This is gonna be a long one.
When astronauts go out on a spacewalk, they report a feeling of extreme euphoria. Seeing the Earth from such a vantage point, the beauty and awe of it is so overpowering that it can be dangerous. Astronauts have to train to harden their hearts to it, just to get any work done. Isnāt that kind of funny in a way? That our little monkey brains are overwhelmed by seeing the beauty of our home? By witnessing firsthand the majesty and scale of space, and our planetās place in it?
Not to sound like a tree-hugging hippie or anything (although I vibe with those guys) but I think we could all use an experience like that every once in a while. Go watch the sun set on the water. Watch the golden light dance and sparkle on the waves like diamonds, and flash on the scales of jumping fish. Listen to the tide lap gently on the shore. Reach your hands into the water and dig your fingers into the wet silt. Watch the gulls fly lazily in the gentle breeze overhead, watch the sun set until the last shards of light fade into red embers behind the horizon, the horizon that stretches as far as you can see in either direction.
Just⦠let go of it all, every once in a while. Itās so easy to get caught up in small things, little slights and petty squabbles. Humans pride themselves in words and numbers, insignificant symbols we use to make sense of things we canāt imagine. Try not to let them crowd your mind; let them fall away, and see the world as it is, unclouded by meaning. Experience the beauty of the world in its raw, unprocessed form.
Or something. Idk, Iām just some little gay person in your phone. Do whatever I guess. Anyway.

It's surprising and, perhaps, a little depressing for a book so ostensibly beloved and held up as one of the finest in English literature, that Pride and Prejudice is so widely misquoted and misunderstood. It seems to be primarily viewed as a romance in the public's imagination, rather than the comedy of manners it truly is.
A large part of these misconceptions are admittedly, due to its various adaptations. I think a lot of people are surprised when they read the novel for the first time and discover that Mr Collins does not possess an affinity for boiled potatoes; that the proposal scene does not take place in the rain; that the second proposal is not made by Mr Darcy stumbling over his words at dawn and, ultimately, that he does not emerge from a lake in a wet white shirt. Nor is he really a brooding romantic hero.
The adaptations have had such a huge impact on the popular perception of Pride and Prejudice, that all of these products can be found on only the first two pages of an Etsy search of the title. All very nice products, I am sure. However, none of them contain quotes found in the original novel:

(quite why you'd want to be seen in a 'barely tolerable' hoodie I don't know but... each to their own... )
I question how widely-liked the actual novel is, if those who are keen to walk around in merch or decorate their homes inspired by Pride and Prejudice, are doing so with references that are nowhere to be found in the book's pages. Adaptations are part of many of our paths to falling in love with the novel; they were part of mine. But there are so many hilarious quotes contained within the first few chapters alone, you soon realise that nothing can live up to Austen's quick, witty dialogue or her observational comedy.
Yet, even when the novel is correctly quoted, it is not always done in an apt manner. Jane Austen was deemed important enough by the Bank of England to warrant her own banknote. Released in 2017, it looks like this:

I remember the controversy about the portrait, and how little it actually looks like the only (incomplete) drawing we have of Jane (which was said by those who knew her to not even resemble her all that well), but that's another matter. I'm most interested in the quote from Pride and Prejudice beneath it:

Let's put the quote in context. It is taken from chapter 11, and spoken by Caroline Bingley who is trying, unsuccessfully, to capture the attention of Mr Darcy.
Why did she pick up a book? Because Mr Darcy did:
'Darcy took up a book; Miss Bingley did the same'
How much enjoyment did she derive from the book? Not a great deal, apparently:
'Miss Bingleyās attention was quite as much engaged in watching Mr. Darcyās progress through his book, as in reading her own; and she was perpetually either making some inquiry, or looking at his page. She could not win him, however, to any conversation; he merely answered her question, and read on.'
And now comes the actual passage from which the quote is taken, which tells us why Caroline chose that particular book:
'At length, quite exhausted by the attempt to be amused with her own book, which she had only chosen because it was the second volume of his, she gave a great yawn and said, āHow pleasant it is to spend an evening in this way! I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library."'
On the surface, such a quoteāespecially taken in isolationāwould invariably lead you to believe that said character was an avid reader. However, the context demonstrates that Miss Bingley is far from a bookworm.
If you were left in any doubt, however, her next action surely confirms it:
'No one made any reply. She then yawned again, threw aside her book, and cast her eyes round the room in quest for some amusement'
As soon as Caroline realises that her quest to capture Mr Darcy's affection is futile, she throws her book away entirely; perhaps there are more enjoyable pursuits than reading, after all.
So, a quote deemed to have such importance as to be immortalised forever alongside Jane Austen on the currency of an entire nation (the design of which will likely be used for several decades) is so important in the context of the novel that it is... uh... *checks notes* ignored entirely. Right.
I mean, I don't necessarily understand why the quote had to be about reading but if it was, I could argue that a quote from Mr Darcy in chapter eight, about how extensive reading improves the mind could be far more sincere. Or why not one of the numerous lovely quotes from the novel? Obviously, an agenda was set and a quote needed to be found to match it.
Still, it is quite ironic indeed that reading actually opens your eyes to how ridiculous a choice of quote was made.
Anyway, what is my overarching point? Well, I think, largely due to its various adaptations, a majority of people believe they know the story of Pride and Prejudice. But shockingly few, despite it being consistently ranked as one of the most popular books, actually understand it on the level which it deserves to be.
