I would like to say I don’t understand why this shit keeps happening, but I actually do understand it way too well. It just makes me so sad and angry. Especially on a site where people find and make their communities.

So much of this is about ego, and the people with power wielding that power to protect themselves and failing to protect others with it. A mere hint of negative sentiment towards them is harassment that is dealt with immediately and harshly, but a dozen complaints about discrimination or threats or bullying take ages to process and frequently come to unsatisfactory moderation decisions.

Whatever the sentiments of the people running this hellsite, you are always welcome in my corner of the internet, wherever you find it. You are all wonderful, and we all deserve to feel that part of this space belongs to us and those to whom we can connect.

Transphobia has no place on tumblr, period. Or anywhere else in society for that matter. It is that which should be being rooted out.

If you’re having issues with your gender, sexuality, or just identity in general… it’s ok. It’s okay to discover yourself, it’s okay to change, and it’s ok to be comfortable with who you are now. Everyone goes on their own journey at some point, you should embrace yours. If you ever worry it’s “just a phase”, that is okay. You are allowed to try new things and experiment, you are allowed to realize if what you thought about yourself wasn’t true. You are allowed to grow and you’re allowed to change.

I think something I love about Moonlight Chicken is that you get three different generations of LGBTQ characters sharing the same space and you can see, through the subtleties of their interactions and their outlooks, the events and perspectives that have shaped them and how much (and how little) the world has changed.

You have Jim, nearing 40 and clearly shaped by countless people (including his loved ones) not welcoming who he is and who he loves and who believed, to a certain extent, that it was "normal" for people to think that way, who accepts himself but still has difficulty with what it means to be gay in the wider world.

Then you have Wen, 10 years younger and proud and open and comfortable with who he is and his place in the world. He knows all the lingo, he seems like a little bit of an activist (if his taste in decor is to be believed) and he's used to having discussions around sexuality and social norms.

Finally, Li Ming, even younger still and so comfortable in himself that he doesn't particularly feel the need to explore or explain his sexuality and his attraction to Heart, he just embraces it as another part of what makes him him and leaves the nail biting and the questions to other people.

They literally show us the transition from "being LGBTQ is something I must live with" to "being LGBTQ is something I must fight for" to, finally "being LGBTQ is one of the many bits that is me" without ever saying it out loud.

It's genuinely such a beautiful piece of commentary and, in my eyes, it makes the show even more meaningful and beautiful.

I love a good old fashioned predetermined destiny that can not be stopped. Everyone knows that Garmadon is my favorite character by this point and while Lloyd isn't one of my favorite characters (not cause he's a bad character I just like others more) I still really like his story and arc over the course of the story.

I will never not think it's interesting that both Lloyd and Garmadon had fates that they couldn't change or escape. Lloyd was always going to be the green ninja it was destined before he was even a thought, before he was even born, before he could develop a true sense of self a title was thrust upon him and thusly the expectations of everyone around him. Garmadon on the other hand was doomed from the second he was bit by the Great Devourer maybe even before then. He was his father's Oni half and he was very aware of that fact throughout his entire journey in Spinjitzu Brothers we see him slowly begin to think he is destined to ultimately left evil and alone. He tries to be good time and time again only to be possessed, killed and brought back to life without his good half.

Also I think I've FINALLY settled on a Lloyd design, since before now it's been changing every time.

Yes, there are gay characters in Tolkien’s books

There seems to be an entrenched view among Tolkien fans that Tolkien did not write any gay characters, and that by interpreting any of his characters as gay you are going against what he would have wanted. Homophobes obviously believe this very strongly, and have always been hostile towards queer fans and queer interpretations of Tolkien’s works. Many members of the LGBTQ community also believe that they’re contradicting canon when they interpret Tolkien’s characters as gay—the only difference is they don’t mind doing so.

But is it so against canon to interpret any of Tolkien’s characters as gay? The assumption that Tolkien did not write gay characters hinges on his Catholicism, but I’m going to explain why this is flimsy reasoning.

First, it should be noted that Tolkien didn’t leave any writings expressing his views on homosexuality, so there is no evidence one way or another. But it seems relevant that Tolkien was good friends with W.H. Auden and corresponded with him over multiple decades. They first met when Auden listened to one of Tolkien’s lectures at Oxford and was inspired to learn Anglo-Saxon. Auden loved Tolkien’s poetry and prose and defended LOTR from critics at a time when it was seen as an unserious work in an unserious genre. Did Tolkien know Auden was gay? We don’t know for sure. But there’s at least a chance that he did: the secret of Auden’s homosexuality is one he “loosely kept”, according to an article in the Guardian.

So, Tolkien was friends with a gay man whom he may or may not have known was gay. But are there gay characters in Tolkien’s books? Unfortunately for the homophobes, even if you believe that Tolkien opposed homosexuality on principle, that still doesn’t mean no one in Middle-earth is gay. Actually, no one in Middle-earth is Catholic. I mean that literally, in the sense that Catholicism does not exist in the time period Tolkien wrote about, but I also mean it in the sense that Tolkien’s characters need not adhere to the tenets of his religion, even if it’s not named. Why would they?

