having been on twitter myself and very recently left it, i would for sure agree that there's more timmy fans who come for tom, it escalated like mad over the past couple years. of course there's good timmy stans because i am friends with some of them, but it's so so strange how i think that among their fandom some have really made dunking on tom normal and acceptable. the proof of this can be seen when there's a hate tweet for tom made by a timmy stan, there are lots of likes on it from people within the timmy fandom. but on the flip side, when there's a rare tom fan hating on timmy, the tweet has less likes and more quote retweets calling them out or arguing in the comments. at least for toms fandom that seems to signal a less toxic fandom, i get the sense that most of the stans don't really care about the drama and just want to keep on vibing. i don't know what it is that those types of people who get so mean are big fans of timmy, it's certainly not a reflection on him since he's never encouraged that behavior. you're right destiny when you say he'd cringe if he knew what some of his fans say.
i don't know why timmy's fandom is like that, they shouldn't really be feeing insecure, but there's just a sect of his fans that really delight n dragging others down. it's really weird to me, i'm not sure if more of them are younger or cliqueish and that leads to the behavior or what. i'm glad that there's a really open discussion on this page about it bc it's one of the reasons i left twitter i was so done with the constant negativity on tom and also z from the normie dudebro side of twitter. there's a really nice supportive community on there for tz stans, but unfortunately it's just not the greatest for someone sensitive like me. something i've noticed, though, it is hard to stay away from twitter now!! i feel like i got so used to checking it that i almost have an 'itch' now that i'm off my account and deleted the app off my phone. i don't really want to call it an addiction but it feels pretty similar to it, i think the sense i'm getting from a lot of your anons is that people upset by twitter have got to step away from it. if you feel a compulsion to check it like i did, that's a big red flag that it would be a good idea to step away. another thing im glad of is tom speaking up about taking social media breaks. i truly cant imagine what it would be like to read such negative things about yourself or a loved one, so im glad he has the self awareness to step away. this is the longest anon message i've ever written but i love the thoughts you have on this kind of thing destiny, its good to see some honest talk about how fandoms can effect us. fandoms should be for fun so if yall arent having fun for sure reassess!
Thanks for your input Anon 😊
I honestly don't know much about Timmy's fandom tbh, so I can't really speak much on it, but just based on what some of you have said, it just seems to be a huge sense of insecurity on their end? 🤷🏾‍♀️
I mean, if you're solidly sure of your fave, and you think he's the best (or whatever), you won't feel the need to bring down OTHER actors. I keep saying this.
The fact that SOME (notice I said some) of his fans seem to need to put down Tom all the time just gives me the impression that they must view Tom as some kind of a threat. If they didn't, they wouldn't be behaving that way imo.🤷🏾‍♀️
That's my psychoanalysis for the day lol.
Re: Twitter...
Yea, if you're finding it difficult to quit ANYTHING, then technically it is an addiction.... whether you realize it or not. 👀 If you feel anxious or uneasy when you leave social media or delete the app after a few days, then yea, you're addicted lol 😆
You should be able to leave social media alone and feel completely FINE, and not feel like you're "missing out" on anything. You really should be able to live your life without being "plugged in" all the time. 👀
Jmho 🤷🏾‍♀️
I most definitely urge fans to just delete the app and take at least a week off and see how you feel! 🙏🏾 The great thing about this is that the longer you stay away from smthg, the less and less you will feel the urge to be on it.

Friendly Fighter Fodder (vol. 1)
Tumblr media
Please grab a warm beverage of your choice and gather round! Maddie and I want to share some of our thoughts on the ongoing BTS series, "Fighter." If this isn't your thing or you rather make up your own opinions or wait until the end to read this kind of thing, no worries! This is all just for fun because creating complex characters is one of our favorite parts of writing!
It's also important to note that there will be no spoilers here. Anything discussed will be based on information already available through the story. And with that being said...
It's time for some armchair psychoanalysis 🥳🥳🥳
Ready Jungkook?
Tumblr media
He's ready.
So it's pretty safe to say that Y/n and Taehyung did not have a healthy relationship. They were both lying to each other. Y/n didn't even give her real name. And at this time, still doesn't use her real name. When discussing the break-up, Maddie brought up a great point... "Their relationship was unhealthy, so why would their breakup be healthier? Like, did Val explain things clearly to him? No, not at all! But is her mind in a normal place at all? Is her mind even capable of working 'normally' after so much trauma? No. She's legitimately thinking: the person I am, the real me now is such a fucked up person that Taehyung cannot possibly ever love me and I won't sit around and beg him to because I don't deserve that [love]."
Personally, I feel really bad for Y/n. Outside of everything else she's been through, she never let herself grieve the relationship she had with Taehyung. She did genuinely care about him, she even says that she loved him, but rather than accepting that which she doesn't feel she deserves, it's easier to tell herself it's all a lie. Neither of them were truthful, but it doesn't change that they had something real. Yeah. But I also think her love of him was love for the version of herself that she was with him. So mourning for their relationship is a lot about mourning the life she can't have too.
Think about it this way, between 15-20 her life wasn't her own at all. This is the time when we do so much discovery about who we are and Y/n was literally just trying to survive. Now for the last two years, she's had "freedom" and she let herself believe her life could be "normal" only to find out what she's known deep inside all along...that it was only a facade. And now she's dealing with that realization while hiding in a home with people she doesn't know and whose profession she hates and has severe trauma-associated with. Yes, exactly and it isn't as if she's consciously dealing with all that. No, she's worried about killing Joaquin because she thinks that will magically make all her problems disappear. Right. And I think there are a lot of people believe that trauma recovery always makes a person behave in sympathetic ways when that's simply not true.
I think a really important point is that her mind is a real mess and she has coping mechanisms for quieting that. Mainly through exercise. Which is why she craves it. Her sense of self is a mess. But at the point in life where most people are trying to find that sense of self and being able to try new things and meet new people to form those pieces of identity, she was a prisoner, fighting for her life. So, if her personality appears a little erratic, well, of course it does. I think on some level she's trying to figure out what the best personality is to survive and get what she needs at any given moment, but she has no flipping idea what it is. What I find really interesting is that when she justifies her feelings against Taehyung, she says that she was lying about her past and he was lying about his present, which is why he was worse than her. But in a lot of ways, Taehyung is actually the same guy she dated. He just also happens to be a gangster. Meanwhile, Val is a persona in her mind that she created because she thinks "good things" happen to girls named "Val." So yeah, Taehyung is being a massive dick in a lot of ways and he is not respecting Y/n's space, but he's just acting how he's always acted. I mentioned it in comments before, but I'll say it here again. Y/n expressed her insecurity at being left. Y/n expressed her insecurity about Taehyung not wanting to have sex with her. Y/n feels really insecure about who she is and what she looks like and whether or not Taehyung will accept her as she is. So him being possessive was a way to reassure her. He was trying to do the right thing.
Even if his behavior mirrored Joaquin's in a lot of ways, I don't think Y/n consciously recognized that. Or at least not at first. She hasn't made relationships or gotten to know people on her own before, and here she is falling for this guy who treats her like a possession and no, it's not healthy but it's what she's used to.
Y/n isn't any less toxic than Taehyung is in this situation, and she doesn't know how to be.
I think, and I wanted to illustrate this with that discussion of dreams in today's chapter, that she still really only thinks of safety, not even necessarily of happiness. She hopes that maybe, when she's safe, then happiness will find a way. That something will be clear then. She just literally doesn't know what that could even look like.
Tumblr media
Oof. I think we'll stop there for now. Please look at this cozy picture of Tae as a token of my gratitude. Thank you for tuning in! We love interaction, so stop by any time!

Neon genesis Evangelion Analysis Chapter 23: Katsuragi Misato Part 2 Dear Shinji, this is my will.
Tumblr media
Misato: So you don't want to meet your dad?
Just like me
Let us start from the beginning. The scene in the first episode where Misato drives down to meet Shinji. Her first words to him were, "Sorry, I made you wait." This, I believe, is the first of many times their interactions will revolve around the theme of "Waiting." The line also contrasts with her final words to Shinji, "Let's continue when you get back."
Her cross is first brought to our attention through Shinji's eyes as Misato shields him from the blast of explosions from the Self-defense force's missiles used against Sakiel. Then, on their way to NERV, Shinji confides to her about his feelings towards Gendou. Misato empathizes, saying, "You're just like me," pointing to their commonalities.
She later consoles Shinji as he refuses to pilot Eva-01 and tells him to "Not run away from himself." At this point, she was already seeing herself reflected in Shinji, and those words were meant for herself as well.
After this point, Misato constantly finds herself reflected on Shinji. While it has a positive influence, like in episode 1, it also frequently caused Shinji to hurt. One criticism viewers lay on Misato is the sarcastic tone she sometimes takes when talking to Shinji about his actions. "You don't want to pilot the Eva? With that kind of determination…. What a pain!", Is one of the harsh words directed at Shinji. Even in episode 12, her cold reaction to Shinji's contemplation regarding Asuka is also, in its own way, infamous.
Yet, if we consider that she sees a lot of herself in Shinji, those lines come to represent her self-contempt rather than how she sees the fourteen-year-old. Misato was not really in the position to take care of teenagers if we consider her character flaws.
While such actions are worthy of criticism, there is room to empathize considering the traumas she had to endure, which has shaped the kind of "Adult" she became. As a young child, she was in the center of the Second Impact, and the psychological impact has led to her being mute for a few years. However, she seemed to have eventually recovered. Perhaps to compensate, we are told that she became an overly happy and talkative person. On top of this, she has studied hard and become a student at the Second-Tokyo city University. She met and began living with Kaji in the year 2005, at the age of twenty. According to Ritsuko, she even had a week-long sex marathon with Kaji, where neither of them left the house during the period.
To elaborate on her constant need for physical pleasure, we can start from the glimpse of her inner monologue we get during the instrumentality. We learn that it was one of the few things she had control over that made her feel alive when she was intimate with Kaji. Yet she breaks up with him because She saw a glimpse of her father reflected in him, although that was what got her attracted to him in the first place.
Tumblr media
What are you embarrassed about? You wanted the man you love to see you for who you were. NO!
I wonder about that. You wanted your father to see you for who you were. That's not true!
We can identify Misato as struggling with Electra Complex (Oedipus Complex for girls) regarding how she views her father. She then attempted to quench the thirst for affection her father failed to provide her from a different man who felt similar to him. This can be observed through Kaji and Shinji. Two people sharing the same character flaws as her father (Workaholic and being bad at human interaction) being the two people she opened herself up to (Mentally, emotionally, and sexually). Misato was hoping to compensate for the loss she suffered and recover from her past trauma using her relationship with these two.
Consciously or unconsciously, she likely understood this side of herself. She felt disgusted by herself, leading to her breaking up with Kaji while punishing and labeling herself as someone "Undeserving to love." While her relationship with Kaji was open and overtly described in the series, some of you might wonder how Shinji is involved in this process. Especially regarding the sexual aspect of this analysis.
We can definitively say that Misato and Shinji do not share a simple Guardianship relation. But the discussion about Misato and Shinji can wait for now. First, let us discuss Hyuga Makoto.
Hyuga is seen approaching Misato as more than just a direct superior at work (Especially after Kaji's death). "Only if it's with you (I don't mind dying from the base self-destructing)." It is a telling line that highlights Hyuga's feelings that he begins acting on in the latter part of the series. Turning him into a more dimensional character. While Misato seems to be aware of such advances, we never see her acting on it. Neither accepting nor rejecting him outright. Since this is at the low point of her emotional journey, Misato would have been okay with anyone. Thus, it makes us wonder if there could have been more intimacy between the two off-screen. I'd argue that Hyuga died a virgin (or at least that there was no sexual relationship between the two) based on Hyuga's fantasy during the instrumentality.
To bring our discussion back to Kaji, we are shown that he was the first man she trusted and gave her first intimacy to. At the same time, she was someone Kaji was able to trust and be vulnerable with. We never see either of them refer to each other by their names. While the reason is not depicted, we can make an educated guess and say that it stems from their determination to interact professionally. Without letting their (embarrassing) past hinder their work.
But perhaps it was destined that this guise was not meant to be. In episode 15, we see the two confide in each other. Misato laments about her father and her regret of not being a good lover for Kaji. Kaji embraces and accepts her of it. The last time they ever shared a bed, Kaji gives her his final present. His death led to Misato shedding many tears, but the present helped guide her to her next step. Before this point, we see her constantly drinking her favorite beer, but never after this event. All we see her drink from then on is canned coffee, Kaji's favorite drink. And now, two peoples' worth of "Will" lived on inside her. One from her father, the other from Kaji.
Tumblr media
Now, let's discuss the last "Male" in her life: Shinji. As mentioned earlier, Shinji was more than just a child under her care. Shinji's first introduction of Misato was through her photo that she sent him. It is a revealing photo of herself with arrows drawing attention to her breast. As a side note, the actual words in this image were written by Anno himself, and the lipstick mark was from one of the female Gainax staff.
From the photo, we can see that Misato wants Shinji to see her as more than a potential caretaker (as ethically should), but as someone of opposite gender and a "potential" love interest. Although, of course, we can brush it aside as a part of her quirky and fun-loving attitude. But the problem arises in the latter part of the series where this attitude crosses the line. The suspicion is confirmed in the official pamphlet's character introduction describing her as Shinji's family + co-worker + superior + "lover."
Tumblr media
Misato: Shinji, I'm going in. This is about all I can do for you right now.
Shinji: No!
The scene central to this discussion happens in episode 23 when she takes her seat next to Shinji, who is grieving the death of Second Rei on his bed. Although surface-level reading is, Misato wants to hold his hands to comfort him. If that is the case, the line "This is all I can do for you right now" is unnecessary. And not only that, but Shinji's rejection of this advance is also too strong to justify the conclusion of the surface level analysis. If anything comes to mind about an act that two grown-up adults do on the bed is "Sex."
Even if we try to give the benefit of the doubt and stay at the surface-level conclusion that is psychologically comfortable, this is Evangelion. It refuses psychological comfort. The film book released by Gainax has a note about this scene that says, "Misato is attempting to give Shinji her body." This is even alluded to in the shot right before the line, the head of the chair being where Shinji's Penis would be, and Misato coming to sit right on top of it.
Throughout the series, both Misato and Asuka approach Shinji as the "Other sex." it's natural for Asuka since they are the same age. However, it is unnatural to think of Misato (Who is twice his age) approaching Shinji sexually (neither should be accepted). So let's dive into how Misato might think about that. As early as episode 2, we are shown Misato yelling at Ritsuko through the phone, saying, "There is no way I will lay my hands on a boy!". This is perhaps foreshadowing what she will be doing in the later part of the series. So what changed in her throughout the series that she would end up trying to lay her hands on Shinji sexually. Did she genuinely believe that it was the only way she can console Shinji? Or perhaps there was a more selfish reason, to distract herself from the sadness of losing Kaji? Well, it could be both. There is a middle ground and an explanation that I prefer. Kaji was the only man she allowed herself to be vulnerable with. Because the best means of communication between the two have been sexual, she most likely believed this to be the most effective way to empathize and be vulnerable with Shinji.
We can see this as another manifestation of her Electra complex if we consider that Shinji also reminds her of her father.
As many of you are aware, Evangelion borrows concepts from psychology and is strongly influenced by Freudian psychoanalysis. Psychological terms are heavily used, especially in later episodes. The characters' internal conflicts are put into the spotlight in episodes 18, 19, and 20. All these episodes use terms from psychoanalysis for their title. Let me touch on each of them briefly over here. Episode 18's title is "Ambivalence." It refers to the coexistence of two conflicting emotions (Love and hate) regarding something and was coined by Eugen Bleuler in 1911. Freud borrowed this term in his analysis. His followers believed it to be an essential state that leads to the sadistic sub-phase of development. Episode 18 is also when the dummy-controlled Eva Unit-01 destroys Bardiel. Thus the title can also help us understand the Destrudo-led sadistic destruction of the dummy program.
Episode 19's title is "Introjection" and was a term heavily used by Freud. It is the unconscious adoption of the ideas or attitudes of others and a psychological defensive mechanism used by the ego to minimize anxiety. Almost every human being goes through this phase and is a part of healthy development as an individual. Episode 19 is when Shinji emits a strong dose of Destrudo and achieves a 400% synchronization rate. Here, we can try to explain the use of this term for the episode title in two ways. The first is to refer to the synchronization process of the pilot and the Evangelion. Secondly (and more specifically to the episode), to refer to Shinji becoming an individual that has become a part of Unit-01. Becoming a part of Unit-01 who have just absorbed the S2 engine and become as though god.
Last is episode 20, titled "Oral stage," and is the stage central to Freud's theory of Libido's development. Libido is the potential sexual energy, and Freud categorized the development into four distinct stages, starting with the oral stage. During this stage of development, the child clings onto its mother's breast for nourishment. This is also when the child begins to develop the ability to distinguish between themselves and the other. The significant happening of episode 20 is salvaging Shinji from Unit-01's Core, trying to bring Shinji back as an individual and away from the comfort of his mother. This can be seen to parallel the child leaving its mother's womb and coming to be born into its own person. And to add, they had to inject Libido into the Core to salvage him.
To return from our long detour, Evangelion is a series that heavily draws its conceptual inspiration from Psychology and Freudian psychoanalysis. What Freud posits, and perhaps most central to his scholarship, understands that desires created by both Libido and Destrudo, any forms of mental energy are irresistible and irrepressible. That is to say, if during one's development if any of such mental energies' expressions are disturbed and blocked off, it will results in the development of harmful coping mechanisms as an adult. In the case of Misato, her father's absence resulted in the absence of ways to healthily release her Libido. Therefore, Misato's inappropriate advance towards Shinji could manifested the harmful coping mechanism she developed as a child.
Losing her father as a child resulted in dysregulation in Libido. Losing Kaji, the only person she truly loved, left Masato broken. At this point, she had no other way to release her desires other than laying hands on a vulnerable child. When both Shinji and Penpen refused her the physical affection she needed, she could only find comfort in listening to Kaji's final voice message in repeat. Yet, she did not lose all possibility to recover. She was able to dry out her tears and began to follow the road her father once took. This leads her to analyze the evidence Kaji passes onto her and begins questioning the truth behind Rei. By the end, she manages to reach close enough to understand the "Truth." This is how she was able to explain to Shinji what was going on. She also experiences character growth through this process, becoming able to fully understand and empathize with the pain of others.
This is also when we see her starting to differ from Asuka. While both lost Kaji, whom they both loved, Misato comes to accept this loss and can carry herself as an adult. By the end, she was mature enough to send the grieving Shinji to Unit-01 during the End of Evangelion. While Misato has always convinced Shinji to get on the Eva, now, she was different from the past. Unlike in episode 4, where she emotionally manipulated Shinji into piloting Eva. Unlike episode 12, where she drew a hard line and coldly forced him. In EOE, she was no longer forcing Shinji out of her own hatred of the angels. All there was, was a grown adult's desire to convince a child that "Life is worth living." Even if she were to die during this process. All there was, was Misato's advice as an adult to the crying child. And it was this "will to live" that was passed on from Misato to Shinji.
Misato places her necklace on Shinji's hands and wraps his hands around it. Just as how she once held onto it while facing death in its face. Her father's memento. The love towards one's family. Hope for humanity. And all else that the cross symbolized. And the cross passed on from Misato to Shinji like the passing of the torch. To pass on the will to live. This was followed by a grown-up's kiss, just like how Kaji showed her, the perfect way to, perhaps the only way to fully communicate this will and pass it on. To want the other to continue living and hoping to live on as a part of their memory.
With the kiss, Misato stopped pretending to be Shinji's inept guardian.
She sent Shinji off, hoping that he could become a grown-up who can stand by himself.
Tumblr media
Misato: You will be alone from this point on. You need to choose for yourself.
Shinji: No. I can't.
Misato: Crying isn't going to solve anything, either!
Misato: You hate yourself, don't you? That's why you hurt others. Deep down, you know that you suffer more when you cause someone else pain than if you just let yourself get hurt. But Shinji, that was your decision, so that makes it a valid choice. That's what you wanted, so that makes it worthwhile, Stop lying to yourself, and realize that you do have options. Then accept the choices that you made.
Shinji: But you're not me. You don't understand!
Misato: So what if I'm not you?! That doesn't mean it's okay for you to give up! If you do, I'll NEVER forgive you as long as I live.
Misato: I'm not perfect either. I've made tons of stupid mistakes, and later, I regretted them. And I've done it over and over again. A cycle of hollow joy and vicious self-hatred. But even so, every time, I learned something about myself.
Please, Shinji. You've got to pilot Eva and settle this once and for all. Find out why you came here. Why you exist at all.
And when you've found your answers, come back to me. Promise me. See you soon.
Tumblr media
Kaji: Go and do what you can. No one will force that choice on you. Think for yourself and decide for yourself. GO and do what you must right now. So that you don't live to regret it.
Tumblr media
Misato: If I had known it would end like this, I would have changed the carpet as Asuka suggested.
Many discussions about Eva centered around her last words, the one about the Carpet and Asuka. Most of the theories have interpreted it with the spilled coffee during the instrumentality scene. I'll touch on the scenes shown in instrumentality in future chapters. But for the discussion here, note that the coffee was not spilled on the carpet during the instrumentality scenes. So I'd instead interpret this line separately from it. Personally, I believe this to be Misato, as an adult, regretting not being as kind and compassionate as she could have been to Asuka.
Unlike Shinji, who she managed to pass on her will and true feelings, she did not have that privilege with Asuka. Instead, she wallowed in her sadness, not looking out for Asuka, who was herself suffering from traumas and grief. The regret of not being a good guardian and not making the home comfortable for Asuka would have hit her as waves of regret crashed in as she laid bleeding cold on the floor of section R-20.
After Shinji, who she just sent off, Asuka, who she feels sorry for, After Penpen, who was always there for her, Kaji now crosses her mind. Was she waiting for his praise for passing on his will to Shinji?
As though she can see him, she stares at the sky. Right before the explosion, we see Rei standing over her. Perhaps it was Lilith who traveled through time.
And we come to the final scene of the EoE. Shinji and Asuka are lying down on the shore, staring at the sky. At this moment, we are reminded of Misato through the cross, now nailed to a wooden post. The cross has come to symbolize Misato's hope and dreams for the two children who will now be growing up into two adults. Will Misato be able to revert back to her human form by her soul desiring it? Nobody knows. But I don't think that matters. Because now, Shinji carries on her will.
Tumblr media
Let's continue when you get back.
Tumblr media
I'm back. Welcome back.
Welcome Shinji, this is your new home.
I'm back.
Welcome back!

