“…And by poison you mean…” Murtagh still wasn’t sure he’d heard his brother correctly. He set aside his notes and watched his brother from across the desk.
Their discussion about possible curricula for new dragon riders led to Eragon reminiscing about his time in Ellesméra. Murtagh braced for annoyance at hearing about his brother and his dragon playing with elves while Thorn was being flayed and he was almost hoping that the twins would find an interesting way to torture him. He hadn’t expected this turn.

Coffee and Journals
.・゜✭・. Spencer Reid x F!Reader .・゜✭・.

Summary: You step out of your comfort zone and meet a guy in a coffee shop who you somehow befriend, and end up in the theaters with him translating a Russian film.
A/N: omg this one is so cuteee, I love it lmk your thots<3
BYR(b4 u Reid): use of y/n, mentions of anxiety, readers never had a bf, inexperienced reader & Spencer, can be season 1 & 2 Spencer | none <- [warnings]
It started with a trip to the coffee shop.
You weren’t supposed to be there, at least, not alone. You didn't go places alone. That was just how… things were. But it was a new year, and you were tired of every year being the same.
No new friends, no love interests, no new experiences.
You knew, deep down, that you couldn't keep living like this. The loneliness was starting to feel like a weight pressing down on you, making everything dull.
So, here you were, Ordering a drink at the register, by yourself. God, was your voice shaking?
“Um, can I get a-a regular iced latte?” You asked, trying not to sound as nervous as you felt. The cashier nodded, you paid, and that was it.
It was such a small thing ordering coffee, and you’ve done it a lot of times just this time you didn’t have the comfort of a friend right beside you. You were all alone.
You felt proud, proud that you left your home, came to the café alone, and now you were going to enjoy it at the shop.
You picked a small table, hands gripping your journal as you sat down, waiting for your order to be called. The café was a little too busy for comfort. Too many eyes, not on you, you knew that, but… it felt like they were.
You took a deep breath, opening your journal.
Do I look weird?
No, no. There were plenty of people doing the same thing. You weren’t standing out.
After a few moments your drink was finally called, you stood up, going to grab it, only to find there was two.
The man beside you just looked at you unsure of which one was his and which one was yours.
“Oh- um, I’m not sure which is which.” He said, glancing between the two drinks. You looked at him, then at the cups, trying to find anything that could differentiate them. Nothing.
“Uh, excuse me, which one is the iced coffee?” You asked the barista. “They both are.” She answered flatly, like it was the dumbest question she’d ever heard. Your stomach twisted immediately.
Great, now I sound stupid.
“Which one has non-dairy milk?” The guy asked
The barista sighed, rolling her eyes. “I don’t know, maybe that one.” She pointed to the cup on the right.
You and the guy exchanged a look.
“Um… I guess I’ll just take this one.” You mumbled, grabbing the drink you had originally reached for. You don’t have any dairy problems, and didn’t care for the kind of milk used so it wasn’t too much of a problem.
You can hear the guy sigh as you walked away.
You sat down, watching him talk to the barista, clearly trying to get his order fixed. You couldn’t blame him for being frustrated.
You refocused on your journal, writing down your thoughts about stepping out of your comfort zone. About how weird it felt. How anxious you still were, and how you hoped this wouldn’t be another failed attempt at trying to change.
“Hi, I’m sorry, but do you mind if I have a seat?”
You looked up.
It was the non-dairy guy.
Your first instinct was to say no. You didn’t want anyone sitting with you. This was already too much social interaction for one day.
Or you could just leave, but if you let yourself retreat, wouldn’t that be losing? Wouldn’t you end up right back where you started, lying in bed tonight, frustrated with yourself for failing at something as simple as existing in a public space ?
“Of course.” You said instead, nodding toward the empty chair.
He gave you a polite smile and sat down. You stole a glance at him. Tall, kind of lanky, brown hair, sharp features, hazel eyes. He didn’t seem much older than you.
You tried to focus on your journal again, but it was hard with someone new in front of you.
“You know, an iced coffee isn’t something I normally get.” He said suddenly
You blinked, looking up.
He was talking to you.
“I usually just get a regular hot coffee.” He continued, like this was a totally normal thing to say to a stranger. “Today I wanted something different. And, well… you saw how that went.”
You let out an awkward little laugh, like the ones you give people when you aren’t sure what to say.
Is he crazy? Why is he talking to me?
“I get it.” You said after a pause. “I don’t usually get coffee on my own, and the one time I do, my coffee gets mixed with yours, and then the barista has a shitty attitude.”
That was relatable, right? That made sense?
Stop overthinking.
He smiled. “I’m Spencer Reid.”
First and last name, who does that?
“I’m y/n.” You said, giving him a small smile in return
you didn't give him your last name, it felt too formal, you guys also didn't shake hands which relieved you because those were always so awkward for you.
Almost all physical touch was awkward with you.
“I'll let you get back to work.” He said, pulling a book out of his bag.
“It’s not really work.” You admitted, which shocked you because you were trying to continue this conversation. “Just journaling.”
He glanced up again, nodding slightly. “Studies show that journaling can improve working memory, reduce stress, and even strengthen the immune system,” he said. “James Pennebaker, a psychologist at the University of Texas, found that expressive writing helps people process traumatic events by organizing thoughts and emotions, which can lead to improved mental health and reduced anxiety.”
You stared at him.
“Yeah… That’s kind of why I’m trying it.” You said, giving a small smile.
You narrowed your eyes playfully. “How do you know all that?” He just shrugged as if it was nothing “I read alot.”
“That’s cool.”
“Really?” He smiled a little. “A lot of my friends think I’m crazy, and that I should be spending more time doing other things.”
You shook your head. Well… okay, you did think he was a little crazy. But only because he could start a conversation so easily. You couldn’t imagine doing that.
“Not crazy, I think it’s fascinating your brain is able to retain all that information.”
The two of you settled into silence after that. You wrote, he read. You noticed he was flying through pages at an insane speed.
Curiosity got the better of you.
“How are you reading so fast?” You blurted out.
He looked up. “I can read 20,000 words a minute.”
Your eyes widened. “Are you lying?”
He laughed. “No. I uh… I have an IQ of 187, so I think that helps a lot with my reading abilities.”
“That’s like a superpower.”
“Some would say it’s the lamest one to have been given.” He joked, you shrugged. “Maybe. But I think it’s cool.”
And, honestly?
You were surprised by yourself.
A simple conversation. With a stranger.
A man, even.
ʚɞ
Over the next few months, you found yourself at the coffee shop at least three times a week. And almost every time, Spencer was there too.
At first, it felt like a coincidence, like an unspoken routine you both had fallen into without realizing. But eventually, he started waving you over when he spotted you, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips as he gestured to the empty seat across from him. And, recently, you had started doing the same for him.
You’d sit together, sometimes in silence, sometimes talking about what you were reading, new movies, or random events happening around town. It felt… easy.
“How’s journaling been?” Spencer asked as he took a sip of his coffee and looked at you.
You glanced up from your book. “Oh, it’s been really good. It actually helps a lot more than I thought it would.”
He nodded, thoughtful. “Yeah, it helped me a lot too.”
“You journal?”
He shrugged, shifting slightly in his seat. “I used to. Not as much anymore, but when I have the time, I try. I think it’s a good outlet, especially for people who struggle with intrusive thoughts, or high stress levels.”
“You think only people who struggle journal?” You questioned
“Not necessarily.” He said, tilting his head slightly. “I mean, anyone can journal. But research suggests that people who journal regularly are often those who need a way to process their thoughts. It can help regulate emotions by engaging the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for rational thinking. That’s why it’s often recommended for anxiety, PTSD, and even problem solving.”
You nodded slowly, letting his words sink in. “Yeah… I think it’s helped me a lot with my anxiety.”
You weren’t sure why you would say it, you never really talk about what you struggle with but somehow with Spencer it felt safe.
You looked up at him, Spencer’s eyes had softened, his expression shifting from analytical to something gentler. “That’s good.” He said sincerely. “Thank you for sharing that with me.”
You let out a small laugh, rubbing the back of your neck. “I think it’s obvious. I mean, I’m constantly fidgeting, can’t make eye contact, let alone hold a conversation with people.” You say as you look down at your hands
He shook his head. “You don’t seem that way with me.” His brows furrowed slightly.
“Well, yeah. Not anymore.” You admitted “When we first met and you asked to have a seat, I wanted so badly to say no, and even get up and leave.”
His mouth parted slightly before he quickly recovered. “Really?”
You nodded. “Yeah. But I had to let you because if I hadn’t, I would’ve felt like I lost that day, and definitely would’ve felt horrible about it. But… thankfully I did.”
For a moment, he just looked at you, processing your words. Then, the corners of his lips lifted into a small genuine smile. “I’m glad, glad that you let me sit with you.”
“I’m glad too.”
It felt strange, strange in a way that made your chest feel light and unfamiliar warmth settle in your stomach. Having someone new to talk to, someone who, despite barely knowing you, felt like they had been in your life forever.
Spencer made things easy. Talking to him didn’t feel like a struggle, like you had to overthink every word before you said it. He listened. He never made you feel awkward or unsure.
