Fuck It I Love You | LN4
lando norris x reader, enemies to lovers, angst, fluff
summary: lando and y/n seem to absolutely hate each other until a dangerous situation reveals the truth
warnings: drink spiking, threats of sexual assault (nothing graphic, someone tries to take her home)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For some reason, Lando and her never got along. It stemmed from when they were karting together, all the way until they both got to Formula 1.
Now, at ages 21 and 23, they drove for rival teams and were always going wheel to wheel.
Monza wasn't any different.
Max and Charles were far in front, but she and Lando were fighting over the last podium place. They were switching back and forth until on the last lap, she maybe pushed him a bit too far on one of the last corners, securing 3rd place.
He approached her when she was making her way back from the post-race press conference, on her way to the media pen.
"What the fuck was that?" he demanded.
She shrugged, smirking. "Not quite sure what you're talking about."
"Oh don't play dumb. That was dirty racing on the last lap and you know it."
"I don't see how it's any different from what you did to me in Austria, or last year at Silverstone."
She could see his jaw clench, and she knew she got him.
"Maybe keep your talking on the track," she told him before he could reply, walking away.
That night she was at the club celebrating with a couple of the other drivers. She was pretty close with Max, Charles, Oscar, and Daniel. It made things a bit awkward with them when she and Lando were really going at it because they were all good friends with Lando too. But whatever, it was mostly fine.
She had been dancing and throwing back drinks until she forgot about her and Lando's feud. She's also pretty sure the other drivers got some embarrassing videos of her. Her current drink was eventually empty and she stumbled away to the bar, not telling anyone.
She waved the bartender over to ask for another drink, tipping them $20. If it weren't for the alcohol in her system, she would've flinched when a man suddenly appeared at her side. It was crowded by the bar, and he was pressing right against her.
"Hey baby, let me buy you a drink."
"That's alright, I already have one," she politely declined, hoping he would just leave her alone.
"Oh come on, don't be like that honey."
She twisted her neck around to try to spot the other drivers and when she did, she grabbed her drink and left. The man luckily didn't follow.
Halfway through her drink, she started noticing that something was wrong. Her head was spinning way more than it should be, she was sweating like crazy, nauseous, and her body felt heavy.
"I'm going to the bathroom," she slurred out to Max before stumbling away.
She didn't make it far before she was grabbing onto the wall to keep herself up. She knew at the moment that something was terribly wrong. She most likely had her drink spiked, and now she was separated from her group and incapacitated.
A hand grabbed her arm and she looked up. Her vision was too blurry to make out any features, but she knew it wasn't one of the drivers.
"You okay, babe? Let me help you."
"N-No, m' good, leav' me 'lone."
She tried to escape his grip, but she could barely move, her strength was completely gone. The man wrapped his whole arm around her waist, supporting her as he walked her out of the club while she tried to protest.
The cold, fresh air felt good when it hit her, but then she remembered what situation she was in. The man was dragging her along more roughly now.
"Stop, 'lease, I don' wanna go with you," her pleading sounded more and more like pathetic whimpers falling on unheard ears.
He just kept walking down the street, gripping her so hard there'd probably be bruises.
"Don't, please, leave me 'lone," she whined, eyes welling up with tears as she tried to escape his grip again.
He suddenly shoved her face-first into a building, rough concrete scraping her arms and face, and she fell to the ground.
"Shut up and don't move!" he hissed.
He yanked her back up and dragged her along.
"No, no, please, stop," she cried, nearly sobbing. She was scared, she couldn't feel anything, and she was completely separated from anyone she knew while some strange man was leading her somewhere.
"Hey!" another voice suddenly yelled, about 5 meters behind them. "What the fuck are you doing?"
Whoever this person was, they sounded pissed.
"Nothing man, mind your business," the man next to her said.
"No, I won't mind my fucking business. Let go of her before I smash your face in."
The man scoffed, trying to continue walking.
"I warned you," the other man said before suddenly she fell to the ground and she heard a thud of skin-on-skin contact, before a groan.
She was on the ground, leaning her back against the wall while her head drooped to the side. She couldn't see much, but she could hear the punching continue.
"Stop, stop, man, I'm sorry!"
"Oh yeah? Did you listen to her when she asked you to stop?"
Eventually, it went quiet, and there were footsteps in her direction. The man who saved her crouched down in front of her and put his hands on her cheeks, supporting her head. It was then that her vision cleared up a bit, and she realized who the person was.
"Lando?" she asked, voice slurring.
"Yeah, it's me. I got you."
She started sobbing, trembling hands gripping his jacket as he wrapped her in a hug, letting her cry into his chest.
"Shh, it's okay, I'm here. It's okay, you're safe now," he whispered to her as he rubbed her back.
"I-I was so, so scared," she cried.
"I know, I know. I got you."
Lando then used one hand to fish out his phone, calling the police. They waited while the police showed up, him trying to keep her awake.
When the police arrived, one of the officers arrested the unconscious man on the ground while the other rode with them in the ambulance to take their statements. Y/n never let go of Lando's hand once.
The hospital kept her overnight for observation after making sure whatever drug she was spiked with wasn't lethal, and collecting evidence and taking pictures of her injuries. She had finally given in to unconsciousness, and Lando was sitting next to her, holding her hand.
It was only when everything was a little settled down that he saw that she had nearly 100 missed calls from various drivers. Shit, he forgot about that.
He opened up his phone and called Daniel.
"Hey, man I can't talk right now," Daniel said right away, sounding panicked.
"Hold on—"
"Actually, do you by chance know where Y/n is?"
"Yeah, about that, I'm in the hospital—"
"What? What happened? Are you okay?"
"Can you let me finish my sentence? I'm with Y/n. She was drugged and I saw her on the street. Some man was dragging her with him, and she was clearly asking him to leave her alone. Anyway, she's a little banged up, but she's okay, nothing happened. They're just keeping her overnight for observation."
Daniel let out a big sigh of relief, said something to someone next to him, and then turned back to the phone.
"Thank fuck, we've been trying to find her for hours. Thank you, Lando, seriously. I can't imagine if you hadn't been there. What hospital is she at?"
After telling him where they were, he hung up.
Lando sighed, leaning back in his seat and closing his eyes as he reflected on what the hell just happened.
Y/n shifted in front of him, and he immediately sat up straight.
"Lando?" she mumbled, voice hoarse and still half-asleep.
"Yeah, it's me. I'm here. Do you remember what happened?"
She paused, but then her face crumpled, and she nodded.
"It's okay, it's okay, don't cry," he soothed.
"You saved me. I thought you would've just let him take me."
Lando's eyebrows furrowed, stomach twisting just at the thought.
"Why would you think that?"
"You hate me," she muttered, eyes looking down.
"I don't," he paused, hesitating. "I don't hate you at all. I...I didn't plan on ever telling you this, but I really like you. You're funny, you're witty, you're kind, you're fearless, you never back down from a challenge, and I love all those things about you. And I know you probably want nothing to do with me and you hate my guts, but I just need to get it off my chest―"
"―Lando, just shut up and kiss me. I like you too, idiot."
Lando grinned, showing the gap between his front two teeth that she always loved, and leaned down to connect their lips.
"Do you think people would get suspicious if we stopped being mean to each other?" he asked.
"Probably. We should just hard launch."
"I don't think our PR teams would appreciate that."
Later, when Daniel made it to the hospital, he was extremely surprised to see the two of them cuddled up together. He just had to take a picture.
continuation of this thank you again @mynameisjag for the inspiration, this prompt currently has me by the throat
Death of the Father, Death of the Son
The evening is dreary, rain pouring from the skies like tears. Typical Gotham fare to be honest.
This evening was the stage of the latest gala in the crime filled city, another fundraiser for something, or at least pretending to be.
Vlad brought his dear Madeline as well as Jasmine with him, he was planning to do some light networking but this was also his latest attempt to cheer his sweetheart up. The new experience might distract her a bit.
She had not taken the news well… when the search party found Daniel’s clone corpse in the woods.
It’s been months since the funeral, but her spark for life still has not yet reignited.
And in those past few months Jasmine has seemingly taken over Daniel’s job and has become a most persistent thorn in Vlad’s side, absolutely refusing to let him make any sort of progress with Maddie.
But this evening wasn’t about any of that. There would be no bickering between Vlad and Jazz about him aiding her in finding her lost brother. Not like she even needed his help, she and Daniel’s old friends were probably doing the best job possible in finding the boy.
And it’s not like he could tell her he knew her brother was probably being kept by one of the world's greatest mercenaries.
Revealing that would open a whole new can of worms he didn’t want to explain.
Maddie was mostly distracted at the gala, staring morosely at Wayne and his brood.
The sight fills Vlad with an insidious sort of anger, the kind that lays heavy and molten on the bottom of your stomach. She better not get it in her head to try and replace one bumbling oaf for the next.
Also… getting rid of a Wayne is apparently a weirdly difficult thing to do… Vlad would rather not bother.
And even though he feels bitter, it is rather nice to see Madeline cheer up when she gets to introduce herself to the boys. Vlad again thinks about his plan of conceiving a new son of their own, not to replace Daniel of course, the boy is irreplaceable but… well, yeah to replace him.
After all, is it really worth it to find Daniel anymore at this point?