asmr i psychoanalyze my favorite war criminal, aka calling out norman the essay
basically all of my thoughts on norman on one callout post because i care him (both manga and anime are discussed)
LINK TO RAY PSYCHOANALYSIS:  https://chaoticgaymess.tumblr.com/post/646749875570196480/ray-81194-the-long-explanation
Tumblr media
this is going to be ungodly long so here’s a keep reading, essay below the cut
((tw for suicidal ideation and self harm, brief discussion of eating disorders))
Disclaimer: no shipping is included here this is just about norman also they’re kids who call each other siblings
Thoughts: So you may be thinking, Rowan, why do you yell about the colorless war criminal so often? Well the answer lies in your honor the court hates to see a girlboss winning. Norman is a girlboss :) Yes norman is a tiny twink who can't lift a milk jug. And he is a girlboss :) Obviously I don't condone, um, eugenics and all, but that's not the point the point is that he satisfies my need for more characters like Levi motherfucking Calder from Unwind because I’m apparently an edgy 13 year old. Also all of his problems are violently things I can fix and I keep him around as a pet project because someone needs to give him a hug and slap him on the face
I diagnose him with things:
-pisces man :pensive:
-is he albino? Not literally. Is his skin so pale he would catch fire if he went outside at noon? Yes.
-autism: Yes I’m aware that calling him autistic makes him, problematic rep by perpetuating the autism unfeeling savant stereotype whatever but have you considered i’m autistic and I’m projecting also he’s L with standards? Anyway traits of AuTism he has: hyper   fixation, canonically breaks and fixes things over and over because like ofc he does, doesn’t understand Emotion, hyperaware of body language at the same time as it all somehow flying over his head, low empathy, sensory experiences™, min maxed in certain areas, and I don’t think he’s got social interaction quite right? There’s something off about it
-gifted kid (derogatory) This is self explanatory but basically him being the smartest and the best in a competitive environment caused most of his issues, such as the perfectionism, the need to succeed, the lack of self esteem and ridiculously high expectations on himself, giving himself no breaks or time to relax, the “i must be productive with every second of my day or i will die” deal, the “peaked at 11” thing, the way in which he goes through life like there’s going to be a fucking test on it
-Eldest Daughter™ lmao. Norman’s always had to be mature, he’s always had to be the best, he’s always had to do the things Ray got out of bc he’s a snitch and Emma got out of because Isabella likes her. Norman gets respect from Isabella only if he excels, and her bar for him is astronomical. He doesn’t have the Mommy Issues that Ray has, but it’s because for him Isabella basically just reflected his expectations on himself, whereas with Ray it was more personal.
-low empathy (part of the autism thing): this one needs more explanation, but it’s not a bad thing in and of itself. Cognitive empathy is a thing and he can use it, but he does not instinctively understand other people’s emotions, or even recognize them properly, especially when the person is not like himself. This is obvious in Emma. Man has no fucking clue what’s going on in her head or why she does what she does, but he can predict what she will do in any given situation very well. He could understand the suicide attempt from ray he predicted more because Ray’s an easier equation to solve, and someone who’s more similar to him. I know he gets it because, well, motherfucker’s just as self desctructive as him, just in a more dignified manner.
-he’s got some sort of chronic illness. This is also me projecting and a headcanon but he’s got something going on, even before lambda pumped him full of growth hormones or whatever which they maybe should have Not Done but oh well. (I assume this just didn’t happen in the anime, since he’s still so fucking short) But he's So weak. He passed out when it was too hot. He passed out when it was too cold. He can’t open a pickle jar. His skin is too pale and he’s skinny af. He’s much more prone to sickness and probably has asthma too? But in the case that he did actually have something going on, I don’t think grace field would see the need to treat it, if it didn’t impact the quality of his meat? Isabella’s probably just “you have chronic pain and you get migraines? Great, take some tylenol and do some calculus.” Can’t say that probably helped anything.
personality type: ISTJ
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basically, he’s the most boring personality type to exist, and personally as an enfp i do not respect him. But basically this means he’s a fucking nerd that gets his projects done for school the day they’re assigned, is probably the president of the Anime Student Council™, and could probably get away with premeditated murder (ok actual istjs this is a joke don’t skin me)
The only trait that norman doesn’t have on the istj thing is telling the truth. Yeah, he values the truth, but like, that doesn’t apply to him, clearly. Bitch is a notorious liar.
The only other personality type he has any similarity with is intj, which is the same except it’s more rare and a purple theme instead of a blue theme. Sadly, that’s not him though, because although he can care more about some kinds of philosophy overall this isn’t the case and ray already occupies this personality type tbh.
strengths and weaknesses: This one’s kind of obvious, but he is aside from the crazy insane intelligence good at planning. Extremely good at planning. He can predict any outcome and figure out how to prevent it, using all his resources. For example he’s physically weak and someone could literally just walk up and stab him, but it doesn’t impede his progress on his goals because he’s surrounded himself with strong, mentally inferior people who would die for him in a heartbeat. He never gets stuck in some “everything is shit and i can’t do anything” deal like Emma and Ray do, he always works through it and has confidence in his abilities (in as much as he will solve the problem or die™. Weaknesses other than his twink body include his Low Wisdom score. It’s funny how he’s often associated with an owl, the mans is 14. He thinks he knows what he’s doing. He doesn’t. Plus obviously his fundamental misunderstanding of so much of everything going on around him, the fact that he lies not just to the world but himself, his refusal to take care of himself and his incredible cowardice. His achilles heel is being forced to, actually confront his actions.
what he likes about himself: He does pride himself on his mental abilities, and his judgement, which in his opinion is the only correct opinion and the only correct way. In the past, he likes being seen as a leader, he likes being responsible for other people. He likes his ability to manipulate and lie, because he sees it as an asset, and I honestly think he enjoys being william minerva more than he enjoys being Norman. He prides himself on his unhealthy expectations and the fact that he is able to meet them. Honestly, he does think he’s better than everyone else, mentally, though it’s humbled by his self hatred. Cursed thought: If Norman had self esteem he would be light yagami.
what he doesn’t like about himself/insecurities: Oh god, nearly everything. His appearance, his status, his superiority, his physical inability, his own mess of a mind, also have I mentioned his appearance. He’s obsessed with self control. He wants everything he sees wrong with himself gone. And I understand why having control of everything is necessary and appealing, everything for him has always been rigid and planned out from moment one, he was even more regulated in lambda, and though he desperately wants to Not Be Food, he has no idea what to do with the chains now that he’s broken out of them. So he just wraps them around himself. Regulates to an unhealthy degree when he sleeps, what he eats, when he actually takes even minimal care of his own problems, what he looks like, how much of himself he lets show, the expressions on his face, the literal thoughts inside his own head he will shut down if they are not Correct. It’s literal self harm. Norman, please stop it.
motivations/goals in life/general philosophy: To be honest, I’m not sure he knows what he wants. He sure thinks he does, he could sure give you a memorized answer, but it means nothing. He wants to excel. He wants Emma to be happy. He wants to be perfect and for that to make everything perfect. But he doesn’t realize everything he’s working towards will do pretty much the opposite of that. He’s a crippling perfectionist, and pretty much everything he does is motivated by his fear of failing. He picks the certain path, he doesn’t wait for anyone else, he doesn’t care if it’s not nice. Emma foils that a most of the time because he cares about her, but it can only go so far, especially after he’s had so much time without her to develop a Complex. His philosophy is very contradictory, basically the tokyo ghoul “everything bad that happens to you stems from a lack of ability”. All of his problems are his fault. All the world’s problems are his to fix. If he can’t fix them, it’s his fault, it’s because he wasn’t strong enough, and not being perfect condemns someone forever, including himself.
how he’s perceived by others vs how he actually is: In most people there wouldn’t truly be much of a difference, but with Norman things are different, because, well, most of his personality in grace field is a put on, as well as the tough guy dictator thing he radiates after lambda. How he appears to someone is determined by the context of their meeting- the kids at grace field see him as a nerdy, weakish, pretty boring kid who is really caring and kind. The researchers at lambda see an obedient, beaten down and perfectionistic boy. The lambda kids see him as an infallible leader, ruthless and genius, a good man who knows what’s right. But in truth none of that is him. It’s a fucking chess game to him, putting on different faces, lying and pretending and treating everyone differently. In truth? He’s a fucking coward. He’s scared out of his mind and he’s tired and he can’t take pain, he’s obsessed with reaching some goal he deems is necessary that in the end is going to be his death because he doesn’t want to face the consequences of his actions. He’s taken on the role of someone evil, though deep down he’s not, he feels it’s easier to live that way because it strips him of his conscience.
interpersonal relationships: In general, Norman sees all relationships in a pretty dim light. He sees everyone as black and white, for the most part, and other people make no sense to him intuitively, he has to figure them out like a puzzle. He’s manipulative and not particularly kind, but he follows all societal expectations to a T, overly focused on his appearance and placing the person he’s interacting with into a Category™. So he can be truly kind, to people he feels deserve it, to people who he values and doesn’t see flaws in. He gets incredibly attached to people he loves, protective, though he often doesn’t take their own feelings on the matter into consideration, and he’s ruthless with anyone who he deems a bad person. With people he understands and relates to, though, things can be different. If he sees someone as like himself, he will drop all the social interaction police bullshit and cut to the chase of whatever he wants or needs from them, and he’s not very forgiving in any manner, if he thinks what someone did is actually bad.
Emma: Norman obviously cares a lot about Emma, and honestly views her as better than anyone else. He realizes her moral integrity and all of the things she has and he doesn’t, and admires it. Because of his black and white view, Emma is like an angel to him. She couldn’t do anything wrong if she tried. But he comes to treat her as something to be protected instead of respected, and although he realizes she wouldn’t like what he’s doing, he fundamentally cannot empathize with her and doesn’t try to understand her. Their personalities are very literally opposite. Norman really needs to fucking listen to her. And Emma needs to understand that Norman doesn’t have a single ounce of empathy and you really do need to spell it out for him. Emma can only convince him when she has logical reasons for her actions, which she, doesn’t often have. And Emma gave Norman too much slack, because she didn’t see past the surface, and Ray never wanted to warn her, even though he knew the dude was showing a bunch of red flags, because you know. It was kind of an unspoken deal between them. (on ray’s part)
Ray: His relationship with Ray is a lot more complicated than with Emma. He understands Ray, where he doesn’t understand Emma, and he can see right through anything Ray does. And this makes things really tense between them, because Ray doesn’t, take kindly to being psychoanalyzed. If someone perceives him he will deck them and Norman is just there silently perceiving him at all times when Emma doesn’t see it. They are both constantly in competition with each other, but they care about each other a lot, though it’s kind of in a derogatory way. They both recognize each other as fundamentally fucked up, and silently agree never to bring it up with Emma. They’re nice to each other when she’s around, but all pretenses disappear when she’s gone. Ray is always frustrated with Norman, because Norman’s never been intimidated by him, and though he tries his best not to be vulnerable around him, Norman can always see through it, whereas Ray can’t crack Norman’s fake fucking smile no matter what he does. Norman will always take Emma’s side, and doesn’t see Ray as a good person at all, but he still understands and can excuse him, he takes measures to be… worse than Ray, which is better in his mind, because it’s rational, and ‘not selfish’.
Isabella: She has always had ridiculously high expectations for Norman, and treats him kind of harshly compared to the others. Bitch has heat stroke and Isabella’s first question is a calculus problem instead of like, “are you ok”. She knows he doesn’t complain about anything ever and she doesn’t stop him from being Terrible to himself, because it makes her job easier. They want smart kids, not mentally adjusted kids. She does really care for all of them, but she basically overrides it, she gives them what they want, not what they need, lets them be exactly what they’re making themselves. Isabella is distant with Ray but gives him anything he wants, she’s close and super nice with Emma, but Norman is… it’s weird. Isabella is proud of him because he meets her astronomically high bar. But at the same time, Norman never really cared for her that much and has never pretended to. Once they discover The Thing, though, he has a revelation, and it doesn’t take him long to switch his entire perspective about her. He’s pretty much like. Oh. She’s like me. That explains it, time to treat her like I treat myself: fucking brutally. Passive aggressive as hell. The kind of energy the :) emoticon at the end of an email gives. He does like just go “yeah we should kill her” at one point, which. You know, ok. When he got shipped out it was hhhh really interesting because Isabella knew full well he knew he was walking to his death and Norman was like “are you Truly Happy?” and just went :) and she was like h u h and tried to get him to talk while they were walking there because she feels Bad about it and he just. Did not. He didn’t say a single word just kind of smiled menacingly at her and I think it was half a sort of rebellion and half because he viewed her as similar to himself and therefore felt no need to put up any front with her, no words were necessary for him to impart exactly how he felt about it
Lambda kids: His relationship with the lambda kids is weird and bittersweet. I think he really truly does care about them, they were in a similar situation to his and he wants them to get what they want. However it is not a healthy or beneficial relationship, they see him as a god and don’t realize that he’s killing himself to give them what they want, he’s basically adopted them when out of anyone norman’s the one that should least be in charge of kids. I think he’s honestly younger than them but I’m not sure if they even know. He acts like their fucking mom, and that’s from what he thinks mothers are like… like isabella?? Giving them what they want, not what they need, lying to them, showing a front, caring deeply for them but at the same time using them for his own ends. And it’s not helpful for him. He thinks he knows what they need, but what he’s doing is what they want. What they need is therapy,(and so does norman), and he doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with using them as weapons because they love him. It makes him feel good, to be seen as perfect, to have people who don’t know how weak he really is. But it’s only making him worse, and he’s enabling everything the lambda kids are doing wrong as well. They need like, Yuugo and Lucas. Some actual adults who are actually wise and have the ability and the knowledge to take care of them and understand their mental problems and maybe actually address them. And actually be nice to them. But um sadly.
what he’s doing wrong: It’s pretty obvious, but… Norman, you maybe *shouldn’t* commit genocide? You’re not helping emma, you’re not making anything better. You’re not helping the lambda kids, you’re enabling them. You’re not helping your friends from grace field, you’re ignoring what they want. You’re not helping the world, you’re eradicating an entire race from the face of the earth and murdering the poor for the crimes of the fucking 1%. You’re not being a martyr, you’re a selfish piece of shit liar you little coward, you just want an easy way out and you want to die on your bloody fucking hill instead of admitting you’re wrong. Grow up, cringe little man.
why he went wrong: I think most of the reason this happened was the way he was raised combined with the kind of person he is. Norman would have turned out fine, if there has been good adults in his life who actually cared about his well being. Instead he got people who just wanted to control him and make him what they needed, and family who largely didn’t realize there was anything wrong. Ray being an ass to him most of forever probably didn’t help but well, that’s just Ray. Even then, he would have managed alright if he escaped with the rest of the kids because he would never have been separated from the experiences that caused the rest of them to realize demons weren’t all evil. In lambda he didn’t have anyone supporting him or telling him when things went too far, so he fell into relying on himself alone, pushing himself further with absolutely no limits. All he saw was enemies and allies, and things got stratified. He never had a lucas or a yuugo or mujika when he would have needed it, instead he found children who wanted him to be in charge and a world that made it so he had to be. Everything was an echo chamber for his worst thoughts, so they just became more and more dominant.
what he needs: To put it simply, he needs Emma and Ray to cut to the chase and slap him across the face and make him take care of himself. He needs to be forced to see everything for what it really is- this edgy 14 year old committing atrocities to feel better about himself? He needs to be told that what he’s doing is irrational, because in reality, it is. There are better solutions that he’s ignoring, both to his own suffering and the demons, and the way he’s going now no one will truly be happy because of it, that there is no requirement that things be perfect and this bullshit doesn’t make him stronger. He needs someone responsible to take the fucking dagger out of his hands. He also needs someone to babysit him and make him go to bed at a reasonable time.
i describe his personality through songs on my spotify playlist for him:
-outrunning karma by alec benjamin: this one super applies because it calls him out for making shitty decisions, being manipulative and a liar, and having blood on his hands in a very calm and subdued manner, that he knows this is wrong and yet he chooses to keep running faster and faster towards destruction, that he means to escape it through death
-empty by boyinaband and jaiden: yes this is a song about anorexia yes it also applies to norman i’m not saying norman literally has an eating disorder (but honestly it wouldn’t be far out of character if he did) but metaphorically this applies to his method of ignoring his needs, both emotional and physical, in favor of seeming in control
-toxic thoughts by faith marie: this one speaks to his gifted kid trauma. Man’s got perfectionism running his entire soul. He’s terrified of failing, because he’s always been at the very top, he’ll beat himself up over any miniscule mistake and forces himself to keep at bad habits that keep him Productive, but he won’t ask for help no matter how much he’s suffering because that would be failing, he fights with his mind, this song basically tells him “yeah i feel you but you need to stop that”
-no time to die by billie eilish: ignore the romantic overtones but this is emma and norman, emma who trusted norman and was lied to, betrayed, for norman’s greater good, and norman who refuses to feel or hurt because of it, who refuses to apologize or see himself as wrong, pushes forward because he’s going to Pass Away
-achilles come down by gang of youths: hhhhh it's like. His vibe. Obviously you can disregard the lifestyle specific shit but it's. It's achilles come down you have to understand it’s like the same deal as friend, please just like french and longer
-friend, please by 21 pilots: i feel like i don't have to explain this one but it’s more to the manga (not the anime where he kind of figures out he done did wrong by himself instead of committing unforgivable sins and still going yeah this is valid before emma is like holy fuck). He is like sorry emma I cannot fix anything I’m going to die :) *coughs blood* and emma going like stop it stop it stop it fuck you see you fucked up and i forgive you just stop don’t walk away while he’s like “no<3”
why im a repressed little norman kinnie even tho he’s my exact opposite: I don’t generally kin ppl like norman, honestly he’s an infj I have no clue how it happened but I’m pretty sure it’s because of my intense desire to project onto a little man who cannot lift a milk jug and has chronic pain and decides you know what I AM tired of being nice i DO wanna go apeshit. Also he’s a twink. A little bastard. He’s a terrible person and I go mood every time he does anything. I said mood when he fell out of a tree. Don’t know what this says about me, I swear I wouldn’t commit no genocide. He’s like the inverse of Yoichi Saotome, and somehow i kin him too. Damn.
Miscellaneous headcanons:
-man’s SO attached to his william minerva cloak. He’s a wispy little bitch, you know he’s wearing that thing inside the house, he’s fucking cold. It also makes him Look Important he can retreat into it like an emo middle schooler with an oversized sweatshirt
-although you could probably get Mad street cred from having two whole brands you know he’s not gonna whip it out and show off his lambda thing he’s incredibly self conscious and his chest hasn’t seen the sun in years
-norman’s got MAD laundry skills to be able to wear like, all white all the time while constantly murdering people. I think he’s the only one who knows to do the laundry. And Ray is the only one who knows how to cook.
-but even then there’s gotta still be a few questionable stains on that thing, but if anyone asks he’s like “ketchup” “I’ve literally never seen you eat anything with that much color” “ketchup :)” *coughs blood*
-he’s probably thought “well i have not literally coughed blood yet today so I am not legally obligated to take care of myself”
-He probably adopted much of his current personality from taking on the persona of william minerva. I’m calling him out for being like me, he’s a blank motherfucker, he absorbs personality traits from characters he plays! He’s just not in theatre so it’s a bit more intense!
-the first time he sees barbara Eating Demon Meat he kinda stares and goes oh cool! not for me and violently exits the room. Like it's hilarious bc he thinks that's really gross on a moral level though he understands why she would do it
-Which is even funnier bc I’m not sure about the canon on this but there was That Chapter Cover that one time that kinda seemed to imply norman eating demon meat which i absolutely latched onto because I’m terrible. He was just politely eating it. With a knife and fork like why dude. As to a possible reason for him doing that I can come up with, of course barbara does it out of spite, but man we don’t know the properties, if it had some sort of painkilling aspect to it or it was like, caffeine, you know he would, but he would Definitely not talk about it
-I kinda disagree with what the anime did in episode eight? It was good I liked it and the imagery was fantastic but also have you considered Norman could not kill someone with his own hands if he tried, or even physically injure them? That’s what his minions are for shawty. That doesn’t make it any less bad, of course, but the manga captured it perfectly by the fact of he carries around a dagger and a scepter in the capitol battle, but he never even raises it out of more than intimidation. He walks through calmly like he’s not scared at all but he makes sure all the lambda kids do all the actual murder, he just stands there impartially, clearly The Mastermind, as the kids fucking murder the queen of the demons. And I think that’s more profound because he’s, a coward. And he doesn’t realize being the one who orders the strike makes you just as responsible as the one who sticks the knife in someone. The knife is just there to Compensate™  for the fact that he weighs like eighty pounds.
-he’s more of like lady macbeth (because he’s a girlboss) than macbeth himself. He has blood on his hands, but it’s the kind of blood that you can’t wash off. He never killed anyone himself, and he cannot admit he never would have been able to.
-the last thing is that there are definitely epic things about the anime, episode 8 was my favorite so far, goddamn that imagery and the bitch walking through the city while it burns down with the screaming asmr going on behind him my god. We stan. But like the downside of, letting Emma and Ray get to him before he commits first degree murder makes the whole thing lose a lot of his value. In the manga (oh my god look at me being a pretentious manga fan please) it fit more of his ideas- he never backed down, and he planned for Emma coming and trying to stop him. Of course he wanted Emma to stop him, he wanted it with all his fucking heart he was pleading for it to happen but the man wouldn’t give himself what he wanted if he was held at gunpoint. He knew she’d come and he made absolutely sure she wouldn’t be able to stop him. So when she came and he said “you’re too late”??? It kind of said it all, in the fact that he was disappointed that he got his way. He still thought he did the right thing, but deep down there where he shoved all his thoughts and feelings he desperately wanted to be saved from himself.
Tumblr media
So yeah, those are my thoughts. Feel free to eviscerate me if these are not Correct he is just my favorite girlboss who I feel the need to yell at