Somehow, being around him made you feel like maybe, just maybe, you were figuring yourself out.
Both of your coffees were nearly empty now, the melted ice clinking softly against the cup. It meant this little hangout, or whatever you can call it, was coming to an end. And you didn’t want it to.
Spencer shifted slightly in his seat, his fingers tapping lightly against his cup before he cleared his throat.
“Um, Y/n.” He said, voice softer than usual. You looked up at him, giving him a small, curious smile. “Yeah?”
He hesitated for half a second, then pushed his hair behind his ear, a habit you noticed. “There’s this old film playing at the theaters. It’s not far from here. I was wondering if you’d like to go?” He paused, glancing down at his hands before quickly adding “It’s in Russian, though, so if you’d like, I can translate it for you.”
“Russian?” You asked, raising an eyebrow.
He nodded, his lips twitching up slightly. “Yeah. If you don’t want to, that’s fine, I just- I thought it would be nice.” He said as he nervously rubbed the back of his neck.
You bit your lip, trying to hold back a smile. “I’ve never seen a Russian film before, but I do like the theaters. And if you’re offering to translate, I’d love to go.”
Spencer let out a breath, his shoulders relaxing like he had been holding it in without realizing. “Yeah?” His voice was lighter, hopeful.
You nodded. “Yeah.”
His lips parted, like he was about to say something else, but he just nodded quickly instead. “Alright. Um. I can pick you up? If you’re comfortable with that, of course.”
You could see the way he was watching you carefully, waiting for any sign of hesitation. But there wasn’t any. Not with him.
“No, yeah, I’m fine with that.” You said, a soft warmth settling in your chest.
Spencer’s fingers tapped against the table before he spoke again. “Can I-uh-can I have your number? Just so we can communicate better.”
You smiled, reaching for your phone. “Yeah.”
ʚɞ
Spencer arrived at exactly 8:00 p.m, right on time. When you opened the door, he stood there with his hands in his pockets, rocking slightly on his heels before offering a small, shy smile.
“Hi.” He said softly
“Hi.” You echoed, feeling your pulse quicken.
You both walk towards his car, and to your surprise he opened the door for you. It was a small gesture, but it made something warm settle in your chest.
Was he just being polite, or did it mean something more? You didn’t want to overthink it, didn’t want to confuse kindness for something else.
At the theaters, Spencer insisted on paying for your ticket. When you offered to cover snacks instead, he shook his head. “No, really, it’s fine.” He said, handing over his card before you could argue.
“Okay, well, now we have to go somewhere else after this. My treat.” You said, crossing your arms.
He tilted his head, considering for a moment. “We could get ice cream after?” He suggested.
You smiled. “That sounds nice.”
As the movie started, Spencer leaned in slightly, quietly translating the dialogue for you. At first, it was just a whisper here and there, but soon he got really into it, his voice subtly changing to mimic different characters, his hands gesturing slightly as he explained a scene.
You let out a small laugh.
“What?” He asked, turning to you with a small smile.
You shrugged, grinning. “You’re so good at translating. And getting into character, it’s honestly amazing.”
His expression shifted, something like pride flashing in his eyes before he looked down for a second, almost bashful. “Oh. Thank you.” He said, meeting your gaze again.
You hadn’t realized how close the two of you had leaned in until the moment. His hazel eyes held yours, the sounds of the movie fading into the background. Your breath hitched, and you quickly shifted in your seat, breaking the moment.
Spencer cleared his throat softly before returning to translating, but you could tell he’d noticed it too.
When the movie ended, you tossed the empty popcorn bucket and drinks into the trash bin. “So how’d you like the movie?” Spencer asked as you both walked towards the exit.
“It was really good, I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did.” You truthfully answered.
Spencer smiled, as he opened the door for you to exit the building. “They play foreign films here once a month. I’d be happy to come with you again. We could watch together.”
“I’d love that, it’ll be really fun.”
“Yeah.” He nodded. “I love films, and translating stuff.”
“I could tell.” You teased, giggling softly.
He glanced at you, something hesitant in his expression. “Still up for that ice cream?”
“Are you?” You asked. “If you don’t want to, it’s okay.”
“No-no I want to.” He assured you quickly. “I just wasn’t sure if you still wanted to.”
“I do.”
He nodded, a relieved smile tugging at his lips. “Perfect. I can leave the car parked, and we can walk to one?”
“That sounds good.”
As the two of you walked side by side down the sidewalk, you glanced up at him. “Do you usually go to these movies alone?”
He shrugged. “Yeah. Sometimes my friends join, but most times, it’s just me.”
That made you frown slightly. You didn’t understand how someone like him, someone so interesting, so kind, could go alone so often.
“Well, now you won’t have to.” You said looking up at him. He turned his head to you, a flicker of something soft in his expression. His stomach fluttered at your words.
As you both walked, your hand brushed against his. Instinctively, you pulled it back, quickly intertwining your fingers together in front of you. “Sorry.” You murmured.
Spencer shook his head. “No, it’s fine.”
You nodded, slowly letting your hands fall back to your sides. He noticed the way you kept fidgeting.
“You don’t have to be nervous.” He said.
You blinked. “Hmm?”
He glanced at you, his brows slightly furrowed in thought. “I can tell you’re nervous.”
Your stomach tightened slightly. “How?”
“Little things.” He said simply. “Like biting your lip, looking around a lot, touching the hem of your shirt.” He pointed out each thing, and you hadn’t even realized you were doing them.
“Oh.” You laughed softly, a little embarrassed. “I just- I don’t know. This is the first time I’ve ever gone out with someone who isn’t my friend.”
Spencer tilted his head, his lips twitching up slightly. “Oh? I thought we were friends.” He teased.
Your eyes widened slightly. “No-no, we are friends! I just meant my other friends.” You rushed to explain.
He chuckled. “I know what you meant. It’s okay.”
Then, he stopped walking.
You took a few more steps before realizing and turned to face him. “What?”
He shook his head, his gaze fixed on you with something unreadable.
You frowned. “What?” You asked again, playfully nudging his shoulder.
Spencer let out a small laugh, but then his expression grew more serious. “I like hanging out with you.” He admitted. His voice was quieter now, more thoughtful.
“And I don’t want to scare you, but… the little time we’ve spent together, at the café, and now today watching this movie, it’s made me just want to be around you more.”
Your breath caught in your throat. No one has ever said something like that to you before.
Your heart pounded as you swallowed, suddenly unsure of what to say. “Oh. That’s…nice.”
Spencer’s lips pressed together, and you could tell he was waiting for something more, something deeper. And you wanted to say more, you really did. But fear gripped you.
“Spencer, I-i feel a lot of things right now.” You admit, your voice barely above a whisper. “I feel nervous, scared, excited, happy- I can really go on. But I’ve never had a male friend before, never been in a relationship, and what am I saying? I could be misinterpreting this whole situation, you meant as a friend right? Like- you don’t mean romantically want to be around me more?” You were rambling, your words spilling out before you could stop them.
Your face was flushed, ears burning.
Spencer took a small step closer.
Your breath hitched.
“I’d like to get to know you better.” He said carefully, his voice steady. “And… see where we go.”
His hand found your elbow, gently squeezing it, his touch was warm and reassuring.
Your lips parted slightly. “Really? With me?”
It felt unreal.
Unreal that anyone could possibly see you in a romantic way, no one ever has.
Spencer nodded “With you.”
You exhaled, your heart racing. “I’ve never, I’ve never been in a situation like this. No ones ever wanted something with me before.”
“Well…I do.” He gave you a small, soft smile.
Your hands trembled slightly as you rubbed your face. Your chest felt tight, and your mind raced with thoughts you couldn’t untangle.
“Spencer, you don’t understand.” You whispered, your voice barely holding steady. “I don’t know how to be with someone. I don’t know what people do when they’re getting to know each other, I don’t- I don’t know.” Your words tumbled out, laced with panic, with doubt.
Spencer took another step closer to you, his expression soft but steady. “You do.” He said gently “We do it all the time. Every time we sit together in the café, every time we talk, every time we share something about ourselves, that’s us getting to know each other.”
You swallowed, looking at him, searching for some kind of reassurance in his face. He seemed so sure of what he was saying, so certain.
“But I don’t know what I’m doing.” You admitted, your voice cracking. “I could mess it up.”
Spencer shook his head, his eyes never leaving yours. “Y/n, I’ve never been in a relationship either.” His voice was soft but unwavering. “I don’t have all the answers, I know just as much as you do. But that’s okay. We can figure it out together.”
Your breath hitched as you stared at him. He meant it, every word. There was no hesitation, no doubt in his voice.
“All we have to do.” He continued “is keep doing what we’ve been doing. Spending time together, learning more about each other. And when we’re both ready, we’ll navigate whatever comes next. There’s no pressure, no expectations… just us.”
Something inside you shifted, something warm, something terrifying, something new.
You looked into his eyes, trying to believe in what he was saying. In him.
“Okay.” You whispered
A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips, his shoulders relaxing just slightly, as if he’d been waiting for that answer.
“Okay.” He echoed, as if sealing the moment between you.
For a few seconds, neither of you moved. The streetlights cast a soft glow around you, the distant hum of the city filling the silence. Then, without thinking, Spencer reached out, not hesitantly, not awkwardly, just gently, and let his fingers brush against yours.
It wasn’t a grand gesture. It wasn’t overwhelming. It was just enough. . .