—✧・゚: *✧・゚:*---*:・゚✧*:・゚✧—
The gala is uneventful right up until Vlad leaves the main area for a breath of fresh air, hopefully find the designated smoking area and have a cigarette (it’s not like those things can kill him anymore anyway) but on the way there he saw a shadow darting around the corner and he just couldn’t help himself.
If there was any illegal activity afoot, he rather be on top of it himself, that way he’ll know what he can pull and get away with.
It wasn't until he entered a room and promptly got ambushed that he thought that maybe he had walked into a trap of sorts, oh well, nothing Plasmius wouldn’t be able to fix.
Gotham is a city of freaks but none of them are on his power level after all.
Still, precious decisive reaction time got wasted because he’s thinking of an approach that would not result in him having to permanently silence his assailant. Murder is probably rough to cover up in the city that’s home to the world’s greatest detective and bribing the corrupt police force is such a hassle… a scuffle of a mugging/abduction or whatever gone wrong is much easier to explain.
Instead Vlad finds himself tazed, tazed of all things. Perhaps an ecto infused blast into the nearby wall isn’t such a bad idea after all.
But then he finds he can’t access his powers anymore, and a mild sense of dread takes root in his chest.
That taser… it couldn’t have been….
He isn't given much time to think about it as he’s expertly incapacitated and worked against the ground.
Vlad thinks he hears the faintest mutterings, something along the lines of “we do rely too much on our powers” perhaps it’s some veiled insult directed at his current situation. Uncalled for in his opinion…
Of course he struggles, he fights back. His attacker is way smaller than him, lighter and quick with their moves, whomever this is they certainly know what they are doing and Vlad hates to admit it, but without Plasmius he’s actually outmatched.
That leaves plain ol’ shouting for help.
An idea that quickly got snuffed out when a big army knife that crackles with sickly neon green energy gets pressed against his throat and a detonator gets shown off in his assailant’s hand.
“Quiet now, or I’ll blow this place sky high”
“That seems counterproductive” Vlad can’t help but snarl.
“aww, worried about me? there is no need I’ll be just fine, them on the other hand…”
the attacker puts a tablet down that shows a video feed of the main gala area with all the people milling about.
None of them matter to Vlad, but his Madeline and her daughter are there as well, he easily spots them too.
“What do you want, money? I’m sure there are better targets for that out there”
All of a sudden there is a strangely familiar staticy growl in his attacker’s voice, “I want two things from you, I want you to suffer and then I want you to die”
this is personal then… not good.
His attacker takes a moment to more firmly incapacitate Vlad against the floor before redirecting his attention to the video feed on the tablet screen. In the main gala area a big screen of it’s own has come down from the ceiling, usually meant for big fancy presentations (but those had already been carried out for the evening) and was now showing Vlad’s latest illegal activity for all the people to see.
Inside the room people are worriedly looking to and fro, wondering what rogue attack this will lead to, others are already gleefully taking to social media and broadcasting the events happening to the rest of the world.
Personnel are scrambling about to figure out what’s going on, and a couple Wayne’s have now subtly left the area.
“There we go, all out in the open. No more secrets”
Vlad’s eyes darted over the screen in horror.
“I like this right here,” his attacker zooms in on Maddie’s face as she’s realizing in real time that Vlad paid someone to kill her husband, “that’s a good face”
People are looking around and starting to notice Vlad is not among them anymore.
“You cannot possibly expect to get away with this, the Gotham bats are most likely already aware and hunting you down”
“I know-” His attacker shushes, “don’t spoil my fun, at least let me enjoy this show. Even if you somehow manage to get away from me now your life is completely ruined”
Vlad makes another attempt to escape, growling, “who are you and why are you doing this, how do you even know about half of these things-”
He gets his hands ran through and pinned down fully on the ground with the knives in return.
Vlad figures he must have made some noise but the painful pressure that his assailant keeps on his back is also making it harder to breathe.
“C’mon now, you always boasted about how you’re better and more experienced in every way. Surely you can use that big brain of yours and figure this mystery out, here I’ll help-” the attacker painfully twists his head to the side, “have a look”
It’s dark and the figure is still very much in the shadows but the first thing that catches Vlad’s eyes is the mask over his assailant’s mouth that’s black on the right and orange on the left, a rather obvious hint towards ties with a certain mercenary.
The dark hair styled in that one familiar way brings someone else to mind.
“Daniel”
The boy doesn’t hesitate to twist one of the knives in his hand.
“Don’t call me that”
“Danny-” Vlad doesn’t hesitate to correct even though it does come out rather strangled because of the pain, this is a bad situation and he’s not stupid, “whatever he said-”
there is a faint crackle and it’s only through Vlad’s still slightly enhanced senses that he hears the gruff voice talking to Daniel.
“Wrap it up Memento”
Danny glances at the live feed on the tablet. Proper security is starting to swarm around.
Maddie is holding Jazz close and appears to be talking to someone in charge. One of the Wayne brood has decided to stick with her, the eldest son. How kind of him.
Vlad is still trying to get Danny to listen to him.
Danny sighs, “I kind of wish I could drag this out longer, but this is fine” he twists his knee against Vlad’s neck and now properly restrains Vlad’s legs before pulling out something new.
“This is something my dad was working on before you got him killed, I was planning on sabotaging it and getting rid of the blueprints but... things change”
Danny puts it in the middle of Vlad’s upper back, “I’m sure you’re dying to know what it does. Well, it’s the Fenton Ghost Core Crusher. A bit of a mouthful admittedly. I’m still workshopping a better name, but at the very least the purpose is obvious”
“Daniel-” Vlad is starting to sound like a parent who is realizing that their kid is about to do something dangerous and stupid. It's honestly too bad that he’s not a parent and Danny is not his kid, otherwise it might have actually had it’s intended effect.
“I would have loved to see you deal with the full aftermath and consequences of your horrible choices in life but I don’t really feel like dealing with you as a full ghost so I guess this is it, goodbye forever, it really sucked to have known you”
Vlad has a second to fully regret Deathstroke taking Daniel and not taking it as seriously as he should have and then he’s too busy feeling what must be a supernova and a blackhole manifesting in his chest at the same time somehow.
After that he hears, or perhaps he just feels… a sickening crack and everything fades away.
—✧・゚: *✧・゚:*---*:・゚✧*:・゚✧—
There is a corpse at Danny’s feet. It’s Vlad, fully dead, the not coming back kind.
Danny figured he’d feel different, there is some vindication, and the slight satisfaction of a death avenged, but other than that he just feels rather empty, and kind of tired.
Danny doesn’t realize he’s getting a little lost in his head until Slade’s voice cuts through his mental spiral and snaps him out of it.
“Memento, time to move”
“right”
A part of Danny wants to stay, be found. As he goes invisible and floats right through the ceiling he takes some time to fantasize about it. Would it be a bat? or perhaps one of the security guards checking the rooms, maybe it would even be one of the attendees, they would probably scream once they noticed Vlad on the ground. A security guard would be smarter about the situation, but not by much.
A bat would probably attack him once they realized Vlad was already dead.
Later on they would put a little addendum in their rogue list at Deathstroke’s name, a little side file that’s just for Danny, affiliated with Slade Wilson, name; ???, gender; male, age; somewhere between 14 and 18, threat level; capable of killing people, something like that.
A few buildings away Danny catches up with Slade on the roof.
“Did you have fun? did you get it all out of your system?” Slade folds his arms over his chest.
Danny just growls at him.
“In that case it’s time to move on” The man is already turning away.
Well, Danny can agree on that, so he follows Deathstroke away from the mess he caused at the gala and away from his mother and sister.
And here is my idea for a Deathstroke affiliated Danny
Fighting humans was something Danielle was admittedly not too familiar with until being brought to Gotham. There had been other criminals that she’d had to chase off, police that she’d had to politely incapacitate so she and the others could escape, and even the unfortunate passerby that she usually overshadowed to lead them away from their hideout. But for all of those she’d always pulled her punches, knowing that she could do way too much damage and even kill the humans if she hit them with her full strength. Ghosts just tended to be more resilient than living people. Which meant she also couldn’t use any of her ectoplasm based abilities against them most of the time either. Both because of the damage it would do to the humans, and because she didn’t have a good way to recharge quickly. She didn’t need to end up as another comatose team member for the others to take care of.
Facing off against Deathstroke ended up breaking all of Danielle’s beliefs about fighting humans.
While Danielle still couldn’t use too much ectoplasm, she quickly realized she didn’t have to pull her punches. Jason was the first to technically engage Deathstroke, pulling out both pistols and firing mercilessly at the hulking man as he charged towards them. Yet for some unfathomable reason Deathstroke seemed impervious to the gunfire, the only bullets that might have hit him being slashed away with a blade like some ridiculous samurai cartoon. Jason ended up emptying both clips in his guns before Deathstroke reached them, and by that point Dick ran forward to block him while Jason reloaded. Instead of opening fire on Deathstroke again though, he holstered the pistols for now in exchange for his combat knife, not wanting to risk hitting Dick or Danielle in the crossfire.
