downtown office building. My manager and some others were in town.
It's a nice building. The meet and greet was pleasant. I've only met my boss once before in person. I'd never met her manager until today. They are terrific people. They don't live or work in Minnesota.
Going out to lunch with coworkers was fun. Some of us walked through the skyway system to see which restaurants were still around. The pandemic was really hard on those places. My favorite (Skyway Wok) is still there, though we ate somewhere else.
It was good seeing people. I've known some of them for 30 years. We are starting to get younger people.
Being face to face is a positive thing. Car drivers yell at and flip off people, because they're inside a locked car. At the grocery store if someone pushing a cart gets in your way you more likely than not smile at each other, even if you're swearing in your head. Someone I work with has at times gotten on my nerves. Today that person and I got along well and had a nice conversation.
I rode Sheila's big scooter to work because the bus routes I used years ago are no longer in service, killed off by the pandemic. Being in traffic and paying $8 to park reminded me how much time and money I save working at home full time. I saw some scooters parked at bicycle racks. A sign said "No Motorcycles." Sheila's scooter is as large as a motorcycle (650 cc). I wasn't sure what I could get away with so that's why I went into a parking ramp.
Tomorrow I'm going in again. We're going out for drinks and snacks after work. Oooooh, I bet my boss will be paying. Oooooooh, I'd better find a different way to get to and from work so I can take full advantage of that!

Thinking about Sandman ships this morning and wondering why we are all ignoring Johanna Constantine.
She's a messy disaster bisexual who had oodles of sexual chemistry with Dream and could totally canonically know Hob Gadling.
I know the Dream/Hob/Calliope throuple is popular and I do get it if you are a fan of the show only, but I find it impossible to ship Dream/Calliope after knowing the comic story. Its just too sad and honestly, our girl can do better.
I like that they ramped up the romance there and the "i would kill for you" attitude from Morpheus in episode 11 so yeah totally get why we are swooning over that, but I think there are other less painful ships to explore.
Johanna Constantine is an amazing character and this fandom is sadly sleeping on her.
She should totally get to have a very messy disastrous affair with Morpheus and then break his heart worse than Thessaly ever could. She should then move on and date Death just to twist the knife. THAT would be an awesome ship.
Put her in a throuple with Dream and Hob instead. She'd be walking all over both of them and having the time of her life doing so.
Actually we should also be shipping her with Lucifer. Classic enemies to lovers right there given the job profession and quite frankly I'd love to see Gwendoline Christie step on that feisty little bisexual disaster. Possibly the only time I dont view Johanna as a total dom.
Dream may be the fandom bicycle, but Johanna Constantine should be the fandom bus. Making her way through every character sometimes at the same time.
Just a thought.

Exodus 10: 7-11, 24-26 - Passover is an annual reminder that we do not leave others behind
Moses and Pharaoh met together several times to negotiate the terms for the release of the Israelites. Pharaoh initially agrees to just letting the men go, then just the adults, then all of the people but not the animals. In the end, the Israelites young and old, and their animals, leave Egypt.
Moses never caved to Pharaoh's counter offers. It was to be all Israelites & their animals or none. In a stirring moment, Moses states, "Not a hoof shall remain behind."
Passover celebrates the events surrounding the Israelites leaving Egypt and is an annual reminder that we don't negotiate for our benefit at the expense of others. In our journeys toward freedom, we don't leave a single hoof behind. Civil Rights and freedoms aren't to be doled out sparingly but are to be obtained for everyone.
The Passover story has served as a prototype of liberation for centuries. The Passover is a reminder that peace, justice and liberation are not fantasy but a reality that can be obtained. Passover arrives in the spring, a period of new growth and hope.
One lesson of Exodus is that when you have privilege, it's easy to become blind to the fact you hold privilege. Initially Moses didn't recognize the privilege he had, it seemed like the natural order of things. When he learned the truth of his background, it transformed his understanding of things. As a consequence, he was willing to stand with and for all Israelis.
It's not a coincidence that in the United States and Europe, straight, white, able-bodied, cis men are the least likely to use the word "privilege" to describe their situation. They are the least likely to know and understand the privilege they hold. It seems normal and natural to them.
Sadly, some in the LGBTQ community are at times blind to the privileges that we hold, and are too willing to wield them in a way that harms others despite our own status as second-class citizens. We are too often a movement that favors white, cisgender, middle class gay men. Our most visible advocates portray our cause using traditional family structures — monogamy, marriage, and kids — while leaving behind people whose ideas of love and family make us uncomfortable or push our limits. Some gay and bi people fear losing the progress made for themselves by the backlash occurring against our transgender siblings, and consequently some speak of removing the T from LGBT. This is not a queer ideal. Nor is it a Passover ideal.
Transgender rights are human rights, we're all in this together. When the more vulnerable are taken care of, the rest of us are also taken care of. When transgender rights are secured, the rights of other queer people are secured.
There's a famous example of sidewalk cutouts, the curb ramps which make moving onto or off of a sidewalk less difficult. Kalamazoo, Michigan installed curb cuts in the 1940's as a way to aid veterans with disabilities. In the 1970's, Berkeley, California installed curb cuts as a way to help the disabled to better live independently.
Although these were intended for the benefit of people with a disability, such as people using a wheelchair or crutches, they are used by walkers who may be a little unsteady, by people pushing a stroller, by those pulling a cart, by children riding a bicycle, roller skate or skateboard. By making accommodations for a small group, we all benefited.
This is a vibrant illustration of how laws and programs designed to benefit vulnerable groups, such as the disabled or people of color, often end up benefiting all. We are all humans, we rise or fall together. If gender-affirming care is protected for trans people, such care is protected for all people, including a breast reduction for a male with gynecomastia, hormone blockers for young people who enter puberty too early, hormone replacement therapy for people experiencing the effects of age, hair removal, and so on.

