synopsis: emile and arsenal have a london derby at home

betrayal. such a harsh word, right? well, it only happens twice in a season. every london derby that happens at the emirates as well as stamford bridge.

today is a london derby day. arsenal and chelsea go head to head at the emirates, and you're not sure whether to pull out your chelsea jersey or one of emile's jerseys. it has been your biggest struggle ever since you started dating arsenal's wunderkid.

you'd grown up a blue. your entire family all stand behind chelsea, so you were taught to do the same. up until a jamaican prince enters your life. a jamaican prince who plays for one of chelsea's biggest rivals.

arsenal in london was something equivalent to the royal family in england; the gunners were deemed royalty. so many legends have come into arsenal as boys and left as kings. thierry henry, dennis bergkamp, patrick vieira, robin van persie, you name them. and currently at arsenal, there are a couple of kings in the making. if you could throw out a couple of those princes, it'd be bukayo saka, eddie nketiah, and emile smith rowe.

even his name sounded royal. boy from croydon who grew up watching arsenal while his father was standing behind another one of their rivals, spurs. emile's life is tough, having his father on spurs' side and you on the blues' side. but you loved how loyal he was to arsenal. his dream was to be a one-club man, and the boy is already on the road to becoming an arsenal legend. you cannot help but be proud of him.

so you sat at the vip box all alone. you had decided to wear both the red and blue kits, arsenal over top of chelsea. you cannot bear to betray your childhood club, not even for a day. it was chelsea over everything, but it wasn't chelsea over emile for you. it was more like emile over arsenal and chelsea.

and so you sat there, burning from the cause of wearing two kits over one another as the referees make their entrance onto the pitch, followed by the arsenal and chelsea boys. seeing emile start a game is like seeing a comet; it rarely happens. you were just grateful that he managed to stay fit enough for mikel to see him in the starting xi against your club today.

you can't deny the fact that emile has the potential to be so much better than the chelsea midfielders. you also can't deny the fact that emile is a starboy and he is bound to be an arsenal legend. and as much as you want to see emile at chelsea, you can't because he doesn't have that connection to the blues the way you do, and you have to respect that. although you know how much chelsea would succeed if emile makes that north london move somehow. you also respected emile for respecting your connection to the blues. after all, once emile steps foot into your shared apartment, he becomes just emile, the man you love; and not emile, arsenal's number ten.

the game kicks off, and now is truly the time where you don't know whose name to scream out for. you have no clue whether to recite the arsenal chants or the chelsea chants. nobody in that stadium knows that you're wearing the chelsea shirt closer to your heart, not even ems. you decide to stay quiet, only chanting emile's name once he has possession of the ball. that had always been your choice when it came to london derbies between arsenal and chelsea. you'd decided to not be too excited whenever chelsea would score a goal, but when you get home, that'd be your time to celebrate and you're glad emile respects that.

emile finally gets possession of the ball, before making a smooth run towards chelsea's goal, kepa keeping his eye on emile's every move. you knew how quick and swift ems was. mikel once said he was one of the most agile guys he's ever coached.

as mentioned, you had a love-hate relationship with london derbies. this particular situation is one of the reasons. emile dashes into the penalty box before delivering a swift kick of the ball, sending it to the back of the net, kepa not being able to defend his post. the crowd roars at one of their own, emile doing his celebratory knee slide towards the arsenal crowd.

you were amongst the first fans to stand up and celebrate as well. you found your seat shortly after realising that your club had already conceded one. huffing out a breath, you realise how much london derbies take a toll on you. if your parents were sitting here with you right now, they'd be disappointed. nevertheless, you were excited to showcase your excitement to emile when you get home.

the game ends, emile being the only person on the scoresheet. you were allowed to come down to the pitch to congratulate the guys. as emile had expected, you had run to the chelsea boys first, congratulating each and every one. shortly after, emile feels a pair of arms snake around his waist as he's having a conversation with gabi.

"must've hurt, huh?" gabi teases as you appear from behind emile.

"go to hell, martinelli." you scoff, finding yourself being pulled closer to ems as a couple giggles vibrate through his body.

"nah bro, quit it. that's supposed to be my job." emile joins in, blushing at the same time.

"i hate you guys." you bury your face into emile's ribs.

"you love us," emile wraps his free right hand around your shoulders as you bury your face. "more than chelsea this derby, especially."

"don't push it, smith rowe."

"c'mon babe, red and blue make purple. that's my favorite color, let's call it even."

you hesitate for a few seconds. "fine. only because you're cute."

Crisis On Infinite Earths #5

Warning, Spoilers Ahead…

 Psycho-Pirate’s master is very upset – he’s destroyed the two prime universes, murdered the Monitor, and he still isn’t able to level up!

The Monitor - via pre-recorded message – reveals the he used his death energies to create a netherverse that absorbed the Earth-1 and Earth-2 universes.  However, the two universes are merging and will cause the other’s destruction.

Alex Luthor (son of Earth-3 Lex Luthor and Lois Lane) reveals the Monitor left him with instructions to save the two universes.  The rapidly aging Alex is now a teenager.

The Flash and Red Tornado are prisoners of the mysterious master.  Psycho-Pirate abuses poor Barry out of sheer boredom.

Lana Lang for WGBS-TV reports on the current insanity of the newly-created planet. In one city, you have dinosaurs, Neanderthals, Viking ships, blimps, horse-drawn carriages, and buildings from the 30th century.  

Sinestro himself has a “What the hell?” look on his face – and he’s seen some stuff!

