I just submitted my final year thesis for tax law so I have been away for good reason, and now it is exam season so I am trying to study— emphasis on trying

BUT some good news is that now that I have my thesis out of the way, I can write more!!!

I have two new drabbles in the drafts, one is for @/painsandconfusions the whumpers’ soiree event!!! Which I am excited to finally publish, it needs some editing but hopefully it will be up by the end of the week!

"justice league doesn't know batman has kids" and by some freak incident, they end up meeting them all at once, after never having one single sneaking suspicion of batman being a family guy.

you've got every batkid + justice league member in the same room, and bruce tries for a total of 6 seconds to diffuse the situation before giving up.

there's bats left right and centre making completely false claims about how their family came to be, just to stir shit. also purposely trying to ruin batman's 'stoic and mean' reputation as best as they can.

jason and steph are telling everyone that they're all bio kids, and bruce does try and correct that one (some of those kids don't even belong to him in a non-bio way!!) but not before tim pipes up and goes 'well actually it depends what you count as biological, he grew me in a lab'.

dick's taking full advantage of the JL's perception of batman being oh so impressionable in the moment, and is telling stories of his childhood + batman raising his younger siblings, making him out to be the softest guy to ever exist (completely on purpose). cass is nodding along next to him, and making sure whenever she adds a comment that she uses the word 'dad' instead of batman just for the extra domestic flare.

babs and jason are explaining how they all consider themselves bats, in a way that would make anyone believe that they're in a cult. bruce is standing amidst it all, an immovable object, with dick's arm on his shoulder, and damian huddled into his side (ALL for dramatic flare. they need the JL to know that he's. just a guy with kids).

the way garak looks at bashir as he puts all the clues together at the end of cardassians. the sheer 'look at that little twink go (affectionate, sexual overtones)' energy he manages to convey in the background there as bashir passionately does the presentation of their group project that garak did 80% of the actual work on. immaculate

The redhead was lying on the sofa and did not look up from the documents with which he was helping the blonde

Alberu rised his head from his own documents, confused by the question without context.

"What?"

"Doesn’t matter what you call him, he won’t come anyway."

Cale grins when Alberu chokes and keep reading the documents calmly.

Thinking about a time early on well Cass is still struggling to learn how to speak, where maybe she understands most of what people say to her, but she still can't make her voice form the words the way it should, and someone snaps at her about it. Maybe Barbara is frustrated with how long it's taking, or she can see the disappointment in Bruce's expression, or Tim makes a misguided joke. And she doesn't say anything, both because she can't and because she doesn't know what to say even if she could, she just retreats to her room.

Dick is the one to find her. He knocks before he enters, but he doesn't wait for an answer. He asks if it's alright for him to come in, but only after the door is already opened so she can simply nod. He sits on the bed with her, and for a long moment he doesn't say anything. When he does it's softer than Cass has ever heard from him. Maybe from anyone. "You know, Bruce and Babs, they want what's best for you, and to them that obviously means you need to learn how to speak so you can interact with people. But speaking isn't the only way to talk."

Cass frowns, but that just makes Dick smile a little. "I had a friend once who couldn't speak. His vocal cords had been cut when he was a kid, so he used sign langue to communicate."

And when Cass doesn't protest Dick goes on. He tells her about Joe, about the boy who was raised by assassins but had the heart of an artist. Who seemed to know what everyone around him was feeling and exactly how to help without having to be told. How even though the entire team learned sign langue so he could talk to them, most of the time Joe preferred to just sit and listen anyway, how he'd only interject when he had something important to say. It wasn't because he was mute, it was just the way Joe was, and that was okay. They enjoyed just having him there with them, a friendly presence and a kind smile. He stops just short of telling her how Joey died.

Dick signs every word he says as he talks, and Cass watches. Not just the signs, but Dick as well, the way he talks about his friend. The small smile despite the sadness in his eyes. Even the signs themselves seem to be caring, they're precise, but not automatic. Dick is thinking about every single one, remembering Joey with each movement.

When he's done Cass smiles in return and nods, accepting the unspoken offer.

Sign langue is still hard, it's still learning a new langue and her brain isn't prepared for that, but at least her hands don't fight her the way her mouth does. She can mimic the signs perfectly, it's just about remembering them and what they mean. Luckily Dick is always more than happy to show her.

A while ago @nishihii​​ asked me about Gehrman and the Orphan parallels so I’m gonna talk about that for a minute.

So, when the cutscene before the Orphan fight plays, we hear Gehrman sobbing. The Orphan and Gehrman both use scythe-like weapons and act as the finale (bar Moon Presence) of the game as a whole. Gehrman is said to be at peace when the Orphan is killed the same way the Doll is when we defeat Maria. But why is this? What is the juicy symbolism? The reason is pretty open-ended but I have some ideas. 

The Orphan is a representation of Gehrman in The Hunter’s Nightmare. We can assume, like the other Hunters, Gehrman was cursed by Kos to go to the Nightmare upon his death. If he is being held in the Dream, however, preventing that from happening. It could be that part of Gehrman resides in the Nightmare within the Orphan- the same way that Maria and the Doll aren’t the same but are connected through Great One shenanigans.

The Nightmare is founded on guilt- particularly surrounding Hunter’s actions in the Fishing Hamlet. It makes a lot of thematic sense to have Gehrman’s characteristics seep into the representation of the atrocity his organisation caused. 

Gehrman is the surrogate child of Flora- mirroring the Orphan as Kos’ child. Take a child from a Great One; become the child of a Great One.

Gehrman and the Orphan are both isolated and grieving. They are fueled by their anguish. For Gehrman it results far more from his own actions and his participation in the cycle -The Orphan is just a baby fr- but I believe there’s still a connection to be made with their motivations.

There are probably more reasons so feel free to tack onto this if you want! I’ve just been mulling this over for a while and I think it’s an interesting little detail. You can’t escape your crimes against the Gods even when taken under their wing.
