Summary:

Arthur hasn't drifted with anyone in four months and he would have happily (well, maybe not so happily) continued that way, even if it means he doesn't get to pilot his Jaeger. He certainly doesn't want to drift with Merlin, who seems to be the best candidate; he wouldn't drift with Merlin for anything less than certain death. What a coincidence, then, that certain death decides to knock on the Shatterdome's door.

One thing that almost always bothers me about Merlin fics, but is not just the norm, but the rule:

When Arthur tries to repeal the magic ban, it is always the "stuffy old councilmen" who oppose him. Meanwhile, the one or two younger advisors are the ones who are in favor.

Now, I understand why that is. People look at real life and of course, they put it in fics. So if you see that it's the old people who stand against what you fight for, you would imagine that would happen in fantasy as well.

See, here's the thing though: in the Merlin universe, I guarantee that the older people would be the ones who would approve of magic coming back.

And the reason is the very same reason why you despise the elders here today: they are stuck in the old ways, so to speak.

Those men who are 60 or 70 under Arthur's rule would have been 40 or 50 when the purge happened. They would have already been used to a world with magic and would have fought against such an old tradition being outlawed.

Instead, the young men of 30 or even 20, would hardly know a world in which magic was known to be good and everywhere. For them, it would be an old dangerous thing that only mad old people with bad intentions would want to reinstate.

They are people who grew up like Arthur. Indoctrinated by Uther's propaganda. The ones who grew up only seeing magic's destruction.

Of course, this is fiction, YOUR fiction. So you can decide who the bad guys are. But realistically it would be someone older to not only support the return to the old ways but to push for it.

Would they be against Arthur marrying a servant? (a man????????) yes... That's very likely. But not when it comes to magic.

(Of course, there are always exceptions... But still)

Sometimes I forget that fanon shit isn't canon. Like in the Merlin fandom, what do you mean Arthur wasn't in love with Merlin and KNEW IT when he was about to die?? Or in the teen wolf fandom what do you mean Liam didn't get his IED from his biological father and the name of his parents isn't Jenna and David geyer?? Like these things are full on Canon to me.

That's why I add subtext when I tell my friends about the shows I like. And the funny thing is, it doesn't change the perspective of things. I can tell my friends "this is where this guy felt this and this girl did that beforehand" and it doesn't change the scene, it just gives it more depth.

So fanon is canon. Thanks for listening to my little rant.

I want something that:

• retains their original dynamic (throughout the whole fic, even after they become romantic)

• is slowburn, possibly maybe feelings realization (and when I say slow I mean SLOW)

• doesn’t have weird cringe self-insert ocs

• has them act in-character (this includes the side characters! everyone in character)

is funny with fun banter between Merlin and Arthur

The first thing Merlin notices is Arthur's face peering out from the tent. Around him, knights roar with laugher, jostling his shoulders in an attempt to draw him into the festivities—and just this once, in the wake of war, Merlin decides to acquiesce.

He raises a tankard, clashing it with the others and chuckling as Gwaine spills half of his drink on the dirt. He can feel Arthur staring; he chooses not to stare back. Just this once.

And Arthur is indeed staring. He stands in the opening of the tent, far enough from the fire that he feels the cold night chill, and watches in silent fondness as his knights share one last night of joy before the inevitable bloodshed that will greet them in the morning. He watches as Elyan laughs hysterically at Percival's impression of their fierce leader, unaware of Arthur's presence. He watches as Leon snickers and smiles in Arthur's direction, silently inviting him to join.

Through the drunken laughter and rowdy companionship, Arthur watches.

Because though his knights fill the scene, all he sees is Merlin.

Based on this post I wrote sometime ago, I got a little idea

Arthur was furious, he had been waiting too much for his supper. Merlin definitely was going to pay for that.

He had been in such a good mood after the improvised hunt he went on that afternoon. He knew Merlin tended to do this little acts of revenge when he makes him cover for him, be a little late, have the water a bit too cold or burning hot, pick the itchy nightshirt, tiny thing that he allowed for the sake of the strange relationship they had. But it had been more than three candle marks since the night bell. He was hungry.

Could he have called for another servant to bring him food? Yes, yes he could. But it was a question of principles.

And he was the prince.

"Call for Merlin, bring him here, now!" he roared to the guard posted at his door, who gave him a surprised look at the sudden request.

"Sire?"

"You know what?" he decided "leave it, I will look for him myself, and I will make him eat my boots when I find him!"

Arthur went to Gaius's chambers muttering threads to the air "If he has gone to the tavern, so help me god I'll have him made stocks just for him" he said fuming as he strut his way to the tower.