Alex Luthor and Harbinger have gathered an assembly of heroes and villains.  Big two page spread of the assembly.  We have the Legion of Super-Heroes, the Outsiders, Infinity Inc., the Metal Men, Cave Carson & his team, the Teen Titans, the Sea Devils, the survivors of Easy Company, Dr. Light II, Swamp Thing, All-Star Squadron, Ragman, Riddler, Captain Boomerang, Kamandi, Rag Doll, Star Sapphire, the Persuader, Elongated Man, Steel, Hawkman, Hawkwoman, Captain Comet, B’Wana Beast, Bir Sir, Solomon Grundy, the Mist, Aqualad, Tula, Lori Lemaris, the Blackhawks, Phantom Stranger, the Cheetah, Robotman, Per Degaton, Dr. Polaris, the Creeper, Cinnamon,  Monsieur Mallah, Phobia, the Legion of Substitute Heroes, Batgirl, Batman, Earth-2 Robin, Earth-2 Superman, Earth-2 Huntress, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (John Stewart), Martian Manhunter, Celsius, Arion, Scalphunter, Green Arrow, Killer Frost, Firestorm, Deathstroke, and Plastic Man.

The main thing I love about George Perez’s artwork – the man is not afraid to draw a large group of characters.   The groups are never standing in straight formation either.  The characters are reacting and interacting.  A few examples:

1)      Easy Company is clearly freaked out by Swamp Thing.

2)      Beast Boy (Changeling) re-uniting with the missing Cyborg.

3)      Aqualad and Tula assisting Lori Lemaris.  Lori can’t stand because she’s a mermaid.

4)      Solomon Grundy is very annoyed.

5)      Couples are standing next to each other: Nightwing/Starfire, Brainiac 5/Supergirl, Lightning Lad/Saturn Girl, Bouncing Boy/Duo Damsel, etc.

6)      Elongated Man, Plastic Man, and the Metal Men are using their stretching abilities to great effect.

Lois Lane – also from WGBS-TV – interviews people on the street:  Tomahawk and Grixx of Ceti Alpha 6.   Poor Tomahawk doesn’t even know he what a television is – only moments ago he was fighting with George Washington’s troops.

Back to the assembled heroes.  Adding to the roll call:  Sargon the Sorcerer, Firehawk (the Western character), Black Orchid, Gizmo, Deadman, Gypsy, Penguin, Brother Blood, Validus, Jemm (Son of Saturn), Amethyst, the Warlord (Travis Morgan), Catwoman, the Atom (Ray Palmer), Jonah Hex, Vibe, Captain Cold, Earth-2 Wonder Woman, Ocean Master, Dolphin, and Black Canary.

We take a quick peek at Rann where Adam Strange battles monsters from the pre-historic era.

Superman steps up with the big hero speech: “Maybe I’m wrong talking for everyone but I will. Send us back. Let the doubters decide. But I promise you this, if we can save the worlds that remain, we will!”

The series has consistently shown Superman as the standard bearer of the DC Universe – the one you turn to when the end of the world is here. It has also demonstrated the struggles Clark has with the role: he has fears and vulnerabilities but has to ignore it and order to be the “shining light” for the other heroes.

A team of Green Lanterns, including Arisia and Katma Tui, arrive on Oa.  They discover the Guardians in stasis but are quickly taken out themselves.  

Lois Lane is attacked by a sabretooth tiger but is quickly saved by Earth-1 and Earth-2 Superman.  

Rip Hunters and his Time Masters are adrift in time.

Alfred and Jason Todd call for aid as Anthro, Embra, and a host of Neanderthals are invading Wayne Manor! Batman responds and he brings back-up. The back-up consists of Earth-2 Robin, Earth-2 Huntress (logical as they know the secret identity and are part of the family, Katana & Halo of the Outsiders (Batman’s team, also in on the identity), Nuklon (he’s trustworthy), Per Degaton, Kung, the Brain and Monsieur Mallah, Poison Ivy, Plastique, and Weather Wizard.  What?! Bruce is obviously not concerned about maintaining his secret identity at this point.

We have a brief panel of Batman putting his arm around Jason Todd’s shoulders. Jason is in civilian attire, not in his costumed identity. Earth-2 Robin (an adult Dick Grayson) is clearly looking at the duo with an unhappy “Who are you” expression. Again, George Perez – master of small details.

Unfortunately, my adorkable Anthro has no dialogue. The world is missing out on what would have been an awesome Alfred-Anthro interaction.

Starfire, Sun Boy, Firebrand, Firestorm, Polar Boy, and Killer Frost head to the Soviet Union to assist Red Star.  Killer Frost has reverted back to her lovable “I will kill you all” self.

Red Star refuses the aid until Starfire reminds him: “It’s our world. Please, we have to work together if we’re to save any of us.”

Red Star concedes: “Your words should be heeded by all. I apologize. You are right. Perhaps if we all survive, the politicians will remember this cooperation and build a better world for us all.”

Good luck with that!

Psycho-Pirate is still picking on my poor sweet Barry.  Meanwhile, the master is transforming the Red Tornado from machine into a primal force.

The Legion, The Justice Society, Zatana, and Sargon are attempting to combat the out of control weather only to discover that it’s being caused by the Red Tornado. Wildcat’s spine is shattered by a lightning bolt – he will never walk again.  We also get a quick two panel glimpse of Yolanda Montez.  Yolanda will become the second Wildcat.

The heroes and villains unite to save the universe.  Alex Luthor informs the group there are five universes that need to be saved.  

The master reveals himself to Psycho-Pirate and Flash:  Call me…the Monitor!”   A very corpse-like Monitor.

We end on Earth-X: “An earth where World War Two had continued for more than forty years.” AKA the home of the Freedom Fighters (Uncle Sam, Phantom Lady, The Ray, the Human Bomb, and Black Condor).