Me, explaining Chanters of Tremaris to someone on Discord:
[Beware: spoilers ahead, if you intend to read the books]
Fictional planet, people can cause magic by singing, and the type of magic is generally a cultural/bloodline thing (much like AtLA)
Also a Prophesied One with All the Powers, except there's more than one person who can sing multiple magics, and the other guy is Evil
there's a fucked up city that's held up and kept beautiful and Not Falling Apart by enslaving children to sing it. Protagonists free the children and the city falls apart LITERALLY OMELAS I mean not really, because the Function of the enslaved and neglected children is obvious, and it's not everyone that knows But close enough
Haunting imagery of dead women sealed into a wall of ice out of fear of their illness reaching their sisters
Someone has a brother they didn't know about, and meets in the final book
The only girls allowed on boats are the ones that can sing the wind
(This is possibly just the one really misogynistic pirate ship, but still)
(A choice bit of worldbuilding. Girls are bad luck unless they can chant the wind)
Author did not seem to realize there was Lesbian Potential (boat girl and protagonist)
You get through the entire series and learn that the "lost magic" that nobody can rediscover is LITERACY nobody here can WRITE or READ there are no BOOKS
And you don't notice! As a reader! OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND I GUESS
Also it turns out that this is. Not the original planet. They find The Oldest City and the city is actually a giant spaceship That was used to settle the planet centuries ago Possibly millennia, given that an entire portion of the population, geographically separated from the rest, does not have vocal cords
No we do not know how the fuck the entire human population managed to collectively forget how to write
The worldbuilding starts out very standard fantasy and then spirals wildly out of control
@ioudaleks, helping me out: IT’S SUCH BONKERS WORLDBUILDING AND IT WORKS
ALIENS
THE BIRDS
A GENERATION SHIP
FUCKING GLOBAL ILLITERACY
NOT EVEN THE MERCHANT CLASS
ioudaleks: ICE WALL WITH CORPSES
At this point, the person we were goading to read it (whose tumblr I am unsure of), asked "there's a merchant class with no writing?"
And. Yes. There is.
There is a college with no writing
There is aristocracy with no writing
It makes absolutely NO sense AND YET
ioudaleks: Compelling tho
Innocent bystander we are infodumping at: "ig the song magic makes it work somehow. sing your memory good"
Oh, not at all
Not everyone can magic
Fire magic has been almost completely forgotten because it was outlawed
And the country that now has zero magic is the one with a college
One of the college students invents a bicycle and then helps them become fugitives by blowing up his own workshop as a distraction
There's a really annoying romance, but it's Standard for the genre and year of writing (16-17yo girl and a guy in his late 20s/early 30s)
And the impossible city with the enslaved kids has some uh. Very Hapsburg-esque romances.
ANYWAY the people who don't have vocal cords DO have magic dancing
ioudaleks: One whole system is overtone singing and supposedly only men can do it because of something something vocal cords. Only women sing the ice magic.
The magic to charm "beasts" is said to be lost but it turns out that the ice priestesses have kept it up as an oral tradition The songs we sing for the bees aren't magic! They just Like It 😃
I would encourage most people to read it just for that absolute bonkers ramping up into insanity
There is a Magic Trumpet It is very small A clarion You can use it to make fire
The bicycle arsonist found it and gave it to the sailor girl
@ihaveatypeanditstrickstergods: Wait, was the last thing writing in general or just musical notation?
And I'm so sorry to confirm that uh
It was. All writing
You think it's just musical notation but then they Figure Out Syllables
(I reread them a few years ago and have a whole unhinged rant about the trilogy, in that same server, in February 2020)
The series has a very solid, long-term hold on my hindbrain.
Have I ever treated it as a fandom? No. Has it doubtlessly affected me as a person and a writer? Yes
