Trick or treat ✨ฅ(•ㅅ•❀)ฅ
Depends on your interpretation of a treat, Pix. You get an excerpt.
The new school was interesting, at least in Chris’ opinion. Sure, people still gawked at his scar all the time, but it was so much better than where he was before. His English teacher immediately assigned reading partners, explaining that discussing the readings was just as important as drawing conclusions individually.
Chris glanced at his reading partner with disinterest. Her name was Millie Fitzsimmons, and she did not speak sign language. Her last name reminded him of Jeremy, which was the only reason he bothered to take an interest in her at all.
She was staring right back at him, seeming very interested in his dyed hair and scarred face. Chris didn’t take it personally. He did look interesting to an outside observer. His hair hadn’t really grown back yet either.
Millie leaned toward him as she spoke, “So, Chris. What types of books do you like to read?”
Chris tapped his pencil against his notebook for a moment, considering her question. His mother’s house had a wider selection of novels, and since she was gone all the time – albeit seeming more apologetic than his father or sister had been – he was allowed full access to her bookshelves.
Chris wondered if she was the reason his father’s house had absolutely no books or interesting material. It explained a lot, especially after he’d found his own name scribbled in the front cover of several books. He determined that they were definitely above his age-range when he’d originally read them, probably explaining his nightmares.
Finally, he remembered that Millie was waiting for a response. He shrugged, writing, “A bit of everything, to be honest. I prefer short stories to anything else.”
He wished he could explain better. That he loved seeing how writers wrote such wonderful stories without needing a whole book or even a series to capture it all.
While Millie skimmed the words he’d written, Chris quickly added, “Poe’s my favorite author though.”
“The Cask of Amontillado” was Chris’ favorite story to read since the Bite. The implied betrayal and potential for the narrator’s guilt at having killed Fortunato was all too familiar to Chris.
“Edgar Allan Poe is your favorite author?” Millie raised an eyebrow, mildly impressed. “What’s your favorite work by him?”
Chris stared at her for a moment. Should he be completely honest? Truth be told, no one had tried to hold a conversation with him this long before. He gave a so-so gesture before writing, “If I have to pick one, I’d say ‘The Cask of Amontillado.’ What about you?”
She hummed for a moment. “I’d say… ‘Annabel Lee.’ The love shared between her and the speaker transcends heaven and hell, Chris. Isn’t that amazing?”
Chris shrugged. He found the poem depressing, truth be told. He couldn’t even imagine understanding what it could feel like to care for someone like that, only to lose them to others’ jealousy. But Jeremy would, a voice muttered in the back of his mind. He frowned slightly as that came up. It was private information, and whomever Jeremy chose to be with was none of his business.
Millie was carefully watching his expression, and she frowned back at him. “Do you hate romance or something?”
Chris shook his head. He wrote, “I just don’t get it.”
“Huh. Maybe you should read more,” Millie said, patting him gently on the shoulder as the bell rang for the end of class.
He decided he didn’t really like Millie, after that moment. Maybe it was something he should’ve blamed the Bite for instead of her overwhelming emotional attachment to a piece of poetry, but really. Did people actually develop obsessions with other people’s relationships?
Unfortunately, the rest of his morning didn’t go very well, and he found himself stuck eating lunch with Millie that day. And the next day, and the next day.
He didn’t understand how the entire school just decided they weren’t worth the effort of getting to know, and he expressed it in his letters to Fritz. Fritz would write back, saying the social circles must’ve closed before he was ready for it.
Chris always scowled after he read that. So eventually, he gave up, instead asking Fritz how Susie was doing. Funnily enough, his responses to that were much lighter and more cheerful. Fritz had succeeded in getting her to spend more time with him at lunch, and apparently, they ate together every day.
Fritz talked about how much she loved baking and how cool she found his ability to run. Fritz was excited about his friendship with Susie, and Chris was certain he wanted to push it further. If he’d had any advice for Fritz, he’d tell him to slow down and make sure they were close enough that their friendship could handle it if things went downhill. But Fritz was his best friend, so he just pretended to be happy for him.
