Spoilers for Gale’s romance below the cut

I, an Aroace, have finished BG3 having romanced Gale and taken the route to “fix him” (I.e. encourage him that he is enough as he is and doesn’t need godly power, that his value does not depend on his power or talents or usefulness to others.)

Yes you make out a little in his romance scenes. Yes he says that he has been intimate with mortals before Mystra, and was Mystra’s lover.

BUT.

It is never stated that you have sex with him.

At most, it is implied that you are physically intimate in some way, primarily the post-game where he asks you to marry him, you wake up together and you can beckon him to come back to bed.

Even then, even when it is implied, Gale’s romance is entirely chaste. For a game so horny, a game so ready to let you fuck so many people, a game that gives you power to make your party hang out at camp in their underwear or even naked…

Astarion and Shadowheart definitely have topless/nude scenes. Karlach and La’zell express sexual attraction. Wyll is entirely unknown to me. But Gale, despite being very upfront about his feelings in some key moments, does not have a nude or partially nude cutscene. A game that loves showing or describing the sex you have with NPCs, and Gale has none of it.

Furthermore, the moment that stands out the most as possibly showing sexual attraction, in Act 2 when he comments about reading a book that links the rush of battle with desires for other “stimulation”. He is having such thoughts, but even as he says he wants Tav, it seems to be about pleasure and stimulation more than flat out sexual attraction.

As we all know, willingness to engage in sex and the experience of sexual attraction are different. Gale expresses a very ace or demi sort of relationship with sex- for him, it’s about pleasurable stimulation with a beloved person.

Take this in contrast with Halsin. In my game, Halsin came onto my Tav in the last night before the final battle. He spoke of natural desires, of wanting skin on skin etc. similar to how La’zell expresses a desire for Tav’s body in Act 1 or Karlach “ride you till you see stars”. Halsin, La’zell, and Karlach, all clearly express sexual attraction. Astarion is, well, Astarion. I don’t know Wyll very well, but his first romance scene is a dance and he gets such puppy eyes when you reject him. There is none of these things in Gale’s route.

One last thing, the compliments Gale gives. Yes, this is a difficult thing to write because the appearance of Tav can vary wildly. But his compliments are centered around aesthetic attraction, not physical. “Beautiful” is one of his most common ones. Non-specific, wholistic, and aesthetic. It would be hard to write anything more specific with the Tav’s appearance being so variable. But the other NPCs still have doubtless sexual attraction.

So Gale is a romantic, so what? He could also be a “wait until marriage type”? False. He has not been married, but (at least implies that) he has had sex before.

But it could just be that his route is supposed to be the most romantic, and not all of the NPCs need to have equal levels of horny? Yes. Not all of the NPCs should be the same amount of horny. And the least horny, if they are this different, will always come across as ace-spec or aro-spec, if only by comparison (as it is in the real world).

Consider another detail as well: how the people closest to him are expected to react to him finding a relationship.

Both his BFF Tara and his mother apparently want him to get in a relationship. Tara is obvious, Gale speaks of Tara encouraging him to have more mortal friends after his relationship with Mystra ends. And Tara does at one point comment on Gale finding a mortal partner in-game. Later when Gale asks Tav to marry him, if you accept, he remarks how his mother will also be very pleased to hear the news.

This is a theme in his life. People pressuring him to find a relationship. This is also a very commonly shared experience for a-spec people of all kinds. Pressure from others to find someone. (The most toxic variation being “you haven’t met the right person yet”)

My own mother would be overjoyed if she heard I found someone to get married to, even though she knows I don’t want that. Sure, many parents are this way about their allo children as well, but that’s hardly talked about. Parents of a-spec people, whose children “finally get married” or “finally find someone” are specially invested in the outcome. Of course anyone’s supportive parent would be happy if their child got married to somebody they loved. But it’s noteworthy here, for some reason. As if his mother has, in the past, also given him some grief about it in a way that Tara does as well. If she hadn’t, why mention her at all?

