when you need the job done

neighbor!ellie universe
summary: moving out alone for the first time might be scary—and awfully exhausting. you’re lucky you have a very handy lesbian as a neighbor.
word count: 6.8k

THE BOX you were carrying was way too heavy. You knew it the second you stubbornly yanked it out of the trunk, but by the time you realized how unwise that was, you were already halfway up the steps to your new apartment. The one that didn't have an elevator.
A bead of sweat ran down your temple. Your arms were shaking, the cardboard creaking ominously, and you could feel the edge of a textbook digging into your thigh through the bottom of the box.
You grunted softly as you stagger forward, muttering under your breath, "okay, stupid idea, officially noted."
That’s when you heard it. A door creaking open. You looked up, flustered, and caught sight of her. A young woman that was standing in the open doorway of the unit just across the hall. Faded gray hoodie, sweatpants that sat a little too low on her hips, and a tangle of auburn hair in a messy bun that looked like it gave up halfway. One hand gripped the door frame, the other clutching a half-eaten granola bar.
She blinked at you, shocked. You offered a small, sheepish smile. "Hi."
She blinked again. "Uh—hi."
There was a beat of silence. She kept staring at you, and you shifted your weight, struggling to hold the box and at the same time balance your pride. "I, uh… just moved in."
She nodded quickly. "Yeah, no—I figured. New face. And boxes. That’s… obvious. Sorry."
You bit back a laugh. "I promise I’m not usually this pathetic. Just… long drive. Too much stuff."
Ellie snapped out of it suddenly, like her brain had just rebooted. "Shit—wait. Let me help you with that."
Before you could protest, she’s stepping forward, quickly wiping her hand on her hoodie like she just remembered she’s eating, then gently taking the box from you like she’s worried you’ll shatter if she’s too rough. And she lifted it as if it didn't weight anything. God, you're not sure if it was just the exhaustion, but was the room suddenly hotter? Or was it just you?
"Oh my god," you exhaled in relief, letting your arms drop. "Thank you. You may have just saved my spine."
She grinned softly, cheeks a little pink. "No problem. I’m Ellie, by the way."
You gave her your name, and she repeated it quietly under her breath, like she wanted to make sure she didn’t forget. It was oddly endearing.
She followed you into your apartment and gently sat the box down by the window. "Wow. You’ve got, like… a lot of books."
You glanced around at the stack of boxes marked READING / PLEASE DON’T CRUSH, smiling a little. "Guilty. I had a system, but the system kinda died somewhere around hour five of unpacking."
Ellie nodded like she got it. "Want some help? I mean—only if you want. I don’t have anything going on. Just… reorganizing my guitar pedals and regretting life choices."
You raised an eyebrow. "Guitar pedals?"
She blushed faintly. "Yeah. Music nerd. Don’t judge."
"I’d never," you replied, already walking toward the nearest box. "If you’re serious about helping, I’ve got a bookshelf I was too scared to try assembling alone."
She perked up immediately. "I’m your girl."
An hour later, Ellie was sitting cross-legged on your living room floor, her hoodie sleeves pushed up—her arm tattoo on full display, as she studied the instruction manual with a look of pure concentration.
There was a screw between her lips and her hair was falling in her face, but she didn’t seem to notice. You were lying on the rug beside her, trying not to laugh. "You look like you’re defusing a bomb."
She spat out the screw with a grin. "This is Ikea. You never know." You laughed, and Ellie beamed at the sound. "Okay, hand me the... um. That… L-shaped—thingy."
"You mean the Allen wrench?"
"Right. That. Allen. Bastard of a wrench."
You passed it to her and watched as her hands worked with practiced ease, though she was still mumbling things like 'who designed this nightmare' under her breath. After a few minutes, the pieces started to come together.
You offered her a drink from your tiny fridge, and she takes it with a soft 'thanks,' sipping while scanning the partially-built shelf.
"You know," she said casually, "this place is nice. Good lighting. Kinda cozy already."
"Think I’ll like it here."
Ellie shrugged, maybe a little too fast. "Yeah, well. I mean. You’ve got a cool neighbor, so."
You laughed, leaning your head back against the wall. "I really do."
ELLIE WAS standing at your door, awkwardly shifting from one foot to the other, wiping her hands on her jeans even though she hadn’t touched anything in the past ten minutes. The bookshelf was done. The boxes were stacked a little neater. She helped more than she should have for someone who just met you, and now there’s a weird lull in the air like… okay, what happens now?
You stretched your arms overhead, groaning quietly as your back pops. "Okay, officially retiring from lifting furniture."
Ellie snorted. "You say that now. Wait until you realize you still have, like, six more boxes marked 'miscellaneous disaster'."
You groaned again, dramatically this time. "Those are tomorrow’s problems." Then, with a soft sigh, you glanced toward your hallway and say, "God, I still need to get a new bulb for the bedroom. I haven’t been able to see in there since I got here."
Ellie raises her brows. "No light at all?"
"None," you say. "And of course, I packed the lamps in the box that’s... still in my car. Which is currently blocked in by some delivery truck of doom."
There was a pause. You expected a laugh, maybe a 'good luck with that.' Instead, she played with two of her fingers awkwardly, and smiled at you. "I could take you?" she said.
You blinked. "What?"
"To the store," she shrugged, eyes darting away like she regrets offering. "I was just gonna run out and grab snacks or something anyway."
You tilted your head. "You were?"
Ellie turned red, but tried to play it cool. "Yeah. Definitely. Wasn’t just gonna, y’know, spiral alone in my apartment or anything."
You both knew that was a lie. But you laughed, and something in her posture relaxed. "Okay," you replied, smiling. "Yeah. Let’s go lightbulb hunting."
Ten minutes later, you’re both in Ellie’s dusty old truck—windows slightly cracked, and a faint smell of pine from a crooked air freshener hanging from the mirror. She was gripping the wheel like she’s trying not to white-knuckle it, sneaking occasional glances at you when she thinks you’re not looking. You’re pretty sure you caught every single one.
At the hardware store, the lightbulb section was far more overwhelming than it had any right to be. You stood in front of it together, baffled by the sheer number of wattage options.
"Why are there so many types?" you whispered.
Ellie whispered back, "capitalism."
Eventually, you grabbed the right one (after way too much debate about warm vs. cool lighting), and Ellie casually picked up a few things for herself. Chips. A soda. A pack of sour candy she pretended not to want until you caught her staring at it for a solid minute.
"You’re definitely a sour candy person," you said as she tosses it into the basket.
Ellie shrugged, cheeks pink. "You're saying that like it’s a bad thing."
You shook your head. "No, just… makes sense."
"Yeah?"
"Yep," you said softly, smiling. "It’s cute."
She froze. Didn’t say anything for five seconds. Then muttered a very quiet, 'Oh.' You pretended not to notice how red her ears go.
BACK AT YOUR apartment, it took about eight minutes to screw in the new bulb—and then you were both just… standing in your now-lit bedroom, staring at the glow like you’ve just witnessed a miracle.
"Let there be light," Ellie said reverently.
You laughed and flopped back onto your mattress dramatically. "I owe you my life."
She leaned against the doorway, hands in her hoodie pocket, watching you with the kind of soft smile she probably doesn’t even realize she’s wearing. "You don’t owe me anything."
You glanced at the clock. "You hungry?"
Ellie paused. "Me?"
"No, the bookshelf." You smirked. "Of course you, dummy. C’mon. I’m starving. And you did save my spine."
She tried to brush it off with a joke—'I do take payment in pepperoni'—but you could tell she was secretly thrilled.
Twenty-five minutes later, a pizza box was open between you on the living room floor, two paper plates balancing precariously on a stack of books. You’d strung up some fairy lights that Ellie offered to 'totally not judge you for owning,' and now the room is bathed in warm, flickering gold.
You were sitting cross-legged, a slice in hand. "God, I didn’t realize how hungry I was."
Ellie smiled behind her cup of soda. "You looked like you were gonna pass out when I showed up earlier."
"Honestly? Close."
There was a pause. She glanced at you, then down at her food, then back at you. "I’m glad you let me help," she says.
"Yeah?"
She nods, playing with a corner of the box. “I don’t… really do that. Talk to people, I mean. Not right away. But you’re… easy."
You rose an eyebrow, smirking. "Easy?"
"I mean—you’re easy to talk to,” she blurted. "Not like—not in a bad way. You just—shit. That sounded wrong."
You burst out laughing. "Relax. I know what you meant."
She groaned into her hands. "Kill me."
"Never," you laughed. There’s a lull after that. A comfortable one.
You leaned back on your hands, stretching your legs out toward her. "So what’s your story, Neighbor Ellie? Mysterious girl across the hall. Fixes furniture. Gives rides. Loves sour candy."
She gave you a look. "You clocked all that in one night?"
"I’m a fast learner."
She exhaled a laugh, rubbing the back of her neck. "Okay, well. I moved here a couple years ago. Work in a CD store. Play guitar in my free time. Live a thrilling life of talking to no one and watching horror movies until 2 AM."
"Wow," you deadpanned. "Truly a menace."
She smirked. "I contain multitudes."
You nudged her leg with your foot. "I think you’re cool."
Ellie went so quiet after that you worry you went too far. But then she said, soft: "I think you’re pretty cool too."
Neither of you moved for a second. The pizza was getting cold, the lights were flickering softly. She was staring at you like you hung the stars, and your heart’s doing something very inconvenient in your chest.
IT WASN’T HARD TO figure out where Ellie worked. Not like you stalked her or anything—she just... mentioned it. Casually. In passing. And it stuck with you, that offhand comment about shifts and sorting and 'old people complaining about the price of CDS like it’s 1985.'
And okay, maybe you were a little too curious. Maybe you had a free day and a really good memory. And maybe there weren’t that many record stores in town to begin with.
You checked out the first shop—a dusty little place with an impressive jazz section and a guy behind the counter who looked old enough to have invented jazz. No Ellie. The second one was sleek and modern, curated for aesthetic Instagram posts, with alphabetized playlists and diffused lighting. Also, no Ellie. But the third one… That’s where you saw her.
She was behind the counter, alone, hunched over a small stack of CDs, scribbling something onto tiny sticky notes with a black pen clutched between ink-smudged fingers. Her hair was tied up in a low bun, loose strands falling into her face as she worked. She was mouthing the words to whatever track was playing overhead—some soft, rock ballad you didn’t recognize—but it made the whole place feel hushed, intimate, like stepping into someone’s favorite memory.
You stood near the entrance for a second too long.
Ellie glanced up and froze. Her pen paused mid-word. You caught the brief flicker of surprise on her face—like she wasn’t expecting to ever see you here, like this part of her life was separate and you’d somehow wandered past the invisible boundary.
But then her expression shifted, softening into something unreadable. The corners of her mouth twitched like she was trying to decide whether to smile or run.
She settled on a weird middle ground. "Oh," she said nonchalantly. "Hey."
You raised a hand, suddenly hyper-aware of your own body, your posture, the fact that you hadn’t really thought through what you’d say when this moment came. "Hey. Fancy seeing you here."
Ellie blinked. "In my place of work?"
You laughed, and she smiled for real this time. "Right. I was just... exploring the neighborhood," you lied. "Didn’t realize this store was so close."
She nodded slowly, clearly not buying it—the store was a twenty-minute drive from the apartment complex— but was too polite to call you out. "Yeah? You into CDs?"
"Definitely," you said, scanning the shelves like you weren’t about to have a heart attack. "I mean, I personally prefer vinyls, but yeah, CDs are like, super retro. Very... round."
Ellie snorted. "That’s one way to describe them."
You wandered closer, pretending to browse, your fingers grazing the spines of old cases. She watched you, but not in a judgmental way. More like she was trying to figure you out.
"Do you work every day?" you asked after a moment.
"Nah," she said, leaning on the counter. "Just a few days a week. Tuesdays, Thursdays, sometimes Saturdays."
You nodded like that wasn’t valuable information now burned into your brain. You grabbed a Fleetwod Mac CD, and took out your wallet to pay. "Cool," you said. "Guess I’ll have to stop by again."
"No, uh, don’t worry. It’s on the house." Ellie scratched the back of her neck, eyes darting to her Casio watch. "You, uh... wanna hang out after I’m done? My shift ends at five."
"You sure?"
"You don’t have to. I just thought—I dunno, maybe we could go get coffee. Or you could show me your superior taste in 'very round CDs.'"
You grinned. "I’d like that."
Ellie looked down, then back up through her lashes. "Cool. Yeah. Cool."
You ended up spending the next half hour pretending to look through racks while sneaking glances at her—and she, in return, kept stealing glances at you in the reflection of the display glass. And when five o’clock finally rolled around, she practically flew out from behind the counter, tugging on her jacket and fumbling with the sleeves like she was nervous. Which, honestly, made two of you.
THE COFFEE SHOP Ellie picked was small, local, and mostly empty by the time you both got there—quiet enough that your conversation didn’t have to compete with the noise, but not so silent that the pauses felt heavy. The barista gave Ellie a little nod when she walked in, like she was a regular, and Ellie just muttered a soft 'hey' back before holding the door open for you.
You sat by the window, your cups warming your hands, and the conversation came easier than you thought it would. Ellie was shy, yeah, but not in that way where she tried to disappear. It was more like she was deliberate. Careful. She listened to you like you were saying things worth remembering.
She told you about the weird guy who always came in looking for jazz CDs they didn’t have, and how she’d once spent two hours reorganizing the punk section just because she couldn’t stand the way someone else had done it. You talked about the move, the disaster of trying to assemble your own bookshelf, and the apartment above yours that sounded like a zoo with a drum set.
Ellie laughed at that one, and you caught yourself staring just a little too long at the way her eyes crinkled when she did it. You suddenly felt the urge to count every single freckle that was marked in her face.
Somewhere between a refill and a shared chocolate chip cookie, she glanced at the clock and said, "Wanna come over?"
"To your place?"
She scratched at the back of her neck. "I mean, only if you want. No pressure. I just—I have this CD collection I was talking about and, uh... coffee shops close eventually."
You tried not to smile too obviously. "Sure. I’d love to."
Ellie’s apartment was quite similar to yours—after all, both were from the same block, but something about it was undeniably her. The couch was beat-up but clean, the walls were decorated with band posters and a couple of hand-drawn sketches you didn’t ask about yet, and her windowsill had a few neglected plants that were somehow still alive.
"I wasn’t really expecting company," she said, kicking off her shoes near the door. "Sorry if it’s a little... messy."
You looked around. "Ellie, this is better than mine by far."
She shrugged, clearly flustered, and motioned for you to take a seat while she made herself busy putting on a playlist— just background enough to not distract from her own nervous energy. With your drink still in hand, you wandered to the shelf near the TV, running your finger along the neatly organized spines of her CD collection. "So this is the shrine."
"Hey, don’t mock the shrine," she said, coming to stand beside you. "It’s got history."
You glanced at the rows and rows of titles—some familiar, others completely new to you. "What’s your holy trinity, then?"
She paused, seriously considering it. "Green Day, Radiohead, and—don’t laugh—The Smashing Pumpkins."
You blinked. "Why would I laugh?"
"I dunno. People always think I’m gonna say something cooler. Nirvana or something."
You smiled. "I think that is cool."
Ellie ducked her head and muttered, "Yeah, well... you look cool, so I’m trusting your judgment."
You turned toward her, and right as you opened your mouth to say something, you felt it—a warm splash of beverage sloshing right onto your top. You looked down at the spreading stain and groaned. "Oh my god. I can’t take me anywhere."
Ellie reacted fast, already rummaging through a basket of laundry near the couch. "Wait—here. I, uh, I’ve got something you can wear."
She tossed you a hoodie, worn and soft and a little big. The same one she wore the first time she saw you. You pulled it on without thinking—slightly mortified, and very aware of how it smelled exactly like her. It was stupid. It was just detergent and something like cedar and maybe... her shampoo? But it hit you like a memory you hadn’t made yet, and when you looked back at Ellie, she was definitely flustered.
"You okay?" she asked, voice a little tight.
You nodded, tugging at the sleeves. "This is so comfy. You might never get it back."
Ellie laughed nervously. "That’s, uh... fine. You look good in it."
The sentence hung between you for a beat too long. You turned back to the CDs. "Show me your favorites."
And she did.
You sat cross-legged on her living room floor while she pulled out album after album, fingers brushing the covers like they were sacred texts. Time slipped away. The music got quieter, the light outside faded to black, and before either of you realized it, the clock on her microwave blinked 1:04 AM.
"Oh shit," Ellie said, glancing over. "You’re probably exhausted. I didn’t mean to keep you here so long."
You rubbed your eyes, yawning. "I am tired. But like, in a good way. I had fun."
Ellie stood awkwardly, hovering near the door. "Do you want me to walk you back?”
"It’s literally ten steps ahead."
"Still," she muttered, fidgeting with her fingers.
There was a weird, sudden stillness. Not uncomfortable exactly—just... charged. Like you’d both walked to the edge of something without realizing it, and now neither of you knew what to do. You stood in the doorway, Ellie’s hoodie still wrapped around you, warm from her and too soft to take off just yet.
"I should go," you said.
"Okay," Ellie agreed, voice quiet.
You could feel it—just beneath the surface—the shared, unspoken thing you both wanted. The maybe. The what if. But neither of you crossed the line.
Instead, you gave her a soft smile and a breathy 'goodnight,' and Ellie rubbed the back of her neck and murmured it back. When the door finally closed behind you, your heart thudded like you’d just run a mile.