This post was not intended to bash adaptations, it is absolutely fine to like them! But they are, by their very nature, going to differ from the book. That is inevitable. Yet, I think it's quite sad when people watch a film or series and believe they can possibly understand the story on the same level. Spoiler alert: you cannot. I know books are a luxury and reading is time-consuming, but Pride and Prejudice is out of copyright now. PDFs are abundant, as are audiobooks if you cannot sit and read!
Put some time and effort into understanding the novel. I promise not a single second of it will be wasted; you will gain a deeper admiration for Jane Austen's talent as an author, and you will fall in love anew with the many wonderful characters she so beautifully brought to life.
#jane austen#pride and prejudice#elizabeth bennet#mr darcy#caroline bingley#classic lit#classic literature#text#my analysis#i do also think that adaptations are not inherently 'good' or 'bad' in terms of helping you understand a novel#it is very much an individual skill issue and just bc you like a flawed adaptation DOES NOT mean you didn't understand the book#tastes differ and that's fine#we also have individual connections to things like 2005 will always mean a lot to me bc of who i first watched it with and when i did#but god nothing compares to the book NOTHING nothing i love it so much i want it tattooed all over me it is PERFECT#and i wish everyone could get that enjoyment sigh#and i also just wanted to rant about the banknote because i truly hate having one in my purse. like seeing a royal on one side is enough of#a jumpscare already thanks but then creepy yassified jane???? i'll just use contactless forever i guess#anyway i like making these longer form posts it scratches my brain in a nice way and i hope you enjoy them too <3

The one thing I want from the Maul show
The trailer for the new Maul show looks fantastic with beautiful animation and some great voice acting. And of course, there's our usual Maul-isms such as he need for revenge and his never ending quest for an apprentice. I do love that Rook points out that he had another vision, which I think is pretty cool for Maul. I love the small details such as the sound of his legs against the metal ramp to the ship. I also love that we're getting an encounter with an inquisitor since in Rebels, his lightsaber is made out of a broken inquisitor blade.
With that said, the one thing I truly hope for are quiet moments where we really get a chance to delve into his inner thoughts. Underneath his quest for vengeance, who is he truly?
Maul is a complex person; while there is no doubt that he's not very moral, he is still very vulnerable, lonely, angry, and has a longing for a companion. The unfortunate reality is that Maul's upbringing has essentially tarnished his interpersonal skills and mind to a point where he struggles to have even the most basic meaningful connection. Savage sure tried the brotherly route and was met with an apprentice-master dynamic. Maul, of course, did care in his own way but has zero concept of healthy relationships other than what was taught to him.
Ezra was a similar situation where there was an offering for companionship (naïveté aside), but Maul still had to go down that master-apprentice route (and try and take out the real master for good measure). When Maul is at his most desperate to hold on to his connection with Ezra, he pleads that they could be like friends, even brothers. Of course, he's still not above using Ezra to get to Obi-Wan.
The point is, Maul continues to be one of Star Wars' most tragic figures: a lonely man who will never find peace with himself or anything in his life even when others try and offer it to him. It's his internal battle that makes him so compelling to me. Maul has to continue a quest that will never satisfy him. He's been offered chances for a better life, but never takes it. And with this new series, I truly hope they will give us more insight into his inner world. Does he still think about Savage? Has he ever considered the self-destructive nature of his quest (tbf, in Rebels he definitely knows imo).
We know that he will be getting a new apprentice, which could be a great opportunity to explore Maul's more tragic and sympathetic side.
It's pretty well known that Maul tends to seek companionship in people he not only sees potential in, but also sees a part of himself. Savage being his brother aside, with Ahsoka, Maul saw someone who had been cast aside, and with Ezra, Maul saw someone who shared his desire to defeat the Sith and avenge those he lost. Maul yearns for that connection and I'm curious so see if this relationship will be different from Ezra or Savage. It will still be master-apprentice, but will the girl be more hesitant to learn like Ezra, open like Savage, or eventually embrace the teachings and kick Maul to the curb? Maybe, just maybe, Maul will have a somewhat positive relationship that isn't just him dominating someone else the whole time. I'm getting off track here, but I really would be curious as to how another apprentice route is going to impact Maul (especially considering how every storyline he's in always includes some sort of master-apprentice dynamic).
Based on the trailer, it appears that Maul has a vision about the Twi'lek girl and offers to train her. It appears that his line about an unfilled destiny is directed at her and he can help her reach that potential. I'd love to see what this vision entails since it has to be pretty significant for Maul to go out of his way to seek her. Perhaps, Maul seeks to help the girl fulfill her "destiny" as a way to soothe his own aching soul considering he feels robbed of destiny.
Thinking back to Clone Wars, I wouldn't be surprised if Maul was haunted by what happened on Mandalore and with Order 66. In Rebels, he does have a portrait of Satine that he destroyed. We know Sidious is the man he fears more than anything. I can imagine he is plagued by nightmares and anger. He lost everything and getting a chance to "restart" with a new apprentice might just be the opportunity he jumps at to find some sense of purpose.
Purpose is another core Maul-ism. This guy literally tunnel visions on like one or two things (destroy Obi-Wan and Sidious) and then makes it everyone else's problem. In fact, part of Maul's tragedy is that he can't see another path for himself other than revenge. It is a result of his upbringing, but what's tragic is that he can't let it go, ever. So much of his pain comes from the fact that he will never be satisfied in life; everything around him fails and he can't even beat one specific Jedi. And for all the pain it's caused him, Maul can't. let. go. Enter a potential apprentice with an "unfulfilled destiny." No doubt Maul will use this to channel his own sense of purpose. I am really interested to see how this theme plays out with the Twi'lek girl and I wonder how much of this "unfulfilled destiny" is coming from her or from Maul.