Gale being pressured by those closest to him to get a relationship is thematically similar to the way ace-spec (and aro-spec) people get pressured by those closest to them. And the relationship he crafts is one based not on physical attraction, but on aesthetic attraction and romantic attraction. Gale shares physical forms of affection with his partners for the pleasurable stimulation of it. He does not exhibit the same lust or sexual attraction that the rest of the romanceable/fuckable NPCs do. All this to say that Gale is consistently sex-favorable, but does not experience sexual attraction in the same (allo) way that everyone else does. Therefore, he falls on the ace spectrum. Most likely ace or demi.

My personal ideas about the bachelor's and Bachelorette's sexualities (its ok if you don't feel the same. These, again, are just my feelings and thoughts):

Penny: a lesbian but doesn't know it. She believes in the nuclear family and grew up in a strict household. This has led her to believe that she is straight, despite her always making time for Maru and the farmer. She could marry a man and have kids, but that's more out of belief of what's right than actual love.

Maru: pan and proud of it. I could see her going to pride parades and bringing her partner.

Alex: he would either be straight or gay. I think it's all in how you read his conversations with the farmer tbh. You could take his comments as flirty jokes or as kind of mean to keep you away.

Harvey: straight. He just seems like your stereotypical anxious nerd I'm sorry.

Hayley: lesbian. 100% lesbian. Trying to convince herself she's straight and that overwhelming feeling she has for women is just deep friendship.

Elliot: bi all the way. He's too dramatic to be straight.

Leah: lesbian. She's an artist with a cabin and wears a braid and wears suspenders. I've never seen a straight woman wear suspenders on the reg.

Sebastian: straight or gay. I still can't figure it out.

Sam: straight. Skater gamer boy who loves his family and wants one of his own.

Emily: I honestly see her as pan but more on the aromantic spectrum. Like she's just super bubbly and happy and isn't actually looking for a relationship.

Abigail: bi but leans more towards women. This needs no explanation.

Shane: I've always seen him as straight ngl. But could also see him marrying someone he cherished deeply as a friend to keep them around so he could have a bit of happiness daily.

I don't know why, but I think about this a lot...

I go to a Girls' Night kind of tabletop gaming thing in the city every other weekend. The girl who runs it is cool as fuck, pretty chill about having the nonbinary/bisexual crowd welcomed.

But I swear, there was like...one off hand remark from someone else there that would've made my blood fucking boil if the timing had been worse.

One of us was bringing up old stories about an awkward old friendship with a high-key chaser cis dude who played Overwatch, and the second they mention that they fooled around with him sexually, some other absolute donkus just says "Eww!" and gets the appropriate paraphrased response from the storyteller of "Ok, what the fuck, I'm trying to tell a story, what the hell's your problem?"

Which got the unfortunately expected response of something stupid like "Nothing, it's just, I don't know why you'd want to have sex with an icky Overwatch-playing cis MAN..." or some bullshit.

And given one of my cis male (also bisexual and cool as fuck about polyamory) partners' history of playing Overwatch with his family, (cause y'know, who'd have thought you weren't an inherently evil person for being comfortable having a male-ID'd dick and playing a fucking video game with a funny gorilla with a gun? Crazy thought, right?)

I tried downplaying it and joking about how I'm more concerned about the chaser in question if they were still playing at Overwatch 2, but if that had hit with worse timing, I would have easily flown off the shits and gotten kicked out for throwing hands with the "Eww" girl in question who by the way, just DID NOT let up on this subject for like 20 minutes and kept interrupting the storytelling to interject about her low to mid-key vehement hatred of smelly cis men, it was so goddamn annoying.

Between the phrase "not all men" poisoning the well, people just...saying shit like "Some segregation is good, actually" (Actual fucking quote from some asshole regarding gendered bathrooms and locker rooms I saw in a public Discord server before, word for word in the quotes, I am not even fucking kidding), and all the "ugly, smelly, evil cis m-m-men" rhetoric fucking shit up for cis dudes who are just comfortable being dudes and sexually open enough to respect trans people just fine and putting an obnoxious stigma on trans people who just feel like consensually fucking whoever's up for it without people getting nosy about it.