DPxDC Multiverse Police
I've seen the idea that GIW is actually SCP foundation somewhere, and lately, I've been thinking a lot about Fenton Happy Ending, so I bring you this. Behold, GIW/SCP, Team Phantom, and Fentons are working all together, and the whole wide multiverse fears them.
So, a giant green Lazarus Pit that looks more like a vortex than an actual Pit randomly opens in, say, Ohio. Because I heard a lot of weird shit happens in Ohio. The world is worried, JL gets sent there, but they are not exactly sure of what to do with it. Nothing comes out of it, and, well, no one is volunteering to just jump inside it - Batman made everyone read his files on Lazarus Waters, and they are reasonably wary.
But then a thing appears literally out of thin air on top of it. It looks like a spaceship, kind of, but more sci-fi than what real spaceships look like. And before anyone says anything, a large green - Lazarus green - dome appears, effectively covering both the ship and the Pit and cutting the heroes off.
The heroes are Confused (tm). And worried. And no one has an idea of what the fuck is going on, for all they know it could be some kind of yet another alien invasion.
Then, two figures on the hoverboards - one read and one teal - come out of the ship, flying over the Pit. They are followed by drones, and they all look like they are... scanning the Pit? A few more people, wearing black visors and shiny white suits that look like they are packed with all kinds of tech, slide down on the ropes straight inside the Pit. It sure looks like they are very familiar with it and have a good idea of what they are doing, working as a team.
One of the figures on the hoverboard, the one in a teal suit, notices the heroes on the other side of the green dome. She - because both of them look feminine enough - slows down and flies down to the ground, landing in front of Superman and taking off her helmet. It reveals a rather young, no older than twenty years old girl with fiery red hair tied in a bun, with eyes the same color as her suit. She smiles at them.
"Hi, you must be the Justice League?" She asks politely, and as Superman gives her a nod just out of surprise at her friendly attitude, she touches her ear, "Mom, this is DC sector universe. Pretty sure it's not a dimension we've been before, though." She turns back to Superman, "You don't recognize any of this, do you?"
Batman intervenes before Supes has the time to answer, "Who are you?"
The girl nods and taps her ear again, "Yeah, they definitely don't know us. So mark it as either an unfamiliar dimension or an unfamiliar timeline." Then she turns to Batman and smiles.
"You can call us interdimensional police. And since all the Batmans we ever encountered never believed us, I'm going to send you a copy of the files your other versions complied all together, so you can read and add more if you feel like it."
She touches her wrist computer, and, a few moments later, Batman's comm comes online with Oracle's voice:
"B, I'm getting a shit ton of files on... Multiverse Law Enforcement?.. out of nowhere. What's going on?"
Now, JL is baffled. Some of them - Flashes and Bats, for example - knew there was a whole wide multiverse going on, but to learn the multiverse has police? That's new.
Meanwhile, the redhead continues:
"The green thing behind me is a natural portal to the Infinite Realms, the dimension between dimensions. Which is really not what is supposed to be happening, so we are in the process of fixing it. It will take from ten minutes to a few hours, depending on what's on the other side, but the portal will be gone soon, and then I'll have to ask you some questions."
"Questions about what?" Asks Flash, and the girl waves her hand in the air.
"Oh, well, about the portals? If one so big is opening up, it means a few smaller ones had to exist in this dimension already. Our tech is not picking them up if they are smaller than a certain size, but you must have seen them before. I believe in the DC sector, you call them Lazarus Pits? We can take care of them later, too."
The second hoverboarder flies closer to them and revs her engine.
"Jazz, talk to them later, Tucker and Agents are done. Fentons are about to get Dannies down, so you need to either come up or leave the shield."
The girl - Jazz - looks surprised.
"Dan, too?"
"Yeah, it's the Toothy Jungle on the other side. They wanted to ask Ember, but, eh, what's her guitar gonna do to plants, even if they are sentient?" The red hoverboarder shrugs, and Jazz tilts her head, looking back to the heroes.
"I think I'll stay with them. You know it gets violent when Dan goes down, so people get antsy about us. I don't want to give the wrong impression."
The other girl huffs, but doesn't argue.
"Okay. Get out of the shield, then, and for Ancients sake, keep your comm open. Danny has an aneurysm every time you turn it off." With that, she flies away, back to the ship, and Jazz taps her hoverboard so it folds down into a hexagon shape no bigger than a backpack. Then, she steps through the shield, joining the JL on the other side of it.
"Are you not scared we might take you hostage?" Asks Wonder Woman just out of curiosity, and Jazz smiles pleasantly at her.
"Don't judge a girl by her looks. I don't want to brag, but I did fist fight Superman once and won."
----------
So basically, after Amity Park got sucked into Infinite Realms, the whole town just kind of collectively decided they like it there. And somehow they reached a happily ever after with both Danny's reveal to his parents and GIW, and then Clockwork showed up and was like, you guys want human food supply, running water and electricity, right? Well, I can do that, and so much more, you can be the ultimate perfect town. And for the price? You gonna go on adventures from time to time and fix the multiverse when shit hits the fan in various dimensions and universes. Doesn't that sound like fun?
And Amity Park, who's seen so much weird stuff over the years that it greatly affected their idea of common sense, goes yeah, that does sound fun! Let's go, people!
So here they are, appearing in different universes and doing damage control. They are, like, the superheroes for superheroes.
I'm probably going to write a part 2 to it, I want to show off Danny and Dan and Dani too. Halfas on the loose, JL is mildly concerned and kind of scared, and Jazz is just like yeah, that's just another regular Tuesday :)
I love Jazz being a badass, yes. Also, if you didn't get it, the other one on the hoverboard is Val, the drones are controlled by Tucker, and the people on the ropes are GIW agents.

