Mark me as yours
This takes place immediately after and is interlinked with 'Missionary with the lights off' but from Astarion's rather than Tav's POV - check it out if you haven't already, the fics complement each other.
Soft sassy Astarion, F!Tav, Gale, minor appearances by other origin characters, Astarion POV
Fluff, humour, banter, pining, non-explicit sexual references
A day in camp in the life of Astarion. Features brooding, sewing, doing laundry, being dramatic, engaging in improper use of archmage of Waterdeep, reading erotica, and more!
Approx. 2,000 words
You frowned at the stuffed bear you held in your hands, weighing up your desire to showcase your skills against the absurdity of the task at hand.
The whole thing was coming apart and needed to be washed and restuffed if you were to do this properly. What was inside, anyway? Fur..? You supposed you could go hunt something furry. Or maybe save yourself the time and just give Scratch a quick partial shave, he wouldn’t mind – the mutt lying at your feet was stupid enough to like you. To prefer you over anyone else, in fact.
You reached down to give him a fond, absentminded pet.
And then there was the matter of not letting it burn to a crisp the moment Karlach touched it.
“Is there a flame ward enchantment on this..? Can you reapply it?” you asked Gale, who was nearby at his usual spot by the fire, concocting something edible for the rest of your group.
“There is and I sure can,” he replied.
Great. You had gotten yourself into a group project with the wizard to rescue a teddy bear.
“Don’t tell me this is what Wyll was so concerned about earlier...” Tav had finally made it out of your tent and sat down next to you, looking somewhat less disheveled than how you’d left her.
“The bag of holding finally tore. Naturally I was the only one competent enough to fix it.”
You gestured with your thumb towards a towering pile of assorted crap that Wyll and Lae’zel were still sifting through: Lae’zel inspecting and setting aside any weapons and armour she deemed worth keeping, and Wyll sorting through an array of scrolls and potions no one was ever going to use, or would forget were in your possession if the need for them ever did arise.
“Darling, this is your fault, you know,” you added. “Must you pick up everything?”
“Karlach made me do it. Also I don’t know what you’re talking about, I am prudence and sensibility personified,” she said.
“You’re uh... You’re also bleeding,” Gale said, pointing at her neck.
A trail of blood had started running down from the puncture wounds, which must have reopened.
Shit.
Before you could reason yourself out of it, your instincts kicked in and you pressed your mouth against her neck, licking the blood off. By the gods, she actually leaned into you as you did that, not away. You glimpsed a guilty, sheepish smile she threw at Gale, as you pulled away.
“Idiot... Here, apply pressure, I’ll get the amulet,” you said.
“I’m the idiot?! You’re the one who ran off to resolve a sewing emergency, like a good little seamstress, before sorting me out!”
You strode over to your tent, in part to grab the amulet of Silvanus, in part to discreetly tuck away the erection that had immediately started developing as soon as you tasted her blood.
Hells, am I 239 or 15? you thought, annoyed with yourself.
“An amulet? I was wondering why you’d stopped visiting me in the mornings...” you heard from Shadowheart.
“We have a system,” Tav replied.
“Clearly,” laughed Shadowheart.
A scene from the night sprung up in your mind as you went about your day:
She’d fallen asleep on your shoulder, half lying on you, her nose buried in your neck.
It was... nice. Really nice. And you didn’t think this bizarre scenario would ever happen again.
And yet, pleasant as it was, she still felt too far. You needed to feel her closer. Perhaps you were being greedy, but after all these years, why should you get anything less than exactly what you wanted?
Carefully, very carefully lest she stir awake and leave, you rolled over onto your side, holding her against you.
She was still asleep. Good...
You cautiously slipped lower and lower until your head was at her chest, delicately wrapping your arms around her torso.
Then she stirred.
Shit.
Without waking, she sighed, drawing you into a tight embrace, clutching you against her chest, complete with throwing a leg over your hips to pull you even closer.
You finally relaxed, your arms wrapped around her waist.
Perfect...
She felt so warm... She smelled of comfort.
