SHOWERS & BLADES
Happy Psycho Day everybody!
That's right, December 11 (at two-forty-three p.m.) is the day when, according to the opening titles, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho begins, right here in Phoenix, Arizona...
Tumblr media
Saturday before last was, by Phoenix standards, pretty rainy. Your Humble Narrator was driving home up I-17 and listening to Reel Music, the movie music show on KBAQ...
Tumblr media
...which was devoted that evening to scores from Hitchcock flicks. So there I was, listening to Bernard Herrmann's great theme from Psycho, with my windshield wipers keeping time, and it occurred to me that this was likely as close as I would ever get to knowing what it felt like to be Janet Leigh...

Can't help falling in love (with you) Chp.6
Jazz/Jason (Hardcover). DP x Batman crossover.
Based on this post
When a ghost does shenanigans, Jazz usually stays out of the trouble, since that's her brother's thing. This time? This time trouble found her in the form of a ghost that marries her to the Red Hood against her will.
[Read on AO3][Read on FF.net]

Chapter 6: Till death do us part
Jazz’s warm hand on his chest felt… right. Her presence, her head on his shoulder, the way her legs were pressed against his.
Now, after the high of the fight together and having a clear head — thank you, brother-in-law that he never knew he needed — he could sort through how she affected him without the pressure of imminent death.
He never felt particularly inclined to have an actual relationship with anybody. He tried, and some of them lasted more than others, but there was always something missing.
For a while he thought maybe he was too broken, too removed from humanity to actually be able to feel real human emotions; that after his resurrection there was only space in his heart for violence and vengeance.
For fucks sake, he had been such a child. Looking back to those years he knew he had been acting up and giving up on something he didn’t actually understand.
He was capable of love — he loved Alfred, and Dick, and Timbit, and Cass and every addition to the family. He loved his Crime Alley and his people, and he would die defending them. He loved his goons and he didn’t set up the goonion just for laughs. If you got him drunk enough, he would admit he maybe loved Bruce too.
But what he felt for Jazz? He hadn’t felt it before. He wasn’t sure it was love, but what he could be positive about is that he felt comfortable around her.
That she picked up what he let down without him needing to say a word was a plus.
Jason chuckled, enjoying Tim’s distraught face as he looked back and forth between them, his mind reeling, looking for an explanation.
“You are not married.” Tim accused. “I’d know.”
“Oh?” He highly doubted it but let it slide. “But it’s the truth. Isn’t it, darling?”
Jazz gave him a look and slapped him on the chest. “We got magically married by a ghost today— I guess yesterday at this point.” She added when she noticed the clock on the other wall marking three in the morning.
“You too?” Conner said, reaching for some cookies and more tea. “B didn't give any explanation— wait, you said a ghost did this?”
Tim looked at Superboy, frowning. “Ghosts can’t magically marry people.” He said.
Jazz breathed in slowly. “This one can. It’s Elvis.” How she said it with a straight face, Jason didn’t know. “Ghosts have obsessions — a purpose, a meaning, a goal. They have to fulfill it or they fade. This particular pain in everyone’s ass is a Vegas Elvis impersonator obsessed with making ‘perfect matches’.” She made the air quotes.
“And you guys are a match?”
Jason watched the trio in front of them carefully. So they were also affected by this ghost? Good thing that blondie had learned about the whole vigilante thing recently, or all of this would be an even worse shitshow than it was already.
Although, given how he was still eyeing Jazz’s weapons on the table, the guy wasn’t that used to their second life yet.
“Why, surprised?” Jason answered Tim, cutting off whatever Jazz was about to say.
“That someone is actually able to put up with you, yeah.” He replied with the same glare.
Jazz cleared her throat, funny enough, reminding them of Alfred.
“As I was saying,“ her glare was very Alfred too, “this ghost’s magic affects people in a way normal magic cannot break. We are looking into it, don’t worry.”
“We?” Bernard finally spoke, averting his eyes from Jazz’s stuff.
“My brother and—”
The woman stood up, glaring at seemingly nothing. Fast as lighting, she picked up a knife from her discarded vest and threw it at the other side of the room.
“Ow!”
Everyone turned to look at where they heard the voice. In front of their eyes, Danny — well, more like Phantom — materialized out of thin air. With a knife right in the middle of his chest.
Danny frowned at his sister. “Rude!”
“You deserve it.” She picked up another one, taking aim.
Two things happened at the same time: the trio on the opposite couch ducked, just in case; and Jason stood up to grab his wife’s hand before she got to throw the blade.
“Easy there.”
She yanked her arm out of his grasp, glaring at him. At least she put the knife down.
“What the hell was that?” Danny approached the group, ghostly tail forming a pair of legs before he completely descended and touched ground. He wasn’t happy when he yanked the knife from his chest. “At least your aim has improved.”