The next week, he decided to be nicer to Millie about her whole thing with romance. “So,” he wrote in his notebook during lunch, something Millie never ate. “I’ve attempted to figure out what you mean by the transcending romance, and I just don’t get it.”
Millie frowned as he started eating. “Well,” she said with severe emphasis, “I prefer the stories where they’re willing to die for each other. When one dies for the other, you really see how things are. Like, depending on how they grieve, you can tell whether they actually loved each other, or if something was amiss.”
Chris considered that for a moment. “So if they don’t mourn properly, they don’t love each other?”
“Exactly.” Millie’s frown faded. “See, you kind of get it.”
Chris frowned. “Well, if that’s how it works, then my family probably would prefer if I was dead.”
Millie stiffened. “What?”
Chris shrugged. “I don’t mean my mom. I just mean that my dad and my sister probably couldn’t care less if I was alive. So I left to live with my mom.”
“Oh.” Millie blinked at him. “I thought you meant they’d try to kill you or something.”
“Well, someone actually did do that too,” Chris wrote. “But it was an accident.”
“You’re a strange guy, Chris.”
Chris just shrugged. He didn’t really care either way what she thought. Pointedly taking a bite of his sandwich, Chris successfully ended the conversation.
“Got any plans for winter break?” Millie asked him a few days later.
Chris considered the question for a moment, before shaking his head. “Fritz wants me to come visit, but I don’t particularly feel like going back there.”
Especially since Fritz was talking about all the kids who’d gone missing. Each time it happened, Fritz sent a letter dedicated to all the information he knew about the kid who’d gone missing. Every time, Chris could tell right away, and he’d put it in his desk, unread. Fritz wasn’t sending those for a response anyway. It was just a way to cope, or so Chris believed.
He sent letters back asking about school and Fritz’s relationship with Susie. Fritz constantly shot back encouragement to come visit and see for himself, but Chris didn’t think he was ready to go back.

Very fluffy moment: an AU where Jily lives- ofc-and Hinny tells them about the new baby (can be any of the pregnancies)
LOVE SOME GOOD JILY LIVES FLUFF
"Why are you so nervous?" Ginny asked him, squeezing his hand as they waited by the front door. "You know they'll be happy for us, right?"
Harry shook his head. "That's the problem. They'll be too happy. Remember when we told them we were engaged?"
"Well, at least we're prepared for the dramatics," she assured him.
Just then, the door swung open, James smiling brightly at his son and daughter-in-law. "There's the most beautiful couple in the world," he proclaimed, bringing them both into a hug.
"Never prepared enough," Harry whispered to Ginny out of the corner of his mouth. She giggled.
"What was that?" James asked as they broke apart.
"Nothing," Harry waved off. "Hi, Dad."
They stepped inside the Godric's Hollow cottage to see the table fully set, Lily taking out one last thing from the oven.
"Mum," Harry sighed, walking over to her. "I told you I'd help with dinner tonight."
"Don't worry about it, love," she said, reaching up and kissing his cheek. "I wanted to give you a break, I know you've been working hard."
"But I like cooking with you," he told her earnestly.
"That's sweet, Harry," Ginny interjected, patting his arm. "But let your mum mother you for the night, yeah?"
"Listen to your wife, kid," James said as he put on oven mitts and picked up a tray to bring to the table. "How are you doing, Gin?"
"Great," she said, smiling. Then, "Pregnant."
The tray slipped from James's hands and shattered to the floor. All three of them were staring at her, Harry somewhat exasperated. Being the only one not in shock, she took out her wand and cleared up the mess, the tray all put together back on the table.
Harry shook out of his stupor. "I thought we were going to tell them after dinner," he murmured.
"Sorry," she responded, though he wasn't sure she meant it. She continued to smile. "You know me. Impulsive. Felt like the right moment."
They looked back at James and Lily, both still looking stunned.
"Surprise?" Harry tried.
"I know you're both pretty young to be grandparents," Ginny said. "But if it's any consolation, you're going to be like, the coolest grandparents anybody has ever had."
The word "grandparents" seemed to do it. James started to laugh and Lily burst into tears.