Remember Ezra? He wanted to defeat the Sith, but it wasn't his number one priority. Maul was the one who influenced that side of him because that's what Maul wanted. He took advantage of a young, naive boy and it led to disaster. I'm curious of the Twi'lek girl's motivation and why she is in Maul's visions. Maybe this girl will give us more insight into Maul's inner world. Will she be someone he truly bonds with (to the extent that he can)? Or is it going to be more closed off as it has always been with Maul? Maul does open up, but the narrative usually is either very skewed or he's just venting.
All and all, I'm just excited to see Maul again. I realize this whole post just went into a ramble about Maul's character but he truly is such a fascinating person. His story is defined by the anger and pain he experiences, he is merciless on his quest for revenge, and yet, we the audience are still asked to feel sympathy for him. We see his vulnerabilities, his pain, his grief, his longing for connection, and over and over again, we see his failure. Maul is a cautionary tale of what happens when you allow revenge and anger to rule your life; it leads to nothingness, something that Obi-Wan echoes to him in Rebels.
It is heartbreaking that Maul only found peace when he died and while he finally realized that Obi-Wan was never his true enemy, that drive for vengeance never left him. Even writing this just makes me want to bundle him up in a blanket and hold him tight. Maul carries so much pain, both with what he has caused and what he has endured.
I hope this new show doesn't disappoint and gives us a new perspective on our favorite Zabrak. If you made it this far, thank you for sticking with this long-winded rant. I was just literally pouring all my Maul feels into this unintentionally. I love Maul so, so much; his story pulls at my heartstrings and his relationship with Obi-Wan is genuinely one of my favorite Star Wars dynamics of all time. I can't wait to see this new, unexplored chapter of Maul's life! (Until then I'm in my Andor brainrot, specifically over the pathetic cereal man).

Raimon GO Trio: Growth
So I was busy answering an ask for AR, and then realized I got super carried away with it and didnāt really answer the ask anymore. Yet Iām also having too much fun with this particular analysis, so I decided to make it a separate post!
The ask was originally about Raimon GO Trio headcanons, and moments in which Original Raimon Trio saw themselves in the GO Trio. Anyway, things happened, and⦠oops?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The relationship of the GO trio is one based on growth, I think.
To start, I need to talk about the original trio. Endou, Kidou and Gouenji have always had a friendship based on equality and mutual respect. They were equals from very early on in the anime, if not the start, I think (itās been a long time since I watched it so Iām a little skewed on the details). Kidou and Gouenji were both established as phenomenal soccer players from the start. Endou was not, but he was the captain and that gave him a certain, status, I suppose might be the word, as well. The three of them have always had this sense of equality to me that the GO trio lacked for a very long time.
As for mutual respect; Kidou started on a different side, but he has very clearly been impressed by Gouenjiās skills since before the first episode even started, specifically challenging Raimon to draw him out and face him in a match, and he was relatively neutral to Endou but eventually started to respect him even while they were rivals. With the exception of the first two, three, episodes, Gouenji has always had a friendly relationship with Endou and (as far as I can remember) never fought his authority as captain, and heās had a friendly relationship with Kidou basically from the moment he joined the team. Despite some hostility at the start, Kidou and Gouenji have always deferred to Endouās position as captain. And I think we all know Endouās opinion. There were some bumps in the road but the three of them have always held mutual respect for one another, and their friendship has always had that respect and equality as its basis.
Shindou, Tsurugi and Tenma are very different.
From day one they were hostile to one another and that lasted for a very long time, and unlike the original trio they didn't even respect each other to balance it out. Shindou and Tsurugi considered each other enemies and just had a general bad opinion of the other; Tsurugi was cruel and sort of crazy, to be honest, and saw both Shindou and Tenma as an enemy, although Shindou was probably the bigger threat in his eyes (now I'm thinking, despite the Gouenji-Tsurugi parallels, it's also possible to compare Tsurugi and Kidou as they were both originally antagonists, but Kidou never seemed as bitter as Tsurugi to me (it's been a long time since I watched the originals, so I could be wrong)). Shindou seemed very self-absorbed in the sense that he took all the weight on his own shoulders, like he thought that he was responsible for everything and needed to solve all problems primarily alone. Tsurugi was a Seed and his enemy and Tenma a troublemaker and distraction.
Tenma here would be the exception, but that didn't matter because originally Tenma held the weakest position. New to a team, good at dribbling but horrible at everything else, younger than Shindou (which, especially with Japan's focus on age differences, really doesn't help the equality thing) and generally discarded by both Tsurugi and Shindou. Sure, he respected Shindou and he didnāt have the same hostility towards Tsurugi as many others, but it didnāt matter because he barely had a voice on the team. Sure, he talked a lot, and I mean a lot, but people didnāt listen.
The three of them were a mess no matter how you look at it. You couldnāt even refer to them as āthe three of themā because they had nothing in common, no relationship to speak of.
As we all know that eventually changed, and it kept changing. Tenma got through to Shindou, Shindou started treating Tenma, if not as a friend, at least as an underclassman - as someone he had a responsibility towards to care for. Tsurugi became a tentative ally to Raimon, and they had to put up with him, and eventually he switched sides completely (still kept to himself a lot though). Tenma gained more confidence in his place on the team. They struggled, they fought together, they had to encourage each other and that builds bonds. To be honest, I don't know when these three became friends, I'd have to rewatch the anime for that, but I think it took a while even after they initially set aside their differences. Even during the last match of season 1, Tsurugi still refers to Tenma as āāMatsukazeāā in his head.