Earth One and Earth Two are DC’s golden and silver age characters. The remaining three earths feature characters from various comic book publishers DC bought out over the years: Charlton, Fawcett, Quality, etc.

Sprinting one by one down to the sickbay, their footfalls thundering in the vast space of the Batcave, Shazam and Abuse held tightly to their friends until they were laid gently on hospital white bed sheets, tucking them in and stepping back to surrender them into the care of the Bat-family.

“Do you think they’ll be ok?” Collin whispered to Billy later, reaching across the wide table they were seated at while they watched and waited, threading his fingers through his.

Billy squeezed. “They will be now.”

I love these guys and love them working together. I think there needs to be more work with them all together because although they're not even really in the same universe and Colin technically doesn't exist anymore, I still think there should be more.

(This is for oooi and Whoami? who asked for more. oooi for waiting a year for a new one and Whoami? for pestering me into writing one in two days instead of studying for SACs and I couldn't thank you more for it x)

Abuse and Shazam carried their precious cargo through the streets and alleys of Gotham city. Abuse with a young boy in yellow and green and black decorating his skin, head pillowed on his arm with a trickle of blood soaking down his skin from his raven hair, breathing shallow and eyes fluttering behind their lids. Shazam held another boy, taller than the other, in reads and blues, green shards dotting across his body from the pieces the larger men couldn’t get, his heart beat slow and his skin too cold to be normal.

They were both tired, footfalls landing heavily on the uneven ground and echoing in the silent night of the city. Abuse’s bones ached and groaned beneath his skin, the dull throbbing of agony shotting from the base of his spine to radiate into the rest of his body was only tell-tale of what was to come once he turned back. His skin was splattered in red, blood both his and Robins, bruises littered the expanse like comets on the beach and his breathing was ragged from the glass shards in his side. Shazam looked down at the large gash on his forearm as Superboy stirred and groaned in his arms. His pain was similar to his friends, and he knew that once they turned back they would both pass out from the pain, as they had last time and every other time before. His suit was ripped and torn and coated in sticky splashes of oil and blood. His ribs ached when he breathed, the pain darting along the fractures like lightning in the sky.

“Billy,” Collin said, looking through his hair at Shazam. “Do you think we should stop? We’re not going to make it tonight.”

“I don’t think they’re going to make it tonight.” Billy sighed, looking at the boys in their arms. “We have to keep going.”

“You can get at least one of them home,” Collin argued quietly, pausing to push his shoulder back and crack his back with a grunt and a loud snapping sound, sighing through his nose at the respite from pain and continuing his walk. “Damian has a fever and I’m pretty sure a concussion. Jon is covered in Kryptonite. You know what that stuff does to Superman. We don’t even know if they’re any under the skin.”

Billy chewed at his lip before he answered, knowing that if he said the wrong thing, he’d send Collin into another panic attack. He barely got through the last one. “We got most of it off.” He told his friend quietly, standing closer to him and bumping shoulders. “If there are any in his skin, they’re tiny slivers and Batman will take them out quickly when we get back.”

Collin’s shoulders relaxed slightly, the panic subsiding. “Yeah, ok, yeah. Right, Batman, we’ve got to get them home.” He eyed Billy again, begging with his eyes. “You could still fly at least one of them, if not both of them.”

Sighing, Billy nodded. “I can take them both.” He admitted, glaring at the ground. “But then I’d leave you-”

“I’ll be fine.” Collin said quickly, too quickly, and Billy paused his steady tread to look at him. “I just won’t change back until you come by and get me. I’ll be fine. I can handle myself, well, Abuse can. If you take them, they’ll get there tonight and then you can take care of them and they’ll be fine and you can get me later.” He was rambling now, his voice getting higher pitched despite being deep and rumbling, but he was frantic now and he needed Billy to listen. “I’ll be fine. If you take them, they’ll get help and so will you. I’m not even that bad.” He insisted, turning to face Billy who and paused and looked incredulously at his muscled friend.

Once Collin had finished his rant, Billy blinked once, mind made up. “No.” He said simply, turning and continued walking.

“Why not?” Collin exclaimed, jogging painfully to catch up with his friend, trying not to jostle Damian in his arms. “I swear, I’ll be fine.”

“Collin, you know you won’t cope with being left alone.”

“Fine! I’ll change back and you can carry me too.”

“You’ll be in too much pain to hold on. You remember what happened last time.”

Collin did, and he shivered as he recalled it. He’d been bed ridden for weeks and in constant unbearable pain. “Fine. Why don’t we call someone then? Have them pick us up?”

Billy shook his head. “Damian’s phone was shattered and Jon left his back at the farm. You don’t have one and I left mine at JL headquarters because I knew Damian would bring his. We don’t have any money for a payphone and anyway, who would we call?”

When there wasn’t any reply from his friend, Billy looked over to Colin staring heartbroken at Robin’s crumpled form held softly but securely in his much larger arms, eyes glued to the motionless form of his best friend with the fear and hopelessness that could only look like bravery and determination on Abuse and his vast frame, full of bulging veins and throbbing muscles, a dirty brown trench coat covering his body, brass plated knuckle dusters with his name on them. Often, Billy couldn’t help but compare silently in awe at the vast difference between Abuse and Colin Wilkes. One was big, menacing and strong with a voice as deep as the thrum of an airship powering up, all jagged scars and too-big teeth when he grinned. The other was tiny and timid, under-developed and sickly, feared most everything and with a voice so high pitched it was like a dog whistle when he was frantic or frightened, all knobbly knees and who was most commonly found clutching onto his teddy bear for dear life.