Dick was definitely familiar with Deathstroke’s attacks, but that didn’t mean it was easy for him to fight the professional killer. Hits were heavy, and the combination of swordplay and martial arts was deadly to even trained combatants. He found he was glad Jason had insisted on staying, for while Jason had a much smaller blade he and Dick were so familiar with each other’s fighting style that it was easy for Jason to sneak in and target Deathstroke’s weak points, or take the heat away from Dick for a moment. It was something that Danielle found difficult to join in on, and her first attempt to punch Deathstroke proved unexpectedly useless since she held back as much as she usually did against living people. All it served to do was bring her in range for Deathstroke to immediately target her instead, his blade swishing over her head as she ducked with a slight yelp.
“Go join the others,” Jason ordered after watching Danielle make a useless attempt to help and almost get beheaded instead, getting Deathstroke’s attention by slicing at his blind side.
“I can fight!” Danielle protested, giving another test punch with more force behind it, only to have Deathstroke catch her hand. She felt his muscles strain under the impact of her punch this time, his hand pushing her off to the side just in case she broke his resistance. But as he kept ahold of her fist she just phased through his hand to pull back.
“Then stop holding back. He can take all you’ve got,” Dick directed, having been one of the ones who had initially taken Danielle down during the rescue capture mission. He knew she could hit hard. Stephanie and Damian had to help, and they only caught her because of Damian using sedatives.
With the others chatting between themselves, Deathstroke chimed in with a calm comment. “Make this easy on yourselves boys. This time I’m not here for you, so leave the girl and you won’t get hurt.” It should have already been obvious that his target was Danielle and the others of her team, for he all but ignored Dick and Jason when they weren’t in his face.
“Did you honestly think we’d even consider that option?” Jason demanded, quick to snatch his gun out of its holster and start firing again when Deathstroke caught Dick off guard enough to bodily kick him skidding several meters away.
“No,” Deathstroke admitted, leaving back to dodge the bullets for a moment. “But it was worth a shot.” He sounded almost bored, blocking the bullets with his blade once more before getting accustomed enough with Jason’s firing pattern to charge forward again.
As Jason lurched back, half blocking the slash with his knife but still getting cut in the shoulder, Danielle swooped in with a whirling kick to Deathstroke’s chest, phasing through Jason to get the best angle. There was enough force this time that Deathstroke grunted from the impact, getting launched backwards to tumble twice before righting himself and skidding on his feet.
“Nice!” Jason complimented, caught just a little off guard at the more Superman-like display of strength.
“Your fault if he dies,” Danielle shot back, already very uncomfortable with how different this fight was compared to others. She didn’t want to kill anyone, but if it happened because of self defense she’d have to learn how to come to terms with it. As long as this guy didn’t just turn into another ghost like Skulker. That seemed like a nightmare in the making.
“Great. I’d thank you if you managed that,” Jason returned, readying himself for another round.
“No killing,” Dick countered, reaching them again and taking his position near Jason.
“Kill him. Don’t kill him. You guys should work on your mutual goals,” Danielle scoffed, following as the two of them rushed Deathstroke this time.
It really was unfair that the old man was able to keep up with all three of them. Danielle hadn’t fought Jason before, but Dick had been the main one she’d fought before, so she knew he wasn’t a wimp. Yet it seemed the only real hits they were able to get in were the ones that she snuck in between the others’ moves. Back and forth in a broken dance of ill intent, stealing blood when steps faltered or reactions were just a tad too slow. Deathstroke’s blade sliced Dick’s forehead and bicep, and Jason’s forearm and thigh in addition to the previous gash on his shoulder. But in return Jason had gotten two good cuts on Deathstroke’s ribs and arm. That combined with brutal hits from Dick’s escrima sticks and Danielle’s fists made her feel like they had done a near equal amount of damage to each other. Perhaps it would be a duel of endurance in the end.
As the fight dragged on it started to wear on those involved. Danielle was pretty sure Jason had a broken finger, and the cut on Dick’s forehead was bleeding profusely. Deathstroke had learned soon enough that if he got Danielle quick enough she didn’t have time to become intangible, small cuts drawing green blood to add to the red staining the silver of his sword. And if she bled, that meant she could be killed. Even if the injuries stopped bleeding soon after they were made. He’d just have to hit her with something harder then, and for that he strategically created an opening for himself.
By now they had gotten used to him targeting Danielle when she was close enough. So this time Deathstroke made a feint towards Danielle before switching his attack towards Dick’s neck. Luckily Dick’s reflexes were fast enough that he lurched backwards to avoid it, but it still would have left a large gash across his collarbone and chest if Danielle hadn't caught it. And that was the opening Deathstroke was aiming for, his other hand snatching a small pistol loaded with a shotshell from his armory and firing it into Danielle’s chest. The startled half scream from Danielle was cut off by both the shot shell beads, and Deathstroke’s foot kicking her from the air to tumble meters away.
“DANI!” Dick’s shout was accompanied by Jason’s renewed effort to beat Deathstroke unconscious, wordlessly increasing his offense to allow Dick to break away and skid to his knees near Danielle. As Dick’s mind whirled through all the first aid he knew that might help the girl, his hands resting on her back as she coughed, he was surprised to see her start shoving herself upright after a short groan. At first he thought maybe she hadn’t been hit by the shot shell, or it had been a non lethal capsule. But as Danielle shoved herself to her knees and snapped her head up to glare at Deathstroke with a snarl Dick saw the green blood dripping from multiple wounds on her chest and knew it had been a dead on hit. It left him a little stunned as Danielle pushed herself to her feet, spitting a small amount of green blood that she’d coughed into her mouth.
“THAT HURT, BITCH!” Danielle shouted once she was on her feet again, phasing a hand into her chest to pull out a pellet and hurl it to the ground. The comment was unexpected enough that Jason ended up distracted, both by Danielle still talking and the words she’d used, and got brutally elbowed in the side of the head.  As Jason collapsed to the ground, movements uncoordinated because of the blow to the head making his vision spin, Dick threw one of his escrima sticks at Deathstroke and charged forward to protect his brother.
“So that wasn’t enough either,” Deathstroke mused, knocking the airborne escrima stick aside and intrigued by Danielle’s ability to still be moving despite having taken a full round of shot shell ammo.
“That’s it,” Danielle spat as Deathstroke blocked Dick’s next attack, kicking off the ground and snapping forward once again. This time instead of pulling her fist back for a punch, or otherwise outwardly attacking Deathstroke, she kept going, phasing through Dick and Deathstroke’s weapon and arm, wisping into his chest. Yet neither Dick or Jason noticed her appear on the other side, and neither had time to fully react before Deathstroke was abruptly dropping to one knee and plunging his sword into the top of his other knee.
“..... What the…?” Jason huffed, the screeching tires of the batmobile drowning out the rest of his words while he staggered to his feet, openly staring at Deathstroke’s display of sudden onset of madness.
“How much damage do I have to do to stop this guy?”
The question came from Deathstroke’s mouth, but sounded odd. Dick and Jason paused in disorientation, glancing around for Danielle before Dick made a connection in his head. Jazz had mentioned something about ‘overshadowing’ to Danielle, and some of the reports from the past two months had records of people behaving oddly, suddenly defending the people they were chasing or fighting their allies, and then having no memory of doing so.
“...Dani?” Dick asked, not completely sure, but confident enough to hold his hand out to stop Damian and Bruce from joining the fight. It looked like Damian had Talia on his phone as well, holding the device facing them.
“No, it’s grandma,” Danielle retorted with Deathstroke’s voice, understandably irritable. “Now answer the question,” she demanded, jerking the blade in Deathstroke’s knee slightly.
—---
The silence provided by the batmobile’s soundproof encasing was broken by Damian’s phone ringing as they hurtled down the streets, destined to meet up with Dick and Jason to provide backup if necessary. They all knew Bruce was the one who could best deal with Deathstroke, but if what they said was true and someone had hired the man without Talia’s knowing then Damian figured he might be able to put a stop to the matter without a prolonged battle. As much as he would love to stab Deathstroke in the other eye, that usually led to injuries to his family that were best avoided. Luckily his call was quick to be answered.
“Damian.”
Talia’s greeting was simple, but his name was spoken with more love than Talia bequeathed to anyone else. Other than, perhaps, Bruce. Usually if Talia deemed someone worthy enough to have her answer their call she only commanded them to speak.
“Mother.”
The returned greeting was just as simple, for Damian had learned the habit from her.
“It is rare for you to call,” Talia responded, and Damian could hear the smile in her voice despite the tense situation. They both knew Damian reaching out to her directly was risky. Other children would have weekly calls with their parents while abroad, if not daily. But their situation was much too different to allow for such a consistent opening. “What concerns you?” she asked, knowing he would only call if there was important, but not critical matters at hand.
“We have discovered the League’s most recent contract with Deathstroke,” Damian informed her easily. No need to question if she was aware or not, her response would tell him. “I must insist the contract be terminated, or we risk damaging connections with important contacts…. I imagine this was not of your doing,” he couldn’t help asking if she was responsible.
“What?” Talia’s answer dispelled the sliver of doubt Damian had. Her anger still ran deep towards Deathstroke; there was no one who remained from Ra’s time as head that would ever be willing to affiliate with Deathstroke again. She was quick to recover though, pausing for only a moment to align the facts in her mind, and research the source of the contract leading them to her people. When she spoke again it was with mild confusion only because it was her son she spoke to. “You are not the target, nor are any of yours. Why are you involved?”
