Still In the Frame

Pairing: Hockey Player!Bucky x Sports Photographer!Reader
Warning: a pinch of fluff, pinch of angst, a hefty dose of Bucky Barnes.
Author's Note: It's been such a long time since I've written and I fear i may be in over my head here. But alas I will not back down I am getting this story out! i hope you all enjoy this first part, back to my dark cave i goooo!
The doors to TD Garden had opened nearly two hours ago, but you had been here long before that mentally preparing yourself for the adrenaline the night would bring.
Hoisting your gear bag over your shoulder you move through the arena, tapping your badge against the security scanner, weaving your way through the tunnels that once upon a time had felt too big, too loud, too unreal for a dreamer like yourself. But you had fought to build your name in this industry, long nights of hard work finally earning you a place with the Boston Bruins as their official sports photographer.
A second home.
Dropping your bag behind the rink side media table you unzipped it with practiced ease, laying out your lenses, checking your batteries, running through the quiet rhythm of getting ready.
Your own pre-game ritual.
“Hey y/n, I know this is your thing by now but you know you get here early right, you could at least wait until the players are out on the ice warming it up before you show up.” Mark one of the newer videographers was tangled in a cable of wires behind the media table a crooked grin on his lips as he paused his work to watch you set up. “Are you really that afraid you’ll miss the puck drop if you don’t check every setting seven times? It’s you, you never miss”
You shake your head, smile pulling at your lips as you adjust the strap of your camera around your neck. “While you’re right that I never miss, I also can’t help that I’m thorough Mark, I am a professional. Unlike some people.” you tease.
He mock-gasps, eyes rolling, Mark was as professional as they came when it came to the wiring of the media board, but if he was going to dish it, he could certainly take it. “Rude,” he huffs, “you just happened to catch me at a bad moment.”
You didn’t answer, instead lifting your camera and aiming it right at him. Click. He groaned head thrown back. “Now I caught you,” you grin flashing him the display.
“Oh God y/n delete that, save that film for the players,” he murmurs ducking out of frame to tend to his tangled wires before you can get another shot of him.
Chuckling to yourself you turn to the ice surveying what will be the background of many of your shots tonight. The arena is glimmering in the warmth of a dozen overhead lights, a Zamboni humming in the distance, stands beginning to fill with anxious fans. While you loved the game, this was the part you loved the most, the calm before the chaos, the quiet just before the thunder of the crowd.
The calm however was short lived as players began to file onto the ice, like the fans filled the stands.
Warmup.
Warmups passed as they always do; in a blur of skates and sticks, high-speed passes, and the clang of a puck against the post. And you captured it all without a second thought tracking the motion through your viewfinder, framing the pre-game like a dance you knew by heart, and you knew it well. But it was when the players cleared the ice, the lights falling dim for the player introductions that something in the atmosphere began to shift as it always did.
The announcer’s voice was loud, matching the energy of the arena as his voice boomed over the speakers, the crowd swelling with anticipation as the players' names echoed off the crowded walls.
“Number 88, Steve Rogers!”
“Number 63, Sam Wilson!”
“And now, making his official debut with the Boston Bruins -”
Your camera slipped from your fingers, breath catching in your throat as you took in the image that flashed on the screen above the ice. It couldn't be.
“Number 14 - Bucky Barnes!”
Time didn’t just slow - it shattered.
Your ears rang, your heart skipping a beat in your chest. The roar of the crowd turning hollow, as if your head had been dunked in a tank of ice water, his name spinning in your head, once, twice, like a puck skimming ice - then sinking deep and fast.
Bucky.
You hadn’t heard his name aloud in over four years. Not in person. Not like this.
Your stomach dropped as you gripped the camera like it might anchor you, like the weight of it could hold you still while your world suddenly tipped.
Four years had apparently not been long enough to convince yourself it hadn’t meant a thing.
And then he was there; in person stepping onto the ice like he owned it, his stride smooth and familiar. Your brain refused to catch up. It can't be.
And just then, like something cosmic twisted the moment tighter, his eyes found yours.
Bucky Barnes, four years gone, looked across the rink and found you like he’d known exactly where you’d be.
The world vanished in a moment.
Only the ice that separated the two of you remained.
You should’ve looked away then. Should’ve focused on your job, the game, literally anything else. But you didn’t. Couldn’t. Bucky’s gaze was locked on yours, steady and unflinching, and for the first time in years you forgot how to breathe. The arena came to life around you; players skating, music pounding, lights flashing, but in that single breath of time, none of it mattered. It was just him, you, and the ghost of a promise that still echoed louder than the roar of the crowd.
Don’t forget me when it happens.
I couldn’t if I tried.
You took this time to study him, he looked different now than he did all those years ago. He was sharper around the edges, jaw more defined, shoulders bulked from years in the league. But his eyes, his eyes were the same; ice blue and intense, soft around the corners like he still carried pieces of a boy who used to skate backwards just to make you laugh.
Click.
Turning as quickly as you had snapped the photo, you let the camera drop to your chest pretending to mess with your gear, pretending you weren’t on the verge of losing yourself over him again. Your pulse pounded through your fingertips as you toggled with your camera, you could feel it in your throat, your ribs, it was disarming. You exhaled heavily pressing your palm flat against your chest like that would calm it. It didn’t.
“Y/n,” Mark called over the boards concern in his voice. “You good?”
You forced a tight smile nodding your head. “Yeah, yeah I’m fine.”
“You sure? You look -”
“I said I’m fine Mark.”