“Alright,” Collin sighed after a moment of thinking, pulling Billy out of his thoughts. “We’ll walk then.” Damian shivered in his arms and borrowed closer into his trench coat, on hand gripping it painfully tight like a life line. In Billy’s, Jon moaned and threw his head back, eyes rolled up into his head so the whites shone like bonfires in the night. “Scratch that. We’ll run.”

As one, the Abuse and Shazam took off together, side by side down the run down streets of Gotham city to the brightly lit beacon of Wayne Manor, where they knew Alfred and Bruce and some other family members no doubt would be home resting from patrol and would be ready and determined to help their friends.

20 minutes later, the doors to Wayne Manor burst open in a frenzy of reds and browns and yellows and blues, the wood creaking and smashing against the walls and two very large men holding onto two smaller bundles of blood and cloth.

“Help them!” Abuse shouted, catching the attention of the rest of the house who scrambled quickly from where ever they were to land by the feet of the giant, panting, bleeding man with agony lacing his eyes, mixed in with fear. “Someone please, help Damian and Jon!”

Moments later, Bruce ran up, placing his hand against his son’s throat while Alfred did the same to Jon. Bruce held his arms out to Abuse, silently asking him to relinquish possession of his son, but Colin shook his head and held him tighter. Bruce sighed. “The Batcave, come quickly.” His eyes darted up the staircase to Dick holding tightly to the banister railing as if he were stopping himself from leaping over and going to his brother. Their eyes met. “Call Clark.” Bruce said and his eldest son was gone before the words had completely left his mouth, needing a task to keep himself from panicking.

What seemed like hours later, Superman -still in civvies-  flew down the railing of the Batcave, eyes full of worry as he floated to his son’s side. He threaded his fingers through Jon’s hair, muttering quiet words of love and reassurances in his ear when he caught sight of the men sat at the table.

Colin was resting his head on Billy’s shoulder, his hat lying on the table, his hair over his eyes. His face was covered in fist sized bruises, cuts and scrapes and the soft grunting on every inhale told Clark that he was probably just as hurt-is not more- than the boys on the medical costs. Billy’s head was pillowed on his hand, eyes fluttering open and closed, the rattling to his breath and the mostly clotted over gash on his arm, the flecks of oil.

Clark knew firsthand what would happen when they turned back and knew why they were stalling, but with one glance with x-ray vision, Clark knew he needed to do something. Placing a kiss to Jon’s head, he stood up and strolled over to the exhausted boys.

“You should turn back and sleep.” Clark’s tone brokered no room for argument but as their head’s snapped up and their eyes widened to the same size as their mouths, he knew he was going to get one anyway.

“We can’t-” Billy objected.

“No no, we shouldn’t-” Colin shook his head.

“You know what will happen-”

“We’ve made that mistake before-”

“We’re better off waiting for them to wake up and then going home because-”

“We know better now because-”

In a great crescendo, they finished together as if reading each other’s minds. Or having had this same conversation with other adults. “It hurts too much otherwise.”

Knowing he was going to get nowhere with arguing, Superman sat down on one of the chairs at the table, removed his glasses and placing them on the tabletop. “Alright.” Clark said evenly, gently, understanding. “If you don’t want to leave, why don’t you tell me what happened?”

Slowly, tentatively, the boys sat up, grunting from the pain already setting into their bones and their joins. “We were ambushed.” Billy admitted, looking side eyed at Colin, who was hiding behind his hair and staring at the table as though he wanted it to open up and swallow him whole. “We didn’t see it and we walked right into a trap.”

“You didn’t sense it?” Clark asked, “Or Jon?”

“I hadn’t changed yet and Jon was arguing with Damian.” Billy explained, sighing as recollection hit. “I think it was about fighting tactics. Jon was making fun of Damian for having to build his tech when he had his biologically built in, like lasers.” Billy grimaced at the look on Clarks face and for ratting his friend out to his dad, but it needed to be done. “It was Colin who, uh, noticed.”

Surprised, Clark snapped his vision to Colin, who flinched from his gaze and slunk further into his massive form. “How’d you do that Colin?” he asked. “I didn’t think Abuse had any powers like that.”

A shake of an orange haired head was the only response Clark got from the boy and Billy put a hand on his friends back.

“Bane was there.” Billy continued “And a few lower-class criminals. It wasn’t too much to handle, but they had fire and oil-” he held up his arm, showing off the dark patches of oil sinking deep into the red of his uniform. “Colin pushed me out of the way and broke the flaming thing before it could get me. Jon jumped in front of Damian who was fending off a few guys and didn’t see the thing from behind. The canister was full of Kryptonite-”

“What colour was it?” Clark asked, dread filling into his heart and spreading through his body like the blood in his veins. “The Kryptonite.”

Billy blinked, exhaustion bringing a thick fog of confusion over his mind but Colin looked up tentatively for the first time since Clark spoke. “Green.” He explained “It was just green. I checked. I would have made Billy get here faster if it was any other colour.”

Clark nodded, relief falling into space between his veins thicker and stronger than the dread. “What happened next?”

Taking that as his cue to keep going, Billy recounted the story again. “Jon went out like a light and I carried him away and hid him. Damian was hit hard in the head and went down next so I took him to where I’d put Jon and went back to help Colin.”

That explains how our boys got hurt, not how they did, Clark thought glaring at the men in front of him. No, not men, these were just children, 10 year olds with too much responsibility and power and torment in their young lives that even aged up and turned into super powered fighting machines Clark was calling them men. Even though their voices were deeper and they were taller, stronger, more capable- Colin was still the paranoid little orphan with a teddy bear clutched permanently in his fist and Billy was still the bold boy who wore a fearful sneer on his lips in the face of danger. And here they were, hiding their injuries from a man who could obviously see they were lying, all to make sure their friends got the help they deserved. Like men.