Back in your apartment, you curled into the matress that laid on the floor, still wearing her hoodie, surrounded by the quiet hum of the night, and told yourself you were fine. That you’d get another chance. You didn’t know Ellie was sitting on the other side of the wall, wide awake, hoodie-less, and thinking the exact same thing.
THE NEXT MORNING, you woke slowly. And the first thing that you felt was Ellie’s hoodie. Still wrapped around you. Still warm in the chest, even if the sleeves were cold now. You’d never meant to fall asleep in it, but you hadn’t been able to make yourself take it off either. Not when it still smelled like her. Not when it felt like the last piece of her you got to keep before things got too real. Before either of you dared to name what last night had almost been.
You sat up, groaning at the way your spine protested after crashing half-sideways across your bare mattress. One arm still tucked under a throw pillow, hair wild with sleep. You ran your hand through it and stretched—and that’s when you heard the voices. Muffled at first. Laughter. Two people in the hallway, maybe just outside your door. You froze.
One of them was Ellie. You’d recognize her voice anywhere by now. That low rasp that turned warm when she laughed. And she was laughing—louder than you’d heard her in days. And the other voice? Feminine. Confident. Light and teasing.
You moved quietly, barefoot on the wooden floor, hoodie still draped over your frame like a second skin. You opened your apartment’s door just enough to let sound bleed in, and curiosity got the better of you. Just a peek, you told yourself.
You leaned into the silence of your own apartment, looking at the hall. And there she was. Ellie. Hair still damp from a shower, in a flannel over a gray tee and those dirty Converse she always stomped around in. She looked so relaxed, so casual—leaning against the stair railing, grinning in a way she never quite had with you. Her hand came up to push her hair out of her face, and she was looking at the girl beside her. Dark hair pulled into a high ponytail. Pretty. Effortless. Golden skin and a wicked smile and that kind of magnetic energy you’d always admired from a distance. She looked like someone who knew how to charm your mom and talk about records without ever trying too hard. The kind of girl who just fit.
She playfully shoved Ellie’s shoulder and said something that made them both burst into another fit of laughter. And your heart sank. Of course. Of course Ellie wasn’t single. What were you thinking? That someone like her—funny, sweet, handy, effortlessly cool—would just be floating around, unattached? That she'd invite you over, lend you her hoodie, stay up talking music with you ‘til one in the morning because she wanted something more? No. You’d misread it. All of it. You closed the door quietly.
Your face felt hot. Your eyes threatened to let out a couple of tears. You slipped the hoodie off and folded it, hands trembling just slightly, and placed it gently on the edge of the couch like it might burn you if you touched it for too long. Like it had just become hers again, not something you were allowed to keep holding.
And then you started getting ready. Quieter than usual. Slower. You told yourself you’d imagined it. That it didn’t matter. That it was fine. You’d just… back off. Respect the boundary you hadn’t realized existed.
Ellie noticed something was off that same day. No music playing. No lights on. Not even the faint sound of footsteps inside like usual. The little signs she’d come to expect over the past few days—gone. And the worst of all? You hadn’t texted her.
She bit the inside of her cheek as she walked down the street, bag slung over one shoulder, thumb hovering over your contact in her phone. She kept replaying last night over and over again in her head—the way you looked in her hoodie, how you smiled at her dumb music rants, how close your knees had been on the floor, how you hadn’t kissed her when you left. And how she hadn’t kissed you either. Too nervous. Too wrapped up in the fear of ruining something before it even started.
She walked into the shop, tossed her bag behind the counter, and barely had time to clock in before Jesse—her coworker, and unfortunately, her most observant friend—poked his head in from the back room. "Yo, Williams."
"What."
"You got the personality of a wet sock today. Did something happen?"
Ellie groaned. "I’m fine."
"What the fuck? You’re not. You sighed seven times during that one sentence. That’s a record, even for you."
She pulled the stool out and sat down behind the register, slumping dramatically. "It’s nothing."
Jesse raised a brow. "Is it about hoodie girl?"
Ellie snapped her head up. "What? How do you—"
"You literally texted me last night 'she’s wearing my hoodie and I might die.'"
"Okay first of all, fuck you. And second, I was emotionally compromised."
Jesse leaned on the counter, smirking. "So what happened?"
Ellie looked down, fiddling with the string of her hoodie. "I don’t know. We hung out, it was great—like, really great—and I thought we were gonna maybe... kiss or something? But then she left, and now she’s just—cold. Like, totally ignoring me."
"She see you with Dina?"
Ellie’s brows furrowed. “What?”
"Dee told me she went to pick up her speaker this morning. Maybe she saw you two together."
Ellie’s jaw dropped. "She thinks I’m dating Dina?"
Jesse just gave her a look. "Wouldn’t be the wildest assumption, dude. Dina is hot. And you two always look cozy as hell."
Ellie slumped back in the stool. "Shit."
"So go tell her." Jesse folded his arms. "Like, right now."
"I can’t just show up and be like 'Hey, by the way, that girl I was laughing with? Not my girlfriend!'"
"Why not?"
"Because it’s—" Ellie rubbed her face. "I don’t know, it’s embarrassing. What if she didn’t see me with Dina? What if I read everything wrong? What if she’s not into me like that?"
Jesse tilted his head. "Are you into her like that?"
Ellie didn’t answer. She didn’t have to. He smiled. "Then fix it, you idiot."
But Ellie just sat there, heart caught somewhere between hope and dread, wondering how the hell she was supposed to explain the mess when you wouldn’t even look at her anymore.
FOR THE REST of the week, you did your best to act like everything was fine.
Avoiding Ellie wasn’t hard, exactly. Not at first. You slipped out early to grab coffee before she left for work. And you told yourself—again and again—that it didn’t hurt. That you weren’t letting your mind wander back to the way she’d smiled at you in her dim little apartment, the way her voice had gone all soft and reverent when she’d talked about her guitar and her favorite bands. That you weren’t still thinking about her hoodie, folded on your couch like something sacred, something almost yours.
But even so… you missed her. And she noticed. She wasn’t stupid, either. Every time Ellie walked past your apartment, her chest tightened just a little. She couldn’t stop checking—subtle little glances at your windows, your doormat, listening for footsteps inside. But she was met with nothing, just pure silence.
It had been nine days. Nine days since your almost-date. Since you wore her hoodie and sat so close she could smell your shampoo. Since you’d yawned around midnight and she’d practically panicked, blurting something awkward about how you didn’t have to go but also yeah totally if you’re tired cool cool yeah no worries. And she hadn’t even walked you to your place. Just stood there, heart in her throat, as you smiled at her one last time without kissing her. Now you didn’t even look at her. And Ellie? Ellie didn’t know how to fix it.
That evening, a thunderstorm rolled in with no warning. It was more chilly than you expected, and by the time you realized, Ellie’s hoddie was back like a second skin. You tried to lie to yourself, thinking you were too tired to open the winter clothes box. But in reality, it was just to feel it again. You’d tried to settle into a book, when the lights suddenly flickered… and then went out. You sat in stunned silence for a beat before peeking out your window and confirmed what you feared—the whole damn block was dark. Not a gleam streetlamp in sight.
And the worst part? You didn’t have a single candle. So you were swallowed by black-pitched darkness. You were just settled back onto your couch, the book long forgotten by now, when someone knocked. A soft, tentative knock. You froze. And then came her voice.
"Hey… It’s Ellie."
Your heart did a little jump, stupid and immediate. You stood slowly, suddenly all too aware of your pajama shorts and the way your hair had half-dried in soft, tangled waves.
You opened the door. Ellie stood there holding two thick candles—one already lit, the other one tucked under her arm—and a slightly sheepish expression. She was wearing a red flannel, straight jeans, and a pair of black Converse. Her hair was tucked messily behind her ears, her freckles barely visible in the low light.
"Power’s out," she said.
"Yeah. I noticed."
She shifted her weight, and if she had noticed you wearing her hoodie, she chose not to say anything. "Thought you might need these."
You took the candles from her slowly, your fingers brushing hers in the exchange. Her hand was warm. You swallowed. "Thanks."
Ellie nodded, but didn’t move. She glanced into your apartment and then back at you, chewing the inside of her cheek. "You okay?" she asked. "You’ve been, uh, quiet lately."
You hesitated, trying to ignore the knot isnide your chest. She had noticed. Your heart beat against your ribs, stubborn and tired. "Yeah. I’m fine."
A pause. "You’ve been avoiding me."
Your breath caught as you looked away. "No, I haven’t."
Ellie tilted her head, gently, like she knew you were lying. "Okay. Cool, then."
"Do you wanna come in?" You mumbled, stepping back. Fuck. Why’d you even said that?
She bit the inside of her cheek. "Only if it’s okay."
You nodded once. "Yes. It’s okay." So she stepped in.
The candlelight made everything feel hazier, slower. Her shadow danced across your floor as she walked toward your living room and stood awkwardly near your bookshelf, hands shoved into her hoodie pocket. You followed her in, set the candles on the table, and sat.
Ellie sat too—but not too close. She glanced around, then down at her lap.
"I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable," she said finally, voice soft. "The other day. At my place."
"You didn’t," you said too quickly. She looked up. You wrung your hands in your lap. "I just… It was silly for me to misread the situation, I guess."
Ellie blinked, then blinked again. "What do you mean?"
You gave her a look. "You know. I saw you with the girl... friend."
Realization dawned on her face. "Dina?"
You didn’t answer. Great. She had a pretty name too.
Ellie let out a breath and leaned back. "She’s not my girlfriend. She’s—God—she’s like my sister. We’ve known each other since middle school. We were talking about Uncharted."
That made you look at her. "Uncharted?"
"Yeah, she was making fun of me for being obsessed with it, and playing the stupid game the whole night. It wasn’t flirting."
A small laugh broke out of you before you could stop it, quick and surprised. Ellie smiled—just a little. And then the room got quiet again. That flickering, charged quiet where neither of you really knew what to say next.
Until Ellie whispered, "You look really good in my hoodie."
You swallowed hard, but didn’t answer. Ellie’s gaze flicked to yours. Her cheeks were flushed, soft pink in the candlelight, but smiled anyway.
"I thought maybe you were gonna kiss me," she murmured.
You felt your whole face go warm. "I wanted to."
She blinked slowly. "Then why didn’t you?"
"I got scared."
Ellie’s voice was barely above a whisper. "Me too."
You looked at her then. She looked nervous, her knee bouncing like she couldn’t sit still. She was leaning in just a little—but not enough. Like she was halfway between running and staying. And then she said it, "can I try again?"
Your breath caught. You nodded once, biting your lower lip unconsciously. And this time, she leaned all the way in, her hands finding your cheeks. The kiss was soft, shy, and barely there—like both of you were scared it would vanish if you moved too fast. But then she pressed in a little closer, and your hand slid gently to her cheek, and she smiled against your mouth.
And when you pulled back, her forehead rested against yours. In the flickering candlelight, everything else faded. No hallway whispers. No misunderstandings. Just Ellie. Warm and nervous and real.
THE MORNING SUN peeked in lazily through Ellie’s half-drawn curtains. The green-eyed girl had been working her ass off last week, and still pleaded you to wake her up once you did, but you weren’t going to do it. She needed the sleep. So here you were now, bleary-eyed, standing barefoot in her kitchen and wearing Ellie’s Pink Floyd oversized shirt.
You were trying to figure out the ancient coffee machine she kept saying 'wasn’t that bad' when you heard the apartment door creak open. No knock. No announcement. Just a solid, casual entrance. You froze with one hand on your chest, wide-eyed.
"Ellie, if you’re gonna leave your damn wrench where I can trip over it, I swear to—"
You turned just in time for him to round the corner into the living room, carrying a paper bag and squinting toward the kitchen. He paused when he saw you. His eyes dropped to the oversized shirt, the unbrushed hair, your whole deer-in-headlights vibe. His brow lifted—just slightly—but it said everything. "Well," he said slowly, adjusting the grip on the bag, "you ain’t Ellie."
You cleared your throat. "Um—no. She’s still asleep. I think. Probably."
The man stared at you for another long beat, then sighed through his nose and gave a slow, skeptical nod. "Right."
And just like that, Ellie burst out of her room, hair a mess, wearing a tank top, some boxers and a mismatched pair of socks, looking completely and utterly disoriented.
"Oh—shit," she groaned, voice thick with sleep. "Joel. What—uh—what are you—what time is it?"
Joel raised the bag. "Brought you breakfast. And coffee. Thought I’d surprise you. Guess you beat me to it."
Your face was probably nuclear at that point. Ellie looked like she might combust from within. Joel’s gaze shifted between the two of you. He let out a grunt. "Well. I’ll be damned."
"I’m gonna—uh—bathroom. I’m gonna use it. Yours," you muttered, already halfway down the corridor. "Yep. Bathroom. Gone." You shut the door behind you and leaned against it, hand covering your face.
Out in the living room, there was a heavy pause.
"So," Joel began, in a voice that could only mean trouble, "you finally got your head outta your ass."
"Dude. Please." Ellie rubbed a hand over her face. "She’s not— I mean—we’re not, like… together together."
Joel arched a brow. "Does she know that? ‘Cause she’s wearin’ half your closet and looked quite comfortable in your kitchen."
Ellie’s mouth opened and closed. No response. No correction. Joel nodded to himself. "Didn’t think so."
"I didn’t say anything!" Ellie hissed, lowering her voice like you might somehow hear through the closed door.
"But you ain’t denying it either, kiddo." Joel said smugly. "Look, I’m not gonna give you the whole dad speech or... whatever. You’re grown. But if that girl’s gonna be hangin’ around, I expect you to treat her right. Like how I raised you. No ghostin’. No weird mind games. No—"
Ellie sputtered. "Jesus, Joel, can you not?"
"You like her or not?" He asked calmly.
She was quiet for a long beat. "…Yeah," she said, voice soft and barely audible.
Joel grunted, satisfied. "Then don’t be an idiot."
The bathroom door creaked open a second later. You emerged, trying your best to look composed despite the fact your heart was definitely doing somersaults.
Joel glanced between the two of you, and his face softened for just a second—like he was genuinely happy for Ellie. "Well," he said. "I should get goin’. You kids behave."
Ellie groaned, already anticipating some parting remark. "Don’t say it—"
Joel ignored her entirely, giving you a quick, amused glance. "Good luck dealin’ with this one," he said, jerking a thumb at Ellie like she wasn’t standing right there. "And bon appétit."
You grinned. "Thanks for the breakfast."
"Take care," Joel said with a wink, then stepped out the door and closed it behind him with a soft click.
A moment of silence settled over the apartment. You turned slowly to face Ellie, arms crossed, squinting with faux betrayal. "You. Nearly gave me a heart attack."
"Me?" Ellie blinked, slightly offended. "What?"
"Don’t 'what' me, Williams," you said, marching toward her dramatically. "Your dad, or whatever he is—just walks in like he owns the place and finds me in your shirt, barefoot and barely awake, making a fool of myself trying to work that prehistoric coffee machine—"
"You mean the beautifully vintage coffee machine?" she interjected, raising a hand in mock offense.
You shoved her shoulder gently. "Don’t deflect! I looked like I had just rolled out of bed after a one-night stand!"
Ellie choked. "You didn’t! You—you look cute."
Your brain short-circuited at that for half a second, but you rallied. "I was wearing your clothes, Ellie!"
"I didn’t tell you to wear my clothes!" she argued, but her voice was breathless, half-laughing. "And you do look cute!"
You shoved her again, this time with both hands, and she stumbled backward into the couch, grinning as she caught herself.
"Oh, okay, so it’s my fault," she said, recovering. "Next time, I’ll just let you walk around naked. Note taken."
"You didn’t even try to explain!" you pointed out, still feigning dramatic offense.
Ellie held her hands up in surrender, though her face and ears were red. "Okay, okay, you’re right! I panicked!"
"You liked it," you accused.
"I did not—!" Ellie protested, but she was laughing mid-sentence. "Okay—maybe. Maybe a little. It was kinda… nice. I mean, not the surprise Joel part. That part sucked."
You hovered above her where she’d half-sunk into the couch cushions, breathless from all the mock fighting, face flushed. The laughter slowed between you both.
"It was nice," you echoed, voice soft now. "Him thinking I was your girlfriend."
Ellie looked up at you, suddenly quiet, her grin faded into something gentler, something almost vulnerable. "You didn’t run away screaming, so… that’s something."
You dropped your gaze, fighting a shy smile. "I thought about it. Then I remembered I still have your hoodie, and you’d probably come after me."
Ellie sat up a little straighter, nudging your knee with hers. "Damn right I would’ve. It’s one of my favorites, you know."
"You’re unbelievable."
"But charming," she added hopefully.
You tilted your head like you were thinking it over. "Eh. You’re on thin ice."
She reached over and poked your side, making you squirm. "I brought you breakfast."
"That was mostly Joel." You finally let yourself smile fully, sitting beside her and tucking your legs underneath you, shoulder brushing hers.
"But I didn’t stop him," she said proudly. "You’re welcome."
You laughed again, leaning your head on her shoulder without thinking. It just felt natural. Warm. Safe.
Her voice was softer now, almost a whisper: "You can… stay. If you want. A little longer. You don’t have to rush back."
You didn’t lift your head. "You sure? I might steal more of your clothes."
"I’d let you," she mumbled. Then, like it was the easiest thing in the world, she added, "they look better on you anyway."
Your heart flipped. "God," you murmured, eyes closing, "you’re such a loser."
"Yours though," she said under her breath.