(Another fun thing that makes them less compatible compared to the original trio - their positions. Endou, goalkeeper; Kidou, midfielder; Gouenji, forward. Defense, bridge, offense. Theyāre spread out equally over the field. The GO trio, though, consists of one forward and two midfielders; mismatched.)
Anyway, their relationship is constantly evolving. From enemies, to (tentative) allies, to sort of friends. I mean, thereās an obstacle simply in the fact that Shindou is older and therefore put in the āsenpaiā role (seriously, donāt underestimate how important age differences are in Japan). Then thereās Tsurugi being a pretty quiet individual. They might be on friendly terms, even call one another friends, but they wouldnāt be good friends.
Tenmaās and Shindouās relationship in season 1, to me, never really seemed like friendship. Tenma very obviously respects Shindou and depends on him and thinks heās great, but he also sort of puts Shindou on a pedestal. Shindou seems, eventually, very fond of Tenma, and to be honest I think Shindou is actually the one to call him a friend first; less of an age barrier for him, and Tenma is a bit too shy to declare his captain a friend first (seriously, itās easy to forget but especially at the start of the anime, Tenma is very shy). But especially as long as the barrier of Tenma putting Shindou on a pedestal exists, they canāt really be friends in the deeper sense of the word.
Tsurugi and Tenma, on the other hand, have learnt to work together and depend on one another by the end of season 1. Itās not very pronounced but itās obvious (especially when they use Fire Tornado Double Drive) how much Tsurugi really depends on Tenma (and accepts that!), while Tenma is just super friendly and nice towards Tsurugi. At some point these two became friends, but gosh donāt ask me when. (I want to add here: we see clearly in season 1 how much Tsurugi depends on Tenma, and while we donāt see that sentiment returned, I do believe it already exists at that point; at the very least, Tenmaās reaction to Tsurugiās kidnapping in season 3 speaks volumes.)
I havenāt mentioned the friendship between Shindou and Tsurugi much before, but thatās because theyāre really hard to pin down. The one thing that stands out to me is how great of a team they are together, even, or maybe especially, without Tenma. We donāt see the two of them interacting as much as we see either of them interacting with Tenma, but what interactions they do have often occur during matches - I canāt really pinpoint any examples but to me itās always felt like there was no real need for them to talk so much. Tsurugi goes along with Shindouās strategies always without ever asking for explanation; heās got a healthy respect for Shindouās mind, I think, and seems very good at picking up clues from him. Which, to Shindou, probably makes him the perfect āāpawnāā in his strategies, since Tsurugi is 1) a real ace of the team and 2) really good at responding to him instinctively. Theyāre very quiet together, and a very good team. They didnāt respect each other at the start, but once they saw eye-to-eye? Hell yeah, and I think that defines them for the entire series. Shindou never treats Tsurugi like an underclassmen, not like he does Tenma. When did these two become friends? I donāt think even they know - actually, I think they might not have been friends if Tenma hadnāt been there to be the bridge between them, but when it actually happened? No clue.
Anyway! Then thereās the next big change: Tenma becomes captain.
It always stood out to me that Tenma didnāt stop calling Shindou ācaptainā until Chrono Stone. I always wondered why Tenma was still captain in Chrono Stone, since Shindou was out of the hospital at that point and they never discussed the - what initially seemed like a temporary - captain switch in the anime. I mentioned in an earlier post that I headcanon that this switch happened because Shindou insisted on it, because Shindou didn't want to be captain and felt Tenma was better suited to the role. This conversation would've taken place somewhere between season 1 and 2, or potentially somewhere in the first episodes of season 2. That's also why Tenma switches from calling him ācaptainā to āShindou-senpaiā, and that's the start of the newest change in their relationship. It quite literally forces Tenma into being on more equal footing as Shindou, as captain to former captain. Obviously this switch is gradual, as we see him doubting himself quite a lot in Chrono Stone and growing into the position as the season goes on.
Now I have to wonder how Tenma and Tsurugi's dynamic would've changed in response to Tenma becoming captain. I actually imagine that Tsurugi had a very easy time with it; heād been following Tenmaās lead quite a lot in season 1 already.
Finally, season 3. It starts out pretty great, actually - their teamwork is great. One thing of note is that Tenma, at least, switched to calling Shindou āShindou-sanā somewhere between season 2 and 3, I'm not certain about Tsurugi - he doesn't often call Shindou by name but I think he already called him that? Or switches multiple times? - but it shows that Tenma is much more comfortable with Shindou than before. At least, until the start of their disagreement over the Inazuma Japan team.
Season 3. Damn, what a ride.
I mean, Iām sure everyone remembers Shindou and Tenma in this. Pretty hard to forget, really. Shindouās angry, frustrated, incredibly emotional and basically seems to revert back to how he was at the start of season 1. He seems to be taking it all out on Tenma and Ibuki; which while not fair is at least understandable. Tenmaās constantly disagreeing with him, someone Shindou believes should have the same opinion as him, whereas Ibuki keeps on challenging him.Ā
The funny thing is, this doesnāt affect their teamwork at all.
In the first episodes, itās Tsurugi, Shindou and Tenma basically doing all the work during the matches, and it is their incredible teamwork that gets the team through the first stages of an intergalactic championship, which, damn, is pretty impressive if you ask me. Theyāre arguing but still in sync, and I love that. The three of them have always been a great combo when playing soccer, whereas outside of that they definitely werenāt - theyāre perfectly balanced yet horridly incompatible. The contradiction is incredible with those three.