“Right.” Clark leant forward in his chair, forearms braced on the tabletop. “Thank you for looking after Damian and Jon. What about your injuries? How did you get them?”

Colin flinched, instantly sucking in a gasp of pain. Billy chewed on his bottom lip. He eyed Collin again, who looked about two sentences away from hiding his face in his hands. Billy sighed, squeezing Abuse’s hand. “Colin was ahead of us, said he heard something.” He reluctantly explained, felt Colin stiffen from beside him. “I said he was the first to notice? A thug jumped out from behind a wall and shoved a broken glass bottle into his side. He changed to Abuse instantly, but it was already mostly in there. He was the one who fought Bane while I got the others out, that’s why he’s covered in bruises. And the cuts and blood are from a few guys who got lucky hits on with knives.”

Resiting the urge to grap Collin and hold him, Clark stayed very still and nodded. “And you?” He asked Billy, meeting the youngers eyes.

“I lost sight of Damian at one point and someone came at me with a machete.” He clarified. “I didn’t see it and if it wasn’t for Jon pushing me out of the way it would have killed me. Bane punched me in the side before I could make it to Jon so I could take out the bigger pieces of Kryptonite and then Colin took over.”

“Did you subdue Bane?” Clark asked Colin, confused at another head shake.

“I shoved him over the pier and watched him swim away.” He mumbled, “I had more important things to worry about, like making sure all the Kryptonite was out of Jon and Damian didn’t die in my arms.”

Clark sighed. “You guys did a good job. Why don’t you change back, sleep here and we can fix you up while you’re asleep and then you can be here when the boys wake up?” He suggested, silently begging them with his eyes to agree.

They seemed to have a silent conversation, all expressions and gestures but Clark waited patiently. Suddenly, they paused, seemingly making up their mind and Superman bit his lip in anticipation. “Fine.” Billy submitted, holding tighter to his friend’s hand. “Try and hold it in.” He suggested to Colin who rolled his eyes weakly in response.

With a sound of bones stretching and reshaping, the cracking of muscles being put back into place, the pained pants and grunts and groans from Colin rapidly becoming a small boy and Billy raising his head up and calling "Shazam!" with a lightning bolt magically appearing from nowhere and hitting him , illumating his form in a blast of light until he shrunked down to normal sized before Superman’s very eyes, Colin and Billy’s bodies rearranged themselves to their normal sizes and shapes, the bruises and blood and pain magnified now on their smaller forms. Their eyes rolled back into their heads and they laid there, twitching in pain.

Clark carried them to the cots, placed them on separate beds and covered them in a blanket. Wiping the blood off their faces, he retold their story to Bruce and returned to his son’s bedside.

When they woke up, their ears were filled with joyful laughter and exasperated sighs, their bodies shaking from overexertion and agony, their eyes not wanting to open. Billy woke before Colin, his body bandaged and a glass of water with some tablets on the bedside which he promptly took. When Cullen stirred beside him, they both made their way past the flimsy paper curtain and stumbled to their friends, still covered in bruises and freshly wrapped bandages. They looked up as the curtain parted and was Damian smiling?

“I’m so glad you’re ok!” Jon cried as he leapt off the bed and ran to hug each of his friends, forgetting that super strength and body aching agony didn’t mix. “Dad told us what happened. We thought you weren’t gonna wake up for a while.”

Billy smiled at him. “I’m just glad you’re ok. We got most of the Kryptonite out, we just had to carry you both home.” He turned to Damian who hadn’t moved from his position on his bed. “How did they even get a hold of Kryptonite?”

“Father is looking into that as we speak.” He waved his hand absentmindedly before his eyes fixated on Colin, leaning heavily against the cold stone wall. “Is it true? Did you really take on Bane alone and win?”

Feeling the blush already spreading across his face and neck, Colin looked at the clipboard by Damian’s bedside instead of at his friend. “Yeah,” he mumbled, eyes scanning the paper without reading the words. “It’s not important. I wasn’t going to let him hurt you, so I got rid of him. Billy was needed more than me, so I kept Bane busy while he got you out.”

Damian had reached across now to grab at his friend’s arm, pull him closer and away from the wall. He turned his head and signalled for Alfred to hurry over, bending down to listen to what Damian had to whisper in his ear before nodding with a smile on his face and darting off almost as suddenly and as silently as he had come. “There’s something you’re not telling us, Wilkes.” While the name was usually said sharply, condescendingly to command and organise, this time it was said with love and patience and gratitude and everything Colin never thought himself capable of having. “What happened? What is weighing on you so heavily that you cannot even meet my eyes?”

That did it. Colin yanked his arm from Damian’s firm grip and fell to the ground at the foot of his bed with his head in his hands, sobbing deeply. “I’m sorry!” He bawled, yanking at his hair with his fingers as his palm pressed hard into his eye sockets. “I’m so sorry! It’s all my fault!”

Jon, Damian and Billy each exchanged confused looks until Jon (who was the only one able to function with painless movement) crouched down next to Colin, rubbing his back with one hand and raising his chin up with the other. “What are you talking about Colin?” He asked, rubbing soothing circles on his friends back. He was thin, Jon could feel the uneven bumps of his spine and ribs through his skin, trembling with pain and the exhaustion of long consecutive nights as Abuse. He wondered if the women at the orphanage was feeding him. “You’ve done nothing wrong. We don’t blame you for anything.”