“The targets are my wards,” Damian responded simply.
The words caused Talia to pause again, thoughtful as she browsed through the pertinent information on the computer next to her. She didn’t recognize any of the targets, but seeing their listed crimes made her understand what had happened. A delivery to a research team, tasked with potentially amplifying the Lazarus pit’s attributes, intercepted by an unknown group of teenagers. Someone on the research team had stepped out of line and ordered the hit, somehow getting it past the League’s administration without even requesting her authorization. There were several people now on the list to be severely punished, if not terminated.
Despite the welcomed revelation, the target location of this Team Phantom made Talia pause, questioning Damian’s words. “...You claim they are your wards, yet you keep them isolated from you. Far from your home,” she pointed out, and Damian clenched his jaw. She wasn’t trying to say he was lying, was she? Or did she think he was being manipulated? He wouldn’t put it past his mother to worry for him needlessly.
A quick glance at Bruce to judge his mood, knowing he was listening, and Damian answered after Bruce nodded with some reluctance. “They are to be relocated, but only once they are without assailants. Damaging the manor would be an unnecessary annoyance.”
Talia hummed, a smile tugging her lips as she was now curious about the ones who had charmed her family. But Bruce wasn’t within the view of the camera, and as he slammed on the brakes and the cover of the batmobile slid back Damian hopped out of the car. He wasn’t sure exactly what was going on, but it looked a lot more promising than he’d initially imagined. Deathstroke was kneeling with a blade in his leg and Jason pointing a gun at his head. So Damian showed his mother the state of the assassin as Deathstroke spoke with a voice that was his own, yet words that were not.
“I have the ability to overshadow others, and make them do or say what I want while they’re completely unaware,” Danielle explained through Deathstroke’s voice. “It’s not the most comfortable state, but I can inflict more damage if I need to.” She was responding to a question from Dick, but as Damian approached with the phone held so Talia could see she was the one that responded.
“Then kill him,” she directed simply. “Many would welcome his demise.”
“That’s not how we work,” Damian spoke before Dick or Jason could respond, gaining a faint smile of his own. “Terminate the contract… Please.”
This time it didn’t take long for Talia to sigh in compliance, a fondness saturating her breath. “Very well,” she accepted, “Release him, and I will speak.”
No one moved for a breath, but after Damian nodded once Danielle’s sigh was half with Deathstroke’s voice before becoming her own as she floated out from his form. She stayed close as he grunted in the sudden realization of pain and what his current situation was, but Talia spoke up quickly.
“Slade. In light of recent information your contract will be annulled. You will be compensated half of your payment for your efforts spent as of now, and if you persist you will be hunted by the League of Assassins. You can take my offer, or be killed now. Which is it?”
Her terms were delivered quickly, and while Dick’s face scrunched in mild confusion as to who among them Talia thought would be willing to kill Deathstroke in her place, Jason shifted the pistol in his hand slightly to remind them it was there. And he deliberately ignored the way Bruce’s eyes narrowed at him. Deathstroke was enough of a pain to all of them that no one would miss him. Yet it turned out to be Danielle who tipped the scale.
“Answer fast or I might start ripping organs out. You’ll be surprised how many aren’t strictly necessary,” Danielle added, phasing her hand into Deathstroke’s chest to prove her point. She was testy, but she felt she had a good reason to be. She still had to dig the rest of those bullet shards out of her chest after all.
Deathstroke paused a moment longer, having not quite been swayed by Talia’s words just on principle. But after taking a testing breath and faintly feeling Danielle’s hand in his chest he realized dealing with the half dead girl might end up costing him more than he was willing to pay. So he answered soon enough. “Done. I expect to see the transfer before they’re out of sight.”
“You’ll get it when I deem it so,” Talia responded curtly.
Deathstroke watched the screen for a beat, gauging if he could barter any further before giving in. “I should have known you hadn’t changed your mind.”
“You should thank Damian instead of wasting your words on me,” Talia retorted with a scoff. “If I had my way, you’d already be dead.”
“Hmph. I won’t waste anymore of your time,” Deathstroke huffed. There was no way he was going to even consider thanking the demon child. He should have trusted his mind and not taken this contract in the first place.
“Consider yourself lucky we’re still paying you,” Damian scoffed in return, nodding his head for the others to start moving to the batmobile. “Show your face again near any of the Phantoms, and I’ll reconsider letting you live.”
There was a hesitant moment of the others not being sure if the conversation was done or not, but as Damian started to walk back towards the batmobile, turning the phone to face himself again, they followed suit. Danielle released her hold only when Jason and Dick were a few steps away, all three of them eyeing the man as they moved. Bruce made sure he was the last to follow, keeping himself between his family and Deathstroke.
“I will provide you with a full report tonight, Mother. If that is acceptable,” Damian spoke quietly to Talia once he was far enough away for Deathstroke to be deaf to his words.
“I look forward to it, my son. Be well,” Talia responded, her voice softening again with her expression moments before ending the call.
Two thirds of the way to the car Danielle felt the adrenaline wearing off quickly, causing her to drop lower until she was sagging to the ground on her knees. Her chest hurt, but at least it wasn’t bleeding that much anymore. It should be fine to take the rest of the shot shell pellets out now, so she took a moment to phase herself intangible without affecting the shards. “Ouuuhh, that was tiring,” she muttered, flexing her fingers as the beads clinked on the asphalt and rolled away. At least she was still stable. Now she just had to get back to the others and think of a way to calm them down when she got there. Something she didn’t have to worry too much about, for Dick had paused next to her and as soon as she returned to a tangible state he leaned over to quickly scoop her up. Without a word he picked up his pace to the batmobile, hopping into the backseat with her after Damian took the front.
Jason was walking backwards towards the vehicle, keeping his pistol trained on Deathstroke as the old man held his hands up in surrender, and staying aware of his family and their guest. He wasn’t planning on lowering the gun anytime soon either, but once he bumped against the batmobile Bruce snatched the gun out of his hand. It caused Jason to snap his gaze over to Bruce with a glare hidden behind his mask, but he knew Bruce was more than familiar with the look. And this time Bruce returned it for a moment before subtly nodding towards the car. They both knew the injury to his head had affected Jason more than he was letting on if Bruce had been able to take the gun so easily.
With a soft huff Jason hopped into the backseat with the others, folding his arms and deliberately not looking at Bruce. Luckily it wasn’t too difficult to do so, for Bruce was quick to climb into the driver’s seat and trigger the cover to close.
“Oracle, send support from the Justice League to make sure Deathstroke is properly detained. I don’t want to hear from him again,” Bruce called through the comms once they were all safely inside the vehicle.
“Copy that. I’ve also rerouted Spoiler to Signal and the others. Orphan will follow up to make sure Deathstroke doesn’t leave before the police get there,” Barbara confirmed, extremely pleased the situation was handled exponentially better than expected. “I’ve also asked her to make sure Hood’s bike gets brought home as well.”
It was appreciated, and Jason gained a small smile before texting her his gratitude.
Armand wants absolute control, to the point of paranoia, which is precisely his downfall.
We are presented with two puzzles regarding Armand’s decisions, because logically, they are unnecessary: 1/ his killing of Claudia (indirectly or directly), and 2/ his memory wiping Louis in San Francisco. Armand doesn't have to torture Daniel over Louis' faintest interest, nor does he have to eliminate Claudia and Lestat from Louis' life through the orchestration of the trial, nor is he forced to wipe Louis’ memory in San Francisco. These actions ironically had the unintended effect of causing a rift between him and Louis. Here I want to argue that Armand took drastic, unnecessary, even risky action out of paranoia and his deep need for control.
1/ The part where Armand wiped Louis' memory of the San Francisco night - let's assume that he wiped Louis' mind without his consent. (This is up for debate - the show so far leaves enough ambiguity for it to go either way.) But why? Armand already won the fight. Louis apologized to him repeatedly, renewed his vow to Armand, and rejected Lestat by begging Armand not to call Lestat. That makes Armand’s memory wipe so puzzling at first to me, since I think there would be no need for such a drastic measure.
My best explanation is down to Armand’s personality - he doesn’t want even a slightest crack in the relationship, when what he wants is perfection. He doesn’t want Louis to remember the hurtful things they spoke to one another, and definitely doesn’t want Louis to remember that Armand’s words pushed him to go out to the sun. He doesn’t want Louis to recall all the cruel behaviors he exhibited while Louis was incapacitated in the bed - torturing Daniel, taunting Louis, calling Lestat. Armand was also extremely jealous of Louis’ slightest attention to Daniel, so that he also wiped that part where Louis begged for him to spare Daniel’s life. Those are why he wiped Louis’ memory.
2/ Another way Armand exhibits his paranoia is through the trial. The narrative shows us there is no need for him to kill Claudia to “unburden” Louis of her. Claudia was gone, off with Madeline, and had to be away from Paris out of necessity, effectively removing herself from Louis’ life. Armand, again, does not have to eliminate Claudia, especially if he doesn’t care about maintaining power in his coven and coming off as weak and ineffectual as coven maitre.
Yet Armand feels threatened by Claudia nonetheless, because she is competing for Louis’ love and attention. It definitely doesn’t help that Louis’ slit his wrist and let himself bleed out on the couch the night he turned Madeline because Claudia left him. (recalling the moment he contemplated sitting on the bench waiting for sunrise in S1) Louis can get suicidal and depressive over Claudia, but so will he if Claudia is put to death over the trial.
