Mother’s Day Movie Recommendation: No Blood Relation

Happy Mother’s Day! If you’re in the mood to celebrate the occasion with a movie screening, allow me to suggest Mikio Naruse’s No Blood Relation, a bittersweet melodrama that thoroughly explores the beautiful, painful complexities of motherhood.

When a famous Hollywood actress returns to her native Japan in order to reunite with the daughter that she abandoned six years ago, she quickly discovers that the girl is absolutely inseparable from her ex-husband’s borderline angelic second wife; as bitterness and resentment drive her to increasingly drastic measures in her effort to win the child’s affection through sheer brute force, she must confront the difficult truth that it takes more than simply sharing blood to forge a familial bond.

Featuring a surprisingly nuanced conflict (especially for a 1932 production) that treats every character—antagonists included—with an equal degree of sympathy and dignity, No Blood Relation is essential viewing. The fact that it’s a silent film makes it a bit of an acquired taste, of course… but I believe that its compelling central themes (as well as Naruse’s sublime direction, which utilizes dynamic camerawork to elegantly convey the turbulent emotions underlying the narrative) lend it universal appeal.

Bruce pale: Are you about to say what I think you're about to say?

Dick: Omg, there are more of them.

Jason: Of course you have a bunch of kids you never bothered to raise, dead beat.

Tim: great I'll have even more demons to defend myself against

Damian: I shall prepare for a blood battle post haste.

Alfred: My son will be arriving tomarrow

Batfam: *Dead Silence*

Bruce: I beg your finest pardon?

Alfred: Yes, it seems I am the father of one Wes Weston. He and his group of friends will be in Gotham tomorrow for a college tour, and I will be meeting him for the first time. We have spoken many times over the phone.

Bruce: This is somehow worse

Yoshiko Okada in No Blood Relation (Mikio Naruse, 1932) Cast: Yoshiko Okada, Yukiko Tsukuba, Toshiko Kojima, Shin'yo Nara, Fumiko Katsuragi, Joji Oka, Ichiro Yuki, Shozaburo Abe, Tomio Aoki. Screenplay: Kogo Noda, based on a novel by Shunyo Yanagawa. Cinematography: Eijiro Fujita, Suketaro Inokai, Masao Saito.  Before it settles down to become an intense domestic drama, No Blood Relation begins with a sequence of comic action: Gen (Shozaburo Abe), a goofy-looking purse-snatcher, is being chased through the streets until he collides with a man who holds him until the crowd catches up. Forced to strip, Gen reveals that he doesn't have the purse on him, and the cops send him away with his pants falling down around his ankles. But the man who caught him is actually an accomplice, Keiji (Ichiro Yuki), who hid the purse on himself when they collided. Keiji is the brother of a big Hollywood movie star, Tamae (Yoshiko Okada), who is returning that day to Japan for the first time in years, and Keiji and Gen see their chance for the big time as flunkies for Tamae. Her reason for returning home is to reclaim her daughter, Shigeko (Toshiko Kojima), whom she abandoned shortly after her birth. Her husband, Shunsaku (Shin'yo Nara), remarried, and his new wife, Masako (Yukiko Tsukuba), has proved to be a devoted mother to the little girl. Unfortunately, Shunsaku's business is about to go under, owing to his bad management and some shady deals that get him sent to prison. His mother, Kishiyo (Fumiko Katsuragi), is bitter about not only his business failure but also because this means they'll have to move out of their big house into a poor neighborhood. So when Tamae comes in search of her child, Kishiyo takes her side against Masako, leading to an intense battle between the birth mother and the one who is ... well, that's the point of the title. Masako fortunately has a defender, Masaya Kusakabe, whose relationship to the family is enigmatic: He's just returned from Manchuria, and since he's played by the handsome Joji Oka -- a sharp contrast to the plain and dour Shunsaku -- we begin to suspect that there's more to his relationship with Masako than meets the eye, though that part of the plot never pans out. No Blood Relation is a very effective tearjerker, with Naruse's characteristically hyperactive camera panning and dollying and zooming in to provide emphasis at key moments, and it shows Naruse's mastery of silent filmmaking, carrying the story without an overabundance of intertitles.

It only stops when one night in the middle of patrol. Batman is in full Dark Knight mode (possibly in the middle of threatening someone) and descends from the ceiling into the middle of a warehouse drug deal, dark cape billowing out behind him-

She immediately realizes what she said and frantically apologizes but it’s too late.

Bruce just- Blue Screens. Completely stunned into silence

Dick -who was unfortunate enough to be the one teamed up with Batman tonight- is fighting for his life to choke back his laughter

Jason doesn’t even try to stop his and has collapsed to his knees from lack of air from how hard he’s laughing. Cass try’s half heartedly patting his back to help to no avail

The criminals are terrified into surrender from The Red Hood just laughing hysterically at seemingly nothing while Batman just Stands There

Damian ends up being the only one still functioning enough to continue arresting everyone, though he is privately amused and strangely proud

Tim and Barbara have saved both the com recordings and cowl footage to at least three different servers and sent it to absolutely everyone before Batman even recovers

Duke finds out second hand the next morning and is furious he missed the chance to see it in person. He declares he is moving to the nightshift so it doesn’t happen again. (He is all talk and goes to bed by 9 pm)

Bruce bans the phrase for life and promises swift and server punishment to anyone who dares to use it again

They have never suspected Timmy Turner of anything! Despite often expressing regret or disappointment, they still very much love their son! And all the benefits he brings them!!

The Turners are a well established family in the neighborhood. It wouldn't bode them well to go around casting doubt against their own son. It'd affect their reputation terribly!