D’you perchance have any thoughts on the morphological (for lack of a better word?) dire wolves that Colossal Biosciences just revealed to the public? 👀
Oh my god Aenocyon, you can't just ask someone why they're white!
"Morphological dire wolf" my ass. Which is coincidentally where Colossal pulled the white coats from…
Give me an example of a modern temperate/grassland predator that's white*, I'll wait. *Excluding white lions, which are an uncommon but resilient morph resulting from leucism.
I based my Aenocyon design off bushdogs and dholes. They are called Masked Wolves in Kindred's setting, because I enjoy a good pseudo hyena niche uvu-b
Extremely extremely long 'thoughts' below the cut lol c':
Preface: in this discussion the term "dire wolf" has too many meanings, as such I will be referring to them as follows:
Thrones' wolves: for the huge, white, fantasy animals from Game Of Thrones GMO wolves: for Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi, Colossal's creations, Canis lupus Aenocyon: for Aenocyon dirus, the true, extinct dire wolf known from fossils across North America
----
Part 1: That's not a dire wolf-
The first question everyone has been asking is "So, are dire wolves de extinct now?" The answer is an emphatic "NO!" from anyone with knowledge of genetics, palaeontology, or taxonomy.
Aenocyon dirus were actually not wolves, nor dogs, but a secret third thing.
They are canids, but last shared a common ancestor with grey wolves and their lineage some ~5.7 million years ago.
For context, this paper suggests a similar divergence time between genus Homo (humans, Neanderthals and co) and Pan (chimps and bonobos); animals that look and behave markedly differently from each other.
The genomes of Canis lupus and Aenocyon dirus being 99.5% similar may sound like a lot, but again, humans share 98.8% with chimps, and 99.7% with Neanderthals, and yet are very distinct from both.
Skeletally, behaviourally, in soft tissue, etc, you could tell any of the three apart; the same goes for Aenocyon and Canis members.
Additionally, Colossal made 20 changes in 14 genes.
The grey wolf genome has 2,447,000,000 base pairs. Does that maths seem a bit off to you?
That's not even enough to change a grey wolf into a domestic dog, let alone an ancient outgroup!
This would be akin to modifying a lion to have bigger teeth and saying you resurrected Smilodon fatalis.
Or editing a Asian Elephant genome so they retain their juvenile hair and calling it a Woolly Mammoth.
It's a bold-faced lie.
Beth Shapiro says "they look and act like dire wolves" but that, too, simply isn't true.
Visually, the GMO wolves simply aren't what Aenocyon would have looked like. It's what a Thrones' wolf looks like.
Hmmmmm, funny about that, seeing George R R Martin helped fund the 'dire wolf project'...
As with many fossil animals, we don't know much about Aenocyon's behaviour.
You can't say the GMO wolves (who are also still pups) act like Aenocyon, because that's based off nothing.
What we do know is Aenocyon were likely pack animals (from the sheer number found in La Brea Tarpits), and crunched more bones than modern wolves (from their many broken teeth).
Also, crucially, they had Wild Sex Lives (from the many, huge, broken and healed bacula... youch).
Colossal is also being colossally shady by: doubling down on their bs use of the outdated "morphological species definition", blatantly misleading the public with their use of the words 'cloning', 'dire wolves', and 'de extinction', and refusing to share their methods in a peer reviewed paper before going public with a clickbait headline.
Do not trust them with your Red wolves either. They're using coyote hybrids and considering what they deem 'close enough' for a dire wolf, I wouldn't put any money on the quality of their GMO red wolves either...
Also can I just say, whatever genes they modified to "make the skull larger" clearly didn't impact the lower jaw...
No, I'm not sorry for this image uvu-b (But for real look at that poor pup and his overbite jfc)
Part 2: -and if it was, that wouldn't be good either.
I fundamentally do not support de extinction.
No, not even for the Thylacine, not even for passenger pigeons, nor the dodo. Even my beloved Homotherium should be left in the past.
This might be an unexpected stance because I am, surprising no one, a big fan of extinct animals, megafauna and otherwise.
But the thing is, I'm an even bigger fan of actual, living animals.
The animal ethics of de extinction are dubious at best.
The surrogate dog mothers of the GMO wolves likely won't live good lives.
I wouldn't be surprised if they were destroyed after being used, because their bodies could contain feto microchimerisms and Colossal absolutely doesn't want their special wolf genome getting out.
I doubt the GMO wolves themselves will live a full life before they outgrow their hearts, like Ligers.
This would likely be the case for any modern animal genetically modified into megafauna; a body not adapted to deal with the increased size.
Purely conjecture, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi have vision/hearing issues from their white coats.
White coats in wolves are associated with hearing impairments, so the gene used for these animals was from domestic dogs. Meaning Colossal has created a very expensive wolfdog.
Again, what kind of life are these wolfdogs supposed to live? As awful pets for the rich? In a zoo? Released to pollute wild wolf genomes? (assuming they're fertile; I hope not)
Regardless, it's not looking good if they ever planned to have them be 'wild animals'
Even true clones (which the GMO wolves are not) tend to have health issues.
Celia the Pyrenean Ibex (bucardo) was cloned, but the clone died after 9 minutes from a deformed lung.
So in 2003, this made the bucardo the first species to go extinct twice, yippee?
There's also the problem of genetic diversity.
How many intact genomes do you have on hand?
For dire wolves the answer is Zero!
To my knowledge, we don't have the full genome coded from one individual, just Frankenstein-ed from many. Which is fine for sequencing the canine family tree's relatedness, but not for cloning.
The absolute minimum individuals to survive a genetic bottleneck is said to be 50 in larger species. Called the 50/500 rule, it states that 50 is enough to survive, but 500 is required to prevent genetic drift.
To which I say, good luck!
Even with well preserved permafrost species (such as woolly mammoths), you'll have a hard time finding 500 individuals with prefect genomes.
And then, where will you put them?
If you were to, somehow, make a breeding population, where are they going? A national park? A zoo? Is their old habitat still available to them?
In Aenocyon, the answer is simply "they don't have a niche anymore".
Unlike the Thylacine or Dodo, humans did not directly cause the extinction of Aenocyon dirus. And even if they had, it was 10,000 years ago!
Would making room for a de extinct species impact the habitat/niche of another species?
Regular grey wolves fill Aenocyon's role as a canine mesopredator, with Puma as the apex (alongside bears as an apex omnivore).
With the loss of megafauna to prey on, a de extinct predator would just compete with other, also endangered species.
Animals also change the environment they life in.
Mammoths will clear trees like modern elephants. This would recreate the Mammoth Steppe, but those trees making up the taiga and boreal forests are themselves crucial habitat.
Other species have moved in since the mammoths' extinction. Siberian tigers, lynx, muskoxen, brown bears, elk, moose, and so many others; many endangered.
Trees also prevent erosion, which is already happening at unprecedented rates due to agriculture and deforestation.
Crucially: What's to stop an extinct animal going the same way it went out last time?
Ask yourself this:
Would the average American appreciate "flocks of Passenger pigeons big enough to darken the sky and whiten ground with their guano"?
Would people suddenly be okay with lions in Europe eating their livestock, when they are champing the bit to shoot Iberian wolves again?
Would Tasmanians suddenly feel the same about the Thylacine, when farmers in Australia still happily kill dingoes and eagles for lamb predation? [citation, I am an enviro technician and have had farmers tell me they shoot Wedge-tails, knowing I'm a toothless lion to stop them.]
I doubt it
At what cost?
Are we going to find 50 thylacine genomes?
If so (doubtful), how much will cloning and/or modifying a relative into a thylacine cost? Now that x50?
Wouldn't that money be better spent on quoll reintroduction?
What about finding 50 gestational carriers for mammoths?
Are you going to use their closest relative; the already critically endangered Asian Elephant?
Wouldn't that time and effort on those elephant mothers be better used making more elephants?
And the social cost:
If extinction isn't forever, what's to incentivize lawmakers to fund conservation?
Really, it comes down to this:
Why bring back the dire wolf when we could put this money into protecting the Iberian and Red wolves?
Why bring back the thylacine when their cousin is dying of a transmissible cancer?
We've already seen the impacts of "extinction isn't forever anymore", with those in power already trying to cut funding to conservation, because you can "just bring them back".
But as we've seen time and time again: there is no Planet B. There is no De-Extinction, not really.
Maybe what was gone should stay gone, so we can focus on what we still have.

Crafting Compelling Morally Gray Characters: A Guide for Fiction Writers
In literature, there is often a clear distinction between good and evil. Heroes are portrayed as virtuous and villains as wicked. However, in recent years, there has been a rise in the popularity of morally gray characters - those who do not fit neatly into the categories of good or evil. These characters are complex, flawed, and often make decisions that challenge the reader's moral compass. In this guide, I'll help you explore the art of crafting compelling morally gray characters and how to make them stand out in your fiction writing.
What Are Morally Gray Characters?
Morally gray characters, also known as morally ambiguous characters, are those who do not conform to traditional notions of good or evil. They may have both positive and negative traits, and their actions may be motivated by a mix of good and bad intentions. These characters often blur the lines between right and wrong, making them more relatable and intriguing to readers.
Examples of Morally Gray Characters
Some well-known examples of morally gray characters include:
Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series: Initially portrayed as a villain, Snape's true motivations and actions are revealed to be more complex and morally ambiguous.
Jaime Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire series: Known for his arrogance and incestuous relationship with his sister, Jaime's character evolves throughout the series, showcasing his internal struggle between his duty and his personal desires.
Walter White from Breaking Bad: A high school chemistry teacher turned methamphetamine producer, Walter's character is constantly torn between his desire for power and his moral compass.
Why Are Morally Gray Characters Compelling?
Morally gray characters are compelling because they challenge the reader's perceptions of right and wrong. They are not easily categorized as heroes or villains, making them more relatable and human. These characters also add depth and complexity to a story, making it more interesting and thought-provoking.
The Power of Relatability
One of the main reasons morally gray characters are so compelling is because they are relatable. They are not perfect, and they make mistakes, just like real people. This makes them more human and allows readers to connect with them on a deeper level. When readers can see themselves in a character, it creates a stronger emotional connection to the story.
The Element of Surprise
Morally gray characters also add an element of surprise to a story. Their actions and decisions may not always align with what the reader expects, keeping them on the edge of their seat. This unpredictability makes the story more engaging and can lead to unexpected plot twists.
The Exploration of Morality
Morally gray characters also allow for a deeper exploration of morality in a story. By challenging traditional notions of good and evil, these characters force readers to question their own moral compass and consider the gray areas of morality. This can lead to thought-provoking discussions and a deeper understanding of complex moral issues.
How to Craft Morally Gray Characters
Crafting morally gray characters requires a delicate balance of positive and negative traits, as well as a deep understanding of their motivations and internal struggles. Here are some tips for creating compelling morally gray characters in your writing.
Give Them a Strong Motivation
Every character, regardless of their moral alignment, should have a strong motivation for their actions. For morally gray characters, this motivation should be complex and not easily defined as purely good or evil. It could be a desire for power, revenge, or even a sense of duty. This motivation will drive their decisions and actions throughout the story.
Show Their Flaws and Vulnerabilities
Morally gray characters are not perfect, and they should not be portrayed as such. They should have flaws and vulnerabilities that make them more relatable and human. These flaws could be physical, emotional, or moral, and they should play a role in the character's development and decisions.
Create Internal Conflict
One of the defining characteristics of morally gray characters is their internal conflict. They are torn between their good and bad tendencies, and this struggle should be evident in their thoughts and actions. This internal conflict adds depth to the character and makes them more relatable to readers.
Avoid Stereotypes
When crafting morally gray characters, it's important to avoid falling into stereotypes. These characters should not be one-dimensional or defined solely by their moral ambiguity. They should have unique personalities, backgrounds, and motivations that make them stand out as individuals.
Show Their Growth and Development
As with any well-written character, morally gray characters should experience growth and development throughout the story. They should learn from their mistakes and make decisions that challenge their moral compass. This growth and development will make them more dynamic and interesting to readers.
How to Make Morally Gray Characters Stand Out
With the rise in popularity of morally gray characters, it's important to make yours stand out in a sea of similar characters. Here are some tips for making your morally gray characters unique and memorable.
Give Them a Distinctive Voice
A character's voice is an essential part of their identity. It should be unique and reflective of their personality and motivations. For morally gray characters, their voice should reflect their internal conflict and the complexity of their moral alignment.
Create a Strong Backstory
A character's backstory can provide valuable insight into their motivations and actions. For morally gray characters, a strong backstory can help explain their moral ambiguity and add depth to their character. It can also create empathy and understanding for their decisions.
Use Foils to Highlight Their Morality
Foils are characters who contrast with the main character, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. For morally gray characters, foils can be used to showcase their moral ambiguity and challenge their beliefs. This can add depth to the character and create interesting dynamics between them and other characters.
Morally gray characters add depth, complexity, and relatability to a story. By challenging traditional notions of good and evil, these characters force readers to question their own moral compass and consider the gray areas of morality.

