So the Transformers RPG's Beginner Box: Roll Out set is coming with the scenario of the core rulebook and the first scenario of the A Time Is Now campaign book, and character guides for Hound, Gauge, Anode, Aileron, Smokescreen, Novastar, Beachcomber, and Springer, some of whom were stand-ins for player characters in A Time Is Now including in the art for the book. This is releasing in May.
Gauge, Aileron, and Anode have actual character guides for suggestions of how to play them!!! Arcee, who is the quartermaster of the Ark and an npc in A Time Is Now, also had a pregen released a while ago as free bonus material as a warrior sentinel (which means she's specialized in melee weapons/martial arts generally and deflecting attacks and such and can have an extra shield or parrying weapon, can manifest energon weapons without spending energon, has more free actions, etc) with a gladiator influence.
So um if there is anybody out there looking to play some of the (trans) lesbian gals of transformers and their mentee (admittedly in Anode's case assuming she was just Arcee's friend like in IDW1 she's more like Gauge's aunt but we're pretty sure everyone following us is aware that we very much adore the Greenlight/Aileron/Anode/Arcee/Lug/Lancer ship that we're more or less responsible for being one of the first to toss around on the internet) or would like that to be their introduction to the game this is a thing you will be able to do in a few months.
Just. Just really blown away. We're just overjoyed, especially with everything happening right now that makes life for gender and orientation expansive folk so hard, that Renegade committed to showing some more of these bots. Very curious what Anode's art will look like since she hasn't had any of her IDW art shown in the book yet, Aileron got some new art in the TTRPG as did Gauge.
*coughs* obviously if you play Aileron *cough* there is an obvious npc in A Time Is Now to romance in the game if that's something people at the table including the GM who'd be playing her is cool with that *wheezes in lesbian*-
assuming its not already an established relationship and this is just more of a family adventure of some alien robot lesbians (okay look we have to note that the same gender loving transformer gals probably wouldn't call themselves lesbians they might have their own words for that and gender stuff but this is not the post to talk about the orientation and aesthetic systems we've come up with for transforming alien robots) and their friends and their daughter. I um wow this a thing. wow even though things can be crud this really actually happened. We actually had the honor of playing Gauge in a delightful and harrowing A Time Is Now game with some friends and the mother-daughter moments with Arcee were really fun

Amazing guide for anyone designing characters with a crutch or cane or stick! I haven't used one in a long while (wheelchair dude now đ) but this is fab !!!!
A general cane guide for writers and artists (from a cane user, writer, and artist!)
Disclaimer: Though I have been using a cane for 6 years, I am not a doctor, nor am I by any means an expert. This guide is true to my experience, but there are as many ways to use a cane as there are cane users!
This guide will not include: White canes for blindness, crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs as I have no personal experience with these.
This is meant to be a general guide to get you started and avoid some common mishaps/misconceptions in your writing, but you absolutely should continue to do your own research outside of this guide!
This is NOT a medical resource!!! And never tell a real person you think they're using a cane wrong!

The biggest recurring problem I've seen is using the cane on the wrong side. The cane goes on the opposite side of the pain! If your character has even-sided pain or needs it for balance/weakness, then use the cane in the non-dominant hand to keep the dominant hand free. Some cane users also switch sides to give their arm a rest!
A cane takes about 20% of your weight off the opposite leg. It should fit within your natural gait and become something of an extension of your body. If you need more weight off than 20%, then crutches, a walker, or a wheelchair is needed.
Putting more pressure on the cane, using it on the wrong side, or having it at the wrong height can make it less effective, and can cause long term damage to your body from improper pressure and posture. (Hugh Laurie genuinely hurt his body from years of using a cane wrong on House!)
(some people elect to use a cane wrong for their personal situation despite this, everyone is different!)

When going up and down stairs, there is an ideal standard: You want to use the handrail and the cane at the same time, or prioritize the handrail if it's only on one side. When going up stairs you lead with your good leg and follow with the cane and hurt leg together. When going down stairs you lead with the cane and the bad leg and follow with the good leg!
Realistically though, many people don't move out of the way for cane users to access the railing, many stairs don't have railings, and many are wet, rusty, or generally not ideal to grip.
In these cases, if you have a friend nearby, holding on to them is a good idea. Or, take it one step at a time carefully if you're alone.
Now we come to a very common mistake I see... Using fashion canes for medical use!