Delacroix
Bucky Barnes Gen, 2565 words, rated T
Jewish Bucky Barnes, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Episode 5 Truth
Bucky spends a few days in Delacroix with Sam and his family. On one evening, as they both have a beer before dinner, watching the sun set, they have a conversation about life, about therapy, about work.

Part 33 of Making a Home - the Jewish Bucky series
--------------
Sam’s family house is more of a home than anything Bucky’s lived in since he was deployed.
It’s warm and luminous, with big windows and light paint on the wood and the walls. There’s a poarch where they all end up sitting at the end of the day, when the sun sets over the bayou. The walls outside are blue and the roof is red. There are crayon drawings stuck with magnets to the fridge and mismatched furniture and containers. It’s been lived in, loved in.
A few days after his surprise arrival, Bucky stops feeling like a blood stain on the tapestry of life of the Wilson home.
Sarah’s nice and warm. He immediately takes a liking to her, and her to him, and he can see how much that infuriates Sam. What can he say? She’s a gorgeous woman, funny and bright and caring and her smile is honestly the kind that probably stopped a few hearts in her lifetime. Yes, she’s his sister, but he still has eyes, and he’ll be damned if he doesn’t at least show appreciation. Besides, she seems to enjoy it. He’d stop the second he’d sense uncomfort.
He hasn't gotten to flirt and be comfortable with flirting in a really long time. It seems to be the same for her. What if they’re just… enjoying the flirtation? And enjoying infuriating Sam? Bucky considers it his duty as Sam’s friend.
Delacroix is unlike anywhere he’s ever been. It’s half an island and half a town. It’s relaxing. And the food… Bucky doesn’t think he’s eaten as much seafood in his life as he had in the past week.
It’s a slow end of day in Louisiana when Bucky and Sam find themselves sitting on the plastic chairs out back, with beers, watching the surface of the water. There’s music playing in the house, the kids are doing their homework.
It’s simple. Bucky breathes in and out, unobstructed.
He hears Sam’s intake of breath and knows a hard conversation is coming from that alone. No, that’s a lie. Sam’s shifted, ten seconds ago. He’s looked between his beer and the water four times in the past minute.
“We haven’t had time to talk about Madripoor,” Sam starts and Bucky immediately tenses.
He’d almost forgotten he’d told Sam they’d talk about that later. Because still, he’s not ready to talk about it. He’s not ready to talk about that part of his past. It’s still an infected wound in him. It’s still hurting. He can’t do it. He’s about to say that when Sam holds up his hand.
“We don’t have to talk about it,” he says, surprisingly. “I don’t need to know shit if you’re not ready to tell.”
Bucky goes back to breathing. It’s a reprieve. Even if one day, Sam might expect him to be ready… it’s extra time. He’s so thankful for it.
“I’ll tell you though,” Sam keeps going. “You need a new therapist. Because if I know one thing, after everything, and what I saw in that precinct? it’s that Raynor’s not working for you. You need better. You deserve better.”
Bucky looks up at him then. Sam is looking at the water, but there is that look on his face. The look of determination, of drive, the look that Bucky knows… there’s no use in trying to go against what he is saying now.
No one has ever told him he deserved better.
He’s told himself that a few times, in the few moments where the clouds parted and he didn’t feel like the worst person in the world.
But he doesn’t think anyone has ever told him that. Even Steve. There was a couple ‘you deserved better’, but they were all in the past tense, all regarding Hydra, not Bucky’s current situation. Because his current situation is good. It’s great, compared to the past seventy years. Maybe even compared to what was there before. Because he doesn’t break his back in the factory during the day and in the docks at night anymore.
He’s so silent and shocked Sam just keeps going.
“And don’t give me bullshit about not needing help or whatever. I know your generation didn’t do therapy but that ain’t gonna fly with me. You deserve a therapist suited to your needs, and I know that’s gonna be hard to find, with your trunkload of decades of trauma, but we’ll find them.”
He says it with such determination, like it’s his new personal mission. He has much better to do than try to help Bucky more than he already has, and yet… Sam looks at him finally, for a long moment.
“Raynor’s not a bad doctor,” he says. “She’s just not the right fit. And that’s not uncommon. We just need to find you someone that’s better. And someone that’s not me. Because I can’t be your friend and your therapist, man. And out of the two, I’d much rather be your friend.”
Bucky’s still staring. He doesn’t know how to handle this. Nowhere in his databank of social interactions is there something that prepares him for this. He’s had long talks with people before, hell, even with fucking Zemo, but this is entirely different and he has no idea how to handle it.
“I’m sure you’re a great therapist,” Bucky says quietly after a moment, before he takes a big swig of a beer.
Sam chuckles, shaking his head. “You do realize I ain’t a therapist right? I’m a counselor.”
“You’ll have to give me the difference on that because we were still using alienist the last time I heard about psychoanalysis,” Bucky points out.
“There isn’t much of one. I guess I’m more about… finding practical solutions for people to deal with their trauma than really knowing the root cause of it. Probably because, since I worked with the VA, I knew what the root was.”
Bucky hums, nodding. That makes sense to him. More than the ‘how does that make you feel’s. “Either way, I’m still sure you’re a great counselor.”
“It ain’t difficult, with your experience,” Sam shrugs, watching him. “You don’t know better, old man.”
Bucky snorts at that, watching the water again. Sometimes, his eyes catch motion, but he’s never sure if it’s wildlife under the surface or just a trick of the light.
AJ and Cass seem to be debating with their mother whether they can finish their homework later, after dinner. Bucky barely knows them, but he already knows it won’t actually get done if they follow their plan. Kids are kids. Bucky’s sisters could never finish their homework after the radio show either. Too distracted, too tired.
He turns his attention back on Sam after a moment.
“Walker is in a bad shape,” Bucky says quietly. “Now, and before Hoskins died too. The second we saw him in Germany, I felt it. That guy didn’t get help.”
Sam sighs heavily. “Yeah. Not enough of them do, when they come back. You wouldn’t, if you weren’t forced to.”
Bucky can’t deny it. “Yeah, but I’m 107.”
If Sam noticed the year added to his age, he doesn’t mention it. At least for now.
“Some of it hasn’t changed that much,” Sam explains. “The army… You know that culture of toughness, right? Gotta be strong, gotta be a man. Can’t cry, can’t show you’re struggling. I’m sure they had that shit too, in your day, probably even worse.”
He’s not wrong. There were a lot of issues in his day but that was part of things. Emotional outbursts that weren’t from anger were frowned upon. Once they got to the war, it was even worse at first, until it started really getting hard. And then there were two options. Either you fucking cry with your buddies, or you end badly. Bucky had Steve, and the Howlies.
“Men like Walker… Because they’re these tough white guys, they’re encouraged to be like that. Aggressive, emotionally-closed off, fight-hungry. They’re the ones that shove you and call you a pussy for not laughing at their frankly horrible offensive jokes. It’s like they think the trauma we all face just won’t touch them. Or that they can’t show anyone it touched them. So they keep it all in. And the only way they get to be… emotional is in combat.”
Bucky nods quietly. They’re worse off than he thought.
It wasn’t good in his day either, but it just feels worse now. It churned and churned and got bigger with every spin, and now it’s all a giant fucked up stick of trauma cotton candy, all twisted in itself and sticking to itself.
“When I work for the SRT… Sometimes I see these kids,” Bucky mumbles. “They’re what? 22? And I ask them why they’re here, you know, try to pass time. And they tell me they enlisted for college. Or healthcare. And it’s…” He closes his eyes. “It’s been eighty fucking years…”
He takes a swig of the beer again, shaking his head. “When the crash hit, in the 30s, things were bad. No one could afford shit, there was polio, there was syphilis… It was really bad. And they made plans. They tried to get healthcare on the way, and they half succeeded. And more than like… two thirds of the population was for it too. And we had basically none of the resources we have now.”
He looks up at Sam for a moment. “It hurts to see… that it’s still… We’re still here. At least on that issue. On other stuff… Rights and all, that’s getting better.” He finishes. “But healthcare… and college…” He shakes his head. “It’s criminal. That’s what it is. It feels criminal.”
Sam bumps his shoulder with his fist, chuckling. “Don’t say shit like that next to journalists, they’ll say the Soviets put communism in your brain along with the murdering.”
Bucky chuckles at that. “Nah. That was all America. Living in it. Dying for it.”
Behind them, AJ and Cass have lost their battle of wits with their mother.
“You happy with what you’re doing?” Sam asks after a moment.
Bucky takes a deep breath. The answer is easy. “No,” he mutters. “But I don’t have a say in the matter. Until they decide I’ve done enough to undo the damage I perpetrated as the Soldier… I’m gonna be clearing Hydra safehouses. And after the shit I pulled with Zemo, I’m gonna be at it for a while longer, I think. But… I was expecting that.”
He can feel Sam’s eyes on him. “You knew what would happen.”
“Yep. On all accounts. With the Dora Milaje, with you, with Walker, with the U.S. government, and the GRC, and everything… Still did it.”
Sam huffs loudly. “Stubborn ass.” He shakes his head. He’s smiling, beautifully, brightly.
Bucky smiles at that. “You know it. Wouldn’t be alive without it.”
The sun is starting to set over the bayou. Every evening, Bucky finds himself thinking he’s never seen anything quite like it before.
“Whatever happens,” Sam points out after a moment, looking down at his empty beer bottle. “You got a couch here. Somewhere to crash. Somewhere to rest. I don’t know what your situation is, up north.”
Bucky sighs a little. “I got a house,” he answers, looking back at him. “A townhouse, in Brooklyn.”
Sam’s eyebrows rise up to meet the descending sun. “Well excuse us, mister.” He teases.
Bucky shakes his head. “It’s not like that,” he starts. Sam looks even less like he takes him seriously. “It’s a former Hydra safehouse,” he adds, and now his friend’s eyes get a little sadder, a little darker. “The army got tired of me taking space in their housing, so the second we raided a place within proper commute distance, they handed it over to me.”
Said like that, it sounds even worse than it actually was.
“It wasn’t like.. Full of Nazi or Hydra shit, or anything. It was just a house. They got rid of the bodies.”
The emotional journey on Sam’s face as he talks is worth a good dozen of sunrises.
“And you live there?” Sam asks. He’s struggling not to let his bewilderment and horror show, but he’s failing.
It makes sense. It sounds like an absolutely terrible situation to be in. It is an absolutely terrible situation to be in. As much as owning a townhouse in Brooklyn can be terrible.
It’s been about four months now since he signed those papers and moved his bag of things into that pretty house with the marks in the doorways and the basement he still hasn’t stepped foot in. And now that he’s been away long enough…
He guesses he kinda misses it.
He doesn’t miss the house in itself, much. He does miss… everything else though. Charlie, Miriam, the neighbor whose name he still doesn’t know, the familiar commute, the Chinese place he gets a lot of very late night food at, the proximity to his childhood streets, the way life feels there. He misses his night jogs in the relative quiet. He misses the weather, and the oven he baked kugel in for the first time.
Brooklyn has become familiar again, in all of its differences with his memories.
And he didn’t even realize it was happening.
“You should come, one of these days,” Bucky shrugs. “I have a couple guest bedrooms.”
Sam punches him lightly in the shoulder. “Fancy ass ‘couple of guest bedrooms’.” He teases and Bucky smiles. “So I’m guessing I should try and find some good therapists for you in New York then,” he adds.
Bucky shrugs lightly. “I feel like… I have some stuff tethering me there.”
Sam’s expression shifts for an instant. “Like the SRT?”
Bucky shakes his head. “Nah. Like my childhood congregation, that somehow still exists, and has a shul not too far from where I live.” He points out.
“Shul?” Sam asks.
Bucky smiles lightly when he looks up at him. A few days ago, Sam spoke of his teetee and Bucky probably made the same face Sam’s making now.
“Synagogue,” Bucky explains. “Jewish temples. Shul’s yiddish.”
Sam makes a small ‘ah’ sound and nods. For a moment, they’re silent again. The noises of the world around them aren’t threatening to overwhelm them though, they’re… comforting. A warm tapestry in the background.
“You’re Jewish, I take it?”
“No, I’m Mormon,” Bucky replies with the straightest face he can muster before chuckling.
Sam punches him again, a little harder this time. “Come on, dude.”
“Yeah, yeah. I’m Jewish.”
That’s the first time he says that out loud in… He’s never said it like that ever. This is the first time in his life that he says it that way. The first time he’s not afraid of the outcome of such an admission.
It’s a heady, wonderful feeling. He never thought he’d ever be comfortable enough to do that. Somehow, he might have Zemo to thank for that. Zemo and his fucking questioning. Not that he’s going to be asking much more questions from the Raft.
He’s Jewish. That’s a truth that doesn’t deserve to be hidden right now. Not when he can carry it. Not when he is strong enough to bear it proudly. He feels like his heart is going to burst with something he cannot name.
“Did Steve know?”
Bucky bursts out laughing.