He held up his hands in surrender as he ducked away, though you could sense his lingering curiosity, he had never seen you waver, not like this. Not wanting to give him more to worry about you turned your back to him, to the ice and took a few grounding breaths.
Bucky Barnes.
Here.
You hadn't seen his name in the pre-game media emails. Hadn’t caught a single whisper about a last-minute roster change. How could you have missed this? Digging your phone out of your coat pocket you unlocked the device to do a quick scan through the league’s news alerts and sure enough, there it was:
TRADE CONFIRMED: Star winger Bucky Barnes heads to Boston in surprise move just days before season opener.
How had you missed this?
The article was dated two days ago. Two days, and no one had uttered a single word. Had the team kept it quiet on purpose? Or had you just been so deep in prep mode that you missed it? You swallowed hard, fingers hovering over the article, but you didn’t tap it open. You didn’t need to read it. You already knew the stats. You knew how good he was. You knew the numbers, the accolades, the goals. The reason behind why he was here, why he had been traded.
What you didn’t know - what you hadn’t dared to think about - was why he hadn' tried harder. Why didn't he try harder to reach you. You’d given him space when he made it, telling yourself he needed time to adjust to the big leagues that you didn’t want to be the one to distract him. That when the time was right for him, and he found himself that he would find you.
But he never did.
And now he’s here.
You curl and uncurl your fingers shaking the digits out as you will yourself not to fall apart. This wasn’t high school. This wasn’t the night you stood outside the rink and watched him drive away with everything he’d ever wanted.
This was your dream, the one you had chased without him in it.
And you weren’t going to let a single look crack you open.
Even if it already had.
The buzzer pierced the air tearing you from your reverie, the first period beginning in a flash of movement. Stepping into your role like a second skin you moved with it, slipping down the edge of the boards, crouching into position, camera poised and ready.
It was easier once the puck dropped. The motion, the rhythm, the muscle memory, you let it carry you as you focused on the angles, light, shutter speeds. You caught clean shots of face-offs, passes, hard checks against the glass. And through it all, Bucky moved like a storm just waiting to break. Controlled. Calculated. Focused in a way that pulled your gaze again and again, even when you didn’t mean to follow him.
Halfway through the period, he stole the puck mid-zone, spun off a defender, and passed it clean to his line mate. The crowd roared. The shot missed, but it didn’t matter. The energy shifted. He was electric.
And then, he caught your eye again.
Just a flick of his eyes, right before the play reset. Almost like he wanted to be sure you were still there. Watching.
Your fingers curled around your camera, you didn’t know what that look meant.
But you felt it down to your bones.
And by the end of the first period, your entire body was buzzing with something other than adrenaline.
In the nearly short time, you’d manage to capture nearly three hundred frames already, clean, crisp shots of first-game adrenaline, a few hard hits, and a couple of near-misses that would look perfect on the team’s social media page. You worked through the intermission, head down as you sorted through previews, selecting the best for upload. Your fingers moving, dragging files to folders, checking lighting, adjusting contrast—but none of it felt real. None of it felt normal to you. And you knew why.
No matter how busy you tried to keep yourself you could feel his eyes on you.
And he looked at you like he knew. As if no time had passed at all.
But time had passed. Four years of it. Four years of silence. Four years of building a life without him. And still, despite the time that passed, you remembered everything about him.
The curve of his mouth when he smiled. The sound of his laugh when you tried to take his picture mid-fall. The way he laced his fingers through yours when the two of you skated alone that night, his cheeks flushed from cold and something sweeter.
“Just… don’t forget me when you do.”
“I promise, no matter how loud it gets out there you’re the only part I’ll never forget.”
Your throat tightend as you shoved the memory down like it burned.
“Yo Y/n, you catch that last play?” Benji from the team’s social video crew dropped onto the folding chair beside you, holding a hot dog in one hand and a clipboard in the other.
“Of course I did Benj,” you said, without looking up from your work “Great puck control. Good chemistry it was a good play.”
“He’s something, huh?” Benji mumbled around a bite his head tilted towards the ice. “Barnes, I mean. Hell of a pickup.” he said around a mouthful.
You didn’t answer.
“He’s gonna be a fan favorite. Like, immediately. We’ve already got two new merch drops planned with his name.”
“That so?” you questioned voice flat, neutral.
“Yeah. Honestly surprised you didn’t know he got traded.” Benji nudged your arm. “You’re usually on top of this stuff.”
“Yeah, well I’ve been busy,” is all you can muster.
Benji snorts drawing your gaze to him, “well, prepare to be busy with him. Word is the front office wants a full feature – I’m talking photos, interviews, maybe a docuseries down the line. That guy’s a gold mine.”
You looked down at your camera. The screen still displaying the last photo you’d taken—Bucky mid-turn, looking over his shoulder, eyes aimed squarely at you. You clicked the shutter closed and tucked it into your lap.
“Hey,” Benji said, noticing your shift. “You, okay?”
“M’fine Benj.”
“You sure, you don't like fine.” he tried
“I said I’m fine.” you repeated as you got to your feet slinging your gear over your shoulder.
“Alright. Sorry.” He held up both hands, backing off. “Didn’t mean to upset you.”
You sighed not answering as you moved to walk down the tunnel toward the photo bay, ignoring the nerves spiking beneath your ribs. Your boots echoed along the concrete, each step louder than the last.
You needed air. Or silence. Or both.
Instead, you slipped into the Bruins’ media room and sank into your work. It was your safest space; rows of monitors, quiet keystrokes, and the hum of image processors. You worked in silence as you transferred the files to your editing station and let yourself go still for the first time all night.
And then - you hesitated.
There it was again.
That photo.
Bucky’s face on the screen, sharp and real and heartbreakingly familiar. His expression unreadable, but his eyes.
