Playtest draft 0.4 of Space Gerbils is up. I wasn't going to cut it here, but then I realised that I'd re-written the same page three times in as many days, which is usually a pretty good sign that I need to pump the brakes and talk to other people about it!

Nearly every part of every chapter has undergone substantial rewrites, so a complete changelog may take some time to prepare, but the highlights include:

Updated character creation, including nearly twice as many mech suit upgrades, and support for random space gerbil proficiencies; also, you now have to draw a picture of your space gerbil

Cleanup of protocol scopes and phase cycle workflow, including the removal of mandatory Threat Clocks and drastically simplified scene-ending triggers

Stress and conditions persisting across scenes deprecated in favour of new mechanics for handling long-term damage

Split downtime and away missions into two separate rules modules

Reorganised supplementary playsheets, and created form-fillable interactive versions where applicable (assuming your PDF reader software supports that kind of thing)

Additional print-and-play minifigs and interior illustrations by @artkaninchenbau (including the one up top!); minifigs now include lineart-only versions in case you want to colour them yourself

New mech suit schematics by @pencilbrony

what steps do you go through to draw in your current style? do you have any pointers about it? its absolutely one of my favorites

i'm not sure if i think of my process in steps. in my head, i'm just straightforwardly drawing the shapes the characters are made of at angles that look right and building on that... luckily, i stream when i draw every day, so i have a ton of videos of myself drawing. example:

i haven't bothered to upload a lot of the modern streams to youtube because my video editor can't handle editing 4-8 hour files even if i'm speeding them up and technically making them shorter because of the way video editors interact with files, and the freeware i use isn't able to make proxy files. the act of downloading and editing and combing through all the footage is a ton of time and memory space and it's just not what people are usually looking for from me, so it's not where i wanna put my time.

but that's neither here nor there. what i mean to say is these vods are really long. so you don't want to rawdog those. but you can just download a video speed controller extension to your browser and it's extremely easy to cruise through the backlog of vods at ~15x speed.

i've gone ahead and highlighted some of the recent videos to separate the chaff from the wheat. i tend to take long breaks to eat or walk my dog so there are big periods of Nothing Happening. i'll try to skim some more and do the same. unfortunately, i don't have any good videos of me coloring, since twitch deletes vods after like a month, and i've just been focusing on sketching.

but yeah, in general, it really depends on how good i'm feeling on a given day -- sometimes i will sketch multiple times for just one panel and sometimes i won't sketch at all. i use paint tool sai 2 and a pixel brush usually 2 pixels wide with no pen pressure. for comics, i have 1 layer for the panel borders, 1 layer for the sketch, 1 layer for the lines, 1 layer for the colors, 1 layer for the text, and 1 layer speech bubbles. sometimes there are special effects that overlap borders and need their own special layers. when i start sketching a new panel, i will usually put it on its own new layer, and sometimes for multiple characters i will put them on another new layer at a different opacity. this is mostly to move them around without constant cleanup. once i've gotten a sketch pretty finished, i merge all of the layers into the sketch layer. the line layer is usually just the sketch layer cleaned up and paint bucket tooled black. but basically, the vast majority of my time working on art is spent trying to fix small things like tangents, fitting speech bubbles into panels, thinking about how to lay out a page, checking continuity interaction with other pages, that kind of stuff. the complex technical parts of the process are to save time on those in ways i can without compromising quality. the other portion of working on the art is like "step 1: draw head circle (or jessie head diamond). step 2: draw the rest of the owl." i don't know if this was helpful at all y_y if you want more pointers i might be able to offer clarity on more specific questions!

aries: relatively speaking it's a quieter week than it has been in some time, but it's not quite actually calm. hiccups and developments occur for you especially around relationships and perhaps some secrets coming to light.

taurus: it's true and worth remembering that venus retrograde coming to an end can shake things up for you. but with that said there's a lot of solid, sweet, and supportive energy coming your way this week too. be flexible and not brittle.

gemini: a quite agreeable full moon this week brings probably good, fun things to fruition. your reptuation may be on the line in some way though, so don't be too wild about it.

cancerians: this week's full moon is intensely symbolic for you, in the sense that it's bringing you echoes and rhymes and omens. while some of it is rather tense, it's not altogether unpleasant. ending some retrogrades doesn't hurt either, although it contributes to some strangeness!

Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy July 11th Update, Wolfmania, Our Biggest Update Yet!

This update was delayed by about one week, but I think everyone will find that this was well worth it, as this has been our most significant update ever to the rulebook and general content of Eureka. Where do I even begin?

Maybe I’ll start with the best part. For a limited time, this update is FREE! You can grab a PDF from the A.N.I.M. TTRPG Book Club Discord server from now (July 11th 2024) until the next book club round starts! (Which will probably be about a month.)

Here’s just a few of the highlights for this update, you’ll find the full changelog below.

Major cleanup and copy-editing is underway again finally, and we managed to eliminate 42 pages of unnecessary blank space and extraneous text, as well as rewording and reorganizing many rules sections to make them clearer and easier to read. You now only have to read 20 pages before the first mention of how to roll dice, rather than 70.

Ten new character traits.

A PC’s Wealth stat now has a much greater effect on them in more areas of gameplay.

A ton of new art assets.

A bunch of massive improvements to combat that make it flow smoother with fewer interruptions, some of these improvements will be discussed in detail in their own post.

Repurposed Chapter 7 into being a chapter dedicated to GMing and homebrew.

Huge cleanups to the supernatural chapter.

Some changes to monsters overall to make them more modular and less restrictive in character creation.

Two new playable “supernatural” “creatures.”

Two new mage traits as well. (Which also double as two new spells for the witch)

The weaknesses of a vampire are now a bit more subjective and modular. For instance, in character creation you can trade off a greater sensitivity to garlic for a more potent sense of smell, or a lesser sensitivity to garlic for a weaker sense of smell. Vampires are now also explicitly thematically tied to religion, religious trauma, and religious horror.

Wolfmania! The wolfman monster now has different transformation options during character creation. You now choose your wolfman PC’s partial wolf transformation and full wolf transformation, with four options for each. There are some major narrative trade-offs for different combinations but I’ll let you figure that out for yourself.

Then, there is "The Eye of Neptune." "The Eye of Neptune" is a Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy adventure module that has languished in an unfinished state for like six months, but we finally got it like 99% complete. The only thing missing are the maps and the artwork, which it is fully playable without.

Man has built a city of steel and black blood atop the endless abyss. It is a beating heart bound together with labyrinthian pipe veins. Hundreds of miles away from civilization, it stands in the midst of the Gulf of Mexico with naught but empty horizons around it. Within is a vast structure of winding halls, grinding machinery, and thousands upon thousands of small parts working to achieve a grand design. It is the Offshore Oil Rig Neptune, and it was once run by 200 workers. Now, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has fallen to more or less a dozen. These last vestiges of life in the rig spread themselves thin and work their hands to the bone to keep the massive beast running. In the midst of this overwhelming isolation, two members of the already shorthanded crew are unaccounted for, Seth Barlowe and Lukas Ward. The installation manager, Noah, has convened a meeting to try to find out what happened to him. With the crew already severely shorthanded and tensions running high, a mysterious disappearance is the last thing anyone needs.

Thank fuck Rhys had a cleanup crew. Az did not enjoy digging graves or starting fires. He and Cass cleaned themselves up, Cass making the necessary calls, and then they strode out of the empty warehouse where they had the man captured.

A familiar numbness settled over Az as they slid into Cass’s car and drove away. He needed the kills, but he didn’t enjoy them. He didn’t like that he was a monster just as much as Beron was. He might stand for something better, but he was no better at the core. He had just as much blood on his hands. 

“Alright, man?” Cass asked him as they drove along a lightless state road. 

Az just grunted noncommittally, looking out the window at the passing trees. It was the end of winter and snow was melting, turning into a slushy brown mess on the sides of the road when the car’s headlights highlighted them. 