When Everyone Who Loves me Has Died
Read here on AO3!
Summary:
"Everything is as it should be, yet here I am, still feeling like I’m missing something.”
“Like what?” Tim can’t remember the last time he saw Harley sit still and listen for so long without getting fidgety. Either she's learning self-control, or Tim's life is just really fucking depressing.
“Like...I don’t know.” Tim scratches his thumbnail against some dried paint, unable to feel the chill of the metal through his glove. “Everyone is back, but that doesn’t erase the fact that they were dead. That part still happened, regardless of whether they came back or not. It’s like—like burning a hole in a piece of paper and covering it with tape. It doesn’t heal anything.”
Whoever came up with the concept of mind over matter should be imprisoned for false advertising. Tim has been trying to get his mind over the matter for months now, and the matters are still very much gripping the steering wheel. If anything, his mind gave in and slid into the passenger seat, going along for the ride. Tim is sitting on a billboard platform, Lex Luthor’s ginormous bald self providing a nauseating backdrop as he advertises whatever world domination kick he’s on at the moment. Tim watches the cars go by on the highway, utterly indifferent to the tiny speck of a vigilante watching from above. His cowl is down, but he isn’t worried. It’s unlikely that anyone will be able to spot him up here, civilian or otherwise. Besides, it gets harder and harder to breathe under the weight of the mask these days. He was supposed to be getting better. The days are coming in at longer intervals, which should be a relief. Days when he gets “dark and twisty” as Jason lovingly calls it, which isn’t too far off, Tim supposes. Something inside of him is definitely twisted, coiled into a furl of darkness where there used to be light. God, he needs therapy. He should be getting better. There is no logical reason to be feeling this way. Not anymore. Not when things are finally back where they should be after years of grief. Maybe something has been knocked loose in his brain, keeps him on this brink he can’t seem to sway to either side of. He’s not happy, but he’s not completely sad either. There’s no logic to it, no reason. No closure. Is this how ghosts feel? Like they’re straddling the in-between, stuck feeling like everything they have is just slightly out of reach? “Why the long face, kiddo?”
Tim is up in an instant, fumbling to pull his cowl back over his face. He raises his bo staff at the prowler, only to find Harley standing at the other end of the platform, her arms packed with reusable grocery bags. She’s wearing civilian clothes: a Nightwing tank top and leather pants that look like she doused them in glue and rolled around in a kiddie pool filled with glitter. Tim relaxes. He lowers his staff. “You shouldn’t do that. I could have knocked your head off.” “Nah, I’m too good to be taken down by a twelve-year-old.” “I’m eighteen.” “You sure? ‘Cause I could have sworn you were still in middle school.” “Hilarious.” “Thanks, I’ve been thinkin’ about doing some comedy on the side to pay the bills. Eddie says I’ve got a real knack for it.” Harley sits on the edge of the platform beside the spot where Tim was before. “I asked you a question, by the way.” “Bruce is going to kill me if he finds out I’m hanging out with you.” Fine, so that’s a minor exaggeration. Bruce will always have beef with Harley regardless of how many good deeds she does. Dick’s theory is that Bruce has some lingering bitterness from his and Harley’s rivalry from med school, and he probably isn’t too far off. The rest of the family is far looser when it comes to trusting Harley; Alfred even sent her a Hanukkah gift last year. “You and I both know Brucie is in Metropolis this week.” At Tim’s inquiring look, she explains, “My mom is friends with him on Facebook. So, are you gonna spill or what? ‘Cause I’ve got ice cream here and I swear to god I’ll fill your nostrils with tapioca if it melts.” Tim rolls his eyes. He lets his cowl fall back against his neck and sits beside Harley. “I’m fine.” “And that’s why you’re hanging out here all angsty-like?” “I’m not angsty.” “You’re the angstiest person on this fuckin’ billboard.” Which, fine, that’s probably true. “I don’t need a PHD to tell that something’s eating ya, kid. Which I do, by the way. Got the certificate and everything.” Tim gestures to her grocery bags. “I thought you had somewhere to be.” “What, these ol’ things? Nah. I just have a date with Pam-a-lamb tonight and had to borrow some supplies.” “Borrow?” “The manager there was a dick, anyways. He’s the one who got all snappy when I ate all the free samples, so trust me. He deserved to get his stuff stolen.” “I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that.” “I’ll go back and return the thirty-seven scratch-offs I took if you tell me what’s bothering you.” Tim looks out over the black horizon, the moon barely visible behind the clouds. “It’s nothing.” “Everything is something. Gandhi said that.” “Pretty sure he didn’t.” “What, did you personally know the guy?” She nudges Tim with her elbow. “Well? Spit it out, Timberlake.” Tim lets out a breath. “It’s just...you know when you lose something really important to you? And you miss it, but after a while, when you’ve already accepted that you’ll never see it again, you find it? And you’re happy to have it back, but there’s still...something is missing. Almost like you never found it at all, you know?” “Not really, no.” Tim’s mouth twitches upward. “I’ve spent the past two years in mourning, but now I don’t have to mourn anymore. Everything is perfect again.” Harley arches an eyebrow. “Lemme guess, you don’t know why you still feel like you’re grieving?” Tim nods. “Small fry, that’s not a symptom. That’s normal for someone in your situation.” “No, it isn’t. I should be happy right now. I should—I should be the happiest I’ve ever been. I spent so long trying to make everything right again, and I did it. Conner is back. Bart is back. Bruce is back. Everything is as it should be, yet here I am, still feeling like I’m missing something.” “Like what?” Tim can’t remember the last time he saw Harley sit still and listen for so long without getting fidgety. It doesn’t heal anything.” “Well, of course it doesn’t.” Tim looks at her, surprised. Harley’s eyes are serious for once, void of humor. “Having all your folks back doesn’t erase the fact that they were gone. Grief is what makes us human. Still feelin’ bad after everything is fixed just means you’re still working on it.” “That’s it?” Harley’s eyebrows furrow. “What’s it?” “I thought you were going to...I don’t know, crack open some huge revelation and make me realize it’s all in my head or something.” “I mean, it kind of is in your head.” Harley tugs on one pink pigtail. “Grief doesn’t come from your feet, Timantha.” “So...how do I fix it?” Harley shrugs, sitting back and swinging her legs in the air. “Fuck if I know. Go see a therapist or something?” Tim snorts. “I’d rather not.” “What, you got a prior engagement? Too busy for psychoanalysis?” “I can’t exactly go to a normal therapist and explain to them that all of my friends are superheroes and my dad is Batman.” “Hm. Point taken, bird boy.” Harley goes to boop his nose, but Tim swats her away. “Talk to me then. I’m a dandy good listener.” “Thanks, but I’m good.” “I’m serious. Got the license to practice and everything.” “I’m pretty sure psychology licenses expire once you’re imprisoned for terrorism.” “Well, jeez, go and insult me, why don’tcha? And after I offer my help like the good citizen I am.” She stands, picking up her shopping bag. Then she digs around in her pockets and comes out with a small white card. She hands it to Tim. Harley Quinn — hit(wo)man, psychiatrist, bounty hunter, dog walker, mercenary, finder of lost things, life coach. “And that’s just the tip of the iceberg,” she says with a wink. “I’m also considering goin’ into doggie makeovers.” “I don’t know,” Tim says. “I won’t go blabbing your information to Croc or no one, cross my heart. I strictly abide by the doctor/patient confidentiality rules.” A pause. “Most of the time.” Then she looks back at the billboard of Lex, looking for the world like a vengeful Mr. Clean god. “I’m sure he won’t tattle.” “I don’t think the Justice League would think very highly of one of their own getting therapy from an ex-supervillain.” “So? Fuck them, they’re a bunch of crusty old people anyway. Come on, think about it, Timberly. I’ll even give you the friends and family discount so long as you bring doughnuts when you visit. Teen angst makes me hungry.” Tim considers it for a moment, then sighs. “I’m free on Thursday afternoons.” Harley grins. “It’s a date, bird boy.”

So it's been ten days since you've messaged me, and let me tell you, it kinda feels like the longest ten days of my life. In fact I go back to work tomorrow. Funny too, because I had hoped that during my break, maybe we'd get to chat more often than we had been. But, your silence has given me a lot of time to think, and to pray. It's also strangely given me license to say whatever I want now because if I've already lost you, then of what consequence are my words?
While I was in Mass this morning celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany, I prayed hard for guidance over what I should do about you. Should I walk away and let what we've cultivated for four months just wither and die? How can I keep shredding my heart by consistently being stonewalled by you? Who would be that crazy? Or have I just been completely wrong about you from the start?
And a thought entered my brain as though it had been spoken by someone sitting next to me: "He's trapped inside a coma made from his own fears"
I went back and read through our text messages over the past few months, like did a really deep dive. And I've come to some conclusions that I'm pretty sure are correct. Are you ready for some of my patented psychoanalysis that I know you love so much? lol
Firstly, let me just very bluntly say that I believe with every fiber in my body that you and I were supposed to meet. And I know that sounds crazy so I need you to understand that this is the very first time in my everloving life that I've ever even considered the possibility of fate being real. But when I examine the evidence it's like, how can I draw any other conclusion?
That I was admitted into —- starting Fall 2010? That you and I remember each other from —-'s class, despite me dropping it after only two lectures? That while I was gravely ill, I stayed on Zoom after one of Dr. —-'s lectures just so I could watch you talk to him about the flooding back home? (by the way, why do I think that you wear glasses?) That you tried to find me on social media after graduation and even considered sending me an email? I mean I believe in coincidence but come on
Secondly, you weren't ready for my voice recording- that's obvious. That is my bad and it's probably the one single regret I have for all of last year. You weren't ready for someone to be that open and vulnerable with you and I didn't realize it. I should've taken you at your word. Hell, maybe you weren't even ready to hear the sound of my voice. Although the wickedest part of me can't help but wonder... if you touched yourself when you heard it? Perhaps just a little bit?
Here's what I think has happened: I don't think you've ever met a girl like me before in your life. Someone who is genuinely fascinated by you and wants to know everything about you and shower you with attention (and affection, frankly). Someone who challenges you and who is your intellectual equal. Someone who really sees you. Someone who is as drawn to you as you are to her. I don't think you've ever been so tempted to let your wall down with someone else before, been so seduced by the idea of being completely vulnerable. You crave to stand naked before me… figuratively speaking of course
I think that you think about me all the time, and fantasize about me, and dream about me. I think I've wormed my way inside you in a manner that has caught you completely off guard. And I think that your feelings for me positively terrify you. So the dutiful Sergeant has quickly retreated back behind his wall, armed with the weapon of silence, vowing to shut out anyone that dare tries to enter. Especially me
But it's painfully lonely there, isn't it? Lonely to the point where you don't even have tears for it any longer, just a solid lump in your throat. Lonely to the point where it hurts to breathe because the air rushes into the hole in your heart. Lonely to the point where you'll happily work incredibly long hours just to avoid going home to a dark apartment and laying in bed alone
But the loneliness is comfortable because it's what you've always known. Even when surrounded by your big family, your college buddies, your platoon, you've always been alone, haven't you? And how dare I come along and make you feel feelings that you weren't ready for, perhaps never will be? And a part of you is trying very hard to push me away, begging for me to walk away, because not only will you go back to your familiar loneliness, but you'll be able to justify your existing feelings of unworthiness and unlovability
But how can you let me go when I might be one in a million, the biggest catch of your life, and when I quite obviously care for you too? How can you let me go when you’ve already fallen for me?
You're frozen in terror... trapped inside a coma created by your own fears
This is only my supposition of course, I could be incredibly off base here. Tell me if I am. In any case, it would make a great story
So I've prayed and ruminated on this for ten long days and this is what I've come up with
I think that we were supposed to meet, and I don't think we're done learning from each other. Not by a long shot
You expect me to give up and walk away. Well, I'm a stubborn bright side girl and I’m not going anywhere
真金不怕火炼 “Real gold does not fear the fire”
Instead, I'm gonna do the most radical, insane, dumb, patient, Catholic thing I can think of and stay right beside you. I'm going to fight for you to awaken from the coma for as long as you’ll let me. I said to you once that you're a tough nut to crack but I'm up for the challenge. And my word is my bond
You've changed the rules of the game, but I'm going to keep playing
I'm going to continue to text you just like nothing has changed, and at some point maybe I'll say something, anything, that you’ll feel compelled to respond to. Something that will shake you awake and out of your fear of me, just a brave little girl standing in front of you that cares about you deeply
Have a good week at work T, I’ll message again soon. Stay warm tonight, it’s frosty out there