“I was aiming for your head.” She grit through her teeth.
“Are you still mad?”
“What do you think!”
Jason moved away from the enraged woman, just in case a brawl went down between the siblings. Jazz looked seconds away from jumping at her brother’s throat, and he was not idiot enough to risk his life by getting in the way.
“I’m sorry, ok!” Danny lifted his arms, trying to appear less threatening. “I... I know it seems sudden, but I swear there was a lot going on!”
“That’s the thing, Danny. There’s always something going on!” Jazz had many talents. One was, apparently, going from murderous intent to worried sister in a matter of seconds. “That’s how they get you. That’s how he gets you — a talk about responsibility and helping others and how there’s no other way and—”
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
His tone was final. His eyes were glowing. Danny — Phantom — wasn’t known for being serious, always striking the bats as some kind of trickster entity; but in that moment Jason could guess at some darkness inside the younger man that wasn’t there before.
He didn’t have all the information, of course, but apparently Jazz didn’t either. Jason watched her face go from confused to horrified to angry and finally, heartbroken.
“What did he do to you?”
Danny didn’t look at her eyes. Instead, he transformed and let his human body take over his ghost.
“Can we— Can we drop this? Please.”
You could hear a pin drop in the room. Dick wasn’t even breathing, hand frozen in the air with his teacup still in it.
Jazz’ body gave up, falling back to the sofa like a dead weight. Her expression was haunted. What did this even mean? What could have happened, that Jazz could guess just by Danny’s avoidance, that made the young man the Ghost King?
The situation wasn’t funny anymore.
Jason cleared his throat. “So…,” he tried, “the ghost?”
Danny looked relieved at his intervention. “Lost him somewhere across the world. I’m sure he’ll go back to the Ghost Zone eventually,” he shrugged, “but until then… back to square one.”
Jason looked back at Jazz, but she was still gone.
“What’s the plan now?”
Danny spared one last worried look at his sister before looking at him. “I think I could get some answers by asking around the Zone. And maybe beg Frostbite to have a go with the Infimap.” Nothing he said meant anything to Jason. Danny realized that and chuckled, rubbing the back of his head. “The yetis we mentioned? Frostbite is their leader. He also guards a relic that can basically take you anywhere and anywhen you want. It’s pretty neat.”
That sounded way too powerful to just drop casually in conversation, or call it “neat” with such nonchalance, but Jason would be the first to admit that you develop a certain kind of tolerance to craziness in their line of work.
“How long?” Tim finally spoke to their guest.
“What?”
“How long until you have answers?”
“Gee, Timmy. Don’t be so hard on the kid.” Dick intervened. “Are you in a rush to get divorced?”
By the way blondie blushed and hid his face in his hands, yes, he was in a rush. Jason half wondered what had happened between the three — he remembered Tim talking about his boyfriend, but he was positive he wasn’t talking about the super. How awkward. He almost jumped in to poke at the others but movement on his side distracted him.
“You okay?” He asked Jazz while the others discussed Tim’s particular conundrum.
“Not really, no.” She said after a moment of hesitation.
Unsure what to answer to that, he circled his arm back around her and squeezed her against his chest. Cass liked when he did that, but she always preferred quiet support to comforting words, and she enjoyed his hugs.
Jazz tensed for a moment before she tried to relax, so maybe she wasn’t so keen on hugs as his sister. She still patted his leg, acknowledging the gesture.
“Awwww.”
Both turned back to the conversation, finding the room fuller than before — Alfred was back with more tea and pastries, and Bruce walked in civies right behind him. The older man froze a little when he noticed the pair, one of his eyebrows twitching in the way Jason knew there would be questions later. He ignored them both.
“Danny.” Jazz cut whatever Dick was going to add. “What was that about a royal bond?”
The other got very quiet, eyes fixed on his sister’s. She got out of the hug and straightened her back, waiting for her answer.
“I don’t know.”
Jason could almost physically feel the young woman’s rage boil under her skin. “Explain.”
“I really don’t. I— They don’t actually teach about marriage in King school, Jazz.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah! Why do you keep asking?”
“Because I highly doubt you actually listened in class.”
Someone coughed a laugh. Danny’s face became red as he crossed his arms. “That was very mean. I don’t like your lack of faith in me.”
“But am I wrong?” She crossed her arms too, mirroring her sibling, and lifting one eyebrow. She knew she was right, but she still had to make him say it.
Jason rolled his eyes at the show, glancing at Dick watching the sibling spat while munching on more cookies.
“You are not wrong.” Danny finally admitted in a quiet voice. “But I’m telling the truth about not covering this!” He quickly added. “I did get some etiquette classes but—”
“Who? The classes, who taught you.” She added when Danny frowned, confused.
“Dora.”
