Me and cole's dog got cole's parent's dog pregnant and she had her puppies today. All 8 have the same neck spot that their dad has and i'm so excited.

I hope this question doesn't come off as stupid, but I'm curious. I know at the top of your blog you say you deal with cat behaviors so I don't know if this is in your wheel house exactly, but I figured you might know some other people to ask or resources to consult.

When it comes to dogs and their instincts from the breed that they are, how much or often should you worry that their instincts from that breed? It is just something that can happen from overstimulation, or in really specific circumstances? Obviously people should keep in mind dog breeds and what they are for vs what kind of home they can provide, but when it comes to dogs how much should you worry about the breed and a tendency to bite? How much does what they are raised with in terms of people vs instincts matter?

I've only ever had one dog (Australian Shepard, absolute fantastic dog) and my mom is looking at getting another dog, and plans to adopt from a shelter. I don't want her to choose a dog she isn't prepared for but it'll likely be a mutt or some kind of mix.

I believe any dog can (and will) bite if under enough stress, but their willingness to resort to biting heavily depends on the breed. In these cases, training is less about teaching them NOT to bite, and more about giving them alternative solutions besides biting. But like... a dog that was bred to guard things is going to have biting as an option. It's what we made them to be.

Like you've got experience with herding breeds. You've probably heard that it's really typical for herding breeds to nip at children's heels and similar. Again, that's just something we've bred them to do. It's natural for them, but it's also pretty undesirable, so we spend a lot of time training them NOT to do that and give them something else to do instead.

Hound dogs will bay, herding dogs will herd, terriers will chase small animals, and some dogs were bred to bite.

For resource reading, I recommend Breed Differences in Dog Behavior: Why Tails Wag Differently by James Ha, Renee Ha, and Tracy Brad. I don't agree with everything they've written, but it touches on a lot of your questions.

Unfortunately it's expensive :/ I was lucky enough to borrow a copy from a friend and it's on my list of Books To Buy once the price falls a bit. James Ha also wrote Dog Behavior: Modern Science and Our Canine Companion, which is also a good resource. It doesn't touch breed much, but I still find it pretty useful.

@doberbutts talks a lot in detail about his work with his doberman, Fenris, and bitework. I feel like this is his exact wheelhouse.

@shrimpsisbugs is another highly knowledgeable dog trainer that I respect a lot that has experience in similar areas.

So I've been wanting a dog for SO long and I'm still not in a position to get one in good conscience, but together with a partner it could maybe be possible. Gaz wants very classic, intelligent medium-large dog. German Shepard, Labrador, malamute, something like that. And he acts like he’s your dad when you ask about it. Like “are you sure we can handle the responsibility???” Like I dunno Kyle if you’re telling me that I can trust you with an automatic rifle in a foreign country but I can’t trust you to co-parent a dog then I’m not paying my fucking taxes this year. Anyway, it likes him more even though you’re the principal food giver, and it has a simple, pretty name like Lucy or Daisy.

You’re going to have to ask Soap about getting a dog on your second date if you wanna beat him. This man is 100% the type to bring home an animal without asking or telling you. Terrier of some kind— friend of his was giving away puppies and he couldn’t help himself because without you he has no impulse control. You come home to the puppy tearing into one of his boots and you’re like “Johnny. What is this.” And he’s like “That’s Gargamel” as if that should satisfy all of your curiosity.

Ghost is kinda reluctant. He doesn’t think of himself as nurturing. He doesn’t like noise. He’s all “if we’re gonna have a dog, it’s gonna need discipline from day one”. You get a mutt from a shelter, some pit bull mix. On day 2 he’s letting his leg fall asleep because the dog is sleeping on his lap. It has a generic dog name, like Spike.

Price thinks a dog is a good idea. Could keep you company while he’s away, and you probably need some more time to warm up to living with him before he suggests a baby. He insists you decide on the breed because you’ll be spending the most time with it, but he’s clearly very biased. He’s pushing for a dog with floppy ears. This man wants a wrinkly dog. You’re getting a basset hound, is what I’m saying. He decided when you brought up getting a dog. The dog gets a rank, also. Sergeant Columbo. Sarge for short.

König does not realize this, but his favored breeds are all intelligent, somewhat violent, and require a lot of grooming. Childishly, he doesn’t love the idea of getting a dog because it means sharing your attention with an animal, but at the same time he feels it would be cruel to deny you that considering that he can’t be home all of the time. You get a poodle or a bedlington terrier. It has a cute name like Mitzi, but like. That thing is tearing squirrels to shreds. And he loves it. But it loves you more.