The wedding was occurring in one week. One fucking week and Elain would be walking down the aisle towards Eris fucking Vanserra. If Az wasn’t spiraling before, he fucking was now. He had gone to the meetings. He had texted Mor and Cass so they would know he was alive. He had done the interrogating. But he was still barely there. Just a blur on the surface of the earth. 

“You need anything?” Cass asked from beside him. Az bit back a sigh. He knew his brother was just trying to show him he cared. To help. But the only thing he needed was stuck in a mansion full of monsters a hundred miles away. 

“No,” he answered finally, not looking away from the window. 

“Alright,” Cass answered. He tapped his fingers against the steering wheel as if he wanted to say more. Az just sat in stony silence. If Cass wanted to talk, he would talk. Nothing had ever stopped him before. 

“Do you think we're going to pull this off?” He finally asked with forced nonchalance. 

Az finally slid his eyes to his brother. “That's the only fucking option.”

Since I had an hours-long fight with the colour green the other day, when I sat down with my pencils this time, I had a serious craving for monochrome. And shading for hours and hours and hours.

It's also that I've just started to figure out how to draw kisses decently realistically and am thrilled at the chance to make it everybody's problem. (Don't come at me with "decently!???!?!" I know I'm a perfectionist we've been through this)

And since I have an actual proper fucking scanner now (sshh I've been getting my art into the shiny rectangle by taking photos of it and I know that's ridiculous) I can just. SCAN THE THING. Like that. And it's. Good?? Just look at this luxury:

It's right there. Hardly any cleanup needed. Just a little contrast/brightness shifting and fixing some weak highlights and boom. Art

And the resolution on this fucker. I'm sure there are miles better scanners out there but it certainly is a feeling to have your A4 drawing in front of you at a level of detail suitable for poster size.

Gale x Tav/Durge on their Period

Yo, I started bleeding this weekend and so now, of course, I have to get these hcs out into the world for how Gale would react to his Tav/Durge being on their period (some slightly NSFW ones further down, highlighted in red, MDNI):

-One hundred thousand infinity percent would use magic to warm his hands, then hold them from behind and gently rub their belly. Would also probably give little kisses and nuzzles to their shoulders and neck <3

-Would cook anything they wanted and insist that they need to eat SOMETHING even if their appetite is meh due to cramps, etc. "At least some broth, my love. It will warm you up." He'd even cook vegetables for them. "I read that cooked vegetables are preferable to raw vegetables during this time, as they're easier on the stomach."

-On days he had to leave them to teach at Blackstaff, he would assign Tara as a belly warmer (probably bribe her with some beholder jerky) which she would initially act averse to, but she secretly loves having a lap to curl up in in Gale's absence, and she'd spend the day purring attentively and dozing with Tav/Durge until Gale returned (almost definitely with a little gift such as chocolates or a new book to indulge them with)

-Would buy ALL the bath salts/teas/herbs and soaps and lotions and prepare the most luxurious bath for his love, catered to their scent preferences (and of course he would join and wash their back if they so desired)

-Would massage their lower back, once again with magically heated hands and their favorite scented oils, before bed and upon waking up in the morning.

-If they were feeling emotional he would prepare some comforting tea and wrap the both of them in the coziest blanket he could find, peppering them with soft kisses and words of love and encouragement. "Whatever you need - to cry, to laugh, to sit in silence - I will be right here with you."

-He would actively ask how they were and check in with them, never shying away from hearing details of their experience and, in fact, using every period as a learning opportunity to better understand his partner and the nuances of their time-of-the-month - because it definitely is different for everyone.

-If they were feeling particularly sensitive/their hormones were acting up (ie if they were feeling horny af lol), he would GLADLY indulge them in whatever intimacy they desired: soft and sensual, rough and needy, quick and efficient, slow and prolonged, magic or no magic, bed sex, bath sex, desk sex, top or bottom and anyway imaginable. He is DOWN for it. Knowing that pleasure eases the pain adds to his already insatiable desire to please his partner. Tav/Durge is the priority. And he will make sure they are not only relieved but COMPLETELY satisfied.