hey can you maybe recommend some of your favourite fics please!!
aaaah, i'm a little behind on asks because of college but i saw this and i couldn't help but scramble to respond as soon as i found the time!!!! i'm super flattered that you're asking me for fic recommendations, but you didn't specify any fandoms or genres so i can't guarantee that any of these will be your cup of tea (feel free to shoot me another ask if you'd like to elaborate though!!!!). i'll try to be as diverse as an unapologetic angstlord can be, so here we go:
(note: while i did my best to add cws, it's still possible that something slipped past me, so please be mindful. as a rule of thumb, i'm not going to add warnings for stuff that's already depicted in canon material)
.
.
campfire in your chest (haikyuu!!, canonverse, tsukkiyama-main & kagehina-side)
Kei realizes in their second year of high school that he's probably been in love with Yamaguchi since they were ten. However hopeless he might be in handling that situation, Kei prays he's at least not as hopeless as Hinata and Kageyama. But he just might be.
four tags for you: pining, slow-burn, friends to lovers and unresolved sexual tension. this one's a classic, an old favourite of mine. i remember reading it on lunch breaks in high school while daydreaming about my crush and getting frustrated with tsukishima because "dammit, at least one of us needs to get it together and that won't be me anytime soon". also, once your done with reading this, please do yourself a favour and spare some time to check out the companion piece to this fic, "stay, stay, stay", which can be summed up simply as "meanwhile, kagehina".
.
.
a soft place to fall (jojo's bizarre adventure: vento aureo, canon divergence, narancia/trish); cw: major character death
“This is my wound, too,” Narancia softly says, eyes shadowed by so many dark lashes. He presses down over her pulse, and Trish’s heart jumps to meet it. “And this is my heartbeat. I can be brave because you’re brave.”
In the ten days between Corsica and Sardinia, Trish learns about her new power, reflects on the past, and finds her reasons.
this deserves so much attention!! i love the writing style, the character interactions— everything just feels special and different! it's been a hot minute since i watched part 5, but i have distinct and fond memories of reading this fic. it really did trish's character justice and, as a sweet bonus, it successfully got me hooked on this adorable pairing.
.
.
count the days until they blur, then keep on counting (mob psycho 100, canon divergence, gen); cw: torture, child abuse, imprisonment, starving
What Teruki wanted was power, right? What he wanted was to hurt people? Even if he didn't, he's got it now.
okay, this *may* seem bad, but it's hands down one of my all time favourite reads, not just as a fanfic. it has a happy end (worry not!), reigen being a reluctant disaster dad and teru— god, i love the way he thinks, feels, *copes* and changes as a person over the course of this fic. it shows all sides of him, the good, the bad and the ugly. he tries, he struggles, he relapses and recovers. some works just stick with you forever, and i'd be lying if i said that this one didn't change my life. like, i thought that it was the bee's knees the first time i read it and i was so mad that it had to end that i talked my friend's ear off about how unfair it was (though upon re-reading, when i was older and capable of understanding things a little better, i decided that the ending was perfect as it was). it's definitely not a work that i would recommend to someone sensitive, but i think i've established myself as someone who enjoys meaningful angst.
.
.
storm shelter (genshin impact, canon compliant, gen); cw: animal death
Three different times, over the years, Diluc and Kaeya are trapped together in the snow.
i'm a sucker for unconventional sibling dynamics and messy, conflicted feelings and this fic *provides*. it's clear that diluc and kaeya care for each other deeply, but they're both stubborn dumbasses about it (mihoyo, let these two talk again, i'm begging you). though the scenario in each snippet is somewhat similar, pov shifts to kept things fresh and prevented the story from becoming repetitive.
.
.
being a wingman is a full time job (genshin impact, canon compliant, chiluc)
“What are you doing in Mondstadt?”
“You didn’t show up this week!” Childe says. “Aether brought Hu Tao instead. She really handed it to me, but it just wasn’t the same.”
“You…” Diluc stops. “You came all the way to Mondstadt just because I didn’t show up?”
Oh?
-
Kaeya discovers Diluc has a crush and, despite not being on the best of terms with his estranged brother, takes it upon himself to be the ultimate wingman.
this isn't among my favourite pairings for either party, but rumour says that if you say "oh, chiluc is just a crackship" enough times, you'll start shipping it for real so here we are. boy, where do i start?? a lighthearted, humorous fic every once in a while is good for the soul, basically a requirement. obvious idiot/oblivious idiot is a trope that i don't think i'll ever get tired of, but making the entire story be told from wingman's pov adds some extra spice to it.
.
.
a cheap imitation (durarara, canonverse, shizaya); cw: graphic depictions of violence and gore
“Attached to your neck is a collar that will inject a poison into your jugular vein two days from now. Forcibly removing the device will also trigger the poison. Somewhere on this island is the antidote.”
His hands reached up to his neck and he felt the cool metal of the collar.
“Live or die. Make your choice.”
god. these two are so disgusting and problematic, i love them. this fic pulls no stops. the author really looked at these two dumbasses and said "yeah, the only way they'd ever get along realistically is in a life or death situatio— wait," and we gotta appreciate that. well-thought-out survival stories are a very specific niche that i've always enjoyed, so adding familiar characters into the mix can only get me more intrigued. author also snatches all my uwus for appealing to my inner neat-freak and consistently finding different ways to give the boys hygienic products. if you want drama, tension and survival with some humour sprinkled in for the ~flavour~, this is a perfect read!
.
.
i admit i got a little carried away, but honestly??? who wouldn't when talking about something as wonderful as taking something that someone has poured their heart and soul into adding onto it out of love and passion??? i'm totally setting myself up for psychoanalysis with these recs, but tastes are subjective. i hope you'll find something of interest!! ^^

Stuck.
Wasn’t planning on posting anything for DannyMay except I realized one of my WIPs literally has the same title as the theme for today, so here we are.
2.3k. Rated T for swearing. FFN || AO3
On a list of ways Vlad Masters could spend his day, he certainly never had “get stuck in an elevator with Samantha Manson” on it.
The day had started like any other; there was a ghost convention in town. Ghost hunters from all over the world came to the infamously haunted Amity Park in hopes of seeing a ghost, but seeing the new inventions from the Fentons (who were a big deal in the ghost hunter realm) and sharing their enthusiasm about ghosts with others would be satisfactory enough. (They really hoped to see a ghost, though.)
Jack and Maddie Fenton had dragged their children to the convention this year, happy they didn’t have to travel halfway across the world and their children could join them this time. They wanted Jazz and Danny to experience what they had dedicated their lives to, and to support the presentation of their newest invention. Jazz naturally brought a thick book with her to read, and a notebook for detailing her people watching (and psychoanalysis of said people). Misery loves company, so Danny managed to convince his friends into coming along and keeping an eye out. If a ghost showed up, he wouldn’t exactly be able to transform into Danny Phantom at a convention filled with ghost hunters and all their new weapons.
Vlad had shown up to keep up with appearances, and to see what pricey new inventions he could buy for Valerie. Surely, Daniel would know how to handle his parents’ weapons, but not weapons made across seas. Most importantly, though, Vlad had shown up for Maddie Fenton.
Vlad glanced around at all of the new inventions, paying close attention to the specifications of the weapons in case he encountered any as Plasmius. He checked his watch. Only ten minutes until the Fenton’s presentation. He wouldn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to stare at Maddie for an hour and watch Jack make a fool of himself. Vlad smiled to himself as he pressed the button to call the elevator. Maybe if Jack embarrassed them enough, Maddie would finally come running to him instead.
Meanwhile, Danny and his friends were walking the convention floor. Tucker was occupied with a game on his phone, as usual. Sam was on a mission to find the most dangerous looking weapon, and Danny was just trying to keep an eye on things. Sam excused herself to go to the restroom before the Fentons’ big presentation, telling Danny and Tucker she would meet them there. Once her bladder was empty and her lipstick was reapplied, she headed for the elevator and tapped her foot impatiently as she waited.
It finally arrived, and Sam started walking towards the inside until she saw Vlad Masters was already occupying the elevator. She contemplated just walking up the five flights of stairs but decided the elevator would be faster and easier. “Why hello, Samantha,” Vlad slyly greeted. She sighed as she stepped inside and turned her back towards Vlad, ignoring him and pressing the elevator button repeatedly in hopes that it would make the elevator move faster.
The elevator started moving and Sam switched to chipping some of the black paint off her fingernails when all of the sudden, the elevator stopped. It was way too soon to have gone up five floors already. “Uh oh,” she noted and tried pressing the elevator button again with no success.
“Oh, look what you did.” Vlad groaned irritatedly and pressed the call button. He waited through several rings before accepting the fact that this convention center was severely understaffed. He would have to remember to do something about that. “Well, it was nice seeing one of Daniel’s young friends, but I’m afraid I can’t stay and chat.”
“Hey! At least have the common courtesy to phase me out, too.” Sam glared at him, seeing he was about ready to ditch her when she added, “Just imagine how grateful Mrs. Fenton would be if you saved one of her son’s friends from imminent boredom.”
Vlad considered the offer, pursing his lips and deciding it would put him in good faith with the Fenton Family if he helped Daniel’s pathetic goth friend. He completely forgot about the fact that he wouldn’t even be able to tell Maddie exactly how he helped the dark child, but that wasn’t important right now. “Very well,” he grabbed her arm and was about to transform into his ghostly counterpart until he noticed a camera built into the corner of the elevator, with the little red light on signaling it was recording and pointing directly at him. He sighed and let her go. He could try to find a way to find the footage and destroy it, but he couldn’t risk getting caught at a ghost convention, of all things. Not to mention, there was likely a ghost shield up.
Sam followed his gaze when he let go of her arm and sighed, “great.” She slid down the elevator wall to sit on the floor, pulling her phone out and texting Danny in hopes he could find some way to get her out. Vlad pulled his phone out as well, and shut his eyes in annoyance as he discovered it was dead. Sam’s phone pinged and she read the message, sighing in defeat and putting her phone back into her pocket. “Danny said they are aware the elevator is stuck and are waiting for the maintenance guy to come back from his lunch break and fix it. It may be awhile.” She adjusted herself on the floor so she was at least remotely comfortable. It could take ten minutes or it could take two hours for them to be rescued.
After a few minutes of silence, Vlad smirked and spoke up. “Well, since you’re here and are forced to listen, how about we discuss how you can convince Daniel to be on my side and-”
Sam cut him off and stood up. “You’ve got to be shitting me. Danny will never want to join you! He thinks you’re creepy, which you are. I mean, you want to marry his mom and have him be your child? That’s weird. You’re a grown-ass man, you need to get over this shit already. Mrs. Fenton won’t leave her husband, especially for you. You are a moron to think otherwise.”
Vlad stared at the girl wide-eyed for a moment before opening his mouth to speak, but she beat him to it.
“Honestly, you’re so pathetic. You hurt and fight with Danny, who is old enough to be your child. Do you really have nothing better to do with your life? Don’t you have anyone else your own age to pick on? Because fixating on a child is just gross. And, you can’t even fight him yourself! No, you choose another child to do it for you. Lame.” She rolled her eyes at him.
Vlad didn’t know what to say. He was shocked into oblivion.
“Really, you don’t have anything better to do with your time or money? Do you know how much good you could do if you donated money to charities and organizations benefiting the environment? Instead, you choose to dress up like a vampire and be an asshole. Like Mrs. Fenton or any woman would fall for a guy like that. Plus, your whole vampire look? It’s so corny. Believe me, I’ve seen my fair share of vampire movies and read up enough to know they wouldn’t dress so stupidly. A cape? Really? Are you seven?”
“I-”
“You really need some hobbies. I mean, what have you even done with your life since you got ghost powers, aside from preying on and manipulating children and trying to grossly seduce a married woman who has zero interest in you? Seriously, get a life. Also, please actually stop with the whole vampire thing, you’re ruining it for me.” She sat down once again and smirked at Vlad’s agape mouth. She had the opportunity, she was going to take it.
“I mean, you aren’t terrifying or gruesome at all,” she continued, “you’re half dead and you aren’t even scary or even vaguely threatening. I’m sure more people are afraid of me than they are of you. I honestly don’t see why some of the ghosts in the Ghost Zone tolerate you; they certainly don’t respect you.” Sam picked at a scab on her arm.
“But...I’m scary! People respect me!” Vlad interjected.
“People only pretend to respect you because you’re the mayor, and you only won that by cheating. And ghosts don’t give two shits about you, the ghost who released Pariah Dark then fled at any hint of a challenge. Danny had to clean up your mess. Honestly, so pathetic.” Sam shook her head and watched as she flicked her scab across to Vlad, who flinched, and watched fresh blood rise to the injury. “And you are far from scary. My mom is more terrifying. And she’s a small woman who wears pink. Seriously, people see her coming and they move in the opposite direction. Oh gross, I guess that’s one thing I have in common with my mom…” She trailed off and made a face.
“I’ll have you know, Vlad Masters is well respected in the state of Wisconsin and Plasmius is feared in the ghost zone!”
“Survey says...no.” Sam whipped out her pocket knife from her boot and started carving some doodle into the floor. Vlad stared at the girl with wide eyes. What kind of fourteen-year-old girl carries a knife around to doodle?! “Danny beats you all the time and he’s younger than you. You’ve even been half ghost longer! Danny is less experienced and he still whoops your ass, seriously why are you so cocky?” She pointed the knife at him and he grimaced. “You’re just a pathetic little man-child who throws tantrums when he can’t get what he wants,” she rolled her eyes and finished with a “seriously go fuck yourself”.
Danny was pacing by the elevator door. It’s been 45 minutes and there’s no telling what Vlad could be doing to Sam in an enclosed space! She didn’t even have many weapons on her. He knows she’s tough and can hold her own but still! Vlad had been looking for every opportunity to get back at Danny, and holding Sam as a hostage would be a very good way of doing so.
“Come on, man he wouldn’t be stupid enough to pull something at a ghost convention,” Tucker started confidently, “er...right?”
Danny groaned, “I don’t know! I wouldn’t put it past him. God, if he hurts her, I swear-”
“I got it!” Some random maintenance guy pried open the elevator doors with a crowbar and stuck his arm inside to assist.
“Finally!” Danny ran over to the elevator and breathed a sigh of relief when he heard Sam scolding the man for touching her. At least she was alive.
The man quickly backed away and Sam popped her head out of the elevator, which was stuck between floors. “Hey Danny, hold this for a sec,” she tossed him her switchblade, which he fumbled in his hands and miraculously caught without stabbing himself or anyone else, as she climbed out of the elevator. She grabbed her knife and stored it back in her boot.
“Did he hurt you? Are you hurt? Tell me what he did I’ll-”
Sam ignored Danny’s questioning and she glared at the maintenance guy who was backing away slowly from her. “‘I got it’ my ass,” she mocked the man, “the only way you were even able to get a crowbar in the gap is because I made you one with my knife.”
“SAM!” Danny started shaking her, “are you okay?!” He looked at her arm where it was lightly bleeding. “You’re bleeding!”
“Stop. SHAKING. ME!” Sam shook him back until he cut it out. “I’m fine, this is from the other day with the Box Ghost. Vlad didn’t touch me.”
“Speaking of Vlad, is he still in there?” Tucker glanced back at the elevator.
After a few moments, out came Vlad Masters, looking as pale as a...well, you know. He was visibly shaken and looked quite disturbed. Once his feet were on solid ground, he took a deep breath and composed himself. When his eyes caught the lavender ones of the goth, he flinched. Sam smirked, while Danny and Tucker each raised an eyebrow.
“Are you alright, Mayor Masters?”
“God, Sam, what did you do to him?” Tucker quipped.
“Nothing! We just had a nice little chat is all…” Sam crossed her arms over her chest.
“I’m perfectly fine! I kept the child calm while-” Vlad tried explaining himself but with one look at Sam and one look at him, it was pretty clear who was shaken up about the whole thing. She cocked an eyebrow at him, as if to say “try me”. “I, uh, I’m fine. I gotta get going, lots of things to do…goodbye, Daniel. Daniel’s friend...Miss Manson, I’m so glad we came to an understanding-”
Sam lunged for him and he ran in the opposite direction. Danny gently held her back with one of his arms, “jeeze Sam, and to think I was worried about you in there.” He chuckled.
“You were worried about me?” Sam challenged.
Danny blushed, “I mean...we both, Tucker and I, worried, you know.”
Tucker laughed as Danny babbled, “Okay, but really, Sam. What did you do to him? He looks like he’s going to throw up!”
“Or shit his pants…” Danny added.
“Or cry…” Tucker continued.
“Funny,” she said sarcastically. Sam shrugged, “I just talked to him, gave him some of my Sam Manson charm.”
“Oh god.”
“Poor guy.”

Vy sits on a boulder close to the house, just watching the stars, that one set of stars that he knows he comes from, wondering, thinking about the small knowledge he has. About love and life, about Hayden. How he wants to spend his life with Hayden. Be his Heartlight the same way Hayden is his. Share their hearts together and be one. But, he was a different kind of dragon from Hayden and maybe Hayden's type of dragon didn't do things this way. Like sleeping, it was odd for Hayden's kind of dragon to sleep together in the same bed, as he sits there thinking, it suddenly dawns on him how he can make Hayden feel better, getting up from where he has been sitting he runs off into the woods, as he saw a junkyard with books near the Britchester and goes there. Several hours later he stands by the doorway completely dirty and disheveled, carrying a small tower of old weathered books with a big smile on his face.
“Waiting for someone?”
Chris walks up from behind Vy, having just gotten back from work, and decided to take a little walk off his own. Looking at him wondering just what he has been up to. Vy yelps in surprise, dropping all the books in his hands, as well as some trinkets, Chris realizing he startled the poor boy.
“I was thinking of how I was going to open the door...”
Chris smiles at him, leaning down picking up the books and the trinkets, handing it to him and then opens the door so he can walk inside.
“There, problem solved, and sorry for the startle, are you okay?”
He had noticed how he was looking, clearly, he had not just been on a normal walk.
“Yes! I went junkyard diving! Look at all the books I found! And some trinkets I am going to fix and give to Hayden!”
He smiles brightly, going in with the books.
“I need to clean it all first. But the books have history!”
He picks the top book and shows it to Chris, it's a book on Freudian psychoanalysis.
“See! It has a name written. Mal Sullyvan, III Year Psychology "Jung was better! September 1990.”
He smiles again looking over at Chris who looks at the book, taking it and looking at it a little closer.
“Hmh.. I remember reading this once, I think...Yeah, I remember some of this. I suggest you clean yourself too, junkyard diving might require a bath. “
He Looks around the house as he enters, feeling all three off them in Hayden's room, guessing one sleeping, one crying, and one trying his best to care for both. Vy looking at him, then looking upstairs.
“I think someone will love to read those later.” “How is Hayden? And... is Rylan home?” “Sleeping, from how he feels, he was pretty upset with himself earlier though, afraid you would leave, and yes, Rylan is home, he is in Hayden’s room along with Hayle.” “Oh... I'll go get clean and go to him... when he wakes up I... I don't want to disturb them...“
He walks upstairs slowly and carefully so the books won't fall, feeling pretty bad about what happened Chris quickly catching up to Vy, taking some off the books off his hands helping him carry them up.
“You know, I think after you get clean you should just go to him, even if he is sleeping, you won't disturb them, don't worry.” “I made him upset though... “
He looks down, letting him help carry the books, makes way to his own bedroom and places the books on his desk.
“But I will take a bath and... go to him”
He nods, fidgets a little looking down-
“I'm sorry...”
Chris walks over to Vy and hugs him gently, disregarding the fact that he probably needs to shower afterward himself. Vy looking surprised at him as he gets hugged, but he doesn’t pull away, letting himself be hugged.
“He isn't upset with you, he is upset with himself, his illness and how he feels it ruins everything, that’s all. He loves you, and he wants like you want for him, nothing but the best.”
He smiles letting him go.
“And yes, take a bath and then go to him.”
“His illness doesn't... He didn't ruin anything! I'm not leaving him unless he wants me to... I love him so much... “
He simply stares at Chris
“I brought him books... to cheer him up... I should probably take a bath, or a shower” “I think he will love the books when he wakes up and feels like reading. I'll check on them while you take a shower, and we can give you and Hayden some alone time after that.
Vy nods rubbing his head and walks to the bathroom to take a shower, Chris just watching him, before he walks out of his room, walking over to Hayden’s room where he sees Hayle sitting with both boys and image that reminds him of them the two were just children. He knows Hayden will sleep for a long while still, but he is never sure when Vy is around as the healing he does changes what would be normal. Noticing his husband looking at him he sits on the side of the bed, putting a hand on Rylan’s shoulder just to tell him he is there. Vy takes a quick shower and comes out to get dressed. Once dressed into something comfy and warm he looks through the books, cleaning them up to bring a few for Hayden. Holding "Shadow of the wind" and "Utopia for Realists" he opens the door, peaking in carefully, being spotted by Chris, who nods at him.
“Come on Rylan, we can sit somewhere else for now.”
without waiting for an answer he lifts Rylan up and walks past Vy, taking him to his room, sitting there with him, putting on a movie for them to have in the background. Hayle looking at Vy, waving him over.
“You want to take my spot, as a Hayden bed?”
Vy nods and walks over to the bed, putting the books down and between them, they manage to get Hayden moved from Hayle to him. Hayden mumbling slightly as they move him, but he calms down the instant he feels Vy, calming down again, resting peacefully in Vy’s arms.
“There, now he is home where he belongs. Just call me if you two need me, I’ll be just downstairs.”
Vy nods, gently playing with Hayden’s hair a small smile on his lips as he lets Hayden hold on to him.
“My Heartlight.”
With his free arm, he decides to read one of the books he brought, noticing Hayden looking at him for a second or two before he seemed to fall asleep with a smile on his face. Vy kissing the top off his head.
“My Heartlight, my love... rest, I won’t go anywhere.”
Hayle stops by Rylan's room, watching the two in the bed for a bit, before he walks back down to the kitchen, taking a sweet and something to drink, sighing, hoping things will work out for the best.