“B-but-”, Collin was blabbering, the words he wanted to say slipping too fast and not fully formed out of his tear and snot and spit soaked lips as he tried to breathe through the pain in his bones and the pain in his lungs and the pain in his heart. “I was in the f-front, I-I should have seen it before any-anyone else could get hurt and if-if I was paying just a little m-more a-attention then we wouldn’t be in this mess a-and you wouldn’t have gotten h-hurt.”

Arms tightening around his shaking friend, Jon shushed him with calming and loving words until Colin’s tears tapered off into dry sobs and tremors. He wiped the tears from his face. “I’m really really sorry.” He whispered, eyes low to the ground.

Suddenly, another pair off arms were wrapped around him, helping to lift him and pull him onto Damian’s cot where he dragged his friend to lay beside him. Jon pulled his over so it was flush next to Damian’s and dragged Billy to join him as well. “You have nothing to be sorry for.” Damian insisted, voice soft and caring, although that just might be the mild concussion. “We should have been paying closer attention. Do not worry Colin, just sleep tonight and tomorrow we can focus on getting better.”

“You know I can’t sleep,” he yawned, eyes wide open. “That’s why I wanted to go home. I didn’t bring Rory, I left him in my room.”

Damian hummed, a smile playing on his lips. “Did you?” He asked smugly, knowing the answer. “Because I was so sure that you brought him over that I sent Pennyworth to fetch him for you.”

As if on cue, a finely tailored black suited arm shoved its way through a gap in the paper curtain and Colin gasped, frantically reaching for the old and worn teddy bear in its grasp. “Thank you, Alfred!” He breathed, clutching Rory tightly to his chest as though it were protecting his heart like a layer of cartilage. “Thank you so much!”

A soft, receding chuckle told the boys that they were alone once again, and as Colin settled down between the folds of thin blankets and friendship, finally calm for the first time that night, they realised no amount of debating and arguing could bring them closer together than nearly dying together every night and fighting side-by-side in a family unit tied by stands of friendship, stronger than detest and competition and annoyance.

Now, their only problem was stopping Colin from looking up at the ceiling tomorrow and seeing a roof filled with dark bats, a fact he had forgotten as he barged down in a panic before, and Damian pre-emptively covered his snoring friends head with one of the blankets to prolong the inevitable.

Billy threaded his fingers through Colin’s again and squeezed.

 Please take time to cast your vote in the Canadian Federal Election today if you haven't already. Our democracy depends on its citizens voting. If you wake up tomorrow and your side lost then I sincerely hope that we as a country can continue living our daily lives with respect and compassion. Things will change. Better for some and not for others. Let's all try to remember what it is to be Canadian eh.

 Is This How You See Me? - Jaime Hernandez (writer & artist). It's been years since I've looked in on Maggie and Hopey so this new graphic novel chronicling their adventures at a punk music reunion in Huerta was a perfect way for me to catch up on their lives. The girls have always had a complicated relationship and things haven't changed too much now that Esperanza/Hopey is married to another woman with a son and Maggie is in a long term relationship with a man. I loved the flashbacks to their younger days and unlike Dan De Carlo's Betty and Veronica, these women have aged and Jaime shows that beautifully. Love & Rockets fans must buy this graphic novel.

 Archie #708 - Nick Spencer & Mariko Tamaki (writers) Sandy Jarrell (artist) Matt Herms (colours) Jack Morelli (letters). Lots of mysterious things going on in this issue as Archie and Sabrina's picnic in the woods is interrupted while Jughead and Reggie's investigation into Reggie's father's disappearance receives a major clue. These modern Archie comics are so much more interesting than the old school stuff.

 Guardians of the Galaxy #10 - Donny Cates (writer) Cory Smith (pencils) Victor Olazaba (inks) David Curiel (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). The reunion with an ex-Guardian doesn't go well but not to worry folks, Groot and his pals come to the rescue. I like the new Magus reborn. Oh, and the cover is a total fib.

 Absolute Carnage #4 - Donny Cates (writer) Ryan Stegman (pencils) JP Mayer, Jay Leisten & Ryan Stegman (inks) Frank Martin (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). All seems lost when Carnage absorbs the Venom symbiote from a defeated Hulk but hold your horses folks, Eddie Brock will save the day. It's a major change for this character so you won't want to miss it.

 Metal Men #1 - Dan Didio (writer) Shane Davis (pencils) Michelle Delecki (inks) Jason Wright (colours) Travis Lanham (letters). Unlike the recently released Inferior Five we actually have the Metal Men in this debut issue. I'm glad I gave Dan Didio a chance because he impressed me with this story. The discovery of a sentient Nth metal might be similar to Marvel's Venom symbiote but I'm hoping the rest of this 12-issue maxi doesn't devolve into Will Magnus's Metal Men fighting this new entity.

 Superman Year One #3 - Frank Miller (writer) John Romita Jr. (pencils) Danny Miki (inks) Alex Sinclair (colours) John Workman (letters). Great Caesar's ghost that was a slog. I actually fell asleep partway through this. This 3-issue mini did not deserve the prestige DC Back Label imprint treatment. The writing was hackneyed and the art was unspectacular. I got tired of the clipped, repetitive captions after only a few pages because they ran on and on. And even though this is some of John Romita Jr.'s best work there was nothing special about it. These stories of Superman's early adventures could've been done in a 6-issue $3.99 US monthly and fans would have been happy. The big blue boy scout is not a good fit for Frank Miller. The style of writing he used in this last issue is more suited to someone like Green Arrow or the Question. If he follows through with another Superman story like he teased on the last page I would think twice before spending the time to read it.