“Then go ask her.”
Danny scoffed. “As if I have the time. Do it yourself.” He rolled his eyes. “I have to look for the Elvis ghost.”
“Whose fault is it that the ghost escaped, Danny?”
“Yours!” He bit back. “If you hadn’t freaked out so much about nothing—”
“Nothing?” Jazz stood up, breathing heavily. “Do you call finding out your baby brother is a King against his better judgment ‘nothing’!?”
“Hey, darling—”
“Don’t—!” Jazz slapped Jason’s hand away from where he tried to place it on her arm. She was tense, so tense he believed anything would make her jump. “Just. Not right now.”
“Jazz, listen—” Danny lifted his hands when her burning glare fell on him “Calm down, okay? We will figure this out. If not us, someone else must know. There are records, and you know how ghosts are sometimes about records.”
“Ghost Writer.”
Jason didn’t know who this ghost was, but Danny nodded, lowering his hands. “You can try his haunt and check that. I could have a look at the Keep too— or if you want you can do it yourself.”
“I can’t just uproot my life here in Gotham for this Danny.” Jazz started pacing, the gears turning in her head. “I have a test next week, and— and I was job hunting and— You understand that research takes time, yes?”
Danny rolled his eyes. “I know. But what else is there, Jazz? If you are so dead set on breaking this royal bond, if it cannot wait, then it is up to you what you are going to miss in the Living World.”
Bruce cleared his throat. “Are you in Gotham University?”
She blinked and looked at the Waynes as if she forgot they were there at all. Jason watched Bruce closely. “Yes. I’m currently getting my degree at Gotham U. Psychiatry.”
Tim and Dick glanced at each other.
“You can ask for accommodations and time off as long as you need,” Bruce tilted his head, “and if that doesn’t work definitely let me know. If they want to keep getting the Wayne Enterprises internships and donations they better let you take time off.”
Jazz made a face, which Jason couldn’t blame her for. So far she had taken very well being in the presence of Bruce Wayne but the reminder that this man alone held so much power over a city can be an uncomfortable stab. Even when such power it’s used for your benefit.
“I can’t… I’ve never… My grades—”
“Will not be affected. I can make sure of that. I don’t know — we can figure out something,” Bruce glanced at Jason, who nodded, “but you won’t have to worry about anything until you and Jason are back safe and sound.”
She blinked slowly. She turned towards Jason, her worried eyes glued to his face. He tried to channel his calm and collected demeanor when he dealt with victims, projecting security so she would stop freaking out like this. He nodded.
Jazz licked her lips and hummed. “Fine.” Nobody missed how Danny’s shoulders dropped at her declaration. “We’ll try Ghost Writer and see from there.”
***
After Jazz said yes, they immediately got to work. Introductions went faster than they should have — both parties knew of each other before this whole event, even Bernard knew who the trickster Phantom was after having listened to Tim ramble about him, or so the blond said.
Jason felt like everything was a blur as he went to the showers by Alfred’s orders, and got ready in civilian clothes to get on the road. He also checked his messages and informed his goons that he would be away on a mission and to hold the fort until he was back.
After spending so much time with Jazz, her absence felt… weird. Like walking with his balance completely off.
It wasn’t the painful sensation that brought him to her apartment in the first place, but more like an uncomfortable pull from inside his chest telling him to go after her. He could ignore it like he could ignore being hungry or thirsty, but he understood it was a part of him until they found answers to… whatever he got involved with.
Marriage.
Huh.
He wasn’t the marrying type. He had never dreamed of a wife and kids and picket fence; it just wasn’t something people like him could dream about — first as a kid from the streets and then as a crime fighter.
After he came back from the dead, he kinda… never considered he could be something else? There was so much to do in Gotham, so much to fix, and it never crossed his mind the possibility of hanging the cape and settling down with someone.
But apparently fate had something else in store for him.
He shook his head, lifting the bag with his discarded suit and adjusting the strap on his shoulder. There was no such thing as fate or destiny, he made his own destiny. He clawed his way out of his own grave, he could do whatever he wanted.
He arrived at the expansive garage and grabbed the Mercedes keys from the key box, walking towards the shiny black car that, while expensive and high tech, would be the best for blending in the small town Jazz was from.
Jason drove towards his apartment first and grabbed a spare suit, some weapons just in case, and the go bag he always had ready for a quick exit. Then it was back to Jazz’s apartment, where she had gone earlier to get ready for their trip.
She waited for him at the door of the building, wearing civilian clothes with her black biker jacket, arms crossed and a duffle bag at her feet. She wasn’t pleased.
“What’s this?” She asked the minute he rolled the window down.
“A car.”
“I can see that.” She didn’t make a move to get in. It started to rain, because of course. “What’s with the rich guy's car?”
