Look, I respect RDJ as an actor. I think he's got some serious chops and is good at what he does. but he does not have what it takes to play Victor von fucking Doom.

Dr. Doom is the ultimate comic book villain. He's a conniving schemer who fucks around and finds out on a daily basis. He's a grandiose and epic Wagnerian antagonist. He's a Saturday morning cartoon character. He's literally prophesied to be the only person who can bring lasting peace to the world as its conquering king.

You can't just give a role like that to someone like RDJ who, while a good actor, is not suited to that role. The only person who can pull of Doom is either a classically trained Shakespeare performer or a community theater amateur.

WIBTA for asking my dad to financially contribute while I’m in college, even though I have a big college fund?

Hi, I already posted this on the actual AITAH reddit, and got kind of mixed results. Some saying yes I am, a few saying no I’m not but I still shouldn’t ask, etc. So I want to ask here too to see if Tumblr has a different opinion.Buckle in, and sorry in advance, but this is gonna be a long post. TL;DR at the end.

I (18nb) am heading into college next year (took a gap year between high school and college), and live full-time with my mom (59f). My parents divorced when I was about 9 years old. My dad (48m) remarried when I was about 11, and has four other kids, my step-brother and my 3 half brothers, aged 17m, 7m, 6m, and 5m.

I won’t go into super into the details, but as a whole that side of my family was not very functional, to say the least. I ended up moving entirely out of my dad’s house and in with my mom at 14. He wasn’t very happy about this, and fought it a lot (including call me at 6 in the morning to threaten taking me and my mom to court), but it was the best decision for me. He was incredibly upset with my mom, saying she ‘enabled’ me, but if I hadn’t moved in with her, I was offered to stay at a local youth shelter that partnered with my school. Which I would’ve done. We’ve since reconciled in the last year or so, but it was a very tough time.

Since that point, he’s paid for practically zero of my expenses. He did pay child support until I turned 18 ($230 per month). My mom kept this low even though she could’ve asked for more when he got raises (he makes 6 figures, low end) because she knew it would just cause more drama, and he still had to provide for his other four kids and my step-mom, who was a SAHM. I did remain on his insurance, and he would take the occasional pediatrician co-pay, but every single time he got any co-pay for a medical bill, he would message both of us in a group chat saying ‘just got this, pay me back/your half’.

This was especially not great for my mom, as in the last few years I have unfortunately become disabled. I got mononucleosis during my freshman year, but due to doctors being so backed up with COVID, they diagnosed it incorrectly as an ear infection. I was walking around, exercising and pushing myself and taking only flonase for it, for about 5 months before someone finally caught onto it. And as some people will know, untreated mono is incredibly dangerous to the immune system. Luckily, I did not develop an autoimmune disorder, but I do now have a myriad of health issues. Think similar to long COVID. I missed almost my entire junior year, and half of my senior year, because I was too sick to even go to school most days. I ended up having to take a modified version of the GED in order to graduate.

As you can probably guess, I also spent more time in doctor’s offices and hospitals than I didn’t during those years. I became a regular patient (2-3 times a month) at my local children’s hospital, I was sent to specialist after specialist, and had a minimum of 2 ER visits a year. Not just for side effects & issues, but also because of how utterly weak my immune system was left. I caught strep throat once, and had to go to the ER to be put on a high dose of steroids because my throat closed up. And because of the generally highly unstudied nature of autonomic and autoimmune issues, a lot of those visits were just ‘treat the symptoms, throw things at the problem to see what sticks’. I also had a not-great doctor at the children’s hospital that actively made my condition worse, via putting me on way too intense meds and incorrect treatments, but that’s an entire other post. There was also a few years there where getting me to eat anything was impossible. I was constantly nauseous and threw-up more than I kept down, to the point where I (at 5’11) dropped below a 100 pounds. So my mom had to buy me expensive, and far away, food because it was the only thing I could eat.

Suffice to say- I was expensive. The insurance covered some, but there were still co-pays, and a lot of things she just paid straight of pocket for as well. The food and accommodations she bought just as is. Her child was sick, what was she meant to do? She won’t ever tell me really, but I know this deeply impacted her finances. Thousands and thousands of dollars, minimum.