no.1 clingy sukuna believer
you could be at your desk just reading over essays or paperwork and trust he'll find a way to linger near your desk. suddenly he's reorganising your papers claiming that it's too messy or that you dropped something off the desk. then you find him sharpening your pencils, making each one of them sharp enough to pierce skin.
then he huffs really loud once he realises that your eyes will not look up at him, glued to the paper you're reading.
'something wrong?'
'no.'
'why'd you keep pacing up and down then?'
'bored.'
'go find something to do then.' you reply in a sweet tone.
'i wanna do you.' Sukuna mumbles, his voice low enough for you not to hear.
'what was that?'
'nothing, let me know when you're finished.' he huffs leaving the room.

I would love a take on boyfriend Ghost coming home to surprise you, but he finds your bed empty and doesn't realize that you are in his room in his bed. Thanks.
The placebo effect, was what he kept trying to convince you it had to be, no matter how many times you rolled your eyes and told him he was wrong
How else could one explain your insistence that Simon’s bed smelled so much like him, becoming your safe space when he was away on long deployments, when he only ever slept with you in your bed most nights to begin with
Hard to believe it was nearly three years ago now that you’d told your friend since childhood, Johnny, about how your search for a new flat was going miserably. You remember how he’d perked up and recounted with a mischievous glint in his eye about how his Lieutenant was apparently searching for a flat mate at the moment, someone who’d be looking after the place while he was away for work
Unsure about living with a strange man you’d never met before, but trusting Johnny’s judgement (though the way he seemed just a bit too eager about this meeting did kind of throw you off-) you had reluctantly agreed to meet with him and at least give the flat a glance before you simply turned him down
It wasn’t until you were knocking at the door of the address Johnny had written down for you, that you’d realized he’d never even given you the man’s goddamn name, only ever referring to him at Lieutenant or LT
Johnny apparently also failed to mention the absolute SIZE of the guy, his huge frame blocking nearly all of the light from behind him as he had swung the door open and stood in the doorway before you
In a slight panic, thrown off by the massive man before you and the way the butterflies in your stomach suddenly began to flutter at the sight of him, you had greeted him for the first time with a squeaky, unsure voice saying ‘Um, hi, are you the Mr Lieutenant?’ (something he has never let you live down since)
He knew then and there that you would be the one
Not just his flatmate (though what a generous flatmate he was when he offered insisted on moving all your boxes out of your old place and into his that very same day), but the one, something he reluctantly had to give Soap credit for, seeing as he was the one who wouldn’t stop talking his ear off about you
You would be his other half, his better half
And all these years later, the two bedroom flat truly only acted as a one bedroom, considering that from the start Simon was always falling into your bed with you at the end of each night, limbs tangled together under the warmth of a lovers embrace a thousand times more comforting than an actual comforter
Still though, that first time Simon had to be gone for work longer than a few weeks, you found the lingering odor of him clinging to his bedsheets to be one of the few things keeping you sane in his absence, taking to sleeping in his room for the time being, imagining that the pillow you cling to your front was a strong muscular arm instead, littered in scars and tattoos you feel confident you could recognize from touch alone
And when his long awaited flight back home to you landed a few hours earlier than expected, tires touching down in the dark, stillness of late night hour, he decided he’d surprise you and come straight home, rather than calling you to meet him at the base like you’d insisted, not wanting to wake you
Barely able to contain himself, he decided the elevator ride up to the seventh floor would take too long, take away precious seconds that brought him closer to you, and so up the flight of stairs he went, taking them two or three at a time, rushing to see the face etched behind his eyelids every time he closed his eyes, to hear the voice that haunted his dreams each night
Quietly as a man his size could, he crept into the flat, snuck his way into your room, expecting to see your sweet, sleeping form cuddled up amongst the blankets and pillows. But his heart dropped when he noticed the bed was still perfectly made, not a thread out of place.
Trying to remain calm, though his mind was instantly swarming with every possible scenario that could have taken place, he knew he saw your shoes and jacket by the door, you couldn’t have gone far… but where were you?
He glanced into the living room, wondering if he missed you sleeping on the couch after a long day, he poked his head into the bathroom, even went so far as to check the small balcony, but finally there was only one door left to open.
And there you were, safe and sound, a tiny ball curled up into the center of his huge bed, clinging to one of his old masks and holding it close to your chest as though it were a security blanket (you’d been sleeping in his bed so much you needed something that still smelled strongly of him, you were getting desperate)
Stripping himself down to only his boxers, he tiptoed towards the side of the bed, his mind finally feeling more at peace than he ever had, gently pulling the sheets back just enough for him to slip in behind you, his strong arms wrapping around your middle and pulling you into his muscular chest
Though it should be alarming to suddenly feel a pair of hands roaming over your skin, a body holding you firmly against their own, it’s as though your body knows who it is before your mind does
Any tension you were still holding onto during his absence instantly melts away, your own hands coming to land over top of his, giving a slight squeeze of acknowledgment, not yet willing to fully leave your half asleep state, but needing to touch him, to confirm he really is here
“Hmm,” You hum, voice groggy with sleep and a smile slowly stretching across your lips, snuggling further into his embrace. “You’re home.”
He presses a kiss to the top of your head, breathing you in, wishing he could bottle up the scent of your shampoo and lotions and perfumes, if only to have something to hold onto while he’s away, understanding now why he found you in this bed rather than your own
“I am.” He whispers into your hair, sensing that you’re already drifting back into dream land, safe in his arms and his bed, knowing he’ll be there when you wake. He feels his chest tighten when he knows that you weren’t talking about the fact that he’s physically home, in the flat, but something more, something much more, because he means the same thing when he tells you, “You’re my home too, love.”

Imagine being Sylus' non-mc significant other.
Imagine you knew that loving Sylus meant walking a fine line between devotion and danger. You knew that his world was carved in shadows and half truths wrapped in kisses. A voice that could make you forget your doubts.
Imagine you always told yourself it was just the nature of his work, the late nights, the missed calls, the way he always seemed to have somewhere else to be. You love him. Because while you never had his mornings. You always had his midnights.
Imagine the way he would often disappear for days and return with eyes darker than usual and in some rare nights, he would come home with bruises blooming just beneath his skin but when he looked at you, his eyes soften. Like being with you was enough.
Imagine the world you've built in the cracks he left open slowly and carefully. A world where danger lived just outside your window but with love, his love, was kept in your heart every time he whispered your name like a confession. He let you believe you were his only truth.
Imagine at first, it was just the silence. The kind that didn't feel like peace but absence. The kind of pause before a lie, the dead space where love should live. Sylus had always been a guarded man. The kind who touched you like you were fragile but spoke like his words were bullets.
but Imagine, that was just part of his charm. The mystery and quiet restraint behind his smirks. Not until she started showing up. MC. At first, she was just a ghost in his schedule, an excuse.
"Work" He say, turning away from you in bed, phone lighting up his face. "Can't talk about it." You nod, moving closer to him in. You did not push the topic because that's what trust looked like, right?
Imagine then came the little things. A strand of hair on his coat. Perfume that wasn't yours. A coffee order on his receipt you had never seen him drink. The subtle way his tone changed when he was tired softer, more honest, but only when talking to someone else.
Imagine you did not bring it up. You didn't want to be paranoid. You didn’t want to be that person. The kind who checks phones or asks too many questions. But the truth has a way of bleeding through, no matter how hard you cover it.
Imagine that night, after a few weeks of not seeing each other. You cooked him dinner. You even wore the clothes he liked. You thought maybe, just maybe, he'd finally open up. Instead, he walked in distracted, checking his phone. He did not even look at you.
Imagine the way you asked him who he was texting. One that was meant to sound casual, but your voice cracked halfway through. He paused. Just for a second. That second told you everything. "It's MC."
"Don't." He said, eyes flickering up to yours. "It's not what you think." That was the first time he didn't lie smoothly. The first time he looked like the villain everyone said he was. Not because of the crime, the guns or the secrets. But because he looked at you with guilt.
Imagine you knew why he stayed the night. It was not out of love but because he doesn't know how to leave you gently. So you lay beside him awake until dawn, breathing in a man who loved someone else in front of you. And when the morning come, you did not say goodbye. You just lay there and felt him when he left.
Imagine that's how you learned the painful truth. You weren't his secret weapon. You were just his secret shame. And all the danger in the world doesn't compare to the pain of being loved second.

what NOT to do with your brother's best friend
by: someone who absolutely did all of these things
꩜ pairing: modern!au abby anderson x female reader
꩜ warnings: explicit content, language
꩜ word count: 700 (ish)
꩜ synopsis: a cheeky, steamy confessional from a girl who’s broken every rule in the book.
(i) Don’t flirt with Abby Anderson.
Even if she could probably bench-press your car. Even if she’s got that annoyingly sexy jawline and calls you "pretty" in a voice that makes your brain short-circuit. Especially not if she’s stretching in front of you after sparring with your brother and lifts her stupidly tight Henley to wipe sweat off her face.
That was the first time you imagined her between your legs. Certainly not the last.
(ii) Don’t let her stay the night.
Her apartment’s getting fumigated. You don’t question why she asked you instead of your brother. She offers to sleep on the couch. You’re not an idiot—her legs don’t even fit on that sad excuse for a sofa.
So yeah, she ends up in your bed.
No.
No, it’s not like that. Except... you’re still panting from when she rolled on top of you at 2 a.m. and asked if you were dreaming about her. And then her thigh had slotted between yours.
You don’t remember how it started, just how it felt when her hand slipped under your shirt as her teeth found your neck.
She made you come with two fingers and her lips over yours. You clawed the sheets and came again five minutes later when she pushed your knees back and murmured, “Wanna see how loud you really get.”
(iii) Don’t let her teach you how to fight.
“You’ll feel safer walking alone at night,” she says. What she really means is: “I want an excuse to pin you to the mat.”
You’re on lesson #3 when her legs bracket your sides. She leans close, smirking, “Giving up already, pretty?”
You buck your hips and somehow manage to flip her, but make the mistake of getting too cocky. She flips you right back.
When your brother unexpectedly walks in, you’re red-faced, trying not to look like you’re seconds away from jumping his best friend.
Later, after he’s gone, she keeps you under her, eyes twinkling mischievously. “You like being tossed around, huh?”
Lord give you strength.
(iv) Don’t drink with her alone.
You pour one glass of wine. Then another. You're laughing too much, sitting too close, your fingers brushing hers. She traces your collarbone with her thumb, "You always get this flirty when you're drunk?"
You answer by climbing into her lap. She drinks you in like it’s the only thing that’ll actually get her intoxicated. Your fingers tangle in her hair. Her hand slips under your skirt, and she hisses when she finds you soaked through. She eats you out on your balcony. Your climax hits you with your back arching to the stars and her mouth still on you.
She doesn’t let you go down on her until you beg.
You do. Twice.
(v) Don’t go with her to that weekend cabin trip.
You think: Separate rooms, separate boundaries. She thinks: One bed. No clothes.
By the time Sunday rolls around, you’ve had sex on the porch, in the shower, and bent over a countertop while she whispered, “When I'm done with you, you’re not gonna be able to sit right for a week, baby.”
You thank her by dragging your tongue down her abs until she forgets her own name.
(vi) Don’t fall for her.
This. This is the most important.
Because it's not part of the plan. You were supposed to just have fun and sneak around.
But, it’s her bringing you your favourite snacks without asking. Her hand drawing circles on your lower back when you’re anxious. Her grin when you make her laugh so hard, she snorts.
She tells you that you look good in her hoodie and you almost black out.
It’s the way she kisses you like she’s trying to remember every inch of your skin. The way she touches you like she’s memorising every bit.
It’s you realising she’s the safest place you’ve ever been in a long time.
It happens slowly. Then, all at once.
You fall. Good thing she catches you.
(vii) Definitely don’t tell your brother.
You do.
He only blinks, much too smugly informing you that "the way you two look at each other" made it plenty obvious from the get-go.
“Just don’t make me walk in on you guys dry-humping or something gross,” he groans, then goes back to his video game.
Abby kisses you breathless later in your apartment that evening and says, “Told you he’d be cool with it.” You punch her arm with a glare, embarrassed. She kisses you harder and happily lets you drag her to your room.