You could indulge in this for the night. You would wake up before she did anyway.
You drifted away, lulled by the beating of her heart.
You didn’t have any nightmares that night.
“Is your boyfriend coming?” you heard Karlach somewhere in the distance.
You cringed at the juvenile term. Still, you were curious how she would answer.
“He’s on laundry duty,” she responded. “Just us gals today.”
“So your idea of doing washing is to pawn everything off to me,” said Gale.
“Vampires and running water, remember,” you said. “Also you don’t look like you’re exerting an awfully large amount of effort yourself... Although I must admit, this is ingenious.” A little flattery wouldn’t hurt.
Gale sat at a riverbank at a deeper section of the river. Some sheets and clothing were being tossed and spun in a small bubbling whirlpool within the water, together with foaming slivers of soap.
“Surely few archmages possess such finesse and creativity?” you continued.
Gale sighed and motioned for you to throw your bundle in as well, expanding the whirlpool.
“Just toss your shirt in too, it's splattered with blood,” Gale added wearily.
Her scent lingered on it. The last thing you wanted was to wash it off.
You pulled the shirt over your head and hurled it into the whirlpool.
“Not Tav’s creative nailwork, I presume..?” Gale asked with a wince, looking at your back.
“Nope” was all you said, as you pulled a book out from your pocket, making yourself comfortable on the bank. To his credit, the wizard did not probe further.
‘Mark me as yours’
Those words had been echoing in your mind over and over all day.
It couldn’t have meant anything.
A little expression of some vampire fetishism finally poking through – you shouldn’t have expected any different from her, she did offer you her blood consistently, not even asking for anything in return.
Still, you’d felt like something inside you might burst from your desire and thrill when you heard those words.
And then everything that followed after...
You had actually lost yourself for a short while. Not dissociated and detached. Lost yourself. In bliss. In the scent of her skin, in the sounds of her need for you, in the sensation of her blood merging with yours and flowing through your veins.
And now she was walking around somewhere, with telltale bitemarks on her neck for all the world to see. Scandalous...
No, it couldn’t have meant anything.
‘Mark me as yours’
Still... What a pleasant little fantasy...
‘Yours’
“You’ve been smiling at that page for ten minutes straight now,” Gale’s voice snapped you out of your musings.
“It’s my favourite page,” you retorted.
“What’s it about?” he asked snidely after a short pause.
“I have no idea,” you confessed, begrudgingly, snapping the book shut. If the wizard knew what was best for him, he would abstain from any further comments.
“She’s quite fond of you,” Gale said sombrely after another pause.
“Is this about to turn into one of those ‘You break her heart – I'll break your face’ talks?” you scoffed, rolling your eyes.
“Oh gods no,” Gale laughed. "No, I would go straight to incineration... You just strike me as the type that needs to have the obvious spelled out for them.”
“I am not entering this type of discourse with someone who’s presently washing my spend off my bed sheets,” you said, laying back and shutting your eyes, to bask in the sun. No answer followed.
Not even a minute had passed when a shadow fell over you.
Odd, you thought. There hadn’t been a single cloud in the sky.
You opened your eyes to see a giant water bubble hovering a few meters above you. Was that... a bedsheet floating in the middle..?
Worth it, you thought just as the undulating bubble spilt and crashed over you.
You coughed and spat, trying to untangle yourself from the sheet, as the unleashed torrent nearly swept you off the bank. And yet, above all else, you found yourself curious.
The water had no longer been running as part of the river, true, but given its sheer volume and the velocity at which it hit you, it should have hurt more than merely your pride.
You made it to the edge of the bank, and cautiously dipped a finger in.
Nothing...
You proceeded to submerge your hand, then your entire forearm, to your elbow.
Nothing.
Of all things... Why this? Why not your reflection? Why not the blood craving? Oh well. Beggars, choosers...
You were laughing.
“This tadpole,” you turned and shouted at Gale, unabashedly stripping yourself of your pants, as Gale turned away, muttering something about going blind, “is the best thing that’s happened to me in centuries!”