And my dad complained when he was sent the $15 co-pay for my occasional pediatrician visit. I’m still a bit angry at him for that, even if we’ve since reconciled and I try not to be. I’m actually unsure of how much he was aware of, since him and I & my mom weren’t on speaking terms for a while there. Due to that fact, and that it was ultimately my choice to move out and go extremely low contact, my mom and I didn’t mention it or hold it over his head.

Until the past few months, where we reach the crux of the issue.

As the title says, I have a very good college fund, to the point that if I continue to live at home with my mom, save very carefully and utilize the large scholarship I’ve been given, I can complete undergrad at a private art school without taking out loans. This is because both my parents saved for years, as well as my grandparents and my great aunt contributing. I’m fully aware I’m in a highly privileged position with this fund, especially in today’s economy. My brothers don’t have anywhere near this amount (the younger ones don’t even have college funds started, I believe) and likely won’t ever have this chance that I do. Also worth mentioning my step-brother currently goes to a private high school, which I never did (and there was quite the toxic situation around that when that was being decided). My dad had my great aunt, who was initially still contributing to a fund, stop contributing and switch to putting money aside for that brother, without asking me or even letting me know until after it was done. If he’d asked I would’ve said it was okay, but he just didn’t.

In every discussion about going to college, my dad has used this college fund as a way to kind of dismiss my worries about money. If it weren’t for the scholarship I’ve received (23k per year), and if I lived on campus or wanted to take extra courses outside of my chosen major or goodness forbid, took another year to complete college, I’d need to take out loans. But each time I say that, he handwaves me and sighs with a ‘You won’t need to take out loans, [my name]. You worry too much about money.’ Which I really don’t think I do, since a college fund doesn’t cover medical expenses. I’m finally in a better place with my condition, but I’m still actively disabled, and go to the ER and doctors regularly still. A college fund won’t cover food expenses, with me living at home. Or transportation costs, and it certainly won’t cover me having a social life if I wanted one. So my options there would be to continue working while in school (I have two part time jobs currently), or continue to put the entire financial burden on my mom. I don’t even know if he’s still putting in the $50 a month that my mom is, or if he stopped that when he stopped child support (which he very excitedly told me ‘remind me to stop paying child support’ a few weeks before my birthday).

I want, or wanted, to ask him if he’d be willing to contribute while I’m in college. So I don’t have to work, at least my first year (which he’s said he doesn’t want me to do), but I can still have some semblance of a normal college life without making my mom continue to cover me. She’s said she will, happily, but I’d quite like her to be able to retire someday, y’know? Not a huge amount, but maybe just what he used to pay in child support, except to me this time. It wouldn’t cover medical or even food costs, but it’d help.

I’m having a conversation with him tomorrow about college things, and I’m just having so many second-thoughts. Teenagers are statistically very selfish and entitled, and I know I don’t quite get how the world works yet. Is it entitled of me to even ask him to contribute that amount, when I have such a good fund as is? And my brothers don’t? My mom pointed out he’s the one who chose to have more kids knowing he wouldn’t be able to provide for them the same way, but that feels a bit mean since I do really love my brothers. And most people work during college or take out loans, even when they are disabled. A lot don’t get even half the support I already have. My mom says no, and that he still chose to have me as well, but I feel like she’s biased and just really protective of me.

Developer Interviews And Miyamoto Quotes Are Not The End All Be All Of Mario Lore

So something that I come across way to often is people taking developer interviewers or Miyamoto quotes as gospel, and that anything that contradictions them including the games themself is just wrong. This also something I only see happen with Mario lore, because as soon Miyamoto says something wrong about the Zelda Lore, people get on him for it. Now I am not saying Miyamoto and Developer interviews can't be used for gaining lore about the games. I have done so myself with Waluigi, Captain Toad, and Donkey Kong to name a few. What I am saying it's not always reliable, could have been retconned like with the Star Child Yoshi (I'll explain in a future post), or just straight up wrong.