(These are 4 broad shapes, but there is INCREDIBLE variation in cane handles. Research heavily what will be best for your character's specific needs!)
The handle is the contact point for all the weight you're putting on your cane, and that pressure is being put onto your hand, wrist, and shoulder. So the shape is very important for long term use!
Knob handles (and very decorative handles) are not used for medical use for this reason. It adds extra stress to the body and can damage your hand to put constant pressure onto these painful shapes.
The weight of a cane is also incredibly important, as a heavier cane will cause wear on your body much faster. When you're using it all day, it gets heavy fast! If your character struggles with weakness, then they won't want a heavy cane if they can help it!
This is also part of why sword canes aren't usually very viable for medical use (along with them usually being knob handles) is that swords are extra weight!
However, a small knife or perhaps a retractable blade hidden within the base might be viable even for weak characters.

Bases have a lot of variability as well, and the modern standard is generally adjustable bases. Adjustable canes are very handy if your character regularly changes shoe height, for instance (gotta keep the height at your hip!)
Canes help on most terrain with their standard base and structure. But for some terrain, you might want a different base, or to forego the cane entirely! This article covers it pretty well.
Many cane users decorate their canes! Stickers are incredibly common, and painting canes is relatively common as well! You'll also see people replacing the standard wrist strap with a personalized one, or even adding a small charm to the ring the strap connects to. (nothing too large, or it gets annoying as the cane is swinging around everywhere)

If your character uses a cane full time, then they might also have multiple canes that look different aesthetically to match their outfits!
When it comes to practical things outside of the cane, you reasonably only have one hand available while it's being used. Many people will hook their cane onto their arm or let it dangle on the strap (if they have one) while using their cane arm, but it's often significantly less convenient than 2 hands. But, if you need 2 hands, then it's either setting the cane down or letting it hang!
For this reason, optimizing one handed use is ideal! Keeping bags/items on the side of your free hand helps keep your items accessible.

When sitting, the cane either leans against a wall or table, goes under the chair, or hooks onto the back of the chair. (It often falls when hanging off of a chair, in my experience)
When getting up, the user will either use their cane to help them balance/support as they stand, or get up and then grab their cane. This depends on what it's being used for (balance vs pain when walking, for instance!)

Many people create lists of synonyms for the word 'said,' but what about the word 'look'? Here are some synonyms that I enjoy using in my writing, along with their meanings for your reference. While all these words relate to 'look,' they each carry distinct meanings and nuances, so I thought it would be helpful to provide meanings for each one.
Gaze - To look steadily and intently, especially in admiration or thought.
Glance - A brief or hurried look.
Peek - A quick and typically secretive look.
Peer - To look with difficulty or concentration.
Scan - To look over quickly but thoroughly.
Observe - To watch carefully and attentively.
Inspect - To look at closely in order to assess condition or quality.
Stare - To look fixedly or vacantly at someone or something.
Glimpse - To see or perceive briefly or partially.
Eye - To look or stare at intently.
Peruse - To read or examine something with great care.
Scrutinize - To examine or inspect closely and thoroughly.
Behold - To see or observe a thing or person, especially a remarkable one.
Witness - To see something happen, typically a significant event.
Spot - To see, notice, or recognize someone or something.
Contemplate - To look thoughtfully for a long time at.
Sight - To suddenly or unexpectedly see something or someone.
Ogle - To stare at in a lecherous manner.
Leer - To look or gaze in an unpleasant, malicious way.
Gawk - To stare openly and stupidly.
Gape - To stare with one's mouth open wide, in amazement.
Squint - To look with eyes partially closed.
Regard - To consider or think of in a specified way.
Admire - To regard with pleasure, wonder, and approval.
Skim - To look through quickly to gain superficial knowledge.
Reconnoiter - To make a military observation of a region.
Flick - To look or move the eyes quickly.
Rake - To look through something rapidly and unsystematically.
Glare - To look angrily or fiercely.
Peep - To look quickly and secretly through an opening.
Focus - To concentrate one's visual effort on.
Discover - To find or realize something not clear before.
Spot-check - To examine something briefly or at random.
Devour - To look over with eager enthusiasm.
Examine - To inspect in detail to determine condition.
Feast one's eyes - To look at something with great enjoyment.
Catch sight of - To suddenly or unexpectedly see.
Clap eyes on - To suddenly see someone or something.
Set eyes on - To look at, especially for the first time.
Take a dekko - Colloquial for taking a look.
Leer at - To look or gaze in a suggestive manner.
Rubberneck - To stare at something in a foolish way.
Make out - To manage to see or read with difficulty.
Lay eyes on - To see or look at.
Pore over - To look at or read something intently.
Ogle at - To look at in a lecherous or predatory way.
Pry - To look or inquire into something in a determined manner.
Dart - To look quickly or furtively.