The best? Maybe second best? It had some tight competition, but you supposed nothing would have been possible without it, so it reigned supreme.
You leaped into the river, diving and letting the gentle current carry you downstream for a while.
You knew what you would be doing later that evening with her.
“What have you got there?”
She slid onto your lap like a cat that refused to take ‘no’ for an answer as it sought attention. You had been idling away your time by your tent, with some pulp you had picked up earlier. The rest of the group had been drinking and roasting something at the campfire.
“Trash. Disappointingly boring trash, this time,” you answered.
“No pulsating flesh tunnels in this one?”
“Alas... There were not one but two mentions of ‘velvet-wrapped steel’ however, and plenty of ‘sword-sheathing’.”
“To the hilt?”
“Is there any other way?”
“Wouldn’t want to sheathe it only partially, I suppose...” she mused. “Come join us. We found some half-decent wine. And you don’t have to be alone all the time, you know.”
“Spare me, I’ve had enough of Gale’s lectures and Wyll’s tales for the day. And besides, ugh, all those chewing noises!” You made a gagging sound.
None of them want me there.
“Oh don’t be such a delicate princess,” she rolled her eyes. “How’s this: it’s our joint meal time. It would be rude and completely unfair to exclude anyone. You should sit down with everyone, bite down on my wrist and make a great deal of slurping.”
“You can’t be serious.”
Delightful. Simply delightful.
“It will be funny!”
“I fear you might be the only one laughing, darling.”
That is hilarious, I can just imagine Gale squealing or getting sick.
“Is there anyone else you’d care to make laugh?” she asked with a slight upturn of her lips.
Not in the least.
“I could die again knowing I have accomplished something if I ever make Lae’zel laugh. But perish the thought – I am perfectly happy right here with my literature.”
“Well, if you don’t want to join the group, perhaps I will stay and you can...” She snatched the book from your hands and tossed it aside, leaning in and bringing her lips up to your ear. “...Release your kraken in my field of rose petals,” she purred in a sultry voice.
“Stop,” you choked back a snicker.
“Get tangled up in my beef curtains?” she continued with the same tone.
“You’re disgusting.”
“Sink your meat shaft in my cream tart!” she persevered.
“By the gods, woman, I am never having sex with your again.”
“Suckle the nectar from my weeping core!”
“Alright, fine, I’ll go, anything is better than this.” You got up, pushing her off your lap.
“Taste my forbidden, oozing fruit, Astarion!” she cried out from the ground behind you as you covered your ears and shouted “LALALALA”, making your way towards the campfire.
You would endure the prattle of your companions.
Then you would take her for a moonlit swim in the river.
Then you would see if she might spend the whole night in your arms again.
Perhaps she could sleep in your shirt and leave her scent on it again – it was foolish to sleep completely in the nude out in the wild after all, what if there were intruders?
Everything was going according to plan, you reminded yourself.

Fan Fiction is still Fiction.
It has been brought to my attention via some comments I've received on AO3 that some people need a quick review of what the word 'fiction' means. Dictionary.com tells us:
fiction is a noun that can be defined in the following manner: 1. literature in the form of prose that describes imaginary events and people. 2. something that is invented or untrue. "they were supposed to be keeping up the fiction that they were happily married" - a belief or statement that is false but is often held to be true because it is expedient to do so. "the notion of the country being a democracy is a polite fiction"
Let's sit on this for a minute...
Okay. Now let's put this into terms of 'fan-fiction.' A form of writing that is expanding on, transforming, or otherwise basing its plot/premise on something that was more than likely already considered somewhat fantastical, or otherworldly. *Fiction*
So, (in my opinion) when you come into the comments with complaints about the believability of something mundane- like say, the time a real-life-inspired school would let out, or the lack of toll on a real-life-inspired bridge- It will often make you sound either incredibly silly or incredibly petty. Because the story isn't real. The place isn't real. Even if it heavily reflects a city/state/country that exists outside of its universe, it's still fiction.
