Crimson Rivers latest chapter got me imagining Barty and Rabastan as the little devil and angel on Regulus’ shoulders.

"Regulus," Rabastan says, his voice low, "don't."

"Regulus do," Barty counters gleefully. "That's your fiancé they're talking about. Fuck them up! Defend your man!"

"No, keep going, this shit is hilarious," Barty announces.

All Characters have been created with the prompts and description from @breaniebree ´s Story, ASC. At least for those of whom I had descriptions, for some, I had to improvise as there was no description of their looks.

Starting with the one and only, Tom Marvolo Riddle:

For him I had to improvise as I had no description of his looks in ASC, so I took a picture of the original Avery from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince as a prompt as well as this:

For her, the only Info I had, was that her brother had dark brown hair and blue eyes so I went with the same for her:

For him I had almost nothing as well only that in his older years he had a large belly, so I again took a prompt picture from the original Nott from the Slug Club with Riddle:

And for Selwyn I again had no information and had no idea what to use as he isn't in the movies, so I did something cause why not, and used this ancient and unflattering picture of myself as a prompt hahaha, and well, it definitely made me a lot better looking lol

1. the character everyone gets wrong

Err... all of them? I'm not even kidding. More on this here.

Bellatrix: fortunately there's been progress in the fandom, but for years everyone loved to describe her as an overly sexualized, crazy, shrieking mindless slave, when she's actually quite the opposite. She is sadistic, but not insane, she's passionate but not irrational (she is the only one who knew Snape was a traitor; to me, it's because of a peculiar mix of rationality and intuition that shows her to be actually quite intelligent). Nothing suggests her being promiscuous in the text and I would actually argue the opposite of her (why would she ever lower herself to sleep with someone who she deems her inferior - so basically everyone -, even just to satisfy mere physical desires? This post, to me, is Bella at her core).

Narcissa: this is canon Narcissa, all of you are perfectly entitled to your soft babygirl headcanons, of course, but then again you are perfectly entitled to be wrong <3 [also, shameless self-promo: x]

The blorboification continues for every single member of the Black family and I hate it so much you have no idea:

Andromeda: somehow described as a soft little girl who loved her mean, mean sisters so much and had to run away? Bitch stood up to seven centuries of tradition, and abandoned her sisters and parents, to marry a boy she had fallen in love with maybe two years prior (we know this based on Tonks' age). Good for her, but as I have said previously, both Narcissa and Andromeda (and Sirius, really) strike me as a bit selfish. The one with the romantic attachment to the idea of her family, the child most like Walburga, is Bellatrix.

But this is nothing, NOTHING, compared to what this fandom does to Regulus and Sirius.

Regulus: canonically a Voldemort fanboy, with newspaper clippings of him everywhere, and a blood supremacist. Sirius says it better than anyone: Reggie is soft. But not in the way the fandom believes, nope. He's just a coward who, much like Draco years later, was super excited to be like Bellatrix (Lucius) until he realized what killing really meant, what fighting a war really was, and most importantly because Voldemort touched him personally (Kreacher, whom he loved). Voldemort was probably a little more deranged than he had been at the beginning of the First War, and someone that had inherited the Black pride/haughtiness probably didn't like being branded like cattle and treated like a slave, on top of everything else.

Sirius: fanon Sirius is basically another character. Canon!Sirius is: tall, canonically incredibly handsome, quite masculine (in an explicit and toxic way, especially as a teenager in the fucking 1970s - the skirt-wearing, feminist one-liners spouting version of Sirius is something I just cannot get behind), a dick, a bit classist ((don't come @ me with your "oh, but what about Moony?!" because a) we don't know Remus' wealth when Lyall and Hope were still alive, we only know he can't get a job as an adult because of his condition and b) Remus is Sirius' exception, in the same way Lily is Snape's when he calls her a Mudblood - everyone else is in his eyes)), brave to the point of recklessness, quite cruel, funny, witty, magically talented, loyal to a fault, extremely charismatic and everything else outlined here. For the same reasons, I'll say Remus too.

Don't even get me started on Severus Snape. Other people have spoken on this better than I could ever. At least here on Tumblr, though, it seems to me that things are getting a little better after years of absolutely bizarre takes. Or maybe I've blocked all of the idiots idk.

Dumbledore. More on this here and maybe I'll outline my ideas better in a future post.

Also: I do not accept any characterization of Evan Rosier, Barty Crouch jr, Reggie, and Rabastan Lestrange as anything less than violent blood supremacists. Yes, they can be nuanced and gay (and only for each other might I add), but these people are the KKK (metaphorically, of course, because I hate comparing real-world tragedies to completely fictional ones, but still).

Lucius: a complete dick, but definitely not abusive. The man couldn't raise a hand to Draco if the Dark Lord threatened to kill him over it.