"Bloody hell," James exclaimed, wrapping Ginny up in a bear hug. "You're having a baby!"
"Mum, it's okay," Harry tried, rushing over to Lily.
Lily grabbed his face and smiled brightly. "You're going to be the most amazing, loving, caring, magnificent, brilliant father-"
James broke away from Ginny and looked towards his wife. "Hey, hey, hey, what am I, then?"
"The most amazing, loving, caring, magnificent, brilliant grandfather?" Harry tried.
"Oh god, what do I go by? Grandpa? Grandad? Papa?"
"Absolutely not Papa," Lily intervened, wiping her tears.
"Sorry, right, that's reserved for-"
"Stop!" Harry warned, and all three of them laughed. "Why don't we sit down and eat, yeah?"
They all listened, but as soon as they started piling food on their plates, James started again. "Need name ideas? 'Cause I've got one-"
"Let me guess," said Lily. "Is it James?"
Ginny giggled.
"What?" James asked, feigning innocence. "It's a classic name!"
"We'll see," said Harry, smiling in spite of himself.

Chapter Three
Remus snickered at you from where he sat on your bed as he watched you push hangers aside, fully intent on finding something warm to wear. It was the first Hogsmeade trip of the year and it was freezing outside, it was also Halloween.
“What?” you scowled at your friend over your shoulder and he held up his hands in mock surrender.
“We’re gonna be late at this rate.”
You rolled your eyes as you fixed Remus with a glare that he only innocently smiled at, “then help me, Remus.”
He laughed and made a show of huffing as he got up from your bed and walked over to help you look, “Merlin, Y/N,” he chuckled, “you literally don’t have anything for freezing weather. You do realise that we’re in the Scottish Highlands, right?” he quirked an eyebrow as he pulled out a lacy pair of red lingerie, “Y/N…”
You blushed furiously as you snatched the lingerie from him and threw it into the depths of your wardrobe, “I prefer style over comfort, okay?”
Remus rolled his eyes and raked a hand through his hair, “fine, wait here,” he was gone for a couple of moments before he returned with an emerald green jumper, “here,” he threw it at you and you caught it, giving him a questioning look, “it’ll keep you warm.”
You smiled, “thanks, Remus.”
Remus was right, it was very warm and due to Remus being tall and lanky it was more like a dress on you but it was soft and you liked it. Remus smiled in satisfaction when you came out of your bathroom in the jumper.
“It looks so good on you.”
“Thanks, Remus,” you grinned before stopping short, “do you think that Sirius is going to be okay today?” Halloween was Sirius’ favourite holiday, but it had been Regulus’ favourite too.
Remus sighed with a nod, “he’ll be fine around his friends. The question is, will you be okay?” he asked you as he wrapped his arms around you. You smiled into his chest as you nodded before pulling away slightly.
“I’ll be fine, everyone thought I was in love with him, even Lucius but Regulus was my best friend, I miss him so much.”
“I know, Y/N,” Remus nodded as he pulled you into another hug, his hand tangled in your hair.
You laughed lightly to break the tension, “come on, let’s go.”
As you and Remus left your dormitory you ran into Sirius, he looked surprised when he ran into both you and Remus, “hey, I was coming to find you, to ask if you’d seen Remus but you guys are together,” a muscle fluttered in his jaw as he looked between you and Remus, “is that Remus’ jumper?”
“Yeah, and?” you countered, raising an eyebrow.
Sirius’ eyes flashed with something that you couldn’t quite put your finger on, he finally shrugged, “nothing, come on, James and Lily will be waiting for us,” he stormed ahead without waiting for an answer.
You and Remus exchanged an amused look as you followed Sirius down the corridor, “he’s jealous, Remus smirked at you.
You laughed, you very much doubted that Sirius had ever felt jealous about anything, “of me or you?”
Remus pretended to think for a moment, “both?” he offered making you laugh.
“Both is good,” you both snickered and hurried to catch up with Sirius.
You met James and Lily in the Entrance Hall where they were talking to Harry, as you neared the three of them, you could hear Harry complaining. It was almost scary how much he sounded like James when he was complaining.