Signs of having DID that I ignored (note that these are not exclusively signs of DID but they were for me):
I don't have amnesia, that's just short term memory loss because I have ADHD!
I actually have a very good memory, I'm great at memorizing things (what do you mean that's not the same thing)
sure it may seem like my mood changes drastically but I've read online that's common in people with ADHD! it's hard for us to regulate our emotions!
so what if I have different preferences from time to time? that's normal right? like when your mood changes you may prefer different foods? what do you mean that's not the same as going from "I hate spicy foods" one day to "omg I LOVE spicy foods!" the next?
yeah okay I tend to space out in the middle of conversations then come back to and need you to remind me what you said for the past 10 seconds or so. that's just my ADHD inattentiveness. what do you mean that I only do this when stressed. what do you mean that's a form of dissociation.
speaking of dissociation, sure sometimes I feel like I'm watching myself say and do things without my own input but that's just because I was tired/stressed out
yeah sometimes I go on autopilot. my autopilot seems to have its own agenda sometimes though. weird.
sure I changed usernames a *few* times but isn't that pretty common? yeah I also wanted to change how I presented online and also my pronouns and stuff but again isn't it common for people to want to start over sometimes?
*making multiple accounts to play the same game because I play the game differently on different accounts and don't want to mess things up on one account*
oh yes, I'm genderfluid! I say that because my gender absolutely changes from moment to moment and sure it seems kinda tied to other aspects of myself like color preferences and energy levels and personality traits but I'm pretty sure that's just par for the course with genderfluidity?
"you're so different when you're around your parents vs when you're at school/work vs when you're hanging out with friends!" yeah that's called being a complex person we all have different masks we wear in different social situations and I'm no different even if it seems more extreme for me
"how was school/work/the hang-out/going to visit your parents?" I don't know I'm tired and have a giant headache and can't remember
"you said this to me the other day and it made me feel <x>" what????? I literally have no memory of this and that's so incredibly out of character for me wtf I would never do that I was probably just really stressed out and tired and had no filter on.
#did#dissociative identity disorder#actually did#actuallydid#did osdd#osddid#cdd#there's like. so much more but I have therapy right now and honestly this is a pretty good list#by green#by gray#by purple#putting this here in case other people may see this and relate and not feel as alone in their own journeys#we're going through a denial spike rn so it was helpful for us to write some of this stuff down

I recently saw a post about the baseball cap that Sisko wore in the pilot being for a Negro League team from Pittsburgh. Were details like that, and Sisko having African art decorating their quarters, instigated by the show runners, writing room, or Avery Brooks?
From my understanding, Mr. Brooks did have a lot of input on things like the decor in his quarters and may very well have picked out the Homestead Grays cap, though I have no specific knowledge of either. Avery definitely wanted to infuse Sisko with African and Black American culture, and the showrunners and department heads were very supportive of that.
FWIW Ira is a huge baseball fan (and so was Michael) so he may have had a hand in the cap, at least. Michael 100% named the "London Monarchs" after the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues.
Couldn't find Sisko wearing the Grays cap, so here it is on Kira.
More baseball caps! Sisko's Giants cap is almost certainly in honor of Willy Mays. Jake's Braves cap is probably a nod to Hank Aaron. That said, Ron Moore is a Giants fan (and I am too) and Rene Echevarria is a Braves fan.

mlist
Toeing open your front door, you sigh contentedly. It's the first evening this week that you have something to look forward to, and it's giddy, the feeling you get.
The texts you exchanged with Spencer pop up when you unlock your phone, and you smile dopily at it. The first was sent two hours ago:
SPENCER!: Just made it back to the office. We'll be here for a little while. Can I go over to your place afterward?
And then, ten minutes after the first one:
SPENCER!: I hope it's okay I asked that. I haven't seen you in a while.
You had texted him back immediately, giving him the go-ahead to meet you at your apartment when you got home, and now you can't wait, busying yourself with chores to make the time pass faster.
You're puttering around your kitchen when the three distinctive knocks that you've come to recognise as Spencer's ring out through the space. Opening the door, a smile creeps onto your face at the sight of him.
He's clearly frazzled, hair messy and shirt wrinkled, but he looks so soft. You can't help but reach up on your toes and press a kiss to his cheek, if only to see the flush rise up his neck as you do so.
"I missed you." You lead him into the living room, watching him set down his go bag and look down at you.
"I missed you too. I'm glad... Glad I could come see you tonight."
A thrill runs up your spine at the sight of him, standing in your home with no (okay, maybe a little) nerves. Every time you see him here it feels like the space bends around him, inviting him in until it feels like he belongs here.
Grabbing his hand, you pull him down to the couch, sitting next to him at a calculated distance. Not too far where you can't touch him, but still far enough that your brain won't be overwhelmed by his proximity.
You're little apprehensive, the first time you see Spencer after some time apart, wondering if the chemistry between you would fade after the distance. However, you're quickly proven wrong, conversation flowing so freely that it takes a couple hours for Spencer to remember what he wanted to do when he got here.
You've both shifted, your feet tucked up under you and your side pressed against his, when he finally remembers, straightening up against you.
"I have something for you!" You look up at him quizzically, confused at the suddenness of his comment. He holds your shoulders gently (albeit with quite a bit of blushing), angling you so that you're not leaning on him anymore. It allows him to stand up, rifling through his leather satchel until he finds it.
It's a small cuboid package, wrapped in brown paper. You shift on the couch, setting your feet on the floor so you can look at him as he settles next to you again.
"What is this?" At the sound of your words, he presses the package into your hands.
"When we finished the case, Elle showed me a bookstore near the precinct that we were at. I found some books I was looking for, and also..." He trails off, gesturing at the package in your lap. "Open it."
As you carefully unwrap the paper, you can see his hands fidgeting in his lap, sending a rush of affection through you.
"Spencer, you really didn't have to get me anything, I'm just happy you're- oh my god." The paper pulls apart to reveal a clothbound copy of Emma by Jane Austen, your favourite book of all time.
Running your hand over the beautiful book, you look up at him, eyes full of emotion.
"You got this for me?" He rubs the back of his neck sheepishly.
"You showed me your copy a few weeks ago, and I thought you'd maybe like a hardcover as well. I don't know, I just saw it and thought of you. Is this too much? I'm sorry if I'm coming on too strong-" He's cut off by you throwing your arms over his shoulders, tugging him into a hug that attempts to show him how much this means to you.
You've only been dating for a few months, and you'd mentioned the book only once, the first time he came over to your apartment. You can recall the delight in his eyes when he saw the well-worn paperback that sits in prime position in your bookshelf.
It's overwhelming, the thought that he remembered that detail for so long, that he thought of you when he was out for work, that he bought it for you when it wasn't an occasion or anything. You can only bury your face in his neck, murmuring words into his skin.
"It's perfect, Spencer, thank you. You're perfect. God, I missed you."
You can't see it this time, but the heat of his skin against yours tells you that he's blushing again, even as he brings his arms up to wrap around you.