Speaking of which: my darling Lord Voldemort. Not much to say about him really because I know that some people do write him in a very interesting way (and I am open to interpretations of his character even if they are different from how I see him - and I have a very fucking specific vision of him). The problem is that perhaps three (3) of these people write him with Bellatrix and that saddens me.

Now, I mostly read First Wizarding War stuff or Death Eater stuff so I can't really speak to many other characters, especially in Harry's generation, but anything other than cowardly Draco is not a good Draco characterization to me. Ron is hands-down the best one in the Golden Trio and Ron Weasley bashing is pathetic. Hermione has faults but is ultimately a strong, take-no-bullshit girl and I'll take that over basically any and all female YA protagonists. And Harry is sassiness personified, but with a heart of gold, and oh-so-caring. Which is also why I can't read dark!Harry for the life of me. It just makes me giggle.

Benjy was killed after Caradoc went missing. He wanted to look for him but was told by Dumbledore and Moody that it was too dangerous. He backed off at first until he got into an argument with Dorcas Meadowes after she asked him to join her in her mission to avenge her own girlfriend. When he refused she told him that he must've not loved Caradoc as much as she loved Marlene. Her words stuck with him and the next day he went out to try to find his boyfriend. He was killed the same day

Rabastan Lestrange & Billius Weasley

Billius Weasley = Brother to Arthur Weasley

Alexander Stabbins = mentioned in snapes worst memory / canonically was in The Marauders year at school

Ravenclaw academic rivals to lovers but they're not the top of the class. They just want to beat each other

Alenxander hated Quidditch but went to all of Hestias games (he said it was to keep an eye on here)

Alexander was always flirting with Hestia to put her off her game and it never worked

· loved Narcissa dearly, but was truly and insanely close with Bellatrix - when Bellatrix was old enough to get a room separate from her sisters, it ended up being Narcissa's - Meda and Bella kept a common bedroom until very late in their teens

· most of Andromeda's music and literature taste was inspired by her older sister

· met Ted Tonks for the first time on her second year of Hogwarts, he was two years older, but they almost instantly became friends

· started dating Ted on her fourth year at Hogwarts. she used to share everything exciting with Bellatrix. the day Ted asked her out was the day she started withholding news from her sister

· her family never knew about their relationship - well, Narcissa did to be fair, but she kept that knowledge to herself

· she was never seriously planning to elope with Ted, but one night soon after her 18th birthday she overheard her parents talking about her planned engagement to Rodolphus Lestrange - expressed her disagreement to Bellatrix, expecting support

· when Bellatrix said that their parents were being reasonable, Andromeda did not disagree. but the next night she ended up on Ted's doorstep with one suitcase and no way back

· very excited about muggle cars, learned to drive and got a licence when she lived with Ted's parents shortly after she eloped

· regrets loss of contact with her sisters, but would only admit it in a drunken late night painfully sincere kitchen conversation with her husband

· Nymphadora's name was supposed to be Bellatrix all along, then Andromeda found out about her sister being a Death Eater... the name choice suddenly changed

· loves muggle gadgets and devices, especially television, big fan of science fiction and fantasy movies

Something close to satisfaction settled in Rabastan's gut when he watched Regulus - sweet little Regulus Black, powerful and pretty and with eyes that were gorgeous when afraid - drop back to the ground unconscious.

The younger wizard had put up a good fight, providing just enough of a challenge to get Rabastan's blood pumping, but he was still far too hesitant with his spells to be a match for him.

He'd always been a skittish thing, Rabastan mused fondly. All that power meant nothing if one never used it, but he would break his boy of that foolish habit soon enough.

He slipped his wand back into his holster and crossed the distant between them with only a slight skip in his steps. It was a shame Regulus hadn't agreed to come along peacefully, and Rabastan hoped his Lord wasn't too upset at the delay.

He knelt next to Regulus, reaching out to tug his shoulder and roll him onto his back.

He only caught a glimpse of beautiful grey eyes snapping open before a wand touched his unprotected chest and sent him soaring backwards with a concussive bang.

Rabastan hit the wall hard, crumpling to the ground with a choked gasp. His lips curled, teeth bared, as he looked back over at his quarry.

Regulus was sitting up, wand pointed steadily at Rabastan, and his expression was twisted into something cold and furious. It was unlike anything Rabastan had seen on him before, and it made a part of him shiver in delight.

"Touch us again, asshole, and I'll put you six feet under," he hissed, and that was when Rabastan realised that this wasn't his Regulus in control.

It was the other one. The second personality that seemed to crop up more and more whenever Rabastan was around, keeping him from speaking to Regulus properly.

“It’s happening. Rabastan, wake up, it’s happening.”