This is exceptionally amusing to me because the characters I write are *superheroes* with enhancements and mind-blowing technology. When someone comments that I portrayed an aspect of New York City inaccurately, my first thought is always: That's where you draw the line? The radio-active spider, flying suits, and intuitive natural language AIs are okay, but we're getting hung up on what groups of people do and do not typically own cell phones?
I guess what this boils down to is another message about weighing your comments carefully. Ask yourself: Did the author ask for constructive criticism? Will the author find this comment helpful? Will this comment change anything about the story? Will this comment be read as positive or encouraging? If the answer to any of these questions is 'no' or 'I'm not sure,' your best course of action is to not leave that particular comment.
Be kind to your fanfiction authors! They put a lot of hours, effort, and love into the stories they present to you FOR FREE!!

An outsider POV that may never happen, but still fun to think about: A Gotham chiropterologist, fascinated by how bats congregate and almost seem to thrive in Gotham and the ecosystem around the city manages to tag and track a bat nearly almost to the Batcave.
Bruce nearly has a heart attack over this when he notices and doesn't have to search very far because the researcher shows up at his door.
Cue Bruce having to make several calls and duck this annoyingly persistent researcher who insists that there's a cave system under Wayne Manor that needs to be studied. The GU campus draws further attention to this via the university's social media accounts sharing posts and memes about this story.

break the skin (to break the barriers)
break the skin (to break the barriers) by sobsicles (@sobsicles) Rating: Mature Word count: 29k
The first time she meets him, he's nothing more than an almost-missed appointment. ~~~ Dean is silent for a long, tense moment, then he gruffly says, "It's not for banishing the angels. It's to summon them. So, it doesn't—it's not to get rid of 'em, but to draw 'em in." Mitzi can't help but glance up at him at that. His voice is so heavy with so much unexplained pain, and she doesn't understand why, or what angels have to do with it. She knows religion can impact people. She's very aware that it can get complicated, and that it can be a huge source of pain for someone, but Dean sounds grievously wronged, somehow, as if it's a truly personal thing. She pushes through, focusing back on her job, clearing her throat before murmuring, "Well, I guess we all want angels to visit us sometimes." "Just the one," Dean mumbles. "Your guardian angel?" Mitzi asks. Dean breathes out, "Something like that. As close to one as an angel will ever get."
After Chuck is defeated, Dean walks into a tattoo shop and hands the owner a list of tattoos he's thinking of getting. The first on the list is a sigil that will draw angels to him. Or rather, just one angel.
Told from the POV of Mitzi, the owner of the shop, this story follows Dean's appointments as he uses the time he spends getting his body inked to tell Mitzi the story of his life. And he starts right from the beginning. Obviously, Mitzi thinks she's making it all up, but Dean's stories are entertaining, so she listens. And Dean talks. He talks about his family, his friends, life as a hunter. He talks about Cas. These appointments are like therapy sessions for him, but also for us as readers, because we get to relive the story of the Winchesters and remember some of our favorite moments.
Mitzi is a delightful OC, sassy yet kind and empathetic. The writer has done a beautiful job fleshing out her character so she's not just there for Dean to talk at, and her interactions with her sister and their friend will surely get you as invested in their personal lives as much as Dean's.
Thankfully, though this story follows the SPN canon faithfully, it completely ignores the final episode and writes its own ending. Dean gets the happy ending he so much deserves, and his new friend Mitzi is there to celebrate with him.

Shoto is the embodiment of innocence simply because intimacy hasn’t crossed his mind.
Due to his childhood, he’s unused to affection of any kind and is more curious about his feelings on it when it does happen.
He, kind of scientifically, is interested in the way romantic feelings work, and might say stuff like:
“Can you do that again?”
“Oh.” - as an interest in what you did.
“Why did you do that?”
Has zero clue about anything.
While hugging, if you go to pull away too soon, he’ll tighten his grip and say, “Just a little bit longer. Please?”
And yeah. You’re gonna say no to that. Sure.

