The Batman (2022) thoughts [pt 1/?] the villains (w Spoilers)
This movie had hijacked my mind and I have so much to say about it, I need to express it in SEVERAL posts
Gonna warn ya'll again, there's spoilers.
Let's start with the villains, of which this movie have plenty.
The Penguin caught me by complete surprise, and it wasn't just a cameo or anythin', he really had a role in this!
I liked how we had an array of villains that wasn't just "comic book supervillans" but the overall range of what Batman - Gotham - needs to deal with. Corrupt officials and the mob and, in contrast, the Riddler. Batman villainy is a spectrum, ok?
Considering the above, the inclusion of the Penguin adds a lot, because for me he always felt like the fine line between "realistic" and "fantasy" criminal, who could easily blend with both groups and re-invent himself to fit both groups. Dude's got a place at the poker table in Arkham AND Blackgate, know what I'm sayin?
I like this Riddler as a main villain for a Batman story, but I think he is not really my type of Riddler adaptation. To be fair, this entire grimdark telling hinges on him being realistic and scary, so we can't really have our usual flair of "minor annoyence vibez" we usually get from the Riddler. Overall I really enjoyed it, especially the sheer horror of the Riddler as a mirror to the Batman.
I would NOT abide by that Riddler outfit, though. Everyone is serving looks and this man is serving outhouse.
What was the Riddler's point, exactly? To drown Gotham? a move that would hurt the poor and weak above all else? To cause chaos? Maybe the fact that this plan is, upon the slightest scrutiny, absolute garbage, is part of the point.
"What does a liar do when he's dead? He lies still" made me go oooooooowwww when I got it. great riddle.
a lot of the riddles the Riddler riddles are just outright questions. I took it upon myself to call him the questionnaire. The Q&Anon.
The puns were great, though, so glad they put it in. We like to have a little fun here in Gotham. Thumb-drive, get it? get it???
I cannot believe we got to see Riddler Henchmen in this. I know they are not henchmen and in the movie the realization of the moblized forces of the Riddler is actually really terrifying (harking back to real world shit). But, like, Riddler henchmen. The worst kind of henchmen you can be.
The Penguin was great and I'm looking forward to watching the HBO show. I kind of liked how he was almost the comic relief of the film, and how there is no doubt in my mind he will use the chaos at the end of the movie to rise to the top and move himself along the realism-fantasy Batman villain line.
I was really stupid and didn't get the Falcone-Falcon connection till the movie pointed it out to me. I think it's just cause, like, him being the rat was so unthinkable - even though it made perfect sense once pointed out.
That part in the mayor's funeral where: Bruce Wayne (regarding Falcone leaving his territory): "Aren't you afraid you will get shot?" Falcone: "why? Because your father ain't around?" Was DIABOLICAL. I howled. Falcone you are SO wrong for that.
I HAD noticed that lil Joker cameo in the end there. I AM ignoring it because I have no patience for this clown loser.
Riddler looked at the batman and went "he's just like me fr" and he was so wrong. I go at smeared makeup battinson and go "he's just like me fr" and i'm so right.

Obsessed with Dano riddler. I have two (2) more followers than him. Can you imagine if I called up every inactive tumblr user that follows me like “Hey man. Yeah it’s me. Yeah it’s the mayor again”

I feel like people really underestimate the importance of Dick being the first Robin. Like, reverse Robin AUs are interesting and such, but I just hope people realize that in the context of canon, they would never work. The reason Batman and Robin ever works is because the first Robin was Dick Grayson specifically. Because Bruce would never have taken in any child if Dick's tragedy hadn't specifically happened to mirror his own experience. Dick Grayson was the only one Bruce truly saw himself in first, because the fundamental event that defines them is the same. And he sees the opportunity to help someone the way he was never helped, to make sure that Dick didn't go down the dark path he did. So, my point here is that the only one Bruce actually made the choice to take in, the only one who could kickstart it all, is Dick Grayson, because he is the only one with whom Bruce could immediately empathize and connect with.
This never happened with any other Robin. He took in Jason because he missed Dick, he took in Tim because Tim forced himself into the role, he took in Steph because he was trying to make Tim come back to being Robin, and Dick made Damian Robin. Of course, he loved all of them, and they all have their unique relationships with Bruce that are very important and inform their characters, and he does need them too. But he specifically formed this connection with Dick that made Dick the only person he ever considered taking in. It took a very specific set of circumstances in Dick's backstory that made Bruce commit an impulse adoption that just isn't really present in any other Robin's story. And the reason Jason or Tim or Steph or Damian or anyone else whom Bruce has taken under his wing even got that chance is because of the work Dick Grayson put into Bruce Wayne.
Before Dick, Bruce was reckless and didn't care at all about himself, to the point of almost being borderline suicidal. He was more brutal, more violent, etc. The reason all this changed, is because of Dick Grayson specifically. He was the one with whom Bruce opened up, with whom Bruce was forced to grow up, to take responsibility and learn to take care of both Dick and himself. Dick, to Bruce was the one who brought "color to their [his and Alfred's] monochrome lives." Dick Grayson's specific brand of happiness and joy changed Bruce for the better. Dick gave Bruce hope. This is true for other Robins too, but only because they followed the precedent that Dick Grayson set, only because they slid into his role (they have their own interesting relationships with Bruce, but this specifically is from Dick that other Robins carried on. A legacy, if you will). Dick Grayson turned Bruce into the kind of man who would become a serial adopter.
Without his influence, without his precedent, there would be no Batfamily, because Bruce would never have gotten to the point where he would be able or willing to take in someone else and care for them properly (It took living through his trauma again to get him to take Dick in lmao). Hell, there would be no Batman because Bruce would have gotten himself killed a long time ago if Dick hadn't helped him learn self-care. Dick knows Bruce best, because he understands him on a fundamentally deeper level than anyone else in the world. And he's the only one who can make Bruce open up at his rawest, most downtrodden state. He is the only one who can give Bruce at his lowest that kind of hope. There is no Robin without Dick Grayson. It's literally a tribute to his parents, using their colors and the name his mother called him. He created that identity as a symbol of hope. He helped Bruce become the kind of man who could and would let other people that he had to care for into his life. Without Dick Grayson, you can simply forget about any other Robin or the Batfamily as a concept even existing.