"MERLIN!" he shouted when he entered the infirmary.

No one answered. The room was badly lit and Gaius was nowhere to be seen, which meant that Gaius was likely doing his nightly rounds.

"Merlin!" he called again, while he marche to Merlin's tiny room without paying any mind. He opened the door with a bang, and tried to make sense of the space, this room was almost in total darkness, the light of the moon slipping through the window.

"Merlin!" said while shoving the bundle of sheets in Merlins bed out of the way, only to find it empty, "oh, ho ho... I'm going to kill him" he declared turning around and shouting his name out, just for the sake of burning some steam.

"Sire?" he heard the door squeak open while a tired looking Gaius entered the chambers "Is everything ok?" he said quietly.

"Of course not, Gaius. Have you got any idea of where in the world could be my useless of a manservant?" Gaius looked stricken by the question.

"Why do you ask your highness? Do you need him for something?" his tone was strange but Arthur hadn't caught it yet.

"Obviously Gaius, I been waiting for my food for ages, Im properly famished and it's all his fault. So don't try to protect him, tell me the truth, Where is he? Is he in the tavern? I bet he is..."

"Merlin is here" he said slowly, and pointed to the cot in the corner of the room.

"He sleeping! I can't believe him, Is he drunk? He must be, not hearing my call" he kept ranting while he got close to the cot.

"Gods, Child!" Arthur stopped on his tracks, Gaius hadn't talked to him like that in a long time. "Can't you see?" he said, and now Arthur could detect something in his voice, not yet understanding what it was.

Gaius took a candle and got close to him so Arthur could see.

"What?" Suddenly his voice didn't work correctly, and felt simultaneously the need to see what Gaius meant and to turn away and leave without never understanding what Gaius meant.

He breathed and looked at the cot.

Merlin was pale, sweaty and dirty. More than usual, and his face looked sucked in, his hair looked oily, he was lying on his side and his hands were resting next to his face, dark with dirt and his wrist red and raw. He could not see very well, but he guessed that his neck would be in a similar condition.

"How much time he was in the stocks?" he asked softly.

Merlin had told him that it was a common occurrence, when Arthur decided to flee of his responsibilities that he needed a moment to breathe, Uther punished Merlin a bit by putting him in the stocks. But Arthur did it too, he wouldn't say constantly, but Merlin probably would. The fact was that the stocks had never put him in this position before.

Gaius shook his head "He was just released" he answered with disappointment, he was disappointed at him "Your father was rather upset you weren't at the meeting with Lord Durham" Gaius he'd moved to his working table and was grinding herbs, he almost managed to sound detached.

"I... I know" Arthur didn't know what to say. He kept looking at Merlin in the semidarkness. A whole day in the stocks, still, he'd seen people in worst state than Merlin get through that, and not end up like this. Something was missing.

"He was in the stocks the whole day Arthur" Gaius explained a bit chocked up, and then moved behind Merlin with two bowls, une with water and a cloth and the other where he had been grinding the herbs. He pulled up his shirt and with the cloth he started to clean softly. Arthur's stomach started to ache, suddenly the hunger and fury that had moved him across the castle disappeared and transformed itself in something else.

"There were no breaks, and no one was allowed to bring him food or water" Arthur tried not to gasp, while the old man kept cleaning, and even in the darkness he could see how the cloth was staining an ugly dark color.

"Uther seemed to be under the impression that he had some kind of knowledge of your whereabouts, because he kept asking. And then he got tired. And he had Merlin flogged" Arthur had to close his eyes, he was shaking, he had known it was coming, Gaius did not try to hide the situation, and it was obvious something more had happened but to put it in to words made so real it hurt.

"Merlin is a member of the royal household..." he said weakly, that punishment was disproportionate, that was something he would expect for a prisoner or a traitor. The guilt settled in his throat, in his chest, in his stomach, he was afraid of asking more, suddenly afraid of getting closer, of seeing it with both his eyes.

"Ten lashes" Gaius answered the unasked question and Arthur sucked his breath.

He had to stabilize himself. Ten lashes were for the weaker, it was enough to kill.

"The sun was high in the sky when they did it" Gaius kept talking and Arthur just wanted him to shut up he needed time to process "He spent the day in the sun, with the wounds open" he took the herbs in his hands and started applying them to Merlin's back, the man did not even flinch "We are lucky the infection hasn't taken him already" Arthur let himself fall in the bench trying to control himself. "So Arthur, I'd like to think that whatever you were doing, whatever secret quest Merlin paid the price for, was important"

"I..." he didn't know why he was talking, there were no words that could be said that excused this, just "I am so sorry" chocked out, his voices sounding unstable.