I keep going out of my way to say "partner" and "they" in that gaming spot in reference to two of my partners who are blatantly cis men who happen to also be really extra cool about a bunch of weird sex shit I'm into. Maybe just let me say that in "lesbian safe" spaces without being a bitch about phrasing. Maybe just don't be weird about bi/pan/whateversexual people of fucked up ambiguous gender or anything else if they call someone their boyfriend who explicitly goes by he/him and isn't transgender.

Maybe acknowledge that you are not immune to propaganda, and any gender or sexuality differences from other people doesn't exempt you from being kind of a cunt.

People seem like they forget the original literal definition of queer on a disturbingly regular basis.

Arthur Pendragon is, in my head, demiromantic and bisexual... It sort of depends on the circumstances/episode. Arthur needs a very long time to really feel connections with people and only starts to consider love after he really gets to know them, hence his constant search for true love in the show. With Merlin I'm not entirely sure if he was attracted to him instantly, strangely enough feeling a connection from the moment they met, or if it takes him till the end of the series when Merlin confesses his magic and finally shows his true self to realise the depth of his feelings.

Merlin is, well... Bi Bi Bi. A disaster bi in fact. With a preference for sweaty men in metal boxes, he's not very peculiar. However, Merlin is a one person hyperfixation kind of guy. Most people are convinced that Merlin's gay.

Gwen: I feel like most people in BBC Merlin are bi and Gwen is no exception. Like Merlin, she prefers the hero type in metal uniforms. But she also had a thing for Morgana in the beginning.

Morgana: lesbian. I have never seen a woman so disinterested in men, I'm not surprised that they casted Katie McGrath in supergirl as supergirls love interest. I might settle for homoromantic and asexual. But definitly in love with Gwen in the very beginning.

Sir Leon, my beloved, the immortal, the one and only, the eternal suffering aro/ace. I don't have to explain this one. The only counter moment is the Lamia episode where Leon suddenly develops interest in women out of nowhere. My personal take is that anyone could be fallen under a Lamia's spell, this one just had a taste for men (and male presenting).

Sir Elian: once upon a time I clocked them as nonbinary and sadly that's as far as I thought into this character. Pretty sure he's aromantic. He/they pronouns. I dunno, I don't think Elian would conform to anything if given a choice. Aromantic too, I think. Like Leon, there is no interest there, but he does play around with Percival and Gwaine quite often, so I'd take that as allosexual.

I am excluding Gwaine because I think canon Gwaine is written as a straight oblivious fuckboy. Albeit a kind one XD fanon Gwaine is often poly/ pan... Or into apples. Lmao XD and I'm not sure about Percival because the man has a dead wife and kids.

Of course there aren't always clear signs that someone is gay which is why this is good rep actually (+he's married), but you asked me for proof in the show and all I see is that this man is a dad. That's his gender and his orientation and that's all I really need to know.

It never stops surprising me that reading comprehension levels aren't a thing anymore. It's always when I come across someone who reads the same thing I did that i have to wonder like did they not learn subtext in reading? It's like we have lost the art of comprehension here...

The reason I say that is because at no point has Tim M said that Buddie is dead or that it wasn't happening. he said not "RIGHT NOW". The words RIGHT NOW were right there, even in what they copied from the interview. (Right now, it could mean as little of a time frame as for when the interview was completed, but it would also mean not this season.) When in the history of the english language (which i will be the first admit is whack as heck) has right now ever meant never? The fact that he felt the need to say it and it was emphasized typically means something. What we don't know, but obviously, it's important. He also clearly states that Both Eddie and Buck are going to be exploring themselves. He makes a point to say that Eddie's journey isn't the same one and that they will be exploring it. Again, why mention that if it's off the table completely. Tim goes further and says he is letting the characters take them where they will. Nothing about that says no to me. It says give me some time to explore this and see where the actors are and how this pans out.

