At some point, the fact that Destiel didn't become fully canon was not so upsetting because a ship I liked didn't get to be together, but that Dean never got to share that side of himself.

Dean Winchester is very clearly bisexual. If you don't think he is, that's fine, but to me, it is undeniable. He has crushes on men, flirts with men, checks out men, gets flustered by men.

Despite this, he is still very repressed a lot of the time. And that was instilled in him by his abusive, asshole father, who forced Dean to play the role of some macho man. In the later seasons, we get to see how with his father gone, Dean gets to be nerdier, he gets to do activities that are considered more feminine. He likes cooking, Scooby Doo, LARPing, he wore a night gown, listens to Taylor Swift, he's watched the movie "Frozen" and loves Dory the fish. He becomes a lot sillier, and it's clear that this is a lot closer to who Dean Winchester is rather than the man we saw in season 1.

But Dean never fully opened up, and I get having some walls up due to the trauma he's been through. But the fact he never could share this part of himself, is incredibly sad to me. I feel like he was getting there, but the show silenced him.

Dean was in love with Cas. And I think Dean also wanted a long term romantic partner. He needed someone who would always be there for him that wasn't just his brother. Wanting romance does not make someone weak, and is not inherently wrong. And after all the stuff Dean has been put through, he deserved a happy ending.