It shouldn’t be controversial or surprising to point out that writers can, and often do, write characters that live very different lives from their own. Needless to say, Tolkien didn’t condone the actions of the antagonists of his work, but what about the protagonists? Are we to believe that all of them act in an unfailingly Catholic way at all times? In Laws and Customs of the Eldar, it is strongly implied that (especially in their younger years) Elves do have sex for pleasure and not just to beget children, something that is discouraged by Catholicism. That’s just one example.

(Please note that I’m not arguing that Tolkien’s Catholicism had no influence on his writings, because he explicitly said that it did. I’m saying that Tolkien’s characters themselves are not Catholic and do not necessarily behave like Catholics. So even if you think that all Catholics believe homosexuality is wrong, it has no bearing on Tolkien’s stories.)

Another line of reasoning goes that homosexuality is too taboo for Tolkien—but I have to wonder if people who believe this have read his books at all. The Silmarillion is full of taboo subjects. Túrin and Niënor marry, not knowing they are brother and sister; they find out the truth, and that she is pregnant, and they both commit suicide. Eöl’s relationship with Aredhel is one that, even if it didn’t start out as controlling and abusive—although I suspect it did—it clearly ended up that way, and depending on your interpretation of the text, he may have raped her. Celegorm attempts to force Lúthien to marry him, which would also involve rape, and there is a passage that implies that Morgoth also intends to rape Lúthien. Neither incest, rape or abuse are too taboo for Tolkien—neither are suicide, torture or mass murder, as the rest of the Silmarillion shows.

I don’t want anyone to take this in bad faith: I’m not saying that being gay is comparable to incest, rape or abuse, and I’m part of the LGBTQ community myself. What I am saying is that Tolkien clearly did not shy away from certain subjects, including sexual taboos, simply because they’re taboo. If you’re going to argue that none of Tolkien’s characters are queer because it wasn’t accepted at the time, that’s very unconvincing given the other subject matter in his books.

There is another reason why I think there are gay characters in Middle-earth, and it has to do with Tolkien’s inspirations. It’s well understood by Tolkien fans that you can see echoes of other mythologies in Tolkien’s works. But which ones? When Lúthien brings Beren back from the Halls of Mandos, there are obvious parallels with the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice—though the genders are reversed, and Lúthien succeeds where Orpheus did not. There are parallels between Túrin and Kullervo. There are numerous examples of this kind of thing throughout the Silmarillion and LOTR. Even the name Middle-earth clearly has its roots in the Norse name Midgard. There are some influences that Tolkien explicitly acknowledged, like the Kalevala and the Völuspá, and some that Tolkien scholars have only theorized about. While there are some scholarly articles on Tolkien and the Aeneid, one thing I have never seen anyone discuss is the parallel between Beleg’s death and the story of Nisus and Euryalus.

In the Aeneid, Nisus and Euryalus are a pair of friends and lovers who are fighting for Aeneas in Latium. Nisus, the older of the two men, is said to be a skilled javelin-thrower and archer. Nisus proposes a night raid on an enemy camp, and Euryalus insists on going with him. During the raid they kill many men in their sleep, collecting some of their armor as loot, as was customary. But when they leave the camp, the glint of light on a helmet taken by Euryalus is seen by a group of enemy horsemen, who capture and kill him before Nisus can stop them. Nisus is distraught and kills many of them in retaliation, ultimately dying beside his lover’s body. (In some versions, it’s a stolen belt, not a helm—but the constant motif is the glint of light that reveals Euryalus to the enemy.)

There are so many similarities with Beleg and Túrin that it cannot be a coincidence. Beleg and Túrin also fight side by side, first on the marches of Doriath and later when Túrin is an outlaw. They are very loyal to each other, and clearly love each other. Like Nisus, Beleg is known to be a great archer. Meanwhile, although it does not feature in Beleg’s death scene, Túrin is associated with a particularly significant helm. There are differences too: Túrin’s captivity is the reason for Beleg’s raid on the Orc-camp, whereas Euryalus is captured after the raid; both Nisus and Euryalus are slain one after the other, whereas only Beleg dies in the raid on the Orc-camp. But there is still the overarching parallel of the night raid, in which the enemy guards are killed silently in their sleep; the raid’s connection with an attempted rescue; the chance moment that leads to the tragic death; the imagery of the flash of light; and the distraught reaction of Nisus and Túrin when they see that Euryalus and Beleg are dead. Tolkien read the Aeneid as a student and so would have been familiar with its contents.

There is also the fact that in some versions of the story Túrin kisses Beleg on the mouth in this scene. Although kissing someone on the mouth has not always been a romantic gesture in all cultures and time periods, the clear parallels to the scene in the Aeneid lead me to think that it is in this case. Whether you see the relationship between Túrin and Beleg as romantic is up to you—all that I’m trying to do is show that it’s a legitimate interpretation.