Tim, Oliver, Lou, and Ryan have all said in various ways that both actors that play Tommy and Marisol aren't sticking around long term. Sure something couldnt have changed but Even the leaks hint at that. So yeah, rewrites have probably happened (hoping they did a major one decreasing "Marisol's" time just because the actor has been disturbing in their hate.), but even if not right now, pretty much everyone has said our duo will get closer. (I mean i was like, how much closer you want them to get before they take the leap, but i also see that we kind of need a reset after the mess that was the end part of season six. Let's face it: the Eddie arc could honestly end up being fantastic. here you have someone who grew up with his past. Be a man's man; Chris needs a mother, Religious while not actively participating... Hispanic, ex-military, .. etc. etc. etc... and to be tossed for a loop when he finally realizes everything he has been trying to find and looking for has been there for 5 years? That amount of people that will related to that??? Fox would be silly to not explore it. We only see these type of stories for preteens and teens on tv and movies. omg sandra headcanons…

i feel like people headcanon her as being a “popular girl” in high school but i feel like this ignores the fact that she’s a theatre kid who’s very serious about it and thinks too much of herself… like realistically people would have HATED her. idk if you’ve watched glee but i think high school sandra is very rachel berry coded. i don’t think she really had that many friends because she spent all of her time dedicating herself to being an actress.

AWFUL driver. getting a lift with her is like getting in a death trap. she has road rage and tests god any time she is behind the wheel.

she loves the idea of baking but she consistently burns everything she tries to make. this frustrates her because she tries to follow the instructions perfectly and it still never comes out right. it’s a curse.

you know that i’ve got some thoughts about her family. personally i think she’s the youngest of 3-4 girls. i know you have the same headcanon as me of her mother being a failed actress and so pushing sandra to succeed where she couldn’t, but my addition to this is that she tried this with sandra’s sisters too but they went into more academic fields (eg medicine, law) and so that pressure kind of fell on sandra as like a “last resort” if you know what i mean. and then because of that sandra kinda became her mother’s favourite which caused a bit of tension with her sisters.

has glasses but hates wearing them. usually wears contacts instead but as she gets more comfortable with the drama society she starts to wear them more often.

4. I fully agree about Sandra and her mother pushing her dreams on her, with her sisters. Even though I do headcanon she only has one sister, but still in STEM, much to their mother's chagrin.

5. The glasses thing is so real!!! And it adds to a goes wrong of her glasses breaking and not having contacts and having to do shows kinda blind (so me coded) and running into people and props and sets.

6. I love the idea of her bi/pan awakening being Charlie's Angels, not only on brand but because of the meta pun/joke. Also so real of her, honestly.

7. OML, I just had the thought of her playing a duet with Jonathan when they were dating, but always falling behind/hitting the wrong note. And him politely correcting her (but it still getting on her nerves because it's Sandra and she has to be the best and he shouldn't be correcting her!) And then after she gets with Max, or just with any of her other friends (Annie or Vanessa), they'd play bad together and laugh at their mistakes, and she wouldn't get angry at herself because she'd be so focused on the other person.

Chuuya:

Orientation: |Gay| Exclusively likes men. He was self-conscious about it (possibly with some self-loathing) when he was younger but then he met Albatross and the Flags, and they assured him it was cool (half of them were queer anyway). Since then, he’s been secure in his identity, but keeps pretty quiet about it as he’s a very internally guarded person who likes to keep his personal life private. Still, he won’t compromise for others’ comfort and can be quite outspoken if somebody’s making unsavory remarks—regardless of if they’re directed at him or not.

*Chuuya has a soft spot for the younger queer kids in the mafia and tries to subtly wingman for them. He’s like a brother figure to a lot of them and is more than willing to talk with them about their identity or offer comfort, regardless of how close they might be. 🎁What is something they keep like: a souvenir, a keepsake, or a family heirloom; that means a lot to them? Why is it so important to them?