His eyes saw you.
You reached out touching the edge of the screen like it might offer clarity, like it might tell you something you didn’t already know.
“Why now?” you whisper.
You didn’t expect an answer. The screen stayed silent. The room stayed still.
And in the quiet, something old and aching surfaced, something you’d buried for your own good.
You had loved him.
That wasn’t the hard part.
The hard part was knowing you might still.
The Bruins won their season opener in overtime.
The locker room was chaos; shouts and laughter, music blaring, the thud of backs being slapped, skates being kicked off and gloves tossed aside. You stayed in the shadows like you always did, ducking through the edges of celebration to capture the aftermath. The triumph. The sweat. The fire burning in their eyes.
Your lens stayed steady.
Your pulse did not.
You caught a shot of the team crowded around Bucky, slamming hands into his shoulders, shouting praise and calling him a beast. He smiled; wide and unguarded. For a second, it looked like he belonged here.
And maybe he did.
But he used to belong to you.
You take the photo and back away before he could see you. He hadn’t looked in your direction since the third period. Maybe you could still fade out of this night without being -
“Hey hotshot.”
His voice stopped you cold.
You turned slowly, heart thudding.
Bucky stood their in the hallway just outside of the media room, dressed in Bruin's warmups and damp from the post-game shower. A towel slung around his neck. His hair was a little longer than you remembered, curling slightly at the ends. His face held the same structure, only harder. More carved. But his eyes?
Same.
Too much.
Blue and full of something unspoken.
For a second, neither of you say anything. The world narrowed to the space between the two of you - four years wide, but shrinking fast.
“Hi Bucky,” you say, voice coming out quieter then you meant.
“Y/n,” he breathes, like it's the first time he’d been allowed to say your name again.
Your breath hitches.
You hated how easily he made you feel sixteen again. Awkward and hopeful and afraid of your own heart. But you weren’t that girl anymore. You had lines now. Boundaries. You had built yourself back from the pieces he left behind.
You didn’t smile, didn’t move.
“I didn’t know you were with the team,” he said after a pause, voice gentle, like anything louder might make you run. “I mean, I should’ve figured. Your work’s all over the site. You’ve gotten really good.”
You blinked. “You didn’t recognize my name?”
“I did,” he said. “But I didn’t believe it. Thought it might’ve been someone else.”
His words hang between you. It hurt. It wasn’t fair, but it did.
“Well,” you said, stepping back. “Now you know.”
“Y/n - ”
“Congratulations on the win Bucky.” You turned to go, but his voice stops you.
“Wait. Please.” You freeze.
“I didn’t forget you,” he whispers, and the words knock the breath right out of your chest.
Slowly, you will yourself to face him again.
His face is earnest. Raw. “That night - before I left, I meant what I said. About not forgetting. I tried to call you. A few times actually. But you never picked up. And then the season started, and things got crazy and I thought, I thought maybe you moved on.”
You felt the sting behind your eyes, but you blinked it back. “Forgot? I waited, Bucky. I waited for months and all I got was radio silence.”
“I know,” he said softly. “ I'm sorry, I should’ve tried harder.”
A beat of silence.
He looked like he wanted to close the space between the two of you but didn’t. “Can we talk? Not here. Just - sometime. Catch up.”
Your hands found your camera, gripping it like it might save you. “I - I don’t know.”
“You don’t have to say yes right now.” he rushes.
You shake your head, sad smile pulling at your lips, “I don’t know if I ever can.”
Your words silence him.
The hallway feels smaller.
He looks at you like he understands, like he knew what he’s broken.
And maybe he did.
Not waiting for his reply you turn on your feet to go, and this time, he doesn't stop you.
By the time you've made it home, your feet are sore, your back aches, and your head is too loud with everything you hadn’t said. You dropped your gear by the door and kicked off your boots as you padded through to your kitchen. Tea. You needed tea. Something warm to wrap your hands around while you pieced yourself back together.
Again.
The kettle hissed to life as it heated the water, doing little to block Bucky’s voice still echoing in your ears.
“I didn’t forget you.”
Too late.
You poured the water, letting the tea steep as you took it to the worn armchair in your living room. The walls were lined with framed shots from your last few seasons—mid-air slapshots, slow-motion goal celebrations, players locked in motion like dancers with blades.
But none of those photos rattled you.
Only one had.
You set the mug down as you grab your laptop, plugging in your memory card. The folders from tonight were still there, untouched since the arena. You opened the preview set and flipped through until you found it.
The shot.
Bucky turning mid-play, the crowd blurred behind him, eyes locked on the camera.
On you.
You stared at the image, heart clenched too tight to ignore. It was a perfect photo, technically flawless. But it wasn’t that that stopped your breath.
It was the expression on his face.
Not fierce, like during the rush. Not celebratory. Not focused.
Just open.
Like he was still trying to say something you hadn’t let him finish.
Your fingers hovered over the trackpad; you could delete it. Bury it in your archives. Pretend it didn’t feel like a bruise you hadn’t expected. Instead, you copy it into a private folder. One you hadn’t touched in a long time.
You name the file firstlook.jpg.
Then you shut the laptop pushing the device away from you.
Outside, the city is quiet. The streetlights bleeding soft gold into your apartment, catching on the glass frame above your mantle. One of the only personal photos you kept on display.
A boy and a girl on a frozen lake, four years ago. He's skating backward, holding her hand. She's laughing, scarf trailing behind her like a ribbon of light. The picture wasn’t perfect. The angle was off, the focus a little soft.
But the look on her face?
It said everything.
You took a long sip of tea, eyes on the past, and let the silence settle around you like snow.
Maybe Bucky Barnes was back in your life.
But that didn’t mean you had to let him stay.
Still.
That look.
That stupid, aching look.
It lingered.