Hiii!! Nalu request: What if nastu was a fashion designer or maybe an artist and Lucy is his model/muse!
His Muse
Summary: Natsu Dragneel is an artist. In his dreams, appears a woman. Notes: i took way too long to start writing on this, lol. thank u anon for giving me a chance to dabble with some AU stuff<3 enjoy! Ao3 - FF.net
***
Natsu Dragneel had a life. A good one, by most standards.
His days were a predictable rhythm: mornings spent staring at blank canvases, afternoons wrestling with half-formed ideas, and evenings spilling beers with Gray and Erza at their usual spot. He had friends who cared about him, a roof over his head, and a reputation as a decent artist who sometimes stumbled into brilliance. But beneath it all was the quiet hum of something missing.
It wasn’t an ache, not really. More like an emptiness that hovered just out of reach, shapeless and stubborn. He used to think it was Igneel, his father – the man who’d disappeared when Natsu was too young to understand why. Finding him should have filled that space. For a while, it did. They’d laughed, reconnected, and healed wounds that time had only scabbed over. But when the dust settled, that hum was still there, as persistent as ever.
He tried to ignore it. But some nights, when he sat in his studio surrounded by the ghosts of half-finished pieces, he wondered if he was just... incomplete.
The night the dream came, he wasn’t thinking about any of that. He’d been frustrated, staring at the same canvas for hours. The paintbrush felt foreign in his hand, the colors on his palette dull no matter how he mixed them. Even his signature reds, the fiery hues that used to blaze across his work, seemed muted. Finally, he’d thrown down his brush and collapsed into bed, letting the world dissolve as sleep took him.
The fire came first.
It roared to life around him, wild and untamed, swallowing the forest in a wave of heat and ash. Natsu didn’t run. There was no point. He crawled through the dirt, every muscle heavy, every breath a struggle. His body felt smaller than it should, fragile like a broken animal waiting for its end.
The flames were alive, ravenous, and they surrounded him on all sides. He closed his eyes, letting the heat press down on him, waiting for it to consume him. Then, through his eyelashes, he saw it.
The moon.
It hung impossibly large in the sky, pale and perfect, untouched by the smoke curling toward it. Its light was soft, yet it cut through the chaos with an authority that silenced everything else. He could feel it – steady and calm, as though it were watching him. Holding him. Suddenly, the fire didn’t matter. He stared up at the moon, and for a moment, he felt... peace.
When he woke, his heart was pounding. His sheets were damp with sweat, and the faint smell of smoke lingered in the air. He sat up, running a hand through his pink locks, but the image of the moon refused to fade. It stayed with him, vivid and haunting, like an ember burning in the back of his mind.
The dream came again the next night. And the night after that.
Each time, it was the same fire, the same searing heat. But the moon was always there, waiting. Watching. And with every dream, he found himself drawn to it more and more, its light pulling him from the flames like a lifeline.
Until the night he heard her voice.
It was soft, barely more than a whisper, but it cut through the crackle of the fire like the moonlight itself. He didn’t understand the words at first – nonsense syllables that carried no meaning – but her tone was unmistakable. It was calm and soothing, like she was trying to ease the weight pressing on his chest. He wanted to speak back, but the words wouldn’t come, vocal cords severed by the cutting, searing fire. All he could do was listen, letting her voice wash over him, until the flames seemed to fade into the background.
When he woke that morning, the ache in his chest felt sharper. Clearer. For the first time, he realized: the emptiness he’d carried all these years wasn’t just a part of him. It was a space waiting to be filled. And now, it had a voice.
----------
Natsu’s friends noticed the shift before he did.
“You look like crap,” Gray said one evening, throwing himself onto Natsu’s couch with all the grace of a collapsing tower. “Are you sleeping at all? You look like you’ve been wrestling with demons in your dreams or something.”
Natsu didn’t reply right away. He wasn’t sure how to explain it. He was sleeping, but it never felt like rest. Every time he closed his eyes, the fire returned, blazing brighter and hotter than before. Each time, the moon was waiting, its cool light a balm against the inferno. And now, there was her voice, threading through it all like a melody he couldn’t quite grasp.
“I’m fine,” Natsu muttered, brushing Gray off as he hunched over his easel. His hands worked without thought, dragging a palette knife across the canvas. The colors burned: searing reds, luminous yellows, shadows of blue-gray smoke. The shape was abstract, but he could feel her there, in the way the paint moved.
“You’re not fine,” Gray shot back. “You’ve barely been out of the house, and all you do is paint. What is this, your ‘tortured artist’ phase? At least drink some water or something.”
“I’m not tortured,” Natsu grumbled, glaring at him.
“You’re painting fire,” Gray pointed out, gesturing to the canvas. “Again. You know, I think we’ve got enough flames around here. Maybe paint a puppy or something for once.”
Natsu rolled his eyes, but he didn’t argue. Gray wasn’t wrong. The fire consumed every piece he worked on, spilling out in shapes that felt alive, almost restless. He couldn’t stop himself—it was as if the flames had seeped into his veins, demanding to be unleashed onto the canvas.
But it wasn’t just the fire. It was her.
At first, she was just a voice, murmuring through the smoke in his dreams. But as the nights went on, she became something more. The flames began to shift, their edges softening, and from them, her shape emerged. A silhouette at first, all curves and light, until one night she stepped fully into view.
Her hair was molten gold, cascading in wild waves that shimmered with the heat of the fire. Her skin glowed, almost translucent, as though she were made of the very light she walked through. Her eyes – dark, deep, infinite – held galaxies within them, stars swirling in an endless dance. She was beautiful in a way that defied reason, but it wasn’t her appearance that left him breathless. It was the way she looked at him.
Like she knew him.
“You’re not afraid anymore.”
Her voice was soft, almost a whisper, but it carried through the fire like it belonged to it, like the flames were hers to command.
Natsu blinked, his body still much too heavy in the heat, but her words cut through the weight like a cool breeze. He wasn’t afraid. The thought settled in his chest, quiet and certain, even though he didn’t understand why.
The woman stepped closer, her bare feet brushing over the flames as if they were solid ground. The fire softened where she moved, its roar dimming to a low hum, like it bent itself to her will.
“That’s good. You shouldn’t be,” she said, her lips curving in a faint smile. “The fire isn’t your enemy.”
The words struck him like an ember to the heart. He opened his mouth to speak, to ask what she meant, but no sound came. He didn’t need to ask. The answer was there, in the way the flames swirled around her, not hostile, but alive.
She stopped in front of him, so close he could see the way her golden hair shimmered with the heat. Her eyes caught his—dark and endless, full of stars.
“It’s you,” she said simply.
The words lingered in the air, sinking into him like they were meant to. The fire surged higher around them, crackling with energy that wasn’t threatening, but electric.
And then she was gone. The fire dissolved into darkness, her figure fading with it. Natsu woke with a sharp breath, his chest heaving as he stared at the ceiling. The room was quiet, but her words remained, seared into his thoughts.
‘The fire isn’t your enemy. It’s you.’ It wasn’t an answer. Not yet. But it was something. And for the first time in weeks, Natsu felt like he wasn’t drowning in the flames.
----------
A few nights later, Gray barged into Natsu’s apartment like a man on a mission.
“If you don’t see sunlight soon, you’re going to become one of your paintings,” he announced, kicking aside a pile of discarded sketches. “And I mean that literally. Like, one day we’ll find you trapped in a canvas somewhere, screaming for help.”
Natsu barely looked up from his work, a half-finished abstract piece where streaks of red and orange clawed up the canvas.
“I’m busy.”
“You’re coming to the club,” Gray declared, ignoring him completely. He grabbed Natsu’s jacket from the back of a chair and tossed it at him. “You need to get drunk, dance like the idiot you are, and maybe talk to someone who isn’t made of acrylics and gouache.”
Reluctantly, Natsu let himself be dragged out. He lingered by the door as Gray tossed him his jacket, muttering something about how it wasn’t worth the trouble. But Gray was already halfway down the hall, yelling over his shoulder, “Move it, ash-head. The world won’t wait for you to catch up.”
With a heavy sigh, Natsu followed.
The streets were crowded, alive with the nighttime buzz of the city. Neon signs flickered above storefronts, and the chatter of passing strangers blended into the rumble of distant traffic. Natsu shoved his hands deep into his pockets, trailing behind Gray, who strode ahead with his usual confidence. Overconfidence, if you asked Natsu.
The air was cool but carried the faint warmth of lingering summer, tinged with the smell of street food and smoke. Natsu glanced at the clusters of people outside bars and restaurants, their laughter spilling out into the night. It all felt distant, like it was happening on the other side of a glass wall.
“You’re gonna have fun,” Gray said, throwing a glance back at him. “You just don’t know it yet.”
“Doubt it,” Natsu muttered, kicking a stray bottle cap across the sidewalk.
“You’re impossible,” Gray groaned, rolling his eyes. But he didn’t slow down, weaving easily through the throngs of people as if he’d done this a thousand times before.
As they neared the club, the bass-heavy thrum of music grew louder, vibrating through the pavement beneath their feet. Bright lights flashed from the open doorway, illuminating a line of people waiting to get in. Gray walked right past them, nodding to the bouncer like they were old friends.
Natsu hesitated at the entrance, glancing back at the quiet street they’d left behind. It felt like a threshold, one he wasn’t sure he wanted to cross. But Gray grabbed his arm, tugging him inside with a determined grin.
“Come on,” Gray said over the noise, his voice almost drowned out by the music. “This is gonna be good for you. Trust me.”
“This is pointless,” he muttered.
“No,” Gray said sharply, “you hiding in your apartment and staring at a canvas for days is pointless. This? This is fun. You remember fun, right?”
Natsu didn’t answer, but he followed.
The club was packed, its bass-heavy music pulsing like a heartbeat. The air was thick with the smell of sweat and alcohol, the flashing lights cutting through the darkness like electric blades. Gray wasted no time throwing himself into the chaos, chatting up strangers and tossing back shots like he was trying to set a new personal record.
Natsu lingered by the bar, nursing a drink he barely tasted. He watched the crowd move as if through a haze, their bodies twisting and swaying to the beat. It was loud, frenetic, alive – but it felt like something happening to other people, not to him.
He felt detached, like he was watching the world through a fogged window. The fire in his chest, the one that burned so brightly in his dreams, felt dim and muted here. The rhythm of the music didn’t match the pulse of his own heartbeat. The lights, no matter how dazzling, couldn’t compare to the glow of the flames he longed for.
He found himself wishing he were back in bed, chasing the faint hope of seeing her again.
Gray reappeared suddenly, breaking his thoughts.