- swagger went to the twilight forest instead. he fought the naga and (struggled a bit with) the twilight lich, but brought both trophies home
- ross let swagger in on his 9/11 re-enactment bit, which went just as well as you might have expected. it also led to swagger losing some of his gear

- he put up posters for his safe return, offering a reward for any information about her whereabouts or the perpetrator(s) themselves. justin nothinbutlag got some missing posters and is going to help place them around

Glaring at him, Matthew's voice raised a few pitches.
"Don't feign ignorance with me!"
"She killed herself because of you! Mom killed herself because of you!"
"Ever since young you've done nothing but instill your ideals to me, countless times you've beaten me and mom, yet, I never fought back. Why? Because mom was with me, my young self was somehow able to get through your harsh beatings and scoldings...but...but, you killed her! Because of you, I was forced to betray the ones that I held dear to my heart just so that I could kill you in the most pathetic and humiliating way!"
..."forced," you say? 🤨
I mean, rip on the sad backstory, man. I would definitely sympathize with you way more if the situation was just Slightly different.
Credit where credit is due, tho:
He was abused from a young age, and I don't have first-hand or second-hand experience with this (thank goodness), but I Am aware of how damaging it can be to someone's self-esteem, to their perception of the world and like. So many other things. I can't properly discuss how much of an impact this has on someone. So obviously, the consequences of such an experience are still felt now for young Matthew.
His first and strongest support, his mother, was taken from him. By his abuser. Definitely was a tipping point for the descent into madness.
This is a world where demons pray on those who are in their darkest moments, those who are vulnerable. And after the loss of his mother, of COURSE Matthew would feel like he has no choice.
OG!Ren did everything he could, but he couldn't shield Matthew from his father. He could only do so much. I guess in this case... Matthew's hate for his father was stronger than his love for Ren.
So yeah, it's valid.
BUT THAT DOESN'T CHANGE THE FACT THAT HIS ACTIONS ANNOY ME. WHY, OH WHY. DID YOU TARGET REN??
I can understand where someone is coming from and also strongly dislike them >:(

One thing I love about Dungeon Meshi - that I have neither read nor watched yet and only get subjected to through my dash - is how much the fandom seems to love Every single one of those fuckers.
Unlike the usual, I don't see Only one or two over-popular guys, there's so much love for everyone in this story from the fandom.
Honestly I think it's a good sign.

do you have any fic recs? thank you!
HELLO ANON I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO ANSWERING THIS ASK SINCE I GOT IT (im going to assume you mean byler fics since that is my most recent specialty🫶):
a cruel summer with you by the amazing @campbyler is by FAR one of my all time favorite fics. never in my entire four year fic reading career have i read something that obviously has so much love (and lore) put into it. if you haven’t read it already (or interacted with their blog, which i highly suggest!) this would be one of my first picks! (anything by suni or thea or andi is guaranteed to strike you speechless, though, so definitely check them out as authors, too!)
take a little moment (find the right words) by my lovely friend @astrobei is definitely also in my top all time bc i am SUCH a sucker for college aus it’s not even FUNNY. anything by suni is a banger, honestly, but this one specifically nails the miscommunication/idiots in love trope AND has rotund ducks. what is not to love.
a body in motion (also by @astrobei) is one of the best and most visceral mike character studies i have ever read. i’ve read it twice and the playlist has a permanent place in my spotify library. i don’t think i need to say any more.
sleeping with the lights on by singingseok is another mike character study that tore my heart from my chest and made me watch as it picked it apart and sewed it back together. okay. it’s SO good i highly recommend it for sure!
literally anything by @parkitaco is going to be fantastic, but three of my personal faves are the gaps and the silence, the windows of this love, and you were bigger than the whole sky because apparently i love sobbing into my pillow in the middle of the night. it’s healthy sometimes.
the strawberries are dying by my favorite doopel @lighthouseas is PERFECT if you’re looking for a unique take on byler with a historical spin <3 im a SUCKER for historical aus as well so this great depression fic was so incredibly perfect hehe
landslide by chamb3rs is. it’s so good i don’t even have words. it captures the spirit of senior year of high school so well, especially now that i’m in it lol. anyway, i’ve read this one twice and will continue to read it again for the rest of forever <3
and lastly, if you’re looking for spiderman aus (which i LOVE), look before you leap by lumism, the higher i climb, the farther i fall by @andiwriteordie, and mike wheeler’s guide to falling in love with a superhero by @smoosnoom are all wonderful perfect places to start 💗
i hope this gives you a good place to start anon :3 and also that im not overwhelming you. lol. but feel free to check out my bookmark page here for a more complete list of fics i’ve read!