“But, why?” he whined.
You could tell that Lily was trying not to laugh at her son, “it’s always been that way, angel, you can come to Hogsmeade next year.”
“I always thought it was a stupid rule too, Harry,” you ruffled his already messy hair, making him grin up at you, “I’ll bring you some sweets from Honeydukes.”
He nodded with a satisfied look on his face, “thanks, Aunt Y/N,” he said his goodbyes and then went off to meet his friends.
Lily grinned over at you, “ooh, I love that jumper, very cute.”
Before you could reply, Sirius cut in, “it’s Remus’.”
You and Remus exchanged a look, yours was one of bewilderment while the look on Remus’ face was very smug. Lily raised an eyebrow at Sirius, “so, what’s your point?”
Sirius shrugged for the second time that morning, “no point, I’m just saying.”
James looked between you and Sirius with narrowed eyes before shaking his head, come on guys, let’s go.”
As soon as you walked out of the castle you wrapped the jumper tighter around yourself, silently thanking Merlin for Remus making you wear it. Remus saw your reaction and smirked, looking very pleased with himself. The walk to Hogsmeade was just as beautiful as you remembered it, the wind blew through the fiery embers of the leaves and you smiled as you spotted a group of Hippogriffs rise up through the trees and fly South.
A wave of emotion washed over you as you saw the pretty village nestled in the hills beyond the ancient ruins, “it looks exactly the same,” you breathed.
James nodded, “yeah, it is pretty much the same.”
It was hard to explain the feeling that Hogsmeade gave you, it was like the air was fizzing with magic.
“Right,” James clapped his hands together making you jump, “what’s the plan?”
“I need to get some stuff for my classes,” Remus spoke up and you nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, same, and I need to go to Honeydukes too.”
Remus glanced at you, “well, why don’t I meet you at Honeydukes and then we can all meet up at the Three Broomsticks?”
“Sure,” you smiled and Lily nodded.
“Sounds good, see you guys soon,”
The five of you quickly went your separate ways, just like old times. As you restocked your potion ingredient supply you caught up with the old farmer who looked far more grizzled than when you were in school. You were quick to catch up with him before you were rushing over to Honeydukes. It seemed like your rushing was in vain because you were the first one to arrive at the sweet shop. The smell of sugar was so nostalgic, it transported you back 15 years.
“Can you please get me another box of Sugar Quills?” you pouted as you tried and failed to grab the box of sweet treats from the high shelf.
“Of course,” Regulus grinned as he effortlessly grabbed the box of sweets and handed it to you.
“Thank you, baby.”
“Anything for my favourite lady,” you laughed at your best friend and turned to see your boyfriend entering the shop.
“Hi, angel,” he grinned and leaned down to kiss you, when he pulled away he raised a silver eyebrow, “so, you’re the encouragement of Y/N’s addiction are you?” Lucius drawled as he squinted at Regulus.
Regulus rolled his eyes, “Merlin, Malfoy, it’s a bit of sugar, lighten up will you,” he scowled and pushed past Lucius. It was common knowledge that Regulus hated Lucius.
“Y/N,” Remus’ voice pulled you out of your memories and you smiled at him.
“Hey, Rem,” you grabbed some sweets for Harry and a couple of boxes of Sugar Quills to which Remus snickered, “nothing’s changed then?” he asked nodding at the sweets.
“I wouldn’t say so,” you laughed.
As you were walking down the high street, Remus unwrapped a bar of chocolate, “want some?” he offered it to you. You smiled at him as you leaned forwards and took a big bite out of it, “hey!” Remus yelped, and you rolled your eyes, knowing that he’d bought enough chocolate to last him a lifetime.
Drinks with the others were really nice – Sirius had gotten rid of his foul mood – and James didn’t have to sweet talk the barmaid into selling him Fire Whiskey. Every time you heard the door swing open you looked up, half expecting the gang of Slytherins to saunter in and torment the gang of Gryffindors sitting by the fire. But of course, that never happened.