The trial serves a dual purpose - to eliminate Claudia (through death) and Lestat (through betrayal) from Louis’ life. It’s killing two birds with one stone because Lestat caused Claudia’s death by showing up at all, and then testifying against them. I think there is no world in which Louis would return to Lestat, if he ever loved Claudia at all. That makes Armand’s cowardice for inaction come off as a much better alternative.
Armand’s decision is not so much out of physical, circumstantial necessity but out of a psychological, internal necessity. Armand doesn't just want control, he wants complete control, absolute annihilation of the opposition to his goals and wants, which ironically will forever prevent him from ever achieving his desires.
I know there's still one episode left in the season, so I'm prefacing with: who knows how things will shake out. I'm holding off until the season is out to decide what I think.
But in the meantime, because it's on my mind: it's strange to me that so many folks in the iwtv tags seem COMPLETELY certain that Armand could've stopped the trial at any moment. That he's strong enough to take on the entire coven, in front of a crowd of humans.
People are citing the dinner table scene from episode 4 as proof he physically is capable of single-handedly saving Claudia, Madeleine, and Louis at any moment. And I'm just... not sure that's true? Incapacitating the other coven members - who were caught unawares in a moment of relaxation - for a few seconds isn't the same as being able to survive a fight against all of them if they have been preparing for it.
(We also don't know that Armand was able to survive sunlight at that point in time, or if he was aware of being able to or not?)
I'm not factoring in anything from the books here, and it might turn out that Armand DID mastermind it all, OR that he could have intervened despite his insistence in Dubai that he could not. But to me, anyway, the show isn't yet signaling him being a captive as a lie. We didn't even get the traditional Daniel-as-audience pushback saying anything about how he was so powerful, etc.
The show has many ways of hinting that something isn't true, and I just don't see evidence of those coming up wrt Armand doing his best, as he saw it in that moment, to salvage things. Maybe that evidence will come in the next episode. As it stands now, though, I just don't know that it's clear Armand could have intervened more than he did at this point.
Johnny's Training in S6
This isn't getting one of my full mini-essay treatments because it isn't that deep, but they absolutely dropped the ball in S6.1 with how they did Johnny's training montage with the kids.
Johnny's lessons are a pretty solid mix of 40% life lesson, 40% OSHA noncompliant activities, 20% Macho bullcrap. They're blunt, to the point, useful, overblown.
And Effective.
Like- there was the seed of a good idea with the pitching machine with the MiyagiDo balance platform, but they didn't show the training being effective, just everything Daniel hates in Johnny. Which isn't fair to Johnny.
Like where was the 'punch to the face' lesson in S1 or 'Cobra Kai will cheat, here is how you fight while incapacitated in some way' from S4. The good lessons where there's a clear point to it. S6.1 was just... noise so Daniel could be mad.
(( Art is commissioned from the incredibly talented ArtReplicant. Original story by me. ))
Greg knew Daniel was slowly ramping up the pace to see if he would reciprocate. Greg thought to himself that at the rate Daniel was setting the pace, neither of them would get up to full strength. Greg knew his capabilities. He knew that as a decorated SEAL, he could incapacitate most general fighters in short order. In fact, for nearly every tournament he had been in, he had to work to contain himself to not maim, injure, his opponents, or worse. So, when he had heard rumors about a gym where the best of the best underground fighters trained, he knew there may be a chance to find a place to fight where he didn't have to hold back. When he got the invitation, he thought maybe the fabled place was true. Then he saw his opponent. After that fight, not a single fighter would challenge him or fight him. He felt that his first fight, though not officially sanctioned or real, had completely ruined his reputation with the other fighters before he even had a chance to create one. But now, he found out from this gatekeeper, that it had been Daniel that purposely cut off all fighters from fighting him all so he could test him? Fine. Greg thought. You want to test me, then test me, but I'll be damned if I am letting you set the pace anymore.
Greg started to change his tactics and speed to see how Daniel would react. It appeared that he completely caught Daniel off guard with this move because he quickly put Daniel on the defensive. Daniel was forced to step back and try to create room so Greg wouldn't knock him out. Greg landed hard body blows to the pecs and abs of Daniel. Daniel tried to return a punch with his right hand, but Greg landed a hook right into Daniel's right pec forcing Daniel's body to change the trajectory of the punch. Greg grinned as Daniel struggled. Greg would be the one to pull Daniel's training out of him first so he could know exactly who he was dealing with. Greg was thinking possibly Green Beret, Ranger, or perhaps a Marine Raider. Greg smiled at the thought. Wouldn't it be rich if Daniel was once a Raider and would be forced to submit to a Navy SEAL. Either way, Greg thought, You will tell me everything about who you are first. Then, I will force you to submit.
Daniel was indeed completely caught off guard by Greg's change in tactics. It took all his defensive skills to keep Greg from knocking him out cold. He deliberately forced the punches down to his pecs and abs, but they were taking a beating and getting softened by the unrelenting force of Greg's blows. Only one other fighter in Daniel's memory was this powerful and strong when they first fought. Daniel had considered that fight to be a loss; however, Wyatt would say that Daniel won. Either way, Greg's power and strength reminded Daniel of that power. Daniel needed everything in his arsenal to last against Wyatt. Deep inside Daniel was elated about this revelation. Finally, he thought, an opponent to challenge me to the max. He looked at Greg, who had a grin on his face. Daniel knew then if he didn't throw everything he had at Greg, Greg would completely humiliate him. That was not going to happen in his gym...
What mental health issues do you think Terry has? Not to trivialize/make fun of people with actual issues. I’m just curious. So many people say he’s a psychopath. I’ve also heard people say he is Bipolar, a Narcissist. Even has Anti-social Personality Disorder, depression.
Nonnie, I am not a psychiatrist, and as such unqualified to diagnose anyone. I'm a historian.
Now, historians are pretty good at saying: "In these circumstances, people are likely to do X, because that's what they have done the last 20 times this happened."
Terry is part Jewish it seems, going by Cobra Kai, and given his age, his parents will have been through WW II. Which means there is colossal trauma there, especially for the Jewish parent. Given his last name, Silver, a likely anglicised version of "Silber" which you can find in many traditionally Jewish surnames, his father is the most likely candidate.
Terry's family is wealthy, yet Terry served in Vietnam. That is weird. Especially since he would have likely been headed to college and exempt from the draft. Why then did he enlist? When his father is Jewish and lived through WWII, and he did not flee Hitler (probably not because 1938-1968 is often too short a time to establish the connections you need to build not only a business but the kind of business empire that would be hung up on legacy, another one of Terry's fixations) then it's likely that his father served in the US Army. And where? Well, Terry is obsessed with Asia, not Europe, and hates the Japanese enough to be very crudely racist to Mr. Miyagi, so my guess is the Pacific. Dad served in Asia, he'll serve in Asia. Only that his Dad would have been thought a war hero, and he, a 'Nam vet, a morally corrupt loser.
The whole Cobra Kai "No Mercy" schtick could have been not so much a Vietnam thing but a second generation WWII trauma because of a too close encounter with the Japanese imperial Army and their attitude to POW's. No mercy indeed. Yes maybe Terry got it from Captain Turner, but that doesn't negate this theory. Maybe Turner served in the Pacific too. Note that what he teaches is Korean. The Koreans also suffered terribly under the Japanese invasion of their country.
Oh, and to add to generational trauma. If Terry's mother is not Jewish, that would not help because Jewish fathers who lived through WW II very often had issues with that, even when they themselves of course chose to marry gentile women, likely for protection from antisemitism. Notice again that his surname, if Jewish, has likely been anglicised.
Terry's nickname for Daniel, the constantly referenced "Danny boy", hints at Irish-American heritage on his mother's side. Very probably Catholic. And that, too, was not mainstream growing up in the 1950's. So Terry's a double outsider with a likely traumatised father, a desire to prove himself so great he enlisted at the end of a war that was already going badly, a war trauma all of his own with intrusive memories, a fondness for alcohol and drugs, which could be self-medication, he's also likely into boys and, later in life, he feels that he needs to hide behind a façade, again likely because of an intense fear of persecution. I mean he devises his own philosophy on how to, as quickly as possible, incapacitate enemies. "Strike first", if fighting is inevitable, right? And it is, in his worldview.
Also he gets off on causing people pain, either himself or by proxy. He wants people to experience fear and pain, maybe in a perverse desire to connect. War vets, be it WWI or later, often talk about an intense disconnect to people who have not been through crippling pain and fear. So if he wants to get close to people, he needs to make sure they can relate to him, yeah? How does he do that? By inflicting pain and fear. On Daniel. On his Cobra Kai 'children'.
And that, I think, is What Is Wrong with Terry Silver.
Does Terry Silver have a feet kink?
---
Feet kink, hands kink, legs kink — whatever type of kink.
I feel Terry Silver’s got kinks to spare in any case (a great many of them rather dark).