Nikolai agrees on a dog, so long as it has utility as well as being a companion. He’ll get you a doberman, and it’ll be trained at a highly rated obedience school, and further trained by him to basically defend you to the death. And you can tell him that you don’t think anyone is ever gonna try to pull anything on you while this dog is around, but he just says it doesn’t hurt to be careful. Its name is something edgy like Dante, Mephistopheles, Cerberus. He thinks a scary dog needs a scary name, even if it acts like a puppy when it’s around you.

Ok so I got started on dog breeds for the batfam and I know that there have been thoughts abt it before so here are mine! (Also fair warning I go off a mixture of vibes, looks, and basic breed temperment AND im not a dog breed specialist or anything like that, im pretty much just using the akc website for these breeds)

I'm gonna start with Alfred, honestly I was at first thinking a burmese or standard poodle but they just weren't really clicking right. Eventually I settled on him being either a schnauzer or terrier which helped narrow my options greatly! Looking through them all I decided the Giant Shnauzer suited him best in the end. The breed is very loyal, hard-working, and can be quite the guard!

Alfred - Giant Shnauzer:

I saw a post saying Bruce would be a Belgian Sheepdog and at first I completely agreed due to their looks but when I learned a bit more about their personality i was like hmmm so I went looking for something more in line with how I see him. Belgium Teruven popped up right after, and though similar, I thought it fit him better. Honestly could have just been due to the different wording but I like them better for Bruce regardless lol

Bruce - Belgian Teruven:

Dick was surprisingly a LOT harder than I thought he'd be. There were three breeds I got stuck between: the Dalmation, Mudi, and Norwegian elkhound. All very different dogs by all means yet each fit him quite well. I dismissed Dalmation first, though they're agile, they weren't quite friendly enough. Mudi was next for much the same reasons. It was around this time that I had also started considering a Great Pyrenees for him, seeing as they are known as both loving and vicious–though I ended up not going with it because they're a bit too calm (hm maybe alfred should be a Pyrenees instead?). That left me with the Norwegian Elhound. The breed is very dependable, friendly, and just fits his vibes looks-wise.

Dick - Norwegian Elkhound:

I know most people give Jason a mixed breed or just say he's a mutt because he came from a lower-income household but honestly that doesn't sit well with me, especially when we're giving the others their own breeds. As soon as I found the Anatolian Shepard I was like YES THATS HIM!! They're a large breed that is fiercely protective of their herd and are very loyal and independent. They'll protect what's theirs and are surprising nimble!

Jason - Anatolian Shepard:

Cass was honestly quite difficult for me. I quickly crossed out any typical herding breeds (Shepards, Collies, ect ect) and sight-hounds because she was raised to be LETHAL and I know that any breed can be deadly if trained right (or wrong) they just weren't what I was looking for. I played around with a few breeds like the akita, or a basenji, but they weren't quite right. But then, I came across a breed named Kai Ken. They're a medium sized dog, originating in Japan and used for hunting a wide range of animals in Japan's mountains. The Kai Ken are extremely versatile (they're known to CLIMB TREES) and loving of their family. They are also born completely black but develope a subtle brindle coat that helps them camouflage and I just think that's SO COOL???

Cass - Kai Ken:

Now, I'll be real with yall, I don't know much about Duke and wasn't really looking for a breed for him because of that but I came across one that clicked with him in my mind? The breed is called Large Munsterlander which is just a wild name BUT they're very cooperative and calm. This breed is very versatile and are meant for hunting–they're sense of smell is impressive and they're quite determined when it comes to hunting and retrieving any game.

Duke - Large Munsterlander:

Tim Tim Timothy, though high-class, I honestly thought at first that he'd be a Border Collie. However, as I was perusing dog breeds, I realized that the Collie was only representing half of him, as it didn't really match his looks or vibes, merely his personality. So I thought and thought and then–BAM, my brain gave me two choices, the Ibizan Hound or the Pharoah Hound. After figuring out that they were quite similar in personality, I decided to go with the Ibizan Hound. Funnily enough, they can be very attached but not prone to overtly showing it!