Hmmm. I think that once all is said and done and she's off doing Her Thing and makes it clear to her family that this is her life now, her dad would gift her with an old quiver of his. It's actually his dad's quiver, and it's fairly simple, but it harkens back to the days of when they were true Wood Elves—likely from back Aeranth at some point in their lineage. He would have given her the bow that goes with it, but the bows she uses are so much better and his girl deserves the best. But at least she can have a piece of them on her little adventures with her, holding the ammo that keeps her safe. And of course this means a lot to her. It's nothing fancy, which goes contrary to her need for pretty things, but the thought there is overwhelming. It's a blessing to go out into the world and live the life she's made for herself, while also a prayer to keep her safe in a way that her family still feels they have failed to do (which of course they are wrong).

Well, she pretty much does go everywhere now, doesn't she? What with the work she does for Aeranth. But I suppose she wishes she could spend more time on the shores and ocean. She is so familiar with the woods and forests now, but not so much the sea. She'd love to get a taste of it.

No one can touch her weapons. Only those she trusts most can handle them, and even then it makes her twitchy. This is definitely stemming from a fear of outsiders to her clan, on top of the idea that it leaves too much of an opportunity for sabotoge—even unintentional damage! But she fully believes that she will die or get seriously hurt if someone else handles her weapons. It'd need to go through rigorous tests first before she used them in battle after that. And even then she'd still be leery.

🦝What do they smell like?

Filed under: things I never consider when creating characters. But I imagine she smells kind of earthy. Fresh cut grass. Likely stemming from the grass and dirt stains on her armor after sparring.

Back home she definitely collects little trinkets from successful skirmishes. An arrowhead. A dagger. A broken blade. Things that remind her that she survived and is still here. She's a much more simple lady than Vaela. Pretty things don't tempt her.

She's always felt more fluid to me. Pan or bi. Definitely demi-sexual, though. She does not trust anyone to be intimate with her that she does not trust implicitly. She is a warrior and is keenly aware of how vulnerable sex makes a person. There is no desire where there isn't absolute trust for her.

She is a Star Wars lady, and a Mandalorian besides. There have undoubtedly been strange creatures she's come across that most would have found repulsive that she cooed over. Thinking of strills at the moment. It is absolutely not uncommon for Mandos to look at a disgusting creature and go "Oh! A baby!"

🦴Have they ever broken a bone or had any sort of major injuries before? If so, what was their ailment?

OH, MANY. MANY AILMENTS AND INJURIES. Her lekku are scarred to hell, which means those injuries were painful and near debilitating. Lekku are extremely sensitive and major damage to them can even mean death. But not my girl. She's built different. Her lekku have definitely endured a good bit of injury, but she's always managed to recover. She's been in countless battles and skirmishes and sparring sessions. She's cracked rips, broken wrists, and been stabbed and slashed. Ayala has so many scars from the life she's lived as a Mandalorian, but none in particular really stand out. The physical injuries are easy, if you ask her. It's the injuries she bears in her soul that really weigh her down the most.

🍷What is their drink of choice? Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic?

Ugh. Star Wars drinks. Anything with a kick. She isn't picky. Sometimes you need a stiff drink to knock you on your ass after a particularly rough day in the field or on the hunt. When she needs to stay sharp, however, she drinks the strongest caf she can get her hands on. The squad yells at her that she needs to drink more water. But what good is that gonna do? Caf has water in it. And now she's awake for another 12 hours. What's water gonna do other than make her need to pee? Vys'kydir absolutely has put her in a chokehold until she agrees to drain her canteen.