At the Halloween feast that evening, Sirius gave you a small smile as he passed you the plate of pumpkin pie, “I’m sorry that I’ve been in a weird mood today.”
You smiled at him as you took a slice of pie, “you don’t have to apologise, it’s all good.”
Sirius regarded you with grey eyes as he took a deep drink from his goblet, “you’ve thought about him today, haven’t you?”
You sighed and nodded, “it’s hard not to, he loved Halloween, I miss him so much.”
Sirius nodded, “I miss him too,” he gave you a weak smile before he chuckled, “do you remember when we won the Quidditch Cup? It was mine and James’ last year?”
You almost snorted into your pie, “when your brother called me a fucking show off?” you giggled as you were forced into the past once more.
The crowd below you were roaring in appreciation as everyone watched the match that would determine the winner of the Quidditch Cup. Regulus smirked at you as you both searched for the snitch.
“You really want to win this one last time for James, huh?” he shouted at you over the wind.
“Don’t put me off, Reggie,” you squinted as you saw something gold flit around the pale sky.
You quickly swerved around Regulus and you heard him swear as you hurried after the snitch. The snitch was a mere hair away but it was still too far for you to reach, you weren’t going to win this, Reggie was catching up and he was an excellent seeker.
In that moment, you decided to do something very stupid, carefully but quickly you stood, balancing on your broom and leaning forwards. You did your best to ignore the gasps of the crowd 100 feet below you. This position gave you the leverage you needed and as you were about to grab the snitch you fell. Your heart was in your throat as one hand grabbed something cold and the other grabbed something warm and smooth.
When you opened your eyes you were dangling from your broom with one hand and the other hand was grasping the snitch. You laughed and held it in the air as the crowd went wild below you. You heard a chuckle in your ear and Regulus pulled you back onto your broom with a smirk on his face.
“You’re such a fucking show off, Potter,” he grinned, “but I’m so proud of you,” he pulled you into the tightest hug.
“Y’know when you and Malfoy split up, I always thought you and Reg would end up together.”
You shook your head, “everyone thought that, but Reggie and I were never like that.”
Sirius nodded before his face grew sad, “sometimes I think that it’s my fault that he joined Voldemort, my fault that he was killed.”
You sighed, placing a hand on his arm, a funny feeling swirling in your stomach, “Regulus loved you Sirius, never forget that.”

Fuck it Friday/ Inspiration Saturday!
It's a very late FIF and almost late Inspiration Saturday, but I am here with a snippet/ moodboard combo for a bit more of Frostpunk AU. I'm not super happy with this section but I've been working on writing - uh - something else today (don't judge me it was very spur of the moment) so this is as much as I could scrounge up. Tomorrow's another (and better) day!!

Tommy and Sal also look a little worse for wear as they pull on their scouting gear and check each other over. The usual pep in their step is missing, along with the jokes that Buck’s grown to love. A tired team doesn’t bode well for a mission, especially not one like this where there are other people’s lives at stake, but as Bobby had said, it’s an urgent one and there’s no other option. A rough hand brushes over his neck, pulling the collar of his undershirt up so he’s properly covered and Buck turns to see Bobby, his face pulled in a tight smile. “You okay, kid?” Buck shrugs as he chains his crampons to the bottom of his boots. “Yeah, tired is all. That last mission took it out of me.” Bobby nods in acknowledgement, giving Buck’s shoulder a quick squeeze. “Maddie’s promised to take us off missions for the next week as an apology.” “Assuming we make it back from this one,” Buck replies stiffly, tightening the chains so the crampons won’t slip off. He’s lost too many pairs in the snow before and it’s only in the last couple of missions that Bobby hasn’t knelt at his feet and checked them himself, a faint echo of how he used to help Buck with his shoelaces when he was a young boy. Bobby chuckles and ruffles Buck’s hair. “Stop being so dramatic, we’ve survived longer missions and on much less sleep. It’ll be fine.” Tommy makes his way over to the pair, his crampons clicking against the wooden slats of the street as he walks. “What’s the plan, Cap?” he asks, leaning against the wooden crate Buck’s currently perched on. Bobby gestures to Sal and Eli, who slouch on over, and he huddles them in close, like a coach prepping his team before a match.