Dog Tags (4)
Summary: Bucky Barnes x fe!Reader -> After you get discharged from the hospital, things start to change between you and Bucky.
Disclaimer: This is part four to parts one, two and three. Little angst, lot of fluff, Bucky and reader train together, found family moments between the team, Sam and Wanda being exhausted shippers, Bucky blushes, swearing. Not Proof Read.
By the time you were finally discharged from the hospital, Bucky was the one to bring you home.
“Bucky, I can carry my own bags.” You watched as he hauled your overnight over his shoulder before pushing the trunk of the car down.
“You’ve only just been discharged from the hospital and I don’t exactly feel like calling them up, as your husband, and telling them you’ve busted a stitch.”
“My stitches healed ages ago.”
Bucky shook his head. “Not taking any chances.”
“You’re a pain in my ass,” you told him, though it didn’t hold as much bite as it used to.
Bucky turned around with you in the elevator before clicking the button for the compound apartments.
“And you’re a thorn in my side, sweetheart.”
You just smiled to yourself as the doors closed in front of yourself and Bucky.
It was noticeable, the change, between yourself and Bucky.
The rare good morning grunts, or more often; complete, yet heavy, silence. They had been swapped for smiles and genuine good mornings. The training and shift patterns were easier to assign, mission reports were completed with less dent marks in the paper, and the evening dinners were less awkward.
Sam and Wanda had become hopeful. They all had.
“They look happy, don’t they?” Sam asked aloud, already knowing Wanda was silently standing beside him.
She smiled. “They really do.”
Down the hallway, you and Bucky were exiting the training room, laughing. The look in Bucky’s eyes – the light – had been rare to see in the last year. But when he was with you…
The light between both of you could blind any shadow.
“Is it permanent?” Sam asked, something in his gut denying him true joy.
Wanda smiled, hopefully. “I think so. Their connection runs deep. He helped her heal. She helped him. Nobody can end a connection like that.”
Sam nodded, turning his head to look back down the corridor where you and Bucky had just turned. He could only hope it would last.
Bucky had been in love with you for a long time, even if he didn’t like it. Sam didn’t want him to hide it away. He deserved love. And so did you.
Even when all you did was fight, you were each other's safe space.
“Are you sure you know what you’re doing?”
“Shut up.”
“Because one wrong hit and it all falls down.”
You were starting to regret agreeing to family games night at Kate’s apartment. It was yourself, Kate, Yelena, Clint and Bucky; all sat on the floor.
“Careful, doll.”
“Shut up.”
You knew you’d taken a risky move with the jenga block, but if you’d chosen the one Clint had first been trying to ‘help’ you towards, you’d lose.
“You know, this is a stupid game. We should play something else.” Yelena said. Her’s would be a different tune if she hadn’t lost the last round.
Kate shushed her, “She’s gonna do it.”
Clint looked at his work partner. “This is a one for all game. Can’t be girls vs boys. We’re outnumbered.”
Yelena scoffed. “Bucky is like…ancient. He qualifies for two people, at least.”
You sniggered, trying to keep your focus on the wooden block.
“You are a child.” Clint deadpanned before turning to Bucky. “They’re children.”
“Ah!” You pulled the brick free and held up your arms. “Done it!”
The tower remained standing for another minute before Clint took his go and the tower came falling down.
Yelena just laughed, “Ha.”
You chuckled, pushing yourself to stand. “Okay, I’m getting another drink.”
“I’ll set up the next game.” Yelena called out before picking up the monopoly board.
“I’ll come with you,” Bucky said as you stepped over his legs before helping him up.
As the pair of you walked into the kitchen, you could hear the other three stuck in an argument over who should be the banker.
“Beer?”
Bucky held out his hand and you passed him the two in your hand. Popping off both caps, he threw the tops into the sink before handing you yours.
You both clinked the necks of the bottles against each other’s. “You did good.”
“Would have been easier if I didn’t have this super annoying voice coming from across the table.”
Bucky smirked a little, narrowing his eyes. “Now where would the fun in that be?”
You just shook your head as you took a sip of your beer. You leaned against the sink as Bucky leaned adjacent to you.
“So…”
“So?”
Bucky lowered the beer bottle from his lips and braced himself on the counter. “I’ve got a free day tomorrow if you want to…do something. With me.”
You looked him over. “Why are you shy?”
You saw him blush a little as he looked away. “I’m not- I’m not shy.”
You smiled and Bucky felt like he needed to look away despite that being the last thing he wanted to do.
“Bucky,” your voice was soft as you looked at him. “What is it?”
“I just…” Bucky’s question was on the tip of his tongue. But then he chickened out. “I was wondering if you wanted to train with me tomorrow?”
“You were nervous to ask me to train with you?”
Bucky nodded. “Last time I asked, you said no.”
You just stood back for a moment, your eyes fixed on him. “I’ll train with you.”
Bucky felt like his crush in a 40s dancehall had just finally agreed to dance with him. “Really?”
“Really,” you nodded. “Don’t know who would train on their day off, but sure.” You smiled before grabbing the bowl of snacks on the kitchen counter.
“We better get back in there before the bank has a hostage situation.”
Bucky chuckled, following you back into the living room.
By the time the next afternoon rolled around, you and Bucky were beat.
Bucky held his side. “I thought you were taking it easy after your injuries.”
You laughed, “I got a full clearance from the hospital four months ago. Good as new. Thought I’d go easy on you? Never.”
You almost had Bucky to his feet but he pulled a reverse on you. Somehow you found yourself trapped on your knees, your back against his chest. “Little too cocky, sweetheart. And who said I wanted you to go easy on me?”
Jabbing him in the ribs, he calculated your next move. You were rolled onto the mat together. As you had Bucky on his back, you felt him reach for your knife. Only, it wasn’t there.
He felt a small pinch by his side. He looked down, a little breathless. “You remembered.”
A small chuckle left you. “I remember a lot of things about you, Barnes.”
You didn’t know what it was. Your words and their hidden meaning, the smile on his face as he was looking at you, the way his eyes flicked to your lips, or the fact that yours did the same with him. Maybe it was his hand, holding onto the side of your leg, his thumb mindlessly rubbing back and forth. Maybe it was the breathless exchange. Or maybe it was your constant reminder of him that fell forward from your t-shirt.
Dangling between you both were Bucky’s dog tags.
Pulling your attention away from the slow-swinging metal, Bucky spoke, “You’re still wearing them.”
Your gaze locked onto his. “Yeah…never take them off.”
Maybe it was the fact that Bucky was looking at you like…like he wanted to kiss you. Or the fact that you wanted him to.
But something shifted.
You cleared your throat and quickly moved yourself from Bucky’s body and stood up. “I, uh, I should…there’s somewhere I’ve gotta…”
You couldn’t think straight. You just needed to get out of there, before you did something reckless.
The rest was a blur. Gathering your things up, Bucky slowly standing up and trying to keep you calm. He was clueless and worried. And somewhere between it all, you’d pressed his dog tags into his palm and left.
For the next month, things were…awkward, to say the least.
“Has she told you anything?” Bucky asked, once again frustrated that you weren’t talking to him.
It was bordering on week 5 of you ignoring him.
And it. Was. Maddening.
Wanda shook her head. “No, nothing.”
In saying you’d told her nothing, that was the truth. But deep down, Wanda already knew why. Whatever had happened between you and Bucky after that day…it had scared you. It had opened something up inside of you that you’d been forcing down for a long, long time.
“I thought we were finally getting somewhere,” Bucky sighed as he sat down.
“Maybe you should just try and talk to her.”
“How?” Bucky almost exclaimed.
“And we’re standing again,” Wanda whispered to herself as Bucky launched himself from the sofa and started pacing again.
“Everytime I see her, she doesn’t look at me. If she sees me coming down the corridor, she takes a completely different exit. We got assigned a three day recon mission last week, she won’t take the mission.”
“She’ll take the mission, Bucky.”
He just shook his head. “She won’t. She hates me. Again. I don’t even…”
“She doesn’t hate you, Bucky. She never has.” Wanda told him. “Look, Y/n…she’s not someone who trusts easily. And she trusts you, Bucky. I know she does. Maybe even more than she even knows. Which also means, I know that it scares her.”
Wanda stood and laid a light hand on Bucky’s chest, a little over his heart. “Just talk to her. Find her. Make her sit down if you have to. Talk. It’s the only thing you can do.”
Bucky bowed his head and sighed. That was even if he could get you alone in a room for ten minutes.
“We need to talk.”
You ducked your head as if a bullet had just been fired towards you. “Jesus- James.” You closed your eyes and sighed heavily. “You need to stop sneaking up on me. Make a noise or do something. How long have you been standing there?”
“Ten minutes. At least,” Bucky answered honestly before pushing himself from the wall. “I wanted to make sure you weren’t about to run off. And, from the way you’ve been punching that bag, I’d say you’re really pissed at someone.”
“Want me to give you three guesses?”
Bucky just hummed and continued to watch you as he stood a little closer.
“What do you want, Bucky?”
“I want to talk.”
“What about?” You continued to hit the punching bag in front of you.
“You know what.”
“No, I don’t.”
Bucky came and held the bag still and for a moment, you stood back. Breathless, sweaty and tired, you looked at him.
“I know you’re not dumb, Y/n. You know what.”
You stepped away, untying the bandage from your hands. “Enlighten me.”
Bucky watched as you walked away from him. He could take a lifetime of you hating him, but not a lifetime of you ignoring him.
“Aren’t you tired of this game?”
“What game?”
“This one. And the one we’ve been doing for the last few years. I thought we made up. I thought we were finally friends.”
You shook your head. “You don’t wanna be my friend, Bucky.”
“Yes, I do.” He stood in front of you before you could walk away. You finally looked at him.
For the first time in over a month, you finally looked at him. And he knew it was still true. He could drown in your gaze for the rest of his life.
“Or maybe I don’t.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“What I do know, however, is that I want you to talk to me. I can take you hating me for the rest of your life, Y/n. But I can’t take you ignoring me. Pretending like we don’t exist.”
“We?”
“What happened here?” You knew what he meant. The training mats were less than eight feet away from you. “That day?”
You turned your gaze away from him, trying to run away from the conversation. “Nothing. Nothing happened.”
He let you pass but he still followed behind you. “Something happened.”
“Nothing happened, Bucky.”
“Y/n.” Bucky stopped walking.
“Goodnight, James. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Y/n, wait!”
Finally, you stopped in your tracks. Your back was still facing him, but you had stopped running. For the moment.
Slowly, you turned around to face him. Your grip tightened on your bag. “What?”
Bucky stood looking at you. Breathless. Angry. Worried. Sad. Annoyed. Tired.
“I can’t keep doing this,” he muttered, almost to himself as he bowed his head and braced his hands on his hips. “I can’t.” He looked back up at you, a little more determined. “I like you, Y/n. I can deal with you hating me. I’d prefer it, actually, compared to you ignoring me. If I’m being completely honest, I more than like you. But since I’ve barely been able to keep you in the same room as me for the last month, I’m gonna keep that to myself until I know you’re not gonna run away from me.”
You didn’t know what to say, so Bucky continued.
“Just…tell me what happened…please.” Bucky was ready to get on his knees and beg.
Your words were caught in your throat. Stuck in place, burning underneath whilst freezing on top. So you did the only thing your body was allowing you to do.
Move.
You could have turned away. You could have ignored it all.
But you stayed.
Bucky watched as you dropped the bag from your shoulder and it landed with a loud thud on the ground. Then you were making your way over to him.
Pulling him in by his dog tags, you placed your other hand by the back of his head and kissed him.
It was safe to say Bucky hadn’t been expecting it. Dreamed of it a few times, but never expected it.
It felt surreal.
You felt his hand clasp your waist, his fingertips pressing lightly into your skin almost as if to check you were real. It wasn’t long before you felt one of his hands beside your face, trying to hold you closer as he kissed you right back.
Eventually the kiss broke apart, but Bucky wasn’t ready to let you go.
“That,” you eventually said. “That was what happened…what almost happened,” you corrected.
Bucky felt lightheaded and unsteady on his feet but in the best way.
“You should have stayed that day.”
You found the courage to finally look at him.
You shook your head. “I…couldn’t. I know it’s bullshit but…it scared me. More than anything. I’ve been hiding that part of myself for so long I just…I didn’t know what to do.”
“Well, just for future reference, this is the better answer.”
You felt yourself chuckle a little once you saw the corner of Bucky’s mouth lift up.
“I can take you hating me, doll. But I can’t take the silence. Even when we’re fighting, I still know you’re there. You still talk to me.”
That was when Bucky let you go.
“What are you doing?”
From around his neck, he pulled the dog tags up and over his head. “Giving you these back.”
“But they’re yours.”
Bucky just laid them over your head and around you, holding them with a smile. “They’ve been yours since you stole them, doll.”
Holding them in your palm, you looked at them.
“They haven’t been the only thing you’ve stolen from me.”
You looked back to Bucky, a softened smile on your face. And he was looking right back at you, the same stupid grin on his face that had been making your stomach fill with butterflies.
“Promise me you won’t run away from me, again?”
You shrugged. “Like you said, this is the better answer.”
Bucky grinned, sharing a laugh with you as he cupped your face before kissing you again.
He hadn’t been expecting for you to kiss him when you did, but he was certainly glad you had. Because it meant he could finally kiss you back.