Gaius did not answer. He kept applying the herbs in silence.

Merlin Fic Prompts

Arthur gets separated and injured while on patrol and is taken in by the kind forest Druid Merlin who nurses Arthur back to health. During this time Arthur sees a side of magic he’s never been exposed to before and questions everything he’s been taught.

A series of letters Merlin’s writes to his mom telling her about his adventures in Camelot

Winter Soldier AU where Morgana discovers Merlin had magic but doesn’t know he’s Emrys. Uses the Fomarrah on him and instead of killing Arthur orders him to swear undying loyalty to her, to do anything she asks. Merlin essentially becomes like her Winter Soldier and wrecks havoc on villages. When Arthur hears about a dangerous sorcerer named Myrddin attacking villages he goes to investigates, still depressed about the lose of Merlin, and is shocked to discover that it Myrddin is Merlin except Merlin doesn’t remember him or anything before the fomarrah was implanted. Arthur now has a new goal of getting his best friend back and break Morgana’s hold on him.

The Purple Tunic. Merlin’s birthday comes and goes with no celebration, Gaius being overrun with patients and Merlin stuck with an impossibly long list of chores from Arthur. When Arthur learns that Merlin’s birthday had passed he feels bad and leaves the purple tunic for him in his room as a gift.

Arthur kills a Druid women and as she lays dying she roughly grabs his arm and curses him to experience suffer any wound he deals. Arthur struggles with his self worth now that he can’t protect his people as a knight without hurting himself

Arthur and Merlin get cursed so that whenever one gets hurt the other suffers the same wound (like Barbara and Strickler from Trollhunters)

Merthur WandaVision AU

S3 E12 AU where Merlin does actually fight Gwaine and Arthur is the one that has to be physically held back

Seeing Double. Merlin has always had a lot of work what with helping Gaius, being Arthur’s manservant, and saving everyone’s lives in a near daily basis. One day he is so busy he tries a new spell that’s suppose to create a double of you that lasts for 24 hours. Arthur thinks he’s going mad because he keeps seeing double of Merlin.

Mama’s Boy. Hunith is taken prisoner by some bandits and that sets Merlin on a warpath to get her back with Arthur at his side.

Merlin gets captured by a dark sorcerer who knows he’s Emrys and has him chained up in cold iron. While he’s imprisoned the sorcerer bloodlets him, planning to sell the blood of Emrys on the black market keep Merlin alive enough not to fight back.

Arthur falls and hurts his arm. Merlin examines it and diagnoses it, “You’ve fractured your ulna.” Gwaine perks up at this, “Ulna? I think I dated an Ulna once.”

While picking herbs for Gaius Merlin finds an injured and orphaned fox kit and brings it back with him. One day it gets out of his room and chaos ensues. He nearly catches it in Arthur’s room when Arthur returns and he tries to play it cool.

AU where as Freya lay dying in Merlin’s arms they get married, using blades of grass as their rings. The knights don’t notice at first but eventually one of them asks about it and Merlin gets all sad.

Merlin wakes in the middle of the night to someone breaking into Gaius’s chambers, covered in blood

A servant of two masters AU where instead of sending Merlin in to assassinate Arthur she makes a sting bulb of Merlin and sends it in. A day after it gets sent away Merlin breaks out of Morgana’s and races to save Arthur. Stabs a sword through his clone’s stomach. When it dies it turns into a pile of humus. Arthur starts to get suspicious of Plant!Merlin when he stops eating and he swears he saw Merlin stick his finger in water and drink it. Plant!Merlin also gets weak after long period’s without sunlight and ‘wilts’. Gwiane refuses to give up on his search for Merlin and sets out on his own. Finds Merlin in Morgana’s hovel and together they escape back to Camelot.

Modern Day Merlin, Merlin starts suffering from symptoms of Mahd Wy'ry which affects and causes him to have psychotic episodes at random, due to the weight of his memories. Leon finds him during one of these episodes.

That scene from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron where Merlin holds an injured Arthur on the banks of a river when the bad guys find them and tear them apart despite their pleas. The knights find Arthur and once he’s stronger they set out to save Merlin.

Merlin and Arthur argue that the other wouldn’t last a day in the others shoes so Arthur comes up with the idea of ‘swapping places’ while they are visiting another kingdom that has never met Arthur before. The knights are in on it. They swap clothes and for a week Merlin is Arthur and Arthur is Merlin.

When kids start disappearing in the middle of the night Merlin sets out to investigate and is nearly killed

Morgana visits Gaius because she feels nauseous and while she’s there she throws up on her dress. Merlin lets her borrow some of his clothes and Arthur walks in sees her and thinks they’re courting. Arthur gets jealous.