 X-Men #1 - Jonathan Hickman (writer) Leinil Francis Yu (pencils) Gerry Alanguilan (inks) Sunny Gho (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). This is the first new X-Team book to hit the racks following the twelve issues of House and Powers of X that laid the foundation for Marvel's mutant revamp. It introduces the good guys (the mutants) and the bad guys (human scientists hell bent on eradicating mutants). The team rescues young mutants from the bad guys and safely return to Krakoa leaving behind a lot of dead humans. Yes, no more mister nice mutant. The team consists of Cyclops, Storm, Polaris, Magneto, Dr. Reyes, Jean Grey, Havok, Vulcan, Wolverine, Cable and Prestige (I know her as Rachel Summers). Only Scott, Ororo, Erik and Lorna go on the mission so no crazy Canucklehead antics this issue, sigh. I liked this enough to want to keep reading but not enough to add it to my "must read" list.

 Killswitch #1 - Jeffrey & Susan Bridges (writers) Walter Geovani (art) Brittany Peer (colours) Simon Bowland (letters). This sci-fi comic book is about a future where a small minority of people can see the future. They're called Augers. The rest of humanity fears them and have them rounded up in detention centres. Sounds familiar. The main character is Major Marcella Regula who turned in her own brother as an Auger. She's the new head of security at a detention centre in a domed city built on a comet. She hits the killswitch to try and save an Auger from dying but fails. Then she helps the dead man's friends to escape. I picked this up because I really liked the art but the story didn't spark joy. I'm hitting the killswitch on this one.

 The Marked #1 - David Hine (writer) Brian Haberlin (art) Geirrod Van Dyke (colours) Francis Takenaga (letters). This new book is full of magic and the art is stupendous. An ancient order of tattooed magic users tasked with fighting the forces of chaos have found a new recruit. So has a malevolent government agency after one of the Marked is banished. I cared about Saskia and her new friends by the end of this issue so I want to find out what happens to them. I'm going to read this as long as I can.

 The Batman's Grave #1 - Warren Ellis (writer) Bryan Hitch (pencils) Kevin Nowlan (inks) Alex Sinclair (colours) Richard Starkings (letters). The opening pages did not surprise me because I know someone who has their tombstone already in place. Batman investigates when a dead body is found in a tenement building. The victim had a wall full of Batman clippings and this 12-issue maxi is off and running. I love the detective side of Batman so I'm adding this to my "must read" list.

 Spider-Man #2 - J. J. Abrams & Henry Abrams (writers) Sara Pichelli (art) Elisabetta D'Amico (inking assistant) Dave Stewart (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Two issues in and Ben has met his MJ. Her name is Faye Ito and she's a pip. So much for the old secret identity. Also cue the super villain menace appearance. You won't hear me complaining that there are too many Spider-Man books on the racks as long as they're this good.

 Inferior 5 #2 - Jeff Lemire (writer) Keith Giffen (plot & pencils) Michelle Delecki (inks) Hi-Fi (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). That's enough for me. This is just too weird. If you're into weirdness, you will certainly like this.

 Something is Killing the Children #2 - James Tynion IV (writer) Werther Dell'Edera (art) Miquel Muerto (colours) AndWorld Design (letters). I like Erica Slaughter, monster hunter. She gives this horror story a lot of spunk.

 Contagion #3 - Ed Brisson (writer) Mack Chater & Stephen Segovia (art) Veronica Gandini & Andrew Crossley (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). I'll give Ed Brisson this, he sure knows how to string a Marvel maniac along. Jessica Jones was the one to entice me to read this issue and the heroes that show up to help fight the fungus next issue makes me want to read that too. And that's not to mention the Wrecking Crew either.

 Once & Future #3 - Kieron Gillen (writer) Dan Mora (art) Tamra Bonvillain (colours) Ed Dukeshire (letters). Evil King Arthur gets his Galahad while Duncan and his granny get help from a historian. I like granny's simple solution for keeping the bad guys from winning.

 Batman #81 - Tom King (writer) John Romita Jr. & Mitch Gerads (pencils) Klaus Janson & Mitch Gerads (inks) Tomeu Morey & Mitch Gerads (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). We're getting there folks. Bear with us. That Thomas Wayne is one tough Batman. He takes on Batwoman, Batgirl, Orphan, Huntress, Red Robin, Robin and Signal and manages to survive. Damn that no killing rule. Meanwhile, Batman and Catwoman get into Arkham Asylum to get to Bane. I liked how all the stuff leading up to this issue is explained even though it was hard to follow.

Rise of the Blue Comet - Chapter 1

In the middle of the Bermuda Triangle lies a country hidden from the world by powerful enchantments, territorial magical creatures, and an overwhelming fear of the unknown by other humans. The country is called Brooklina, and it is my home. I was born and raised there, and because of that, I know exactly where to go to escape a dozen armed guards.

I rode on top of a she-wolf with a dark brown coat, both my legs hanging on the left side of her body. We were moving so fast that the lush trees of the Enchanted Forest were green blurs. A cloud of dust trailed behind us like it would with a galloping horse. Still, it wasn’t fast enough to lose the party chasing us.

“Take a sharp right,” I whispered into the wolf’s ear.

The wolf either didn’t hear me or ignored me because she continued running on the well worn path. I rolled my eyes, kicking her lightly on the side. She growled, glaring at me with her intelligent brown eyes. The wolf whacked me with her fluffy tail.

Whoosh!

I ducked just as an arrow passed over my head, lodging into the trunk of a nearby tree. A strand of dark brown hair hung from the point that looked suspiciously like my own. I looked behing and saw an archer knock another arrow from atop his horse. I knew he wouldn’t miss a second time.

“Chit-chit!” I chattered.