HOW TO WRITE A CHARACTER WHO IS IN PAIN
first thing you might want to consider: is the pain mental or physical?
if itâs physical, what type of pain is it causing? â sharp pain, white-hot pain, acute pain, dull ache, throbbing pain, chronic pain, neuropathic pain (typically caused by nerve damage), etc
if itâs mental, what is the reason your character is in pain? â grief, heartbreak, betrayal, anger, hopelessness, fear and anxiety, etc
because your character will react differently to different types of pain
PHYSICAL PAIN
sharp and white-hot pain may cause a character to grit their teeth, scream, moan, twist their body. their skin may appear pale, eyes red-rimmed and sunken with layers of sweat covering their forehead. they may have tears in their eyes (and the tears may feel hot), but they donât necessarily have to always be crying.
acute pain may be similar to sharp and white-hot pain; acute pain is sudden and urgent and often comes without a warning, so your character may experience a hitched breathing where they suddenly stop what theyâre doing and clench their hand at the spot where it hurts with widened eyes and open mouth (like theyâre gasping for air).
dull ache and throbbing pain can result in your character wanting to lay down and close their eyes. if itâs a headache, they may ask for the lights to be turned off and they may be less responsive, in the sense that theyâd rather not engage in any activity or conversation and theyâd rather be left alone. they may make a soft whimper from their throat from time to time, depends on their personality (if they donât mind others seeing their discomfort, they may whimper. but if your character doesnât like anyone seeing them in a not-so-strong state, chances are they wonât make any sound, they might even pretend like theyâre fine by continuing with their normal routine, and they may or may not end up throwing up or fainting).
if your character experience chronic pain, their pain will not go away (unlike any other illnesses or injuries where the pain stops after the person is healed) so they can feel all these types of sharp pain shooting through their body. there can also be soreness and stiffness around some specific spots, and it will affect their life. so your character will be lucky if they have caretakers in their life. but are they stubborn? do they accept help from others or do they like to pretend like theyâre fine in front of everybody until their body canât take it anymore and so they can no longer pretend?
neuropathic pain or nerve pain will have your character feeling these senses of burning, shooting and stabbing sensation, and the pain can come very suddenly and without any warning â think of it as an electric shock that causes through your characterâs body all of a sudden. your character may yelp or gasp in shock, how they react may vary depends on the severity of the pain and how long it lasts.
EMOTIONAL PAIN
grief can make your character shut themself off from their friends and the world in general. or they can also lash out at anyone who tries to comfort them. (five states of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and eventual acceptance.)
heartbreak â your character might want to lock themself in a room, anywhere where they are unseen. or they may want to pretend that everythingâs fine, that theyâre not hurt. until they break down.
betrayal can leave a character with confusion, the feelings of âwhat went wrong?â, so itâs understandable if your character blames themself at first, that maybe itâs their fault because theyâve somehow done something wrong somewhere that caused the other character to betray them. what comes after confusion may be anger. your character can be angry at the person who betrayed them and at themself, after they think theyâve done something wrong that resulted in them being betrayed, they may also be angry at themself next for âfallingâ for the lies and for âbeing fooledâ. so yes, betrayal can leave your character with the hatred thatâs directed towards the character who betrayed them and themself. whether or not your character can âmove on and forgiveâ is up to you.
there are several ways a character can react to anger; they can simply lash out, break things, scream and yell, or they can also go complete silent. no shouting, no thrashing the place. they can sit alone in silence and they may cry. anger does make people cry. it mostly wonât be anything like âugly sobbingâ but your characterâs eyes can be bloodshot, red-rimmed and there will be tears, only that there wonât be any sobbing in most cases.
hopelessness can be a very valid reason for it, if you want your character to do something reckless or stupid. most people will do anything if theyâre desperate enough. so if you want your character to run into a burning building, jump in front of a bullet, or confess their love to their archenemy in front of all their friends, hopelessness is always a valid reason. thereâs no âout of characterâ if they are hopeless and are desperate enough.
fear and anxiety. your character may be trembling, their hands may be shaky. they may lose their appetite. they may be sweaty and/or bouncing their feet. they may have a panic attack if itâs severe enough.
and I think thatâs it for now! feel free to add anything I may have forgotten to mention here!