Tim - Ibizan Hound:

Now, Damian is a little trickier because I could fully see him taking after Bruce in having the same breed both bc they're blood related and just the vibes but, though I couldn't find much information on them, based on my personal experience with them I do think the Black Mouth Cur would be a good match up to Damian. They can be very territorial of people and things they think is theirs if not properly socialized. Otherwise they'll be very loving and protective of those they've deemed family and are built for hunting large game that are common around farms.

So insight to me and then batfamily is I have two dogs one is a husky and one is a mutt of a Shepard and a lab.

My dog (the mix) I am very lucky, wakes up at the slightest noise, will bark if he hears anything. Also extremely protective. I get up he's following me. I relay on him so much day to day.

My husky is lazy, he plays with his ball and fucks with his brother that's about it.

But dogs are useful in the oddest of ways. Anxious, you swear your hearing things , something's there dog is dead to the world all good. Someone's at the door dogs up and paying attention. Don't want to get up have to dog need to go out.

I wonder if for the batfamily how helpful Damain's farm truly is. Comfort after a nightmare, dog is sleeping your safe nothing is coming. Knock at the door you can't maybe bring a weapons here comes Titus.

You swear something crashed but Alfred and Ace are unbothered alright.

Dick who doesn't want to move ever again, Titus has to go out and Damain is no were to be found.

Ace who is laying on Tim or even Jason grounding.

Even batcow who damain can just sleep with she will wake up if something is amiss ok.

You can bring a dog into the bathroom while you shower nothing can walk through that door without them noticing you don't have to leave the shower curtain open.

Bruce who popped a stitch and can't move right "Titus go get Damian" who gets Alfred

Alfred the cat purring on injured people's chest.

Tim who can stay up at night without constant anxiety, Titus is sleeping it's ok.

Animals are the best.

Pepper The Red Husky!

In this AU Phil/Pepperman is a Red Husky, why? Not only do they have his striking blue eyes, but they are also active, smart, loud and ecsentric, kinda like our beloved Pepper 🤭

I mean look at them! They are giving Pepperman vibes XD

Pepper is quite the spoiled doggy, he is the type of dog that gets dressed up by his owner but doesn't mind, in fact, he likes it!

But wait there's more! Specifically I'm giving you the one Dog that Pepper insists on spending time with :3

Vigilante the German Sheprador Mutt!

German Shepardors (Ger. Shepard X Labrador) are Hardworking Dogs, with plenty of energy, smart and loyal perfect for farm work.

Vigi is both a Herding dog (mostly works with Cattle) but also is a guard dog, barking at whoever tries to break into the farm and sometimes fighting off the Coyotes, this is why his owner gave him a Wolf collar to make sure he is safe.

Now why do Vigi and Pepper know eachother?

Welp, one day Vigi's owner when to the town and brought him along, Vigi walked away and by accident met with Pepper (who was a puppy at the time) and so the, at the time, lil doggy decided that they should be friends (despite the fact that Vigi was at least 4 human years older than him)

I actually spent some time researching because I wanted to see what kind of species Pitou would be. While there were some good candidates, I felt it was more appropriate that he be a mutt. I guess if I had to head canon, he's a mix of german shepard and Anatolian Shepherd Dog.

Pitou would have met more than just the Blue Robes. There was a scene I originally planned to draw where he'd have run into some people trapped in the Void as a consequence of existing outside of time, as their original timeline no longer existed. They would have either be nomads wandering around or have since created their own little city for other non-existential people. Pitou would have pitied them, but he would have been too laser focused to find Resh'an to stay.

Another scenario would have had Pitou run into Death, essentially playing out that little series of tags in a previous Pitou comic where he'd declare his intent to live until Resh'an was happy. But I feel like that kind of scenario is best left kept out. It happened without really needing to be shown; why else is Pitou still around centuries later, ya know?

As you can imagine, I don't think Resh'an is a pet person. He would absolutely forget they exist and they'd die out. Even per-immortality, he just never cared too much to own one. He doesn't hate animals (certainly, he prefers them to children), but he's not the kind to coddle up to a little furry friend. Pitou being immortal has been a boon for him, both for his mental health and giving him a better idea on how to properly care for another creature. Though one could argue Pitou is taking better care of his master than Resh'an is to his dog. (No, Resh'an didn't care to own birds instead in spite of the whole eagle thing, he thought they were too damn loud.)

"I'll take her."