I finally published the project for my dice roll scarf that went viral last month. If you love dice games, you'll enjoy knitting this pattern.

The color work in this project is determined by an algorithm, a set of rules that determine the final outcome. There isn't an exact set of instructions for this project. Instead, the knitter uses four 10-sided dice or a random number generator to pick the length of the colorwork in each row.

The result is a staggered stripe sequence along the edge of the shawl. There are trillions of unique outcomes, so no two projects turn out exactly alike. The pattern uses about 500 yards of yarn in total, but the amount of each color that you'll need is randomly determined. Before publishing, I wanted to find out the minimum and maximum amount of each color required to make the project and the probability of each outcome.

The knowledge needed to calculate the yardage was a bit beyond my skill level, but my friend Mary W. Martin helped me gather this info. I used an online probability calculator to find out the probability of each unique stitch count. The results are slightly different depending on whether you use four 10-sided dice (blue) or pick a random number (yellow), but 99% of all possible results fall within a very small range.

It was an interesting little tangent, but not hugely important to the actual knitting pattern. I can, however, confidently say there is a >99.9% chance that you'll need a 2nd skein of the main color. If you want to know more about the math, you should check out my project notes on Ravelry.
The thick and thin striped colorwork is created with a super simple "long stitch" technique. The pattern looks great in fluffy mohair or contrasting colors of basic wool and the instructions include some basic tips for substituting yarns or changing the gauge.

Finished Size: 18 x 68” (46 x 172 cm) rectangular wrap.
Yarn: Approx. 315 yards (288 m) of MC and approx. 264 yards (241 m) of CC. Yardage may vary, see notes on yardage below and yardage chart in photos.
• Main Color (2 skeins) - JMR Studio Worsted Weight Mohair, 245 yards (225 m) per 4 oz; 78% Mohair, 13% Wool, 9% Nylon.
• Contrast Color (1 skein each, both yarns held together) - JMR Studio Fingering Weight Mohair, 320 yards (293 m) per 100g; 63% Silk, 23% Kid Mohair, 11% Nylon, 3% Polyester Held with Lavender Lune Yarn Co. Suri Alpaca, 328 yards (300 m) per 50g; 74% Suri Alpaca, 26% Silk.
Yardage: The amount of each color used for this pattern fluctuates based on the random numbers used to determine the stitch pattern. MC uses approx. 233 to 315 yards (213 to 288m) and CC uses approx. 182 to 264 yards (166 to 241m). 99% of possible results fall within a much smaller range. The Yardage Chart shows the distribution of all potential yardage outcomes.
Needles: Size 8 (5 mm) straight needles, or size needed to obtain gauge. NOTE: Straight needles work best with long stitches. Circular needles with a thin cord allow the long stitches to tighten and stretch, making them harder to manipulate.
Gauge: 12 sts x 14 rows = 4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm) square in pattern.
Other Materials: 10 sided die or random number generator, stitch marker, scale, tapestry needle.
Generating numbers: In my sample, I used four ten-sided dice (D10) to choose a number between 4 and 40 sts. If you don't have dice, you can use an online app like RANDOM.org to generate your numbers. If you follow this link, you'll get a list of 63 integers between 4 and 40. NOTE: Each time you visit the link or refresh the page, the list changes. You can also just choose numbers as you knit.
Pattern is available on my website and on Ravelry.

Dina Contractions Tracker: The Contracker
It's a list, of Dina, using contractions.
Cause idk, I was bored, it was something to do.
I actually made a list of her contractions back in 2015. And I said I wouldn't make another one cause she had 60 appearances back in 2015 instead of 600.
I lied.
Updated to: March 9th 2025
Book 1:
1: It's fine. 2: Th--There's a fight or something going on outside. 3: Pardon, but these notes aren't m--
Book 2:
4: Amber, oh my god, you didn't come home last night. 5: I'm not? 6: I'm going to go get some lunch. 7-10: I don't know much about people. ::: I've never been able to understand people. ::: They're fixed in time, letting me learn about them without them changing constantly before my eyes. ::: Good, so I'm not missing anything. 11-13: I hadn't ever really considered how others perceive me before. ::: But that's what's moving. 14: I didn't want to be rude. 15-17: If there's cereal, and cereal is best, why wouldn't I always choose it? ::: So I'm performing a small, harmless act that comforts me, and this makes me the strange one. 18: If it's about your large posterior, I have read that some men are predisposed towards such.
Book 3:
19: There's enough evidence for dinosaurs being related somehow to birds that it is considered scientific fact. 20: What's going on? 21: Yay, we're bonding! 22: I do, but I just thought you didn't believe in evolution. 23-25: They're subject to the same natural processes though. ::: I don't think you know how evolution works. ::: I don't think your textbooks knew how evolution works either.
Book 4:
26: I didn't appreciate the severity of his...assholeitude. 27: Amber's upset because her father was here yesterday and she punched him. 28: Oh, good, they've stopped yelling. 29: Is that why nobody points out that you're you when you wear that cape and run around campus? 30: I'm sorry. 31: We're having a sausage festival.
Book 5:
32: I think I'm finally tired of eating just cereal for every meal. 33: It's hypothesized that some dinosaurs found the extravagant spikes and plumage of the opposite sex particularly arousing. 34: I've yet to experience these inclinations myself, though they do fascinate me in a clinical sense. 35: That was... that's for emphasis. 36: Should I have said, "She wasn't kind to me"? 37-38: They're touching each other on the arm. ::: Maybe it's second. 39: Now that the weekend's over, does that mean she goes back home tonight? 40: You're blocking the only sausage pizza. 41: I think the only way to get "Butthole Dad" to go away is for Joyce to convince him that you aren't here. 42-47: I didn't overhear much. ::: When I said you were my favorite, I'm sorry, but that wasn't true. ::: In short, I won't attempt to court you, and I hope you're okay with being only my second favorite. ::: You mean "You're weird." 48-49: If anyone sees those, the dorm will realize what's up. ::: Sarah, you're the most evil of us.
Book 6:
50: Patreon exclusive! 51: That's a boring answer. 52: You said the smiles weren't coming back.
Book 7:
53: Colloquially this could be considered a "bug" but properly it's an arachnid. 54: Because I find eye contact painfully awkward, it's easy to notice when your eyes do not meet mine in return. 55: Becky, you should have just asked me plainly if that's what you wanted.
Book 8:
56: She's not given up on you. 57: Patreon exclusive!
Book 9:
58: Oh, it's you.
Book 10:
59: I'd slash at you here, or here.
Book 11:
60: This is Cap'n Crunch and Reese's Puffs. (Yes I'm counting "Cap'n" as a contraction, sue me!) 61-63: Becky believes in a more benevolent version of her god who's not specifically bigoted in that way. ::: Yes, it's the most I've ever had in common with a fictional character. 64: Patreon exclusive!
Book 12:
65: For example, I'd try to discover what triggered this rise in body temperature. 66: You said sometimes you say you don't want to talk about things when you actually do want to talk about things. 67-68: We don't have to do this. ::: If we're going to test me for sexual attraction properly... we need to establish a baseline for what sexual attraction is. 69: Didn't you want me to want to see you naked? 70: ...I'll put this down as a maybe. 71: But if you didn't...
Book 13:
72: You're troubled.
Book 14:
73-76: My nose 's stuffy. An' there's too many people in my room. M'hiding.
Book 15:
77: ...How'd we end up in this bank vault? 78: ...Don't make subtext text. 79: I am proving, with a wardrobe alteration, that we shouldn't fear a hypothetical shift in sexual preference.

