"Because I’m your boyfriend!" James said incredulously. 

"So that makes you special?" Regulus continued to look at him blankly, eyes hovering just above his book. 

James’ jaw dropped, eyes bulging. Shock before upset. Except he never got to upset because Barty of all people came up from behind and smacked Regulus’ on the back of the head. 

"What the hell was that for?" Regulus snarled. 

Barty flopped himself on the couch, falling easily into Evan’s opens arms and laying his head in Evan’s lap. “You can’t leave me for this sun cloud and then steal his spirit Black,” Barty smirked. 

The room went completely silent. Everyone staring at Barty, including Evan but not in the way that Barty wanted Evan to stare at him. Well okay, he wanted and would accept any look, glance, just-so-happened-peripheral catch of the eye from Evan, but this was not about Barty. 

Barty propped himself up on his elbows, looking around the room. “What?” he said sharply. 

“Did you just defend James?” Remus asked, always the bravest of them all when it came to Evan and Barty, mostly because they wanted Lupin, and Remus liked feeling like he was a god. 

“What? No!” Barty said quickly. 

Evan pulled Barty back down to his lap. “You kind of did...” Evan said tentatively. The room falling back into silence, everyone waiting for Barty to argue. 

But then Regulus laughed. 

He laughed and laughed, actually couldn’t stop one he started. And everyone watched him. His laughter was so contagious that eventually everyone was laughing along with him, except Barty was pouting slightly annoyed. 

James who had been standing this entire time, watching everyone go back and forth about Barty “protecting his light,” and daring to try and claim Regulus left Barty for James. 

James finally decided to cross the room to Regulus, crouching in front of him as Regulus’ laugh faded. There wasn’t any sound that warmed James’ bones more than Regulus’ laughter. Regulus tried to contain himself as James snaked his hands up his thighs and around Regulus’ waist. 

“Jamesssss” Regulus attempted at warning, but his laughter had loosened his grip on his emotional mask and it came out a whine. 

“Regulus,” James said back, tilting his head. He hadn’t forgotten how this conversation had started. 

“Don’t make me,” Regulus continued to pout. James just looked at him imploringly. 

“Fine, I will go to the ball with you,” Regulus conceded. 

“And?” James raised an eyebrow. 

“And its because you are my boyfriend,” Regulus huffed. 

“And?” Everyone else said in unison. 

“And you are special,” Regulus rolled his eyes, but he couldn’t keep his lips from turning up when James smiled brightly at him, finally standing and kissing Regulus’ head.

i like to think—in the beginning, hedwig would only squint at him suspiciously, unsure of this strange smelly man near her boy. but it’s when she realises how devoted s is to harry that she softens. the first time she lets sirius pet her feather w/o nipping at him was properly celebrated. (remus watched on enviously bc hedwig literally always, without fail, divebombs him when he’s near)

“Harry James.” Remus pinched the bridge of his nose. “What are you doing?”

“Lookin’ for skel’tons,” Harry said cheerfully, throwing a trowelful of mud over his shoulder and nearly hitting Remus in the knees with it. 

“Skeletons?” Remus repeated, momentarily distracted from the sight of his mud-covered child by the nonsensical answer. 

“Yeah!” Harry said. “Skel’tons under the dirt! I wanna find some!” 

Remus held back a sigh. This one was on him--he probably shouldn’t have taken the boys with him to the cemetery last week in his efforts to track down a pesky local ghoul. Harry had asked far too many questions about it afterward, which Remus had answered a bit too honestly. 

“You’re not going to find any skeletons in our backyard, sweetheart, and it’s almost dinnertime. Come on, we need to get you into the bath before Paddy sees you.” 

Harry pouted, but clambered out of the small mud-hole he had dug around himself and came trotting over to Remus. He grabbed one of Remus’s hands with his muddy one, and Remus stifled another sigh. 

“Pads!” he called out as he ushered Harry into the downstairs bathroom. “I’m--oh, hello.” 