So for Miyamoto, Miyamoto has had a history people have noticed where often times whenever he's asked questions about lore he either changes the subject, says something blatantly false, or turns it into a Scott Cawthon level joke. So I'll give a few examples here alongside, and I hope to add more to this list in the future, and I'll eventually make a link to my Zelda Lore Blog when I create that list.

The first thing is Bowser's Junior's mother which is in the joke camp, which originates from the video Miyamoto Answers Popular Fan Questions. You have one that is a mix of both humorous and serious in the suggestion Dr. Mario is not a legitimate Doctor. This can be seen in Mario's Creators Answer Burning Questions About The Series, Don't Compare Him To Disney: Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto on The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Miyamoto Answers Popular Fan Questions. A suggestion that in universe is incorrect, I expand upon this in a future post which I will link. When it came to Miyamoto saying Mario's last name is Mario, he also claimed Link's last name was Link clearly making a joke out of it. This can be seen in the video 51 Rapid-Fire Questions About The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. More pending. Meanwhile when it comes to other examples we have. Takashi Tezuka claiming Yoshi is a Koopa/Turtle. But in the manuals, descriptions, and in game dialogue Yoshi are only ever established to be Dinosaurs/Dragons. Never once are they implied to be Koopas/ Turtles. Koichi Hayashida once claimed Toads weren't Mushrooms. Another claim that contradicts the manuals, descriptions, and in universe dialogue alongside other details. Something I plan to make a future post about. So you might be wondering, how should can we discern what is useful or not useful at all. Well...

If it's not done in the form of a joke, given that's one of the most obvious.

If there was nothing in game to go off of, and in addition to being repeated elsewhere that further cements it's validity. Like with Donkey Kong for example.

If it is meant to clarify something like with Captain Toad.

If it's something that would have obviously been retconned.

If it is backed up by the games and manuals like with Waluigi or the Bowser Kingdom.

If it doesn't contradict the games and manuals like with Yoshi.

If it's not a quote mine.(This happens a lot)

Priority for lore should be in-game dialogue and descriptions, then the Japanese manuals, then the manuals, then website information, then developer interviews, and then stuff Miyamoto says.

In addition to that last one, if only one source claims it and everything else contradicts that one source then the single source is wrong. Case in point, DK64's line.

There was a rumour in the media a few days ago that Aston Martin approached Adrian Newey with a huge financial offer in Jeddah and are just waiting for the answer, however Mike Krack said to media in Suzuka that is not the case and they are happy with their team so they didn’t even need to make any offers in the first place. There was a slight change in the rules concerning tyres for this year and that caused the lack of running in FP2. There was a rule that if Friday sessions are declared as wet, the teams have a selection of 5 intermediate tyre sets and 2 wet ones. In a good opener, Manly have continued to work on turning Tigers discards into genuine first graders. 

It has been a long time since Manly won a Rd 1 fixture, and defeating Souths (who are a very good side), albeit at altitude in Vegas on a smaller than regulation field, is a good first step in season 2024. 

This was a sea sawing affair, with 3 lead changes, and until mid second half, it was unclear who would get the chocolates. Manly overcame an 8 point deficit early in the second half to mark this as a particularly strong performance. 

Manly Haumole Olakau'atu scored a typical powerhouse try, Chery Baby class was everywhere, and the super reliable Reuben Garrick did what he always does, ie gets the job done. 

The intercept try by the Saab Turbo was memorable, and the third brother Turbo (who is turning into a bit of try scorer)  scored a nice try near the end to help Manly’s prospects. 

Tigers discard Luke Brooks had a strong game. Too early to call whether he is the answer, and one should never get too excited about any ex Tiger’s player in round 1, but so far he looks to be a good buy, and is certainly strengthening the Manly playmaking ranks. 

Manly’s run for the next 5 rounds are particularly difficult, Roosters (home), Eels (away), St George (away), Panthers (home) and Warriors (away). They will be doing well on current form, to be 3/6 after this run. 

If they can be 3 or 4 wins after 6 rounds, that should set them up well for a decent 2024 season. Time will tell.