sexuality headcanon: bi or maybe pan. while he doesn’t really have a gender preference, he definitely has a type, and it’s people who kind of hate him. (kidding, but only kind of- i think since he’s adored by so many people he finds it very refreshing when people aren’t just awestruck by him and actually take the time to evaluate him as a person. even if that means they decide he’s kind of insufferable <3)

gender headcanon: he sees gender as a fun little toy for him to play with. he has no problem with being perceived as a man, but it’s not really how he identifies. i think he’s the type that doesn’t like labels, so if you asked him about his gender he’d probably say either something flirty but vague like “whatever pleases you most, my dear” or like, use a song to describe it. he’s fine with any pronouns and dresses in a chaotic combination of traditionally masculine and traditionally feminine clothing. all of it combines to make a gender that is very uniquely his own and is kind of impossible to put a label on anyway, which is exactly the point

a ship i have with said character: klapollo of course, but recently my mutuals have been putting me on to klavseb and klavquill and i really like those too!! (i’m also a klemapollo enjoyer but i know that’s an unpopular opinion so i don’t talk about it much)

a brotp i have with said character: klavier and trucy!!!! their dynamic in aa4 was so fun and sweet i think they deserve to paint their nails and talk about their crushes together. also, these ones aren’t present in canon but i think there’s a lot of fun potential for klavier&athena and klavier&franziska as platonic duos

a notp i have with said character: i don’t like klema very much, mostly because i feel like people who ship it always skew/simplify their personalities so that ema is just a tsundere and klavier is just a flirt, which i think does a huge disservice to both of them. admittedly though i feel like if it were done well it could actually be an interesting pairing (and one that has a lot of similarities to klapollo when you think about it) so. idk.

a random headcanon: i hc the gavin brothers as actually being german, so i like the idea that his given name is kantilen (which is what it is in the german translation) and klavier is a nickname/stage name that kind of ended up just becoming his name. i haven’t given this much thought yet but i think you could do some interesting things with names as a parallel to the overlap between his two professional careers and his personal life

Shouta and Hizashi take Harry to Pride, along with the rest of the group. They go as civilians, so they don’t have to deal with fans/press as much. The Weasley’s are so amazed at everything, but they are definitely having a good time. Hizashi does Harry’s makeup, and Shouta and Hizashi get Harry a flag almost as big as him. The Weasleys are Thrilled okay? Like Arthur is on some Twitter for Dads At Pride and has a gaggle of young adults/teens following him for the day because he gives off Kind Dad Energy. He doesn’t learn much about all the wonderful muggle things he’s seeing but he learns about queer history and each of their names and the pieces of their stories they are willing to share. He tells them he is proud of them and more than one of them cries. He cries. Everything is good. Molly is giving out mom hugs left and right to the people who ask and kind advise to others. She tells someone the best deals to look for if they’re trying to make food on the cheap, stops to help someone else mend a hole in their outfit with a travel sewing kit she takes with her every time she goes in the muggle world because it never hurts to be prepared, and gives so many cheek squishes and head pats that she loses count.

But the kids. The kids. Charlie finally learns that there’s a word for how he feels, and that there’s a whole community of people that won’t tell him he just hasn’t met the right person yet or that he’s just shy and he just really needs to put himself out there. He ends up with an ace flag wrapped around his shoulders and the biggest smile any of them have ever seen on his face. Bill for his part has always known he’s bi even if he didn’t know the exact word for it. He is a hit between the long hair and the earring and he 100% got Hizashi to at least put some eyeliner on him so the man is a knock out. They don’t know yet what the future holds for them but they think that whatever it is it won’t be as scary if they’re together. Hermione is there next to Nemuri both of them grinning as they look over the fans and Nemuri promises to teacher her how to fight with one (a hero needs more than one weapon after all. Can’t be a one trick pony). Viktor and Alek are covered in flags and Viktor is soaking up the chance to be completely anonymous. No one asking for autographs, just quality time with his friends and the man of his dreams. Lee is tagging along with Fed and George, all laughs with the third most extravagant makeup of their little group because besides Harry he was the only one who would sit still long enough for a full look. And Harry. Sweet Harry. He goes between hanging back with his parents to running around with his friends looking at all the cool stalls. He’s able to just be a teenager having the time of his life with his family. He meets a girl with spiral pigtails and the brightest grin that treats him like an old friend. He meets another girl, younger this time more Tenya’s age, with pink skin and black eyes with the aro flag on her cheek. He meets a boy with black hair and sharp teeth with a trans flag wrapped around his shoulders who calls his makeup manly. He meets so many wonderful people and the same people he has loved and love him and for a moment he can pretend that everything is going to be okay.