I think my brain needs to shut up about new AUs. I don't need crossovers for stuff I haven't even written down!
Anyway, had a new thought for Evan Lives AU. Our boy is Aroace rn, but what if he was loveless aro? Idk how to fully write that, so I'd probably need help with representing it properly, but he deserves to be his own person. I'd appreciate if y'all had pointers for representing it correctly! I would hate to misrepresent you guys, since I'm not loveless myself.
Everyone deserves rep though

Decennial
(2,396 words)
Evan and Gregory, now age twenty-two, celebrate the tenth anniversary of their meeting in the comfort of their shared apartment.
Its already the afternoon when Evan meets Gregory at the couch in their shared apartment, smartphone in hand. Gregory glances up from whatever he was watching on TV, quickly grabbing the remote to pause the channel.
He doesn't even have a chance to greet him before he notices Evan's face. Worry quickly creases his brows, and he moves to get off of the couch. "Evan? Hey, what's wron--"
Evan tries to convey that everything's fine with no words. Because it's true. He just can't muster any up right now. When Gregory seems to understand enough, that's when Evan thrusts his phone into Gregory's line of sight.
Gregory shifts on the couch, taking the phone and studying the screen to no avail. Hes pulled up the calendar on his phone, the date reading March 4th, 2045. Gregorys brows furrow, then, "Uh. I dont understand."
Evan would have rolled his eyes if he weren't so emotional right now. He scoffs, tapping the screen and mumbling "The date. Look at the date."
It only takes another moment for Gregory to understand. Evan can almost see the gears turning in his friends head in the moments before he gasps sharply. "Oh!"
Gregory doesn't look away immediately, just taking it in as if it surpises him. "Its ten years since we met today."
Evan nods at that. A small smile stretching on his face when Gregory finally turns to look at him.
But he should know by now -really, it's been ten years after all- that Gregory knows him. Probably better than Evan himself.
"What's with that look?" Gregory questions, seemingly noticing how Evans smile doesnt quite reach his eyes. "You look sad."
Evan shakes his head immediately. "No-- that's not it." He replies, feeling a bit more fit to speak. "Its just..."
"Ten years?" Gregory prompts, and Evan nods. Gregory seems to get it. He sighs a bit, and Evan can tell hes not alone in reminiscing. "Jeez. Thats..."
"...A long time ago." "A big number." They say at the same time.
Evan joins Gregory on the couch, taking his phone back. Ten years. Ten years since he met Gregory. Ten years since Evan had been that little ball of anxiety. Ten years since the best thing that ever happened to him.
Nine years since their first holidays together. Eight years since they started high school. Four since they graduated. Three since they started college.
One year since they got their first apartment together.
Evan chuckles all of the sudden, loud as a jet engine in the seemingly silent room. "Do you remember what we always wanted to do as kids?"
Gregory only has to think for a moment. "You mean what we made a reality?"
"Yeah." Evan replies. "We got that apartment. Not exactly the college dorm we imagined, though."
"Psh. Are you kidding? Our apartment is way better than any dorm we could have gotten." Gregory scoffs. "We would have like. One room to our name, and we would have to share."
Its Evan's turn to scoff, this time. He smiles, the memories coming back easily. "You're acting like we didnt basically share your room when we were thirteen."
"You were always there." Gregory agrees, but Evan knows by now that Gregory doesn't mean it in a bad way. Never. That's one of the things that have changed since they met. Evan doesnt assume the worst first, and ask questions later anymore. "You got that right."
"Thank god we had Vanessa to tell us what to do." Evan says. "We would be lost without her."
Gregory snorts, shuffling on the couch. Evan glances over, and strangely, being here, in this moment, even though its nothing differnet from what he and Gregory do every day, reminds him so much of when he and Gregory would just hang out together on his bed. Drawing, watching videos, talking and laughing... all of it.
"Its a good thing she told us to get an apartment while we still could." Gregory says. "We would have burned down the entire dorm."