Sirius was already kneeling by the tub, and he raised an eyebrow at them. “Go swimming in the mud, Harry?”

Remus huffed. “Your godson was trying to dig up skeletons.” 

Sirius snorted and went back to scrubbing Neville, who was covered in bright splotches of pink, green, and blue paint. “Yes, well, your godson got into the supply of magic-resistant paints.” 

“Have a good time, Nev?” Remus asked, and Neville nodded enthusiastically. 

“I painted the wall!” 

“Of course you did.” 

Remus stripped Harry out of his clothes and helped him into the bath, and then set about scrubbing him down. The faintly purple water soon turned brown, and Remus had to magically change the water every few minutes with a flick of his wand, until both boys were clean enough that the water remained clear. Satisfied that they were now in no danger of tracking mud or paint through the house, Sirius conjured up some toys for them to play with in the bath and Remus added some colorful bubbles. 

“Painted the wall, huh?” Remus asked, sitting back and watching the boys play. Sirius plopped down on the floor beside him. 

“It’s not half-bad, actually. I think we should leave it. Skeletons?”

“I…may have taken the boys to a cemetery last week. And explained what was under the headstones.” 

“So that’s why Neville’s had nightmares every night this week.” 

Remus grimaced. “Sort of crap at this, aren’t I?”

Harry had been living with them ever since that horrible Halloween night, but the attack on Frank and Alice was only a year and a half ago, and they were all still adjusting to being a family of four. Remus had no idea how to be a godfather, and Sirius made it look so easy with Harry. 

“Nah. Don’t say that, Rem.” Sirius knocked his knee against Remus’s. “Neville’s happy, isn’t he? That’s what counts.” 

“Paddy, look!” Harry cried. One of the toy boats was floating in the air a couple of inches from Harry’s outstretched fingers, and Sirius grinned and clapped his hands. Harry’s bouts of accidental magic were becoming less and less accidental these days--they were discovering, sometimes to their chagrin, that he actually had the ability to control his magic in small bursts. This one didn’t last for long, and the boat soon fell back into the water. 

“Excellent job, Hazza!” Sirius praised. “Now, what do you boys say to some dinner?”

They got the boys out of the tub, dried them off, and helped them dress in clean clothes. Harry immediately took off running for the kitchen, Sirius close behind him. Neville didn’t seem eager to follow, though, and Remus settled a hand on his head. 

“Aren’t you hungry?” he asked, and Neville shook his head. “Oh? What’s wrong, love?”

“Can’t do magic,” Neville mumbled, eyes downcast. Remus crouched in front of him, taking his godson’s small hands in his much larger ones and squeezing gently.

“There’s nothing wrong with that, you know,” he said. “It’s okay that you can’t do magic right now.” 

“Gran gets mad,” Neville muttered, and oh, Remus was going to have a little chat with Augusta the next time he dropped Neville off for Sunday tea. 

“Nev,” he said softly, “you are still very young. There is plenty of time for you to do magic. I didn’t start doing magic until I was eight, you know.” 

Neville looked at him. “Yeah?” 

“Yeah. And even if you never do magic, I’ll love you just the same.” Remus kissed his forehead and straightened. “Come on. I hear there’s treacle tart for dessert.” 

Neville visibly brightened at that, and he tucked his hand into Remus’s as they left the bathroom.

AN: This fic idea wouldn't leave me alone! It takes place after Order of the Phoenix and will contain Harry Potter and Star Wars spoilers. Basically, it's me writing another Sith AU. Updates will be unpredictable because I am doing some additional work. The image isn't mine. I found it on Google - credits to the original owners.

Warnings: mentions of death, violence, war, and betrayal. One day I'll write something that's just fluff - I promise.

"Do not tell her," Sirius ordered his godson.

"What? Why? Her name was on the prophecy!" Harry protested, staring at Sirius in shock. Still recovering from his near-death experience at the Ministry of Magic, Sirius clenched and unclenched his hands on his blanket.

