Jess Piper at The View from Rural Missouri:
George Orwell has been on my mind a lot and I am sure on yours as well. I taught “1984” in a Brit Lit class. The kids were always shaken at the authoritarianism and the cruelty of Oceania. You understand deeply why I mention Orwell at this moment. As of late, I could scream. I knew these next four years would be difficult, but I didn’t imagine the absolute chaos on day one. And two. And three. And every damn day. It never stops and we aren’t even two weeks in.
Besides the obvious cruelty, it’s the language of this administration that drives me mad…the lack of civil and academic and professional language. The feeling that we all get a little dimmer every time we listen to a lackey or toady or the President spouting lies and demeaning journalists. Demeaning anyone with any sense who listens to what is coming out of the White House. It’s torture to know that what we see is what we get. The dumbing down of a country, one presser at a time. One Cabinet pick at a time. One Department at a time. “It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words.” ~George Orwell, 1984
Orwell would likely call the current state of the Department of Education as the Department of Uneducation. Remember Newspeak? It was Orwell’s fictional language designed by a totalitarian government to control the population by limiting vocabulary and manipulating the meaning of words, restricting the range of thought and critical thinking.
[...]
Many states, just like mine, are using vouchers to pay for private religious schools who may discriminate on nearly any basis. Our taxes are funding religious education for a small percentage of American students and the majority of vouchers go to families who already have their children in private schools. [...] Book bans are not a hoax — they did not originate in the Biden administration and they very much existed during the first Trump presidency. From July 2023 to June 2024, there were 10,046 instances of book bans in 220 public school districts across 29 states. The states with the most book bans are red states including: Florida, Iowa, Texas, Missouri, and Utah. But, I bet you already knew that. [...] I haven’t even mentioned the Department of Education’s new Secretary, WWE Queen, and Trump loyalist, Linda McMahon — a massive proponent of “school choice.” I don’t mention her because she doesn’t really matter. She will do exactly as she is told. She has little experience in schools. She has never been a teacher. She has never been an administrator. She served on a School Board for a time. The new Secretary is an entertainer like her President— she also plans to gut public education and that is exactly why she was chosen for the position.
Jess Piper wrote on her Substack blog that the US Department of Education under the Trump/McMahon regime is engaging in deceitful doublespeak that will harm education.

people who're thinking that the syntax of the alleged feds letter is similar to Luigi's actual letters in prison, do any of y'all know english grammar and how it works?? somebody who says "i come from an engineering background" is not gonna be the same person who says "i work in engineering". firstly because "i work in engineering" makes no sense. it's like a doctor saying "i work in medicine" instead of simply saying "i'm a doctor" or "i come from a medical background".

One of the most important producers of the 21st century Gordon Raphael is not only ‘’The Strokes producer’’ but an important figure in the Seattle Sound. At the same time as grunge took over Seattle and the world, his bands Mental Mannequin, Color Twigs and Sky Cries Mary became equally as popular in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. He is most known for his work with The Strokes, Regina Spektor, The Libertines and The Psychedelic Furs. However, his music showcases an alternative side of Seattle during its 1980s and 1990s musical revolution years, whilst demonstrating the same level of social and political consciousness. Not only did he revolutionize rock music with The Strokes, but he produced songs on Green River Dry As a Bone (1987) and they are considered as one of the first grunge bands. Here is an interview with one of the most important Seattle musicians about Seattle, psychedelic rock and how he met The Doors!

When someone tells you to put your whole pussy into something. You do it. Even if that someone was a voice in your brain wanting a way to engage and community build with others - despite geographic location and ideologies.
This zine is looking to be something similar. We am hoping to build a place for good-faith dialogues. Where marginalized voices are vehemently protected and valued. Where people can come with genuine questions they have - so that they can get answers and learn from a community of people they value.
This substack will always be free. We eventually may make a ko-fi and maybe a place to purchase a physical zine in case anyone is interested in getting their hands on one or donating to the cause.
Right now though, we say welcome! Join this little group and engage (or lurk!) to your hearts content.
This is still in the baby stages so if getting in at ground level is your cup of tea? Here you are, love.
Remember, stay kind and operate in good faith. Otherwise the block button is there and I'm not afraid to use it!