Evan giggles at the thought. It wouldn't be the first time he and Gregory would make a mess in the kitchen. He still remembers how scared he was as a fourteen year old, when he had burned some of the food meant for Vanessa's 'Welcome Home' dinner Gregory insisted they make. The Fazbears house had stunk of char and smoke for days afterwards.
He was terrified at the time. If he had ever done anything like that at his old house...
He shakes that thought away. He does that often. Thinking back to his time alone with his father and brother. His biological ones. It's been a challenge, shutting down his brain when it tries to recall the memories.
Its another thing that's changed. As a kid, he knew nothing about helping himself and his anxiety. He didnt want to. He never saw himself as worthy of deserving relief, and it was so subconscious, little Evan never even realized it.
Now, it couldn't be more different. Hes never been healthier.
Who knew all it took was a best friend for life?
He looks over at Gregory. Who's still recounting some of their old childhood memories. Evan doesnt talk to Michael anymore. The damage he caused is too much to ignore. Evan... Evan doesnt want to see him anymore. Despite Michaels wake up call, it had been all too late. The damage had been done.
Michael missed his chance. Evan had decided that a long time ago. Maybe he should have had his change if heart earlier if he didnt want Evan to find the brother he always wanted in someone else.
Because that's what Gregory is. Its nothing new, they were having these revelations when they were only teenagers. Probably even earlier for Evan. But Evan never stops thinking about how much Gregory truly is his family.
That suprise and shock of the kindness hed received from Gregory from little Evan ten years ago is hard to shake when all hed been taught his whole life is how to hate himself. How he deserved to be treated badly, because if he hadn't been the way he was, he could have made himself worthy. A respectable man. Tough. An immovable rock. Real men dont show their emotions, or even experience them. Real men can defend themselves. Real men start to toughen up at the ripe age of twelve.
Evan is twenty two, now. So is Gregory. This life they'd built for themselves, with such a bright future... little Evan never would have even dreamed of. Little Evan had thought there was nothing there for him. Little Evan had thought there was no light at the end of the tunnel. That he had been doomed from the start. That his nature nipped his figure at the bud before it could begin.
This life theyve built for themselves. When Evan had ran to the Fazbears as soon as he'd turned eighteen with only a bag of clothes, a binder full of drawings, and yellow bear to his name. When he'd shared the room that felt like his own as well growing up with Gregory. When they'd spent those few months together until getting into the same college and choosing an apartment.
This life theyve built for themselves. That Evan would have only seen as a fantasy when he was eleven.
Theyve changed so much. It always shocks Evan every time he sees an old photo, or really remembers what it had been like pre-Gregory. Evan is growing out his hair, now. Before, all hed ever had was a months overgrown generic slickback. But he gets to choose now. Like how he paints his nails. Gregory has never really cared about his appearance, but he saw a photo of his Dad as a college student and immediately went to go replicate the blue streaks in his hair when it was time for himself to go off to college.
Evan almost laughs sometimes when he thinks about how much Gregory really is just an older version of who he was when he was twelve. He's different, like Evan is, but he's the same as well. A constant.
He knows hes the same, as well. Just with longer hair, bolder clothes, and the power of experimentation. Gregory has never been one to care much about his clothes, but to Evan, its everything. To be able to wear what he always wanted as a kid. To not be confined to whatever annual clothes his Father would buy him from the back to school section. Its freeing.
It's in that moment that he thinks back, really thinks back to his life pre-Gregory, and the contrast of the before and after.
It's all too much, in that moment. The memories and the sentiments and the nostalgia. In true Evan fashion, he cries about it.
Gregory has long since learned how to differentiate Evan's tears between his emotionality and a genuine issue. So when Evan begins wiping silent tears away, he just smiles one of those smiles he does, and pats him on the shoulder, pulling him in for a side hug.
Its digging a hole in Evan's chest, this feeling. It's not bad. But it's not exactly good either. It's some kind of a loss, but a hope as well. Remembering how much he loved back then. As much as he loves right now.
