♡ Common Trigger Warnings & How Tumblr's Content Filtering Works ♡
Tumblr media
I made one of these a few months ago but I have been filtering some content recently and realized that I was wrong about how Tumblr's filtering system works!!!! That post is incorrect!!! I will leave that other post up for a little while with a correction in the comments, but it will likely be deleted at the end of the month.
Tumblr media
♡ TLDR
• Trigger warnings are more important on Tumblr now because of the for you page. Tumblr will sometimes push posts of yours onto someone’s for you page without them having seen your blog, bio, or pinned post to know that your content may be triggering.
• When you filter a tag Tumblr will only block the exact tag you filter. For example if you filter just “ed”, posts tagged with “tw ed”, “cw ed”, “ed mention”, “ed implied”, or “ed related” will still be shown. This is why simple and easy to understand trigger warnings are important.
• Stating what the trigger warning is for is also important. If you just say “tw” we don’t know what the trigger is. It could be something we’re okay with or something that will trigger us, we have no way of knowing unless you say what it’s for.
• Trigger warnings that are designed to avoid filtration such as “tw sl3f h4rn” are not helpful. It’s very difficult to read and it is hard to filter. At that point you may as well have not put a trigger warning at all.
• You will not get banned for using the hashtags tw sh, tw sa, tw ed, tw ana, tw suicide, tw cut, or tw rape among others. It’s okay and desirable to use simple and to the point trigger tags.
• Below the read more I go into more detail about all this. I have compiled common trigger warnings by going through the tags and copying common ones I saw, I have also listed them out for easier copy and pasting if you want to filter them. I also show you how to access tumblr’s filtering page on desktop and mobile, as well as detailing exactly how the filtering system works.
Tumblr media
♡ Why are trigger warnings important?
Trigger warnings help people avoid content that will trigger them, pretty straightforward. This helps everyone stay safe and prevents unwanted triggers from appearing on someone's dashboard unexpectedly. Overall, basic things don't really need trigger warnings, but photos or more graphic or detailed vents about topics such as sexual assault, self-harm, drug use, abuse, or disordered eating are helpful to have trigger warnings on, especially in communities based around mental health.
Stating what the trigger warning is for is also important! Most of the time people just want to avoid a few topics for their mental health. If you just put “tw” then we don’t know what the triggering topic is. It could be something we’re okay with, or it might not be. It’s like if I handed you an empty box and said “hey there is something in this box”, you would have no idea what is in there or if you want to open it or not. Not super helpful.
Back in the hay days of Tumblr before pinned posts or the for your page, a lot of us just put common trigger warnings for our blogs in our bios and left it at that because people typically had to look at your profile to follow you before they would see any triggering posts. If we were using public tags (like community tags such as #jiraiblr, or tags for media such as #dokidokiteratureclub) we would usually put a trigger warning on that as well since it widens the audience that would see it.
The introduction of Tumblr's For You Page has made trigger warnings more important on typical posts because any post you make can show up on someone's For You Page without them having seen your bio or pinned post. You can put trigger warnings in a pinned post, but sometimes Tumblr will show random posts of yours on other people's for you pages without them having seen anything about your blog before or knowing that your blog is triggering.
This is especially an issue in mental health-based communities. It is not uncommon for people to like one too many coquette aesthetic photos and then have pro-ed things show up on their for you page with no warning. This is why lately there has been a bigger push for proper trigger tagging on this website if you have a public account.
Tumblr also will only filter out the exact tag you filter. This means if you filter only "sh", posts tagged with "tw sh", "cw sh", "sh mention", or "sh implied" will still be shown in full. This is part of why people get frustrated when you use trigger warnings that are designed to avoid filtration. Sure if you put "tw 4n0r3x!4" on a post, you have technically provided a trigger warning, but it is difficult to read and difficult to filter, so people who need a trigger warning for discussions around anorexia may end up seeing and getting halfway through a post before even realizing it has that content.
There are some commonly accepted trigger warning short-hands or alternatives people use. I went through some of these tags and copied trigger warnings I saw used below, but I encourage people to try and keep it simple and easy to understand when you put trigger warnings on your posts.
Typically "tw sh" for self harm topics, "tw ed" or "tw ana" for discussions surrounding eating disordered eating or anorexia, "tw suicide". “tw sui” or "tw suicidial ideation" for topics surrounding suicide or suicidal ideation, and "tw sa" for discussions about sexual assault are okay. You don't need to censor those on this website. Tumblr will not delete your blog for using those tags I promise (I've used all of those trigger warnings multiple times on this blog).