Cannabis enthusiasts, this one’s for you! 🌟 Whether you call it Mary Jane, cannabis, or something else, it’s a plant that’s sparked joy, creativity, and even controversy. For me, it’s been a ride-or-die companion—helping me write, game, and vibe to music. But let’s be real: it’s not all rainbows and butterflies. Balance is key.
Overindulgence can turn a chill session into an anxiety spiral (been there, done that 😅). So why not normalize moderate consumption? Let’s ditch the 1000mg edible flex and embrace mindful use. Oh, and did you know hemp products with CBD can offer relaxation without THC? Game-changer! 💡
I dive deeper into cannabis culture, moderation, and more on my Substack: Natalie After Dark. It’s raw, unfiltered content on everything from relationships to skincare to cannabis. 🌙 Subscribe to join the conversation and support bold storytelling.
✨ What’s your relationship with cannabis? Have you found your balance? Share your thoughts below! 👇

Do It For Your Sake
Be on the forefront of a collective healing revolution, of your healing revolution.
Learn the craft of healing your thoughts, physiology and self.
Practise the art of restoring regulation to your system.
Commit to being the advocate of your mind, health and life choices.
All of that awaits you in consumable nuggets of healing information.
Do it for your sake.
Free Advice: Commit to yourself
I wanted to make it as affordable as possible. Truly.
When I began healing, I ate plain pasta with cheap ketchup and shared a room that used to be stables or something.
I want to give you what I wish I had been given.
To tell you what I wish I had been told.
The cheap-ketchup times taught me two things:
The free subscription must be an option because there are fellow plain pasta eaters.
The paid subscription (at the price of one cup of Starbucks coffee/month) must be there to give me the time and freedom to give you even more.
The first post, FOR MY SAKE: The Simplified Version, is your go-to guide to FOR MY SAKE!
HERE IT IS!

do you see this tendency of people to believe telepathy is real (re: TTT / the commenters on your substack essay) as at all connected to like, how widespread belief in astrology is, and people talking about being witches and doing magic and casting spells, and other similar very woo stuff? it seems like a lot of people are very invested in what i would see as being Fake Shit, obviously some of which is much more harmful than others, and they don’t seem to understand that this thing they expect everyone around them to also believe is true is actually like a supernatural belief or whatever that other people should not be expected to also believe in
I think the cultural and ideological pathways of some of these things can be fairly different. We should be very precise about the mechanisms through which the extreme conspiratorial ideological capture happens and how and why it does.
On the one hand, there is a clear throughline connecting a variety of types of "Conspiritualist" thinking that radicalizes people -- parents who cannot cope with their kids' Autism initially invest their hopes in special gluten-free allergen-free diets, then have Reiki performed on them, then shell out thousands of dollars for dubious untested supplements, then become antivaxxers and claim their children have telepathy and vote for Robert F Kennedy Junior. These beliefs progress in intensity and remove from reality, and they're linked usually to organizations or spiritual leaders who profit off of people and move them forward along the radicalization pipeline.
Similarly, there's a spiritualist/reactionary ideological pipeline that begins with being deeply fatphobic and obsessed about fitness and clean eating that morphs into regular enemas, eating nothing but raw meat, taking Joe Rogan supplements, eschewing all medicine, and voting for conservatives.
Those ideological pathways are quite different from the ones followed by a queer witchy type who initially got into tarot or pendulum-reading as a conscious fuck-you to the homophobic Christianity that they were raised with. I do not see the degree of radicalization happening there that you see with the right-wing conspiritualists and I think it's somewhat messy to conflate the two.
If a person gets into astrology as an queer-dating icebreaker or takes a spellcasting class at the local witchy bookstore, it progresses to, what? Buying too many decorative crystals? Maybe refusing to have a Virgo as roommate? There's biased, unscientific thinking happening here but there simply isn't a massive industry in place devoted to capturing this group, isolating them, leeching them of huge sums of money, and moving them further down an ideologically extremist pipeline.
Of course both communities share interests at times -- astrology, alternative medicine, white person pagan bullshit -- but I think we should be really precise about exactly what's going on here because it's not the case that the bulk of the damage is being done comes from people having a silly hobby or believing something untrue. (Most humans do to some extent). There is a significant difference between owning a few spiritually elevated good-luck items on the one hand, and becoming completely isolated from anyone who believes differently from yourself, eschewing all medical care and educational resources for you and your family, depending upon predatory hucksters and joining hate movements on the other.
There are spiritualist/woo woo communities that capture individuals and move them further along the pipeline of far-right radicalization but picking up a Chani Nicholas book or a steven universe tarot deck is just not gonna lead to that.

"As an educator, I don’t just want you to feel what I feel. I don’t want you to consider me correct because I said it beautifully. I want to sharpen your critical thinking skills and your world-making capacities. I absolutely do not leave emotion out of that! Emotions are as central as the written, verbal, numeric, social, ecological knowledges we are able to gain to navigate this world and the next. I am just… extra cognizant of how much I can lead viewers to feel with me without further thought. The videos of mine that go most viral are ones where I show the most emotion, whatever that emotion is: hopeful, cheery, despondent, grieved, furious, combative. We love emotion. We live such isolated, stifled lives.
The challenge of reading is to navigate the narrative without the overtures of overt feelings. There is no face to latch onto, no music that sways you. Words on a page especially cannot compete with screen-time. They’re not meant to. The boredom opens up space in your mindscape to your own thoughts, opinions, and feelings."
—Ismatu Gwendolyn, "you've been traumatized into hating reading (and it makes you easier to oppress)", from Threadings on Substack