That scene from Disneys Robin Hood where they dress as fortune tellers but it’s Merlin and Arthur and they do it in order to get into a bandits keep without arousing suspicion and getting something of importance they stole (Arthurs mothers sigil? His mothers ring?)

Merlin has parasomnia and often wanders the castle at night, often to Arthurs room

Merlin opens a haven for magical creatures/beings/people. Arthur wanders into and is nearly drowned by a naiad but Merlin saves him

Merlin Tarzan AU with a hint of Valka from HTTYD2. Balinor refuses to help Uther trap the last dragon and instead frees it. He takes shelter in Ealdor where he falls in love and has a child with Hunith. One day Uther finds them and, finding themselves cornered with no chance of escape, Balinor calls upon Kilgarrah. Balinor is killed and Hunith is taken prisoner to be used as bait for Merlin someday. Kilgarrah takes baby Merlin to a safe haven for dragons where he is raised by dragons. Many years later Merlin heard about the legend of the dragon egg and sets out to find it. During this journey he meets Prince/King Arthur. Although rivals at first they soon realize they have the same goal, return magic and dragons to Camelot.

Dragonlord side effects. The days following the activation of his Dragonlord powers Merlin starts to experience some side effects. Each chapter is a different side effect.

After Arthur becomes king he reinstates the holiday Saturnalia. Merlin gets elected the “Mock King” giving him a free pass to cause as much mischief and mayhem as he would like

I had a merthur fic idea that it's keeping me awake at night and I just had to write it down (METHUR PROMPT)

OK, so hear me out. What if merlin after having lived 1500+ years has forgot Camelot?

Like not the idea of Camelot, he knows what happened and knows it's true, but like the specifics are blurry. He suddenly can't remember how did the castle looked, or what was the name of the cook, things that, to him made all of the experience, personal. But it gets worse, he can't remember the face of his mother, or Gaius's voice, he can't remember Arthur, so he panics.

He has had SO MUCH TIME, and so he has studied a lot about his magic, most of it through trial and error and personal experimentation, because most of the magics in the world have already vanished, so he tries to create a new spell, to make himself remember, fearing that he won't recognize Arthur when he came back.

This new spell is meant to help him remember, relive if you will, the memories that he lost. He pours every bit of knowledge into this project, practicing with very advance Alzheimer patients (because of course Merlin is a doctor, and a chemist, and a profesor... he has had time alright) and he makes a lot of progress. He spends years into this, but the progress is too little, he can make an Alzheimer patient remember up to 10 years in the best of the cases, but he has lived thousands, 10 years was virtually nothing.

Frustrated, and honestly more than a little drunk, and sad, he decides to wing it, he shouts the spell sobbing and uses all of the magic that he can, begs the gods to listen and he also threatens them for good mesure and then he passes out.

Basically he time travels, but he DOES NOT KNOW THAT. He thinks the spells work so fantastically he is having a really fucking amazing lucid dream of sorts, he doesn't remember the specifics so he can't know that he is not exactly following his original steps.

So we have a homesick Merlin running around Camelot, way to happy just to be there and maybe a bit high on magic (because of course in the past there's so much more magic than he's grown used to with the years).

Obviously shenanigans ensue, a 21 century mind in a medieval setting, a wizard that is used to using his powers regularly because nobody believed in magic anyways, a doctor with modern techniques, a slightly shortsighted profesor who is use to wearing reading glasses, a lovesick idiot who forgot the face of his first and most true love... He does something (I am yet to figure that part out) and make a big change in the course of the events and finally finds out that he timetraveled and that he is probably fucking up history for good, and tries to fix it maybe.

That's basically the basis of the idea, I think there a lot of possibilities this could go and I really love it. I wanted to write it here so if anybody wanted to write something with this idea or expand on it it could be fun

A 2x10 Sweet Dreams rewrite. After the ordeal with Hengist, Gwen and Arthur decide they are better suited as friends. Arthur still gets enchanted to fall in love with Lady Vivian, Merlin still tries to save his royal ass, and True Loves' Kiss is still the cure. But if Gwen isn't Arthur's true love, then who could it possibly be?

Arthur's been acting strangely ever since he'd learned about Merlin's magic, which he found completely understandable. But asking Merlin to use magic in front of him, when it so obviously made the king uncomfortable? Obviously, Arthur was disgusted by his magic, by him. That had to be it. Right?

So because I am very very incredibly bored I decided to tell chat gpt my idea and have it create a summary for the fic.