Dungeon Meshi Adventurer's Bible Monsters Part 5
Extra info and timeline
We get some sketches of kelpies, krakens, and minotaurs that are made by "someone who appears to be an illustrious researcher." I think it would be Senshi.
Kelpies walk along the lake bottom like a hippo.
Is the thoroughbred a hypothetical, are there places where people breed racing kelpies, or is this comparing a kelpie to a thoroughbred horse?
This is a nice sketch of the kraken. And then there's that little doodle of the fishman in the corner.
I think the person drawing this was trying to make a proper scale on the side and then gave up on tic marks when they realized how many tics they'd have to draw.
Wait. Do minotaur udders move when they stand or sit, or are there just variations of where the udders grow?
This section is exciting! A timeline of events. I'd been trying to track the passage of time and I estimated the story was maybe three or four months long. It was actually 6 weeks.
Imagine it. Laios is an adventurer who can barely make ends meet, and his most recent expedition ends with his sister getting eaten, all his supplies being lost, and several of his party members quitting. He's so broke, he doesn't have the means to properly supply a rescue operation and he resorts to hunting and eating monsters instead (ignore that he wanted to do that anyway. He was only able to suggest the idea because the group was desperate.) And then six weeks later, he's the king of an ancient kingdom.
The first edition starts at 3/15 and ends on 4/12 when the party faces Thistle. The Complete edition expands the timeline to 4/27. I don't have a translation of the additional pages so it will be a best guess, but here's a rough outline of what chapters happened on what days.
3/16 - chapters 1 and 2
3/17 - chapters 3 and 4
3/18 - chapters 5(?), 6, and 7
3/19 - chapters 8 ad 9
3/20 - chapters 10 - 13
3/21 - chapters 14 - 16, 31, and 32
3/22 - chapters 17 - 20 and 22
3/23 - chapter 21
3/24 - chapters 23 - 28
3/25 - chapters 29 and 30
3/28 - chapter 33
3/29 - chapter 34
4/2 - chapter 34
4/3 - chapters 35 - 38, 45, 53-55
4/4 - chapters 39 - 41 and 61
4/5 - chapters 42, 43, and 62
4/6 - chapters 44 - 46 and 62
4/7 - chapters 47 - 49 and 62
4/8 - chapters 50 - 52 and 62
4/9 - chapter 55
4/10 - chapters 56 - 60
4/11 - chapters 63 - 65
4/12 - chapters 66 - 72
4/13 - chapter 73-80(?)
4/14 - chapter 81
4/15 - chapters 82 - 93
4/17 - chapters 94 - 96
4/24 - chapter 97
4/27 - chapter 97
Nothing in the timeline mentions the kakiage they had in chapter 5 so chapter 5 could potentially happen on 3/17 or 3/18. Marcille became dungeon lord on 4/13 and they ate the "local cuisine" on 4/14 so a day passed at some point. Either it took the party a day to escape the coatl's digestive tract, they rested for the evening before Marcille and the lion told them about her plan, or she locked them in the kitchen for a whole night.
During the story, there were 4 birthdays: Benichidori on 3/15, Hien on 4/1, Marcille on 4/19, and Izutsumi on 4/21.
The biggest surprise I had over the timeline was that Kabru's party was wiped out and revived by Tansu on the same day. In chapter 19, Tansu mentions encountering corpses before meeting Laios and it turns out he was talking about Kabru.
This also means they barely missed Shuro's party. They'd beaten the kraken, crossed the water, and settled in for the day. Then Shuro's team passed by, saved Kabru's party from a sea serpent, and continued on their own way. Laios was taking a secret path given to him by the orcs so his party likely went a completely different direction than Shuro and Kabru's party went.
Here's what I think happened: As we can see in chapter 76, the fourth floor had an upper and lower level to it.
Chapter 15 definitely took place in the upper level since we see the central tower at one point. The party was probably resting on the upper platform.
Chapter 16 however took place in the lower sector with the main indicator being this shot of a high wall in the background.
We can also say for sure that they were on the lower level the next day because the Tansu party was climbing down a spiral staircase when they met Laios's party.
So the sequence of events is something like
Laios's party reaches the fourth floor and encounter and kill Anne the Kelpie.
They take a break above the entrance and then Kabru's party arrives and gets wiped. Then Laios and Chilchuck find them.
Laios's party heads to the lower levels. At around the same time Tansu's party reaches the fourth floor and resurrects Kabru's party. Kabru's party are ambushed by the corpse retrievers and Kabru kills them.
Laios's party encounters the kraken. Kabru's party encounters the sea serpent. Shuro's party reaches the fourth floor and saves Kabru's party. Laios gets infected with a parasite.