"I--" Evan stutters, sniffling. Gregory hands him one of the many boxes of tissues they always have on hand in their apartment. "It... It feels like we need to celebrate, somehow. I mean... ten years is big."
Evans mind floats to a cake. Or a two person party. Or a collaborated drawing. Evan's mind floats to many things. Many options. Ten years is big, right? Something that big needs a big party. Something big to commemorate it.
But Gregory just hums, and lays eyes on the thick shelf of DVDs they have tucked by the wall right by their TV. "How about a movie night?"
Evan's about to interrupt, say something about the milestone, but Gregory continues. "Do you remember all our favorites as a kid?"
Evan stops himself short, almost scoffing, because of couse he does. How could he not, when he and Gregory had stayed up so many times to watch them together, alongside stifled giggles and ice cream straight out of the carton? "Of course I do."
Gregory gets off the couch, crouching by the bookshelf and picking out a select few movies. Evan catches the titles on the packaging from all the way were hes sitting. Every single one of them is special to him.
Gregory deposits the movies on their coffee table, three DVDs spilling out onto the glass surface. "Then I can't think of a better way to spend the night."
Despite Evan's attempts, he cant either. Despite watching these movies almost regularly with Gregory even now, opening the casing feels different in this moment. It feels special. Evan feels like hes thirteen again.
Before starting their marathon, they make a huge bowl of popcorn, pouring caramel on it just how they liked it as kids. As they continue to now. Evan gets the carton of ice cream out of the fridge, handing Gregory his spoon and taking his own.
All they need is a throw blanket and they're ready. It's the exact setup they've done for years. Starting ten years ago today. This tradition has lasted this long, and it will outlive the milestone.
It feels so familiar, Evan cant stop thinking. His emotions are dialed up to eleven tonight. It only increases when the sky darkens outside their windows. He remembers coming home from school with Gregory and just. Immediately piling onto his bed with snacks and pillows and turning the lights off before they'd dive into another movie. Only going to bed when Freddy forced them to.
Because that's what it was. Thats what it still is. Home. All Evan feels right now is home.
They laugh at all the same parts. They cry as well. They cheer. They point out the same things. Nothing has changed.
Sure, ten years is big. But Evan can't think of a better way of spending the anniversary than continuing to do what hes loved to do with Gregory throughout the years. This doesnt mark the end of an era, or a big change. It marks how long hes had the gift of his brother. His family. His real family. The fifteenth mark will, as well. So will the twentieth.
All the tenth mark says is hes had ten years worth of joy and growth. and He'll continue to do just that.
After the third movie, Evan takes a quick look at his phone. The numbers 12:03 look back at him from his lockscreen, a picture of him and Gregory. The date has switched to the 5th.
"You're my brother." Evan says suddenly to Gregory at the beginning of the fourth movie. Gregory pauses in stuffing his face with popcorn to look over at Evan's earnest face. "You know that?"
Gregory chuckles wetly. It seems Evan isn't alone in the sentimentality tonight. "Only since we were preteens."
Gregory pulls him into that same side hug he always does. "You're my family." Gregory tells him sincerely. "You always will be, too. Hell would freeze over before our family would ever say you aren't one of theirs."
Evan chuckles, eyes misty, because he knows its true. He can imagine his family's reactions so vividly. "I know."
They only sink further into the hug after that, the movie continuing on. Theyve long since stopped with the thank yous. Not since they got it through Evan's thick skull that they arent doing him a favor. They just love him.
It's in that moment that Evan realizes that tomorrow is another day. And there are more after that and after that. Theres more milestones to reach, more years to spend with his brother and their family, and he cant wait to experience them.
But right now, he's content continuing a ten year long tradition as a mundane celebration for a non-mundane achievement.
It's not mundane to him at all, anyway. It means the world to him.
Besides, he can't imagine a world where his family doesn't throw a suprise party for him when he and Gregory visit them tomorrow.

‘Now, now,’ Remus whispers softly, rubbing Sirius’ back. ‘Let it all out, come on, it’ll help.’
‘I just can’t believe —‘ Sirius sobs into his own hands. ‘that this is the second time I get to see a Potter marry a redhead.’