Asylum story, chapter 2
Hey, anyone remember this? Well, I was asked to write a second chapter for the story where Joey rats Sammy out for being gay and drops him off at an asylum. I’m not sure why I decided to do it, but the story could be worse. I might give it a proper ending if there’s enough interest. TW for homophobia, a slur, and me doing 0 research for historical accuracy.
Anyhow. Expect the first chapter of the Showdown Bandit completion fic to go up by the end of the week. I have been working on bit projects for far too long.
Sammy was knocked back to reality by a knock at the car window. It was two workers from the asylum. Joey lowered the window a crack. "One of my old gentleman callers. I was wondering if you could help him out," he explained.
"Ah, okay," one of the workers replied, as though Joey's request was simple and routine. They opened the passenger-side door. Sammy tried not to freeze- he knew he had to think fast.
"He's lying," Sammy insisted, as the two men grabbed his arms. Sammy did not go willingly, and so the two men were forced to drag him. "I'm not gay. I'm not. Let me go!" he begged as they got further from the car. The car started and drove away.
"Now, listen. We can do this the hard way or the easy way," one of the workers said to him. "I hope you'll make this easy on yourself."
Sammy was fuming, but he also realized that there was no sense in resisting anymore, so he straightened up and complied as they walked him to the building.
"There we go. Now, I know you don't expect this to be pleasant, but the more you comply with us, the more pleasant we can make it."
The inside of the building was reminiscent of a hospital setting. The two men escorted him past a secretary and then into a hallway, where they passed several closed doors before they found one with a sign that read, "empty."
"This is where you'll be staying the night. Activities won't start until tomorrow. Goodnight."
Sammy entered the cell. It had two beds, a sink, and a toilet in it. It was clean, primarily painted blue, and so looked so mundane that Sammy nearly crawled into one of the beds before he saw a figure curled up at the end of it, reading a book titled, “The Basics of Psychoanalysis.”
The man, brown-haired and looking to be in his mid-twenties, looked up at him. “Oh, hey. Didn’t hear you come in, roomie. My name’s Daniel. Yours?”
“...Sammy.”
“Nice to meet you, Sammy. Are you new here? You look new. Can I give you some advice on how to make it here?”
A shiver went through Sammy at those ominous words. “Sure...”
“You need to learn how to play their game. Your intake interview is going to be first thing tomorrow. You need to convince them that you’re gay for psychodynamic reasons- basically, because of your childhood experiences. If they think that, they’ll try to use therapy to fix you. If they think it’s biological, they’ll put you on medication. You don’t want to go on medication. That stuff speeds your heart up.”
“...And that’s bad because...?” Sammy questioned. He got the feeling that this person wasn’t telling him everything.
Daniel shivered. “There are certain things here that they do to everyone. They kind of throw the whole kitchen sink at the issue because they don't know what causes it. Two methods they use on everyone are prayer, and aversion therapy. I have a book on that. But it’s more important that you read up on psychodynamics. You should start on page 36- that’s when they start talking about homosexuality.” Daniel broke eye contact, looking forward as though haunted. “Aversion therapy is just applied behaviourism- pretty simple school of thought. Don't bother researching it- even if you did, there's no avoiding the electric shocks. And if your heart and brain are already off-kilter from the meds, well... deaths have happened. Disabilities have happened. It doesn’t happen to everyone, but I’d definitely stay off the meds.”
After Sammy thanked Daniel for the information, they both took to their books. Afterward, they talked about their lives a bit. Daniel had suggested going to the lounge and playing some chess, but Sammy wasn't up for it. Daniel left, and Sammy was asleep by the time he got back.
In the morning, Sammy received his daily schedule alongside his breakfast and a warning that if he failed to show up for any of the listed activities, he would be severely punished. First was his intake interview. It took place in what seemed to be a typical therapist’s office. Sammy sat down in the armchair and waited for the therapist to come. She was a professionally dressed but disarmingly small woman- hardly any bigger than Susie. “Hello, Mr...”
“Lawrence.”
“Lawrence. My name is Ms. Acker. I understand that you’re not here willingly.”
“No,” Sammy admitted. His plan was to keep giving her as little information as possible until it was time to tell his fake story- one he'd designed the night before based on what he'd read about psychodynamic theory. Until then, anything he said could be used against him.
“Well, sorry to hear that. Who brought you here?”
“My ex-lover.”
“Care to tell me your feelings about him?”
Sammy's gums curled back from his teeth. “That backstabbing, self-hating fucking snake thought he could choose my Goddamn life for me! I-" Sammy stopped. The woman was writing daintily on a clipboard. Right- don't give anything away.
“Interesting. Well, given the circumstances, it makes sense that you'd be angry. Though, I do think that you will eventually see that it's for the best. Can you tell me about your feelings towards him before he put you here?”
From the well-highlighted pages of Daniel’s book, Sammy had learned that, according to psychodynamic theory, homosexuality in men was thought to be caused by a lack of, or lack of attention from, the paternal figures in the man’s life during their late childhood and adolescence. It was thought that homosexuality was a way of attempting to get that missing paternal link from a romantic partner.
"He was like a father to me. He was eleven years older than me and treated me like a son. My favourite part of being with him when he let me stay overnight after we'd made love. I could fall asleep in his arms, and it was like it was healing something in me." Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. It was actually painful to make himself sound so weak in the face of Joey Drew. But, Ms. Acker was once again writing. That was a good sign.
"Is he the one who introduced you to homosexuality?"
"Yes."
Ms. Acker nodded. Sammy imagined this was like solving a puzzle to her. Sammy just needed to hand her a few more pieces and she'd be satisfied.
"Okay. Last question, Sammy: how was your relationship with your father? You said that receiving affection from your lover made you feel like you were healing. For a lot of homosexuals, that's what they're trying to heal."
Sammy looked down. "Do I have to talk about it?" Hopefully she'd just take that. Sammy loved his father and really didn't feel like dragging him through the mud. For good measure, he buried his hands in his face and shook a little. Hopefully it looked convincing.
"Oh... not yet. I think I know all I need to for now. Given your circumstances, it's reasonable that you'd want to be loved by a man, and so when your lover offered you love in exchange for sex... well, you found it hard to resist. Am I safe to assume that?"
Sammy nodded.
"Okay. Well, Sammy, I want you to understand that no matter who says what in this institute- and I know some of it won't be nice- you're not at fault for being gay. But it's an addictive and self-perpetuating coping mechanism that isn't going to help you in the long run. Now, what's going to happen is that you're going to get some appointments with one of our male psychologists so that he can help you to properly heal from your father's actions. And in the meantime, the other staff will help to rewire the associations you have with homosexual sex. Alright? You can go, now. Looks like you'll have about twenty minutes of free time before your next session."
"Thank you," Sammy said, letting only a minimal amount of bitterness slip into his voice. He got up to leave. While having his homosexuality treated like a disease was awfully frustrating, all that had been awfully... mundane.
Sammy arrived to the room of his next appointment- the feared, "behaviourist rewiring"- on time, only to find a crowd of perhaps eight other men already there. Shivers went up Sammy's spine as he saw the looks of dread on their faces. The door opened, and two large men in uniforms stepped out and herded everyone inside. Inside, there were a dozen boards with wired straps, each facing a wall. Extremely grim, several of the men took their place laying on the boards, leaving only two left standing: Sammy, who was frozen stiff, and a short little creature who had gone into panic and was trying to claw his way through the door. The two workers took a man by the arms and forced him onto a board as he kicked. "I can't get shocked!" he yelled. "I have a heart condition!"
One of the men gave him a punch to the ribs. "That's for resisting. God, I can't wait to turn this fruit into a vegetable."
Then, the men turned their attention to Sammy. "You feeling lucky, punk?" one of them said. Sammy got on the board, feeling like a coward for not doing anything for the other man. He made up for it by spitting in the worker's face as he did up Sammy's straps. The worker struck him in the face in retaliation, but it had been worth it.
"I see we have a new face in here today. So, to explain what's about to happen, we're going to project some homosexual pornography and pictures of half-dressed men onto the wall. The straps are designed to gage your arousal in a way similar to a lie detector. If you are aroused, you will be shocked. This way, your brain will be rewired to have an aversion to homosexual activity, so you will no longer wish to engage in it or to look at men sexually. In the meantime, my partner and I will be making our rounds. Anyone who closes their eyes to avoid this exercise will be shocked at the highest voltage. Alright- let's begin."
The films started. Sammy tried to block out their images, thinking of the strongest non-sexual stimuli he could think of. Being back at his old apartment with his banjo and a hot drink as the snow fell outside. The fur of his cat between his fingers. His anger at Joey. His frustration with the world. His desire to be home. None of it worked. The shocks coursed from his wrists and ankles into his core. He could feel his organs- heart, brain, lungs, everything- shaking with electricity.
Sammy wasn't sure how long the exercise lasted- he just knew that it had been a long time, and afterward he felt exhausted. The man who'd complained of a heart condition didn't leave with the rest- he was unconscious. Hopefully just unconscious, anyhow. Sammy felt defeated. Tricking a therapist was easy- how was he supposed to trick a machine that could read his bodily cues? He supposed that he'd just have to hope that the treatments actually worked somehow so that he could get the hell out of this place. Or, he thought, looking out a window at the barbed-wire fence, he could try to dig his way out.

Tell Me You Love (Dangerous) [Complete Series]
Billy Russo/Reader
The First Ones
Hey, guys! This is me trying to get back on track. It’s nothing with a clear plot, more like something from my stream of consciousness and trying something new. But it’s something I still want to share, maybe some of you like it. Thank you for still staying here, it means a lot to me!
This also has a song behind it, loosely. It’s Imagine Dragons’ I Don’t Know Why. This is also part of @thecoffeeshopforwriters challenge “Music Is The Key”.
Words: 2 561
Tumblr media
“We could be strangers in the night
We could be passing in the shadows
We couldn't be closer if we tried
When we're caught in the headlights
We could be faces in the crowd
We could be passing in the shadows
Upping the risk of being found
When we're caught in the headlights
 Dangerous
Your love is always dangerous
And now I'm lost in us”
 Imagine Dragons – I Don’t Know Why
I.
(the first meeting)
Billy
He knows when he looks at you that this isn’t the first time you two meet. But he also knows that you won’t remember. Still, his eyes narrow under the weight of all the years between then and now.
He is alone in the middle of people.
The wind cries in the trees and whips his sore skin.
A trail of new blood runs down the right cheek, from the side of his bruised forehead down to the definite, exposed jawbone. It tries to make it on the neck but drops down, like liquid coins.
He opens his mouth, tries his dislocated jaws. They crack, but he doesn’t even flinch. His hand becomes stained with the blood on his face, his knuckles are hurting and red too.
The wrists, bones like still growing bird’s. He hasn’t grown to the measures of an adult man yet.
His eyes find you; you stand by your bike and look at him sitting on the railing, a bag by his feet. Like a young bird, fallen from the nest.
Before you can do anything else than share your worry about him in your eyes, there comes a redhead to pull you away, screaming something about being late from the movie. It’s visible in your eyes; you don’t care about the movie now.
Little does he know, you never stopped thinking about that young bird on the railing in torn black jeans.
When you see him, you know him. You smile and do what you didn’t do then; you go to him.
 ()
 II.
(the first date)
You
The young bird is an eagle now. Agile, sharp, enigmatic.
He sits beside you but still in front of you. He’s everywhere, so skilled he is. He has eyes, ears, even hands everywhere. He can spread, hears everything, knows every single surface and how the ground moves under his feet on the street nearby.
Officially, it’s the third time you see him. He has seen you more often than you him, but this is the third time you see each other like this.
“I was waiting for a while, you know,” he says just to make a remark. There’s a smile on his lips.
“I’m not late,” you answer calmly, his smile getting on your lips.
“Time is money, darling.”
His elbow is against the surface of the table, the material of his dress shirt hugs his arm. He looks peaceful, confident, calm – like he enjoys himself.
“If you were waiting for me for a while…” You lean your own elbows against the table to talk to him, closer than before. It makes his smile turn into a smirk. “What made you wait for me so eagerly?”
“This isn’t the time nor the place for a psychoanalysis.”
He sees you won’t give in. You’d never give in.
“The first time wasn’t so bad, neither was the second,” he eyes the bottle of beer by his hand and then you. “Third time’s the charm?”
You don’t stop smiling. He doesn’t stop either.
“So, this is a date?”
“I never said that, you did. Maybe you want this to be a date?” he tilts his head a little when his hand finds the bottle and brings it to his lips. It makes a low sound when it meets the table again.
“I didn’t say so.”
“You got yourself in a trap already. If you want this to be a date, then we can agree on that this is a date,” now his other elbow is on the table, just like yours.
“But I never said that.”
“Deal is a deal, darling.”
You lean your cheek on your shoulder as you look at him. Still the same look in those dark eyes. He meets your eyes and shamelessly touches your hand on the table.
 ()
 III.
(the first kiss)
Billy
He walks you out. It’s dark, the ground glimmers with small puddles, they take light from the streetlights.
“I think there’s a free cab,” you say just to have something to say. He looks at you so intensely that it’s hard to escape that look. It’s dangerous, he knows what he’s doing. And not only to you.
He lets his right hand find its way around you, fingers placing themselves on your side; not too high, not too low, it’s a perfect place.
“You don’t need a cab,” he says, turns you around and starts to walk you away from the other people waiting for a cab. He feels you looking up at him but doesn’t let himself even crack a smile. He’s serious.
He wants this.
Not only you, this.
Since the day he saw you staring at him by your bike.
You look over your shoulder to see him still sitting there, looking down at the torn knee of his jeans. But he sees you; you don’t know he does, but he sees. Jumps down on the ground, hisses in discomfort and walks away with his bag on the hurting shoulder.
He doesn’t miss how you look at his car. There has been a thank you mumbled from between your lips, you lean against him when you walk past a group of loud guys. Billy glances towards them but then his attention is on you; he turns his head towards you, and you meet his eyes.
His free hand goes to the pocket of his suit jacket, takes the car keys, opens the doors. That’s when you turn to meet the black Rolls-Royce. It’s elegant, massive in majestic way, safe…
Just like its driver.
There comes a hand on your cheek, turning you back to him. His eyes take the lights the same way with the puddles on the ground. They’re so dark brown you get lost but the lights, they talk to you.
You give him a small nod.
He is closer than a moment ago. Then even closer…
His lips on yours. Owning, but somehow so tender. Your hand goes on the back of his neck, and he holds you to him. Presses you against him so tightly you feel the warmth of his body through his clothes.
He lets go of you only to let you sit on the passenger seat. When he’s in the car, his lips are back on yours.
It feels right. Something wanted for so long without fully knowing it. A feeling that hasn’t been handled.
 ()
 IV.
(the first time)
You
It rains. It has drenched his white dress shirt. You come from the bathroom to see him standing in the balcony, how the material of his shirt has clung to his skin, revealing his muscular back.
You spend a while just looking at how Billy Russo stares in the rain. You don’t know what he sees there, what he hears but you know that you wouldn’t probably see and hear the same. He’s a man who cannot be read like a book. But you see a man with thoughts; some he shares, some remain unshared. You’re okay with how it is.
Looking at him you’re more than okay with how he is. The young bird is an eagle now, and you find yourself willing to help him to set himself free. Find yourself waiting for the share you’ll get.
“Billy, come back inside. You’ll catch a cold.”
Without saying a word, Billy comes back from the balcony. You see how he turns around, leaves the rain behind him and with a few man’s steps he makes it back inside, closing the door behind him.
He puts his arms around you and pulls you in a passionate kiss. His lips taste like rain. You savor the taste for as long as the kiss goes on, until he breaks it with a teasing grin on those rainy lips.
“You care about my health,” he blinks his eyes open, “- it’s flattering.”
“Hmm, well,” you grin back and pull him back in another kiss by the front of his damp shirt, “I care about you.”
I still do, you think when he carries you on the sofa. His damp shirt is on the floor before he comes on top of you, your hands on his muscular back before the first kiss on your neck.
And you want more than just set him free. You want him.
“Billy, touch me.”
 ()
 V.
(the first fight)
Billy
He knows he has said a hurtful thing. He knows it by the look on your face. It doesn’t fade, it gets deeper, darker, makes his head scream.
He comes for a touch, but you don’t let him. He tries again, you push him away with your eyes. The way you look into his eyes, it tells him to stay away. He does the only thing he can; he stays away.
The distance between you and him feels too long; it’s like you won’t hear his words, no matter what he says.
He tries.
His head screams to him to fix it. You did this, fix it.
The words you say to him are so short, but they hold more meanings than anything else could. They tell him more. And he cannot do anything but comply.
“Get out.”
Somewhere in the depths of your mind you know he didn’t mean it the way he said it. After being with him for solid months, you know he’s not a talker. He’s not the one to talk about feelings.
The damage has already happened, and right now you don’t want to see a glance of him.
“I want you to understand – “
“I want you to get out of here, Billy!”
It’s the last time he hears you saying his name that day.
When he closes your door behind him and stands in the hallway, he thinks it might also be the last time you ever say his name.
 ()
 VI.
(the first “I love you”)
You
It takes eight days. You want him to understand, see can he understand he did wrong. He had told you he was sorry when he said it, but so hard person to read he is, you didn’t know.
You had to be sure.
You lean against the door when you open it for him. It’s not wide enough for him to walk inside, you look at him cheek against the door when he stands there. The lights get stuck on his raven, perfectly put hair. He has a blood red rose with him. Something in his eyes.
Guilt.
Doubt.
Pain.
You didn’t know Billy Russo felt any of that.
Confidence.
A decision.
He takes his jacket off.
“Don’t push me away.”
You don’t do anything that could possible tell him you’re pushing him away. Simply because that’s not your intention.
He comes close, and you let him. Your eyes follow him as he walks, into his dark eyes that has met yours. He has the rose still in his hand, now he gives it to you. When you take it, it stays between your bodies. There’s a smile on your face.
“I love roses…”
A smile rises on his lips. That smile was on them when you first saw him.
He moves his head, leans a little closer. There’s enough distance for his words to fit between your lips.
“I love you.”
He meets your lips with his before you can say a word. With the kiss, you know he means it. It goes through your chest, and when you pull away, reluctantly, to breathe, you let it fall from your lips.
“I love you too.”
 ()
 VII.
(the first separation)
You
He has made it clear, hasn’t kept it as a secret. You have known it since the day you became official with him, even before.
He’s going away.
He’s talking about months.
And you promised him you won’t cry.
You can’t keep that promise.
You don’t cry out loud or let the tears stream down your face, but they’re there. They burn your eyes. You can’t deny how much you care about him, you love him, and the idea (the so small, so real, so possible) of how he could die – it burns your eyes. Looking at him so ready and sure.
You’re proud of him. You’re happy to hear he has found something he wants to do with his life.
But you’re scared.
He’s a man who could kill another with just looking at them. But he’s a target, just like everyone else out there. It can anytime be him. That young bird on the railing… he has come back. You see the same boy, the same cuts and bruises, how scrawny he is. This time the young bird smiles. So confidently it makes you take a breath.
“Don’t cry for me, darling.”
“I’m not crying.”
“You are. I promise, I’ll come back.”
“I know you will. I have your word.”
He nods. “Good. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
One kiss and a hug after he turns his back to you and then, a few heartbeats later, he’s gone.
You’re left there, alone in the middle of people.
The sounds of people passing by cry in your ears and whip your sore skin.
It’s sore from love and promises – from longing.
 ()
  VIII.
(proposal)
Billy
It takes 243 days. On his second day at home he looks at you change the water for the roses you have in the kitchen. He sits on his chair, still full cup of coffee in front of him on the table. The apartment has been lonely without him, quiet and the chair he usually sits on has been empty. No one has been sitting on it, like it could bring him luck. Living together, it’s still a new thing, happened only a month before he left for duty. He still hasn’t lost the shine of it. Doubts he ever will.
He surely will never lose the shine of you. There’s something in you; the way you look at the roses as you take care of them, make sure to cut them just the right amount. You nurture them like living beings. Sometime before Billy would’ve thought it is nonsense. But now, nothing is nonsense to him.
He doesn’t need back to the life he had.
You don’t see the young bird anymore. The eagle has grown even more. You meet his eyes, smile to him. Only then he smiles back at you.
“Tell me about them,” he says and welcomes you to sit on his thigh, puts his arm around you. He looks up at you and blindly takes the still steaming cup of coffee.
“The roses?” you ask and get an answer that is only a messy hum in the cup.
You tell him about the flowers until Billy pulls you in a kiss, telling he doesn’t want to hear about them anymore. He wants to hear about you.
~
The blanket doesn’t cover him properly when he gets up on his elbow. You still lay on the bed, running your hand down his arm all the way down to the hand that just squeezed the headboard of the bed mere minutes ago.
“Would you be ready for it?” he asks. Voice silky like the darkness in the bedroom.
“For what?”
Your frown when he’s silent.
He looks into your eyes in the darkness.
“Marry me.”