⭒ㅤwhose (not) random kid
premise. crash landing from the future is apparently your kid, not that you know that anyway... in the form of a mixture between you, and your... supposed counterpart, clues are bound to pile up as to whose child this is.
parts. rosehearts, kingscholar, ashengrotto, al asim, schoenheit, shroud, draconia
cont. gender neutral reader, use of 'mada' which is just 'mama' and 'dada' cut in half for our resident shrimp (aka yuu), a yummy 5.8k words that I did not expect to get this long lol
note. I only have a rough outline of what's going to be included with the others parts after the names of the kids lol. I'll probably write leona's as usual after this but I can't promise I'll release one more part after his this month, the rest will probably come next month considering I'm bombarded sadge. paper defense, then final exams next month save me
also hello! my unnofficial: I'll try to post more
late edit: comment if you want to get tagged <3
riddle
when you slid a foot over the portal to heartslabyul there’s some sort of a strange–inexplicable air that surrounds it. usually the dimension is light to be in, unlike the tingling feelings of being in octavinelle or the eeriness of ignihyde. all dormitories had their own particular sensation that weighs on you depending on where you were.
you squinted, deciding to shrug it off. there was no way you had a sixth sense for feeling in the literal air!
barely a foot in though, was something you could only explain as an army of card… soldiers trudging from the other end of the sidewalk to the next. dumbly, you stopped right in front the shimmering portal that settles into a smooth sheen of silver behind you as they just kept coming.
they seemed to be looking for something–or whatever but you don’t really want to know what so you slowly inched to the side, hoping to sneak past them even if you had to go into one of the confusing mazes (which was a struggle considering you’re trying not to laugh as one of them trips).
must be ace’s wretchedness rubbing off of you.
the real question was, where in the seven were your resident idiots? you’d already sent a text over for your impromptu visit to the chat consisting of you three and figured they had seen it like they usually do then waited for you with feigned begrudging-ness that does not fit well with them showing up in the first place.
you fish for your sad excuse for a phone in your pocket, cater’s words not yours. you’re more busy trying to merge your backside as you shuffle and pull up the chat to notice the ever nearing edge of the hedge wall that makes you stand out in comparison to the lighter shade of green brushing against your uniform.
not deuce: you guys ever notice the card soldiers infestation near ur mirror portal…?
not ace: you nedea to RNR RUN RN!!
not yuu: what???
there’s not much time to ponder about the cryptic, seemingly panicked expression of deuce’s message as you looked up from your phone, feeling a slight chill crawl up to your spine like you attracted some sort of unwarranted trouble that is also unwanted.
disclaimer: you (uu) did
“over here!” an unfamiliar voice yells, freezing you in your tracks just when you were about to make the sneak of the century. without a moment’s hesitation you darted deeper into the maze and shoved your device within the confines of your pockets as you held in a mortified scream at the sudden mob upon your tail as you ran.
WHY WAS THERE SO MANY? you yelled in your mind. number one rule in horror games don’t look back. don’t look back. don’t look back–
oh sevens you’re looking back.
the decision immediately fills you with regret when you spot the diabolical amount of card soldiers trailing after you like you just slaughtered their queen in front of whatever kingdom they came from! was this someone’s unique magic? there was no way riddle would let this sort of thing go rampant on his dorm!
you almost keel over in shock when the pointy end of a heart on the end of a pole sticks right on the patch of grass you just barely managed to trudge across with increasingly heavier steps. maybe you should actually take jack’s offer to join track and field–your stamina is horrible–you’re gonna get stabbed.
goodbye world. you thought warmly with a chorus of pants.
a deeper voice bellowed from the crowd from your behind. “three of hearts! are you thin-headed? do not harm the majesty!” the steps behind you stop almost abruptly, and you don’t stop running even as the voices fade. idiots for choosing to chastise their idiotic comrade but you’re not complaining as long as you get away from this horrid situation.
your majesty what now?
you don’t know how far you ran by sticking to all left turns until you flop down on the entrance of the maze, the archway barely offering you any relief as you took deep breaths and fought the urge to lay down on the grass and hope it camouflages your grey uniform.
that won’t work but you’re coping at this point.
not deuce: HELLO I ALMOST GOT SKEWERED BY LITERAL CARDS?
not yuu: that’s a humiliating way to go down from
not ace: don’t be insensitive ace! are you ok?!
not deuce: NO? WHAT IS GOING ON
not yuu: riddle got dethroned and i'm not even happy
not yuu: it's the absolute WORST AT THE DORM!
not yuu: you better turn back rn and get away from ‘labyul coz it’s getting run by a kid
not deuce: BACK INTO THAT DEATH MOB? no thanks
not ace: yuu brace up, cater texted that the new boss is on his way to you
not yuu: F for yuu
not ace: F
not deuce: F u
what you expect to be the final boss of your life, you guess from the approaching pairs of footsteps nearing your defeated form sprawled across the flecks of grass and still heaving comes in a surprising form of softness, and youth.
“mada.”
the blueness of the sky is shadowed by a tiny little head peering over your head. you’re startled by the tuff of red hair, and familiar pair of eyes which was strange, considering you have never seen this kid in your life. this was the new queen of heartlsabyul? you thought incredulously, since when were kids allowed in nrc…?
the thought was a breeding ground to raise the most evil person on the planet, considering the equally as evil people in night raven.
out of habit from the familiar chubby, round face you blurted: “riddle?”
the child blinked before they shook your head. “I am not papa.” their lips twitched into a small smile directed to you. if taken a closure look, this child’s resemblance with riddle really is uncanny. from the hair, even to a small golden crown sitting primly on the middle of their head. “mada, I am glad I found you. I have not seen papa yet.”
was this season 5 of stranger things?
they straightened. attention straying from you as you glanced to the other pairs of legs, whom you put a face to quickly. trey and cater both cast you a look of exasperation and pity.
then done like a true riddle–their face does a complete 360 and curls into anger as they stared off inside the maze. “all of you!” the tiny child rages with a concerning… change of color around their cute face, fingers pointed accusingly. how can a child be so horrifyingly scary?
the two third years do not mirror your confusion as you sat up, following the kid’s gaze to the archway where a myriad of thundering footsteps almost have you scampering away if not for them laying a small hand on your shoulder and somehow managing to ground you to stay still.
whose kid is this? you looked to cater who shakes his head uselessly
then to trey who wore a resigned smile.
the child’s brow twitches when the card soldiers lined up obediently. “I thought I had made it clear you not hurt mada.” they seethed, voice tilting in clear threat and a I demand you! sort of way. the card solider, three of hearts who had scared the living soul out of you trembled less subtle compared to the other guards.
of course this child had to get more terrifying by being observant, they caught the shiver of one soldier and narrowed their eyes. “ah, found the culprit. three of–”
trey shuffles forward with an awkward laugh that belies his usual laid back with–on his face is a twinge of concern as he raises his palms in a placating gesture. he steps forward three more times, sliding between the child and the line of soldiers but keeping the distance warily. “hey, kid. maybe we can discuss this with some tarts, and some tea?” he tries. children love sweets, right?
they keep their head level despite the astounding height difference. “I told you, uncle trey! being called ‘kid’ is disorderly! It's alice!” still, despite the brief protest their eyes sparkled with interest at the notion, even if they seemed a bit embarrassed to admit it. “i’m not supposed to eat sweets on mondays.”
“huh.” cater mumbled before the thin line of his lips rose into a familiar grin. “as in, rule 102 of the queen?” he queries with a nervous slide of his fingers through his hair. he’s not so obvious to directly state that he’s tiptoeing around… alice but a bit of months knowing him, you can tell.
alice nods along. they no longer look as bothered as before, the card soldiers all slump their tense shoulders a little when alice shifts their piercing gaze from the three of hearts before settling onto cater, who they offer a brief nod of agreement before returning back to trey.
well, a kid is a kid.
“but i can eat sweets on tuesdays.” they added hastily. like they don’t want the notion of trey’s treats slipping from their fingers but that would be strange, if the look of confusion you three share with each other you would have thought trey had initially baked for alice based off the tone of wistfulness in their tone.
trey smiles at them. “tomorrow it is.” reassured by their sheepish innocence he stops in front of them and grasps their shoulders, turning them away from the stiff soldiers. alice spares a brief glance at them. “what about these rule breakers?”
you stood up fully. “uh, don’t worry, they didn’t do anything wrong. i ran for too long.” you supplied in defense. if anything , a resemblance to riddle of all people meant that they could have the head offing in their blood. you did not want to stick around to find out, neither did cater.
alice considers you for a moment with a small sparkle in their eyes, with a wave of the small wand that maternalized in their hand, the soldiers fade into glittering spots of gold. only then do they let trey lead them back to the main pathway towards the dormitory of heartslabyul.
you fall into step behind cater who probably sees the question in your eyes so he lowers his voice discreetly, glancing at the back of trey who keeps the child’s bay attention so they don’t notice you two slowing down a little. nonetheless, still walking.
“that was little alice’s unique magic.” he says to you with a shrug, sighing after a glance at the former’s small, regal form. “pretty overpowered… kind of like my split card but less cute, and more dangerous.”
he winked, you frowned.
in front of you two, alice seems tame in comparison to the subtle bribing of trey questioning about their favorite sweets as you all finally reached the nearing entrance of the main dormitory
“where’s riddle?” you questioned.
he pursed his lips, navigating though the fountain in front of the dorm. “last i know, he went out early to campus cause of a meeting with his club for the upcoming NRC tour festival…”
oh, right. I have not found papa. alice’s voice echoes in your mind, so you echo the question that appears in your mind right after the memory. “alice called riddle ‘papa’ which i’m pretty sure is a term for a parent…” you trailed off. riddle seemed to be the least likely person to have a secret love child of some sorts, he seemed like he had most of his life planned out.
if riddle bent over backwards for his rules then he wouldn’t stray from the path he had set.
there’s a flash of interest in cater’s eyes, it was already there before, just dwindled. you watch it spark to life. akin to lighting some sort of fire within the guy, a gossipmonger at heart as he leaned in eagerly just as you both trudged up the stairs to the front doors who opened politely, and closed behind you as you walked in the main hall of heartslabyul.
“they look, and act like riddle!” he chuckles. “imagine our shock when alice popped up straight out of nowhere with an army at their beck and call.” cater clutched onto his arms, and shivered. you leaned away when he reaches his arms out to you in a teasing manner.
he adds. not at all offended by the way you scrunch your face at his ‘affections’. “they seem to listen to you though. like someone.”
you only regard him with an impassive raise of your brows. “i don't think so. riddle doesn’t listen to anyone. much less me.” befuddled by the mere idea, you scoffed. in all your magic-less glory, the best thing you might have achieved here in this other dimension was having the ability to wake leona kingscholar up from one of his power naps.
cater doesn’t seem to agree. only sighing at you from what it seems to be an of course. “only you can be so oblivious to the chaos you leave behind.” he says in response, making an exaggerated show of peering behind your shoulder and widening his eyes in feigned shock.
you humor him as you turned your head. the scene of the main entrance of the dormitory was the only answer to your eyes as you both walked into the living room–where little alice sits alone. you caught a glimpse of trey’s dark hair as he disappeared into the kitchen, most likely going off to make her a treat.
vaguely unsure if the male had heard him, cater calls out a “make us some too!”
“not my fault the students here are so… unstable.” you remarked with a roll of your eyes. remembering the overblots to be the most plausible reference to the chaos cater was talking about as you begrudgingly sat down on the couch and reeled in any other remarks for the child in the room.
who was now shuffling closer to your seated frame even if they thought they were being subtle in the movement.
what was two seats in the space between you and alice eventually became none at all, as they settled beside you and peered up with innocent eyes.
you tilted your head at them, alice copies the movement.
then to the other side.
they mirror the lull of your head.
“besides those.” cater cleared his throat after a bewildered glance at the child. “what’s more impressive is that you’re still here, yuu-yuu. night raven is like… a pack of wolves trying to run you off crying, and you? you’re a very weird sheep.”
still a bit enraptured on this child, you replied without your stare wavering from the roundness of alice’s cheek as you reached up to pinch it. to yours, and cater’s surprise. their previous cute ferociousness is not present at all as they leaned against the warmth as though instinctive. “i didn’t do anything.”
you don’t entertain the accusing look in cater’s eyes.
“if that was you not trying to beast tame the school then i don’t know what’ll happen if you put in the effort.”
you both lapse into silence as cater–who seemed to sense the finality of the conversation lets it slip fully and instead, busies himself with the entertainments his phone provided. you redirect your full attention onto the elusive red-headed alice.
“so,” you started. “how did you end up here? must be a great feat if you were able to go past the barriers.”
alice curls their fingers within the fabric of your blazer, inspecting it as they reply softly. “i’m not sure, mada. i was just sleeping, and woke up in a garden. the hedgehogs showed me the way after i offered them a caterpillar.” they do not mention a bleary moment in their sleep where they curiously wondered how you and riddle came to be as they drifted off. “as pertaining by rule 210… if you are lost in a maze, give the hedgehogs an offering and they shall show you the way.”
you can’t help but let your mind drift over to riddle, who echoes the rules to be followed when mentioned.
your lips twitch into a smile, much to the delight of alice. “strange indeed. must have been scary.”
their eyes squinted. “i’m not scared.”
you chuckled and pinched their cheek. they pout.
“where are you from?” you ask instead, wanting to know more about the.. figurative alice from nowhere.
alice looks at you strangely.
“from the queendom of roses…” could they simply be a relative of riddle’s? you thought mindlessly. drawing your fingers through the surprising soft red locks who seemingly part eagerly for your touch. “with my mada, and my papa. sometimes my uncles visit.”
unsure of how to reply, you merely nod along. parting their hair by half and twisting it into a braid. “you called me mada.” you hummed.
“because you are my mada.”
she says like it’s the only thing that makes sense in her small world, not relinquishing her grip on your blazer but instead tugging at the wrists to expose the small slither of skin and hold onto it. clingy. you thought, deciding not to question it.
… was this your freaking kid?
the smell of strawberries wafts over the space of the living room alongside the ticking of the oven–momentarily taking both alice, and cater’s attention. the latter stretches before standing to stride over to the source of the smell, no doubt requesting trey to change the taste once more.
alice’s eyes, like yours slid to your own. a bit shy in their demeanor as they clutched onto the skin of your wrist. “can i eat some of uncle’s tarts?” they queried under your breath, only meant for you alone. you felt a bit confused but nodded nonetheless.
their lips twitched into an eager smile before it settles into a more controlled look of impassiveness.
that was adorable. you thought, unable to resist leaning down to scoop them into your arms as you stood. alice makes a sound of brief surprise before their arms loop around your neck. they sat pliantly still as you walked over to follow cater inside the kitchen, catching a glimpse of your scent that they sought for, so alice nuzzles their face into the warm pulse on your neck.
trey glances up from the animated retelling of cater about the crazy day. “new responsibility?” he wore a humored smile, apron long discarded and folded over the handle of the oven for the meantime.
if riddle saw this, he would not believe it no matter how intelligent he was. trey deduced.
he gestures to the tray set on the counter. “there’s frosted strawberries, blueberry cornmeal, and the good old mont blanc since i got left over ingredients from the last unbirthday party.”
alice feels the shift of your head as you glanced down at them, they don’t remove their head from the crevice of your neck for a moment and meets your eyes with a raise of their own. “frosted strawberries, please.”
“good choice, little alice.” cater comments.
“careful, it’s hot.” trey chided gently as he watched you pick up one of them, drawing it near alice’s waiting hunger as they tilted their head up from your shoulder. they took a small bite at the corners of the tart, smiling at the taste and only wider when you wiped remnants of crumbs around the edges of their mouth.
alice chews, and swallows before they spoke again. their eyes gleaming with admiration as they stared at trey. “it’s always the yummiest when it’s fresh out the oven.” they recited.
trey blinks.
“you’re a bright one.” he remarked, ruffling their hair when he drew near. “don’t tell anyone about the wicked secret ‘round the kitchen, all right?”
they nodded vigorously. “thank you, uncle..” they spewed politely, but evidently genuine.
cater munches from the other end of the counter. “we gotta protect alice,” he chuckled, eyes crinkling as he pointed his phone to you, tapping to snap a picture of the scene despite your warning stare. “too nice for the vultures we call students here.”
“you might be right.” trey shook his head, and you nodded mutely. more absorbed into letting them take bite by bite into the tart until it was about finished halfway. only then do you lay it back on the tray. how much sweets was ideal for a child to take anyway? regardless of you deeming it as enough, alice stays quiet and does not complain.
if they wanted more, you wouldn’t know.
“later.” you promised, leaning back when you were satisfied with their prim appearance. a pat of their hair to smooth down trey’s earlier disruption.
“later..” alice echoed.
a resident third year enters the kitchen. only to pause in their tracks and back away.
“domesticity is really the enemy of the students here.” cater sniffed, earning a chuckle from trey who found the comment funny. “imagine being happy, being broody and emotional are the real requirements to get admitted.”
cater finishes his snack with a pleased hum, and a grateful nod to trey. “by the way i messaged adeuce, sent them to stall dorm leader from going back as long as the dorm was… kind of in a wre–predicament.” he cleared his throat, casting a brief glance at alice to spot if they had taken offence to his almost uttered word.
“so now they’re en-route?” trey guessed, transferring the leftover tarts to a glass bowl. leaving the tray in the sink to wash for later. cater nods in response, typing on his phone with one hand. likely in cahoots with the two right now. “told them the coast was clear! no more trampling soldiers scampering around.”
trey eyed him. “what about the–”
just then, whatever trey was going to comment in rebuttal of cater’s easy reassurance was promptly interrupted by new individuals peeking inside. ace, and deuce poked their heads from the corner. as if trying to ascertain the danger level of whatever may be inside.
ace rougly nudges deuce when he spots you with a child in arms. for two people insisting on their unique, varying selfs. they mirror each other’s look of bewilderment as though their brain cells crackled and connected into a singular one. “what the seven?” ace mouthed.
you all do not notice the look of familiarity on alice’s face.
nor the brightening when riddle strides in with a petulant huff,
if riddle thought strangely, or disapproved of the two’s behavior then he wouldn’t have had the chance to comment on it before he was leveling trey with a sharp, inquisitive stare. “i would like a very good explanation as to why my hedges have been mangled to the ground.” his eye twitches with the effort of containing irritation. “three hours i’ve been gone. three! and when i enter heartslabyul the first thing i see is devastation upon my gardens!”
perhaps emotionally, riddle cried out in the last sentence.
even though such an expression should have frightened a child to some degree, alice relaxes in your arms but their face clouds in shame at his voice.
riddle whirls back to the other two lingering by the doorway who both flinches imperceptibly–cater tries to intercept with a nervous chuckle but is only met with a steely don’t even start! “ace, and deuce have me running around the school. saying something about yuu getting kidnapped by those.. vermin excuses of… students from octavinelle!" riddle seethed, breathing still a bit labored as favor of his statement about running around.
“dorm leader!” ace stood straight stiffly.
oh, did he just come from a frantic search in octavinelle?
“i even had to threaten collaring azul who i thought was lying about yuu.” with a deep intake of air, riddle breathes out and pinches the bridge of his nose, collecting his temper. much to the chagrin of deuce.
“we apologize.” deuce added sadly.
cater feigns ignorance by looking away but it’s trey’s look that has him adding to the defense of the two, rather than using the opportunity to scamper away with his head in tact. “ahem… we had these two keep you busy. so don’t be too harsh on them, riddle. us upperclassmen will take responsibility.”
a nod of agreement from trey gets riddle quiet.
the former tilts his chin to you. “yuu is fine, they’re right here.”
like he hadn’t even noticed before (he really didn’t), riddle’s head snaps to you immediately. his eyes would have been stuck to you, prodding for a valid explanation to your ignorance to his angry calls but instead, settles on the bundle in your arms.
“who…” a blink. “why in the world do you have a child! they are not welcome on school grounds! especially this time in the school year–.” riddle sputtered, instinctively sauntering over to take a closer look at alice who only stared without an inch of fear.
“papa.” they mumbled, voice measured but still echoing in the now quiet kitchen.
ace leapt up to your side. “that’s not right!” he gasped, squinting dangerously at riddle. any traces of earlier mortification gave way to whatever emotion he’s got on his face. “how could you sully yuu! they’re not a babysitter for your kid!”
“what?” riddle seethed, head flicking from ace, to you, then to alice.
despite a look of great reluctance, deuce nods from the doorway still. mumbling to himself. “dorm… dorm leader has a child…”
you vaguely remember trey offering the dazed guy a glass of water.
“unconfirmed earlier, confirmed now.” cater adds unhelpfully to the blazing fire of riddle’s rising anger.
riddle’s teeth grind together, jaw clenching as his fingers tightened into a fist. it was more of one his attempts at calming down rather than preparation for a physical alteration. “I did no such–!”
“don’t be mad at mada.” alice reaches for him, tugging at his blazer which surprisingly, quells the reddening of his face. now, he just looks a bit confused.
alice turns their head slightly. “mada, you can calm down papa.”
deuce paused before dropping to the ground.
“AH! he’s dead. this is why you don’t betray us by keeping secrets, yuu!”
“uh oh… trey help me with deuce… wait, should we just leave him? i mean, he’ll be just fine here, right?”
“... just take the other arm, cater.”
all the way back to the living room, riddle’s face remained tinged with warmth. alice, while reluctant to part with your embrace, seemed wholly pleased to stay by the other red-heads' side. insisting you sit next to him when you moved to sit by your two friends.
you obliged them despite riddle’s interest with the carpet.
the couch dipped at the weight of another. even so, the non-verbal conversation between alice, and riddle continued. the former pressed their lips together thinly, seemingly assessing the… youthfulness of the latter. they aren’t so used to this kind of look from him.
cater flinched, and look away from the flash of his phone. he elbows a dazed deuce.
“so,” ace cleared his throat, blinking his still wide eyes. “who the heck is this kid?!”
“language.” riddle chided sharply. though softened from its usual end even he isn’t so sure why it is from the mere presence of alice alone.
“rule 13, always present yourself with appropriate language.”
“always present yourself with appropriate language.” alice repeated.
riddle squinted at a relaxed alice, who tilts their head as if to ask ‘what?’.
“genetics is crazy. what’s next, the kid beheads us too?” ace points between the two.
alice shrugged. “only if you break the rules.”
“i do not have a child!” riddle protested.
“i am your child.” replied alice.
“apparently this one’s our kid.” you agreed begrudgingly.
riddle stares at you with a mixture of disbelief, and confusion.
darting between you and the kid like they're gonna start collating him in all his glory! sure, alice had red hair like him but quite a lot of people in the island have it too besides his relatives. the idea of… of him and you is just so out of this world that he can't wrap his head around it.
you? you who he hadn't paid attention to when you arrived at the ceremony? the very first person in that event that broke the rules? you, the very fading into the background student whom he believed to be a bad influence to his students ace, and deuce?
you he had almost hurt beyond repair at the bursting of his control so tightly held in his hands?
the brief skip of his heart when your eyes meet over the head of alice is enough to send blood rushing to his head, coloring it with his signature red whose warmth doesn't feel like the usual simmering anger he struggles to keep submerged. if anything, this feeling is practically leaping out the water and baring his face to everyone.
riddle does not look away. managing a look of what he tries to name as conviction but easily crumbles to fluster.
then the idea wasn't so bad considering this young child has proved to be raised dutifully, correctly without any worries of what he used to be burdened with as a child.
it gives way to curiosity.
despite his incredulously, riddle queries. “the gardens.” he starts with a measured narrow to his eyes, not too intense to possibly upset this.. future child of his whose eyes are strikingly familiar enough to halt the normal circulation of his heart once more for half a second. “were you responsible for the destruction of some hedges I've come across?”
alice shrinks into themselves. “i'm sorry papa.” they pursed their lips, voice genuine by the lower tilt. “i thought i could use my card soldiers to look for you, and mada. you told me about this place called heartslabyul before?”
“i have?” riddle blinks. the idea isn't too bizarre, it's only natural to think back on such things.
they nodded. “yes, papa. you talk about it a lot on our friday’s. about how it looked, how you were as it's dorm leader…” alice peeks a glance at you. “and your parties with mada.”
“unbirthday parties.” trey corrects. “sometimes birthday parties if it really is someone's birthday.”
ace perks up. “let me tell you then! from first hand experience!” he blanched. like opening light about his own struggles in heartlsabyul magically meant the truth to riddle’s own kid. “labyul is really strict on rules. you know on my first day, I ate a tart and—”
deuce stirred slightly.
at riddle’s glare, ace visibly wilts to which cater snaps a picture with snickers. “I mean… the tart was really good, made by riddle and all…” he sweatdropped.
“you shouldn't eat a tart that is not made by you.” alice replied thoughtfully. riddle can't resist a light smile at her words, feeling a sense of accomplishment as he nodded along. his hand hovers for a moment before it pats down on their hair. “that's right. I must have taught you well.”
you absentmindedly patted their head, taking turns with riddle to do so while expertly avoiding his gaze. “you said friday though, why?”
“on friday’s we don’t go out.” alice says.
“that isn’t a rule by the queen of hearts.” riddle points out.
“you made that rule papa.” they replied innocently. “in our home, so we get to spend time together as a family.”
silence reigns.
“wow.” you cough. sparing riddle an approving glance. that… sounded nice… domestic, and nice. you supposed even as an adult riddle would still have some sort of grip on rules, considering he grew up with them, it helped him live.
and now rules he shaped helped him live with alice, and you apparently.
tick.
tock.
tick.
tock.
alice peers down at the watch they pull out from under their little adorable coat, oblivious to the stunned silence they left behind. hesitantly, they place a hand on your knee, legs swinging as they rest the other on riddle’s. “mada.” they smiled, this time widely. “papa. I gotta go.”
“what?” riddle's eyes widened. “you haven't finished your tart yet.”
“it's okay. I already ate a tart earlier, papa.”
“you can eat another, just this time. if you want.” he insisted, strangely worried.
cater raises his hand. “can I?”
riddle disagrees immediately. “no.”
muttering something about favoritism, cater looked away with a long sigh.
riddle's eyes lingered on the roundness of alice's face. from the shape, to the more detailed parts of their features. eyes, your eyes. the lushness of their hair, the soft curve of their lips tilted with innocence sends an unexpected grip in his heart, like it's heart stopping.
gosh. his heart just stopped. would he really have his own alice? his eyes darted to you. with you?
alice huffed lightly, skin glimmering lightly as their shade slowly grew transculent and faded with each blink of your eyes. “I can always eat papa's tarts. they're so delicious.”
“don't use too much magic.” riddle scolded with a crease in his brows.
you add. “don't anger riddle too much.”
“please eat his tarts.” ace encouraged.
trey shot him a look. “don't teach alice bad things.” he sighed, glancing at said child with a smile. “I'll teach you how to make your own tarts, ask uh… future me?”
cater, not wanting to be outdone quickly perked up. “as a future magicam star, I'll make you one too. little alice!” he added, self assured of his future fame.
when it all settles, all that remains is a space between you and riddle that feels too little than vast. and a remainder of your future.
“atleast we know what name we'll choose.” you can't resist but tease. riddle does not blow up like you would have thought from your remark, only sparing you a look of feigned annoyance with warming ears that doesn't support the idea of his irritation.
he resigns to a small nod. “I am assured they are taught well.”
ace glances between you, and riddle. “I miss alice already. riddle seemed a lot more lenient with them around. you think they got embarrassing stories from the future?” he comments off-handedly, leaning back against the couch and blowing on the fringe over his forehead. “when are you guys gonna make an alice? please make one now.”
cater whistles out of there.
trey shakes his head.
deuce–still passed out is thankfully considered by trey, who dragged his limp body with a nod of goodluck to ace.
you waved at ace. F indeed.
wait! don't leave me, upperclassman! ace cried in his mind, feeling the panic splinter his state of mind.
“ACE!” riddle gritted his teeth. “i'll hand down my sentence, the verdict comes afterwards–”
ace paled.
“off with your head–!”
trivia
alice’s name is very much inspired by alice from the one and only: “alice in wonderland”.
their unique magic is called: under my decree which is simply being able to summon card soldiers, and command them at their will! (in this case, after being sent to a maze and finding their way out thanks to the hedgehog. alice was able to discern that this was heartlsabyul, and figured they might be able to find their parents here, hence, why they used their magic.)
alice is written to be a well-behaved 8 year old.
the watch is a nod to my previous commissioned work who also dealt with the concept of time travelling and related to going back (ha, ha).
alice woke up by the sound of a clock ticking, and knew that hearing it again meant that their time was up.
the entire thing happened due to alice helping untangle a fae who happened to get stuck in their gardens at the backyard while they were looking for a hedgehog that had not yet eaten (spoiler: hedgehog was hiding in a small crack under the tree) the same fae visited them at night whilst sleeping and granted them a dream of whatever they wanted to wish. alice, feeling swayed by the magic despite being not aware made a wish to fulfill it.
boom! baby rosehearts in your faces!
alice woke up and immediately said young riddle was funnily shy to yuu. much to the confusion of actual current riddle!
their favorite tart is: anything with strawberries, like riddle.
rule 13, and rule 102 are entirely fictional and made up by me… for plot purposes…
not deuce = is actually yuu
not yuu = is actually ace
not ace = is actually deuce
deuce been sleeping for the entire time lol.
ace got roped into fixing the gardens with the collar on #thatswhatyouget
riddle invites you to study for the nearing quiz season the following day.