“Turns out my daddy is the richest man in town,” he wiggled his eyebrows, “and let me play with his toys.”
She huffed, unbothered by the rain. This was so much fun. He never wanted to stop messing with her. Especially if she was going to act so antagonistic and pout in frustration.
“I thought that making the trip on a bike was a bad idea.” He added. “I love speeding down the road and forget about my problems like everybody else, but fifteen hours on a bike carrying my equipment and bags is not my idea of fun.”
The rain started falling harder, helping with his point.
He watched her eye the passenger seat and the back seat, almost hearing her thoughts considering if she should choose being in close proximity to him for a long car ride, or ignore him in the backseat.
The rain starting to become a downpour pushed her to make her decision.
“Alright, but you are driving the whole way.” She stomped her way to the passenger side and opened the door, threw her bag to the backseat without caring where it fell, and quickly sat and put on the seatbelt. “And I can choose the music.”
“I thought that was the driver’s right?”
“Rights revoked.” She pulled out her phone, opening the music app.
“By who?” He started driving down the street, glancing at how she connected the phone to the car’s bluetooth.
“By me.”
“That doesn’t sound fair.”
“Hm-mm,” she wasn’t listening to him, scrolling through her playlists. “Oh yeah.”
He wanted to ask what she was focusing so hard on, but the speakers started blasting Backstreet Boys’ 1997 hit “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)”.
Jason glared at her when he stopped at a red light. “Really?”
Her grin was wide and totally unauthentic. “What, you don’t like one of the best songs of our generation?”
Did he have to bring up that he was dead for six months and catatonic for about two years, and then trained with an assassin cult in the mountains as a valid reason why he didn’t feel connected to the song?
He understood very quickly that Jazz wouldn’t care about anything he had to say. She was smiling, waiting to get a reaction from him.
As the Backstreet Boys continued filling the silence in the car, he started moving the car again as the light turned green.
Did she want some kind of undignified reaction at having to listen to boy bands? Fine. She wouldn’t get one. He wasn’t a fan of boy bands but he wasn’t going to be a little bitch over it.
If Jazz was trying to vent her anger on him and goad him into starting an argument to misplace her frustration, he wasn’t going to enable her. Because yeah, he was very aware she wasn’t mad at him per say, he was just an easy target.
And Red Hood was nobody’s punching bag.
He smiled as wide as her and started humming to the song, fingers tapping on the steering wheel at the rhythm of the song.
It was worth it by the way she finally shut up and leaned back on her seat, huffing and shaking her head, murmuring something about bratty younger brother behavior.
His smile grew. He had won round one.

Buster Keaton Disregards Birthday to Finish Film
Buster Keaton spent his birthday working before the camera in the closing scenes of his fourth two-reel comedy, "Neighbors". Buster is serious in his occupation of making people laugh, and a long October day in California was coming to a close before the nimble comedian remembered that it was the occasion of his twenty-fifth anniversary, but he refused to doff his makeup and comedy clothes until the last scene was "shot".
That evening, however, Buster was the guest of honor at a birthday party given by his parents, Joseph and Myra Keaton, in their residence in the Hollywood picture colony. The elder Keatons and Buster made up the famous knockabout comedy team of the Three Keatons in vaudeville.
At Buster's birthday party the entire personnel of his studios, from Lou Anger, business manager for Joseph M. Schenck, down to the office boy, Luke McGluke, was present. Other guests were Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, the Metro stars, Viola Dana and Alice Lake; Shirley Mason, Miss Dana's sister; Lew Cody and Bernard Durning.

The International Distribution of Henri Fescourt’s Les Misérables: Universal Pictures, the Carl Laemmle-Victor Hugo Scholarship, and a surprise appearance by William Hays
Sometimes it happens that two movie versions of Les Miserables are made and released at the same time. It happened first in 1909, when both the Edison Manufacturing Company and the Vitagraph Company of America released versions. It happened again in the 30s, when Raymond Bernard released a version in France, at the same time that Richard Boleslawski made his version in America. And apparently it had almost happened in the 1920s. In 1925, Henri Fescourt released his version of Les Miserables. The movie is notable for being in four parts and close to six hours long. Meanwhile in America, Universal Pictures founder Carl Laemmle was apparently thinking of doing the same thing. In 1923 he had huge success with an adaptation of Notre Dame de Paris, starring Lon Chaney. "Some months ago I had in mind making into a photoplay, Hugo's great classic, Les Miserables,” Laemmle said. “When I learned that the Societé des Cineromans were already engaged in the production of this work, I investigated and found to my great satisfaction that it was being done most admirably. Having in mind our mutual desire to share the better of European productions with our American patronage, I arranged to distribute the picture in England and America.” (the Universal Weekly, 11 December 1926) At the Regent Theatre in Portsmouth, England Fescourt's Les Miserables was recut and shown in two parts: “The Soul of Humanity” and “The Barricades.” It was reportedly very successful: 18,000 and 19,000 people were said to have seen the first and second parts, respectively. And that’s despite 80-degree weather and competition from a carnival, a regatta, and the start of the football season. People were apparently lining up 2 and a half hours before the show in order to get in. At the Rialto Theatre in London, 14,200 people came to see it in its first week. (the Universal Weekly, 2 October 1926). In the US, the movie was initially shown in three theaters: to the Associated Advertising Clubs of the World at the Forrest Theatre, in Philadelphia, to the National Press Club at the Poli's Theatre in Washington and finally at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Some sources say that the film was shown in full (18 reels), some say that it was cut (to 14 reels). The Philadelphia and Washington showings were attended by the French ambassador. (The Moving Picture World, 10 July 1926). In attendance at the Washington showing were First Lady Grace Coolidge, Herbert Hoover (then Secretary of Commerce) and MANY other people whose names you can find here.