The Dreamer by Whatwashernameagain an Analysis? Chapter 2! Part 1
All portions:
Chapter 1: Part 1 // Part 2 // Part 3 // Part 4
Chapter 2: Part 1 // Part 2 // Part 3 // Part 4
The Dreamer
@whatwashernameagain
Guys! We finally made it to Chapter 2!!!! Prepare for the feelz!
As always, Spoilers under cut.
So… Lets recap what we know about Roman before we dig too deep into Chapter 2… We know that Roman is overzealous, hopeful to the point of naivety, innocent, sassy, playful/teasing, endearing, misguided and moral. He sees the good in everyone (especially Logan). Roman cares for each person individually, while Logan cares more for humanity as a whole. Lastly, Roman is pretty much the embodiment of hope for Logan and maybe the world. No pressure.
Okay… That’s pretty much what we know about Roman’s personality thus far… and he’s only been mentioned a few times… Not bad, not bad. Let’s get to it!
Eva wastes no time jumping right into Roman’s back story, though I’ll admit the first time I read this it gave me a bit of whiplash. We did just come out of a very dramatic scene, after all. Still as usual there is a lot to be said in the first para. First off, drawing the reader in within the first few lines is always a great idea and she manages it with; “Young Roman was shaking with righteous anger. How dare this – this fiend targeted the company of his father?” (Whatwashernameagain). This should send us into a whirlwind of emotions. We learn a lot about Roman and Roman’s father with these two sentences. First off, we see that Roman is very quick with his emotions which is not surprising at all, judging from what we have learned about him. However, when he uses the word ‘fiend’ in italics the inflection nods towards his overzealous nature which honestly warms my heart a bit. Once again, Eva is very strategic with her italics and beautifully so. We can assume that this ‘fiend’ is none other than one ‘Utilitarianist’ judging from the context of the previous chapter and the rivalry that we are already familiar with. But this begs the question: Why would Logan target Roman’s father unless he is a bad man? Well, I’d say the answer is in the question… But Roman obviously doesn’t believe that.
“He was the hardest working man in the world! His idol, his hero! He was donating to charity, pursuing a career in politics to support the attempts of the republican party to protect this great country’s safety and now he had to deal with an investigation into the state of his breeding facilities” (Whatwashernameagain).
This makes me… so sad. Roman obviously idolizes his father. He is a young man here, years before The Dreamer and it certainly shows in his naivety and innocence. As children many of us are fed information that our parents wish for us to believe or are simply told in order to stop us from questioning this or that. Some parents do this consciously while most don’t even think about it. It’s like when your parent tells you that its illegal to drive at night with the cab light on… I don’t know if this is going to shock you but its not illegal. At least not here. But their parents no doubt told them that when they were younger to keep them from messing with the light and distracting them; then they grew up believing it and now they tell their children the same thing. Or my mother use to tell me that her first husband died in a car accident because she didn’t want me to know she was divorced… Turns out he lives in Cali with a wife and three kids… but questioning her about him hurt her so she made up a lie to protect herself and me. Its not surprising that poor innocent Roman would be fed similar lies to help idolize his father.
The thing is… there comes a point in time in every adult’s life that they look at their parent and reality hits them so hard in the face they stumble. The person you thought your mom or dad was isn’t exactly who they are. For example, I idolized my own father and I of course still love him very very much; but growing up I thought he had the answer to everything and was an outstanding person. He had very few flaws (mostly just promiscuity)… Then about the time I turned twenty-four I watched as he went into a rage about abortions and how pro-choicers are idiots when most of them are pro-life but ‘just want attention’. It took me by surprise and when I showed him the statistics that the majority of ‘pro-life’ and ‘pro-choice’ both agreed that there should be exceptions to most abortion issues (“Abortion”). He chose to deny the fact and continued to hate the opposite party simply because they labeled themselves something other than what he labeled himself, despite believing in the same concepts…. I’m getting way off topic… Sorry… I realized in that moment that the man I idolized was an ignorant man who was content with his choice in being ignorant. It was a shock… The image of him I had painted my whole life came crashing down. It was alright of course, we just don’t talk about politics anymore… well… not often anyways. My point is… I’m curious to see when Roman has the same realization that his father is not the man Roman expects him to be… Truth be told; our parents can never live up to their children’s expectations. We set the bar too high and they are only human, doing the best they can… The good ones anyways XP
Again! Getting off topic! Sorry! Back to the analysis….
Roman sees his father as everything he strives to be. His father is a hard worker, who gives to the needy, is charismatic (a politician), a protector. No doubt, Roman was conditioned to see these things; conditioned to believe that this is what a ‘real’ man looks like. A conditioning that most of us have experienced. Girls that don’t dress pretty enough, or don’t like the color pink, or rather play with a football than a barbie; or boys who love pink, enjoy makeup, don’t enjoy sports… I can’t tell you enough how much crap my husband gets because he rather read a book than play football, especially when he was in school (he’s 6’4” and almost 400lbs). Its wrong!!! Here Roman’s father stands, the picture-perfect image of everything Roman is expected to be… of course he’s going to fixate on the good, rather than accepting the bad. Looks like Logan isn’t the only one in denial.
This denial is cemented when Roman begins to talk about the ‘caramel colored Highland cow’ that his father had given him when he was twelve. Roman uses this as an example of how his father cares so deeply for animals…. -sigh- My poor baby… All of this is an indication of unconscious rationalization. Yup, you guessed it I’m jumping back into psychoanalysis and Freud. YAY! Rationalization is when an individual avoids feelings of displeasure by explaining their own loses and failures as someone else’s fault (Rivkin, Julie). In this case, Roman isn’t even aware that he is doing it; hence the denial. Instead of subconsciously accepting the fact that these investigations could be in the right he chooses to blame the investigation of victim blaming…. Well, the investigations and The Utilitarianist.
Though Roman’s us of terms such as ‘hard-working Americans,’ ‘terrorist’ and ‘gross injustice’ in the next few paragraphs really boldens the image that Roman eventually grows into; the one we saw in Chapter 1. As if Roman should be wearing the stars and stripes on his cape, flapping in the wind behind him. A whole-hearted apple pie American! These terms are a direct parallel to a lot of the Republican campaigns throughout the last few years. Terms like this tend to be used to sew discontent and fear into people, making them easily controllable. Honestly, it’s a great symbolism on how America’s masses are being persuaded to follow the path of anger and certain politicians that I will not name. Roman, here is the picture-perfect representation of America, his father a Republican extremist (like many politicians lately) who has fed him so many lies and promises… provided pretty things to satisfy him temporary and allow him to do as he pleases without any consequence to himself. Sound familiar?
**Personal note: I have nothing against the Republican party. I agree with the platform on a few issues as well as with the Democratic platform. However, anything to its extreme is a bad thing. Thank you for coming to my Tedtalk.
“Roman could not stand for this! It was gross injustice! He wanted to help, to support his father and show him that he could trust him! He was almost twenty now – a man – and it was time he finally managed to prove himself!” (Whatwashernameagain).
Within the same paragraph we see Roman’s need to win his father’s approval. We also see the societal gender norm of being ‘a man’ once more. There is a lot to unpack here. Roman wants to show his father that he can ‘trust him.’ Which wouldn’t be something a normal person would be concerned about unless there was a sense of past abuse; which judging by the rationalization is no doubt the case. This implies that Roman has always been informed that he’s not good enough, or that he is incompetent. This small sentence shows us a side of Roman that we have yet to see… his insecurity. Sure, as The Dreamer he hides it well… He must, he’s the hope and dreams of the world, he can’t afford insecurities. But deep down he is just a child wanting his father’s approval. He wants to be needed, needs to be accepted. He wants to prove to this man that he’s not worthless… Hmm… Kinda sounds like a certain villain we know doesn’t it? Actually, Logan and Roman have a lot more in common here than meets the eye. Imagine what Roman feels here… The desperation, the loneliness. Perhaps he feels as if there is no one else in the world that could possibly understand how he feels. He is no doubt surrounded by staff but when it comes down to it, he is just as alone as Logan is. Both using their pain to change the world; both defining themselves by the work that they do… by their usefulness. Once again, Roman focusing on the individual (his father) while Logan focuses on the masses. He and Logan share the same goal, the same hurtles, and the same pain… and yet somehow ended up on opposite sides of the coin…
We see more of Roman’s insecurities in the next paragraph, underlining the emotion; proving to the reader that it runs far deeper than we would first assume. He states that he tends to ‘ask the wrong question’ and makes ‘stupid suggestions’. However, the questions he asks are regarding the wages of the workers, and the suggestions involve the wellbeing of animals. The dimension this contrast provides really rounds out Roman’s character. As a reader we see that these questions are anything but wrong and the suggestions are far from stupid, but we are a mute onlooker that can do nothing to change the scene unfolding before us. These words paint Roman’s heart as much as his pain. We see his concern for his father’s employees and the animals as well. We see that he cares for every living being, bringing up back to the fact that he focuses on the individual, reinforcing this concept. At the same time, he doesn’t see it himself. I’ve learned early on in life that if you are told the same thing over and over in your life time by someone you look up to… you are bound to believe it and the best and worst thing about belief is that once you have it… its hard to let go.
“Shame rose into Roman’s cheeks as he remembered his silly question about fencing in a meadow for their calves in their Laredo facility to play in with their mothers. He’d just remembered how much Nugget had always enjoyed jumping around with them. Of course, he should have known they needed to be separated from their mothers after the first day to avoid losing the milk they sold. It was necessary, he guessed. So, they’d said” (Whatwashernameagain).
So, they’d said… -sigh- Three little words and yet… so much pain. I don’t really need to explain the whole being told something repeatedly etc etc etc. Because I just did; but the fact that Eva ends the paragraph so simply is so elegantly impactful… I just… wanted to bring attention to it.
It also serves to point out that despite the fact that Roman rationalizes his father’s mistreatments and dirty deeds, he has his doubts. “It was necessary, he guessed.” Implies that Roman doesn’t truly believe this despite what he’d been told (along with the ‘so they’d said’). It adds even more depth to the man because while we are looking at a young Roman with no self-confidence he knows right from wrong. At least, deep down he does. It is the environment around him that is forcing this sense of morality to be buried deep deep down to the point to he can hardly recognize it… but its there. This also makes for some great foreshadowing. The small rebellion of nothing but a seed of a thought will no doubt grow into more.
Tangent: People always talk about how changing your thoughts are a sure-fire way to change your life and it is true. In fact, there is scientific research to prove it. No, I’m not talking about some kind of poll or mental screening. It’s much bigger than that. Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese scientist and doctor of alternative medicine, conducted an experiment to try and discover how our thoughts can physically affect the world around us (“Water”). He took samples of water and exposed them to written and spoken words and music to see how thoughts and feelings affect physical reality (“Water”). Dr. Masaru Emoto discovered that crystals formed in frozen water reveal changes when specific, concentrated thoughts are directed towards them such as ‘love’, ‘thank you’, ‘I hate you’ (“Water”). The findings were unbelievable especially when you consider the fact that 90% of our bodies are made of water. Water that changes in reaction to thoughts. The implications of this research create a new awareness of how we can positively impact the earth and our personal health (“Water”). Dr. Emoto has been called to lecture around the world as a result and has conducted live experiments both in Japan and Europe as well as in the US to show how indeed our thoughts, attitudes, and emotions as humans deeply impact the environment (“Water”). I learned this many years ago watching the documentary ‘What the Bleep Do We Know?’ which I highly recommend… But if you would like to watch the short clip on water molecules and thoughts you can find it here.
I bring it up because Roman’s rebellious thoughts have a far more drastic impact than he probably assumes. We shape ourselves to our thoughts… Which only intensifies the foreshadowing here.
Once again, in the next para we see Roman’s rationalization in full swing as he talks about his father having a difficult time with him. We also see the reinforcement of social norms when it comes to gender: ‘he lacked a sense of ruthlessness a strong man needed to improve the world’, ‘he was a bad hunter, had the wrong interests’, ‘spoke too softly or loudly’ (Whatwashernameagain). I’m not going to go into it too much because I’ve already touched on the ridiculousness of this… and because forcing social gender norms onto someone like this piss me off like no other and I’m not turning this into a big rant and pulling it away from Eva’s amazing work! I’ll just say that its wrong to assume what it means to be a man or a woman… why isn’t just being a person enough?! and leave it at that. We also see more of Roman’s idolization of his father; his need for approval and his distaste for Logan and his so-called victim-blaming (which is rationalization once more).
The sudden shift from such a somber tone to the next paragraph proves to be refreshing and provides Roman with a small burst of passion we know and love! Eva writes: “Roman had one thing going he was good at, though. He was strong, brave and determined. Someone needed to put a stop to this renegade liberal, and it might as well be him. It wasn’t like all the other things he’d tried and failed at. This time, he felt a calling to fight the war of the righteous” (Whatwashernameagain)!
This provides us with a small glimpse of The Dreamer we’ve come to know in Chapter 1. Roman may not have confidence in himself but the image of who he wants to be is another story. For those of you who don’t know I worked in Law Enforcement for six years and its things like this that remind me of some of the good parts of the job. Roman is relatable here to be. I’ve known a lot of officers who are very different outside of the uniform, myself included. We have insecurities, weaknesses, ticks, that all seem to fade away when we put on that uniform. You become a different person, a stronger person; someone you look up to… and looking up to yourself is an amazing feeling… its like your indestructible… you can do anything! Officer Liz and the Liz writing this analysis are two different people. Yes, we share the same experiences and likes and dislikes but… I’m just a regular person, staying up too late, worried about laundry and dishes… while she… she’s a hero who protects everyone, always has a solution, and never lets her emotions get the better of her. Roman is getting his first taste of the high that comes with the alter ego. He sees the Dreamer in that instance, though he refers to himself because in a way they are the same person… The difference is, is that The Dreamer has already won his father’s approval and pride… Roman has not.
*******
I will have to end it there, friends. It is way past my bed time, and I have to be up in a few hours for work. Thank you for joining me though and I hope to see you in Part 2!