Something else I noticed is that, even after Tenmaās been captain for quite a while, he still follows Shindouās orders without question, and Shindou still orders him around without hesitation. And yet Shindou doesnāt overstep; heās very clearly not trying to be captain anymore, and in the instances Tenma thinks heās wrong, Tenma is not afraid to disagree.
Tsurugi, during the early episodes of season 3, is really the eye of the storm. While Shindou seems to have a pretty short temper around Tenma, thatās not the case when heās around Tsurugi, and thereās multiple instances where he asks for Tsurugiās opinion. At the same time, Tsurugi doesnāt make it any harder for Tenma, either; he really stays out of it. Lmao he basically saw Tenma and Shindou fighting and went āāoh hell no I donāt want any part of thisāā, so heās really the neutral ground between them (and then he gets kidnapped pretty quickly, soooā¦).
Of course everything gets turned upside down when they find out about the whole alien thing, and though Shindou doesnāt argue with Tenma anymore, he does put a lot on his shoulders.
Heās not wrong, per se, but way to put pressure on the kid! Which, fair, he is the captain, but Shindou, honey, cāmon. You know Tenma. You know how heās gonna take this.
So yeah, I donāt think that Tenma at any moment in Galaxy beyond the first and last episode is actually happy. Even when heās cheerful, heās constantly trying to keep a team thatās falling apart at the seams together - do you see the parallels here with Shindou in season 1? - or gauging their mood, or dealing with internal conflicts, or arguing with Shindou (and to some degree Tsurugi), or dealing with the stress of being the captain that has to save the entirety of humankind. Even when he's laughing, there's no way he's able to let go of that fully, no way he can be carefree. Despite outward appearances, Tenma in season 3 is so fundamentally different from Tenma in season 1. Thereās no freedom, no fun, no āwind of the revolutionā when that is exactly what his character has been about all along. He's restrained. He's pushed into a mold he doesn't fit into, by everything and everyone around him, and the ones who know him, who could've put a stop to this - they don't see it happening. An extra interesting detail is, Tenma rarely reaches out to his friends when it's about himself or his issues, it's only when they notice that something's wrong and confront him that he actually opens up. And Tenma, in season 3, has become a lot better at keeping up appearances - understandable, since the whole spiel is that he has to be the captain, has to keep everyone's spirits high, and he cannot allow them to see him hesitating and worrying. It's actually probably not a good thing that he learns that lesson, because it means it'll be even easier for him to smile and say he's fine and divert people away from the fact that he's struggling. And then to add to that, Tsurugi and Shindou, people he would usually depend on and let down the mask for, aren't there.
Y'see, in season 1, Tenma is never really alone - despite the rocky start, heās got Shinsuke and Aoi. In season 2, heās alone for a while before Fei comes and by the time Fei betrays him, heās got Raimon with him again. In season 3, Tenma is cut off from Raimon, pushed away by Shindou and Tsurugi, not opening up to Aoi, surrounded by a team that expects things of him as captain that no one has before, and Tenma is alone. And he has to deal with that. Learn from it. Grow with it. Find himself again, and he does. And that is the growth Tenma goes through in season 3.
To be honest, all three of them have their own stories in Galaxy, kinda like in season 1 but whereas in season 1 it converges from separate places to the same path, in season 3 itās the opposite - they come from the same story and then split up. Tenma with his learning how to stand alone; Shindou with letting go of his steadfast opinion; Tsurugi with, uh, getting kidnapped by aliens?
Not gonna lie, one of those three doesnāt quite feel the same as the othersā¦
Seriously though, Tsurugiās arc in Galaxy is a little less introspective than the others, I think. Now that Iām thinking about it, maybe itās about stepping up more? Previously he just went along with Raimon a lot. Heās a relatively quiet character and happy to leave the decisions and speeches to Shindou and Tenma - to be honest, in Chrono Stone when he was acting captain for one of the El Dorado/Raimon teams against the Second Stage Children, I was a bit startled before remembering that canonically, Tsurugi was captain previously. He never seemed to care much for the position. Like I said, heās always followed along with Tenma, and heās always been easy with following Shindouās commands as well. But in season 3 that switches - heās left alone, but itās very different from Tenmaās situation. Heās becoming much more proactive in trying to convince Lalaya that her planet sucks, that she doesnāt need no man to be Queen, and most interestingly to me - the whole development with him becoming captain of Faram Dite. He steps up in a way he doesnāt really do in the rest of the anime.
To be honest, Tsurugiās a hard character to pin down because heās so quiet and composed most of the time. One thing about him, though, is that heās got a major guilt complex. Just look at the whole situation with his brother, the fact that he blames himself has driven him for years before the anime even starts. Itās the reason heās with Fifth Sector. After Tenma and Yuuichi give him that much needed reality check, Tsurugi backs down a lot and stays quiet. I think, and mind you this is all speculation - I think Tsurugi is afraid. Afraid of making choices, afraid of speaking up, of speaking his mind out loud. He follows Tenma, and Raimonās, lead a lot, and while I think he does agree with them and doesnāt hesitate speak up after they already did so, I also think for a long while he would not be the first one to openly speak his mind. Heās been through a lot. Heās made mistakes, big mistakes (coughcough-joining Fifth Sector-coughcough) that you canāt blame him for considering the situation and the fact he was a literal kid when he joined Fifth Sector, but with what weāve seen with his guilt complex with Yuuichi, whoās to say Tsurugi doesnāt blame himself? Itās like he needs the confirmation from Raimon that yes, this is the right choice, before he decides to speak up.