"You can't tell (Name) because the last time the Jedi visited Earth - it took the oldest and noblest families to force them back to the stars. Didn't you ever wonder why the Sacred 28 are the most influential of the purebloods?"

"Her name was on the prophecy though." Harry argued, "She deserves to know!"

"And where would that lead?" Sirius questioned as he shifted in the bed with a wince that had guilt twisting at Harry's insides. "It's best that the prophecy remains with the others, undisturbed at the Ministry of Magic."

A lump built in Harry's throat, "It got smashed during the battle with the Death Eaters," he admitted, not meeting Sirius' eyes nor revealing to his godfather that he had actually thrown the prophecy in question at Bellatrix Lestrange to escape from the mad witch.

Sirius fell quiet immediately, "Did you see the other name on the prophecy?" He eventually croaked.

Harry thought for a moment before nodding, "Qui-Gon Jinn."

Sirius scoffed and rolled his eyes before muttering an expletive in French. Although Harry didn't understand French, he knew what Sirius had said wasn't good.

"Years ago, I overheard the Aurors who visited Azkaban panicking about the fact that Qui-Gon Jinn fell after his apprentice's betrayal." Sirius closed his eyes, "Merlin help us. I thought a Jedi returning to Earth was bad but a Sith would be even worse."

"Haz! Let's go we're going to be late!" James called from the door. Regulus was quickly packing some snacks for the car as James grabbed the "entertainment" bag.

"Does he really need all this?" James said to Regulus who met him in the doorway.

"Yes James he does. He's 5 years old and I'm not going to listen to him cry for 3 hours about being bored and the last time we did screens in the car he threw up."

James nodded, and kissed Regulus' cheek. "The right words are this is such a great idea and you are a wonderful parent who thinks of everything," James said trying too hard to save face.

"A bit rehearsed but the sentiment is right," Regulus teased with a smile.

"Harry let's go, or we will leave without you!" Regulus called up the stairs as he walked out the door with several of the bags.

Tiny steps were heard running down the stairs. "Nooo, Papa I want to see Teddy!"

"Alright then in the car please," James said as he followed Harry out of the house.

After they all settled in the car, Harry in his seat and James driving. Nearly as soon as they got on the highway, Regulus dozed off as usual. About an hour in, Harry whispered quietly to James after poking Regulus' head from behind.

"Dad, do you think uncle pads and uncle Moony are going to be happy to see us?"

"Of course they will be sweetheart, why do you ask?"

"Well last time uncle pads cried when he saw us" Harry said.

"Oh I see. I think uncle pads was sad because he missed us." James said.

"I wish we didn't live so far away so we could see them everyday and uncle pads wouldn't be sad anymore," Harry whispered.

"Me too son, me too. It's okay to be sad sometimes, Yeah?" James said.

"Yeah... I'm going to give him the biggest hug and and uncle Moony too!" Harry decided.

When they got there, Harry nearly jumped out of the car and ran right up the porch to where Sirius and Remus were waiting with Teddy.

Regulus held James back for a moment. "Do you need a hand?" James asked.

"Do you want to move back here?" Regulus asked quietly.

James cocked his head, then thought about it for a moment. "Sometimes yes, but Regulus I love our life." James explained.

"Well what if I wanted to move here too?" Regulus suggested.

"You never cease to surprise me love," James said as he kissed his forehead. "Let's talk about it some more later, okay?"

"I'd really like that," Regulus replied before heading up the path to his brother's home.

If I had a nickel for every time there was a piece of fantasy young adult content in which there was a background duo of queer adults who were together in high school and would do pranks together but had a dramatic misunderstanding that resulted in their breakup and then, like 15 years later they reunite during a magic war and are clearly still in love with each other but it has the vibe of a tragedy and also one of them can turn into some sort of monster I would have TWO nickels.