However the showing I would most like to have attended was the one at Carnegie Hall, which was presented with a special pre-show portion: an actor portraying Victor Hugo appeared on the stage, and then pretended to fall asleep, at which point actors dressed as characters from Les Miserables emerged from a giant copy of the book. “The Hugo speech and the resurrection of his characters were part of the Universal presentation given Les Miserables by James V. Bryson and Joe Weil,” reported the Moving Picture World. “The idea was taken from the original prologue in the picture itself and made an effective opening for this really fine production.”   For the film's wider release, Laemmle proposed to conduct a survey to see how people would prefer to see it: in its entirety or in an abridged form. Apparently he distributed a questionnaire via the Saturday Evening Post, Liberty, and Photoplay Magazine. Overwhelmingly people reported that they would like to see the movie unabridged, and that they would be willing to go to the theater multiple times to see the multiple installments.  Wagner's Ring Cycle was cited as an example of a story successfully told in parts. People felt very strongly about wanting to see the entire thing. As one journalist, who had seen the screening in Philadelphia put it: “It would be, it seems to us, a pity to subject this picture to the sort of ruthless cutting that would be necessary to bring it down to the length of a single feature. Great length usually consists of unnecessary padding, in a large measure, but not in this instance.” (the Motion Picture News, 10 July, 1926) In the Universal Weekly (a trade publication for theater owners) one ad reads:
Thousands gave the overwhelming answer [to the question of whether it should be cut]: “DON’T touch Victor Hugo; don’t rob us of a single scene of pathos, beauty, or magnificence; give us the immortal Jean Valjean as he lived, suffered, loved, and triumphed.” So “Les Miserables” will come to you in two distinct stories, for showing on successive days, or weeks, as you see fit. First, “The Soul of Humanity;” second, “The Barricades.” Each picture so big it ranks as a screen achievement; together — Victor Hugo as Victor Hugo would want to see his work on the screen. A radical step! Yes — and it is the RADICAL that is SHOWMANSHIP!” (the Universal Weekly, 2 October 1926)
However despite this declaration that the film should and would be seen in full, Universal ultimately decided to release an 11 reel cut. As the Moving Picture World reported: “At first the two-part proposition was voted so strongly that Mr. Laemmle was on the point of ordering the print cut that way and a campaign looking toward this distribution of the picture started. But later advisors won the day. He reconsidered at the last moment. The picture has been cut to eleven reels and Carl Laemmle now announces that it will be distributed to theatres next season as a single super-special.” But Laemmle wasn’t done. He had plans for another way of exciting the public’s attention: the Carl Laemmle-Victor Hugo Scholarship. It seems that originally Laemmle had intended the contest to be for college students, as he had purportedly reached out to over 700 universities to ask if they would participate. But ultimately it was decided that the contest would be open to high school students in the United States and Canada, with prize money intended to be used in furthering their education. A similar contest was to be held in the UK, where prize money could be used for university or an apprenticeship.  Students were invited to submit a 500 word essay answering the question:  "What ideals for life do you find in 'Les Miserables?'" To prove that the author was in high school, the essay needed to be accompanied by a letter from their school principal. A reporter for Universal Weekly opined: “The choice of this subject is regarded as a happy one in that it gives a present day aspect to the characters and motivations of Hugo's romance. It is said to be excellent also for its scope, and not of such a nature as to hamper students from certain sections of the country or from certain walks of life.”