And in Galaxy, that changes. Heās left alone, no example to follow, dealing with a girl whoās even more afraid of making mistakes than he is, and for good reason. Lalaya has the lives of an entire planet on her shoulders, and she reaches out to Tsurugi because she has no faith in herself at all. Kind of like Tsurugi has no faith in himself either unless an outside source - Tenma, Yuuichi, Raimon - confirms it. Suddenly this girl is looking towards him for his approval on her decisions, same way heās always done, and she doesnāt see what he does - that she doesnāt need it, that she can stand on her own. And Tsurugi committing to helping her, making that his priority rather than getting back to the Earth Eleven - and then, of course, switching sides and joining Faram Dite, knowing Earth Eleven wonāt understand, Tenma wonāt understand, wonāt approve, and doing it anyway. For the first time in a long while, Tsurugi makes a choice because he believes itās right, regardless of what anyone else thinks. Thatās his character growth.
This already is eight pages, but now Iām committed, lol. Two down, one more to go!
Shindou Takuto. Honey, what a mess you are.
I could talk for ages about the impact that his rich kid life and likely demanding family would have on him. Heād be one of those āāpiano lessons, Chinese lessons, fencing lessonsāā kids that get so much pressure put on his shoulders at a young age, to be perfect, to be worthy of the family name. I donāt think his familyās necessary neglectful or bad or anything! He gets to play soccer a lot, and itās clearly because he likes it. But I do think that Shindou is an incredibly intelligent kid, and heās always been pushed to perform the absolute best in whatever he does. Itās why he cracks under the pressure in season 1, when everything is falling apart around him, when the one thing heās got for fun, because he loves it - soccer - becomes just as stressful, or even more so, as everything else in his life.
Season 3ās interesting, because from every damn side, Shindou is told heās wrong.
A team of amateurs, when from basically his first appearance in season 1 itās so damn obvious how much the Raimon team means to him. Itās a disgrace, not to him but to his friends, and Tenma - who should by all means agree with him completely - doesnāt seem to care. His plans are denied, his ideas are denied, except during matches. And these amateurs are just trampling over everything he believes in, everything his friends have worked so hard for, everything he holds so dear and hurt for and cried for and they donāt even have the grace to care. No wonder he hates them. No wonder he hates Ibuki, because Ibuki doesnāt understand a single thing about it but still has the gall to pretend heās worthy of the position of keeper. Ibuki tries but not because he gives a damn about what Shindou believes in, but because of spite (I donāt actually think this about Ibuki lol, but I think Shindou would, Iām writing this from his perspective). The Inazuma Japan team spits on everything Shindou and his friends have fought and cried and bled for and heās told to suck it up. No wonder heās angry.
But, of course, things get a little better when they do start trying, for real, and keep trying. And then the whole hahaha-hey-youāre-actually-fighting-aliens thing gets revealed, and, well, new priorities and all that.
But still, Shindouās stuck in his own head. Still dealing with a team he may or may not even like (donāt recall tbh). And at this point, Tenmaās retreated into his shell again (which, fair enough! Shindou hasnāt exactly been supportive and Tenmaās insecurities are acting up! Thereās no way heāll be the first to reach out again if heās not sure itās welcome - but Shindou, at this point, has missed all of Tenmaās angst because heās keeping it quiet, so Shindou doesnāt know to reach out either! Which is also fair!! But theyāre just in a continuous spiral at this point, rip) and Tsurugi is kidnapped by an alien queen like five episodes into the whole space adventure, which Iām gonna say is a fair reason not to have great communication at the moment. Also, honestly, both Tenma and Shindou not realizing somethingās wrong with Tsurugi is a bit questionable but they both have so much going on in their own heads, plus the pressure of, yāknow, trying not to get the earth destroyed, so Iām gonna give them a pass for this one.
Anyway. Shindou is put in a situation where things are, to him, completely spiraling out of control. He never wanted any of this - in fact, he probably was super excited for the international tournament, to just have fun for once and now the whole Grand Celesta Galaxy mess happens, poor kid. He has an idea of how things should be, within the team, at least, and he has such a hard time letting that go. Heās bad at adjusting. Heās not like Tenma. He doesnāt see the good in people as easily as Tenma does, he doesnāt adapt as easily as Tenma does (the wind is adaptable, haha) to this situation, doesnāt go, āāokay, Iāll make the best of thisāā. Heās prideful, and used to, while not everything going his way, at least knowing his place, about having a certain image of the world around him, good or bad, and for once it doesnāt match up to his expectations at all, and he canāt change it, can only get through it. Iām very tired right now so I donāt think I can explain it very well, my words arenāt working (Iāll probably make a separate character analysis for Shindou at some point where I touch upon this again), but I think that Shindou is a person who needs some sort of control. His whole theme is music, being a music conductor, the strategist, calling the shots, and in Galaxy thatās taken away and he doesnāt know the stage, or the players and that might be similar in a way to Chrono Stone - but in Chrono Stone he still has the majority of his team, his support system, and in Galaxy he only has Tenma and Tsurugi and I just discussed why that whole thing isnāt working out. All he can do is get through it... alone.
Isn't it funny how that's a reoccurring theme with all of them?