YESSSS AAAAAAAAAA so many times i love all of my mutuals they’re all of my favorite writers (especially you hehehe) and it’s always an honor to see them like it or to get a comment or reblog 🤭🤭 it’s why i keep writing hehe i couldn’t do it without you guys
63. something you hate to see in smut
ok here we go… mainly what i HATE to see is ageplay/anything adjacent to that like huge age gaps and concerning plots and dialogue (sevika calling reader “little girl”, reader being young and mega innocent, not even knowing what sex is or how it works) ITS JUST SO GROSS TO ME 😭 also because don’t you want to be a 40 year old butch with her??? this is make believe and you’re choosing to be freshly 18 and innocent instead of 50 and slutty???? get out!!!!
i’d say it’s more of a writing thing than a kink thing??? i love all kinks i think they all deserve to be written about and i love even being introduced to things that i don’t know about, but WHY are we not doing that as adults?????? thats all hehehe
#I LOVE YOU MORE THAN EVERYTHING HEHEHE#MWAH MWAH MWAH MWAH 💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋🤎🤎💋💋💋💋💋🤎🤎🤎🤎💋🤎💋🤎💋🤎💋🤎💋🤎💋🤎🤎#ˏˋ⁀➷ enna’s mail!! ᯓᡣ𐭩#rigelbear!! ♡ ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ

Trinkets Chart for Darkon
I enjoy making trinket charts for DnD. I made this d100 one for my DnD game that's set entirely in Darkon, which I've called The Iron Crown. There's a lot of easter eggs in here, but thought this could be a fun thing to share on a Friday morning while I ignore my actual job.
01-02
A star chart contained within the face of an ornate compass. A question mark is placed where the moon should be.
03-04
A frail bit of parchment containing a half-created new and highly complex summoning spell.
05-06
A flute carved from the charred remains of a human tibia.
07-08
A cane topped with a silver owl that is cold to the touch.
09-10
A silver charm bracelet that contains the following charms: an ornate eye surrounded by flames, a crown set with a single amber gemstone, a skull with small garnets in its eye sockets, and a closed book.
11-12
A vial of cloudy red blood labeled “LvZ”.
13-14
A wooden box engraved with the letter “S” containing a shimmering black, outlandish traveling cloak; brimmed hat, great cloak, and silvery skull-like mask.
15-16
An ebony brooch in the shape of a dragon that does not reflect light.
17-18
A hand mirror that sometimes reflects the translucent image of a young man instead of your own image.
19-20
A mummified hand holding a black candle that cannot be lit.
21-22
A cloak that leaves tendrils of mists in your wake.
23-24
A ring in the shape of a human skull. The skull opens to reveal a coil of coppery reddish hair.
25-26
A set of dice that always roll snake eyes.
27-28
A leather hand cuff engraved with the symbols associated with each school of magic. When someone wearing it casts a spell, the associated symbol glows.
29-30
A ticket for free admission to The Carnival
31-32
A blanket in which silently screaming faces appear under the light of the moon.
33-34
A belt that changes color and size to match any outfit.
35-36
A finger puppet of a piebald raven.
37-38
A scabbard that always keeps the blade within sharp and clean.
39-40
A plush of a skeleton wearing a crown with the label “Is No Fun, is No Blinsky!” on it.
41-42
An hour glass containing black sand that quickens the closer one is to their own death.
43-44
A green gemstone containing the spirit of an unknown entity.
45-46
Incomplete sheet music for the song ‘The King of the Dead’ written by Andres Duvall
47-48
A tarnished wedding band with the words “Life Eternal” carved on the inner band.
49-50
Long, thin, curved blade with a handle carved from a stag’s antler that inspires its owner to take up the craft of wood carving.
51-52
A silver pendant of a raven that you are loathed to part with.
53-54
An invitation to Neverwere Manor signed by Baron Eversong.
55-56
A porcelain doll with eyes that seem to follow you wherever you turn.
57-58
A bell carved from bone that makes a sound only spirits of unrest can hear.
59-60
A monocle that, when viewed through, shows every humanoid in the form of a hybrid lycanthrope.
61-62
A burial shroud that never frays.
63-64
A tea kettle that singles a funeral dirge when the water within boils.
65-66
A blood red candle that produces a black flame.
67-68
Eye glasses that, when worn, change one’s eye color to red.
69-70
A rose made of obsidian that cannot break.
71-72
A music box that, when open, plays an eerie melody as a miniature ballerina wearing a blood-stained tutu dances.
73-74
An amulet that absorbs blood.
75-76
The fingerbone of an unconsecrated skeleton.
77-78
Strange smelling perfume from Borca contained in a glass bottle in the shape of an apple.