thinking about soccer player!ellie and cheerleader!reader…
this is part of my soccer player!ellie and cheerleader!reader series!! go check it out!
before dating her...
soccer player!ellie who refuses to admit she has a crush, so she treats you like you’re annoying. always rolls her eyes when you wave at her from across campus, but secretly she’s dying inside when you do.
soccer player!ellie who has your whole cheer routine memorized. she watches you during warm-ups instead of listening to her coach. if someone points it out, she pretends to be looking at the scoreboard.
soccer player!ellie who doesn't follow you on instagram but has to check at least once a day if you posted something new. absolutely stalks your profile at midnight like it's her own job.
soccer player!ellie who ignores you on campus, but you once dropped your lip gloss outside the gym, and she picked it up and kept it. she doesn’t know why. itlives in the bottom of her backpack like a cursed object.
soccer player!ellie who played her worst game of the season the only day you missed it. she was too busy trying to look for you on the benches, and once she assumed you weren't there, the game had lost its purpose.
soccer player!ellie who acts extra cocky whenever you’re watching practice. suddenly she’s doing trick shots, shirt half-tucked, everything you can imagine.
soccer player!ellie who denies knowing anything about your cheer competitions but saw your team was ranked online and checked the score updates live.
soccer player!ellie who always pretends not to notice you at parties, but the second someone flirts with you, she’s watching like a hawk from across the room, jaw clenched, drink untouched. jesse’s like “just go home before you kill someone.”
soccer player!ellie who starts arriving early to practice just to “warm up,” but really it’s because she knows that’s when your team rehearses stunts on the field. she says it’s the only time it isn’t crowded. dina doesn’t believe her.
soccer player!ellie who went absolutely feral during an away game when a girl on the other team said you looked good in red. she got a yellow card five minutes later for a reckless slide. she doesn't regret it, tho.
once you're dating...
soccer player!ellie who wears your hairband like it's her personal bracelet by now. she even told you once it was her lucky charm.
soccer player!ellie who says PDA is cringe, but lets you wear her jersey to games and gets SO smug when people notice.
soccer player!ellie who will fight if anyone says your routine looked sloppy. she knows every beat and claps the loudest when you finish.
soccer player!ellie who starts doing little things like carrying your bag, bringing you water, or showing up outside practice with snacks.
soccer player!ellie who insists she’s not the romantic type, but gives you her medal the day they win regionals. doesn’t say a word. just hangs it on your neck and walks off blushing.
soccer player!ellie who starts “jokingly” calling you babe in front of people. no one thinks it’s a joke.
soccer player!ellie who dedicates goals to you by making a subtle heart shape with her fingers when you’re not looking. the team knows. the crowd knows. you still pretend not to notice.
soccer player!ellie who refuses to kiss you before games because “it’s distracting.” but if you don’t show up to wish her luck, she texts you in a panic like:
ellie: you forgot ellie: i need my good luck kiss ellie: where r u
soccer player!ellie who has your cheer bows in her room, hidden in her sock drawer. and you don’t even remember giving them to her.
soccer player!ellie who lets you do face paint for her before every home game, even though she complains the whole time:
“you’re doing too much—wait, why is there glitter on my cheek?” “shut up, you look cute.”
soccer player!ellie who scored the final goal from the regionals, and lifted her shirt to expose your initial marked on her abs. let’s say both of you were very busy after the game, because you needed to show her how much you loved the detail.
soccer player!ellie who keeps little trinkets of yours—a charm that fell off your bag, a broken hair clip, a scribbled note you tossed. they’re all in a shoebox under her bed.
soccer player!ellie who panics when you’re sad and does the most insane things to cheer you up, like drawing a comic of you two fighting crime as “captain pom-pom and goal queen.” it’s awful. you love it.
soccer player!ellie who won’t let anyone trash-talk you, even her own teammates. one girl called your cheer routine extra, and ellie benched her with a slide tackle the next day. oops!
soccer player!ellie who gets in trouble for being late to practice because she was walking you to class, carrying your pom-poms for you.
soccer player!ellie who loves when you wear her hoodie with her name after games, especially when you’re tired and clingy. she swears you’ve never looked prettier.
soccer player!ellie who helps you stretch before your performances, getting way too flustered when you sit on her lap mid-stretch and act like it's nothing.
soccer player!ellie who walks around with glitter on her face from hugging you, completely unaware, but looking smug about it.
soccer player!ellie who gets irrationally jealous when you cheer for other teams—even during friendlies.
“why were you clapping so hard for them, huh?” “ellie, i’m supposed to do it. you know i'm not your personal cheerleader, right?”
she audibly gasps after that like you had just insulted her personally.