Rabastan cracked a single eye open at the sound of his brother’s voice. Rodolphus was hovering above him, his broad smile lit by the murky moonlight that filtered through the minuscule cell window.

Rabastan had been hearing stories from him for years now. When the Dementors returned for their midnight rounds, Rodolphus’s delusions would leave him and he’d calm again.

Rabastan let his brother lift him up to a sitting position. Rodolphus was still chattering away in a low, excited voice, and at the sound of a loud clang he dashed forward to the bars of the tiny cell they shared. Rabastan watched him curiously.

“There’s no one there, Rodolphus,” he said calmly, though another loud sound made him falter. Dementors made no noises; there were other humans on the cell block.

Next came the shouting: a slow, primal howling that grew in volume until it gave way to laughing. Rabastan swallowed nervously and stood up on atrophied legs. “Rodolphus, what is—”

But Rodolphus was no longer responsive. He himself began to cry, a desperate wailing laugh as the rustling of cloaked figures approached.

Rabastan could have fainted. He saw men in masks rush past his cell door, wands out and gleefully blasting away at walls and doors. Smoke and rubble began to fill the aisle, the acridity stinging Rabastan’s eyes until he was crying nearly as much as his brother.

In the commotion, one of the figures—alerted by Rodolphus’s grasping arms and constant hollering—stopped at their door. Rabastan stared deeply into that mask, a slow panic coming over him.

The Dark Lord had sent for them.

He and Rodolphus had dreamed of this day, had been so certain of its arrival. The day when their master would rise again and their loyalty be fully rewarded.

“Expulso!”

There had been no warning. Rabastan and Rodolphus were both thrown off their feet as the door erupted in a blaze of blue haze. Rodolphus clambered inelegantly back to his feet immediately, but Rabastan stayed down, his ears ringing.

Through the popping and crackling, he heard a woman’s voice come through. Blinking furiously, he saw his brother’s wife, Bellatrix, scrambling up next to the Death Eater who had freed them. He’d not laid eyes on Bellatrix for years and she looked worse for wear, hair limp and tangled, eyes sunken in...her movements were uncoordinated and flailing, like a newborn fawn.

But she was laughing with a brightness that defied their confines. And Rodolphus joined in.

Rabastan did not want to go with them. He’d waited years for this day but now that it had arrived, the victory felt sour. Over a decade spent rotting in this place for a cause that had never truly been realized. What was to say he wouldn’t end up right back in here? That fierce energy and zealotry that had so possessed him in his youth was...burnt out.

He still couldn’t hear anything properly, but he could see Bellatrix’s mouth moving as she approached him, reaching down to grab him by the forearm.

Her touch burned; it felt as though the Dark Mark were being freshly reapplied. Rabastan gasped and fell back from her, completely limp. Rodolphus rushed up to them.

“...he….somet—I don—...sure he’ll...fine…”

Bellatrix nodded in response and knelt down next to Rabastan, peering deep into his eyes. Rabastan did his best to look past her, with the same soulless fragility he’d seen in the long-time prisoners, the ones who were inevitably dragged down the concrete hall, legs and arms limp, on their way to a final stay in the infirmary.

Rodolphus knelt down, as well, and shook Rabastan harshly by the shoulder. A pop. A slow, warm trickle out one of Rabastan’s ears. “It’s time to go.” Finally Rabastan could hear him.

Bellatrix was shaking her head. She hoisted Rodolphus back up and began pulling him from the cell. “Leave him for now. If this place doesn’t burn to the ground, we can come for him later.”

Rodolphus hesitated, giving Rabastan one last look before allowing himself to get swept off down the smoky hallway along with his wife.

Rabastan took a deep breath and sat up straighter, alert. He felt warm, and not just because part of the prison was assuredly on fire. He was starting to feel the effects of the Dementors’ absence. He wondered if they had been scared off or if they had joined the Dark Lord willingly. Either way, it allowed a small sense of happiness to creep back into him.

Rabastan leaned back against the slimy wall, inhaling smoke and grime and not caring. When the adrenaline wore off and they’d been away from the Dementors for longer, he wondered if his brother and Bellatrix would return again to try and rouse him. Or if the remains of the Ministry would get to him first.

Had the Ministry completely fallen? If so, then it may be a moot point. The fire might get him first.

But it didn’t matter. There was a calmness here, among the yelling and the clattering footsteps. The snapping and clanking of fallen metal was one of the first sounds Rabastan had heard fully since being incarcerated. With no Dementors near to muffle his senses with a blanket of fear and despair.

It was peaceful, being mindless. A few more people rushed past his cell, and some even looked in, but Rabastan was careful to feign a listlessness that approached death. It felt like falling asleep...for the first time in years.