Yāknow, now Iām reminded of his Kami no Takuto hissatsu. How he directs the entire team like itās a play or an orchestra. They do exactly what he wants them to and maybe thatās lulled him into a false sense of security. It might even go beyond that - his family demands perfectionism, tells him that if you just work hard enough, you can get everything, be everything, you want. That life will work how you want it to. But it doesnāt. He canāt strategize the entire world to his liking, and thatās okay.
And the fun part about all this? By the end of Galaxy, these three havenāt reconnected.
Oh, it certainly seems like it, because they concluded their own respective arcs. Tenma learns how to be captain and how to be true to himself. Tsurugi learns how to make his own choices and stop being afraid. Shindou learns to be patient and let go of his preconceived notions. They learn their lessons but they never talk about this. They grow, again, as they always do throughout the entire series, and rarely if ever do they talk about it, but why should they? They were together for the entire journey, right next to one another, so why should they tell each other what happened when theyāve all witnessed it?
Except in Galaxy they donāt. They werenāt on the same path. Theyāve missed things, and now theyāre, sort of, still assuming that the others will just understand because it always worked that way, right? So they donāt talk. And by the end of the season, they havenāt talked, despite the misunderstandings and the hurts. And oh, thatās an opportunity for angst Iām having so much fun exploring in my storiesš
Okay, I got like, so carried away with this. How did this turn into a character analysis for the Raimon GO Trio?? How did it get so long?? This was never the intention. To quote AR!Tenmaā¦

*drags myself through the floor and slams this down*
I present to you
FULLMETAL BARTENDERS AVIAN AU
Divine Nugget Au
(Rant as to why I chose the White-throated Needletail as Blurr's bird and some minor AU lore under the cut)
And that's not all! It comes with a FULL FLEDGED COMIC!!!!!
I spent a whole fucking week on this
I haven't done a comic in 4 years now, I can't believe this is my come-back XD. Though, on that note, know that I probably won't be pumping out any more comics - not any time soon, at least. But I do got more stuff planned for this au! If you ask about it, I'll 100% rant about it LOL
Tw// ā ļømild gore in the 3rd panelā ļø
While exploring the woods with his team, Swerve had an unfortunate encounter with a crazed hunter. In an attempt to escape, he got injured, but it seems he wasn't the only one caught in the crossfire...
.
.
Okay
So when you look up what the fastest bird in the world is, Google with show the Peregrin Falcom
But there's a catch
The Peregrine is only fast when diving
When it dives to catch its prey, it can go up to 389km/h
Which yeah, pretty fast
But when casually flying, it only goes up to 120 iirc
The Needle Tail?
It can go up to 170km/h
Some have even recorded going over 300! (Close to the Falcon's dive, I believe)
Additionally, these birds only fly. Their habitat is literally listed as "the air," and some even believe they sleep while flying! They only ever land to brood and mate, and then they're off again. Their legs are so short that, if they ground, they can't fly again because it doesn't give enough room to flap their wings.
It fits Blurr perfectly!
It also has a blue-ish colour pattern I can work with lol (it's green, but it looks blue, lol)
Though, also, he isn't 100% like the Needle Tail, just based off of it. I still want avians to be sorta their own species and doesn't have to be exactly like their bird counterparts cuz they aren't them, they're their own thing.
That said, Blurr is one of the shortest from Avians population, still.
They're pretty big.
Another trivial detail of the design!
I was stuck between having his arms be his wings or have them be separate
Until I saw a drawing where they had both, and I realised, "Wait, why isn't that done more often! That's so cool!"
So that's sorta what I did
It's mainly to catch small prey when grounded and to stay better perched up on trees since they're much bigger and having extra fingers helps a lot. Or when they're climbing against a tree to pick up fruits, it gives them an extra boost and can better hang from it
But they're pretty much useless besides that lol
Just neat lil design choice
Other lore stuff. The time in which the au takes place is vaguely modern? But with fantasy aspects? I still haven't decided lol
Technology exists, but not in the way we have it sort of deal, idk, this au is pretty bare bones right now, so go wild with it XD I don't mind it, I love brainstorming it with people. I know this au isn't as big or complex as some others out there, but it's fun, and I hope yall like it too fjsjajaj

AAAAA im thinking about Ingo in Legends Arceus again. They really fucking did that. Im so insane about it, like-
Okay. So. You have this preestablished thing in PokƩmon called Fallers. Basically its people who fell into the pokemon world from an entirely different universe. Sometimes theyre alternate versions of known characters. The one thing they all have in common is that they remember nothing from before they fell.
With me so far? Good.
Now we move onto Legends Arceus. Here we are, some hundred or so years in the distant past, exploring the wonderful land of Hisui when, hold on, is that Ingo? The train man? You're in the wrong time period, my guy! And what's that? His memory's gone? Damn that sucks, alt-Ingo got a real shitty deal when he Fell. Trains haven't even been invented yet smh.
Anyway, case closed. Just another Faller making the best of what they have. Cool, but nothing new, lets move on right?
Except. Maybe not.
You see, this "Hisui" region has a little bit more going on with it. Its actually the ancient version of the modern day Sinnoh region, and theres all kinds of fun little details tying the two together: location names, area themes, little nods to Sinnoh myths and pokedex entries, the whole nine yards. Huge gen 4 nostalgia trip. Theres even a bunch of characters that are just blatantly ancestors of important DPPt characters. And you betcha the pokemon match as well!
Yeah, thats cool, but what does this have to do with Ingo again? Weelll, turns out, two of those gen 4 pokemon makin a comeback just so happen to be the gods of time and space. And things have gone a bit fucky with them.