“It really put life into perspective and made me appreciate what I have here. It was a bit of happiness and a bit of FOMO [fear of missing out]. I was in Samoa watching them play and the Wi-Fi wasn’t great. 

Sea Eagle Comment: All this article achieved is to link an incorrect stereotype between pacific islander players and “coconuts” (personal opinion). Was the news outlet concerned serious when it allowed the story go to print?. 

VIVA LAS VEGAS 

 With an off season that was less than exciting, in terms of off field indiscretions, the only thing left for fans was the prospect of 80 or so NRL players heading to Vegas to expand the religion that is rugby league to the USA. 

Many said “What could go wrong?”. As it turned out the jury is open on that until said players return home safely to Australia, and there is no later confirmation of court based legal action being taken post Vegas, against some NRL player who overstepped the mark in the land of the long lost litigation lawyer. 

This is a wait and see for now. 

The Betoota Advocate cruelly suggested that Manly were part of this trip because it fell on the same weekend as the Gay Mardi Gras, and they wanted to escape the rainbow Guernsey debacle of season 2022.

 Apparently Coach Seibold when playing for the London Broncos did a gay magazine photo shoot at the instigation of then Virgin supremo Richard Branson. As this article says, “Seibold, Shane Millard, Tulsen Tollett and Jon Clarke, who is currently Manly’s head of performance, were among the players to get their kit off. Asked if he had a copy of the centrefold spread to share with Sin Bin, Seibold said: “I get enough shit as it is, I don’t want to give any more ammo to anyone.””. 

The Sea Eagle certainly can’t argue with any of that. However, with that said, given the debacle that was the Gay Pride jersey incident of 2022, which saw Manly Legend and Coach Des Hasler dumped (unceremoniously) the mind boggles at what sort of due diligence was undertaken on these two members of the Manly coaching staff (ie Siebold and Clarke). 

Manly has to got to get away from these LGBTQ promotional backdrops and concentrate on rugby league. It’s quite clear this is the sort of thing that can turn half the camp (no pun intended) towards giving up playing rugby league for religious reasons.  

Anything that has the capacity to cause an NRL player to refuse to play rugby league cannot be good. 

As to whether the Vegas experiment will be a long term piece of strategy genius remains to be seen. The Sea Eagle reminds the NRL, that history is littered with failed Australian enterprises who thought going to America and taking them on was a good idea. 

It may be a tough ask going to the USA to try and dominate a 350m plus population base (apparently increasing at the rate of 0.5m people a week in illegal arrivals over the Southern borders). Regrettably, Rugby League is a game that is regularly confused with Rugby Union in the USA . Despite its relative simplicity as compared to the farce that is international Rugby Union, it would be fair to say Rugby League is generally not well recognised, let alone understood, in the USA. 

No doubt those in control at League Central have a master plan to cover all of this. After all, everyone would readily accept that Rugby League has a long and distinguished history of doing things thoroughly, in a well considered and well executed way. 

Manly Prospects Season 24 

Many have asked the Sea Eagle over recent weeks, how will Manly go in 2024? 

First, let’s face some cold inconvenient facts. Manly have not made the 8 in the last 2 years. For reasons only they can explain, they also believe that buying players from the West Tigers will improve this and turn them into a premiership powerhouse.

The jury is out on this one. As John Cadogan of Auto Expert has often quipped, its time to apply “the BFS- Bullshi*4t  Fact Separator” to this one, and as Investment guru Ben Graham once quoted,  lets put this whole ex Tiger’s player purchase program “under the microscope of common sense”. 

Whilst some ex Tigers players clearly go better when they leave the Den (let’s face it they couldn’t go any worse), the Sea Eagle privately fears like all things Tigers, that the wheels will eventually fall off when the blow torch of pressure football is applied. 

Time will tell, but the Manly faithful will be watching (like Greta Thunberg at a RAM and Chevy truck convention in Tampa Bay Florida). If the implosion does occur, Manly management can expect to hear some fairly well constructed criticism from all sides on another fine mess the Club will have found themselves in.  

The market for used up Ex Tigers players is is much like that of used EV’s. The best outcome you can expect is to pay someone to take it/them off your hands.