I need to rant about Star Wars making aroace-spec!Obi-Wan canon because this hellsite needs to know what that means to bi/pan-oriented aroaces.

To preface, I have been a huge Obi-Wan fan since long before I realized I myself was bi-oriented aroace.

His understanding of love, especially for Satine, is something that had always resonated with me, and I am sure people like me. I never understood why until I realized it was because I shared those views.

I doubt the initial intention of Satine’s character was to highlight this aspect of Obi-Wan’s, but regardless of what Dave Filoni and other writers involved intended, they created a story that was tailored to the aroace experience. A narrative that exalts and celebrates the nature of our love.

Obi-Wan and Satine are two people who loved each other dearly. We know that they spent a whole year with each other as teenagers. But the beauty of it is that the writers never went far into detail of the nature of their love. How much of it was romantic, sexual, or tertiary attraction.

We do know is that it was a deep love that haunted them ~20 years later. We know they both fantasize about abandoning their duties to be with each other. But in the end they put aside their feeling for each other to prioritize their duties. Not because they thought their love was childish or anything, but because they loved each other so much they couldn’t bear to stand in the way of the other’s dreams.

Obi-Wan always wanted to be a Jedi. As established in the High Republic books, a Jedi cannot prioritize the sake of one person over the rest of the galaxy. He, as a Jedi and according to the belief he had subscribed to all his life, could not put Satine over everyone else. Satine could never put him in a situation where he’d have to make that decision.

Satine had an equally grave, but higher profile responsibility. She needed to fix her broken people and lead Mandalore. That could never be possible if she had a Jedi or even a former-Jedi padawan at her side. Obi-Wan could never jeopardize her dream of a prosperous Mandalore.

And so they parted ways. Because they love each other so much, they want the other to be happy, even if it’s without each other. This is something so inherently aromantic: happiness without needing to be with another person.

And what makes it all the more authentic is how complicated their love is. Because being aromantic or asexual doesn’t make you loveless, just more complicated to express conventionally. They prioritized another commitment over their relationship, but that did not diminish their love for each other. We see it when Obi-Wan goes against the council’s orders and runs blindly and foolishly into a trap to rescue Satine. And when in her dying breath Satine professes she’s always loved him, and she always will. Even after 20 years, their love persists. They bickered and flirted constantly, they were gentle with each other, and they gazed at each other like no one else. It’s subtle yet purposeful, and they both understood the dynamic of their relationship. Once they were kids who fooled around, but now they’ve grown into the people they always hoped to become. They know that because of their decision they could never do that to each other. They could never be together. A mandalorian and a Jedi. But this, for them, is enough.

This is the relationship many aroaces, like myself dream about. Something that is just love. No obligation for the conventional rituals of a relationship. But being comfortable in how we embrace our love and attraction (or lack thereof). This kind of relationship hard to come by in entertainment, especially in huge franchises like Star War. It is messy and complex and just as beautiful as any conventional romantic or sexual relationship. And Star Wars still has yet to realize how enlightened it is for people like me.

I accept that back in the 70s, George Lucas never intended to make. I accept that in creating TCW and Satine, Dave Filoni and co. never meant to write an aroace-coded narrative. Yet the story and character of Obi-Wan Kenobi was one aroaces could immediately identify with. Because his understanding of love is not unrealistic or unattainable. It is real and natural. Valid and reasonable enough for them to anchor it to the iconic and beloved character of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