A lantern containing floating dim, phosphorescent lights that constantly change from green to blue to purple.
81-82
A book entitled “An Herbalists Guide to the Shadow Rift” that contains alien-like drawings of bizarre plants and plant monsters.
83-84
A pair of cufflinks shaped like skulls that glow purple during a thunderstorm.
85-86
A magnifying glass that shows the user ghostly footprints on any surface they examine.
87-88
A miniature stone dragon egg engulfed in shadowy tendrils.
89-90
A quill pen that contains red ink that refills whenever someone writes with it.
91-92
A cloak clasp in the shape of a moon that changes to match the moon’s current phase.
93-94
A book entitled “Van Richten’s Guide to the Hunter” which contains a ‘how to’ guide for monsters dealing with hunters written in a comedic and often snarky voice.
95-96
A hood that, when worn, gives one a skeletal-like appearance.
97-98
A green leather pouch containing soil from an unmarked grave.
99-100
A pendant in the shape of a golden dragon skull that occasionally speaks into your mind in an unknown tongue.

Would love to hear about the books u read in 2024, surprise bests, biggest disappointments?
I think I will do a multi part post over the coming weeks with reviews of all the books I read since I have about half of them written up already. For now I'll just say my two absolute favourite reads of the year were Botanical Daughter by Noah Medlock and Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova. Two very different books but both of them permanently altered my brain chemistry.
Below are my ratings for all the books I read and as I say, I'll try to post more in depth reviews over the next few weeks. My aim this year is to try and do proper reviews of the books I read as I'm reading them instead of having to go back several months later lmao.
Oh, and because it's something I'm always looking for specific recs for, I've highlighted the books with queer rep (that I remember) in pink, and the extreme horrors/books I advise checking trigger warnings for are marked with a lil skull.

Hi it's Quill! ❤️ You said you love to talk about writing, I'd love to hear some of it, so here it is: can you please answer 13, 14, 27, 63 and 64? AND as a bonus (if you want), answer the question you really wanted someone to ask you when you saw the list 😜
hi hi @shadowquill17, thank you sm for asking!! I am glad you would love to hear because I have written. A Lot. thank you for giving me license to yap lmao
13. what’s a common writing tip that you almost always follow?
more and more lately, I've been following the advice of "write the scenes in the order you want to write them, you can connect the dots later"- it just makes for such an easy flow as opposed to trying to write everything in perfect chronological order to get to the scenes you really want to write, because often by the time you GET to those scenes you're worn out by trudging through the writing in-between, or the words have fled from your brain. and oftentimes I end up majorly rewriting those scenes I wrote early on to make them fit with the stuff I wrote after, but like, it's such a relief to just. get the words on the page (or screen, technically). and now im realising that this tip may not exactly be COMMON but it's one I follow a lot kshdfkhsdfkh
14. how do you write emotional scenes? Do you ever feel what the characters feel? Do you draw from personal experiences?
I mean, I don't know that the writing of emotional scenes is something I really consciously think about? like. any scene that has characters in it is going to have emotions in it. because I am writing people, and people are feeling emotions. pretty much all the time. but I get that this question more means, like, big breakdowns or emotional climaxes or cathartic moments, so- I don't know? I don't know that I feel what the characters feel (although sometimes yeah probably); it's more that I just imagine how THEY would feel and act in the situation, based on how they've acted in the canon material and whatnot. for some things I have drawn on personal experience, like the description of Edwin's touch starvation in to a grave dug for fear is VERY drawn from my own physical feelings in similar situations, especially the "grip around his heart like a scream about to burst" description of the hug at the end. but mostly yeah I just, like, envision the scene in my head as if I was watching it as a scene on TV and then write it. writing emotion and emotional scenes is very well-practiced/comes very naturally to me, so it's not really something I think about anymore skhdfkshdfkh
27. What is your most and least favorite part of writing?
ooooh lemme think. I think most favorite: right when you have a fresh new idea and you're just on a ROLL writing it, everything's coming out so smooth and perfect and you feel so INSPIRED and so happy with how good it is/is gonna be. that's my favorite and then my LEAST favorite is that stage of editing where you've been looking at a piece so long that you start to hate it, and now phrasings and bits of dialogue you started out loving look weird and clunky, and oh lord why has no one ever told you you use this many semicolons??? that's too many semicolons. cool it with the semicolons. and the em dashes as well. coming back with an edit because I remembered another least favorite part (which really pertains more to the ABSENCE of writing): that specific mood where you have an idea that you know would be really really cool to write, you have the plot and character dynamics and arc and everything perfectly envisioned and you know it would be SO SO GOOD... but the actual spark of motivation that makes you want to write the thing just is not there. it's always like UGHHHHH IM SO SORRY I CANT DO YOU JUSTICE, YOU WOULD BE SO GOOD IF I ACTUALLY WANTED TO WRITE YOU TT. but instead it sits there and rots. I despise this
63. Something you hate to see in smut.
I don't know if it's an outright HATE, and I can push through it sometimes if the rest of the smut is more or less enjoyable, but like. I strongly dislike when there is not clear, explicit, enthusiastic consent established throughout the scene- like, if a character just DOES SOMETHING without asking first, or just saying like "can I try something?", and waiting to get their partner's agreement before proceeding. oftentimes I see this happen in fics with a dom/sub dynamic where the just-going-for-it-without-asking is written into the general commanding-ness of the dominant person in the relationship, which is just. eugh, no thanks. I think DBDA fic in particular has diminished my tolerance for lack of explicit verbal consent because so many DBDA smut fics have SUCH prominent and fantastic consent established. also when characters in a d/s dynamic are made to do or say things that are just completely out of character (imo) in the name of pushing that dynamic further
64. Something you love to see in smut.
Conversely, of course, I love seeing explicit and enthusiastic consent in smut, ESPECIALLY when someone asking "can I try something" "can I touch you" "is this okay" "do you want to stop" etc etc is answered with "anything" "do NOT stop" or just straight-up begging. like. such a lovely lovely way of confirming consent while maintaining the mood >> (although consent doesn't BREAK the mood anyway). or like, when a character does something on accident, the other character reacts with a gasp or a loud noise or whatever, and the first character is like "oh no did I hurt you??" and the second character (who was really into it) is like "FUCK NO DO THAT AGAIN" In the interest of giving a different answer tho, some other stuff I love in smut is dynamics where a character that hasn't gotten to let go or be vulnerable in this way really ever is given the space to do that, and even ENCOURAGED to... where someone who thinks they aren't good enough or don't deserve this gets assured irrevocably that they ARE and they DO through sex... cough cough sub Charles fics cough cough-- yeah generally just. some good home-grown life-affirming smut. thumbs up emoji also desperation/lack of composure/greed/intense unrestrained desire/want bordering on hunger is hot. especially characters that have been composed/trying to hold back before just fucking losing it. but I think that's kinda the name of the game with a lot of smut
hope you enjoyed this essay lmao