Developing Backstory: Bringing Characters to Life

1. Where It All Started: The Characterâs Origin
Place of Birth: Where did your character first see the world? Think about the impact of this placeâwas it a busy city where they had to fight for attention or a quiet village where everyone knew everyoneâs business? This location doesnât just say where theyâre from; it shapes how they see the world.
Family and Upbringing: What was their family like? Were their parents loving or distant? Maybe they were raised by someone other than their parentsâa mentor, an older sibling, or even alone. Family (or the lack of it) is usually one of the most significant factors in shaping who someone becomes.
Societyâs Expectations: What was expected of them when they were young? Possibly, they were born into wealth, with all the pressure to continue the family legacy, or maybe they were raised to be invisible in a world where survival mattered. How does this influence who they are now? Do they accept or reject those expectations?
2. Childhood Events That Left a Mark
First Taste of Conflict: Think about the first time the character realized the world wasnât a perfect place. Maybe they witnessed violence or faced betrayal. What was that moment, and how did it stick with them? This moment usually lays the foundation for the characterâs emotional landscapeâfear, hope, ambition, or distrust all come from these early life lessons.
Childhood Dreams: When they were young, what did they want to be? Every child has dreamsâdid they want to be a knight, a scholar, or even just someone who could travel the world? Did they have to give up these dreams? How does that lost dream shape them now?
Formative Relationships: Who was their first best friend, mentor, or enemy? Childhood friendships and relationships often create deep bonds or wounds that last into adulthood. Did they have a mentor who taught them everything, only to betray them? Did they lose a childhood friend that still haunts them?
3. The Teen Years: Where They Start to Become Who They Are
Trials and Tribulations: Whatâs the biggest challenge they faced as they grew up? Was it losing a loved one, failing at something important, or maybe being forced into a role they didnât want? These teenage years are where the emotional armor starts formingâhow did the difficulties they faced shape them into the person they are now?
Education or Training: How did they learn what they know? Were they formally trained by an institution, learning everything by the book, or did they learn through experience, like a street-smart survivalist? What impact does their education or lack of it have on how they interact with others?
Teenage Bonds: Did they have a first love or a first major falling out with someone close to them? These experiences often create emotional scars or connections that they carry with them into adulthood. How does that past friendship or romance influence their behavior now?
4. Key Life Events: The Big Moments That Define Them
Trauma or Loss: Was there a moment that changed everything? Think about a significant lossâmaybe a loved one, their home, or a sense of identity. How does this event affect their worldview? Do they build walls around themselves or dive into relationships with reckless abandon because they fear losing more?
Victory or Failure: Did they experience a moment of triumph or devastating defeat? Success and failure leave their marks. Were they celebrated as a hero once, leading them to overconfidence, or did they fail when everyone was counting on them, leading to crippling self-doubt?
Betrayal: Was there a betrayal that shaped their adult relationships? Whether it is a friend, family member, or lover, betrayal often changes how we trust others. Do they close themselves off, constantly expecting betrayal, or try to rebuild trust, afraid of being left alone again.
5. Where They Stand Now: The Present Moment
What Drives Them Today: Whatâs the one thing pushing them forward now? Is it revenge, the need to restore their familyâs honor, or maybe even just survival? Whatever it is, this motivation should tie directly back to their experiences.
Emotional Baggage: What unresolved emotional wounds are they carrying? Everyone has scars from their pastâsome are visible, others not so much. How do these emotional wounds affect how they treat others, how they react to conflict, and how they move through the world.
Current Relationships: Whoâs still in their life from their past, and how do they feel about it? Did they reconnect with someone they thought theyâd lost, or are they haunted by unresolved issues with people from their past? Do they have any ongoing tensions or regrets tied to these people?
6. Tying Themes to Their Backstory
Cultural or Mythological Influence: How does their personal story tie into the larger worldâs mythology or culture? Do they carry a family legacy, a curse, or a prophecy that hangs over them? How does this influence their interactions with others and their perception of themselves?
Recurring Symbols: Are there objects, dreams, or people that keep showing up in their life, symbolizing their journey? Perhaps a recurring nightmare haunts them, or they carry an object from their past thatâs both a source of comfort and pain
7. Character Arc: The Journey from Past to Present
How Does Their Past Shape Their Growth?: Every character has emotional baggage that needs resolving. How does their backstory drive their arc? Do they need to forgive themselves, let go of the past, or accept who theyâve become to move forward?
Unanswered Questions from the Past: Are there any mysteries in their backstory they need to solve? Maybe theyâre unaware of their true parentage, or maybe thereâs a forgotten event from their childhood that will resurface and change everything.