I think whatever’s innately sensitive and necessary on a human body, much like feet are, is naturally something Terry relishes in because in hurting them or somehow tampering with them (Hey, he did it to Daniel. First went about hurting him and them attempting to pretend to fix his feet so he can go about hurting them some more) he automatically renders the toughest owner weak. Unbalanced. Exposed and sensitive. Reliable on help. On rest. In the meanwhile, open to ambush. Defeat. Quite literally struggling to walk. Incapacitated, in some cases. Maybe even left something of an invalid, if he ponders being particularly cruel — after all, it was the infamous, mythical heel that felled Achilles, the greatest warrior of all the time. And for a sadist like Terry? How can the knowledge of that not bleed into something of a (admittedly rather sick) paraphilia? Into something disgusting and lecherous he delights in purely from a combative point of view where hurting an enemy like that is always a plus and from a sexual point of view too, where knowing that a well placed kick to the feet can send someone flying to their knees and limping for weeks afterwards, if not longer --- something that is innately humiliating and humbling. Battle and sex intermingle for Terry. Often can be a prelude and an epilogue to one another in the right circumstances. The things that thrill him in a fight and often the things that thrill him when fucking.
He’ll hurt people’s legs. Feet. Arms. Their whole body.
It’ll be a tactical combat choice as much as it can be an erotic fixation.
Or just him being plain malicious.
Seeing a weakness and hitting it.
Cassandra Cain Reading Guide Part 5: The Search for a Well-Written Character.
Tumblr media
So you want to be brave and read more Cass? To read the journey in “full.” The bad along with the good. To know THE FULL STORY. But with it comes pain. Horribly badly written pain. Well-- I warned you.
Part I reading guide you can find here.
Part II reading guide (Modern) you can find here.
Part III reading guide (Random) you can find here.
Part IV reading guide (Alternate versions) you can find here.
Tumblr media
Batman: City of Light #1-8
So you want to read the worst tale of Cass as Batgirl during her prime years not found in her ongoing (1999-2006)? This is the story for you! You have Cass drawn in an oversexualized manner when as Batgirl. You have covers where looking at the poses they put Cass thru make you question things.
You have a subplot with Cass that has her dating a namely boy but goes thru PTD due to the abuse David Cain inflicted upon her.
It's surprising (or maybe not for good reason) how many don't truly remember the existence of this mini-series at times.  Sadly, maybe it's best to not fully dig up this one unless you're truly brave in reading what lies within it.
Robin #148-151 aka Robin OYL.
Tumblr media
So you read all of Cassandra's Vol. 1 ongoing and wonder what was she up too after it ended? Well, here's your answer. I must warn you even with the gorgeous art you will find only anger and pain when reading these issues.
More if you decide to randomly read #152 as well.  This arc begins Cassandra's "supervillain"/dragon lady phase. That lasted from 2006-2007. It will truly tick you off watching DC chuck Cass to some truly awful characterization. The problems here are all over the place. A newly minted comic book writer being thrown to the wolves of fans that some still haven’t forgiven him to this day (to which writer Adam Beechen has teased).
Supergirl #14
Tumblr media
The issue probably has the best written evil Cass among all you'll find here. She's menacing, a threat, and-- obviously had just watched the Empire Strikes Back. Because she uses basically lightsabers to fight Kara.
So why is it here? Well, um.. the way Kara defeats Cass in this is-- a thing.  A thing you never knew Kryptonians could do until this issue. Also, the way it happens is kind hilariously in a-- why did Cass have to be in that position on Kara? Instead, you know keep her distance? Likewise the revelation that Bruce/Tim know where Cass is hiding out and do-- NOTHING.
    Teen Titans #42-47 (Titans East)
Tumblr media
- Due to the backlash toward Robin OYL, DC answered with this story. Geoff Johns attempts to “fix” the evil Cass mess with her own "fearbug retcon" aka Slade drugged her up with his supersoldier serum. That’s why she’s evil and acting like a stereotype.
The problem is, yeah besides the panel above the story is a mess. The creative team (Johns and artist Tony Daniels) book it by #44 leaving an entirely new creative team to finish this story (poor Adam Beechen’s first rehab of the character)-- and it shows.
By stories’ end you’ll be pulling  your hair at what was the entire point of this story?
World War III #2, 4
Tumblr media
-  This 52 event comic fills the gaps created in "Titans East" by further retconning OYL (this time Batman: Face to Face), saying it was actually Cass who was defending Gotham (with Alfred's assistance) not Harvey Dent only did some things (but took the glory). While Slade plays devil on Cassandra's shoulder.
The next issue shows Cass for a few panels before we see Slade sniping Cass and incapacitating her. Given what we know “Titans East” we know what will follow: him drugging her and-- causing the whole evil phase to begin.
Yeah. -_-
Robin #160-162 (Cassandra shows up in #161-162)
Tumblr media
-  The arc concludes her supervillain phase by also setting up the final arc for the Robin writer Adam Beechen at that time (she funds the young meta Dodge to steal a steroid that her “employer” wants (we later find out to be both Deathstroke and David Cain)..
In the final part to the story, she kills the corrupt CEO who originally created the drug (and tested it on a Gotham Street Gang) in front of Tim after he fails to bring crook to justice.
Given the proximity of release. Many readers at the time thought this story took place prior to “Titans East”. In actuality, it takes place after. The act of killing the CEO snaps Cass back.
Black Canary #1 (2007)
Tumblr media
- Remember in Part III when talking about B&O, Green Arrow’s beef with Cass? This is that comic. Cassandra only appears in this panel above as it is clearly stated she has abandoned her faction of the League of Assassins and being EVIL. The villains of this series are some of her League remnants targeting Sin the child Dinah adopted to be the next “One Who is All”.
To make sure Sin never has such a target ever on her back. Dinah gives her a new life away. There is the journey that will lead you into Batman & the Outsiders.
There are BAD stories that involve Cass (Batman #81, Future State: Gotham #15-18, Batgirls #7-8). But I dare you to only search for them if you will is truly strong. But I suggest to simply ignore them. You’re better off mentally. However there is ONE painful tale I do wish to add to this list:
Tumblr media
Detective Comics #1029-1032
- If your a fan of the Bat-Family and not Bruce/Damian this story is absolute garbage. After a LONG career of writing Batman or Bat-Family books (namely Nightwing and Robin) writer Pete Tomasi churns out an awful tale.
This is the ONLY tale, Tomasi ever wrote Cass in (and she jobs throughout it). The writing is just NOT GOOD as Cass acts OOC thru the whole arc. Ironically, this arc rehabs Damian from prior heelish turn in Teen Titans (oh irony).
The only other reason to even read this story? Artist Bilquis Evely. Her art is exceptional and she draws an amazing Cass in just two issues (#1030-1031). But that’s just it. If you’re a fan of Cass (or anyone above) you’ll just grit your teeth at the boneheaded moves they all do in this arc just so Bruce/Damian look good.
Tumblr media
Future State Gotham #15-18
- You’d think a “Battle for the Cowl II” (Jace Fox, Jason Todd, Hush, Damian Wayne, Dick Grayson, and Bruce Wayne) would make for a “good” story. No. No it is not.
Whatever “good will” this series had ends on the most batshit insane story that’ll be forgotten by most save those who read it. Dick is fully a villain in this arc (even if he’s painted a tragic hero) who abuses a drug (so he can see the future), and beats up who’re trying to pull him out of this rut.
Damian is possessed by a demon (Joe Chill, I’m not kidding) and because of it Hush (posing as Bruce) tries to use him to kill Bruce, Jace, and Jason by tricking the son of Batman into thinking they’re the Batmen from the Grant Morrison run that “doomed” Gotham.
Cass’s only reason in this story is to job. Somehow her, Duke (at the height of his powers in this universe), an older Harper Row (introduced in this arc to job), Babs, Stephanie, Tim, and Kate Kane all are defeated because Dick knows everything.
Again, the story is just--- a thing to behold. The ending is crazy. Dick getting a redemption feels like complete ass (after all he did in the prior issues). Just when you’re thinking maybe we’ll get a Bat-Family assist when Hush unleashes an army of Talons (he leads the Court of Owls) on Damian, Dick, Jace, Talia, Babs, Bruce, and two others. Nope Dick sacrifices himself to “save” the day.
Ugh.
- Batman/Catwoman: Gotham War Event -
Tumblr media
Batman/Catwoman: Battle Lines #1 (appears)
Batman #137 (appears)
Catwoman #67 (doesn't appear)
Batman #138 (doesn't appear)
Catwoman #68 (doesn't appear)
Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War – Scorched Earth #1 (appears)
-  One of the worst Batman events in decades, Gotham War you have to read to believe in how awful the writing is within it. The main characters' motivations are sketchy if best. No character comes away clean or of sound mind in the story.
The only redeeming qualities of the event are the art and the Gotham War Red Hood #1-2 mini-series that tie into the event.
Other than that?
AVOID THIS COMIC unless you wish to wrack your brain with PAIN.
Cass within the event is no different.  The character is given 0 motivation or agency within the event. She's basically a cardboard standee for Bruce to showcase his increasing mental issues (pertaining to that Batman run).
Cass within the event is no different.  The character is given 0 motivation or agency within the event. She's basically a cardboard standee and serves only to prop Zur's influence overtaking Bruce (pertaining to that Batman run).
Nothing more.