Ultimately, like I wrote here, I don’t think you need permission from anyone in order to interpret Tolkien’s stories the way you want to. If you want to interpret one of his characters as gay, you don’t need to cite obscure plotlines from the Aeneid to justify it. But I do take issue with the idea—which is so pervasive in the fandom—that Tolkien’s stories must not have gay, or bisexual, or trans people in them, and that any interpretations to that effect are against canon. At the end of the day, Middle-earth is supposed to be our world, and guess what? Queer people exist.

your sleeping form tossed and turned in bed as you whimpered and sobbed in your sleep; the only soul who knew exactly the horrors you were experiencing was wooyoung's poor thing who was experiencing it. 

wooyoung opened the door, being as quiet as he possibly could as he stepped into the hallway. the toe of his shoe hit the bottom corner of the apartment door as he stepped around it, and he involuntarily inhaled, his spine shaking in a pained cringe. 

wooyoung's hand drifted up to cover his mouth as he let loose a wide yawn. he put his hand on the door knob, but before he could turn it and enter the room, he heard your sleeping cries for wooyoung's. he heard you begging desperately for... someone or something not to hurt you, and the sound of that made his heart fall and shatter. wooyoung hurried into the room, dropping his things on the floor next to the bed as he crawled up over you and lay down at your side.

“hey,” he whispered, scooting closer to you and began to gently run his fingers through your hair, leaving little butterfly kisses on your neck, face and the tip of your nose as he pulled you as close to his chest as he could get you.

“baby, wake up, it’s just a nightmare,” he whispered into your hair, hugging you tight and biting his bottom lip as he tried to hold back from crying himself. 

wooyoung's resolve didn’t last long however, crumbling to pieces when you sobbed into his chest and began to scream. he squeezed his eyes shut and bit down harder on his lip as he felt the first tears roll down the side of his face and across the bridge of his nose. 

“m-m/n, wake up, please...” he whimpered, unconsciously pulling you closer to him as he hid his face in your hair. “m/n, it’s j-just a nightmare, baby, wake up, please...”

You continued to sob and plead into wooyoung's chest, and for the longest time he just cried with you. But when he heard one particular word slip from your lips, he finally understood the horrors you were experiencing.

you were afraid of spiders. that was what was plaguing your minimal hours of rest --- you had texted him about four hours ago that you were going to bed after a two-day all-nighter working on an essay for one of the core classes you were taking for your psychology major. 

wooyoung let out a shaky breath he hadn’t known he was holding, squeezing you even tighter if possible as hot, salty tears continued to spill down the side of his face and into your hair. his hand strayed up to the back of your head, and he gently pressed you impossibly closer. 

soon enough, your sleeping sobs and pleads faded away, melting into the silence. wooyoung's tears soon stopped coming as well and, not knowing what to do or say, he simply continued to cuddle you, hugging you as tight as he could, fearing that you would just melt away.

the two of you just laid there that way for a while, not exchanging words for what could have been hours before he felt an arm slowly worm under his side as you exhaustedly wrapped your arms around him. a smile forced its way through wooyoung's cracked and crumbling defenses, and he took a soft hold of your chin between his thumb and pointer finger as he leaned in and let his lips touch yours. 

“are you alright, my darling?” he asked, unable to get out anything more than a whisper as he tried desperately to control his heart and beat back the tears.

“n-no, not r-really...” you whimpered, nuzzling into the center of his chest as you tried your best not to start crying again.

wooyoung really didn’t wanna say it, but it was clear at this point that it needed to be said. he knew you needed to hear it, so with difficulty and a deep breath, he forced himself to say,

“You gotta stop doing this, m/n.”

“doing what...?” you asked, unhiding yourself and looking up at him through your still-wet lashes.

“skipping the second half of your blasted written communications class and staying up all night doing work that you should have had done in class.”

“but --- don’t wannaaa...” you whined.

“i don't give a flying fuck m/n, it’s bad for you!” pouted wooyoung, giving you his signature angy puppy eyes. you being in the soft, emotionally fragile state you were in, easily caved. 

“fine.” you sighed dramatically, giving him a cute, weak pout. “i promise i’ll stay the whole class.”

“aaand?” 

“HUUUUUUUGHH, FIIIIINE,” you groaned, letting go of wooyoung and flopping onto your back under the thick blankets that adorned the bed. “and i promise i won't pull allnighters anymore, and i'll do all my work in class."

wooyoung let himself smile, finally at ease. 

“good...” he murmured, pressing another kiss onto your lips before pulling you back into his arms.

“i love you, woo boo.” 

“i love you too, my prince.”

“can I have some chocolate?” you asked, giving wooyoung your own puppy eyes. 

“no, absolutely not!” he giggled, “you cannot get into my chocolate stash right after a nightmare!” 

you huffed and pouted, your eyebrows wrinkling in mock anger. 

“hmph.” you puffed, putting your face back into his chest.