you're sat in sukuna's lap, bum seated on his right leg, legs dangling off his left. his right arm is wrapped around your waist, letting you play with his hand.
"kuna."
"yeah?"
"why do you wear rings?" you ask, hands fiddling with sukuna's right-hand, tips of your fingers tapping on the rings on his fingers. he looks at you, yawning before staring— "iunno. i like 'em i guess. it's like askin' ya why you wear bracelets—"
you perk your head up to his, legs wiggling in his lap. "i wear them 'cause they cute." you smile, and he just stares— blinks twice, then grins, his hand reaching on the table to set down the blunt in his hand (after taking one last hit), he then grabs onto the pink robe he had gotten for you.
"so why ya think i wear rings?" you giggle as he slids his hand up your thigh, tickling you.
" 'cause theyyyy,, cute?—" you pout when he rolls his eyes, shaking his head then licking at his lip piercing— " nah, it's cause you like 'em."

katsuki doesn't know what to do in a situation like this. he's only got two floors left to ask you for your name, number, favorite food, favorite og hero, hobbies, profession and- oh fuck he's just got one floor now. so he doesn't think, because that's gonna cost him another floor. "this your son?" he says, bouncing the happy little guy in his arms. and he's as shocked as you are. because how was that not the first question that popped into his head.
so with a scoff, you cross your arms and look up at the giant man, "that's my nephew." and you're rolling your eyes at him before telling him you've just graduated from university. and maybe you're over analysing but you can feel him sigh. "oh...nice. uh, what course-" "top floor." he grumbles about not even getting to know your name under his breath, and just says a little "that's me." as he puts the kid down. he ruffles his head and tells him to be good with one foot out the door, when the little boy yells, "dynamight!!" his little feet run towards katsuki and he gestures him to crouch down. katsuki furrows his eyebrows and obliges, a smile forming on his face when he hears what the boy softly whispers in his ear, "her name's y/n."

being near each other (pt 2)

bob reynolds/sentry x reader | 3,791 words | angst/fluff | gn! reader
THUNDERBOLTS* SPOILERS
tw: panic attacks, swearing, brief mentions of sex
both you and bob are still pretty bad at feelings
a/n: i was not expecting the first part of this to blow up as much as it did, so i decided to not clean my room and write an even longer sequel. thank you @scarlett-witchh for suggesting for a sequel! shoutout to lauren for the starbucks orders <3
link to part one!
___
You had finally begun to find some peace with your roommates. While the clean-up from last month’s “incident” had fully exhausted you, the established routine was comforting, not to mention you had finally embraced your feelings for Bob, well as much as you could. Everyday started to feel like paradise, you practically skipped around the base every morning, romantically sighing through your meetings and missions. Even as you walked into the meeting room with a knife soaring past your face, nothing could have dampened your mood.
“Okay, okay, I have all of your drinks!” You yelled, breaking up the chaos in front of you.
All your teammates froze in their exact positions and slowly turned their heads toward you.
Walker was ducking in front of you with his hands over his head. Yelena’s arm was still outstretched from throwing the kitchen knife, which was now firmly planted in the wall behind you. Alexei and Bucky each had an arm reaching towards holding Yelena back, while Ava was clearly encouraging the behavior. The last person who caught your attention was Bob, seated calmly in the corner, nose in a self-help book, clearly having only looked up at your entrance over the commotion of the fight. As your teammates processed your statement, they all sat down in their respective seats, the previous argument forgotten for caffeine.
“First an iced americano for John, even though I’m certain you don’t actually like it and drink it only for the name,” you said as you handed out the first drink.
Walker attempted to defend himself, but you had already moved on to the next drink in the tray, you cautiously balanced.
“Next, I have God only knows what is in this for Alexei, with approximately fifteen pumps of some kind of syrups in it,” you placed the drink down, its vibrant red color shocked even the barista.
“It is my new sponsored drink!” Alexei responded. “Now known as the Red Drink.”
“Is that meant to be a play on the Pink Drink because I think you’re going to have more copyrights on your hands,” Yelena sighed.
“No, not Pink Drink at all!” He bellowed. “It is my drink that will gain many followers on the Instagram.”
You decided to keep going and ignore him. “Next, I have a hazelnut shaken espresso for Yelena.”
“Thank you,” she immediately sipped the drink, and you watched as her shoulders visibly relaxed.
“Next, an iced matcha latte for Ava,” you handed her the drink as you rounded the table, and she nodded her thanks.
“A black coffee for Bucky, and finally the second to worst drink here, a vanilla bean frap with six shots of espresso, and extra whipped cream for Bob.” You handed the last two their drinks, as you placed yours down on the table. As you handed Bob the drink, your fingers brushed for just a moment, and you felt the heat pull up your face.
You cleared your throat as you attempted to will the blush away, “now, does someone want to explain to me why a stray knife almost landed in my carotid artery on my way in from picking up coffee for all of you?”
You nestled into your seat, next to Bob of course, and pulled your legs up towards your chest. He smiled at you, his cheeks warm as well.
“It would have hit you in the ear at best, you’re giving Yelena too much credit,” Walker started to instigate the room again.
“Oh, like you would have better aim with two idiots trying to pull you off the table,” Yelena bit back.
“Enough you two,” Bucky sighed.
His sighs resembled more of an exhausted father as the days living in the tower went on. The meeting continued on, not without the occasional quip from Yelena or Walker about the argument from before, but you didn’t particularly care anymore. Your eyes moved softly to the side of Bob’s face. His lips were slightly parted as his finger guided his eyes across the lines of the text of his book. Ever since moving in, Bob gained a steady collection of self-help books in an attempt to learn to better live with the Void. His right hand laid flat on the table as he balanced the book on the table, and you found your hand subconsciously reaching to hold his. As you laid your hand on top of his, his hand pulled away to the book, and didn’t return the table. You snapped your head to the side, brows tight as you tried to question what just happened. Bob’s eyes remained steady on the book, though you could tell he wasn’t focused on the words anymore as his grip tightened on the book.
The two of you had spent the past four weeks in a happy bliss, spending soft moments out of missions together. You had frequent movie nights between either one of your rooms, watching anything from shitty action movies to even shittier rom coms but just getting to spend time together made it all worth it. You had even begun to try to teach him how to cook, just simple things so he could survive a bit better without someone on the team watching over him as closely. He was doing so incredibly lately, with only one appearance from the Void since the incident last week, although he had yet to try to use his newfound powers regularly.
His actions just then confused you, sure you two were doing all the cheesy couple things you had learned to follow, but you had been so careful to avoid any unnecessary touching, besides the regular hand holding, since you could tell that it scared him. Holding hands now had been standard practice between the two of you, even in front of the team, all of whom either didn’t care enough to say anything, or the more likely answer was they all had their own problems enough to not bother either of you. Walker and Alexei knew something, since it was their genius ideas to rig the mission chart to even start your “relationship” with Bob, but you weren’t really clear on how many “guys’ nights” actually happened regularly. You didn’t really have a relationship with Yelena or Ava to talk to them about this, you were cordial sure, but you’re not sure if gossiping about boy problems was the next step in the friendship.
Yet now, fear began to creep in the corners of your mind, if Bob didn’t want to hold your hand anymore was there something wrong? You had made it very clear you were willing to go at his pace, especially since he had just served as an experiment, and forcibly given powers that no one really understood. Despite that, it had been a month of comfortable hand holding, and the occasional head on a shoulder. You cursed your inability to discuss emotions, maybe that girls’ night would be the solution to your problems, although remembering the moment you walked into with Yelena throwing knives and Ava encouraging her, maybe they weren’t the ones to go to for advice.
Sound interrupted your downward spiral as the meeting was clearly adjourned and you missed all of the content that may or may not prove important later, although missions for the greater good were not in your interest of your greater good right now. Bob had stood faster than you could process and scurried out of the room, as opposed to his normal joyful gait around the tower.
“What was that?” Yelena’s voice broke through the silence, and it was clearly pointed at you.
She then proceeded to clear her throat loudly.
“Oh shit right! Uh, I need help with something; Bucky, Alexei, and Ava, why don’t you come help me with this thing?” Walker’s voice was higher than normal, and as you looked at him you swore you could see pen marks all over his hand.
All of them poured out of the room with a level of speed that made you a tad bit uncomfortable, as Yelena’s eyebrows raised, reposing the question.
“What was what?” You asked incredulously.
“That, little…thing,” Yelena moved towards you, sitting down in the chair next to you.
“What? Oh, that,” you replied, realizing you were right, Yelena was probably not the person to go for advice on this.
“You two are like so happy, and now it’s weird, and now it’s all of our problems,” she continued.
“Well, that’s not my fault,” you said, immediately defending your actions.
“I’m not saying it’s anyone’s fault,” she sighed, clearly trying a different approach “but you two are making less kissy faces at each other lately and it’s bringing the mood down.” “I don’t make kissy faces!” You shot back.
“You absolutely do, but the two of you need to figure it out,” she said, standing.
“Maybe just fuck already?” Walker’s voice came through the doorway, as he was comically yanked away.
You heard the sound of Alexei loudly hushing him, and the sound of a slap. Clearly, the other team members were eavesdropping.
“Did you all just stage an intervention for me?” You asked.
“Listen, as much as Walker is an idiot,” Yelena’s voice raised for the last part, clearly addressing the audience beyond the doorway. “You two are cute little idiots and Bob’s been pouting about something, so figure it out.”
“You act as if it’s just simple enough of asking him what’s wrong!” You stood.
“It is?” She responded, turning back to you.
“It totally is not!” You answered.
“It totally is!” Walker’s voice shot back from the doorway, as you heard a slam and his groan as someone most likely hit him with something. Part of you was hoping it was Ava, helping Yelena get revenge from before.
“Shut up Walker, your wife left you, you don’t know shit about relationships!” Yelena’s voice peaked with the anger from before as she stormed out of the meeting room to the sound of your sigh.
You continued to sigh and stomp a bit as you exited through one of the side doors, hearing a louder clamor as the fight from before was clearly continuing in the background. Your feet carried you subconsciously to Bob’s door, the sound of music softly playing in his room. You knocked once, softly against the door, part of you hoping that he wasn’t going to answer to save you the stress of addressing your problems right now. You could totally walk away and shove them down, but if you learned anything in the past time with the team, shoving emotions down was, unfortunately, not the correct answer to make them better.
Bob pulled the door open just a crack, and peaked through it. Shit, only he could make this look endearing and made your heart flutter.
“Can I come in?” You asked.
Bob hesitated for a moment, and looked down at his hands, then answered. “Sure.”
You walked into his room that was now completely repaired. No more broken furniture or bits of glass around the room. Just a soft melody playing off a speaker somewhere, with a few plants that you had gifted him to liven the room up. Despite literally only having the clothes on his back when the move-in process began, he had quickly acquired multitudes of knick knacks that covered the room. Even though the city was rebuilding and reopening from the Void’s takeover, you insisted on taking Bob to all the tourist parts to explore as your first “date,” although you struggled to call it that, and let’s just say you would never be able to say no to his face.
“What did you need?” Bob asked.
He had hung around the door, and continued to avoid your gaze.
“I should be the one asking you that,” you smiled, and stepped closer to him.
He sidestepped away from you, and moved past you further into his room. “I don’t need anything, everything’s great, why would I need something?” He asked, stumbling over his words.
“Considering that was your response, something is probably wrong,” you replied.
“I–” he started to speak, but he just let his mouth hang open and then closed it without finishing the thought.
“You can talk to me,” you started. “I thought we had been through this, Bob, we would talk to each other? Listen, if I’m too much for you or you don’t want to do this, I would rather just know, before I get too invested–”
“No! No,” Bob’s hands shook as he held them up to stop you. “It’s me.”
“What about you?” You asked.
“I’m afraid,” he said, softly, letting his arms fall and hang at his sides.
“Afraid?” you pushed.
He didn’t rely.
“Are you afraid of me?” You felt a painful lump rise to your throat, you knew who you were and your past, but part of you hoped that maybe he would see past that. See you for you, and not what you were forced to do in the past.
“Not you!” The look of shock on his face brought a second of comfort to you, and he moved closer to you. “I’m afraid of me. Well, not me, him, I guess? I’m not really clear on how to refer to us.”
You smiled softly, relieved. “Let’s agree on him, because I don’t think that it’s you.”
“Okay, him,” Bob agreed. “Last week, when he tried to make an appearance it was because, well, I don’t know how to say this without it being weird.”
“I can promise it’s probably not that weird,” you affirmed.
“I thought about kissing you and got really nervous and then it happened and now I’m afraid of being near you because you make me nervous because I like you a lot and I’m afraid of being a fuck up but if I’m not near you I’m even more afraid because you actually make me feel safe and I just feel like I’m doing this all wrong and I’m just word vomiting at this point so who knows if you’ve actually made sense of this,” he began to pace as he spoke and you could feel the energy in the room change as all the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
“Bob, stop,” you went to put your hands on his shoulders but he pulled away.
“And see! Because you’re such a nice and perfect person you try to help me and when you touch me, it’s going to happen again, and it’s going to be just like the kitchen, only this time you’re going to hate me for it. And then everyone is going to leave me and I’m going to alone again and –”
“Stop, you’re spiraling,” you grabbed his shoulders despite him previously trying to pull away, knowing that the contact would probably help him.
“I can’t stop! Everything you do makes me nervous,” he said, fear beginning to manifest in his eyes as the eerie silver of the Void.
“And you don’t think you make me nervous?” You asked.
“What?” He responded.
The seriousness of the question seemed to stop all of his thoughts in one moment.
“I’m so nervous around you all the time, but I still hang around you because I like you too. And even though I’m scared as shit everyday, I want to be better, and so I tell myself that being afraid is what lets me be near you in the first place, so I’m willing to be scared.” You smiled, as your hands began to rub up and down his arms, trying to soothe him.
“You’re scared too?” He asked, and you noticed the brightness in his eyes beginning to fade as they returned more to the color of the blue eyes that you’ve found comfort in everyday.
“Of course I’m scared!” You laughed. “I’m standing in front of one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, and not to mention you’re hot as shit and you actually like me, even though I suck and I’ve done so many shitty things, and you know about them, but you like me anyways.”
“You think I’m hot?” Bob asked, causing you to laugh in response, out of all the things you’ve told him tonight, that’s what he got from this?
“Yes, I think you’re really hot Bobby,” you smiled as one of your hands tucked his stubborn piece of hair behind his ear.
“Wow, ‘cause coming from you that’s like” he said, looking a bit star-gazed. “That’s like wow.”
You struggled to keep eye contact with him, you’ve always struggled to accept compliments, but with him compliments made you feel even warmer.
“So what do you want to do?” You asked, part of you fearing an answer that made your chest tighter.
“What do I want?” He asked, part of him looked surprised, as if this was one of the first times he was asked for his opinion on something.
“Yeah, do you want to keep trying this?” You felt so small under his gaze.
“Why wouldn’t I?” He asked in reply, feeling the shift as if he knew it was his turn to comfort you.
“I just, if you’re afraid, and it makes your powers go crazy, I don’t want to take the chance of hurting you,” you finally looked away from him, trying to fully pull away.
“I’m more worried about hurting you, and you’re worried about hurting me,” he laughed. “You were right by the way.”
“Right about what?” You replied, his laughter seeming out of place.
“That we’re bad at ‘this’ thing,” he referred to the same invisible thing from before.
“Yeah, we are bad at this,” you started to laugh too, letting yourself enjoy the moment.
“I don’t want to be afraid to touch you,” he whispered, as if admitting the words out loud would summon him. “I don’t want to be afraid to kiss you.”
“Then don’t be, or if you tell me, I’ll try to make it better,” you stepped closer to him.
“You always make it better,” Bob stepped closer, the distance between the two of you practically not existent a this point.
While there was a softness to the moment, both of your breathing was quick, but silent, the energy was really what pulled your attention to the distance between you. You could feel the electricity of the moment both metaphorically and literally as Bob’s powers began to physically draw energy towards him. You were afraid to speak, ruining the tender moment, the sounds of the music fading faster behind you. Taking a deep breath, you steeled your nerves, you didn’t care if you got burned, you knew what you wanted. You grabbed the sides of Bob’s face and guided him closer to you.
You smiled softly as your noses brushed, “I’m going to kiss you now.”
“Uh-huh,” Bob replied, eyes slightly glazed.
“Is that okay?” You confirmed.
“Please,” Bob whispered in confirmation.
Clearly, he didn’t care about the fear at that moment either. The moment your lips touched you finally knew what the power of a thousand suns felt like. It was entirely hot, but so soft, so entirely Bob. In this moment, you were so grateful that you had decided to stay home from that mission, because this snippet of your future made everything so worth it. Bob’s hands hovered over the sides of your face, then your shoulders, and then fell back down to his sides like he had no idea what to do with them. Without breaking the kiss, you pulled his hands towards you and placed one on your waist and another on your shoulder. You moved your hands back to the sides of his face. His lips seemed so unsure against yours, but so perfect.
When you pulled away, Bob’s eyes were wide and mouth was agape. The room was at least six degrees warmer than before you kissed, but even the room felt cool against your skin. You began to softly laugh and tuck his hair behind his ear. Even with your efforts the piece slid back out to infront of his eyes.
“How do you feel?” You asked softly, you knew that it was still Bob from his eyes, but wanted to ensure you weren’t about to face your past mistakes again, at least not right now.
“Good, good, I mean great, yeah great,” his words seemed to reflect the short circuiting of his brain.
“Okay, you can tell me if it wasn’t” you reassured.
There was a second of silence, where he nodded. You felt the worries that stuck with you since the meeting earlier began to melt away with the heat.
“I promise you I’ve kissed people before, I just–” Bob started and you laughed harder.
“What?” You replied, a laugh bubbling in your chest.
“I swear I’ve done this before, I just – It’s just – It’s just you,” he tried to verbalize his thoughts but he seemed so entirely lost.
It warmed your heart in a way you could never have put into words.
“I think you did perfectly,” you replied. “You never have to justify yourself to me y’know.”
“I know, I just feel like I totally blanked out ‘cause I did, and like my brain just sorta screamed for the entire time.” He said.
“I hope it was at least a good blank out,” your hands fell from the sides of his face moving to one on the back of his neck and the other on his shoulder.
“Oh yeah, it was good, you’re good, you’re perfect actually,” he stumbled through his words.
You began to fiddle with the hair that rested at the nape of his neck, while laughing at his words.
“Well I’m glad I beat all those other people you’ve kissed before,” you teased.
“Oh ten times better,” he genuinely assured you.
“Well then I hope you’re okay if I kissed you again,” you asked.
“Again?” He stuttered out as his eyes widened. He attempted to recover, “I mean, yeah, I’m cool with it.”
Your mouths met again with Bob’s meeting you in the middle, his hands still firmly planted where you placed them. Before you could really enjoy the moment, you heard a voice in the background.
“I told you Yelena! You owe me fifty bucks!” Walker’s voice was the very last thing you wanted to hear.
“They're literally not fucking Walker, they are fully clothed,” Yelena yelled back.
Although, once you turned around, the split lip and the beginnings of a black eye forming on his face told you that you didn’t really need to exact any revenge on him since Yelena seemed to have dealt with the problem before it began. While you wished that your roommates would find someone else to bother, since they ruined this really nice moment, you laughed, because you wouldn’t be here next to Bob if they didn’t feel the need to meddle.