Question about the vampire powers in the show. (love all your posts, they have been super helpful!) I have only read up to QOTD, but at that point, Lestat was already powerful enough to withstand the sun because he drank from Akasha, right? How come that's not the case in the show? Shouldn't he already be functionally immortal? It's been awhile since I read any of the books but what they do to him in ep 7 really shouldn't incapacitate him for very long...which makes me wonder if they have worse planned for him later on
Hey nonny!
So glad you like all the posts :)) Glad to help! Little spoiler for the next book you'll (maybe^^) read!
Ok, so no, he was not powerful enough to withstand the sun before QotD. He (kinda) doubted he was after, even, since he (tells himself at least) that he is committing suicide in Tale of the Body Thief. (Even though he also admits that he doubted it would be enough, deep down.) Lestat has two "Akasha-encounters" - I believe they left the first encounter in The Vampire Lestat more or less intact, only adapted to the new timeline. Rolin Jones said in the podcast that QotD was still to come, as well as TotBT. So that event has not been shown yet. (It likely has already happened in modern Dubai though.) And while the first encounter was a severe power-up, it was the second one that kicked him out the stratosphere, power-wise. He likely became functionally immortal then.
Lestat reminisces in The Vampire Lestat that Claudia probably would have succeeded without that first boost by Akasha and Marius. But you are right, they left him... errr... "unattended" for far too long, he was too strong already for a "simple" death like that - if that is what happened. Which is... unlikely imho.
Claudia's recorded words do not match, the pages detailing the fight with Lestat are cut out. Louis is fabricating a story, for himself or for Daniel is obviously open for debate, and it pulls everything we got to see into doubt. (There was a very good Gizmodo article on this here.)
There was also that bts photo of them finding the swamp location... it might have been a ruse (this show is exceptionally good in toying with us on all levels (I adore that tbh)), but then we have only half the story, to quote Armand. If you go by the book then we... might still get to see/hear the "true" fight. I'm not sure if they'll show us or if they'll imply it. But either way Lestat will have things to do in the second season. I believe his arc with what was will likely be expanded, as well as what happened in Paris. If that is worse... or if it is worse what really happened at Rue Royale... I don't know. It probably was for Louis. Will be, too. The scene in the book was terrible, worse indeed than what we got to see, since Louis drenched that scene in Lestat's acceptance. Lestat in the books begs Louis to put him into his coffin and calls out to him 11 times... and Louis doesn't.
Spider-Man Read-Through 023: My Friend... My Foe? (ASM 134-137)
MASTERPOST
Those issues have everything...
Tumblr media
It's all been leading up to this event, folks. Don't worry: I always find a way to make things gay.
Just as last issue (GSSM 1), ASM #134 starts on a boat. It's holidays for Peter, Liz and MJ. Surely nothing can go wrong in those 8 hours! Oh, and Flash is also there, looking as pretty as ever. What about Harry? Oh, he has more important stuff to do :-)
Tumblr media
The Tarantula, one of my favorite villains if only for his great design, hijacks the boat with two of his companions.
Tumblr media
Underneath his brown jacket, Peter has a green shirt and blue pants that go wonderfully well together. Oh my, you think the shirt's color might be foreshadowing for later, just as Spidey fighting a similarly-patterned foe? Hmm!
Tumblr media
A civilian is saved, but Flash is starting to have a few theories, not regarding the suspiciously-absent Jackal or Harry's whereabouts, but rather about Spidey's identity...!
Spidey has no more webs and thus tries to be a good boy and get a cab, but New Yorkers are all acerbate and he ends up resorting to the traditional method. That's comedy we haven't seen before, nice!
So Spidey goes back to his apartment, and what had to happen, happens:
Tumblr media
*Did* Harry always suspect that Peter was Spidey? Hmm, I wonder.
Anyway, please note Harry and Peter's shirt is exactly the same color. Is Harry's underwear blue to complete the parallels?
The issue ends with a surprise entrance from the Punisher, surprise because Spidey's been incapacitated by the Tarantula.
In the reader's letters, Harry Daniels thinks the Jackal is actually Harry. I don't know about that one, chief. The team also says the Punisher "will be back soon"... a few pages before he actually appears, hahaha.
Time for issue #135!
The Punisher eventually recognizes Spidey is a good guy, but not before the Tarantula leaves. They plan a meeting, and then Spidey has to go.
Tumblr media
Flash has a lot of stuff to ask Spidey, but the latter escapes by water... and comes back as Peter.
Tumblr media
All's well that ends well.
Tumblr media
Well, almost. See, Harry has a hard time handling how handsome his roommate. Which, understandable. I will point out for all Parksborn shippers that Peter didn't just show his head, no, he pushed the curtain to show his whole body--his whole *naked* body. He's that comfortable with Harry. Now, if that doesn't scream physical intimacy, I don't know what will.
Tumblr media
Hide those muscled legs of yours, you slütt.
Tumblr media
Speaking of which, here's what Frank Castle wanted to show to our hero: smutty pictures of one Anton Miguel Rodriguez (misspelled as Rodriquez and then Rodriques on the same page). Turns out the Punisher wished to uphold a big tradition in male spaces: stag films.
What were stag films, you ask?
You should check the Wikipedia article about that, but basically, imagine tons of dudes watching e r o t i c movies together in a big room and cheering each other.
I particularly love this part:
Tumblr media
So yeah, that's pretty gay, and absolutely fascinating to my eyes. The big question I have, though, is whether there was a female equivalent. I couldn't find one, but I can't imagine that no woman in those times thought about making that kind of film too and/or sharing it to an all female-audience, probably much more discreetly than the above. It's a truly fascinating subject to me. Was this an excuse to infodump lore on you? Maybe. But I'm half-making that joke, because this scene between Spidey and the Punisher is still a bit gay. Yes, I see homosexuality (and or bisexuality) everywhere, you should know this by now.
I'm just saying, the Punisher didn't have to show such hot photos of a revolutionary. It was a choice. Everything is a choice.
They get rid of the Tarantula, all is well that ends well.
Oh wait.
Tumblr media
Ackchuallly, we're gonna have to wait till--next line! Life in 2023 isn't so bad after all.
Tumblr media
Time for the cover that made me buy the 1974 collection at the time!
Tumblr media
The issue opens with Peter and MJ on a date and I can't believe that I recognized (visually, not nominally) the place they are. Ross Andru, devs of Insomniac, y'all are incredible.
Also, MJ's outfit is really groovy, love it for her.
Tumblr media
Yes, MJ, objectify the fuck out of him!!!!! You go girl!!!!
In fact, she goes so hard that the door and the apartment inside explode.
Tumblr media
So Peter and Harry have been in this apartment from #47 to #136. Almost 90 issues!
Please note that Peter's wearing green all over his body.
MJ goes to the hospital, but she's fine. Peter, however, is worried and goes to one of the Goblin's old warehouse. Nothing seems suspicious, after all, everything's covered in dust...
Tumblr media
... except that Spidey taught a lot of us that something like that even existed. Smart thinking, tiger!
The wait is long, but eventually, he shows up.
Tumblr media
Peter is not amused by the discovery that Harry's been training for this confrontation, whereas he expected his foe to just be an average Joe. It's surprisingly easy to imagine Harry training at the gym and trying to avoid having... unnecessary feelings about his (former) best friend.
Tumblr media
Edgeworth knows aaaaall about those.
I think seeing Peter and Harry fight in SM3 fueled my taste in fiction, and those issues confirmed it.
During the fight, Harry rambles about how once Spidey (Peter, really) is dead, he'll finally be able to do his own thing, free to live his own life again, to seek his own glory. Ooh, the daddy issues...!
In the end, Harry escapes and Peter is very worried. He's also a dick to Betty, but who knows, maybe it's part of his master plan...
We start the last issue, #137, the best way possible (after a quick Goblin-related prologue):
Tumblr media
...with gorgeous colors!
Peter eventually returns to the hospital and...
Tumblr media
Oh! Those pants. There we are, I guess, huh! This is *the* era. Liz has a great outfit, Flash too, but the real champion here is naturally Robertson, whose suit I'm jealous of. By the way, Peter's not wearing green anymore--at all!
He quickly leaves though when MJ turns on the radio. Neither her or May are really sure what Peter's deal is, but oh well. After 3 years or so, you just get used to it.
Tumblr media
Two rows of comedy gold, two!!!
And eventually...
Tumblr media
Aaaah the colors, the colors of the first panel!!!!!!!!
What follows is a great dramatic idea.
Tumblr media
This is diabolical. This is excellent. Love it.
And while Harry calls Spidey "Peter" as he gloats, Spidey knocks Harry out... and calls him "Osborn".
Just as Spidey figures out who Harry targeted, his webbing runs off. It's a great obstacle! He uses last issue's McGuffin to get more of it.
Tumblr media
When I was a kid, I never understood why Harry had picked May when MJ seemed just as likely a choice. Of course, Flash really wasn't, his love for Spidey is pure adulation. But Harry's doing everything to avenge his father--his blood relative. He gives much more credit to blood than to more subtle relationships, and that's part of why he immediately distrusts Spidey and Peter instead of trying to reconcile his idea of Peter with what actually happened. It's all the more striking because the gang has been shown to support Harry at least as much as Norman, notably when he came back from rehab in #105.
Tumblr media
A page that I remembered very well. What a great issue. What a great set of issues. I wonder what's in store next for Harry! I hope he comes back soon.