Tumblr media
Ad in the Saturday Evening Post. For the US & Canada contest, it was announced that there would be ten $500 scholarships and one $1000 grand prize, for a total of $6,000 in scholarships (that’s over $100,000 today). The number of scholarships available was increased when Jean Sapene, of the Society of Cineromans also made a contribution of $3,000 (The New York Times, 14 Aug 1927.) According to Laemmle, the contest was not “any form of blatant advertising” (source) and yet…it was definitely an advertisement.  Though technically entrants didn’t need to see the movie to submit an essay, the contest was great advertising for the movie and additionally, it elevated the profile of the movie by branding it as educational, salutary even, not simply entertaining. In “City of Dreams: The Making and Remaking of Universal Pictures,” Bernard F. Dick writes that Laemmle wanted to be known as “a defender of the values derived from a liberal arts educations” but that “those values did not exist in the abstract; they had to be present in a film Universal was releasing. [In creating the scholarship] Carl was not especially interested in Victor Hugo’s novel Les Miserables but in Henri Fescourt’s 1925 film version that Universal was releasing.” “Much thought and discussion with my associates convinced me that an admirable way to [increase the general appreciation for Victor Hugo’s creative genius] would be through a student’s essay competition,” stated Laemmle. “This would entertain on the part of the entrants something more than a casual reading of the book and impress them with the value of character as exemplified by the life of the novel’s hero" (Niagara Falls Gazette, 18 October 1927.) The scholarships would be awarded by Dr. John J. Tigert, United States Commissioner of Education; Dr. Ernst Crandall, Director of Visual Education of New York City; Dr. Thomas Finnigan, Chairman of Visual Education of the National Education Association; and Octavus Roy Cohen, an author of “ethnic comedies” (and yes that's as bad as it sounds.) The head of the awards committee was Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, president of Columbia University (Butler would later win the Nobel peace prize but is remembered today for his notable silence in the face of the growing Nazi movement). The letter from Butler accepting the role of judge was published. Here is an excerpt:
My friend, Mr. Will Hays, has sent me your letter to him of November 9th with its kind suggestion that I should act as one of the judges in the interesting and highly useful competition that you propose for high school students. I have written Mr. Hays that it will give me great pleasure to accept your suggestion and to serve your cause to the best of my ability.
If you didn’t catch that, that’s William Hays, who the Hays code is named after.... So while I most strongly associate the 1935 American film version of Les Misérables with the movement to sanitize films and remarket them as educational, we can see that Hays and others were laying the ground work for that with this 1927 release, the scholarship contest, and an advertising campaign that sought to involve educators and students. In cities across the United States, special screenings were held for students and teachers, sometimes at a reduced price, supposedly due to the educational merits of the film (and definitely not in an attempt to sell tickets). Libraries and bookstores handed out hundreds of thousands of bookmarks (designed by the Cleveland Public Library) advertising the film, in addition to entry forms for the contest. In Charleston, South Carolina the high school superintendent wrote an article in the newspaper about the movie. (The Motion Picture News 28 January 1928). In Buffalo, New York school officials endorsed the movie and the superintendent distributed information about the scholarship. (The Motion Picture News 25 November 1927). In Boston the premiere was attended by the Governor, as well as 18 school superintendents (Motion Picture News, 18 November 1927). And in Houston, Texas students in the French and literature classes were given extra credit if they attended the movie (Moving Picture World, 31 December 1927).
Tumblr media
The bookmark in question (Moving Picture World, 24 December 1927.) So who won the contest? One of the $500 prizes was awarded to Alfred Hollander, a student of  Emmerich Manual Training high school in Indianapolis, Indiana. He came in 5th place.
Tumblr media
(The Indianapolis Times, 23 April 1929) And the first place winner was 14 year old Edwin M. Snell, a student at Central High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Tumblr media
(Exhibitors Herald World, 11 May 1929) But the real winner was Universal Pictures, which surely made buckets of money. And that’s all I have to say on the subject for now, except for to thank @mabeuf5 and @l832 for reigniting my interest in this topic and that I’m sure we will be hearing more about this from the two of you soon.

It was 20 years ago today :: A pack of merry pranksters hits the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on 22 February, 2004. Representing The Return of the King from the cast were Billy Boyd, Sean Astin, Liv Tyler, Andy Serkis, Bernard Hill, John Rhys Davies, and John Noble. ROTK won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture (joining the cast onstage were producer Barrie Osborne and Robert Shaye from New Line Cinema), but the real winner here was clearly the kilt seen round the world, eye-catching enough even for Liv Tyler's helpful attention in the press room. Liv also presented the film's reel at the show. Following the awards, the cast tumbled into the post-show swag section for some happy exhausted hijinks. A lot of photos here, yes, but only to honour what was truly one of the silliest, most special evenings of ROTK's awards circuit.

One Piece Chapter 1104 - Initial Thoughts
Tumblr media
We have waited long, but finally we are here
Let's see that fucking punch land!
Spoilers for the Chapter, Support the Official Release also
A nice little Disney-esque cover page as Sanji helps a mouse propose with a fancy dinner. Bernard from the Rescuers could've used a wingman like that, though he did tame a warthog, outwit a Goanna and push a hunter to his aquatic death so...