Okay, hear me out, stephanie brown as battinson side kick in the batman 2.
and before you say Im crazy, please listen:
At the start of the batman 2, Bruce fights the latest in a series of riddler copycat that appeared following the events of the first movie. This one calling themselves “cluemaster”. Batman tracks him to his home after receiving an anonymous tip and fights him. He knocks him out and handcuffs him for the cops, but before he can leave he discovers Stephanie in the home. Stephanie thanks Batman and tells him she knew he’d stop her father. Batman quickly realises that it was Stephanie who gave him the tip. Steph explains that her father became mentally unwell after her mothers death and became inspired by riddler. Fearing him she tipped batman off to his location. Batman thanks her and goes to leave but Steph asks him to stay, fearing her father waking up. He reluctantly agrees and they talk until Gordon arrives. Bruce later decides to take her in temporarily until the new orphanage he’s funding is completed. Steph is incredibly intelligent, has met batman and is in close proximity with Bruce. All this eventually leads her to discover that he is batman and she insists on helping him. Of course he says no but that’s not gonna stop her…
After this little ramble about how the story could go, here are my reasons on why I think stephanie would be amazing in battinson universe:
Hope - Steph is a character who deeply values hope—holding on to hope for herself, and also bringing hope to others. More than for any other Robin, Stephanie grew up idolizing Batman as a symbol of hope and resistance, not fear and vengeance.
Connection to the lower class and crime-vulnerable population of Gotham- Rather than allowing a child into the crimefighting world, Batman meets a kid who already lives there. Rather than just swooping in from above to save the masses down below, Batman empowers someone to save her own people.
Giving Steph the spotlight - Lately, DC has been cashing in on Stephanie representing a Girl Wonder (Robin 80th Anniversary Spectacular, Robins, Wayne Family Adventures, etc) among a herd of weirdly identical teen boys. While it's nice to see Steph getting recognized, her actual 10-week stint as Robin was basically a mean-spirited stunt instead of a proper run. It'd be nice for Steph to legitimately get a major spotlight as Robin.
Balance - Frankly, a girl could be a good next addition to Team Batman. A girl Robin could balance out Batman, Alfred, and Gordon being an all-male team.
If you got to this point, Thanks for reading!!

Stephanie Brown cooking skills
Tumblr media
Batgirls (2022-2023) #11
Okay so I'm still a novice in comics and generally slowly learning the details of history of these characters, and I'm also aware there's been like continuity reboot things over the years. But from what I understand, her backstory involves having a father who is both a deadbeat and a criminal who has done prison time. Her mother meanwhile is both a nurse (a rather time-demanding job) and also addicted to drugs.

Robin (1993-2009) #3
So maybe this is a bit of a nitpick... but Steph feels like someone who should be rather self-sufficient given her circumstances and at least know how to do some basic cooking to feed herself when her parents aren't available or unable (such as not screwing up cup noodles).
Just feels like the kind of backstory which would lead to someone learning life skills in one manner or another at a young age to make up for parental lacking.
Although to be fair, thing might not necessarily be that bad and even if it were then there's still ways for Steph to get food without having to cook it herself.
Just some thoughts anyway.
Anyone with more knowledge of Steph, or the current continuity, let me know if I'm just overthinking things or not?

I’m tagging this as spoilers just in case

I was reading through the Year One comic when I came upon this. I was wondering what it meant but I couldn’t find anything online (unless I was looking in the wrong place). Sorry if anyone else has already answered this but I’m not very good when it comes to solving deciphers