In the readers' letters, the team says that they slowed down time (obviously) and ask the readers if they'd prefer Peter to finish university.
In the next batch, we get to 1975! Now, as you may recall, I've read a big part of it (the first Clone Saga), but it will be interesting to see maybe one or two new issues for me.
See you later, alligators!
Also, I think Peter gets a new roommate, but shhh...
@immortaljailor jump scared me with this "9 People to Get to Know Better (Tag Game)" thing. How dare you perceive me. Will it stop me from doing it though? Of course not. So here, take my nonsensical rambles.
3 ships you like: I've never been big on shipping or romance in general, but I have, over the years, grown fond of a few relationships. I could absolutely go with popular ones that everybody knows, however to spice things up I'll go and add some very niche ones.
First up is Jenniver Aristeides and Snnanagfashtalli from Star Trek novel The Entropy Effect, by Vonda N. McIntyre. I'm positive neither were meant to sound as in love with the other when it was being written, but I was struck by the realisation that there's no fully platonic explanation for these two. Like, we are first introduced to them when they are beamed back in the middle of a bar fight that Fash started because a group of men were laughing at Jen's appearance (seven feet tall, all muscle, every part of her silver in colour, is equal in strength to Vulcans, but too shy to stand up for herself). She was fully prepared to kill them. And then there is a whole conversation where Jen is completely devastated she wasn't able to save someone due to being incapacitated and Fash comes in like the overgrown cat she is and rubs her cheek against and then cuddles Jen And then theres this quote.
"Snnanagfashtalli, she felt about as she had naver felt about another being in her life. Perhaps it was gratitude for friendship and consideration; perhaps it was love. But she never experienced love, as a giver or receiver, so she did not know."
They're always together when we see them, and when Jen wants to be transferred to botanical sciences instead of moving rank in combat and defense, Fash is only ever supportive. They play chess late nights in the rec room while smiling at eachother and laughing. They are the most relaxed in eachother's company. Like, please tell me how I could possibly be normal about them?
Tied in second is Siri Keeton and Sarasti, and Daniel Brüks and Valerie, both being human/vampire relationships from Peter Watt's Firefall series. "Oh, not another human vampi-" shush. Vampires are different in this one. It's set in the late 2090's where humanity has reached the point where it's borderline posthuman but also not and theres been first contact and it adheres to actual science instead of inventing things like warp drive and wormholes and hundred of species of humanoid aliens (sorry star trek). I cannot describe the worldbuilding any further than that because it's just so in depth but the point is humanity has brought back an extinct branch of humanity that's referred to as vampires because evolution left them only being able to eat human flesh. For science of course. They are described so terrifyingly viscerally It rewired by brain. What I really vibe with about these two ships is while the humans, Siri and Daniel, are fighting against the prey instinct to flee and hide so they can work with their vampire companions to slow the decent into ruin humanity is steadily marching towards, the vampires, Sarasti and Valerie, are trying to fight their instinct to rip them apart and eat them, knowing if they do they'll go extinct, and also try and navigate the fact that they have grown attached to their human crew (set in space for the most part) even though they don't experience affection while the humans are still terrified of them. I explained that poorly but please go read the books. The first one, Blindsight, has been published online for free here. Echopraxia, second book, unfortunately has not gotten the same treatment but your local library might have it, and if not you can always request it be ordered. They've been translated into other languages as well.
Third and last in line is Connor and Tina Chen from Detroit: Become Human. Tina has exactly no lines in the entire game and if we are lucky 5 minutes of screentime. There are, as of my last check, twelve fics on Ao3 of them, half of them being a single chapter in oneshot collections, and no art. A shame, but expected given it's obscurity. Anyways I just vibe with them, though really only the AU version I crafted in my fic planning daydreams.
First ship ever: I was about to say I couldn't tell you if the universe's existence was on the line, but looking back I'm pretty sure it was either SCP-049 and SCP-035 or Malicoda and Ererbus from the Gameknight999 series by Mark Cheverton that made me actual think, "huh, they seem... closer than just friends." Of course that ended up with me thinking "Oh! they're best friends!" because romance simply does not render in my poor little autistic aroace brain unless explicitly stated. Art I saw when looking up those characters of course helped.
Last song you heard: As I write this I'm hearing the lovely tune of more soup by Gerald Fried on loop. It's been four hours and counting.
Favorite childhood book: How dare you make me choose. uhhh.. uhhhhh,,,,,,,, hhhh,,,
Lets just go with The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien and The Days Are Just Packed: A Calvin and Hobbes Collection by Bill Watterson. I read so much during my childhood that I cannot possibly choose, but those two stand out as being some that I still come back too.
Currently reading: A lot of things but most recently Life in Ancient Egypt by Adolf Erman, published in 1886 and translated in 1894 by H. M. Tirad, with the copy I have having been republished in 1971 with minor notes to correct things that have since been proven false. Unless of course you want to count all the fanfiction. There's been a lot of that too.
Currently watching: Trying to get though all of Hermitcraft, starting from season 1 and working up to the current season while also attempting to not forget to document the time and dates each and every video was published.
Currently consuming: Lots of water :)
Currently craving: Ginger tea (I ran out of the kind I like)
Tagging: No thank you, but if you see this and feel like doing it then by all means go ahead. :)
[Apologies for misspellings, grammatical errors, and this rambley wall of text]
And our son would have super powers yes and he can run very fast and full heights he can jump very far he also when about 14 to 15 ft he would have Sonic powers like you saw at the Edison Mall when he is bigger it would increase in intensity that size he can manipulate electricity and electrical fields enough to cause damage to automobiles motorcycles and computers and at a distance about 30 ft actual bolts can come out of his hands well you never know because you don't want him to be large for some reason you're afraid to be invaded and we see that your retards kick the crap out of you. But it would be infrared and it's extremely dangerous to you as Bill knows it can actually see her things when they're larger and at 15 ft from 30 ft away he could ignite anything that's flammable with ease paper as well brush and dry wood and of course he could detonate devices usually a little further away 50 ft and if he's juiced up and with a little bit of a charge from electricity not even the uranium he could do it at about 175 ft but if you're close to him he could fire beams at you that would go through your skin and he could cook your heart or your brain in a couple seconds I understand the fear you don't want to be near him and so forth but you don't know we can do these things and what my son and daughter are saying is that when it's reverse and you have Mom with half or part of bulge and they share the jeans just like Frankie the Pena who is Ken who's sharing the jeans a little bit it's like doping but it's not and he can make it permanent maybe because it's JC and he could have monsters out there but you don't know if you don't know where d is if he's doing it or not. A lot of people are trying to find her and they're looking in Utah they're looking in Florida they're trying to get the story and they're trying to find the cop who came up and grabbed her and they don't know who it was no they do it's Tommy f so he could be doing it
Thor Freya
You're going to be huge pretty quick we need the answers and we need them now
Mac
I suppose we understand what's going on but we don't we need to figure out who's doing this he comes huge like that and hurts people you might go to court he says not usually Joe doesn't really and it's true too it doesn't really use them unless he has to
Daniel but there's going to be a lot of close calls in searing hot looks. But we don't think you will but still today's incident was horrible that guy's an ass and he's actually in Miami and he's Federal pen lock up and they preparing to move him to Guantanamo Bay Cuba and it's about time really these people are criminals and they don't need to be here and our friend said something curious it looks like something to try and force Mac to have them fight and the other Max want to so I get that and it might set them up to do it too it looks very odd on the outside you can't tell who the hell is who it doesn't make any sense until you see what's going on now and it is who's going out there it's Dave AKA Dan and he knows about Tommy f so Tommy F shows up as a Marine to try and infiltrate to try and get him out or other and they do code red him and he is incapacitated so now there's two fish out there and a war begins and they find probably cloning under the island and that's one thing but really once they find that they've had enough and they start sending up to Titan now the problem with sending the molak is their ships might get commandeered so you have to watch it very closely and the molar won't like it but they always get beat up
It's true too they don't want to do that because they might take the ships and tons of people say it too the clones don't want them doing that there's a huge number of people who want them both to go on and this incident is going to make it happen and that guy messed with the wrong people cuz he's in jail and he's saying things that are wrong and the FEDS picked up on it and they started going down there and they had enough. They picked up speed and they could hear what's happening they're going to let that little piece of s*** out again and mac and we were there and we were driving and we were driving fast on purpose at first and much faster later and we're going to blame bja because he's the director of the CIA and that's how it goes
Mike tew
We're having a good time here and we're spoiled but that's the way it is
That was my brother above and we're not having a good time I'm stuck here in the mental hospital because this idiot and we got to get rid of his clothes and these people want to make a deal that deal sounds ideal. I don't see what's wrong with it so we're going to go ahead and try and take a look at it and see what it is and send their LED zeppelins up there okay our friend has a good point and you have to watch out for it but we will and they get eaten and there's a reason for them getting eaten and all this other stuff so it's kind of gross but we're going to keep an eye on it
Justin
They really don't want a ton of them coming back and there's no reason for it unless they've taken over it's kind of going to be a trick but really this is an idea
Tommy f
These people are disgusting and our son is nothing like this and knows it and we do too and doesn't want to be but he's trying to get some things done right now and we got to help him do that