-Would take aftercare seriously making sure to handle all the cleanup himself and helping Tav/Durge get comfortable however they needed (a bath/wash, a fresh, comfy change of clothes, a post-sex snack, a massage, etc.)

-∞/10 would eat his partner out on their period. No question. No hesitation. That man would FEAST.

thought i’d make a post showing/teaching my animation process for my most recent finished project!!! animation is really fun, it’s my absolute favorite form of art in the world and i love sharing how i approach it! without further ado, let’s get into it!

1. roughs

the goal here is to establish the big things in the animation. what are the main movements? what is the timing? what’s the general layout of the space the animation is occurring in? in my roughs, i like to use multiple colors to keep things separate and clear. you should also not be focusing on the details either!!! you are trying to get the most basic, fundamental forms down and moving before adding ANY detail. trust me, no artist on earth can crank out a finished animation without first taking this messy, less-than-pretty step.

2. tie downs

at this point, once the movement is down, you can start adding more details and clarifying things. in the tie down stage, you’re refining things— medium details, faces, character clothing, etc. you’re not trying to make it super clean. THIS IS SO IMPORTANT DO NOT TRY TO MAKE A CLEAN ANIMATION STRAIGHT OFF OF THE ROUGHS YOU WILL MAKE MISTAKES THAT ARE INSANELY ANNOYING TO FIX THAT LATE IN THE PROCESS!!! worry about perfect cleanliness in the next step!

3. final lines/cleanup

NOW i start worrying about how clean i want it to be. this stage sucks i am not going to lie. it is tedious and slow and agonizing because every single line has to move in a way that makes sense. DO NOT JUST INK OVER THE TIE DOWNS. if you do that it will look terrible and wobbly. you have to make sure everything is on model, that forms and lines move in a way that makes sense, and that there is no jitter or “sticking” (happens when lines are drawn over lines from the previous frame, which makes the line appear to “stick” in place). additionally, you’ll notice the red lines— these are color separation lines that will not be visible in the final animation. i use these for sappha’s stripes and hair highlights, as well as her two-tone irises. while not visible here, there is also a separate animation layer for final shadows.

4. coloring

and then comes color!! I do my cleanup and coloring in clip studio paint. If you’ve done everything correctly and there’s no gaps between lines, CSP’s fill tool will allow you to pretty quickly and easily fill your cleaned up animation. for this animation, i also threw together a shitty messy background in about 20 minutes and then gaussian blurred it (im not good at painting lol).

5. compositing

once the coloring is done, i move into my fully legal copy of After Effects, and begin compositing. this entails taking the animation elements (cels, backgrounds, etc) and combining them, color grading them, and adding effects like blurs, gradients, and light bleed. your two most important effects in AE are fast box blur and gradient ramp— honestly, you don’t need much more than those two to make a well-composited animation (besides some color stuff like gamma/pedestal/gain). once that’s done, i export it as an MP4 and a PNG sequence, import the sequence into CSP or Toonsquid (my favorite animation app for the ipad), and then use that to export a gif of my final animation!

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against chemical giants 3M and DuPont over PFAS, commonly known as "forever chemicals," accusing them of knowingly producing and marketing toxic substances while misleading the public about their safety.

The lawsuit points to scientific evidence linking PFAS to serious health risks, including cancer, liver damage and reproductive issues. PFAS have contaminated water, soil and air, posing a significant threat to public health due to their persistence in the environment.

Paxton's complaint seeks damages for cleanup, medical monitoring for affected communities and penalties for alleged violations of state consumer protection laws. The lawsuit emphasizes the need for accountability and immediate action to address PFAS contamination.

3M and DuPont have defended their practices, claiming compliance with regulations and efforts to reduce PFAS use. However, the lawsuit could set a precedent for future litigation against PFAS manufacturers and prompt other states to follow Texas's lead.

Although the lawsuit is a significant step forward, it highlights the need for stronger federal regulations to address PFAS contamination comprehensively and coordinate a nationwide response to the issue.