There are these things called "space-time distortions" going around, popping up all over the place, sitting there lookin like big, spooky soap bubbles, and spitting out objects and pokemon from all over the timeline. We're talking dinosaurs and data viruses. Because of these things, Porygons technically existed before the computers that birthed them. And while its never explicitly stated that they're how Ingo got there, how else do you suppose the New Yorker ended up in feudal Japan?
"Alright, that makes sense, but didn't you say he lost his memory? Isn't that kinda a whole thing with fallers?"
Oh yeah, right, thanks for catching that! I guess this was a bust after all. Time travel's not exactly new to the pokemon universe, and it doesn't usually cause memory loss, barring extenuating circumstances. (Ingo didn't turn into a pokemon, so I think we're safe on that front) This isn't even the first time Dialga's gone mad, actually! He must really be a Faller then. I mean, what are the odds that Ingo just tripped into a random space-time distortion, only to run into something entirely unrelated that just so happens to be well known for erasing memories, perfectly replicating the symptoms of a Faller?
Buckle up, this is where things get interesting.
So, when Ingo faceplanted in Hisui, he got picked up by this group called the Pearl Clan. They're this native tribe that worships Palkia, but like, under the wrong name, and they think Dialga's a false version of their god worshipped by these other natives, and they're actually kind of both right, except not, because they thought the were actually worshipping the creator god, Arceus, and it's this WHOLE thing. That's not important. What matters is that they picked up Ingo. Just. Remember that. Pearl grabbed Ingo.
Now, aside from the two big gods and their good ol' poppa Arceus, there's actually another trio of minor gods who took care of smaller business. Relatively. They like to rest at the bottom of three lakes spread around the region, and each one represents a certain gift they were said to have given to the world: Uxie, God of Knowledge; Mesprit, God of Emotion; Azelf, God of Willpower. When Arcues made them, the went out, did their thing, gave their gift, then went straight to bed in their lakes, where they stayed for... pretty much ever. Yeah, these guys are actually pretty chill. Apparently theyre tied for highest base friendship out of all pokemon?
Getting back to the Pearl clan, their camp in the Alabaster Icelands is actually pretty close to Lake Acuity! Way closer than any other settlements are to the lakes, at least.
I know what you're thinking: "What does ANY of this have to do with Ingo's memories??" Well, there's one more thing we need to cover about the lake trio. Y'see, there's this little myth about them, hidden away on a shelf in the back of modern day Canalave library. As calm and relaxed as they usually are, its easy to forget that they're still gods. Powerful gods. Direct decendants of Arcues themself, embodiments of the very gifts which they gave unto the world. The myth goes that, should someone be foolish enough to raise their hand against the lake gaurdians, they would quickly find that those gifts can be taken away.
Harm Azelf, and find yourself as still as stone, drained of even the willpower needed to move. Touch Mesprit, and find yourself in a pointless world, drained of all emotions, joyless and empty.
ā¦Look into Uxie's eyes, and find yourself lost and confused, fallen into a world unknown, without even the knowledge to find your way back to a home you can't remember.
...Yeah
Hisui is plaqued by Distortion, ripping creatures out of their proper Time and Space. Uxie makes their home at the bottom of Lake Acuity, just outside where the Pearl Clan makes camp. The Pearls found Ingo alone, no memory of his past, no evidence of how he came to them.
So you see now. How I might be a little obsessed.
Oh, are you still wondering if he's actually a Faller or not? Wellā¦
I HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA!
This was the first game he appeared in since Black and White 2, and he hasn't been mentioned since! His story is never expanded on!!!
He's probably? not??? Unless he fell out of an ultra wormwhole and into a distortion?? And the ultra beasts couldn't find him??? They literally NEVER hint at a possible cause for his arrival in game, I think. We're just. Left. With this.
What the fuck.

Look I'm just saying in the finale one of the brothers was forlorn and talked about missing Castiel while the other was happily eating pie and dismissively said that he missed Castiel too and then proceeded to continue to happily eat pie and maybe JUST MAYBE it would've made more sense for Castiel to profess love for the brother actively mourning him

Iāve been seeing people say that The New Avengers are actually a family unlike the original Avengers, BUT THE ORIGINAL AVENGERS WERE A FAMILY!!! THEY ALL CARED ABOUT EACH OTHER
This kind of thing also goes hand in hand with people saying that Tony and Steve were never friends, just colleagues and like, no???? The reason Civil War hit SO HARD was because all of them were trying to do what they thought was best for the teamāit wasnāt fully about who agreed and disagreed with the accords (BECAUSE EVEN TONY DIDNT FULLY AGREE WITH THEM AND WANTED TO AMMEND THEM)
There are also MULTIPLE TIMES from MULTIPLE CHARACTERS through the MCU that describe the Avengers as a family, most of all being Natasha and Steve
If Steve didnāt care, he NEVER wouldāve sent Tony that letter at the end of cacw (in which he literally calls the avengers family btw)
If Natasha didnāt care, she wouldnāt have stayed with the Avengers. This is a super spy with a history of pushing people away, she wouldnāt stick around if she didnāt trust them. they gave her a place to belong
And those are just 2 examples out of the entire 11 ish years (In the MCU) that they spent together
#anyways thereās my nerd rant for the day guys enjoy that#marvel#mcu#the avengers#tony stark#steve rogers#natasha romanoff#thor odinson#bruce banner#clint barton#iron man#captain america#black widow#the hulk#hawkeye#captain america civil war#ca:cw#cacw