Did you hear him right? You think that's what you heard the man say... How odd, he had only gotten not even a look at your battered form, not even seen how you fight, and yet he's going to take you. You slowly turn once more to peer over your shoulder at the man on the other side of the bars; Ghost- you heard the workers call him.

With narrowed eyes you know what's about to happen, it happens every time you're chosen for a job and must be transferred. Gas starts to come up from holes in your cell, making your vision grow hazy and slowly start to fall asleep.

Ghost watches from the other side of your cell, watching in discomfort as your gassed to sleep, your now lifeless body being manhandled by the workers that entered your cell the second you were down. Ghost shifts in his spot as he sees your wrists and ankles chained together in pair with a muzzle around your mouth that sits over your lower face and wraps around tightly to the back of your head.

"Is this necessary..?"

Ghost speaks up and glares at one of the workers bringing you to your feet and dragging you out the doors of the facility and towards the chopper. The worker that he got a hold of nods his head and makes a gesture for Ghost to follow him as they walk to the chopper.

"Yes sir- she's... Not always privy to being assigned to a new handler- this is just for insurance that she won't lash out."

Ghost just grunts in response, this was going to be a pain in his ass. You were going to be a pain in his ass. The Lieutenant watches as you're forcefully shoved into a cage in the back of the chopper, his dark eyes beneath his mask narrowing as you're locked in and your chains are secured to the hull of the chopper. With one last glance at the facility, Ghost climbs into the back of the chopper, choosing to take one of the seats near where you're caged.

When the chopper lifts off the tarmac, Ghost notices you flinch as you sit with your knees to your chest- the same position you were in back in your old cell. Trauma response? Maybe. Ghost thinks to himself as his eyes glaze over you, noticing every nick, bruise, and scar on your body that's obvious. After a few boring seconds of silence the Lieutenant finally speaks up, addressing you for the first time.

"My name's-"

"Simon."

Ghost all but flinches as the sound of your voice, the man steeling himself instantly. The hell did he jump for? You're just some mutt. Though, his eyes darken and narrow into sharp slits beneath his mask when he realizes you said his name; not his callsign or last name, his first name.

"Workers liked to chat about things on the down low away from us. Wrong thing to do around creatures with enhanced hearing."

To practically prove your point, one of your ears flick atop your head before flattening back down against your skull. Ghost honestly didn't know how to feel; he wanted to throttle the blabber mouths that even dared utter his name, while also basking in the sound of your voice. It was muffled from the muzzle around your mouth, but despite that Ghost notices the pitch is strained and scratchy as you speak in a quiet whisper that's barely audible above the whirring of the chopper's blades, while also holding some semblance of softness under all the grit and gore of your very being.

"Right. It should just be Ghost to you though, I don't really do familiarity."

Ghost hears your sigh and simply stares at you, giving you an expectant look conveyed through just his dark eyes. When you catch on to what he wants you give him your name, muttering it into the air quietly so that Ghost almost doesn't catch it. The Lieutenant registers your name, grumbling it out with his gravelly voice and accent before nodding stiffly and looking you up and down, staring at your tail wrapped around your thigh and ears atop your head.

"The hell are you anyways?"

The man before you questions. Probably not the best tone of voice in his approach, but Ghost didn't think you wanted to be babied, you don't look the type to him. Your eyes slowly trail up to Ghost's, simply keeping eye contact with the man before you murmur your species, German Shepard.

Ghost hums, breaking eye contact with you and looking down at his boots for a fleeting second before looking out one of the small circular windows in the chopper. Guess that was typical, it's the average breed of hybrid that enlisted into the forces.

part 1: trouble

Your room was lit only by the dim glow of your bedside lamp, casting long shadows across the length of your walls and ceiling. The wind rattled against the glass of the window, a soft noise that filled the deafening silence of the house, as you pulled your curtains tight, turning to face Dallas with a disapproving frown. 

“You’re gonna get caught if you’re not more careful.”

He looks over at you as he shrugs off his jacket, slinging it over the back of your chair and kicking off his boots. His eyes are dark and piercing in the low lighting, but there's a gentle curve to his mouth, something tender you can't quite place. 

“Kinda difficult when that mutt downstairs barks every time I get near the house.” He mumbles, sitting himself down on the edge of the bed and holding his arms out for you. You cross the room in a few strides, not protesting when he pulls you close, his hand resting lightly on your hips.