♡ Common Trigger Warnings
I went through the tags and copied trigger warnings I saw being used, I also listed out ones to filter so you can copy and paste them to make it a little easier. For the most part, you should not have to filter all of these, but you might want to go at least 5 or 10 down the list to make sure anything is filtered because I saw a few posts where the only trigger tag was like "tw @n@m!@" which... I just actually sighed typing that out please just put tw ana or tw ed next time T-T it's much easier to type and also much more effective.

Spaced out for easier copy / pasting.
For a lot of the sexual theme content trigger warnings, there aren't too many alternatives I saw people using. Most people tagged the posts with exactly what was going on, so you should be able to just filter out specific things you don't want to see without too much hassle.
Tumblr media
♡ How does filtering content on Tumblr work?
When you filter content on Tumblr you have two options: filtering tags, or filtering content.
♡ Filtering Tags.
When you filter a tag, any post tagged with tag you filter will be blocked, and Tumblr will show what tag is blocking the post from being shown. It will look something like this:
Tumblr media
If the post has multiple tags that you have blocked, it will not list all the blocked tags; it will just pick one blocked tag to show you. Additionally, it will only filter the exact tag you filter. So if you have tw sh filtered but the post is only tagged with sh, it will not filter that.
♡ Filtering Content.
When you filter content, any post tagged with the words you filtered will be blocked, and Tumblr will show what words are blocking the post. It will look something like this:
Tumblr media
If there are multiple words or phrases it will just pick one to show you. I recommend filtering tags over filtering content, since the content will only be filtered if someone says the thing that you filtered in that post.
Tumblr media
♡ How to add filters
♡ On mobile:
Click on the "account" icon
Tumblr media
Click on the little settings gear in the top right corner
Tumblr media
Click on "General Settings"
Tumblr media
Click on "Filtering"
Tumblr media
You can now add any tags or content you want to filter!
Tumblr media
♡ On desktop:
On the left-hand side of the screen click on "settings"
Tumblr media
Scroll down until you see the "Content You See" section. Here you can add any tags or content you want to filter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright! That's about it, hopefully all of that made sense and was helpful in some way!
In short: tag things with simple and easy to understand tags especially if you’re using community tags, you can filter tags or content you don't want to see, and we all have to work together to make this a safe space for everyone!
˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ I hope this was helpful! Stay safe guys, love you!!

Question for all my fellow fic writers:
For example: If you are writing a DC fic where the main characters are the Teen Titans, and any other DC characters are side characters; would you tag Superman dying in that fic as MCD because he is a main character of the DCverse, or not tag it because he's only a side character in that fic?
Obligatory 'Please reblog for better sample size' blah blah blah.

As a trans man I get really upset everytime I see a trans woman tagging something trans man that isn't about trans men. Like selfies or posts talking about how great being a woman is and how being trans is so freeing for women everywhere.
My dysphoria gets really bad sometimes so I turn to tags to get a little gender euphoria but when every other post is a woman describing her experience accepting her femininity I get a little nauseous.
I don't hate trans women by any means and love hearing their experiences I just wish there weren't so many posts tagged trans man that have nothing to do with our experience. Sometimes it feels very obvious someone just went down a trans checklist when it comes to tagging and didn't bother making sure it fit the tags.
Trans women keep it up being you and amazing and proud of your femininity just maybe watch how you tag things a little for the ones like me who get really dysphoric hearing people gush about how perfect women are