Back where we started with Kuma ready to wind up on Saturn
Kuma and Saturn's memories briefly flash; their encounter, the loss of Kuma's mother, Ginny, Ginny's death, Bonney and now Bonney crying as she is now, all leading to this moment
Saturn is flabbergasted, not just because Kuma's here but because Kuma is alive, he already triggered the self-destruct switch when the Revolutionaries took him
Mr 'I'm a man of science don't try to deceive me' got so fuckin' deceived
AND DAMN DID THAT PUNCH FEEL GOOD
Wham Bam and thank you Ma'am, Saturn is sent bleeding, reeling and covered in Egghead's rubble
And now that Saturn is struck, nobody's frozen in place, leading to them going after Bonney to check on her
Bonney however is being comforted by her father, as Vegapunk looks on in bewilderment
He did make a failsafe, it just wasn't as barbaric as a bomb, the switch should have shut Kuma down completely, and with no humanity left he should've just been empty
Vegapunk can't answer the question with science, but he does think about something the Buccaneers were said to have, but left vague to the audience
Kizaru has mixed feelings on this, but Sentomaru is relieved
Luffy has also disappeared, hidden in the ruckus
After over 3 long years, father and daughter reunite, with Bonney consoling Kuma over having seen his memories
'I don't care if everyone else calls you a tyrant, because I know there's no-one kinder than my dad' - welp we're not done with the feels I see
Alas, Saturn is of course alive from that, and the Elder is quite perturbed
Also missing half his arm and one of his horns as he demands an explanation from Vegapunk
Vegapunk admits it's his doing, but he doesn't have an explanation, cheekily suggesting the power of love being at play
He seems to take it aloofly, slowly regenerating his missing parts
He once again goes for Kuma, but this time he's not moving
So Sanji finally gets to do something! Kicking the spiked leg away
And then Franky out here just firing a Radical Beam through Saturn
Franky may not get much shine but between Driving his motorcycle into a Yonko's face and now firing a laser beam through a Gorosei he's amassing up some feats
Alas, Kizaru once again chooses to be a cog in the machine and attacks Franky in retaliation
Saturn also recovers from the beam attack
With Kuma unable to move, Atlas is charged with carrying him to safety
Kizaru also notes that Kuma's appearance has put too many players on the board
Vegapunk does reprimand Kizaru for still siding with the Government, though his response does imply some duplicity
As a result, Saturn orders a Buster Call, all of Egghead is an enemy of the government
A 'traitor', a survivor and a pirate with the powers of god, Saturn wants none of that smoke
Man still don't know about the giant mecha hidden away
A good chapter to effectively start the new year. We got the punch, and he might've regenerated from it but still we got the punch and it was good.
Luffy's absence is a cause for wonder, one does have to wonder too what's going down in the Labophase still with the Seraphim, Lucci vs Zoro and everyone waiting for the ship to get to the rendez-vous, also Robin is still AWOL.
It is cool to see Vegapunk marvel at something even he can't quite understand when it came to Kuma, it feels like something has clicked in his brain. But with Egghead now a target of the Buster Call there's so much he's going to lose from this, but at the same time the Gorosei can't remake the Mother Flame with Egghead destroyed.
There's still the matter of the Blackbeard ship and Caribou too, the sleeping giant is just one of multiple things waiting to come into play.
Luffy fighting Saturn in Gear Fifth does feel imminent, even if Kizaru is playing both sides, if it was just a Buster Call it wouldn't quite be a ground-shaking incident, but since the media has made out that Luffy had kidnapped Vegapunk there's little way that the WG are gonna come out of this shining.

What to do when you are a leafling: my annoying friend.
(Ah the dilemma of wanting to Write more olimin chapters and wanting to write corps chapters.)
Dingo watched as the S.S. Beagle flew away alongside the onion. Pom offered him to come along with her but it just wasn't his thing. Dingo could feel a smile crawl onto his face as he walked away.
DANDORI DANDORI DANDORI! WE SHALL ALWAYS DANDORI AND–
“SHUT UP!” Dingo screamed, everyone, even Shepherd, looked at him in shock. Dingo cringed to himself and could feel the thoughts subsiding once more. He silently prepared himself as Erma walked up to him. Dingo started to run. He climbed onto a rock and started to cry.
He could feel the thoughts coming back to him in a blast. Nothing but Dandori, he had to organize and save time, he had to…
“Hey? Are you okay Dingo?”
Dingo looked around and picked up Jack.
“N-no. I made a fool of myself. How come i seem to be the only one to resist the…well…the thoughts”
“The Connection meant to be like your comms man. We talk to each other and relay messages. So we can cooperate and survive. It's meant to keep us alive.” Jack chirruped. They held the toothpick with happy noises and did a few stabbing motions.