“You look miserable,” he said, handing Natsu another drink. “Seriously, you’ve got to loosen up. Do I need to hire someone to dance with you, or...?”
“I’m fine,” Natsu muttered, glaring at him.
Gray rolled his eyes and reached into his pocket, pulling out a small plastic bag.
“Okay, fine, but I’m not letting you be a buzzkill all night. Here.” He shoved a joint into Natsu’s hand. “Loke’s stash. Top-shelf. Trust me.”
Natsu hesitated, then raised an eyebrow at Gray.
“This is your grand solution?”
“It’s a solution,” Gray said with a shrug. “Stop overthinking and just do something for once.”
Sighing, Natsu took a hit. The smoke filled his lungs, heavy and acrid, and for a moment, he felt like the world tilted sideways. The music became a low hum in the back of his mind, the flashing lights smearing into streaks of color. Everything blurred at the edges, and he felt... lighter. Unmoored.
“Better?” Gray asked, grinning.
“Sure,” Natsu said, though his voice sounded far away.
“Let’s go outside.” Gray tugged him toward the exit, and Natsu didn’t resist.
The cool night air hit like a splash of water, sharp and invigorating after the heat and chaos of the club. The alley behind the building was quiet, save for the muffled thrum of music and the distant sounds of the city. Natsu found himself crouching by a pile of discarded cardboard, fumbling for a match.
The tiny flame sputtered to life, small and weak, but it held his attention completely. He struck another match, feeding the fire until it grew. The flicker of light reflected in his eyes, hypnotic, drawing him into its dance.
The world around him seemed to fade.
And then she appeared.
She stepped out of the flames as if they were a doorway, her figure forming from the light itself. Her hair was swept into a high side ponytail, her bangs framing her face in a way that felt modern, almost casual. She wore fitted clothes, dark and sleek, clinging to her like the fire had melted and shaped them.
Natsu froze.
She was different, but it was her. He knew it instantly – the way her eyes glimmered, dark and infinite, holding entire galaxies within them. The way the flames bent around her, as if she commanded their very existence. No, that might be the joint playing with him. Still; there she was.
“Are you two okay?” she asked, her voice smooth and quiet, but with a resonance that seemed to vibrate in Natsu’s chest.
Gray blinked, glancing between Natsu and the woman.
“Uh, yeah, we’re fine,” he said awkwardly. Was he missing a shirt?
But Natsu couldn’t speak. His breath caught in his throat as he stared at her, his mind struggling to process what he was seeing. It wasn’t possible. It couldn’t be possible.
And yet, here she was.
It was her.
----------
Natsu couldn’t get the image of her out of his head.
Even as he lay sprawled across Gray’s couch the next morning, staring at the ceiling with a pounding headache and the vague taste of ash in his mouth, her eyes haunted him. Dark and shimmering, like the night sky itself. The memory of her voice – smooth, calm, and impossibly real – echoed in his thoughts. Gray shuffled into the living room, yawning and scratching his head. He looked like shit. Natsu wanted to claw his own eyes out at the sight. Though, at least he was wearing clothes.
“You’re alive. That’s a good sign.”
“Barely,” Natsu muttered, dragging himself upright.
Gray tossed him a bottle of water. “You were acting weird last night. Even for you.”
Natsu didn’t respond. What could he say? Oh, by the way, the woman from my dreams showed up in an alley last night, wearing fire and starlight. No. He wasn’t even sure it had happened. It felt real—too real—but his memory of the moment was hazy, blurred by smoke and exhaustion.
Gray raised an eyebrow as he sat down on the arm of the couch, his eyes scanning Natsu’s face.
"So, who was that girl you were talking to last night?” When Natsu didn’t immediately answer, Gray clarified. “The blonde chick from the club? You’re thinking about her, aren’t you?"
Natsu froze for a split second, his pulse spiking. He hadn’t expected Gray to ask, though part of him had known it was coming. He’d been there after all; he’d seen Natsu’s reaction.
“I… don’t know,” Natsu said quickly, too quickly. He felt a strange twinge of guilt, but he couldn’t bring himself to explain it. Not yet. He shook his head quickly, grabbing the water and standing up. “It’s nothing. Just tired.”
Gray snorted. “Sure. Whatever you say.”
The walk back to his apartment felt heavier than usual, his mind spiraling as he replayed the night over and over again. He tried to convince himself it was just the high messing with him, but the memory of her was too sharp to ignore. When he unlocked the door and stepped inside, the scent of paint and turpentine greeted him like an old friend. His canvases stood in their usual places, leaning against the walls, half-finished and abandoned. But his eyes were immediately drawn to the center of the room.
She was there.
Sitting on his couch, her legs crossed delicately, as though she’d been waiting for hours. Her hair, now loose and cascading over her shoulders, caught the light from his window like recognisable strands of molten gold. She wasn’t wearing the fitted clothes from the alley – this time, her outfit was simple, a flowing dress that shimmered faintly with a light he couldn’t place.
“You,” Natsu said, his voice a breathless whisper.
She tilted her head, her lips curving into a soft smile. “Your landlord let me in.”
“My- what?” Natsu blinked, his thoughts tangling as he tried to piece together how she could possibly be here. In his apartment. In the flesh.
“I told him I was a friend,” she continued, standing and taking a step toward him. Her movements were fluid, almost otherworldly, like she was gliding rather than walking. She dangled a spare key on her pointer. “You should really make sure he doesn’t hand these out so easily.”
“Why...” He trailed off, shaking his head. “How are you here? What’s going on?”
“You invited me,” she said simply, her gaze steady.
“I- what?”
“At the club,” she added, amusement flickering in her eyes. “You gave me your address.”
Natsu’s face burned as the memory rushed back – a hastily scrawled note on the edge of a torn rolling paper, handed to her in a haze of smoke and desperation. “That wasn’t... I mean, I didn’t think-”
“You didn’t think I’d come,” she finished for him, her tone calm but teasing.
He stared at her, his mind racing. Everything about her felt unreal, yet here she was, standing in his apartment like she belonged there. He didn’t know what to say, what to do, but his hands itched to grab his brushes, to capture the way the light played off her skin, to bring her presence to life on canvas.
She stepped closer, stopping just a foot away. “Do you want me to leave?”
“No,” Natsu said quickly, the word escaping before he could stop it.
“I like your work,” she said, gesturing to the scattered canvases and sketches that filled the room. “I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s like... you paint fire, which is literally just a gas, but it feels… alive. Like it’s telling a story.”
Natsu blinked, her words sinking in slowly. She didn’t know. She had no idea she was the woman from his dreams, no clue that her face, her presence, was etched into every brushstroke.
“You like them?” he asked, his voice quieter than he intended.
She stood, walking over to a half-finished painting propped against the wall. Her fingers hovered just above the surface, careful not to touch the wet paint.
“Like isn’t the right word,” she said softly. “I think I’m in love with them.”
Something inside Natsu shifted. The emptiness he’d carried for so long, the weight of feeling like something was always missing, began to lift. It wasn’t gone entirely – he could still feel its edges – but it was quieter now, overshadowed by the warmth of her words and the way she seemed to see right through him.
“I’d like to paint you,” he said suddenly, the words tumbling out before he could stop them.
She turned to him, surprise flickering across her face. “Really?”
“Yeah,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck. “I mean... if you don’t mind. I think... I think I could make something amazing if you let me.”
She hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
“Okay. I’d like that.”
----------
For the next few hours, the room came alive. Natsu worked with a focus he hadn’t felt in months, his hands moving instinctively as he captured the way the light hit her hair, the way her smile seemed to brighten the space. She sat quietly, her posture relaxed, occasionally watching him with a curiosity that made his heart race.
When he finally stepped back from the canvas, his hands smudged with paint and his chest tight with anticipation, he turned to her.
“Well?” he asked, trying to keep his voice steady.
She stood and approached the painting, her eyes widening as she took it in.
“Is that… me? It’s beautiful,” she said after a long moment, her voice filled with awe. “You’ve captured something... something I didn’t even know was there.”
Natsu swallowed hard, his throat tight. He wanted to tell her everything – about the dreams, about the fire, about the way she’d filled a void he didn’t fully understand. But the words wouldn’t come.
Instead, he simply nodded.
“Thanks.”
She glanced at the clock, then back at him. “I should go,” she said reluctantly.
“Will I see you again?” he asked, the question spilling out before he could second-guess it.
She smiled, a soft, almost shy curve of her lips.
“If you want to.”
He nodded, his chest tightening as she walked toward the door. She paused briefly, looking back at him one last time.
“Your work... it’s amazing,” she said. “You, as a person, are amazing.”
And then she was gone, leaving Natsu standing in the middle of his studio, the air feeling lighter than it had in months. The door closed behind her, but the quiet she left in her wake lingered, wrapping itself around Natsu like a warm blanket. For a long moment, he stood there, listening to the stillness of the room. The humming of the fridge, the faint background noise of a bustling city outside. It was as if the space had shifted with her presence, and now, without her, it seemed like a different place altogether. Lighter. Brighter, even.
Eventually, Natsu made his way back to his chair, his eyes drifting to the canvas in front of him. The portrait. The portrait that now felt more like a memory than a creation. She had become something more than just an image in his mind or a figure in his dreams. She was real. He had touched her, spoken to her, shared moments with her – moments that had shifted everything he had thought he understood.
He sat back, his gaze lingering on the completed portrait, the woman before him as vivid as she had ever been. Every stroke of the brush had felt like an exploration of something deeply familiar, and in the spaces between the strokes, he had found the truth he’d been searching for. The fire that had once threatened to consume him had settled within him, no longer a danger, but a part of him.
Since that night, he hadn’t had the dreams—the wild, desperate fires that once roared through his mind. No more lost, hopeless wandering through flames. No more questions without answers. Sometimes, he wondered if the dreams had ever been real at all, or if they had simply been a prelude, leading him here, to this. But it didn’t matter. He no longer needed the validation of dreams to know she was meant for him.
----------
In the quiet moments, when he would lie beside her, his body pressed against hers in the cool light of the moon, it all became clear. Their connection. The way her touch felt like a promise. The way they fit together, as if they had always known each other in some cosmic sense.
Natsu closed his eyes, remembering how they had come together, bodies entwined, under the soft glow of moonlight. In those moments, the world outside ceased to exist. There was only the warmth of her skin, the rhythm of their breathing, and the gentle hum of something deeper. A bond neither of them had expected, but one they both understood now.
She had been sent to him by the universe itself. His soulmate. His muse.