Right before the bowman was about to release the arrow, a scurry of squirrels jumped on his face. He yelled out in pain as their claws scratch him, causing him to drop the bow. I smiled at the squirrels before looking forward again, taking a deep breath. I knew that would only buy us a few moments of time.

I reached down to my scabbard on my waist and unsheathed my sword, Brinebitter, that I had created. Its blade was made of aquamarine colored sea glass enchanted to never break. I gripped onto the coral hilt and looked behind. After a few seconds of confusion, we were being chased by the Royal Guard again. Only eleven of them remained, but that was still an overwhelming amount.

“You aren’t going to escape!” Captain Ryder yelled.

The wolf moved closer to the tree line, giving me an idea. I slashed Brinebitter at the trunk and looked back at the eleven galloping horses.

“Stop!” I whinnied.

The horses stopped abruptly at the fallen tree, sending a couple of guardsmen to the ground. Just to be fair, I threw down a couple of apple slices before sheathing Brinebitter and facing forward.

“Now will you listen to me?” I asked the wolf.

She perked her ears. I took that as a yes.

“Go left.”

The wolf turned left, jumping over a fallen tree and deeper into the Enchanted Forest. The farther we strayed from the path, the more uneven the terrain became and the lower the tree branches hung. If the guards wanted to keep their trail on us, they would have to continue their pursuit on foot. We were safe for the time being.

It was a good thing too because the wolf crashed a few minutes later, panting. A flash of red light erupted from her body, blinding me.

Where the wolf was now lay a teenage girl in a red dress. Freckles were sprinkled across the bridge of her nose, a smudge of dirt on her cheek. She would have been able to pass as a normal human if it weren’t for the fluffy dark brown tail and wolf ears. Yup. It was my sister without a doubt.

“A little warning would have been nice.” I grumbled, moving off of her stomach and leaning against a moss covered tree.

She casually opened a dark brown eye.

“You should have expected it,” she responded, beads of sweat rolling down her forehead. “I’m exhausted, and you know what happens when I’m exhausted. I go feral.”

I sighed. She closed her eyes again.

“And I didn’t appreciate that kick.”

“Well Ruby, why did you ask me for directions if you’re not going to listen to me?”

She shrugged. “Whatever. Got a ribbon?”

I pulled a white ribbon off my wrist and tossed it to her. The fabric fluttered to the ground and landed on Ruby’s leather boots.

“Aqua… too exhausted to move, remember?” She asked without opening her eyes.

I sighed and grabbed the ribbon, moving to her front. Carefully, I lifted up her head and started to pull back her knotted dark brown hair.

While I was on the ground, I looked around at where we had landed.

We were in the middle of a small clearing with dense forests surrounding us on all sides. Towards the eastern side of the area was a stone well covered in moss. The whole place looked like it hadn’t been touched in years, decades even. Unless the guards knew to look here, we would be impossible to find.

“You did good Rubes,” I said. “Not just with finding this place; you fought like a true warrior earlier. Aunt Diana would be proud.”

Ruby smirked. “Yeah, I did do good, didn’t I?”

“Forget I said anything. Your ego is big enough.”

Ruby chuckled. I tied the ribbon together and stood up, dusting off my teal dress and walked to the well. The wooden pulley was worn and weathered after spending time in the rain and sun for so long. I peered over the edge, not able to see the bottom. I bent down and grabbed a pebble and promptly dropped it. Ten seconds passed, then twenty. No sound gave an indication that the rock had hit the water, or anything else.

I shuddered, remembering stories Chad had told me about bottomless pits that would keep annoying sisters in its clutches until they died. Mother had assured me that no such things existed and I didn’t need to worry, but now I was starting to wonder if she was wrong.

“I’m going to go get some water,” I said. “Just stay here and don’t go in the well.”

“Aww, I was wanting to drag my exhausted body to that well and crack every single bone and my body.” Ruby sighed dramatically, opening her eyes just to roll them. “Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to lie here in agony.”

“Have fun.”

I could feel her glare as I walked deeper into the wood. Times like these make me wonder if the midwife had mixed us up and I was born thirty minutes before Ruby instead of the other way around. Alas, my birthmark on my left wrist was a strong giveaway that we weren’t switched. I traced it as I walked, outlining the blue teardrop shape with my fingernail.

I tried not to think about what that mark would mean for my family and my future, or the responsibility it would bring. There was too much going on in the present.

Just like Aunt Diana had taught, I tried my best to use my senses to my advantage. I took a deep breath through my nose. Smells of dried pine needles, blooming woodland roses, and sun warmed grasses filled my head; but it was the faint scent of caramel that caught my attention, the unmistakable scent of a River Randiria.

Grinning, I started to run towards the smell. In order to survive, a River Randiria needed to grow by a constant supply of freshwater whether that be a river, lake, or spring. Without that supply, it would dry out and die faster than other trees. Master Wollander had said in one of my lessons that it had something to do with the hollow trunk and how the bark distributed the water, but I didn’t care at the moment.

I felt the ground go from hard dirt to softer soil on my bare feet. I could hear the rushing water of the river before I could see the white rapids. The banks were more out in the open than I would have liked, but I didn’t have time to look for another spot. I uncapped my water jug and started filling it up, my teal eyes darting from side to side, waiting for an ambush.

A twig snapped behind me and I spun around, face to face with a very startled flower pixie. She said a few insults that would have gotten my mouth washed out with soap before flying with the twig. I blinked as she whacked me with it.

A howl cut through the woods like a knife. I turned toward the direction I came from. I recognized that howl.

I started to run.

A/N: I know there is a character named Ruby in the show Once Upon a Time, but my Ruby and that Ruby aren’t related. I tried about ten different names for her, but I liked Ruby best. Sorry if that confuses you.