“Wait a moment, does that mean the Dandori thing isn't normal?”
“Dandori thoughts is a normal thing but at this strength. Does this mean someone is messing with it?” Jack said and tilted their head in curiosity.
Dingo let out a long sigh. The thoughts slipped into his mind again. Begging him to simply do Dandori, find a cave, find a bunch of Pikmin and be a Dandori practitioner. Maybe he should give up…yeah that sounded great to do…Dandori…he should Dandori all the time.
“Dingo? If you’ve got any problems, let me know.” a voice said. Dingo could feel himself blush again, it was Erma again, what should he say? He looked up to see Erma’s lovely blue eyes. He could feel the Dandori thoughts slip away as he looked at her.
“I’ll let you kn-kn-know.” Dingo managed to stammer out before he felt faint, no he should keep himself awake. No screw it! He needed to tell her, he needed to tell her everything!
“You want to know what happened to me. I’ll tell you, it all started when Bernard and I crashed in a place with giant pink flowered trees.”
Bernard wandered around the camp in a daze. The thoughts in his head he knew weren't his. But no matter how hard he tried, it seemed he couldn't reel them into his own sanity. Dandori is fun and the most efficient way to live life. If others were like him then maybe he would have not crashed. He never crashed in his life until now.
“Santi…friend…why don't we…when the ONION lands…you get someone…and let them embrace DANDORI!” Bernard declared.
“Why–” Santi started
“Because if we make them embrace DANDORI…we can save everyone…if I did DANDORI earlier…the ship…wouldn't crash.”
Santi raised an eyebrow, as annoying as Bernard was, this was completely not his thing. 35 years of dealing with, avoiding and getting annoyed by Bernard has made him familiar with the positive ace pilot.
“Bernard, are you okay?” Santi said with a hint of hesitation in his voice while light chittering began to echo in his head.
“I'm fine SANTI, I crashed the ship...I…” Bernard started, he hugged Santi tightly. Soft sobs began to sound from the pilot. Santi quietly dragged Bernard away from the general area around the base and to the rock. Oleander was sitting there and kicking their legs while Santi sat Bernard down.
“Who is that?” Oleander said, coughing a bit of poison out.
“My rival…It’s okay…You can talk to me…Like you always do.”
“Can you play your flute…for me?” Bernard weakly asked. He looked up with a smile as Santi took the frost covered flute out of his pack. Santi took a deep breath and began to play. Soft music danced around the air, bewitching the ears of those nearby. The thoughts in his head seemed to slip back into only his own. The soft whisperings of Dandori now seemed like a bad dream rather than a horrible reality. Bernard looked up with some sense of a smile on his face.
“That…feels a bit better….I don't know what came over me.”
“No worries Bernard we’re…ack…Best friends after all.” Santi said with a pained smile that had a hint of warmth to it.
(my idea is that even though Santi finds Bernard annoying due to the whole fate thing. He still cares for Bernard…a little. While Bernard sees him as a genuine friend.)

Storia Di Musica #290 - Steely Dan, Gaucho, 1980
My Rival è la storia intrigante di un tradimento, ma visto attraverso gli occhi di un investigatore privato con l’apparecchio acustico (He’s got a scar across his face/ He wears a hearing aid) sulle tracce di qualcuno da smascherare (Sure, he’s a jolly roger/ Until he answers for his crimes/ Yes, I’ll match him whim for whim now).

Laughter Lines
a joker junior retelling
It happens fast, the flash of memories. The pockets of coherency in the bubble that Junior lives in, limited and temporary, flooding with water at the sound of Bernard’s voice, threatening to drag him back down. Bernard, laughing and smiling and curling in on himself as he shakes with glee. Bernard, hands moving frantically as he rambles on and on about one of his theories, something purposefully dumb to make Tim laugh. Bernard, hand-in-hand with Tim, soft smiles and happy happy happy love. The bubbles pop, the memories fade, the flashes stop, and Junior is left reeling as he looks up, eyes catching onto Bernard’s. “Hi."

Somebody actually wrote a full on smut fic of Bernard the Elf from Disney’s The Santa Clause, like-
After 28 years of people simping for this grumpy elf and only now did somebody have the balls to actually write and post a fic where the Reader actually fucks him I am absolutely reeling ya’ll!
I want, no, need everyone to understand just how big brained this person and every other writer who does this same thing is. I got mad respect for those who have the guts to write smut of underrated, unpopular, or forgotten characters ‘cause they’re the real mvps of the fic writing world!
And the best part? Both the intro chapter and the smut chapter themselves are both really well written and are an absolute joy of a read. I was already hooked just reading the first chapter and was even more happy with the final product.~
My crops? Watered.
My skin? Cleared.
My childhood crush? Thriving.