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR @loudclan-clangen
Welcome to the 7th generation of Loudclan, and along with it some improvement in my ability to draw cats! Loudclan is a legacy challenge, meaning the position of leader can only be inherited by a close relative of the last leader.
After inheriting the clan from her sister, Birchstar stared out her leadership by having Nightseeker in a secret affair with Pebblespot. Whether or not her lifelong mate Ferntumble knew, he never let on, as he was a loving and deeply involved parent for his adopted son. Pebblespot couldn’t stand to be sat on the sidelines, however, and after 13 moons of watching Nightseeker spend time with Ferntumble instead of him, he finally snapped, murdering Ferntumble and leaving him to be found on the Tulipclan Border. He managed to escape all of the suspicions of the clan, except for one. His son, Nightseeker, noticed the specks of blood speckling his paws as he attempted to comfort the young, grieving tom. The next moon, at only 14 moons old, Nightseeker used a rogue attack as cover to drag Pebblespot away, killing him in vengeance for his adopted father.
Birchstar always suspected that her son had a part to play in Pebblespot’s demise, and as she had no idea that he had killed her former mate, it caused a divide between them. She could never abandon her son, especially as he was her only heir, but she could never really forgive him either. The birth of her second litter only deepened their separation, with Birchstar telling them to be wary of their older brother. Her fear was unwarranted, however, as Nightseeker died pushing his sister Sparkpaw out of the way of a monster.
Birchstar continued to have litters into her old age, and though her first two relationships ended in tragedy, she had a long and happy life with Darkstem, only losing two kits while she was alive, Bigtooth and Smokekit. Opposed to what her appearance would have you believe, the majority of her leadership was peaceful and uneventful, ending when she died in her sleep at 158 moons old.
As her chosen heir, Scorchmoth took up the mantle of leadership at 63 moons old, even though it was against his anxious nature, making him Loudclan’s 9th leader, and the 1st male to lead since the founder, Owlstar.

Lady Kikyo Takahashi - 14 associations
(1) Animal: The Turkey Vulture. Cultures linked them with death because they eat carrion/would gather in the sky when remains were found signaling something had died. However, they actually perform a great service cleaning up bodies that could spread disease. They are a cleansing breeze sweeping up after death.
(2) Color: Red - In the cultures she identifies with, red is said to keep away evil/vile spirits, it represents strength and protection. It is also auspicious, symbolizing happiness and good fortune.
(3) Song:
I usually have non-lyrics for her purposely, because she can not speak, so I tend to lean on traditional Chinese and Japanese songs that can invoke a feeling. One that I always send others is a playlist called "You're a Heartbroken Empress" - though there are just a few handful that do have lyrics that would be suitable for Kikyo depending on circumstances! Rebirth: Warning - Incubus / 3 Libras - APC Love song: The Garden of Everything - Maaya Sakamoto / Steve Conte - every line is perfect for her: " Every touch, a temptation, and for every sense, a sensation.. " I have a few more but let's move along!
(4) Number: 3 - It represents the three stages: birth, death, and rebirth.
(5) Day or Night: Evening, she blooms under the tapestry of darkness.
(6) Plant: Hinganbana (flower) - The death bloom, known also as the corpse flower, when the season of summer shifts to fall, the flower rises from its dormancy.
(7) Smell: Frangipani ( plumeria ) a soft scent, though is associated with ghosts.
(8) Gemstone: Black Tourmaline, representing spiritual strength, remembrance and protection.
(9) Season: Autumn. When the splendor of life comes to fade, and we are greeted with the warmth of colors amid the cool chill of what is yet to come.
(10) Place: Othard. A land marred by the atrocities of war and loss, but where her fondest of memories yet are planted in its foundation.
(11) Food: Anything related with savory fish, cold noodle dishes, cute shaped foods that are vibrant with color. Traditional meals. 🍣🍘
(12) Astrological Sign: Though she is not Eorzean, I would choose Nald'thal in this case due to her adoptive family dealing with commerce and a different sort of underworld, while she herself deals in death.
(13) Element(s): Ironically, water ( if you know her lore, you'd know why ) for its pliancy, its gentle nature and cleansing qualities. It also represents death and rebirth, surprise!
(14) Drink: Matcha. Due to the elegant art that comes with the tea ceremony which involves in making and serving it. 🍵
tagged by the loveliest, thank you so very much. Decided to do this for Kikyo instead since Rivienne is a bit on the retired end: @alannah-corvaine | @chadhunkler | @allyennah tagging: @hallowed-ffxiv | @evuniel | @page-63 | @sealrock | @tsupertsundere and you! Whomever wants to do it, please feel free to tag me!