The Third Best Afternoon Sunlight
Murtagh leaned back against Thorn’s side. He was still nowhere near where he wanted to be, but he could maintain his training regimen for a little longer than he had the day before. He could take a moment to catch his breath, then he felt more than well enough to continue. While he planned which exercises came next, the dragon wrapped his head around and pressed his nose to his chest.
“No,” Thorn said. “Don’t push yourself so hard.”
“I’m fine,” he said, scratching Thorn’s chin. “I’m having a good day, I should take advantage…”
“And if you do too much, then tomorrow will not be a good day.” Thorn nuzzled his chest and gave a low rumble of concern.
“You worry too much,” he said. Already, his heartbeat slowed. Maybe his shoulders were a little sore, but he felt none of the usual twinges or tension in his back that foretold pain. He could push through to continue. “I’ll be careful.”
“Every time you say that…” Thorn nudged him back against his side. Since waking up in Illeria, the dragon had become increasingly protective, but he could not begrudge Thorn this, even if it was frustrating.
“Alright,” he said, reaching over the dragon’s foreleg for a waterskin. “I’ll take a break. If I still feel good in the evening, I’ll continue.” Thorn huffed, but accepted the compromise.

xii - lucy gray baird, victor of the tenth hunger games
There are many tales about Lucy Gray Baird. Many a drunken civilian of Twelve will tell you anything about their first Victor. She killed twelve people to honor her district. She went mad after her Games and they keep her cooped up in the Capitol now, and that’s where she had disappeared to all those years before. She fell in love with a Capitol lad and they married in secret but were found out before they could run. She had admirers clinging onto her arm but her heart only belonged to one, which a jealous admirer found out about who then killed her lover. She killed herself above his dead body. Very few of these drunken tales are even slightly true. Some get close. No one had ever landed on the truth.

Love to see that fanfiction Coriolanus Snow and canon (TBOSAS compliant) Coriolanus Snow are entirely different people.
Fic Snow:
Cunning and extremely charismatic with adults listening to him
Constantly generating 300 IQ plans
Can be physically or sexually abusive to Lucy Gray
Everything turns out easy for him because he is just that awesome
Described as “cold and emotionless”
For some fics its very easy for him to move on from the events of 10th Hunger Games and fall in love with some Capitol raised spoiled girl. Or worse - a tribute/another Victor (…)
Meanwhile book canon:
Is a paranoid mess 90% of TBOSAS, has a hard time lying convincingly
His plans are heavily reliant on luck, lots of time he cannot think clearly because his head is a mess
No way would he ever enjoy physical torture instead of mentally eating everyone’s brains. Also doubt he enjoys intimate activities at all
Was a pawn in Dr Gaul’s games all while thinking he was in control, has deep rooted trauma built around multiple women in his life
More emotional than Sejanus who he thinks of as whiny and annoying (dude, look in the mirror)
Lucy Gray haunted him his entire life and he promised to never love again

Wow, you guys already regressed to bitching about Castlevania. Btw, they produced Castlevania: Awakening in the Moonlight stage musical by Takarazuka Revue in Japan, it also has Dracula and Lisa in it. Castlevania lives on and thriving!
Considered just leaving this alone, but I'll take it as a chance for clarification.
Rant Below the Cut
I do not hate Castlevania, Netflix version or game version or stage musical version or any other iteration in-between. What few clips I've skimmed of the show online have suggested that it's something that the animators and writers put real heart in, plus a healthy dose of gay vampires to garnish with. I will repeat myself in saying that I quite enjoy the bloodstained Beauty and the Beast/villainy born of love route as a trope. To my knowledge, Castled Vania Dracula x Lisa is a great example of the latter. Great. Cool.
My issue with Castlevania is the issue I have with an infinity of films and books and games going back nearly 130 years. And that is the use of the characters' names from Dracula like they're costumes. Call it a nitpick or a pet peeve or just something that hits the big literary bitch button, but I Do Not Like that even when creators have ostensibly made a story that I could enjoy for its own merit, they feel compelled to graft the Dracula cast's faces over entirely unrelated, antithetical characters and motivations, and spoil the overall experience for me, the Dracula the Novel enjoyer.
I don't begrudge other people for being chill about it or enjoying the stories that have come as a result. I can't talk shit and be the DON'T ENJOY THIS!!1! police when I openly enjoy the gratuitous hot mess that is Hellsing. I am not immune to bondage suit anime men or Crispin Freeman voice acting or nazis getting eaten. I am not throwing those stones in my glass house.
But I am standing on top of the glass house and hurling boulders at the creators who, whether they make something fantastic or mediocre or genuinely teeth-grindingly awful, keep passing the baton of 'If we add Dracula names to this it adds more legitimacy! No, I have not read the book and I never will, but I don't need to because I read a footnote in a wiki once, I saw a movie, I read a spinoff of a spinoff.' Over and over and over.
That is what upsets me. That is my bitching point. Not whether you or anyone else Likes a Thing. You are not Netflix. You are not Konami. You are not Hirano or Moore or Coppola or Newman or Besson or Moffat or Browning. What you enjoy does not matter to me and never will.
Go enjoy your musical and let me regress in peace.
#really the whole phenomenon of stapling public domain names over wildly OOC OCs is the crux of it#I know no amount of complaint or frustration will stop it#but that doesn't stop the frustration from nettling every time something like this comes up#the Wuthering Heights film's casting (and costuming dear god)#the Dorian Gray series getting the 'we're just bros~' treatment to no homo Dorian and Basil#Carmilla getting de-lesbianed or de-vampired or de-sympathized in every appearance#every Dracula story utterly refusing to let Dracula be his own self while erasing or rewriting the rest of the cast to be window-dressing#to big dickify the Count and alternately get ravished or emasculated/bastardified/killed off#if it were just a once in a while thing I could write all this stuff off as genuinely 'bold and subversive'#but it's not. it hasn't been since these books were first published. because from day one NOBODY has bothered to read and/or respect#the stories the authors put down; opting instead to make each successive spinoff or adaptation or cameo dedicated to watering everything#down into a homogenous anti-wave making (weirdly less progressive compared to the PRE-20TH CENTURY NOVELS) soup#so yeah#I'm gonna bitch

Anyone else remember that theory that said that Undertale was an in universe game made by Deltarune Asriel and Kris and their only point was “Deltarune is woke and Toriel has homophobic vibes so they probably wanna make a game to change her mind” backed up only by “Toriel probably hates Asgore for being gay for Rudy” “the computer in Asriel’s room references god of Hyperdeath” “Toriel is vaguely religious” and “Asriel is in college and they teach coding there usually and that might be his major maybe probably” or was that one a figment of my imagination
#I don’t remember if this was a chapter 1 or chapter 2 era theory#this theory was so stupid in retrospect#why would they make a game where Asgore kills 6 kids whilst trying to convince Toriel that hating Asgore was bad#is Asriel stupid?#and also why would Flowey exist and be there. just in general what business does he have existing#like I get why real life Flowey exists but if Asriel was making the game why would they do that even#most of his thing was killing everyone a lot which would not make sense for a game like this#also is Gaster canon and what would that even mean or do#and what’s with Chara what is that#honestly these games are a lot more interesting if you look at Undertale through the lense of a game trying to spread a message to Toriel#not that the theory is good but more that a lot of stuff becomes interesting considering Asriel would be writing about real people he knows#like Asgore kills a lot of people. I know he’s kind of morally gray and whatnot but writing that about your real life father is uhh#and all of the real life criminals are now pretty nice and debatably heroic figures#sans is exactly the same#wait how would asriel even know about Sans at this point#also Asriel would know weirdly a lot of real science like determination and the power it holds#Asriel under this theory would know so much he really shouldn’t l#deltarune#Deltarune theory

Unfortunately, only a few short years of not writing have left me struggling to gain back the skills I once had. I cannot write as anyone but myself and my spark of endless dialogue is a cooling ember. I feel almost, if you can pardon the vulgar word, impotent. I've done it before, I've astounded friends, family, teachers, classmates, writers much more practiced than myself. But for some reason, within the depression that took me, I lost it. I know that with some time and hopefully with the help of looking back at old writing, I will be able to regain it. But it's just.. so hard on me. It's all I'd known and all I had at one point, so to not have the ability as it once was is incredibly stressing. Apologies for the rant, I needed it out of my system.