Dean’s Jungian Shadow Arc in S14 - Confronting the Internal Father (2x22 to 14x20)
“This meeting with oneself is, at first, the meeting with one’s own shadow. The shadow is a tight passage, a narrow door, whose painful constriction no one is spared who goes down to the deep well. But one must learn to know oneself in order to know who one is”
(Jung, The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious 1991: p21)
Jung believed that the psyche was composed, in part, of a relation to “archetypes” (shared human psychic formations). One of these is the archetype of the father.
He distinguishes between the actual father (i.e. your Dad) and the “imago” of the father (a term he borrowed from Freud). That means, the psychological internalised construct of the father, which partly resides in the unconscious, and which is not identical to your real Dad, because it’s about your childish and foundational perception of them, but, also, for Jung (not Freud) it is linked to the archetypal (or mythic) father. The father archetype (for Jung, who has a gendered perception of the world rooted in his time-period) is about power and control. And when someone subconsciously over-identifies with the father-archetype, this results in out-of-control power fantasies:
"The danger is just this unconscious identity with the archetype, the more a father identifies with the archetype, the more unconscious and irresponsible, indeed psychotic ... he ... will be"
(Jung, 1906-1916 writings collected as Freud and Psychoanalysis: 1961:p316).
So, subconsciously over-identifying with the father-imago has negative consequences for a person, and those around them.
Let’s talk Dean, The Shadow and Dean’s Daddy Issues.
Remember this? (Gods but the colour palette was gorgeous back then).
This is Dean shooting Azazel, the yellow-eyed demon who killed his mother, Mary Winchester, with the Colt in 2x22 All Hell Breaks Loose Part II.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He does it with his father, John Winchester’s spirit’s help (released from Hell):
Tumblr media
But, when I say help, remember that, symbolically, John has also been mirrored to Azazel, by means of Azazel’s possession of John (1x22 Devil’s Trap):
Tumblr media
Hooboy -  Daddy issues right out of the gate. That’s not news to any of us. The whole show is about “wayward sons”, after all.
Fast foward twelve years, and this is Dean (in the role of The FatherTM) almost shooting Jack, his own adopted Nephilim son (who also represents his child-self) with the Hammurabi, the mystical gun Mark II, which Chuck forged and named after an ancient Babylonian law which codifies “an eye for an eye” (i.e. a “Revenge Gun”TM):
Tumblr media
Jack the Nephilim, whose eyes glow yellow when he is in his power, and who has (apparently) killed Mary Winchester (again):
Tumblr media
(Jack in 13x14 Good Intentions)
Notice that both scenarios - Dean, mystical gun, yellow-eyed supernatural being who killed his mother - take place in a graveyard.
Mary is dead twice (at least as far as Dean is concerned) and her death haunts the scenes.
Chuck has deliberately set up the second scenario to mirror the first (he is, in my view, testing Dean, the way he tested Abraham).
At this moment, in Moriah, we could say Dean is possessed by his Shadow, in the form of the father archetype, the Ghost of John Winchester, in his subconsious. He is ready to act out John Winchester’s revenge quest redux, and in doing so, to do violence all over again to his child-self, in the form of Jack, who symbolises child-Dean in this moment.
A repetition of the damage done to Dean himself as a child; who was forced, by the tragedy of Mary’s death, and his own father’s traumatic revenge-quest, to grow up too fast, is playing out before our eyes.
Jack-the-mirror, who lost his own mother at birth, and looks twenty-something but is only two, kneels, a willing sacrifice, in the role of child-Dean, before his father, adult-Dean, who is shadow-possessed by John’s Ghost, ready to be murdered, just as John “murdered” Dean’s childhood.
“The psychological rule says that when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside as fate. That is to say, when the individual remains undivided and does not become conscious of his inner opposite, the world must perforce act out the conflict and be torn into opposing halves.”
(Carl Jung, Collected Works “Christ: A Symbol of the Self”).
Jung suggests we are subject to “fate” (i.e. our own unconscious forces taking control of our actions) when we do not confront our Shadow.
Ties in beautifully to Supernatural’s larger theme of fate vs free will, right?
Now, back then, when Dean shot yellow-eyed demon No 1, Azazel, Dean was (as his subconscious taunted him at the time) “Daddy’s blunt little instrument” (3x10 Dream a Little Dream of Me)....
Back then, Dean obeyed his father and called him “Sir”,  “...following Dad’s orders like a good little soldier” (Sam in 1x10 Asylum). Sammy was the rebellious one.
When Dean stood up to his Dad, it wasn’t for himself, it was to protect Sam:
Tumblr media
(1x20 Dead Man’s Blood).
Dean’s obedience was linked to his angel-engineered role as the Michael vessel (God’s obedient son) whilst Sam’s rebelliousness was linked to his equally engineered role as the Lucifer vessel (God’s rebellious son).
They ripped up that script and wrote their own ending in 5x22 Swan Song, but, while Sam said “Yes” to Lucifer (his Shadow-self) and beat the Devil, Dean said “No” to Michael.
S14 is the season in which Dean, having said “Yes” to AU!Michael in order to beat Lucfier (again) in 13x23 Let the Good Times Roll, undertakes his own Shadow-work.
Dabb’s Ouroboros narrative is in full swing.
Back then, John’s revenge quest, to get the yellow-eyed demon who killed Mary Winchester, became Dean’s mission too. He internalised it (even before he knew about Azazel). Sam wanted to get out of hunting, Dean was driven to follow in his father’s footsteps (whatever his real feelings and desires were, he buried them to follow the “family business”).
Here is Young!Dean in Bad Boys (9x07) looking out of the window at Young!Sam in the Impala, about to give up his happiness at Sonny’s and his young love with Robin in order to put his Dad’s way of life (hunting/ revenge), and his brother (who needs him) first:
Tumblr media
One way a child deals with a parent who is hurting them is to want to become them, to idolise them and to believe that they’re right (Dad’s car, Dad’s music, Dad’s machismo, Dad’s heterosexuality, Dad’s way of drinking and squashing down emotion).
DEAN: “We have the coolest Dad in the world.  He’s a superhero.” (3x08 A Very Supernatural Christmas).
Jung would say Dean internalised a strong identification (partly conscious, partly unconscious) with the father imago.
Dean’s been on a long, long journey to get out from under his father’s shadow. We’ve seen that struggle over many seasons.
AU!Michael in Dean’s head in S14 represented the repressive ghost of John Winchester embodied as a destructive archangel in Dean’s mind, i.e. serious crunch time for Dean’s psyche - things coming to a real crisis point for him, psychologically.
Dark!Kaia makes the parallel in 14x03 The Scar (just hear “John Winchester” for “him”):
KAIA: “You’re no different from him. Threats, violence anything to get what you want.” DEAN: “I am nothing like him.” KAIA: “Yeah you are: you always have been!”
You can read some of my previous meta on Dean’s struggle with AU!Michael as his repression/ the Ghost of John Winchester here (which also emphasises that one aspect of John’s repression of Dean is, in subtext, the repression of Dean’s queerness):

In 14x02 we get this shot of Dean facing his mirror-self, AU!Michael, and Michael tells him, “I own you!”
Tumblr media
In 14x10, Dean, desperate to contain AU!Michael, manages (with Sam and Cas’ help) to lock him in a fridge-locker in his own mind:
Tumblr media
And he says, “I am the cage!”
Dean then builds a Ma’lak box and intends to lock himself in it and throw himself (and AU!Michael with him) to the bottom of the ocean. Yikes. At the start of 14x12 Prophet and Loss, he dreams that he is alone, and terrified, in that very box:
Tumblr media
Sam says to him about this plan (14x12 Prophet and Loss):  “But what you’re talking about is far worse than death. Michael’s an archangel. He could literally keep you buried in a coffin, alive, forever.”
Remember Dean also described his possession by AU!Michael as like “drowning” over and over (14x03 The Scar):
DEAN: “I don’t remember most of what Michael did with me because I was under water. Drowning. And that I remember. I felt every second of it - clawing, fighting for air. I thought I could make it out but I couldn’t: I wasn’t strong enough.”
Now hear what is happening, psychologically...
Dean’s subconscious, his Shadow-self (aka AU!Michael representing the Ghost of John Winchester) i.e. Dean’s own self-repression and over-control, both inherited from John’s impact on him, is saying to Dean “I own you” and “I am the cage”, you will be buried in a coffin, alive, with me forever. You are under water and you can’t make it out.
That’s pretty scary right? Dean is trapped by himself (by the traumatic internalised impact of his past and his consequent over-identification with his father).
If this were IRL, we’d have given Dean the name of a good therapist, a long time ago. But it’s Supernatural, so instead Dean gets to confront the ghost of his father, John Winchester, in the flesh, in 14x13 Lebanon. He wishes on the magic pearl to get “Michael out of my friggin’ head” and lo and behold John Winchester magically appears before him (cemeting the symbolism of AU!Michael in Dean’s head representing/ mirroring John Winchester).
Tumblr media
Dean gets to hear his Dad say, “You are a grown man and I am incredibly proud of you.” Dean gets to say to Sam, that he wouldn’t change anything: “I’m good with who I am. I’m good with who you are. ‘Cause our lives – they’re ours.”
He gets to tell his father he “has a family”, not a conventional one - “an angel and Lucifer’s kid”, but it’s good:

http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/182794294534/an-angel-and-lucifers-kid-queer-coding-and
And he gets to choose to let his Dad go, with love. What beautiful psychological progress, huh? AU!Michael is out of his head and so is the controlling Ghost of his Father, replaced by a loving one!
But, it’s not that simple. When the pearl is destroyed, time is reset and AU!Michael is still installed in Dean’s noggin. It’s only when Dean and Cas have been whammied by the Queer Gorgon, that AU!Michael (Dean’s repression, remember) finally gets out of his mind (14x14 Ouroboros):
The Kiss of the Queer Gorgon in 14x14 Ouroboros

Jack (Dean’s child-self mirror) kills AU!Michael (John’s repressive ghost mirror) but, the burden is great and the cost is (at least part of) his soul.
Moreover, when Mary is subsequently “killed” by Jack (you all know by now I have a theory she’s been fake re-fridged, and she’s actually been blasted into an AU, and we’ll see her again), Dean regresses. He goes back into uber-controlling mode, over-responsible mode, as a way of dealing with the fact his world has fallen apart again. Psychically (as many of you clever people have already pointed out) he’s been taken back to the trauma his 4 year old self experienced when Mary died the first time.
So, Dean puts on his control-mask, the one he learned from his Dad, and (just like John did) he focusses on dealing with the yellow-eyed “monster” who killed Mary, to contain the pain. He refuses to listen to Sam or Cas. He tells them to get on board with his (suicidal again) plan or get lost. HE is the one who instigates locking Jack (remember, also a representation of his child-self) in the Ma’lak box:
Tumblr media
And he is the one who won’t listen to his loved ones,  but jumps all over and obeys without question, the Word of God (the Law of the Father) that the only way is to shoot Jack with the new mystical gun (Colt Mark II) when Chuck shows up with it.
Displaced-in-time John said, in 14x13 Lebanon (having been filled in by his sons):
JOHN: “I-I went out takin’ out Yellow Eyes. I mean, that was the point, right? I mean, get the thing that killed mom.”
Chuck offers Dean the same choice (and, again, I think it’s a test).
Remember, as well as being the Revenge GunTM, the Hammurabi is also know as “The Equaliser”, so whatever happens to the person who is shot, also happens to the shooter. A perfect, perfect metaphor for the way in which John’s revenge quest rebounded on his sons (compounding the emotional trauma of losing their Mom).
If Dean’ follows in his father’s footsteps and shoots the yellow-eyed “demon” who killed Mary, his own adopted son Jack (who, did I mention, represents his child-self) he will die - literally, according to the “law” of Chuck’s mystical gun, but also symbolically.
Because symbolically, that choice represents the fact that Dean has been crushing the life out of himself, for a long time, thanks to the internalised Ghost of John Winchester in his head (demanding that he be a substitute-parent to Sammy, that he stay “on mission”, that he perform a certain kind of masculinity, that he is responsible for everything and everyone, that he constantly fails [because he is trying to live up to an impossible standard]).
And at the last, Dean passes the test. He says, “No,” to the ultimate Father FigureTM (God) who is shouting at him to pick up the gun and pull the trigger.
He says “No” even when Chuck promises to bring Mary back from the “dead”.
He does not repeat the cycle of his father’s revenge quest. He lowers the weapon of RevengeTM and of Re-bounding Suffering/ DeathTM.
He (finally) has compassion for Jack and thus (hopefully, hopefully) for his own child-self mirror.
Tumblr media
On symbolic Mount Moriah, Dean confronts his Shadow-self, the part of him that is “just like” his father, the part that keeps controlling or pushing away his key relationships (with Sam and Cas and now Jack) the part that finds safety in orders, and in a black-and-white view of the world where monsters are monsters, and in which revenge is the answer.
Confronting the Shadow, as I wrote before 14x20 aired, can release us from “scapegoating”:
The Scapegoat: Speculative Musings on S14′s End (Moriah) (Linked to the Season’s Jungian Themes - Scapegoating and the Unacknowledged Shadow)
https://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/184068368304/the-scapegoat-speculative-musings-on-s14s-end
So, Dean says, “No” to God, the ultimate father-figure, and in doing so he is released from his Shadow-possession by the father-imago in his unconscious
DEAN: “No, my Mom was my hero, and I miss her, and I will miss her every second of my life, but she would not want this.”
As a counter-point, he embraces the feminine (his internal anima, according to Jung). He evolves.
And so, the mirror is broken through between the self and the Shadow-self, the ego and the id. AU!Michael/  the Ghost of John Winchester/ the Voice of God are out of Dean Winchester’s head. They can no longer control him: he has faced them all.
Tumblr media
Now,  Dean has to learn to be himself, a whole new final chapter in the journey.
“The shadow, when it is realized, is the source of renewal ...  no progress or growth is possible until the shadow is adequately confronted and confronting means more than merely knowing about it. It is not until we have truly been shocked into seeing ourselves as we really are, instead of as we wish or hopefully assume we are, that we can take the first step toward individual reality” (Connie Zweig, Meeting the Shadow, 1990).
And, if you’ve been following the thread in the links to my other meta on Dean’s Shadow here, on how John’s repression in Dean’s mind was depicted (in subtext in S14) as, in part, Dean’s repression of his queerness (the Ma’lak box and the fridge-locker in Rocky’s mind-bar being symbols of the closet) then this culminating confrontation with the repressive image of The FatherTM in the form of God himself, as symbolic of Dean’s own controlling, self-repressing, self-closeting, Shadow-self, does seem to clear the way for... interesting developments (dramatic irony claxon - Dean still doesn’t know God is, in fact, himself bisexual).
However, as always, I caution that the overtly homoerotic denoument is more than likely to remain closeted at the last, in favour of the “familial”.

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh
Big ‘ol personal post
So despite having a loving family, I am still an intensely internal person who tends not to share what’s going on in my day-to-day with them on the regular. I know they care, but as a general rule I just don’t want their fucking input the majority of the time. Maybe this is a youngest thing, that as a kid I was so used to unsolicited advice from my parents/elder siblings that I was in a constant war of attrition to keep them the fuck outta my business, and now these habits have extended into how I express myself as an adult... but let’s save the psychoanalysis for later and get down to brass tacks here.
Living far from home, the occasional status update is warranted. Parents like to know I’m still alive on this gd island, brother likes to know about the beaches and the night life, sister likes to know I’m not isolating myself to death. Mom and I talk... occasionally on Sundays, we’ve set up an FB chat that’s basically a place where we tag each other with funny goat memes, but don’t discuss anything of substance because mom texts like a snail. Brother is more ADHD than I am, so don’t tend to discuss serious things with him unless phone call. Sister is focused, empathetic, but works all the fucking time so we often forget to poke each other. Point is, it’s been 3 months since I gave anyone the lowdown on what the fucking hell is going on out here.
Sister poked me last night, asking how life is going.
I just... casually dumped 4 paragraphs of STUFF into our FB chat
P sure she’s asleep rn
Also I don’t think I realized just how much bullshit has happened in the past 3 months? Like I think I had my armor on because writing it all out and laying it straight, I feel like I’m about to cry. I’ve been questioning why I’ve been so stressed out lately, but then I read this shit back and it’s like HOW AM I NOT HAVING A NERVOUS BREAK DOWN RN????
And it’s extra hilarious because my BODY knew I was stressed tf out. It’s doing all the things it does when I’m just about at breaking point-- I cough like I’ve been smoking for 20 years despite having no phlegm to give up, the muscle in my lower back that likes to spasm goes apeshit and causes the stabby pains, and I break out like a teenager who forgot bathing was a thing. And I just... ignored all that as oh I’ve just been sitting around a lot, my body is yelling at me for not being as physical as I should, only LETHARGY IS ANOTHER SIGN THAT FUCKING DEPRESSION IS TAKING OVER AGAIN AND I SHOULD BE GOING TO WAR AGAINST MY OWN BRAIN’S SELF DESTRUCTIVE HABITS BY NOW. MOBILIZE THE TROOPS, FUCKING GO PEOPLE
Man I would really like to punch the hell outta something. This bitch needs a punching bag. Might tape some pillows to a wall to suffice.
Anyway I’m gonna eat an orange now, peace!