You can write (and should write) whatever you need to.
If someone is telling you what you can and cannot write, that someone ain't me.
This is a TemplateâNot a Test. You cannot fail it, any more than you can fail a stepladder, a garden rake, or an offset spatula. It's a tool that you can use (if you choose to) to get a particular job done. If you want to do a different job, that's fine with me.
I decided to create this template because, as of 2019, I'd watched about 50 years worth of television, movies, and theatrical plays, and read about 45 years worth of stories in the English language, and could count on the fingers of one hand the number of characters that matched all four points on this list.
For example, if the character was "One of the Good Onesâ˘" who didn't want revenge or death, then they played the role of the Cat in the Tree, who was only in the story so that the non-disabled protagonist could get that thing for them, to prove they're Worthy. Or the disabled character wasn't shown to want anything at all, and was only in the story for the other characters to Worry About. (And this wasn't only from nondisabled writers, either. Disabled writers could be just as susceptible to these habitsâespecially if they're writing a disability different from their own).
... I decided to compose this list mostly so I could articulate what frustrated me most about the disabled characters in the stories I saw, and to help make sure I wasn't making the same old stuff (because it's easiest to recreate what you're already familiar with).
(BTW, Here's the definition of "Template" from Dictionary.com)
What disabled readers want* from non-disabled sci-fi and fantasy** writers:
Imagine your world where we exist, without being a tragedy, a burden, or (functionally) erased.
Back in 2019, I came up with my own metric for Disability Representation in stories, inspired by the Bechdel-Wallace Test.
I named it the "1,001 Problems Template"
There's a disabled character,
Who wants something,
Beyond Revenge, Cure, or Death,
And personally takes action to achieve it.
I decided to call it a "Template," rather than "test," because I hope that it's a useful tool, and not something to Pass or Fail. 1,001 Problems, because, Yeah. Disability can be a bitch, but characters can have 1,000 other things they're dealing with, too. And you can write a story about any one of them.
The point being: If you can imagine us as part of your make-believe future, and fairy tale past, then it's easier to include us in your real world present.
*With the understanding, of course, that not all readers want the same thing [/standard "Your mileage may vary" disclaimer]

Woe fan seasonal spirits be upon ye â¨
YEAH THATS RIGHT for one of my uni projects I decided to design some seasonal spirits plus a guide for my own hypothetical Sky season! The original concept was having a skykid guide the player helps uncover some of the ruins and truths left buried by the ancestor spirits, though I kinda had to just focus on the designs themselves due to time woooo
Each of these spirits were probably alive when the dark stone pollution/general issues in the kingdom came to ahead. The idea that Fearful Florist was trying to preserve some of the flowers destroyed by the pollution, Caring Fisherman used to fish for light creatures for dark stone processing but later came back and freed them and finally Starry Manta Rider used to raise Mantas but slowly watched as they were either taken or became spirits.. mmmm we love fun lore â¨
(The seasonal location would probably be in a desert area outside the Vault of Knowledge, similar to Isle, Wasteland and the Little Prince area! I imagine itâs accessed through a crack in the vaults walls. Maybe the player follows a little starry manta to get there?)
I did have ideas for seasonal quests like uncovering the spirits pasts or saving the guide from a krill during one of their investigations of some ruins but did not have to do draw it sadly ;-;