“Yeah, well, that mutt is trained to bark at hoods like you. Scares them off.” You brush some hairs back from his forehead, looking down at him with fond eyes. There's a bruise blossoming across his cheek, just visible in the weak light, purple and slightly puffy. He grunts quietly as you brush over the mark, grabbing your wrist and pulling you away with as much care as he can manage.

“Didn't scare me away though, huh?”

“Clearly not,” you muse, moving out of his arms to sit back on the mattress, lying back and letting him rest his head on your stomach. The way he relaxes against you tells you all you need to know about his day, and you decide it's best not to ask for exact details, instead opting to card your fingers through his messy locks. 

“What'd you get hauled in for this time?” you ask after a while, your voice quiet, afraid of waking your parents sleeping across the hall. Dallas scoffs in response, shifting slightly, his hands wandering under the fabric of your shirt.

“Got in a fight with some punk on the wrong side of town,” he drawls, running one hand up and down your abdomen slowly. “Me and Shepard handed his ass to him. Sent him running with his tail between his legs. Then the fuzz showed up.”

It was quiet for a moment, both you and Dallas listening intently to the sounds of traffic in the distance. It wasn’t uncommon for your boyfriend to get into trouble, and more often than not, your dad would be complaining about “that damn Winston kid” at the dinner table. It was better your family not knowing about the two of you being together, especially since they'd spent so long trying to keep you away from crowds like him. 

“You should stop fighting so much,” you whisper, but it's a useless comment. Dallas won't ever stop fighting, not for you, not for anyone. That's just how he is. Still, he hums.

“Maybe.” But you know he doesn't mean it. 

He glances up at you, a half-smile on his lips. "Thanks for comin' to visit me whilst I was getting an earful from your old man." His fingers trail up your collarbone, sending shivers through you, and you roll your eyes, letting your head fall back against your pillows.

"I didn't pay you a visit," you say pointedly. "I was dropping off lunch. Didn't know you would be there." 

Dallas sighs deeply, closing his eyes. "Whatever..." he trails off, and you watch him carefully, taking in every little feature that makes up who and what Dallas Winston is. He's a hoodlum, he's trouble, he's dangerous. But he's also yours. And that's enough for now.

Curtis Gang Pets

Curtis brothers: canonically had a yellow cur dog that I’m saying was half German Shepherd and used to work with Mr. Curtis when he fought in World War II-the dog’s name was Doggy, courtesy of 2 year old Darry

Johnny: The stray cats and dogs LOVE him and he loves them back. He only has two who really stick by his side though who he considers pets—a brown tabby with green eyes named Cinnamon and a mutt named Mocha.

Dally: He has a stray cats who would follow him around endlessly that he used to just ignore, but eventually he just adopted it. it’s name is Lil’ Dal…or that’s what he calls it around company anyway. Its name is really Misha, he just doesn’t wanna admit it. It’s only nice to him though. It needs Jackson Galaxy STAT

Two Bit: Has an army of Betta fish that either just eat each other or he forgets to feed them/clean their bowl…so they die off quick enough. He also has two mice named Micky and Minnie who he does voiceovers with and makes “reality drama” for his sister lmfao

Steve: Has a black cat he named Diesel. Diesel may actually be meaner than Dally’s cat and the only one it’s nice to is Sodapop. Even Steve has his fair share of scars from that cat.

The Shepards also have a parrot that says the most heinous things in company. Its name is Pajarito but that bird has heard some things

what kind of dogs that I think each batfam member would have:

Alfred: prefers cats

Bruce: Bloodhound, mostly to track his kids and cases. The dog is very well trained and bruce can be quoted saying that the dog is the favorite child

Dick: any dog with disabilities or a pit bull, if the two overlap that dog is coming home with him immediately.

Jason: Mutt. Doesn’t know any ethical breeders and wants a dog that’s like him. traumatized, scarred and doing their best.

Cass: Poodle. Grooms it herself and has damian use animal safe dye to give the dog a cutie mark. the dog dances with her and helps her during panic attacks

Tim: Chihuahua. Finds them so interesting because of their high prey drive and intelligence. has taught the dog to find and destroy listening devices.

Duke: Any shepherd, probably an aussie. Loves to skateboard with their dog and has taught them to bark and attack on command. Uses this only when they’re alone at night because Gotham isn’t safe for anyone, even a vigilante.

Damian: Loves all dogs that’s have ever existed on te planet earth but his dream dog is a Cane Corso or a Tibetan Shepard