WHEN- you store things inside your boobies
...very obviously fem reader lmao, you store things in the middle of your chest...
...lyney...xiao...itto...wanderer...
Lyney
You're showing lyney a card trick that learned.
But no matter how much he tries to figure out where you hid the card he just can't get it.
He never usually does this but he's just too curious!!
So he's been asking- no, begging for you to tell him how you did it and where you hid the card!
After much pleading and you repeating "a magician never reveals her secrets" you finally spill.
You tell him to watch carefully and he nods.
His eyes widen and his mouth drops open as he burns red.
You reach down your shirt and pull out a card from in between your boobes
"I- you uh..ah.." he's stuttering, not sure what would be an appropriate response to this.
You just laugh "see, this is why I said you can't do this trick, your tits are too small darlin"
"h-hey- making you blush is my job! Not the other way around!"
he's used to making snarky remarks or dirty jokes he can't believe he fell for this!
Xiao
Xiao recently gifted you some adeptus beads
They were meant to ward away evil spirits and demons and keep you safe when he's not around
However, he's noticed that he can't seem to find you wearing them around your neck, so he decided to ask you about it
"y/n where are you keeping the beads I gave you? I didn't give them to you just for you to leave them somewhere to collect dust."
He huffed offended you wouldn't keep the charm on you.
You already insisted on not calling his name when in trouble so you should at least keep the beads on you!
You just looked at him amused telling him you had them on you but he insisted you showed them to him, so you did.
Pulling down the neckline of your shirt you reached your hand in to grab said beaded necklace.
His mouth dropped once you showed it to him and his face bloomed "i- y-you..you have no respect for the adepti!" he vanished after yelling that likely to hide his blushing face, and his boner
Itto
Recently you've hid one of ittos little purple bugs right before his little match with some kid
He's frantically searching for said bug, insisting that he has to take that one or he won't win! Not that he will either way
"y/nnnnn! Are you sure you haven't seen my little bugger! I really need it!" he's whining like a little baby!
Feeling bad for him you finally relent telling him you might have an idea of where his beetle could be
"REALLYYYY!!! You're the best babe-" you tell him to watch carefully as you pull your shirt down and from in-between your valleys crawled out the purple beetle you had hidden
His mouth dropped his eyes looked like they would pop out of their sockets (imagine gojo when he looked at megumi)
"not fair y/n! Why does the beetle get to stay there and not me!" he's thinking about it being unfair,
Then the next second he wants to see if the beetle would fit in between his tits,
Of course, they do. I mean have you seen his tits? He's very proud of that fact
Wanderer
Nahida recently sent the both of you on an expedition together
He acts like he's not happy but deep down he's happy to be traveling alone with his beloved
Recently you both stopped at a shop to buy something but he had forgotten his mora back at camp.
He looked towards you waiting for you to pay, he narrowed his eyes suspiciously at you when you looked at him amused and asked "you sure"
"just pay." well, he insisted, so why would you deny?
As soon as you reached down your shirt his mind short-circuited
You pulled out a mora pouch and handed some mora to the shop keeper like it was nothing and then again stuffed the pouch down your tits.
Grabbing the things you started walking away as wanderer stood there just blushing violently
Looking back you yelled "are you coming or not darling?" he snapped out of it following after you
"did you really have to do that in fucking public?" he huffed in embarrassment, walking back home with a boner is annoying

Dog Tags (2)
Summary: Bucky Barnes x fe!Reader -> You're still keeping his Dog Tags safe.
Disclaimer: This is Part 2. Part 1 can be found here. Mentions of injuries and blood, Bucky helps carry you to safety (kinda), little angst/hurt/comfort moments, some fluff moments plus friendship moments with Wanda and Kate. Not Proof Read.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” Kate asked you for the millionth time. “It’s just that those arrows…I know I make them but sometimes I can put a little too much after kick- Clint tells me I need to find a substitute but the black market-”
“Kate,” you smiled and held your hand on her arm. “I promise you, I’m okay.”
“But that blast was big. Like, big big.”
You nodded. “I know. But I’m okay, I promise.”
“Kate!”
She turned and looked down the jet.
“Go, I’ll be fine.”
She looked back at you, “You swear?”
You nodded, “I swear.”
Once Kate finally left, you let the wall drop for a moment. You didn’t blame her. The kick had been big, but it had also saved your life. Maybe you got a few bruises to remember it by, but you knew you’d be okay.
It would just hurt in the meantime.
“Here.” A voice spoke somewhere above you.
You looked around you until you found where the voice was coming from. Bucky.
What the hell did he want?
You looked down at the hand where he was holding an ice pack. “Take it. For your ribs.”
You swatted his hand away, “I’m fine.”
Bucky just stood and rolled his eyes. Even watching you lift your arm to swat him away looked painful. He’d seen the blast with his own eyes, which also meant he knew that if it was him in your position, he wouldn’t have walked out completely unscathed.
“You’re not fine.” Bucky broke the ice pack before shaking it as he crouched in front of you.
For a moment, you recoiled back. “What the hell are you doing?”
“I’m gonna help you. Would you let me help you?”
This time Bucky didn’t fully wait for an answer before he placed the ice pack against your ribs for you. And, for a moment, you recoiled from the cold until your body melted into it.
Okay. Maybe you were hurt, a little. But that still didn’t mean you needed his help.
“I can hold it myself.”
“You can barely lift your arms.”
“I don’t need your help.”
Bucky shrugged, “You’re getting it anyway.”
“Why?” The question left your lips before you could stop yourself. But it was a reasonable question.
Save for a few questionable moments outside of the ten minute window you and Bucky could be alone, you weren’t two people that helped each other. Fought with was probably the more likely statement.
“Because you need it.”
It was the best explanation Bucky could come up with at that moment. But it still gained him something.
You were looking him in the eyes. It was rare he ever got to be this close to you and actually see the colour of your eyes. He didn’t quite know how the feud between you and him had started out. But what he did know was that he would happily drown in your gaze.
And it was thoughts like that, that sent him into a spin.
So, regrettably, he looked away. But even that gained him something.
You watched as a smile ghosted its way onto his lips and you followed his eye line to the metal chain around your neck.
“You’re still wearing them.”
The Dog Tags. The one’s he thought he’d lost nearly three months ago, only to work out you’d had them all along. It had nearly been almost two months, alone, since that night in the training room.
You raised a hand to touch your chest. You could feel the outline of the tags underneath your clothes. “You told me to keep them safe.”
You watched as a corner of Bucky’s mouth slanted up slightly and, just for a moment, you let your mind wonder what it would be like if you kissed him right in that spot.
You shook your head and this time, you looked away. You dropped the hand from your chest just before a rattle came over the jet.
“We’re coming into landing.”
You just nodded, not trusting yourself to use words at that moment. But you gained them again when you stood to get off the jet only for Bucky to put your arm over his shoulder.
“What are you doing? I can walk on my own, Barnes.”
“You’d only collapse three feet from here. Thought I’d save myself the trouble of catching you.”
You scowled, “Like I told Kate-”
“So help me, God, if you tell me you’re ‘fine’ I’m gonna call Sam. You’ve got a sprained ankle, a few fractured ribs, if not, broken, and a lifetime of bruises to remember today by. And that’s just what I can see.”
You just looked at Bucky, your arm still over his shoulder, his hand still clasping yours. You didn’t know how or why, but you let him help you off the jet.
But when Wanda asked you about it later on, you just told her it was because you were too tired.
“It was a moment of weakness.”
Wanda hummed as she sat on the edge of your bed. “Maybe.”
“Maybe? What do you mean, ‘maybe’? There’s no ‘maybe’ about it.”
Wanda chuckled, “Methinks the lady doth protest too much.”
You rolled your eyes. “Thank you, Shakespeare.”
Wanda hit your leg before climbing up the bed to sit beside you. She grabbed a pillow and crossed her arms over it.
“Oh, come on. You and I both know you have feelings for him.”
You shook your head. “Yeah, he’s a massive pain in the ass.”
“Those aren’t the feelings I’m talking about.”
You stayed quiet for a few moments. “Stop reading my mind.”
Wanda was calm as she shook her head. “I don’t have to read your mind for this one.”
Your shoulders sagged for a moment and you looked at your hands, picking at your fingers. “It’s not like I meant to let it happen.”
“Nobody ever lets feelings happen. They just happen. It’s what makes you human.”
You just shrugged your shoulders. “He is still a pain in my ass.”
Wanda chuckled. “Have you ever thought to talk to him-”
“No! No. No, absolutely not. No. Never.”
Wanda hummed again. “Maybe it might help. Who knows? Maybe this isn’t a one sided love affair?”
You recoiled a little, again. “Love? Who ever said anything about love? I’m sure it’s just a stupid…work crush.”
Wanda looked at you. She didn’t have to read your mind to know that even you didn’t believe what you’d just said.
“Hey,” Wanda tapped your leg. “Can I get you anything? You know, since Sam has banished you here for the next week.”
You chuckled. “I’m still allowed to leave…when he’s not here.”
When Bucky had taken you to the medical bay, you’d been given a full diagnostic. A sprained ankle, two fractured ribs, a little bruising around your internal organs that would heal itself, plenty of pulled muscles and, like Bucky had put it, enough bruises to make sure you remembered the day for a lifetime.
Once Sam had found out, he’d doubled down on the Doctor’s orders to maintain bedrest.
A few hours after Wanda had left, you were lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. And for a while, you just started thinking whilst absentmindedly fiddling with the dog tags still around your neck.
You thought about the ending of the movie you’d just watched with Wanda. You thought about the pain in your side. You thought about the feeling of Bucky’s fingertips gently pressing at your side as he held the ice pack in place.
He’d been checking to make sure nothing was broken. That was how he knew.
Then you looked at the dog tags. Like every night, your thumb traced over the letters.
Little did you know, the next time someone else traced their thumb over the letters, it was because your blood had been splattered across them.

˚༄࿔ thinking of musician ellie who’s a total yapper on stage
i’m imagining those tiktok compilations like “… core” with music in the background
⭐︎ reading signs from the audience while her band (jesse and dina ofc) prepare for the next song like…
“this one says ‘ellie why did you invite so many people to our first date?’” the audience laughs and so does ellie, “sorry, the next one will just be us.” she says with a wink.
⭐︎ girls throwing lacy bras on stage and ellie holding them up to her own chest (that look comically big next to her) and saying, “this is not my size.” >:(
⭐︎ her going on absolute rants in between songs like “dude the weed in europe is way stronger, what the fuck are you putting in this shit? i thought i was dying.”
⭐︎ if her band is just her, jesse, dina she’d be like “we’re like boygenius…but with a man.” and they spend five minutes arguing about who’s who.
“how did we decide i’m julien?”
“because you’re short and gay, ellie.”
⭐︎ her trying to hold a lesbian (or other pride flag), getting tangled in it, and whispering “fuck” into the microphone in between lyrics.
⭐︎ tripping over wires on stage and telling everyone in the crowd to “delete that video right now. i’m not kidding.” as dina is laughing in the back.
⭐︎ reading more signs. “okay, okay this one says ‘it’s my birthday’ guys we gotta sing.” and singing happy birthday to a random fan.
⭐︎ handing fans the microphone and letting them tell stories about their crazy exes “she slept with your mom?” and she’d look the camera projecting her image on the screen behind her and back at the person. “what the fuck, dude.” while laughing behind a hand.