the thing about 'choose not to warn/use archive warnings' labels is that, functionally speaking, readers should treat them as though the fic will contain whatever triggering content might otherwise have been warned for. it may not actually contain the specific thing that triggers a given reader, but the lack of warnings should, functionally, be taken as a warning in and of itself, that you risk coming across these things if you do continue. and maybe people will be sad about missing out on reading a fic that might in fact be safe for them, but the same would be true in cases of people being extremely cautious about tagging in a 'better safe than sorry' kind of way.
Agreed, anon. And what I’ve learned in my own experience is that some days are better than others — some days I am more willing to be able to take that risk of not knowing, either because I’m in a healthier mindset or I’ve had more time to prepare.
So some days, that warning might not mean much to me, and on others, it’s a good reminder to check in with myself and see if I’m willing to proceed forward, knowing I might encounter anything on the other side.
As an author, I tag almost everything with the “chose not to warn” tag. I understand why that makes it hard for readers to determine if they should proceed, and I generally try to answer any questions folks have about certain topics.
However. I’ve received several asks and messages in the last few weeks from readers who demand — demand — to know the entire plot of a WIP or the ending of a WIP because they won’t read it if they don’t know, whether for trigger reasons or personal comfort. Even if it’s tagged accurately and in a way that’s up to date.
Sometimes, as readers, we just won’t know. Like someone said in the tags of the other post, if you pick up a book at a library, you won’t know what’s in it. The only thing you know for sure is that you don’t know.
We need to be more comfortable with the uncertain and with navigating a world that has triggers woven into it. Warn when possible, absolutely, but not make unreasonable demands of content creators to cultivate that experience for you.

Reposting as a reminder: You are responsible for your media diet online, whether it is fanfiction, original fiction, videos, illustrations, photos, news, or even social media of whatever stripes you choose to engage with.
If you seek out content you dislike, you have no one to blame for your displeasure than yourself.
Andif you are producing any sort of art or media, please be kind and use tags to warn the haters that they can avoid your work.
Ao3 is actually massively culturally important and very very good at being what it is. I’m so serious when I say that ao3 needs to be protected as the anti censorship, by fans for fans, nonprofit, volunteer run, expertly designed archival site that it is. You don’t have to read or like fanfiction to understand that on principle, ao3 is a site that should be defended.

i think we should remind musicians they can absolutely make up little stories for their songs btw. it doesn’t have to be about them at all. you can invent a guy and put him in situations to music. time honoured tradition in fact.

[Tim and Jason watching Dick as he fakes his death for a mission]
Tim: Man, he really is peak pretty boy
Jason: Right? Like, stop serving while you’re dying. It’s disrespectful.
Tim: For real, like, at least YOU had your priorities straight.
Jason: Exactly, I—
Jason:
Jason: Now hold up just a second—
Tim: I mean, you looked like shit when you died
Jason: THE FUCK, TIM????

this doesn't seem to be widespread knowledge around here yet but there's a big trend among dogshit content scraper accounts to grab a real photo (usually of ✨Aesthetic Nature™✨ or something similar, which is why it's relevant to me) somewhere, and recreate it using AI to avoid crediting the photographer. this can even trick people who are somewhat familiar with the subject matter if they're not paying attention but looks incredibly wrong upon closer inspection
Tumblr media Tumblr media
here is some complete garbage as an example. because these "photos" are not completely made up by AI, people into spiders know the species and will recognize their features without looking closely, getting tricked in the process. if you know spider anatomy and look closely though, both of those look like utter abominations. the original photos these two were based on are here and here, by the way
these just so happen to be things i'm familiar with and i would probably get easily fooled by AI recreations of plants or fish or whatever. my point is that if you're not an expert on everything that exists you're not immune to these, so i would probably recommend caring about photo sources unless you actively want to look at this repulsive trash

I actually don’t mind that “dead dove” has become conversational shorthand for “fics with heavy themes where you REALLY need to pay attention to the warnings”. such is the nature of language. what i do mind is when people tag their actual fics with dead dove and then give no indication of what they’re actually warning about. that is useless. that helps no one. that is completely against the spirit of the meme. i will not be reading that