More to come— But for now, enjoy this juicy excerpt from JON’S POV! 💕
“Every non-human I’ve ever met only causes pain and death,” I said. “They want us to bleed by their very nature. But… you haven’t tried anything. You haven’t tried to kill us, seduce us into selling our souls, or trap us in an eternal nightmare. I don’t understand you.”
The fairy’s eyes widened, and she scoffed at me. “Well, forgive me for confusing you by not being a murderer. How can someone like you be remotely afraid of me?”
“Looks can be deceiving.”
“And sometimes, they’re exactly what they are,” she fired back.
I didn’t wrestle off the tired, wry smile that came to my lips. “For someone the size of a mouse, you’ve got a lot of spirit.”
Her green eyes flickered, raking me up and down. Her posture softened like she was slowly seeing less of a snarling animal in me. “If you weren’t a hunter,” she said. “I might actually accept that as a compliment.”
“That’s a shame, then.”
“It is.” She sniffed, looking away pointedly.
The tug in my chest resurfaced—I couldn’t let her sleep thinking I might smother her before she awoke. She had to know we were going to release her. Somehow, it mattered to me that I wouldn’t stay a complete monstrosity in her eyes.
“I lied to you,” she announced, halting my train of thought.
I drew in a sharp breath and leaned away from her slightly. She didn’t appear to be priming herself to attack, but I stayed wary all the same. “What is it?” I asked.
“I…” She wet her lips and wrestled with herself. “I was there the night before you caught me. There were two humans. They didn’t see me, but I heard them. They… mentioned that hunters might be after them—”
“What?” I blurted, crowding toward her.
She cringed away, casting a wild look around the room for an escape.
“Hey.” I lowered my voice. “I’m not gonna hurt you. Look at me.”
Hesitantly, she did.
“You can tell me,” I assured. “It’s alright. What did they look like? What’d they say? Any names?”
“I couldn’t see their faces, and I don’t think I heard any names, but… I’m starting to think one of them was your monster. I’ve never been near one before, but something felt horribly wrong.”
“What does that mean?”
“There’s this… ability I have. A sort of instinct.” Each word fell from her lips hesitantly as though any one of them might set me off. “I can sense non-humans and other beings that you would consider unnatural. It’s meant to help my kind steer clear of those things. Maybe I could point you in the right direction if you take me back to that old house. But if I do that, you’ll have to let me go. Does that sound like a fair deal?”
Desperate hope painted her face. It was a little heartbreaking. I considered telling her I planned to release her regardless of what she offered, but it was a tempting ability to make use of.
“Why didn’t you say something about this earlier?” I asked.
Fresh, uncertain tears welled in her eyes. “I thought you’d kill me if I told you everything. You wouldn’t have a use for me anymore. And then, I thought if I admitted I lied…”
“You thought we’d kill you for that,” I finished. “So why admit it now?”
She shrugged, mumbling, “You didn’t lock me in the microwave. That counts for something, I suppose.”
After pondering her offer, I nodded. “Okay. We have a deal. You help us at the house, and you’re free to go.”
“Free to go immediately after,” she said, pointing a finger at me. “Swear that you won’t enslave me.”
I scoffed. “That didn’t even cross my mind.”
“Not even for a second?” She frowned suspiciously. “When was the last time you negotiated with a non-human? Stars, when’s the last time you spared a non-human?” When I couldn’t come up with an answer, she made a small noise of contempt.
“Fine,” I said. “I promise there’s no strings attached after you help us. But we’re not going anywhere until Cliff comes back with the car, so we may as well get some rest.”