>Galaia Dev describes it as TUNIC x Enter the Gungeon but it's not really. Gameplay reminded more of Geometry Wars if anything. Was kinda fun but don't think I'll get this.

>BRUTAL JOHN Been seeing this around on twitter and avoided it due to it seeming bland. And I was right!

>Kitsune Tails SMB3 with a traditional japanese aesthetic. Solid and the characters are cute.

>Sparedevil A 'shooter' where you're in a bowling arena and need to knock down as many pins as possible. Couldn't really get the hang of this.

>I Am Your Beast SUPERHOT / Hotline Miami fans will want to check this one. I liked it but the story is presented pretty obnoxiously.

>Bloodless Beat 'em up where you play as an old samurai who doesn't use a sword (anymore). Gameplay takes a bit of getting used to but it's fun and the story's intriguing.

>Poke ALL Toads Puzzle game structured like Baba is You with really good and expressive art. Liked this one a lot.

>Caravan SandWitch One of those slow exploration-focused games like Sable. Liked the aesthetic and music but dialogue was a bit long-winded.

>B.C. Piezophile Control a weighty mech looking for a lost ship or something like that, the encyclopedia (yes, there's an encyclopedia) is written pretty esoterically so it's hard to figure some things out. Requires patience but got my eyes on the full release.

>Old School Rally PS1 styled racing game, takes a bit of getting used to the feel of the car, PROTIP: it's better to pump the brakes instead of holding them.

>Goblin Cleanup Viscera Cleanup Detail except you're a sexy goblin maid cleaning up a dungeon. Was pretty fun, especially online.

>Scarmonde Final Fantasy 1 but it's a dungeon crawler. Not my sort of game but if you're into this genre you'd probably like this.

Christmas in the suitcase! Who's doing what to celebrate?

Vertin and her squad (+ a couple helpful arcanists) decorate the suitcase, decorations here and there, most of the time it's something nice or celebratory, but then you see that Balloon Party made some grotesque balloons, Jessica placed some... Unusual decorations (oftentimes critter bones in a tree shape) and Tuesday... Well she bought Christmas stuff! ...at the Halloween store.

Speaking of Tuesday, she helps the kids decorate the tree. All find her weird decorations to be unique, so they hang around her during decorations and place their own little bloody handprints on the decorations.

Pain it is for Satsuki, Sonetto and the cleanup team to leave these spotless...

Ms Bunny Bunny enters a "Baking mode" during this. She takes her time to prepare everything for Christmas dinner and makes desserts so they can enjoy after decorating. She doesn't need much help, she can do it herself so she's often seen alone. It's "me time"

Though she appreciates it if some foreign arcanist decides to bring a part of their culture to the kitchen.

The rocking pirate and her co captain Mr APPLe are the ones that put on the mood, a.k.a they steal the radio and place music. Even a lazy captain can do something to lighten the mood.

Hard to tell what the others do, some don't participate much, others only come out during special celebrations. People like Zima, Isolde, Click and Semmelweis are those that come out during special occasions.

Now on some specific arcanists

Cristallo loves this month a lot. The adults allow her to go out and decorate, she can eat sweets (as long as they are prepared by Sotheby) and play with others. Tuesday is especially soft to her, like another Barbara, so she allows her to place more decorations and bloody handprints. She's always excited for every part of the holiday, mostly because she never got to enjoy it before

Isolde spends most of her time with her friends, J and Spathodea drag her around to show her their own decorations and have her try the dishes from their hometown. It's mostly just her burn friends showing her things, but it's the highlight of her day. She even prepares some jewelry for them as a Christmas gift!

Jessica adores the colors, she's been seen trying to eat the lights before Blonney dragged her away. She's dangerous to be left with bright yellow lights like the ones in the tree, she thinks these are tooth faeries... Either way, she eats the most and runs around with the rest, carrying decorations on her back (Yes, she participates in Tuesday's grotesque Christmas). She's never participated in this, so everything is new to her.

Lorelei is fond of the music, but she's one of the few that doesn't participate much. She loves to help them decorate, but she also requires some time for herself. She does decorate her room beautifully tho, the envy of Eternity.
